2. The state of Odisha has a geographical area of 1,55,707 sq. Km.
The recorded forest area is 58,136 sq.km. as per the State of
Forest Report (SFR-2015) of Forest Survey of India.
A total of 27 species of amphibians, 131 species of reptiles
including 3 crocodilian species, 524 species of birds and 27 species
of mammals have so far been recorded in the state which include 54
species of threatened animals (17 species of reptiles,15 species of
birds and 22 species mammals) as per the definition of IUCN Red
data book.

The important wildlife found in state are Elephants, Tigers, Leopards,
Hyena, Jungle cats, Sambar, Spotted deer, wild Boar, Giant squirrels, Pea
fowl, Hill myna, Marsh Crocodile, Gharial, Salt water Crocodile, King
Cobra, Sea Turtles and Monitor Lizard etc.
4. The state has 19 Wildlife Sanctuaries, one National Park
(Bhitarkanika), two Conservation Reserve (Similipal-Hadagarh-
Kuldiha and Brutang Conservation Reserve), two Tiger Reserves
(Similipal and Satkosia), three Elephant Reserves (Mayurbhanj,
Mahanadi and Sambalpur), one Biosphere Reserve (Similipal)
for addressing In-Situ conservation of wildlife.
The State has 10 Zoos, out of which one Large Zoo
(Nandankanan), three Small Zoos and six Mini Zoos have been
established to take care of Ex-Situ conservation of animals.

6. Bhitarakanika was designated as a National Park on 16 September 1998
and is recognized by UNESCO as well.
Meaning of Bhitarkanika: ‘Bhitara’ means interior and ‘Kanika’ means
beautiful – giving birth to the word Bhitarkanika that stands for the beauty
and variance of the ecosystem.
As the Bhitarakanika National Park is known for its saltwater crocodile, it
also provides shelter to much other important wildlife like the Indian python,
king cobra, Indian black ibis, snake-birds/darters, wild boar/wild swine,
rhesus monkey, chital/spotted-deer, monitor lizard and many more.

7. Nandankanan, literally meaning the Garden of Heaven,
is located near Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
Unlike other zoos in the country, Nandankanan is built
right inside the forest and set in a completely natural
environment.
Nandankanan is among the six participating zoos for the
conservation breeding of White-backed vulture.
