Ham radio can be useful for communication during natural disasters when other forms of communication like cell phones and internet are disrupted. Ham radio uses transmitters and receivers to allow two-way communication between operators around the world. It does not rely on cellular or internet infrastructure. During the recent Nepal earthquake, Indian ham radio operators were able to contact operators in Nepal to coordinate relief efforts when other communication methods were not working due to damage or network overload. Ham radio enthusiasts in Bangalore were also receiving calls to help provide information about stranded people in Nepal. Ham radio has the potential to be a valuable disaster management tool for communication when other networks have failed.

The cultural logic of media convergence

A B S T R A C T ● Responding to the contradictory nature of our current
moment of media change, this article will sketch a theory of media convergence
that allows us to identify major sites of tension and transition shaping the media
environment for the coming decade. Media convergence is more than simply a
technological shift. Convergence alters the relationship between existing
technologies, industries, markets, genres and audiences. ●

The American media environment is now being shaped by two seemingly
contradictory trends: on the one hand, new media technologies have
lowered production and distribution costs, expanded the range of available
delivery channels and enabled consumers to archive, annotate, appropriate
and recirculate media content in powerful new ways;1 on the other hand,
there has been an alarming concentration of the ownership of mainstream
commercial media, with a small handful of multinational media conglom-
erates dominating all sectors of the entertainment industry.
Few media critics seem capable of keeping both sides of this equation in
mind at the same time. Robert McChesney (2000) warns that the range of
voices in policy debates will become constrained as media ownership
concentrates. Cass Sunstein (2002) worries that fragmentation of the web

He notes that the next generation wants control over their media and news when, where and how they want it. The rise of citizen media through blogging may lead to a power shift and change in the media model. Democracy Reporting International (DRI) operates on the conviction that democratic,
participatory governance is a human right and governments should be accountable to
their citizens. DRI supports democratic governance around the world with a focus on
institutions of democracy, such as constitutions, elections, parliaments and rules of
democracy grounded in international law. Through careful assessments based on field
research with partners, DRI convenes diverse stakeholders to promote policies that
strengthen democratic institutions. A non-profit company, DRI is based in Berlin and has
offices in Tunisia, Lebanon, Ukraine, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Myanmar.
Michael Meyer-Resende is a lawyer with twenty years of experience in political
transitions and democratisation. Works in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. His
professional experience includes two years legal practice in Berlin, four years with the
Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) of the OSCE (Warsaw),
three years with the election team of the European Commission in Brussels and
journalistic experience with the BBC. In 2006 he co-founded DRI and serves as Executive
Director since then. He publishes it regularly in newspapers like The New York Times,
The Guardian, Politico, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and think tank publications.

Radiation Therapy in Palliative Care Spring 2012
This document provides an overview of palliative radiation therapy for cancer patients. It discusses the fundamentals of how radiation works and advances that have allowed it to more effectively treat cancer. It then focuses on how palliative radiation can effectively relieve symptoms from bone metastases, lung cancer, bleeding, and other cancers in 1-3 fractions rather than longer courses of treatment. Studies show short fractionation schedules provide pain relief comparable to longer schedules with fewer side effects and greater convenience. Pharmacology of 5-hydroxytryptamine and Antagonist
5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT or Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that serves a range of roles in the human body. It is sometimes referred to as the happy chemical since it promotes overall well-being and happiness.
It is mostly found in the brain, intestines, and blood platelets.
5-HT is utilised to transport messages between nerve cells, is known to be involved in smooth muscle contraction, and adds to overall well-being and pleasure, among other benefits. 5-HT regulates the body's sleep-wake cycles and internal clock by acting as a precursor to melatonin.
It is hypothesised to regulate hunger, emotions, motor, cognitive, and autonomic processes.
