Alfred Wegener, a German meteorologist, proposed the continental drift theory which hypothesized that the continents were once joined together in a supercontinent called Pangaea approximately 200 million years ago. Wegener observed that the continents seemed to fit together like pieces of a puzzle. The continental drift theory provided explanations for fossil, rock, and climate evidence found on separated continents. However, the theory was controversial at the time because it lacked a mechanism for how the continents could drift apart.

Continental drift is the hypothesis that the Earth's continents have moved over geologic time relative to each other, thus appearing to have "drifted" across the ocean bed.
Wegener argued that there was once a super continent (which he named Pangea -meaning ''all land ) which split up over millions of year and gradually drifted over to their current place on earth at a rate of a few centimeter year.

8th Grade Integrated Science Chapter 14 Lesson 1 on the Continental Drift Hypothesis. This is a short introduction to Alfred Weger and the current evidence used to support his theory. There is a short explanation of the fossil and rock evidence found.
Plate tectonics is the theory that Earth's outer shell is divided into several plates that glide over the mantle, the rocky inner layer above the core. The plates act like a hard and rigid shell compared to Earth's mantle. This strong outer layer is called the lithosphere.
Plate Tectonics
Chapter 19
Plate Tectonics
• Plate tectonics - Earth’s surface composed thick plates that move
• Intense geologic activity is concentrated at plate boundaries
• Combination of continental drift and seafloor spreading hypotheses
proposed in late 1960s
Review: Three Types of Plate Boundaries
Transform Convergent Divergent
(strike-slip) (subduction) (spreading)
But how do we
know that plates
move at all ?
Early Case for Continental Drift
• Puzzle-piece fit of
coastlines of Africa and
South America has long
been known
•In early 1900s, Alfred Wegner noted South America, Africa, India,
Antarctica, and Australia have almost identical rocks and fossils
Early Case for Continental Drift
– Glossopteris (plant),
Lystrosaurus and
Cynognathus (animals)
fossils found on all five
continents
– Mesosaurus (reptile)
fossils found in Brazil and
South Africa only
Glaciers
• Most of the Earth's ice is found in Antarctic continental glacier.
• Where are some other continental glaciers ?
• Glacial striations on a
rock from stones grinding at
the base of a heavy ice sheet
leave these shiny linear
marks on the bedrock below.
Glacial Characteristics
• Glaciers flow downhill as a solid mass that creates channels, and
walls made of ground up rock debris known as a merraine.
Erosional Landscapes
• Erosional landforms produced by
valley glaciers include:
– U-shaped valleys
– Hanging valleys
• Smaller tributary glacial valleys
left stranded above more
quickly eroded central valleys
Early Case for Continental Drift
• Wegner reassembled continents into
the supercontinent Pangaea
• Late Paleozoic glaciation patterns on
southern continents best explained by
their reconstruction into (Pangaea)
Gondwanaland
Early Case for Continental Drift
• Coal beds of North America and Europe
indicate Laurasia super continent
• Continental Drift hypothesis initially
rejected
– Wegener could not come up with viable
driving force
– continents should not be able to “plow
through” sea floor rocks
The Earth's Magnetic Field
Can Give Us Clues
Paleomagnetism and Continental Drift Revived
• Studies of rock magnetism allowed
determination of magnetic pole
locations (close to geographic poles)
• Paleomagnetism uses mineral
magnetic alignment and dip angle to
determine the distance to the
magnetic pole when rocks formed
– Steeper dip angles indicate rocks formed
closer to the magnetic poles
• Rocks with increasing age point to
pole locations increasingly far from
present magnetic pole positions
Paleomagnetism and
Continental Drift Revived
• Apparent polar wander curves
for different continents suggested
plate movement !
• Wegner was right!

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
7. • You will be piecing together a puzzle of the
supercontinent Pangea based on fossil and rock
evidence on the present day continents.
• 1. On the puzzle pieces handout, assign a color to each
type of fossil or mountain belt in the legend and color
the areas on the landmasses according to the legend.
• 2. Use scissors to cut along the borders of the
continents.These are the
• approximate shape of the continents after Pangea broke
up.
8. • 3. Place the continents on a piece of construction
paper and move them
• around using the fossil and mountain chain evidence
to match the continents together in the position
they were in when they were part of
•Pangea. The pieces may not fit together exactly!
• 4.When you have assembled Pangea based on the
fossil and rock locations, glue the continents onto
your construction paper in the shape of
• the supercontinent. Glue the legend to your puzzle.
10. 1. What is the idea of
continental drift?
2. Which 2 continents have
the most obvious fit of the
coastlines?
3. How were the fossil
symbols and mountain belts
helpful in deciding where
to move the continents?
11. 4. Why don’t the present
shapes of the continents fit
perfectly into a
supercontinent?
5. Which fossil occurs on the
most landmasses? what does
this suggest about when
these particular continents
broke up?
19. EVIDENCE: CLIMATE
•The appearance of Glossopteris plant
on so many different continents also
supportWegener’s idea that were once
connected and had similar climates
20. Glacial deposits and rock surfaces scoured and
polished by glaciers are found in several land masses.
(South America,Africa, India, and Australia)
22. A CONTROVERSIAL IDEA
WHY?
•“How did the
continents drift
apart?” = REJECTED
•Theory: moved by the
spin of the Earth.
•Not enough evidence
23. EXIT SLIP
1. Who was the person who came up with the
hypothesis of Continental Drift?
2. What was the large landmass called?
3. Name three main types of
evidence that supports Continental Drift.
4. Why was the theory controversial in its time?
