3.  NCBI stands for “National Center for
Biotechnology Information”
 It is part of the United States National Library of
Medicine (NLM), a branch of the National Institutes
of Health (NIH).
 It is approved and funded by the government of
the United States.
 The NCBI is located in Bethesda, Maryland and
was founded in 1988 through legislation sponsored
by US Congressman Claude Pepper.
 The NCBI houses a series of databases relevant
to biotechnology and biomedicine and is an
important resource for bioinformatics tools and
services.
 Major databases include GenBank for DNA
sequences and PubMed, a bibliographic database for
biomedical literature. Other databases include
the NCBI Epigenomics database. All these databases
are available online through the Entrez search
engine.

10. Nucleotide database-
The Nucleotide sequence database is a collection of sequences from GenBank, RefSeq,
and Third Party Annotation (TPA). Genome, gene and transcript sequence data provide
the foundation for biomedical research and discovery.
Protein sequence database-
The Protein sequence database is a collection of data from several sources, including
translations from annotated coding regions in GenBank, RefSeq and TPA, as well as
records from SwissProt, PIR, PRF, and PDB.
Structural databases-
Structural databases are essential tools for all crystallographic work and often need to be
consulted at several stages of the process of producing, solving, refining and publishing
the structure of a new material.
OMIM - Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man-
OMIM is a comprehensive, authoritative compendium of human genes and genetic
phenotypes that is freely available and updated daily. OMIM is authored and edited at the
McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of
Medicine, under the direction of Dr. Ada Hamosh. Its official home is omim.org.
