SMALL POX
INTRODUCTION
It is a highly Contagious and frequently fatal viral
diseases. The term smallpox was 1st used in
Europe 15th century and it is a acute infection
caused by variola virus and clinically
characterized by a sudden Onset of fever,
headache, vomiting and sime time convulsiin
especially in children.
DEFINITION
• An acute contagious viral disease, with fever and pustules that
usually leave permanent scars. It was effectively eradicated
through vaccination by 1979.
INCIDENCE
• In 1967 WHO began intensified world wide
campaign to eradicate small pox .
• The last known case of small pox in India occured
on 24th May 1975
• India was declared smallpox Free on July 1975.
• The eradication of smallpox was confirmed in
April 1977 by an International commission
• The world Health assembly confirmed the global
EPIDEMOLOGICAL TRIADS
• Agent : Variola Virus
• Host :Human
• Incubation :7 –19 days
PERIOD OF COMMUNICABILITY
Subsequent development of a Maculopapular rash starting
on the face and forearms then spreading to the trunk and legs
and evolving with in 48 hrs to to deep seated from or hard
and Round well –circumscribed vesicles and pustules which
may become umbilcated or confluent.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATION
• High fever
• Headache
• Backache
• Rash /sores/blisters
• Fatigues
• Vomiting
MODE OF TRANSMISSION
•Face-to-face contact.
•Direct contact with saliva and droplets from the
nose or mouth.
•Through air . The virus can cross the placenta but
incidence of congenital Smallpox is relatively low.
Smallpox transmission does not occur through
animals or insects.
CAUSES OF SMALLPOX
ENVIORNMENTAL FACTORS:
• Low temperature
• Low humidity
• Cases may contaminate objects in their
environment including their clothing and
linen with the large droplets or aersols
during sneezing or coughing.
PATHOGENICITY
Inhalation of air droplets
Mucosal replication and viremia
Dissemination to organs and skin
Incubation phase
Secondary viremia
Toxemic phase

PREVENTATION OF SMALLPOX
PRIMARY PREVENTATION:
• Small pox can be prevented by
vaccines also called vaccina virus
vaccines.
• By providing health education
regarding small pox.
NATIONAL HEALTH PROGRAM
SMALL POX ERADICATION PROGRAMME
it also laid the Foundation for stronger nationaI
Immunization programes worldwide And there is
no cases of naturally occurring small pox have
happended worldwide since 1977. the last
natural out break of smallpox In the United
States Occur In 1949
ROLE OF COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSE
• The Role of nurse is to isolate the patient to
prevent transmission of the smallpox
(variola) to non immune person.
• Monitoring and maintaing fluid and
electrolyte balance
• Skin care
•Monitoring for and treatment of
complications

  • 7. MODE OF TRANSMISSION •Face-to-face contact. •Direct contact with saliva and droplets from the nose or mouth. •Through air . The virus can cross the placenta but incidence of congenital Smallpox is relatively low. Smallpox transmission does not occur through animals or insects.
