1984 ESSAY: MICROCHIPPING
By Cathy H.
Imagine never getting lost at any location on earth. With today’s rapid advance of technology, comes a potential mass distribution use of the global positioning chip. There are indications that science is moving inexorably closer to the use of microchips in humans, as people in today’s society fear more and more for their safety and wellbeing. Being the size of a grain, the chip would be a convenient and efficient device to be implanted and carried inside the human body. This controversial possibility has sparked a wide variety of debate among citizens. Implanting a microchip, though having great advantages, ultimately would not be realistic and morally acceptable.
Humans deserve to have their right of freedom respected. This would be contradicted if babies were given a microchip immediately after being born, as it would harshly violate their permission, done without consent. It would spark much suppression and fear among people, thus completely infringing their privacy, as a person’s movement, both physically and financially, could be tracked. Intimate personal data about a person could then be easily sold, hacked into, or land into the wrong hands. . Many dangers will arise, as there is no assurance that the information contained will be properly protected. The decision of who would have access to each person’s crucial information is also a major issue that would never reach a conclusion. Major health problems from the radio frequency waves and magnetic field would affect any individual who carry the chip inside themselves. As shown in 1984 by Georg Orwell, the citizens of Oceania are constantly being monitored twenty-four seven by telescreens, with the ability to see their every movement at any location. The citizens are terrified of rebelling and end up foolishly obeying their cruel government. Such power to gain this extent of control over people ultimately results in tyranny and corruption by a ruling force. The chilling society of 1984 suppresses all thought crimes, immediately vaporizing those who are caught acting against the party. The main themes of this book can be applied to today’s modern day society, as the book gives us a glimpse of how our world could end up like with such use of this advanced technology
The realm of communications over the past century has seen immense change. We are provided with new ways to communicate with each other, such as email and instant messaging. Documents placed on the internet are serve as information sources for the rest of the world. Vast databases allow for the easy storage of important information. Global positioning satellites allow one to track their exact location and find easy ways to their desired destinations, taking away stress and painstaking planning. The invention of cell phones have resulted in the death of many teens while they were texting or talking while focusing on driving. With the sudden rise of a wide variety of social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace, impulsive teens are tempted to post private materials that otherwise shouldn’t be revealed to the public. The internet has become a preferred method for people to remain anonymous while verbally harassing and harming others, termed as “cyber bullying.” Competition between human labour and machinery have grown greater over the years. Technology has eliminated the need for physical exertion on the part of humans, and microchips and computers bring with it the potential to eliminate mental drudgery.
The advanced use technology, as with many other controversial subjects, come with it’s positives and negatives. With the shocking possibility of a future use of the human microchip, issues such as privacy and the respect of ethical rights come into the question. At the rate of society’s development, anything seems likely to happen. As long as citizens are able to realize the risks and dangers that come along with each revolutionizing step, they can be sufficiently aware and are more likely to readily prepare themselves, if such technology one day come into their lives.
