Seismographs are used to detect and measure earthquakes by recording the seismic waves generated. A basic seismograph consists of a drum with paper that rotates constantly, a weight attached to a pen that remains stationary during shaking, and a spring or bar connecting the weight to a fixed point. When seismic waves pass during an earthquake, the drum and paper move while the weight and pen stay still, creating squiggly lines on the paper called a seismogram. By studying multiple seismograms, seismologists can determine the location and strength of the earthquake.

The immense amount of heat energy released from gravitational energy and from the decay of radioactive elements melted the entire planet, and it is still cooling off today. Denser materials like iron (Fe) sank into the core of the Earth, while lighter silicates (Si), other oxygen (O) compounds, and water rose near the surface.
The earth is divided into four main layers: the inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust. The core is composed mostly of iron (Fe) and is so hot that the outer core is molten, with about 10% sulphur (S). The inner core is under such extreme pressure that it remains solid. Most of the Earth's mass is in the mantle, which is composed of iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), aluminum (Al), silicon (Si), and oxygen (O) silicate compounds. At over 1000 degrees C, the mantle is solid but can deform slowly in a plastic manner. The crust is much thinner than any of the other layers, and is composed of the least dense potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and sodium (Na) aluminum-silicate minerals. Being relatively cold, the crust is rocky and brittle, so it can fracture in earthquakes.

A seismograph is an instrument for measuring earthquake (seismic) waves. They are held in a very solid position, either on the bedrock or on a concrete base. The seismometer itself consists of a frame and a mass that can move relative to it.
Seismographs are equipped with electromagnetic sensors that translate ground motions into electrical changes, which are processed and recorded by the instruments’ analog or digital circuits.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

happens where dense oceanic plates collide and slide beneath continental
plates.

3. Earthquakes generate seismic waves which can be detected with a sensitive
instrument called seismograph. Advances in seismograph technology have
increased our understanding of both earthquakes and the Earth itself.
Perhaps the earliest seismograph was invented in China A.D. 136 by a man
named Choko.
How to misure earthquakes
6. Most seismographs today are electronic, but a basic seismograph is
made of a drum with paper on it, a bar or spring with a hinge at one or
both ends, a weight, and a pen. The one end of the bar or spring is
bolted to a pole or metal box that is bolted to the ground. The weight
is put on the other end of the bar and the pen is stuck to the weight.
The drum with paper on it presses against the pen and turns
constantly. When there is an earthquake, everything in the
seismograph moves except the weight with the pen on it. As the drum
and paper shake next to the pen, the pen makes squiggly lines on the
paper, creating a record of the earthquake. This record made by the
seismograph is called a seismogram.
By studying the seismogram, the seismologist can tell how far away
the earthquake was and how strong it was. This record doesn't tell the
seismologist exactly where the epicenter was, just that the earthquake
happened so many miles or kilometers away from that seismograph.
To find the exact epicenter, you need to know what at least two other
seismographs in other parts of the country or world recorded. We'll get
to that in a minute.
