Milton Hershey, entrepreneur
Milton Hershey was born in Pennsylvania in 1857. His family moved a lot. He
went to many different schools. He only finished the fourth grade. As a young
man, Hershey started several candy companies. They all failed. Finally, he
founded the Lancaster Caramel Company. It was a major success.
Hershey became interested in chocolate. He built the world’s largest chocolate
factory. His milk chocolate became famous. Hershey wanted his employees to
have comfortable houses and cheap transportation. He built a town around his
factory. The town had schools, parks, and a swimming pool. Hershey died in
1945, but Hershey’s is still the most popular chocolate brand in the United
States. Many tourists visit the town of Hershey every year.

Henry Ford, entrepreneur
Henry Ford was born on a farm in Michigan in 1863. He was the oldest of six
children. As a child, he was interested in how machines work. He built his first
steam engine when he was 15. He continued to build engines. He used bicycle
wheels to build his first car. He started building racing cars. In 1903, he started
Ford Motor Company. He designed the Model T car. It was cheap. Middle-class
Americans could buy it. The Model T became the most popular car in the
United States. Ford wanted to find a way to make the cars faster. He invented
the first moving assembly line. With it, he could make a Model T every eight
seconds. Other American companies started using mass production. Life in the
United States changed forever.
