Critical theories of race and racism have been used by sociologists to not only describe modern
societies, but also address issues of social injustice and achieve an end to racial oppression. Critical
race theory is one of the most widely used for this purpose. Its utility rests upon the assumption that
race is a social construct and not an inherent biological feature. In place of the concept of inherent
race, critical race theory proffers the concept of racialization. The tenet that the concept of race is
created and attached to particular groups of people through social processes. In tandem with this,
critical race theory contends that identity is neither fixed nor unidimensional. It also places importance
on the perspectives and experiences of racial minorities (Ritzer and Stepnisky, 2013:66).
Critical race theory also provides the framework for the racial formation theory as proposed by
Michael Omi and Howard Winant. Their theory, in keeping with critical theories on racism, denies
race as being of biological construction but the theory then goes on to refute race as either an
ideological construct or an objective condition, and instead looks to a processual construction of

Beginning in the 1670s children were often used as chimney sweeps in England. After the Great Fire
of London, new building regulations were designed to keep the city safer. Fireplaces were required to
be built a certain way, with narrower chimneys; and it became more important to ensure that the
chimneys were free of obstruction after a liberal amount of usage. Since the chimneys were so
cramped, this task was given to children, the only people petite enough to fit inside the chimneys.
Most of the children who were chimney sweeps were often orphans who were apprenticed to a Master
Sweep who would be their boss and take care of them. Consequently, during this time period, the
terrible abuse of children as chimney sweeps became widespread. William Blake was an author during
this time period who realized how horrible the chimney sweeping industry was. Blake was so
disgusted with the industry that he wrote two poems about it, one in Songs of Innocence and another
in Songs of Experience. In Songs of Experience, William Blake s The Chimney Sweeper uses a
critical tone of society to give a voice to social groups who did not have the ability to use their voices.

symbolizes the innocence of childhood, while the dark child represents the darkness of child labor.

My favorite character from Facing the Giants is David. He enrolled in a new school, having just

In the beginning of the movie, David didn t think he could do the possible and kept doubting himself
about everything he did. His father was the only person that encouraged him to try out for the football
team, and he also told him that even though he is small, it doesn t make him weak. When David got
the kicker position, he still didn t think he was good enough to play with the rest of the boys. He
thought that he wasn t going to make it before he even kicked the ball. When his father noticed this

I figured it was appropriate that the author did not place the blame on one party. Instead, he addressed
the various individuals in Canada that were not providing a fair education in its national and political
history as well as for the reasons why this is such a big deal. This book was educational as it gave
readers brief and sometimes precise examples, like how Canadians lack national and political
conscience within the academic curriculum. The Country s educational system needs to do a better job

ocean does not become dirty. Mahatma Gandhi. In Frankenstein, the creature encounters many
judgmental people that are mean to him at first glance. The story of Frankenstein compared to real life
has many of the same problems. This story relates and will relate to society throughout time because
these problems are not going anywhere any time soon. The story of Frankenstein explores themes of
religion, science and societal values that still present problems in today s world. For starters, religion
has always had a huge input on the way man was created and how they should be created to this day.
In the story Frankenstein the creature is created by Victor in his house. Religion sees that being
unnaturally made is a bad thing and many would agree with that statement. Also, in Greek mythology
there is a hero by the name of Prometheus who is seen by some as good and some as bad but the
