Pronouns:
What is a pronoun…?
3
Pronouns:
What is a pronoun…?
A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a
noun.
Some examples are:
• I
• You
• He/She/It
• They
• We
4
Demonstrative Pronouns:
Demonstrative pronouns are pronouns that take
the place of a noun SO THAT you don’t have to
repeat the noun.
1. What is this?
2. Who are they?
3. Lori gives us homework.
I hate that!
5
Demonstrative Pronouns:
The 4 most common demonstrative pronouns
are:
• this
• that
• these
• those

7

This:
Refers to a person, place, animal or thing that is
closer in time and distance.
Examples:

This is my dog.
This is my favourite restaurant.
This is the book I was looking for.
8
Demonstrative Pronouns:
That:
Refers to a person, place, animal or thing that is
further away in time and distance.
Examples:

That is the dog that chases bikes
That is the shop that sells used books.
9
Demonstrative Pronouns:
These:
Refers to a number of people, places, animals or things that
are closer in time and distance.
Examples:

10
Demonstrative Pronouns:
Those:
Refers to a number of people, places, animals or things that
are further away in time and distance.
Examples:
Those are the women who have been waiting.
Those belong to my neighbour.
There are so many birds here, but those are my
favourite.
11
Demonstrative Pronouns:
This, that, these, and those are used to instead
of a noun that has already been mentioned or
implied, helping make communication faster and
easier.
Example:
See the red jacket? I want that.
What the speaker means is:
I want the red jacket. “That” takes the
place of “the red jacket.”
12
Demonstrative Pronouns:
To use a demonstrative pronoun, the speaker
must make it clear what they are talking about,
otherwise, demonstrative pronouns are
confusing.
The thing a pronoun represents is called the
antecedent; in the previous example, the
antecedent is the red jacket.
Example:
See the red jacket? I want that.
What the speaker means is:
I want the red jacket.
13
Demonstrative Pronoun vs. Demonstrative Determiners:
Demonstrative pronouns are different from
demonstrative determiners.
The words are the same:
(this, that, those, these), but how we use them is
different.
Have a look:
14
Demonstrative Pronouns vs. Demonstrative Determiners:
Demonstrative pronouns are different from
demonstrative determiners.
Demonstrative determiners directly modify
(describe) a noun and are placed in front of it in
the sentence, like this:
Those cupcakes are mine.
That cookie is also mine.
15
Demonstrative Pronouns – Other Uses
1. To introduce people:
Examples:
This is Irina.
These are my friends, Michael and Jan.
OR This is Michael and this is Jan.
16
Demonstrative Pronouns – Other Uses
2. To begin a conversation on the phone:
Examples:
Hello! This is Jon Smith.
OR
3. To begin a text message to someone who doesn’t
know us.
17
Demonstrative Pronouns – Other Uses
4. Use that to reply to something someone has
said:
Examples:
A: “Do you want to see a movie?
B: “Yes, that’s a good idea.”
A: “I've got a new job.”
B: “That's great.”
A: “I'm very tired.”
B: “Why is that?”
18
Demonstrative Pronouns – Other Uses
Remember:
demonstrative pronouns always identify nouns,
whether those nouns are named specifically or
not.
For example: “I can’t believe this.”
We have no idea what “this” is, but it’s
something the writer cannot believe. It exists,
even though we don’t know what it is.
19
Demonstrative Pronouns - review
1. Use this and these to talk about things near
to us (either in time or distance).
Examples:
This is a nice cup of tea.
Whose shoes are these?
20
Demonstrative Pronouns - review
2. Use that and those to talk about things not near
to us (either in time or distance).
We might point, or gesture towards whatever it is
we are talking about.
Examples:
That is Rachel’s house.
Those are expensive shoes.
That was a great party.
