What is an Adverb?
An adverb is a word or phrase that modifies
(gives more information about):
• a verb:
She ran quickly to the bus stop.
• an adjective:
I am terribly busy today.
• another adverb:
He learns very easily.

5 Main Types of Adverbs
Some are single words, and some
are phrases. Adverb phrases are
sometimes called adverbials.

• They answer the question, “how often?
Example: She usually eats lunch here on Saturday.

There are 6 common adverbs of frequency:
always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never
always means 100%
usually/often means about 70-80%
sometimes means about 50%
rarely/seldom means about 10-20%
never means 0%

Adverbs of Frequency: THE PATTERNS
1. They are usually placed between the subject and the verb:
1. Sara always goes out on Saturday evenings.
2. Jane’s boyfriend usually picks her up after class.
3. Ben and Emma often go for lunch together.
4. In the winter Sara sometimes goes Skiing in France.
5. James rarely goes to the movies in the summer because he prefers to
be outside.
6. Marta is so busy she never gets home from work before 7.

2. With the “Be” verb, place the adverb after the verb:
1. I am usually late for class.
2. They are never here on time.

3. With modal and auxiliary verbs, place the adverb between the
modal or auxiliary and the main verb:
You must always try your best.
We can usually find a seat on our train.
I have never visited Turkey.
He is always taking my chocolate.

4. “Sometimes”, “often” and “usually” can start a sentence:
Sometimes, I go for coffee with friends.
Usually, the students can finish their homework.
Often, I will make toast for breakfast.

5. We can place “often” and “sometimes” at the end:
He walks this path often.
I go to the movies sometimes.

day begins. Sometimes, though, thick clouds block the sun,
making everything look dark. Birds often sing in the morning,
waking us with their music. There is rarely ever complete silence,
