Section Two: Vetting Alternative Solutions The above ideas on how to address the opportunities
in the Starbucks case are prioritized from highest to lowest ideas. The criteria used was looking at
solving the key gaps, providing for long term sustainability, positively impacting the company s
profitability, and cost of solution. The top three will be explored in further detail below.
Executive leadership succession management program
Tracking and creating ways to decrease employee turnover
Training on producing quality beverages and customer service
Hiring and selection using person job, person organization match, and realistic and brand approach
Hiring a new regional employee for innovation
Training of youth and undereducated racial and ethnic minorities, women and older workers.
Onboarding program for new hires
Succession planning for key positions (not executive leadership) Executive leadership succession
management program. From this case analysis, the key to the opportunities at Starbuck resulted in
not having a succession management program and the cause of loss to their competitive advantage.
This resulted in poor hiring and training of their partners, decreasing the quality of the beverages
prepared, innovation, and customer service. This solution ranks number one due to its potential to
solve all of the gaps identified and put Starbucks back on its successful path of sustained
competitive advantage. This is also a solution to plan and

In the Wheel End market, the competitors are KIC and Webb Wheel. ABC also has independent
distributors who would provide additional sales channel to the end users.
None of the manufacturing competitors have utilized the web to provide value added services to
customers. Their website is setup to provide basic product information to customers in Portable
Document Format (PDF) but there is no feedback or collaborative tools to help the customer have a
long lasting and memorable experience.
Here are some of the current website examples of ABC direct competitors. Most of the competitors
have a similar web theme shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3. They do not look at the internet as a
medium to increase customer demand or improve the product image and branding.
Figure 2: KIC Website
Figure 3: Webb Wheel Website.
There are independent online part distributors such as truckspring.com which have the capabilities
of a modern e commerce website such as shopping cart, customer service and search capabilities.
However, most of them are for automotive and consumer trucks instead of commercial trucking.
The commercial trucking components market is in the infant stages of E Commerce and if ABC
will build a good website, they can become the trend setter in the Commercial Vehicle market. The
website can be shown at different truck trade shows which will help educate customers on the
product lines but also on

Western Civilization Essay
Western Civilization: Beginnings to Present Although Western culture has been defined by both
Christian and secular values across the course of time, the West s primary goal is to achieve
economic supremacy, using Christian and secular philosophies, as well as colonization and
technological innovation as means to achieve this goal. Of the features that define western culture,
the most unique is democracy. Originating in ancient Athens, democracy created a sense of pride in
one s government which, in later centuries, would evolve into nationalism. In Athens, democracy
allowed the people to have a say in their government, furthering the unification of their empire and
thus strengthening it. Out of this democratic world came many of the... Show more content on

This however ended as Emperor Constantine adopted Christianity in the fourth century A.D. As
emperor Constantine saw that it would be more beneficial to stop persecuting the Christians and
accept them to avoid another civil war, he became a Christian. This was only the start as
Christianity spread throughout the European continent and Emperor Theodosius established it as
the official religion of Rome in 380. This proved especially beneficial for the empire as it
allowed Rome to be governed during its greatest extent. When Rome official fell in 476 to the
barbaric tribes of the Germanic region, Christianity was the uniting factor as the chaos of local
groups sought to hold power. Out of this developed a complex feudal system comprised of lords,
vassals, and serfs along with the power and wealth of the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church
demanded enormous amounts of money from the people as they sought redemption in times
stricken with the Black Death and famine thus allowing the monasteries to emerge as the source of
riches and the Church as the largest landholder in all of Europe. As the Church s power grew
towards the first millennia, and had sucked the wealth from nearly all of its local citizens, they
desired to find the holy land. Despite the first commandment of thou shall not murder and the
Christian idea of turn the other cheek, the Crusades were some of the bloodiest battles in European
history. These crusades, although against Christian

Fast operation. High reliability. Long service life. Compact design. Disadvantages: Control

Miniature Circuit Breakers are electromechanical devices which protect an electrical circuit from
an over current as well as overload condition. MCB is a better than Fuse since it does not require
replacement once an overload is detected. In the case of tripping because of a current overload,
MCBs are very easy to reset, which is much simpler to do that having to replace blown fuses.
MCBs also trip to stop the current from flowing much faster than fuses can operate. When the
current exceeds its pre determined value, solenoid forces the moveable contact to open and the
MCB turns off and discontinuing the current to flow in the circuit. To resume the flow of

a lot of good people in it and includes the art of Hip Hop Dance. There are a lot of types of dance,
but a popular form of dance today is called Hip Hop, which dates back to as far as the 1960s! Hip
Hop has a short but interesting history; it plays an important role in many communities, and can
be beneficial to lots of people. People started dancing for religious reasons such as praying and over
time it became a sport (World Book 24). Hip Hop is its own danceform but it has a lot in common
with street dance and break dancing. Street dance started in about the 1920 s and 30 s (Torrington

violent because of a DJ named DJ Afrika Bambaataa. DJ Afrika Bambaataa brought anti violence

Socrates Justice
The topic of justice is constantly debated by the philosopher Socrates. Though he had many
different discussions with many different people throughout his life, Socrates was never able to
decide what he believed justice was. In one particular discussion with two of his comrades, Glaucon
and Adeimantus , Socrates realized that studying an individual wouldn t help him learn the true
meaning of justice. If he really wanted to understand justice, it might be easier to try to observe it
in a large group rather than a single person. By observing what justice was in a community, there
was a possibility that finding a justice in a single person would become much easier. The three men
then decided to create a theoretical city and examine the different... Show more content on

Certain professions allow some people to earn more money than others in a society. Those with
more wealth are able to by more luxuries and tend to become addicted to the luxurious lifestyle
that they have earned. The rich start to become greedy, and want to be able to maintain their
own wealth without doing much work, even if it means acting unjustly. Conversely, those who
don t make as much money may struggle to keep themselves out of poverty. It is more difficult
to provide food and shelter for themselves, which may lead to things like stealing and other
unjust acts. This system of wealth and poverty create large amounts of injustice in societies
around the world, but eliminating wealth and poverty won t make things any better. In order to
completely eliminate wealth and poverty, you would need to eliminate the idea of money. If no
one can earn more or less than others, no one can be wealthy or impoverished. But without
money, injustice would be even more prominent than before. In the beginning of Republic
Glaucon argues the following: Indeed every man believes that injustice is far more profitable to
himself than justice ( Plato pg. 37). Each of us subconsciously tries to do what is best for
ourselves. We want to be able to survive in the world and before we can even think about doing
things for other people, we have to make sure that we are taken care of. If this city didn t have

all around the store, there are red and black phones. The black is for employees, the red ones, are
for YOU. Almost every store is different depending on the location, for example in Ohio, or in
Grand RapidsMichigan. So, if you ask your greeter where a map is of the store you can see the
different departments, this is important because there are at least three red phones in each
department, as well as SOME price scan stations. Red phones help organize your questions to the

Leave your carts, NOT YOUR PERSONALS, but your carts with the greeter. Take the kids, or
leave your amigo, electric cart, with the greeter, grab your walker and then pee. Many vendors

uniforms, but, THEY DON T WORK FOR MEIJER S. Refrain from asking where the butter is,
but you can ask for recipes! If you see a mess, don t ask them to clean it, use a red phone in your
area or ask the person in that department, this is important because we are a busy store. And we
wouldn t want to be taking care of a mess in grocery when we are supposed to be organizing the

Several macroeconomic factors indicate that the basic ingredients for successful creation of a

When one considers the array of financial services that are available as a part of the formal financial

1)Cash is expensive, while there are several perceived benefits of transacting in cash (such as
instantaneous settlement, relative anonymity, and the notion of security associated with holding

On August 6, 1945, an experimental form of warfare hit Dr. Shima s office in Hiroshima,

supreme form of weaponry that was termed the nuclear bomb. The bombs that hit Hiroshima and
Nagasaki, Japan, were dubbed the Little Boy and Fat Man , respectively, and they killed
approximately 200,000 people after one week of impact. Health problems such as cancer (breast,

For the first time in history, the world saw the potential destruction caused by certain devices,
such as the atomic bomb. The atomic bomb could massacre thousands of citizens in one go, tear
down buildings of all sizes, and destroy a strong nation s economy. The world now knew what
could happen in a WWIII scenario. Now, almost every country knows how to construct a nuclear
fission bomb and some countries are even working on creating a hydrogen bomb (nuclear
fusion). The destruction that can be caused by one atomic bomb is plenty to force a country into
surrender, as multiple atomic bombs could obliterate a whole continent. Such a scenario took
place when the Soviet Union and the United States were in the Cold War. Either side had atomic
weapons stockpiled and a few buttons could have ended the lives of millions of innocents. During
the bombing of Hiroshima, death was painless, but the long term damage dealt to survivors caused
immense pain. Survivors dealt with thick, figure altering keloid scars all over their face and chest,
agony from untreated cancer, cataract, and infected wounds from untreated cuts. After the world

The Accident Of Emergency Medical Technician
I sharply inhaled as I heard the muffled sound of footsteps, tuning them out to return to my

not expect was to see a team of Emergency Medical Technicians struggling to get my father onto a

radically different from other late nights. Now at this moment I was paralyzed with fear and had
no idea that the events that would unfold next would test my endurance in the most strenuous
way. It was four in the morning and I was having difficulty processing what was unfolding even
though it was already laid out before me. Once our ambulance arrived to the emergency room
we were told that my father s heart beat was irregularly low and that several of his arteries were
clogged. The Electrocardiogram showed that my father had a mild heart attack and was on his
way to a more severe one, one that the doctors did not think he could come back from. His arteries
had failed to receive, as well as export bloodfrom his heart and the doctors proceeded to try to
place a stent in order to keep the paths clean. However, they continued to collapse and a stent was
no longer an option. My father urgently needed a triple bypass,

What Is Bradford s Use Of The Barbarians In Of Plymouth...
When people of two different cultures meet, they often have unjustified negative perceptions each
other. Such was the case of the Europeans and the Native Americans during the Age of Exploration.
Native Americans would sometimes attack the settlers and look down upon them in disdain. In
turn, the Europeans would fight back while also calling the natives savages. These hostile
exchanges frequently occur because their leaders think too much about the differences between the
groups that they forget the similarities in that they are all humans. Perceptions often change when
those of different cultures put aside those differences and begin to cooperate with each other in a
common goal. In fact, that is exactly what happened when William Bradford and his group of
pilgrims came to Cape Cod. Initially, there was an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In that book, he wrote his truthful thoughts of the world around him. When he first spotted the
Native Americans after he had arrived, he noted that these savage barbarians, when they met with
them (as after will appear) were readier to fill their sides full of arrows than otherwise (Bradford
8). In effect, his usage of the derogatory terms savage and barbarians demonstrates his disrespect for
their culture. Not only does he describe the natives as savage once, but he also continues to use that
term nearly five times. Bradford also uses many other words to characterize the natives negatively.
For instance, he writes that ...the Indians came skulking about them, and would sometimes show
themselves aloof off, but when any approached near them, they would run away... (16). In
describing the actions of the Native Americans, Bradford uses the word skulking, which has a
negative connotation due to its close association to cowardliness. In fact, by writing that they ran
away, Bradford implies that they are cowardly and afraid of the

The astounding perils of young love has been eloquently captured in the story of Romeo and

would choose to deny the Montague name so that he may share his life with her. Surprised, Juliet
returns to where Romeo awaits her.
During this scene, the soft light continually falls upon Juliet s angelic face, yet Romeo
predominantly remains in the darkness, shadowed. This may reference the goodness of the
Capulets and the supposed evilness of the Montagues from Juliet s standpoint. The camera is also
pointed up during this scene when directed towards Juliet, yet pointed down when directed towards
Romeo. Zefferelli may have used these camera angles to show that Juliet is considered someone
Romeo admires although he is considered a lesser man by the Capulet family.
As the scene continues, Juliet explains to Romeo the consequences of them being caught together,
and as she sadly and amorously gazes at him, he hides behind a tree branch to protect himself.

Bernarda Alba
This can be seen in Lorca s play The House of Bernarda Alba. As stated, being gay in a country of
expected male masculinity, it was difficult for Lorca to conform to society. Even in the home, his
father and siblings did not get along well with him, and even after his death attempted to destroyed
any evidence that could insinuate his homosexuality. Those who were in his social class despised
him for being queer and having so much talent, leaving him with little friends. Because of this,
amorous frustration, fertility, and loneliness are common themes among his plays. Lorca utilizes
women, mainly, as his protagonists to execute such themes, who find they are in a position where
true loveor dreams are unclaimable. In The House of Bernarda

Breast Reduction
Breast reduction is a type of cosmetic plastic surgery that removes excess glandular tissue, fat, and
skin from the breasts. This will not only aid in making the breasts more proportional to the rest of
the body, but it also makes them lighter, firmer, and less prone to sagging. Many patients visit the
Aesthetic Center by Kaiser Permanente in Honolulu for cosmetic plastic surgeryand breast

large breasts.

There are many benefits that come from having a breast reduction procedure. This form of cosmetic
plastic surgery creates a more balanced body by removing breast weight that might have affected

Jessie Pope s Attitude toward War in the Poem Who s For...
Jessie Pope was a journalist who wrote recruitment poems for the Daily Mail during the First
World War. The poems she did write were positive propaganda poems for the war; her objective
was to stimulate patriotism in the readers so that the men would join the forces. Pope wrote a
persuasive poem where she compared war to a game. This is illustrated in the title Who s for the
game? It shows that her attitude toward war was that it was a great big event that everyone
should take part in one way or another. The title is a short and punchy question inviting anyone to
answer. This gives the wrong impression of the war, it is misleading. Pope was ridiculed for doing
this, but if she did write the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The second verse talks of patriotism, who ll give his country a hand in fighting against the

in reference to the cowardice of those who do not join in comparison with those willing to give
their lives to their country. The cowards are the man with a seat in the stand that are compared with

Banned Language Comments
Today, everyone has electronic device to go online to use social media or read the news daily. When
everyone in the world can communicate with each other anytime they want, there will be the debate
that whether government should moderated the language that people use on internet or not. Some
people believe that aggressive language that people use on internetmay hurt other people feeling,
and it could be consider as cyber bully. Hence, they want all of the comment online should be

comments should be moderated: First Amendment, conversation, and fearlessness.

Jack Kevorkian and Euthanasia
Euthanasia The thin line between life and death has become an ethical issue many health care
providers and the government have long tried to ignore. The understanding that life begins at birth,
and ends when the heartbeat and breathing have ceased has long been deemed factual. Medical
technologies have changed this with respirators, artificial defibrillators, and transplants (Macionis,
2009). Thus medical and legal experts in the United States define death as an irreversible state
involving no response to stimulation, no movement or breathing, no reflexes, and no indication of
brain activity (Macionis, 2009, p. 436). The process of deciding when a terminally ill patient should

Smacking Persuasive Speech
Smacking children has been around for centuries; however the purpose of it has altered from the
beginning to now. It started as a technique to discipline your children but now days are used
largely by teenager parents, who have lower patients and low self control. I m strongly against
this concept of smacking your children for discipline, it s disgraceful to think that people in this
century still use the assistance of this conception. It s hard to believe, but sometimes children
smacking is only done to achieve satisfaction, for example an angry dad from work might come to

trying to get across was that once you violate or smack your children, it influence the child to

your children. Statistics shows that 69 precent of Australia parents still find the use for smacking

The result of these heavy projectiles fired at such great velocity create not only a hole in the
target, but in targets such as the human body create a wide area around the wound itself known
as a temporary wound channel. This temporary wound channel is caused by hydrostatic shock.
Hydrostatic shock can produce incapacitating effects much more quickly than blood loss alone.
A shotgun firing buckshot, fires multiple projectiles that impact the body all at once and cause a
shock overload to the system. This shock overload is very effective at incapacitating a human
being. A shotgun firing slugs that are huge chunks of lead and so heavy they are weighted in
ounces rather than grains has the double effect of a massive wound channel coupled a with
shock overload. In contrast, bullets fired from a handgun must actually come into contact with
the adversary s tissue or organs in order to disrupt them. This means that in order for bullets fired
from a handgun to physically incapacitate the target we must hit something important, such as
the spinal column, heart, brain or major blood vessels. In essence, we must be more accurate
with a pistol then with a rifle and that is a mighty tall order. So, why do we carry the pistol? The
answer is, we carry a handgun simply because it is portable not because it is super duper dealer of
damage and death. Common sense would tell us that a bigger bullet is a better bullet. But, bigger

Product Life Cycle
Product Life Cycle
Introduction: This paper aims at analysing the usefulness of the Product Life Cycle (PLC) concept
to the marketers. It will describe the different stages of the PLC concept and their respective
implications on the marketing mix and the strategies which can be adopted during the different
phases.
Every new product right from its entrance in the market till its elimination from the market goes
through a certain sequence of stages known as Product Life Cycle. There are four stages popularly
addressed by the product life cycle which are: Introduction, growth, maturity and decline recognized
as distinct stages in the sales history of a product (Kotler, 1984).[pic]

Each stage of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second is in terms of manufacturers attempting to secure as many distribution outlet
possibilities as possible, as the product has now lost its innovative appeal. In distribution terms they
move from exclusive, then to selective and finally to intensive distribution. The philosophy of the
latter is that maximum exposure at the point of sale is probably as important as brand awareness.
o Promotion: During this phase promotion tends to change from one of creating awareness to one
of attempting to create an identifiable brand. Promotional expenditure is probably still quite high.
Competitors will know the perceived weaknesses of your product, so they can emphasize the
strength of theirs. Although it might seem that being in the market first is a good policy, it is also
a high risk policy. Unless the company is large enough to sustain a costly failure at this stage, or
has other products to fall back upon, then such a policy is very high risk indeed.
Maturity and saturation are dealt with together, because the maturity phase is the phase where the
product s sales level off to a gradual peak over a longer period (often years or decades). The
saturation phase is from its peak, gradually downwards to the phase where sales start to decelerate
towards the decline phase. In fact, many marketing authors miss out the saturation phase altogether
and class all of this phase as maturity . During this

Like The Greedy Wolf Analysis
In the years of 1807 to 1831, tragedy struck for The Blackfoot Indians, the British, and American
citizens. In Like the Greedy Wolf, the article focuses more on the history and events people assume
took place at the time, but did these events actually happen? The article does not go into detail on
the impact it made upon the leaders and people involved, nor does it give the most accurate, in

The Dangers Of Mass Shootings In The Lottery By Shirley...
Her controversial story tells of an unnamed village who conducts an annual lottery in which every
resident participates. With visual imagery, Jackson tricks the audience into believing this is an
innocent village; however, as the story unfolds, the dark nature of these residents becomes apparent.
On the day of the lottery, individuals are called to select a slip from a tattered box. Ultimately, the
resident possessing a slip marked with a black dot gets stoned to death. No one questions the
lottery, and the original purpose remains a mystery. Some say it is beneficial for the village s
harvest. Only when Tessie Hutchinson discovers she is the winner, does she object to the lottery
and argue how the system is unfair. Her protest fails, as the villagers persist in the brutal stoning.
Jackson s story reveals the dangers of blindly following tradition and the darker aspects of human
nature, such as the absolute cruelty in people s actions. Focusing on recent mass shootings and the
parallelisms in attitudes between Jackson s villagers and Americans reveal how daily life in the
United Statesis becoming a lottery.
There is a link between the villager s lottery and American s daily lives. For the small village, the
lottery is a deadly game of chance, in which the unlucky winner is incapable of escaping his or her
fate. Reflecting on recent attacks, the chances of death due to mass shootings are becoming
statistically inevitable. They are occurring in churches,

Assimilation leads to us to forget what we would ve rather been, just because we have the want
to fit in. In order not to be rejected, we need to fit in with what is expected of us. Society
continuously feeds us these thoughts so much, that we begin to believe that the only way to
live and be themselves is to be what others want them to be. But really, in order to stay a true self

that we are agreeing with society, but has anyone really thought about it? Who gets decided if

Analysis Of John Perry s Hayek Argument

Hayek Philosophical Argument In Hayek s argument, he explains how socialism s centralized
planning is an exponentially inferior economic policy compared to the competitive nature of
democracy due to the restrictions government planning imposes on a population s ability to choose.
He also expresses concern over similarities between the attitude of United States population and
socialist Germany regarding our growing desire to organize and plan everything, noting that we are
headed in the same general direction as pre fascist Germany. His argument has the intention of
convincing people to stray from this path of organizing the economy and instead to simply let the

Whenever they realize that having leaders with total power is convenient, it s a slippery slope to
totalitarianism. Totalitarianism with a group of leaders under the chief of command who, by the
nature of society, are unavoidably the worst pick of the lot. This is due to needing a hive mind,
which is most easily found among the lower intellectuals, as well as people who have no strong
ideals and who are easily persuaded. This similar mindset, for this system to work, has to be
accepted by the public as well. The individuals of the public are also apt to be treated without
common decency, the leaders justifying their actions by claiming it is for the good of society.
Without Rule of Law, there s nothing keeping this governmentin check either. Those who are
desperate to avoid fascism, and want to do so by organizing an economy and socializing it, will see
that the fruits of their labor have produced the exact effect they wanted to evade. He goes on to
explain that the economy of a nation is extremely too complicated to be controlled and directed by
a government. There are too many minute details that make up the economy as a whole to be
effectively and consciously planned. This is how competition is the better alternative. Individuals of
a society, left to their own designs, can each be a small director of the economy. Never having
enough power to take over another citizen s life, but each playing a small part in making such a

Effective Strength And Conditioning Program For An Injured...
Despite an effective strength and conditioning program that helps prevent injuries, young athletes
will still get hurt. When injuries do occur, a coach must know the proper treatment steps because he
or she has a legal duty to provide immediate emergency care for an injured athlete. In this regard, the
coach must administer the first aid or he or she must make sure a medical provider such as an
athletic trainer provides the proper treatment. Furthermore, a coach must understand the subsequent
rehabilitation involved that will successfully return the injured athlete to full participation. Because
anklesprains are the most common basketball injury, this chapter will discuss the treatment plan
considerations.
The initial objective with an ankle sprain is to control swelling that includes protection, rest, ice,
compression, and evaluation (P.R.I.C.E) treatment. The P.R.I.C.E treatment plan involves 1)
protecting the ankle with braces, wraps, or crutches, 2) resting the ankle by not doing activities that
cause pain, 3) icing the ankle for 20 minutes and off for 60 minutes throughout the first 48 hours
after the injury, compressing the ankle with a wrap, 4) elevating the ankle at or above the heart.
After the initial treatment, there are three primary modalities available to treat an ankle injury:
surgery, conservative treat with cast immobilization, and functional treatment. Studies have found
functional treatment as the best modality to treat Grade 1 and 2 ankle injuries

Coso Range Shamanism
The Coso Mountain Range is located at the intersection of the Great Basin and California culture
area just above the eastern California desert. This region was left with arroyo walls, lava flows
and pyroclastic boulders covered with petroglyphs of zoomorphic and anthropomorphic images
(127). Petroglyphs are images created by carving, pecking or incising images into rock surfaces.
The most common rock art element found in the Coso Range is that of bighorn sheep (129).
Although bighorn sheep images were common in other parts of the Great Basin and the Southwest,
these elements were seen in far greater quantities in the Coso Range. The bighorn sheep image
represents more than half of the 100,000 rock art elements discovered in this region. Many... Show

This model suggest that bighorn sheep represent mythical spirit helpers that were in the center of
shamanistic activities, including hallucinations and trances. Since bighorn sheep held a minimal
role in the diet during the late Haiwee and early Marana Period, rituals performed resulted in
images of bighorn sheep being carved to attract rain to the Coso Range as a means to increase
productivity of plants. It was said that Numic men would enter a dream states or drug induced
trances during rain rituals. The mental imprints obtained during these experiences were transcribed
as rock art images. These images were thought to portray transformation of men into spirit helpers
or bighorn sheep. These half anthropomorphic, half zoomorphic figures recorded were featured as
evidence, however, problems arose with this model. For instance, this model required the rock art to
have been created post 1000BP, since the model proposes that Numic groups from the Great Basin
were the ones that brought these rituals. However, the Numic Expansion did not occur until
1000BP and bighorn sheep petroglyphs seem to have developed in the Coso Range prior to the
Numic Expansion. Also, the hallucinogens that produce the particular sequence that some have
argued these images capture were not available in prehistoric North America. In addition, the
ethnographic footing of this model is challenged since no ethnographic connection has been
proposed between the native people and the pecked images of bighorn sheep for rain making. Some
ethnographic accounts connect shamanism with the Coso region, weather control as a shamanic
activity, rain shamans with bighorn spirit helpers and rock art with shamans, but no particular
ethnographic evidence has been made to connect all concepts. This

According to Bureau of Justice Statistics (2012), Recidivism is measured by criminal acts that
resulted in the rearrests, reconviction, or return to prison with or without a new sentence during a

If the hypothesis is confirmed the theory will suggest that the lower the education level of an
individual, the more apt that individual is to having a hard time finding work. If an individual,
who has been to prison or jail, gets released into society with a low education level they will have
a hard time finding a job. If this individual cannot find a job they will most likely turn to crime to

higher the recidivism rate is.
If the hypothesis is not confirmed it will suggest that there is no connection between education
levels and recidivism rates back into jail or prison. If not proved the hypothesis will also show that
individuals released back into society turn back to crime for other reasons and not anything to do
with their education levels, thus proving that education levels have no effect on recidivism rates.
Background/Literature review Recidivism is the result of a former prisoner relapsing into criminal
activity and returning to prison for a new offense. It is estimated that approximately two thirds of

First Person Narrative Essay
The first person narrative is a story told from the first person perspective. The narrator is speaking
directly about him or herself. The first person narrator can be either subjective or objective. The
third objective narrative is a story told by a nonparticipating character. The narrator is usually
detached from the story. Sometimes, the narratorcompletely penetrates the mindof a character. Third
person narration is often used in documentaries. The omniscient narrators are often not part of the
story but are all knowing observers. These narrators tell the reader all the facts we need to know to
fully understand the story. Since the woman thinks that she is seeing a ghost, I would use the first
person narration. This way the camera can capture all the action through her eyes and emphasizes

The story might be told by a group of people or just one person. For instance, the story can be
created by the producers, the directors, and the writers working together. However, in a film with
voice over narrative, the off screen narrator is usually also a character in the story but not always.
The narration in realist movies is almost invisible. The story unfolds by itself in a chronological
order. The narration in classical movies is more obvious. There is a discreet storyteller who help
direct the story and keep everything on track. In formalist movies, the narrator is manipulative.
The narrator often destroys the chronological order of the story and restructures events to
emphasize a point. The narration in The Usual Suspects is conspicuous. Verbal Kint is the narrator
as well as one of the main characters in the film. He is manipulative because the story is told from

How Addiction Effects the Psychological and Physical...
Darlene Sledge
Fundamentals Of
Research Writing
January 23, 2008
I. Introduction
This qualitative research will investigate how addiction effects the psychological and physical
functioning of daily life. Psychological functioning is the cognitive and behavioral characteristics of
an individual and how they work.
This research relates to counseling. The field of counseling looks at methods that will engage
an individual with personal issues and how they cope on daily basis. I have several reasons why
this topic is of interest to me. I am a Certified Alcohol/Drug Counselor, currently employed as a
supervisor at a Women s Residential Misa Facility. I have been in this field for 10 years and I

This lack of control is the result of alcohol or drug induced changes in the brain. Those changes, in
turn, cause behavior changes.
The brains of addicted people have been modified by the drug in such a way that absence of the
drug makes a signal to their brain that is equivalent to the signal of when you are starving , says
National Institute of Drug Abuse Director Dr. Nora Volkow. It is as if the individual was in a state
of deprivation, where taking the drug is indispensable for survival. It s as powerful as that.
Addiction grows more serious over time. Substance use disorders travel along a continuum. This
progression can be measured by the amount, frequency, and context of a person s substance use.
As their illness deepens, addicted people need more alcohol or other drugs; they may use more
often, and use in situations they never imagined when they first began to drink or take drugs. The
illness becomes harder to treat and the related health problems, such as organ disease, become
worse.
This is not something that develops overnight for any individual, says addiction expert Dr.
Kathleen Brady. Generally there s a series of steps that individuals go through from
experimentation and occasional use [to] the actual loss of control of use. And it really is that
process that defines addiction. (HBO: Addiction: What Is

The Blues, A Genre Of Music
Does one have to be black and from the south to play the blues?
The blues, a genre of music so well known and so universal, that one knows is associated with
black culture; and forever connected to it. However, some may argue that not anyone can play the
blues and blues is only black music. That being said, does it matter what the skin color of an
individual may be to play the blues? In contrast I strongly believe anyone can play the blues
because music is the purest form of creativity and communication.
The reality is that today it is seen it all over, countless of people from many parts of the globe
perform this genre of music known as The Blues. It is played by the millions and by many
different races some of which are not from the south; but is it wrong for them to play it? Certain
individuals may believe that playing the blues, one has to be black to even be considered. There
is an individual who argues that one needs to really have The Blues to play them and it is only
black music. (Harris, 2015 n.p) On the other hand I would consider that the culture or race of the
performer does not matter. People from all races and backgrounds experience the blues, this genre
of music has become universal; it is a part of world music now. it is wonderful to think that a genre
of music once viewed as wrong or barbaric has become so well popularized and loved.
When one thinks of the blues one almost always pictures a lone black man in his guitar singing his
troubles away.

Analysis Of Okefenokee Swamp
Okefenokee Swamp is a wildlife preserve on the Florida Georgia border, 50 miles from the
Atlantic coast. The Okefenokee Swamp was designated a wilderness park in 1974 to protect the
vast quantities and diversity of species in this unique park. To explain the environment of the
swamp the author uses pathos and logos. In the first passage, to covay logos, the author used
specific numbers like 25 mi wide and 40 mi long The uses of specific number like this gives a
scale for the sizes of the swamp. Also using specific values like 175 species of birds and at least
40 species of mammals... this gives the reader a scale on the diversity of the swamp helping the
reader understand the environment. In the second passage the author used specific numbers

Second World War Dbq Essay
In the days of the Second World War, the United States was thrusted into being the primary
provider of supplies whether it was food or steel. This presented many challenges; how would
the U.S. truly get out of the great depression? How would the country amply provide a work
force in a world where males dominated the labor industry, the same males that would go off to
fight the war? To answer these questions, we must look at several sources such as Roosevelt s
famous fireside chats, how the U.S. population at home aided the war effort and the role of
minorities.
To begin, the American homefront was riddled with ways citizens did their part. This comprised
several different procedures. Victory gardens were planted all around the U.S. , these... Show more

Rationing played a pivotal in U.S. success on the homefront.
The Homefront also had a distinct lack of a labor workforce as more and more troops left to fight.
This called upon women to fill in jobs they would otherwise never do. Also, minorities were
thrusted in positions which they had never been before due to racial segregation, Franklin D.
Roosevelt said it best in his fireside chat on october 12,1942. In some communities, employers
dislike to employ women. In others they are reluctant to hire Negroes. In still others, older men
are not wanted. We can no longer afford to indulge such prejudices or practices. Roosevelt had
backed the need for no discrimination in the labor force with executive order 8802, this order
was composed in 1941 and stated that there shall not be discrimination in defense industries. The
result was 8 million women stepping into the labor force, and by 1944 over 5 million African
Americans worked to fuel the American war machine. Unfortunately post World War Two brought
the firing of many minorites who were the first to be fired when cut backs had to be made to meet
the non war economy of the U.S. The Fair Employment Practices Commision which investigated
racial discrimination in the workplace of World War Two America disappeared directly after the war.
Unfortunately the homefront was not all roses

Elizabethan Era Marriage
In the Shakespearean Era, marriage was the highlight of a person s life. Marriage usually occurred
at age 24 for women and age 27 for men, though marriage was legal at age 12 for girls and 14 for
boys. Weddings had to be preceded by three crying of the banns unless a special marriage
certificate was obtained. The wedding feast was an important part of the marriageand was
meticulously planned for. Marriages often functioned as a way for families to increase their
wealth, and women were expected to bring a dowry into the marriage. After marriage, women
were expected to obey their husbands and run their household. Shakespeare was married to
Anne Hathaway and had three children with her. In Shakespearean Era England, the legal age for
marriage was 12 for girls and 14 for boys. Despite this, most people married at a later age because
they had to save enough money to afford a marriage. The average Shakespearean Era woman got
married at age 24 and the average Shakespearean era man got married at age 27. The legal age of
consent was 21 years old so anyone who... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

FT-Ir Advantages
The measured signal is digitized and sent to the computer where the Fourier transformation takes
place. The final infrared spectrum is then presented to the user for interpretation. A background
spectrum must also be measured with no sample in the beam. This can be compared to the
measurement with the sample in the beam to determine the percent transmittance. This technique
results in a spectrum which has all of the instrumental characteristics removed [195]. Some of the
major advantages of FT IR over the dispersive technique include: Speed: Because all of the
frequencies are measured simultaneously, most measurements by FT IR are made in a matter of
seconds rather than several minutes. This is referred to as the Felgett Advantage. Sensitivity: The
detectors employed are much more sensitive. The optical throughput is much higher (referred to as
the Jacquinot Advantage) results in lower noise levels and the fast scans. Mechanical Simplicity:
The moving mirror in the interferometer is the only continuously moving part in the instrument.
Internally Calibrated: These instruments employ a helium neon laser as an internal wavelength
calibration standard (referred to as the Connes Advantage). These instruments are self calibrating
and never need to be calibrated by the user. These advantages make extremely accurate
measurements and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Claudia Garrity Mrs. Proud The Butterfly Revolution, William Butler Lord of the Flies, William
Goulding 1 221; 1 208, Response #2 The setting in the two novels plays important roles in both
of the plots. In The Butterfly Revolution, the setting shifts in the very beginning of the story. In
the journal Winston Weyn receives for his birthday from his uncle, he describes his home.
Winston also shares with us that from his parents he half heartedly accepted a trip to High Pines
for the summer. Winston was not like most boys, and instead of playing baseball and doing
things that most boys do, he read books. This bothered his brother Howard, which just
encouraged Winston to read more and more. His father and mother, both concerned, had multiple
talks with Winston but none of these talks resulted in anything. And here I am, sitting on a thin
and kind of smelly narrow mattress on my bunk in a cabin at High Pines (22). He went from the
comfort of his own bed to the smelly mattress of High Pines. The central conflict of the story
begins at the camp. This shift of setting allows the real story to begin. Later in the novel, the
setting shifts again. Some of the boys begin to venture off into the girls camp, or Low Pines. After
the revolution has begun, they take over the girl camp, also. If the girls camp was not involved,
two out of the three deaths would have been prevented. John Mason would not have died under the

Teaser: About four million Americans suffer from constipationare you one of them?
Article: The modern day toilet, while certainly convenient has one major flaw, it s built for sitting.
And while sitting to eliminate is considered civilized , there s another position that may improve
how you poop. And better elimination means less bloating, straining, hemorrhoids and constipation.
A little history behind sitting
What if I told you there was a more efficient way to poop? The bowel is the body s main
elimination organ, yet amongst many Americans today, this central elimination system is
compromised by something as simple as the position you choose to poop in. If you have less than
three bowel movements a week, then you may be one of the millions suffering from constipation.
So, before constipation gets the best of you, maybe it s time to go back to basics.
The first seated toilets ever built were used primarily for royalty and the disabled. However, after
the advent of indoor plumbing in the 1800s, the water closet was adapted with a porcelain throne to
fit the average home. That meant, common folk could now poop in a civilized manner just like the
queen. But prior to that, our ancestors were squatting

The research on the peer reviewed journal article were conducted by Etter and Birzer. The experts
collected their data information from Sedgwick County, Kansas Protection from Abuse court. The
main research questions that Etter and Birzer studied in the study were the demographic
characteristics of the abusers. The researchers want to know if anyone of the abusers have a

One thing they found, is that the study was a descriptive study limited to just violent offenders who
were served at the Protection from Abuse order in just one community. So the finding will have a
limitation in general. The other second limitation is that, there is limited information. The scholars
did not have enough information on the abuser is home life, like financial status or employment
situation. On the finally the limitation, the study was able to get only offenders who have been
caught by the criminal justice system and convicted for crime only. There are many changes in the
results because there are many people who are not trapped by criminal justice system and have
different characteristics. The main opinions that were given by Etter and Birzer, for future
research, is to examine if the female abusers were the actual aggressor or just a mutual combatant;
because of the high number of abusers who had past criminal records. Experts suggested, there
should be a better screening for batters and lastly the effectiveness of the protection abuse

Once More Of The Lake
Once More to the Lake is a short essay written by E.B. White for his column in the New Yorker,
One Man s Meat. Once More to the Lake is a story about a father who is taking his son to his
childhood vacation spot. On the trip, the father finds himself inside the memories of his past.
Throughout the trip, the father finds differences in the lake from when he was a child. While
much of E.B. White s essay is set in the present, the author explores his own mortality as he looks
both to the past and to the future. Elwyn Brooks White was born on July 11, 1899, in Mount
Vernon, New York, and died in 1985. Throughout his lifetime, White had traveled to many places
and held several jobs ranging from reporter to army private. He became a multifaceted writer but
primarily wrote style manual, fiction, poetry, and children s literature. Throughout his life, White
was surrounded by many other talented writers including Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, and
Stephen Leacock. White wrote the well known children s stories Stuart Littleand Charlotte s Web.
Many of White s works were accomplished with the help of his wife, former editor, Katharine
Angell. Once More to the Lake was published in 1941 along with many other works on which he
and Katharine had collaborated. The year 1941 was the onset of World War II in America. Other
countries had been at war for some time. In 1941, however, the war became increasingly eminent
for Americans. E.B. White did not slow down his writing during

Quotes For Lord Capulet
Essay Outline
The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees play at least 22 games a year just against each
other, not including playoffs. They are also the largest rival baseball team of all times. Romeo and
Juliet could be portrayed using the Capulets as Boston and the Montagues as New York. At one of
the games between them taking place in Fenway Park, Romeo and Juliet meet and hit it off right
away. Although their rivals, they do not realize who they are until after the game. In my favorite
scene, Act 4 Scene 2, Lord Capulet plays a very important part by talking to Juliet about the
wedding with Paris.
I think that Lord Capulet is the most needed character in this scene because it is all based on his
inner attitude. When Juliet begs for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After her speech, he goes straight to business face. If I directed a play of this, then I would direct
the person playing Lord Capulet to walk around and talk to himself about random things like
caterer, flowers, place, etc... and then start talking about his rewards because, as it says above, all
he cares about is what is in it for him.
Staging is just one element in the theater genre, but it is a very important one. If I had the chance
to direct Romeo and Juliet in the modernized version I created, then the lights for Act 4 Scene 2
would be bright, like fluorescent lights were everywhere. Even if Lord Capulet was not holding
a phone that lights up, we would need to signify that he is using one and what he is doing with
it. That would need it s own lighting. The camera angle if we ever filmed it would move from
place to place. I believe that it would start on Lord Capulet and then everyone else would answer
while he is on his phone. The camera when Juliet enters would be focused on her, maybe with
her running into the room where her father is. All of the actors need costumes to make the whole
scene come alive. Lord Capulet would be wearing a suit, black with a light blue undershirt and a
red tie would be added to this to make the audience believe that he had just come from work. The
suit will also show that even at home, Lord Capulet is all about the money.
Romeo and Juliet already has many modernized versions

The Consequence Of Events In An Earthquake
Questions I want to ask:
What is an earthquake?
The sequence of events in an earthquake.
What are the effects earthquakes have on land and people? What is an Earthquake?
An earthquake is when the ground violently shakes causing damage and harm to objects, people
and infrastructure around it. An earthquake occurs because our earth s crust is divided into big
sections called tectonic plates. The gaps separating different plates are called fault lines and plate
boundaries and this is where earthquakes are more likely to occur as well as existing plate fractures.
A convergent plate boundary often creates earthquakes. During the converging, two plates move
towards each other until they collide. When an oceanic plate and a continental plate collide with
each other they create a subduction zone. This is because the thinner, dense oceanic plate is over
ruled by the continental plate so it slides underneath and creates subduction. This means that a deep
sea trench appears near shore and a mountain range can begin to form due to the earth being pushed
backwards and building up.
An example of subduction between continental and oceanic crust.
When two oceanic plates collide a similar thing happens. The older plate will subduct to create a
trench of deeper water. The plate begins to melt as it lowers further into the higher temperature.
This leads to magma craters which can eventually find their way to surface and appear as a
volcanic cone. This plate boundary tends to ignite deeper

Western Civilization Essay Western Civilization: Beginnings to Present Although Western culture has been defined by both Christian and secular values across the course of time, the West s primary goal is to achieve economic supremacy, using Christian and secular philosophies, as well as colonization and technological innovation as means to achieve this goal. Of the features that define western culture, the most unique is democracy. Originating in ancient Athens, democracy created a sense of pride in one s government which, in later centuries, would evolve into nationalism. In Athens, democracy allowed the people to have a say in their government, furthering the unification of their empire and thus strengthening it. Out of this democratic world came many of the... As emperor Constantine saw that it would be more beneficial to stop persecuting the Christians and accept them to avoid another civil war, he became a Christian. This was only the start as Christianity spread throughout the European continent and Emperor Theodosius established it as the official religion of Rome in 380. This proved especially beneficial for the empire as it allowed Rome to be governed during its greatest extent. When Rome official fell in 476 to the barbaric tribes of the Germanic region, Christianity was the uniting factor as the chaos of local groups sought to hold power. Out of this developed a complex feudal system comprised of lords, vassals, and serfs along with the power and wealth of the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church demanded enormous amounts of money from the people as they sought redemption in times stricken with the Black Death and famine thus allowing the monasteries to emerge as the source of riches and the Church as the largest landholder in all of Europe. As the Church s power grew towards the first millennia, and had sucked the wealth from nearly all of its local citizens, they desired to find the holy land. Despite the first commandment of thou shall not murder and the Christian idea of turn the other cheek, the Crusades were some of the bloodiest battles in European history. Though he had many different discussions with many different people throughout his life, Socrates was never able to decide what he believed justice was. In one particular discussion with two of his comrades, Glaucon and Adeimantus , Socrates realized that studying an individual wouldn t help him learn the true meaning of justice. If he really wanted to understand justice, it might be easier to try to observe it in a large group rather than a single person. By observing what justice was in a community, there was a possibility that finding a justice in a single person would become much easier. Certain professions allow some people to earn more money than others in a society. Those with more wealth are able to by more luxuries and tend to become addicted to the luxurious lifestyle that they have earned. The rich start to become greedy, and want to be able to maintain their own wealth without doing much work, even if it means acting unjustly. Conversely, those who don t make as much money may struggle to keep themselves out of poverty. It is more difficult to provide food and shelter for themselves, which may lead to things like stealing and other unjust acts. This system of wealth and poverty create large amounts of injustice in societies around the world, but eliminating wealth and poverty won t make things any better. In order to completely eliminate wealth and poverty, you would need to eliminate the idea of money. If no one can earn more or less than others, no one can be wealthy or impoverished. But without money, injustice would be even more prominent than before. In the beginning of Republic Glaucon argues the following: Indeed every man believes that injustice is far more profitable to himself than justice ( Plato pg. 37). What I did not expect was to see a team of Emergency Medical Technicians struggling to get my father onto a stretcher down the stairs. It was the summer before my senior year of high school and my siblings usually stayed up late binging the latest addictive series on Netflix. But tonight was radically different from other late nights. Now at this moment I was paralyzed with fear and had no idea that the events that would unfold next would test my endurance in the most strenuous way. It was four in the morning and I was having difficulty processing what was unfolding even though it was already laid out before me. Once our ambulance arrived to the emergency room we were told that my father s heart beat was irregularly low and that several of his arteries were clogged. The Electrocardiogram showed that my father had a mild heart attack and was on his way to a more severe one, one that the doctors did not think he could come back from. His arteries had failed to receive, as well as export bloodfrom his heart and the doctors proceeded to try to place a stent in order to keep the paths clean. However, they continued to collapse and a stent was no longer an option. My father urgently needed a triple bypass, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. What Is Bradford s Use Of The Barbarians In Of Plymouth... When people of two different cultures meet, they often have unjustified negative perceptions each other. Such was the case of the Europeans and the Native Americans during the Age of Exploration. Native Americans would sometimes attack the settlers and look down upon them in disdain. In turn, the Europeans would fight back while also calling the natives savages. These hostile exchanges frequently occur because their leaders think too much about the differences between the groups that they forget the similarities in that they are all humans. Perceptions often change when those of different cultures put aside those differences and begin to cooperate with each other in a common goal. In fact, that is exactly what happened when William Bradford and his group of pilgrims came to Cape Cod. Initially, there was an... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When he first spotted the Native Americans after he had arrived, he noted that these savage barbarians, when they met with them (as after will appear) were readier to fill their sides full of arrows than otherwise (Bradford 8). In effect, his usage of the derogatory terms savage and barbarians demonstrates his disrespect for their culture. Not only does he describe the natives as savage once, but he also continues to use that term nearly five times. Bradford also uses many other words to characterize the natives negatively. For instance, he writes that ...the Indians came skulking about them, and would sometimes show themselves aloof off, but when any approached near them, they would run away... (16). Franco Zefferelli and Baz Luhrmann are the creators of the two most renowned film adaptations of William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet. Zefferelli, the more traditional director, created his Oscar winning version in 1968. Baz Luhrmann put an abstract, modern twist on Shakespeare s classic and created the 1996 version that raised millions of dollars in box office sales. Unable to contain his elation about what he has just heard, Romeo leaps from the darkness below the balcony, abruptly startling Juliet. The interaction between them is forbidden, so she turns towards the her room, ready to leave, until she is halted by Romeo s confession. If given the opportunity, he would choose to deny the Montague name so that he may share his life with her. Surprised, Juliet returns to where Romeo awaits her. During this scene, the soft light continually falls upon Juliet s angelic face, yet Romeo predominantly remains in the darkness, shadowed. This may reference the goodness of the Capulets and the supposed evilness of the Montagues from Juliet s standpoint. The camera is also pointed up during this scene when directed towards Juliet, yet pointed down when directed towards Romeo. Zefferelli may have used these camera angles to show that Juliet is considered someone Romeo admires although he is considered a lesser man by the Capulet family. The result of these heavy projectiles fired at such great velocity create not only a hole in the target, but in targets such as the human body create a wide area around the wound itself known as a temporary wound channel. This temporary wound channel is caused by hydrostatic shock. Hydrostatic shock can produce incapacitating effects much more quickly than blood loss alone. A shotgun firing buckshot, fires multiple projectiles that impact the body all at once and cause a shock overload to the system. This shock overload is very effective at incapacitating a human being. A shotgun firing slugs that are huge chunks of lead and so heavy they are weighted in ounces rather than grains has the double effect of a massive wound channel coupled a with shock overload. In contrast, bullets fired from a handgun must actually come into contact with the adversary s tissue or organs in order to disrupt them. This means that in order for bullets fired from a handgun to physically incapacitate the target we must hit something important, such as the spinal column, heart, brain or major blood vessels. In essence, we must be more accurate with a pistol then with a rifle and that is a mighty tall order. So, why do we carry the pistol? The second is in terms of manufacturers attempting to secure as many distribution outlet possibilities as possible, as the product has now lost its innovative appeal. In distribution terms they move from exclusive, then to selective and finally to intensive distribution. The philosophy of the latter is that maximum exposure at the point of sale is probably as important as brand awareness. o Promotion: During this phase promotion tends to change from one of creating awareness to one of attempting to create an identifiable brand. Promotional expenditure is probably still quite high. Competitors will know the perceived weaknesses of your product, so they can emphasize the strength of theirs. Although it might seem that being in the market first is a good policy, it is also a high risk policy. Unless the company is large enough to sustain a costly failure at this stage, or has other products to fall back upon, then such a policy is very high risk indeed. Maturity and saturation are dealt with together, because the maturity phase is the phase where the product s sales level off to a gradual peak over a longer period (often years or decades). The saturation phase is from its peak, gradually downwards to the phase where sales start to decelerate towards the decline phase. Totalitarianism with a group of leaders under the chief of command who, by the nature of society, are unavoidably the worst pick of the lot. This is due to needing a hive mind, which is most easily found among the lower intellectuals, as well as people who have no strong ideals and who are easily persuaded. This similar mindset, for this system to work, has to be accepted by the public as well. • 34. Effective Strength And Conditioning Program For An Injured... Despite an effective strength and conditioning program that helps prevent injuries, young athletes will still get hurt. When injuries do occur, a coach must know the proper treatment steps because he or she has a legal duty to provide immediate emergency care for an injured athlete. In this regard, the coach must administer the first aid or he or she must make sure a medical provider such as an athletic trainer provides the proper treatment. Furthermore, a coach must understand the subsequent rehabilitation involved that will successfully return the injured athlete to full participation. Because anklesprains are the most common basketball injury, this chapter will discuss the treatment plan considerations. The initial objective with an ankle sprain is to control swelling that includes protection, rest, ice, compression, and evaluation (P.R.I.C.E) treatment. The P.R.I.C.E treatment plan involves 1) protecting the ankle with braces, wraps, or crutches, 2) resting the ankle by not doing activities that cause pain, 3) icing the ankle for 20 minutes and off for 60 minutes throughout the first 48 hours after the injury, compressing the ankle with a wrap, 4) elevating the ankle at or above the heart. After the initial treatment, there are three primary modalities available to treat an ankle injury: surgery, conservative treat with cast immobilization, and functional treatment. Studies have found functional treatment as the best modality to treat Grade 1 and 2 ankle injuries ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Coso Range Shamanism The Coso Mountain Range is located at the intersection of the Great Basin and California culture area just above the eastern California desert. This region was left with arroyo walls, lava flows and pyroclastic boulders covered with petroglyphs of zoomorphic and anthropomorphic images (127). Petroglyphs are images created by carving, pecking or incising images into rock surfaces. The most common rock art element found in the Coso Range is that of bighorn sheep (129). Although bighorn sheep images were common in other parts of the Great Basin and the Southwest, these elements were seen in far greater quantities in the Coso Range. The bighorn sheep image represents more than half of the 100,000 rock art elements discovered in this region. Many... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This model suggest that bighorn sheep represent mythical spirit helpers that were in the center of shamanistic activities, including hallucinations and trances. Since bighorn sheep held a minimal role in the diet during the late Haiwee and early Marana Period, rituals performed resulted in images of bighorn sheep being carved to attract rain to the Coso Range as a means to increase productivity of plants. It was said that Numic men would enter a dream states or drug induced trances during rain rituals. The mental imprints obtained during these experiences were transcribed as rock art images. These images were thought to portray transformation of men into spirit helpers or bighorn sheep. These half anthropomorphic, half zoomorphic figures recorded were featured as evidence, however, problems arose with this model. For instance, this model required the rock art to have been created post 1000BP, since the model proposes that Numic groups from the Great Basin were the ones that brought these rituals. However, the Numic Expansion did not occur until 1000BP and bighorn sheep petroglyphs seem to have developed in the Coso Range prior to the Numic Expansion. Also, the hallucinogens that produce the particular sequence that some have argued these images capture were not available in prehistoric North America. In addition, the ethnographic footing of this model is challenged since no ethnographic connection has been proposed between the native people and the pecked images of bighorn sheep for rain making. Some ethnographic accounts connect shamanism with the Coso region, weather control as a shamanic activity, rain shamans with bighorn spirit helpers and rock art with shamans, but no particular ethnographic evidence has been made to connect all concepts. Heather Ongley Lorena Quintero Amanda Winter Darren Robinson CJA/334 Philip Russo September 17, 2012 Introduction Before understanding the research to be conducted, one must understand the who, what, when, and why of the issue. Many people know and understand that with a better education they will have a better chance in succeeding in the business world. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Bureau of Justice Statistics (2012), Recidivism is measured by criminal acts that resulted in the rearrests, reconviction, or return to prison with or without a new sentence during a three year period following the prisoner s release (Recidivism, par. 1). If the hypothesis is confirmed the theory will suggest that the lower the education level of an individual, the more apt that individual is to having a hard time finding work. If an individual, who has been to prison or jail, gets released into society with a low education level they will have a hard time finding a job. If this individual cannot find a job they will most likely turn to crime to get money to support themselves or their families, thus proving that the lower the education rate the higher the recidivism rate is. If the hypothesis is not confirmed it will suggest that there is no connection between education levels and recidivism rates back into jail or prison. If not proved the hypothesis will also show that individuals released back into society turn back to crime for other reasons and not anything to do with their education levels, thus proving that education levels have no effect on recidivism rates. Background/Literature review Recidivism is the result of a former prisoner relapsing into criminal activity and returning to prison for a new offense. The brains of addicted people have been modified by the drug in such a way that absence of the drug makes a signal to their brain that is equivalent to the signal of when you are starving , says National Institute of Drug Abuse Director Dr. Nora Volkow. It is as if the individual was in a state of deprivation, where taking the drug is indispensable for survival. It s as powerful as that. Addiction grows more serious over time. Substance use disorders travel along a continuum. This progression can be measured by the amount, frequency, and context of a person s substance use. As their illness deepens, addicted people need more alcohol or other drugs; they may use more often, and use in situations they never imagined when they first began to drink or take drugs. The illness becomes harder to treat and the related health problems, such as organ disease, become worse. This is not something that develops overnight for any individual, says addiction expert Dr. Kathleen Brady. Generally there s a series of steps that individuals go through from experimentation and occasional use [to] the actual loss of control of use. And it really is that process that defines addiction. The blues, a genre of music so well known and so universal, that one knows is associated with black culture; and forever connected to it. However, some may argue that not anyone can play the blues and blues is only black music. That being said, does it matter what the skin color of an individual may be to play the blues? In contrast I strongly believe anyone can play the blues because music is the purest form of creativity and communication. The reality is that today it is seen it all over, countless of people from many parts of the globe perform this genre of music known as The Blues. It is played by the millions and by many different races some of which are not from the south; but is it wrong for them to play it? Certain individuals may believe that playing the blues, one has to be black to even be considered. There is an individual who argues that one needs to really have The Blues to play them and it is only black music. (Harris, 2015 n.p) On the other hand I would consider that the culture or race of the performer does not matter. People from all races and backgrounds experience the blues, this genre of music has become universal; it is a part of world music now. it is wonderful to think that a genre of music once viewed as wrong or barbaric has become so well popularized and loved. This presented many challenges; how would the U.S. truly get out of the great depression? How would the country amply provide a work force in a world where males dominated the labor industry, the same males that would go off to fight the war? To answer these questions, we must look at several sources such as Roosevelt s famous fireside chats, how the U.S. population at home aided the war effort and the role of minorities. The final infrared spectrum is then presented to the user for interpretation. A background spectrum must also be measured with no sample in the beam. This can be compared to the measurement with the sample in the beam to determine the percent transmittance. This technique results in a spectrum which has all of the instrumental characteristics removed [195]. Some of the major advantages of FT IR over the dispersive technique include: Speed: Because all of the frequencies are measured simultaneously, most measurements by FT IR are made in a matter of seconds rather than several minutes. This is referred to as the Felgett Advantage. Sensitivity: The detectors employed are much more sensitive. The optical throughput is much higher (referred to as the Jacquinot Advantage) results in lower noise levels and the fast scans. • 52. The Consequence Of Events In An Earthquake Questions I want to ask: What is an earthquake? The sequence of events in an earthquake. What are the effects earthquakes have on land and people? What is an Earthquake? An earthquake is when the ground violently shakes causing damage and harm to objects, people and infrastructure around it. An earthquake occurs because our earth s crust is divided into big sections called tectonic plates. The gaps separating different plates are called fault lines and plate boundaries and this is where earthquakes are more likely to occur as well as existing plate fractures. A convergent plate boundary often creates earthquakes. During the converging, two plates move towards each other until they collide. When an oceanic plate and a continental plate collide with each other they create a subduction zone. This is because the thinner, dense oceanic plate is over ruled by the continental plate so it slides underneath and creates subduction. This means that a deep sea trench appears near shore and a mountain range can begin to form due to the earth being pushed backwards and building up. An example of subduction between continental and oceanic crust. When two oceanic plates collide a similar thing happens. The older plate will subduct to create a trench of deeper water. The plate begins to melt as it lowers further into the higher temperature. This leads to magma craters which can eventually find their way to surface and appear as a volcanic cone.
