Science & Religion: Conflict or Conversation?Maya Bohnhoff
Â
Is religion opposed to science? Has science made religion intellectually implausible? Does science rule out the existence of a âpersonalâ God? What does "personal" mean? Does evolution do away with Divine Providence?Havenât recent biological and neurological discoveries made illusions of the concepts of soul or spirit?
These are all questions that I've fielded from correspondents for some time. They're good questions because they call on people who hold to diverse models of the universe to do a reality check.
One of the first PowerPoints that I made when teaching theology. It is crazy. It has animations, links to further slides, and terrible graphics. But it is fun share and does give an accurate view of the history of Christianity. (Although the animations and links don't work in this slideshare.)
This provides an introduction to a new field of theology, called Systemic Theology. Systemic Theology provides a systems perspective of understanding God and the world.

Dr. John Oakes taught a class titled Christianity in a Postmodern World at the 2013 ICEC at San Diego State University. He proposes a rational Christian response to both the good and the bad which comes with postmodern thinking. The class covers the history of modernism and why it was replaced by postmodernism, as well as a brief bio of the major influences in the movement as well as suggesting both the strengths and weaknesses of the postmodern mood.

SuMMARIZING THE OPTIONS
There was a time when it seemed that religion might just dis-
appear. Throughout the modern period secularism continued
to grow. It appeared that the religions of humankind would be
superseded by science and left behind as historical artifacts, like
Egyptian temples, the Greek gods, and many Christian churches
in Northern Europe today. Certainly the hope of a world with-
out religion continues to motivate some thinkers. Richard Daw-
kinsâ âBeyond Belief â movement and advertising campaigns in
Britain and Canada have precisely this outcome as their goal.
And yet at present the outcome they strive for appears unlikely.
If anything, there has been a resurgence of religious commitment
in many cultures. Any decline in religion in Europe and North
America has been more than compensated for by the rapid
growth of Pentecostal and charismatic movements in churches
around the world. Even non-religious thinkers, such as JĂźrgen
Habermas, one of Germanyâs leading philosophers, now speak
of moving â contrary to their and othersâ expectations â into a
âpost-secular society.â1
Religion, then, it appears, is.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as âdistorted thinkingâ.

The Art Pastor's Guide to Sabbath | Steve ThomasonSteve Thomason
Â
What is the purpose of the Sabbath Law in the Torah. It is interesting to compare how the context of the law shifts from Exodus to Deuteronomy. Who gets to rest, and why?
3. âThere is a two fold order
of knowledge, and with
regard to the source, we
know in one by natural
reason, the other by divine
faith.â
Vatican council-I
6. âThe distinctiveness of early
Greek thinkers is that in their
speculation elements of
philosophy, science and religion
mingle in a rich and heady brew. â
Anthony Kenny
7. âThe notion of supreme
being is found in the forms
of the goodâ.
Plato
âThe unmoved moverâ.
Aristotle
8. In short: Greek philosophy originated
and developed in the religious context.
19. âReligion is the
sigh of the
oppressed
creature.
The heart of the
heartless world, it
is the spirit of
a spiritless
situation and it is
the opium of the
people.â
Karl Marx
23. ďwe maintain a world view that the
world is an unfinished existence or it
is something in the process of
development
ďThe masters of modernity believed in
human reasonâs power to combat
ignorance, superstition and tyranny to
build a better world.
25. SECULARISATION OF RELIGION
â Secularizationâ designates a long term process by
which a disappearance of religious ties and
attitudes to transcendence, expectation of an after
life, ritual performances and firmly established
turns of speech is driven onward in both private and
daily public life.â
Blumenberg
26. Radicalization of the reason
⢠Religion should be devoid of its mythic
background and context.
⢠Everything should be subjected to
reason.
27. RELIGION IS MORE
AMBITIOUS THAN
PHILOSOPHY
ď˘Religion
is not a departmental
affair.
ď˘It is not an emotional feeling.
ď˘ It is an expression of the whole
man.
28. THE RESULT OF SEPARATION
POSITIVE RESULTS
ď§ It promoted the
democratic values,
freedom of expression,
equality, human dignity,
feminism etc.
ď§ It could help the church to
become a pure spiritual
entity.
ď§ It paved the way for the
tremendous growth in the
scientific field.
NEGATIVE RESULTS
ď§ Liberal thought of modernity
challenged the moral values of
the people.
ď§ Man lost the feeling of affection,
care, sympathy, love, etc.
ď§ Modernity gave way to the
atheistic thoughts and it resulted
in evils such as materialistic,
hedonistic and atheistic
approach to life and reality.
29. It is needed to recognize each other
Religion and Philosophy are
needed to recognize each other
30. ⢠Philosophy must recognize the central
position of religion
⢠We are in need of a healthy coexistence of philosophy and religion
⢠Philosophy provides a rational foundation
for religion and on the other hand philosophy
gets meaning through religion
31. ⢠Whenever philosophy set out to
separate itself from a religious context,
Itâs scope, vision of its range, its
potency, etc. become drastically
limited.
⢠Philosophy itself will be separated from
the context in which it originated, which
will be a self limitation of philosophy
and it is very unfortunate.
32. âFaith
illumined by
reasonâ, it is
meeting of
creature and
creator.
In the far
reaches of the
human heart
there is a
desire and
nostalgia for
God.
