The VeriChip is a passive RFID microchip developed by VeriChip Corporation that was inspired by the actions of firefighters on 9/11. The rice-sized microchip, cleared by the FDA in 2004, is implanted in the arm via a needle and can provide emergency responders access to a person's medical records through a 16-digit ID number. While the VeriChip has potential uses like contactless payments and access control, some have religious or health concerns about microchip implantation in humans.
