Recent research in deep learning provides powerful tools that begin to address the daunting problem of automated scene understanding. Modifying deep learning methods, such as CNNs, to classify pixels in a scene with the help of the neighboring pixels has provided very good results in semantic segmentation. This technique provides a good starting point towards understanding a scene. A second challenge is how such algorithms can be deployed on embedded hardware at the performance required for real-world applications. A variety of approaches are being pursued for this, including GPUs, FPGAs, and dedicated hardware. This talk provides insights into deep learning solutions for semantic segmentation, focusing on current state of the art algorithms and implementation choices. Gupta discusses the effect of porting these algorithms to fixed-point representation and the pros and cons of implementing them on FPGAs.

Deep Learning in Robotics - There are two major branches in applying deep learning techniques in robotics. - One is to combine DL with Q learning algorithms. For example, awesome work on playing Atari games done by deep mind is a representative study. While this approach can effectively handle several problems that can hardly be solved via traditional methods, these methods are not appropriate for real manipulators as it often requires an enormous number of training data. - The other branch of work uses a concept of guided policy search. It combines trajectory optimization methods with supervised learning algorithm like CNNs to come up with a robust 'policy' function that can actually be used in real robots, e.g., Baxter of PR2.

Almost every month a new method is published that achieves state-of-the-art result on some common benchmark dataset. In addition to that, DL is being applied to new problems in CV. In the talk we’re going to focus on DL application to image segmentation task. We want to show the practical importance of this task for the fashion industry by presenting our case study with results achieved with various attempts and methods.

Skies are common backgrounds in photos but are often less interesting. Professional photographers correct this by using sophisticated tools that are beyond the ability of ordinary users. In this work, we propose an automatic background replacement algorithm that can generate realistic, artifact-free images with diverse styles of skies. The key idea of our algorithm is to utilize visual semantics to guide the entire process including sky segmentation, search and replacement. We show that the proposed algorithm can automatically generate a set of visually pleasing results.

Improving Spatial Codification in Semantic Segmentation. In: IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), 2015. Quebec City: IEEE; 2015 This paper explores novel approaches for improving the spatial codification for the pooling of local descriptors to solve the semantic segmentation problem. We propose to partition the image into three regions for each object to be described: Figure, Border and Ground. This partition aims at minimizing the influence of the image context on the object description and vice versa by introducing an intermediate zone around the object contour. Furthermore, we also propose a richer visual descriptor of the object by applying a Spatial Pyramid over the Figure region. Two novel Spatial Pyramid configurations are explored: Cartesian-based and crown-based Spatial Pyramids. We test these approaches with state-of-the-art techniques and show that they improve the Figure-Ground based pooling in the Pascal VOC 2011 and 2012 semantic segmentation challenges.

Online movie ticket booking system for movies is a web-based program. This application allows users to purchase cinema tickets over the portal. To buy tickets, people must first register or log in. This website's backend is PHP and JavaScript, and the front end is HTML and CSS. All phases of the software development life cycle are efficiently managed in order to design and implement software. On the website, there are two panels: one for administrators and one for customers/users. The admin has the ability to add cinemas, movies, delete, halt execution, and add screens, among other things. The website is simple to navigate and appealing, saving the end user time.

This project is being considered in order to reduce and totally eliminate loss of customers to competitors, and save the company from folding up. The current system is manual and it is time consuming. It is also cost ineffective, and average return is low and diminishing. Currently, customers can call or walk-in in order to rent or reserve a vehicle. The staff of the company will check their file to see which vehicle is available for rental. The current system is error prone and customers are dissatisfied. The goal of this project is to automate vehicle rental and reservation so that customers do not need to walk-in or call in order to reserve a vehicle. They can go online and reserve any kind of vehicle they want and that is available. Even when a customer chooses to walk-in, computers are available for him to go online and perform his reservation. When he choose to reserve by phone, any of the customer service representatives can help him reserve the vehicle speedily and issue him a reservation number. The VRS will maintain the database of all vehicles the company has. It will also keep track of all vehicle reservation and return. Reports will be generated bi-weekly. Reports for the Accounts Manager will detail the cost incurred to maintain each vehicle and revenue accrued on each vehicle. Reports for the Maintenance Manager will detail the present mileage of the car in order for him to take care of the vehicle servicing, and when each vehicle will be due for tag renewal. The Branch Manager’s report will detail total cost incurred and total revenue accrued, and the status of each vehicle so that he can decide whether to sell the vehicle or still keep it.

A computer reservation system or central reservation system is a computerized system used to store and retrieve information and conduct transactions related to air travel, hotels, car rental, or activities. These systems typically allow users to book hotel rooms, rental cars, airline tickets as well as activities and tours. They also provide access to railway reservations and bus reservations in some markets, although these are not always integrated with the main system. For these systems to be accessible on mobile phones and computers outside the premises of the airport, cinema, train station or stadiums, they need to be on the internet or a network. This project focuses on the design and implementation of a web based cinema management system for the allocation of seat tickets online. The system would feature the registration of users, use of serial numbers and pins gotten from scratch cards sold and a printed slip. The system would have a store of all the seats and automate the generation of fresh serial numbers and pins.

CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems! Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected. R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production. An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred. R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance. Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production. It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this.
