Sentence stress
 What is sentence stress?
Question
Sentence stress is the music of
spoken English.
Learning to understand
sentence stress will help you to
improve your speaking and
listening skills.
Word stress is when we
emphasize certain sounds in a
word.
Sentence stress is when we
stress certain words in a
sentence.
Most sentences have
2 types of words:
Content words: These are
words that carry the most
important information of a
sentence.
If we take content words out of
a sentence, the reader (or the
listener) will probably have no
idea what the message was
about.
Function words: These are
words that make a sentence
grammatically correct.
If we remove function
words from a sentence a
reader (or listener) may still
get the message.
Content words include:
- Nouns
- Adjectives
- Verbs
- Adverbs
- Negative auxiliaries
Function words include:
- Conjunctions
- Prepositions
- Auxiliary verbs
- Modals
So, how do we emphasize
words?
We say the word:
- longer
- louder
- in a higher pitch

  • 3. Sentence stress is the music of spoken English. Learning to understand sentence stress will help you to improve your speaking and listening skills.
  • 4. Word stress is when we emphasize certain sounds in a word. Sentence stress is when we stress certain words in a sentence.
  • 5. Most sentences have 2 types of words:
  • 6. Content words: These are words that carry the most important information of a sentence.
  • 7. If we take content words out of a sentence, the reader (or the listener) will probably have no idea what the message was about.
  • 8. Function words: These are words that make a sentence grammatically correct.
  • 9. If we remove function words from a sentence a reader (or listener) may still get the message.
  • 10. Content words include: - Nouns - Adjectives - Verbs - Adverbs - Negative auxiliaries
  • 11. Function words include: - Conjunctions - Prepositions - Auxiliary verbs - Modals
