North Dakota Pipeline Case Study
At Standing Rock Sioux Reservation multiple Native American tribes are protesting the
construction of the North Dakota Pipeline. The North Dakota Pipeline could be very beneficial for
moving oil in a safer and more cost effective manner, but it could also cause irreparable harm to the
environment and communities surrounding it. Even though there are benefits to the construction
of the pipeline, it would cause more destruction than being a system improvement.
The approximate 1,172 mile, 30 inch diameter, would connect Bakken and Three Forks production
areas in North Dakota to Patoka, Illinois. The pipeline would allow oil to be moved in a More
profitable and environmentally safer manner. Yet, any leak would cause immediate and irreplaceable

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Scramble For Africa
In the 1880s the scramble for Africa began. The scramble for Africa was when European countries
occupied, colonized, and divided Africa during the period of new imperialism. In the beginning
imperialism in Africa seemed beneficial but then opinions changes. As imperialism spread many
began to view imperialism differently than before, while some saw only the benefits of imperialism
other saw the disastrous aftermath. In the past imperialism in Africawas viewed as both beneficial
and harmful because of the disadvantages of imperialism, the benefits of imperialism, and the
effects that imperialism had on the Africans.
Although there were benefits of African imperialism, there were also disadvantages for the
nations. When writing about African imperialism a British scholar, J.A. Hobson, said that during
the period of imperialism there were many wars that were caused by Europeans attacking people
who they considered to be lower races (Document 1). The lower races were at a disadvantage
because the Africans did not have the same modern weaponry that the Europeans did, which was
one of the military causes of new imperialism. Another example is an excerpt from Balance Sheets
of Imperialism which points out that, In fact, her expenditures on colonies for that time was 6,856
million lire (Document 8). This is an example of a disadvantage because even though there was
money being made in the colonies, the countries still had to pay for things like live costs and wars

Big Boy s History And The 5c Framework
Introduction
Representatives from Northlich and Frisch s expressed that over the 40 year life of the Frisch s
Big Boy brand, Frisch s has neglected managing their marketing strategy and research. As a result,
Frisch s marketing style has remained relatively unchanged for decades. Frisch s seeks to attract
consumers in the millennial cohort. To implement the changes required to appeal to this new
market, Frisch s will benefit from understanding the following elements of the 5C framework:
company, climate, customers, collaborators, and competitors. This competitive analysis will
contextualize Frisch s Big Boy s history and the 5C Framework to gain an understanding of Frisch s
position and competencies in the chain restaurant industry.

Brand recognition is a powerful asset for these firms. To maintain recognition and manage cultural
shifts, franchises in the full service sector often make subtle changes to their logos over time.
These slight changes go unnoticed by the seasoned consumers, but appeal to emerging consumer
segments and modern perceptions (see Appendix A). Northlich s makeover initiatives for Frisch s
are valuable, positive changes to open the Frisch s aesthetic to new audiences (see Figure 1).
Unfortunately, these changes did not occur over an extended period of time and are immediately
visible for all consumers. These changes have faced opposition from older consumers as a result.
Frisch s traditional marketing strategies are not suited for millennial consumers because the
millennial market did not exist when the original marketing strategies were implemented. Changes,
like up dating the Big Boy mascot, are necessary to appeal to Frisch s target millennial market.
This industry is moderately regulated (Alvarez, 2016). The food industry as a whole, including full
service restaurants have been affected by the public and political discussions of GMO (genetically
modified organisms) food products. As millennial consumers become a larger, profitable consumer
group; their high value for healthy and authentic food options becomes are more significant driver

Community Service Statement
Community Service Statement: Briefly describe your extra curricular activities which demonstrate
community service, leadership, and/or volunteerism. Outline your contribution, the time
commitment required, and what you learned as a result of participating. I am a representative of
the Society of Calgary Undergraduate Math. As a representative, three to four hours per week, or
forty eight to sixty four hours per semester, are dedicated to office hours, where I am available to
anyone who has questions regarding club events and services, such as tutoring, which are offered
by the club. In addition, at the end of each semester, I lead the organization of one final exam
review session for a chosen entry level mathematics course, which requires meetings with both the
professor of the course and the chosen instructor who will lead the review. Overall, the review
sessions require two to three hours of preparation, including sitting outside of the review admitting
members and providing membership to new members. As a result of being part of the club, I have
learned a few very valuable lessons. First, I have acquired better communication skills when
conveying information to different audiences. Disseminating information on club events to students
requires a different tone than giving the information to a professor, and I have valued the
opportunity to become familiar with how professional and informal communications differ. In
addition, by working with other members during meetings, I

Macbeth Tragic Hero Research Paper
A tragic hero can be described as a character who starts as an individual of noble stature, who then
endures a downfall in fault of their flaws leading to self destruction. In Shakespeare s Macbeth,
the protagonist Macbeth can be given the title of a tragic hero. Macbeth is a man of greatness is
seen as a royal in Scotland. He is considered very courageous, honored, dignified holds a
recognized name. He fights well for the country and brings pride to those around him. Though
being a man of greatness, the personal flaws of Macbeth such as impatience, ambition and the
manipulation of others, makes him a tragic hero.
Macbeth was a valiant and recognized man and/or hero by many around him, especially those of
higher levels. Shakespeare s Macbeth opens with scene in which a bleeding captain, presumably of

Public Policy Of Globalization In Canada
Public Policy of Globalization in Canada
The government is what makes executive decisions for the public policy. Our living is depending
on living and working conditions which shape health. The social determinants of heath, shape

cultural factors are some components that influence health. The Canadian welfare state shapes

Although the health care system is constantly making improvements, industrialized countries fail to

issues that evolve the Canadian health care system. Social determinants expand on the availability

employment and health and social services being influenced by health. This chapter mainly
revolves around public policy based aspects like health inequalities and political economy
perspective. The policies the government makes revolves on the social determinants. Social
determinants are known as the living conditions, education, housing employment and food. These
designs guide the government in finding an effective solution. In conclusion, it shows that
economics, politics and social facts organize public policy in Canada and influence and shape
other countries around the world. Comprehensiveness in the Canadian health care insurance plan

Comprehensiveness is also known as the basket of services, because this act talks about service

Property, Plant, and Equipment
Property, plant, and equipment are stated at cost less accumulated depreciation and amortization.
Depreciation is computed using the straight line method over estimated useful lives of 10 to 40
years for buildings, 3 to 10 years for machinery and equipment, and 10 to 20 years, not to exceed
the lease term, for leasehold improvements. Tools, dies, and molds are amortized using the straight
line method over 3 years. Estimated useful lives are periodically reviewed and, where appropriate,
changes are made prospectively. The carrying value of property, plant, and equipment is reviewed
when events or changes in circumstances indicate that the carrying value of an asset may not be

In the 2010 fourth quarter, we decided to pursue the disposition of a land parcel. In accordance with
the guidance for the impairment of long lived assets, we evaluated the property for recovery and
subsequently in 2010 we recorded an impairment charge of $14 million to adjust the carrying value
of the property to our estimate of fair value. We estimated that fair value using an income approach
reflecting internally developed Level 3 cash flows that included, among other things, our
expectations about the eventual disposition of the property based on discussions with potential
third party purchasers. The impairment charge impacted the general, administrative, and other
expense line in our Income Statement, and we allocated that charge to our North American Limited

Calvinist vs Anti-Calvinist in Dr.Faustus
The Calvinist/anti Calvinist controversy
The theological implications of Doctor Faustus have been the subject of considerable debate
throughout the last century. Among the most complicated points of contention is whether the play
supports or challenges the Calvinist doctrine of absolute predestination, which dominated the
lectures and writings of many English scholars in the latter half of the sixteenth century.
According to Calvin, predestination meant that God, acting of his own free will, elects some
people to be saved and others to be damned thus, the individual has no control over his own
ultimate fate. This doctrine was the source of great controversy because it was seen by the so
called anti Calvinists to limit man s free will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the greatest critics of Calvinism in Marlowe s day was Peter Baro, who argued that such
teachings fostered despair among believers, rather than repentance among sinners. He claimed, in
fact, that Calvinism created a theodical dilemma:
What shall we say then? That this question so long debated of the Philosophers, most wise men,
and yet undetermined, cannot even of Divines, and men endued with heavenly wisdom, be
discussed and decided? And that God hath in this case laid a crosse upon learned men, wherein they
might perpetually torment themselves? I cannot so think.[27]
Baro recognised the threat of despair which faced the Protestant church if it did not come to an
agreement of how to understand the fundamentals. For him, the Calvinists were overcomplicating
the issues of faith and repentance, and thereby causing great and unnecessary confusion among
struggling believers. Faustus himself confesses a similar sentiment regarding predestination:
The reward of sin is death. That s hard.
... If we say that we have no sin,
We deceive ourselves, and there s no truth in us.
Why then belike we must sin,
And so consequently die.
Ay, we must die an everlasting death.

The Assassination Of President John F. Kennedy
Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. JFK was
a man defined by his morality, however his appeasing methods were perceived by some as a
weakness, ultimately preluding his inescapable death. It is to a highly significant extent that the
CIA was responsible for the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, as contrasting ideologies,
acting as motive, integrated with extensive influence and power, enabled the CIA to eliminate JFK,
to infiltrate their own desired means of governing. as an impediment of desired governing.
Uncertainty of motives, corresponding with former connections to the CIA, generated hesitation for
the solitary conviction of Lee Harvey Oswald. Complications concerning domestic and international
incidents instigated tensions between the CIA and President Kennedy, later acting as an apparent
motive cause for his assassination. Discrepancies regarding eye witness statements, forensic and
photographic evidence emerged with the final report issued by the Warren Commission; this
resulted in concern and uncertainty as to the quality of investigation into the President s death,
highlighting the occurrence of foul play by the CIA.
The CIA had a very significant role in the assassination of JFK, as, despite undisputed evidence
indicating Lee Harvey Oswald s involvement, it is evident he was exploited in a larger, more
elaborate scheme. Lee Harvey Oswald was undeniably a patsy for the CIA, acting as a significant

The, By Frederick Schauer s Paper, Was Austin Right After...
Frederick Schauer s paper, Was Austin Right After All? On the Role of Sanctions in a Theory of
Law, has two central claims. First, the fact that law is primarily coercive (with the use of
sanctions to ensure compliance) has been vastly overlooked in the wake of H.L.A Hart s critique
of John Austin s work on legal positivism. Second, those who aim to study the philosophical nature
of law would be better to examine what makes law truly important and distinctive rather than the
necessary and mandatory features of law. In this paper, I will begin by describing Austin s account
of the nature of law. Then, I will explore Hart s criticisms of Austin s account that Schauer objects
to before delving into Schauer s argument. To conclude, I will... Show more content on

He follows the rules because he sees them as a reason to modify his behaviour. The external
point of view, however, describes a member of a group that merely observes rules and is only
concerned with avoiding potential sanctions in the case of non compliance. In his critique of
Austin s work, Hart believes that in making coercion and sanction a central component of the
nature of law, Austin imagines a world filled with bad men , a term introduced by Oliver
Wendell Holmes to describe a person who is more concerned with avoiding the adverse
consequences of disobedience of the law (or using Hart s terminology, a person taking an
external point of view). However, Austin overlooks the fact that most people in a society could
be considered puzzled men , which describes a person who is prepared to comply with the law,
as long as they are told what they have to do (or again using Hart s terminology, a person taking
an internal point of view). Therefore, Hart maintains that Austin s account of the nature of law
overlooks the fact that most people take an internal point of view towards the rules. The majority
of people do not take into account the sanctions that may befall them if they do not comply; they
simply comply because they see the law as a reason to modify their behaviour. Hart s critique of
Austin boils down to determining the normativity of law (the reason why we should

The Development of Harmony from Schumann through Brahms to...
The Development of Harmony from Schumann through Brahms to Debussy
In studying three composers, Schumann, Brahms and Debussy, it is possible through analysis, to
construct a Harmonic development through time from early 1800 s to early 1900 s. I will go about
deducing a harmonic timeline by individually looking at each composer then will conclude with a
final comparison summarizing how different harmonic elements develop with the Romantic
Movement and its progression.
The harmonic journey will start with Schumann s Kinderszenen, or Scenes from Childhood. This is
a set of thirteen reminiscences of childhood, written during a temporary separation from Clara.
They are works about children, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bar 13 (and 14) also consists of a repeated perfect cadence in C major over a C pedal in the bass.
The use of pedal here is later magnified in many of Brahms pieces, particularly in Rhapsody No.2.
In Schumann s Frightening , in bar 21, the C major chord is followed by a tritonal harmonic leap
onto a sforzando dominant seventh chord of F sharp major at beat 2. This chord, together with a
rising chromatic line heralds the return of the tonic key. Schumann has reinterpreted the chord of C
major as the Neapolitan chord (the flattened second) of b minor (the tonic), making the surprising
tritonal leap more logical than it initially seems. The original motivic material is presented exactly
as it occurred in bars 1 4 to provide an aesthetic harmonic balance to the piece. Textually, Schumann
s harmony strikingly contrasts the other pieces, for instance, there are often offbeat semiquavers in
the right hand creating a busier/more contrapuntal texture
The next harmonic platform is in the study of Brahms devices and techniques in harmony and
texture. It is important to note that Brahms, in particular, led the strongest resistance to the more
extreme tendencies of musical Romanticism in general (as epitomised by Wagner s music) and I feel
this comes across in his use of harmony. Through his diligent study and

Throughout Latin American History there have been several important leaders, but one leader in

century leader was named SimГіn BolГvar. SimГіn BolГvar as a leader stood out from all the other

an intellectual, and a visionary man that made Latin American independence successful during the

Latin America, in that SimГіn used these ideas he was taught to influence the people of his country.
Without SimГіn BolГvar s avocation of these enlightment ideas to the people of Latin America,
independence for these states may not have been possible. Since SimГіn BolГvar could be seen as
responsible of the one advocating how important it is for citizens to fight for their rights and
freedoms, and these ideas where the reason that ignited the movement towards independence.
During the nineteenth century, many people needed some kind of guidance about how they should
act and think in regards to being inferior to Spanish rule that had a hold on their country like Latin
America experienced throughout Spanish colonial rule. SimГіn BolГvar and his enlightment ideas
were just what the citizens needed in leading them towards independence, since it seemed like they
were lost without his guidance. Perhaps SimГіn BolГvar was just the right intellectual at the right
time, since it seemed that people during this time needed someone to guide or speak for them, and
that they ultimately couldn t think or act for themselves so SimГіn guided them. It was said that
SimГіn BolГvar was considered an intellectual and that people followed his ideas and visions

Then, slowly my focus turned to different types of advertising, and then on to children s

their run had around 250 participants, and they raised about $7,000 for a local foundation. They
set up their event so each runner had a wristband, and they sent the runners in different waves

Paul Fussell At War Summary
What I believe to be the most important historical inaccuracy to bring to light in Fussell s book is
in relation to his use of statistics about British casualties. Fussell writes, even in the quietest times,
some 7000 British men and officers were killed and wounded daily. As Robin Prior and Trevor
Wilson point out in their article Paul Fussell at War, points out that if Fussell s statement about
7000 British men and officers being killed and wounded daily were true then over the course of the
war there would be ten million British casualties. As the article goes on to explain, only five million
men fought for the British army throughout the entire war, therefore Fussell s initial statistic cannot
be true. For the average reader this inaccuracy... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Leonard V. Smith explains in his article Paul Fussell s The Great War and Modern Memory:
Twenty Five Years Later, the most important long term effect of the book was the role it played in
convincing historians that the narrative of a historical event mattered, not only in literature, but
also in history. Without this recognition from historians, the retelling of historical events could have
stayed on the same track of factual based information without providing a narrative, therefore
causing a separation from the reader and the event because of a lack of connection. Therefore,
despite its flaws, The Great War and Modern Memory contributes positively to history

Boy In The Striped Pajamas

alive by recounting it history through a tale. The story focuses on a family who lives right next to

With the majority of tumours being slow growing it has been established from various studies that
biennial screening is the most effective time frame. This is due to the identification of slow
growing tumours at an early enough stage for recovery and at the same time ensures a reduced rate
of false positives compared to annual mammograms.5 In addition, since the proportion of DCIS is
highest in younger women, screen detection of DCIS that may not be clinically significant could
be considered a further harm. 5 Therefore it is the woman s prerogative whether the risk of cancer
outweighs the possibility of coming into contact with the aforementioned harms.
With the implementation of mammograms as a population based screening program the targeted
population must be scrutinised, because although it is common practice for women over 40 to be
covered by health insurance for mammograms there are increasing numbers of women below that
age with breast cancer.

Arthur Leander s Station Eleven
The nature of one s history has an inevitable effect on their future. In many cases, the forthcoming
situations that one faces are based on recollections of the past and their interpretation of it. Within
the novel, Station Eleven, author Emily St. John Mandel develops a plethora of characters whose
pastactions and memories have a considerable effect on their future. This is exemplified through the
impact that Arthur s turmoil lifestyle has on him as he ages, Tyler s development of radicalistic
beliefs due to his exposure towards profound ideology from a very young age, along with
Kirsten s change in perspective and formation of interests due to prior actions and memories.
Throughout his acting career, Arthur Leander s dramatic lifestyle as well as series of
tumultuous events impact him greatly. As decades go by, Arthur s previous affairs reshape his
mentality for the future. His fame results in a substantial lack of privacy, and after years of
encountering such exposure to the public, his sole desire is to be left in peace. Despite this,
during the opening years of his acting career, Arthur is desperate for his first glimpse of fame and
wants to be famous (St. John Mandel, 110). As his career progresses, this desire begins to vanish
due to his loss of personal privacy; largely due to the media. Arthur... Show more content on

John Mandel integrates numerous characters into the book whose previous actions have an
immense effect on their future. This can be displayed within Arthur s changing attitude towards
the media as he ages, Tyler s exposure to radicalistic religious beliefs and the role it plays within
his life, as well as Kirsten s personal struggles over previous acts of violence and interactions with
others. One s history and their perception of such events will pave a path ahead of them. The

What Are The Similarities Between Cubism And Futurism
Introduction
The early Twentieth Century faced a series of movements that made an impact during that period.
Two of these major movements are Cubism and Futurism, which contrast in their origins,
philosophies, and method of creating art, their distinguishing characteristics, and method of relating
the subject and viewer in time and space, as well as the artists involved and their unique artworks.
By comparing both Movements, I will be able to distinguish the difference as well as the similarities
between these movements and the impact they have in modern art.
Cubism
Which was an Early Twentieth Century Style and Movement in art, used more in paintings, which
focussed more on the usage of geometric shapes, interlocking planes, and later at some point there
was a usage of making a collage, was used or originated in Europe and then was later used in
France. It was very influential as it was sought to have brought about diversity within art in that era.
Futurism
Futurism is an artistic Movement which focussed more on modern technology, rather than
traditional form. It is an Early Twentieth Century Movement that took place or originated in Italy.
Origins
In the early 19th Century, a great artist designed a painting which brought about the start of a new
movement in France. Les Demoiselles D Avignon (Fig. 1.1) is a painting by... Show more content

Was Marie Antoinette a Cause of the French Revolution or...
Marie Antoinette was the Archduchess of Austria, and became Dauphine of France after several
years. Many French citizens dislike her because of her behaviors. Some citizens blamed on her
that she was one of the reason to cause the French Revolution. Some of the people said that she
was not a serious problem for forming the French Revolution. There were also some people said
that those behaviors were came from Louis XVI or influenced to Marie Antoinette, and actually he
was one of the reason that caused the French Revolution. So what is the truth as one of the cause
of French Revolution? Was she really a cause of the French Revolution? Marie Antoinette was born

Even though she was going to become a queen in a palace, but she doesn t like her life, because her
husband ignored her and they didn t have children for some years, so they lived separately. Since
she had no child to take care, she had to find some entertainments for herself. She spent lot of
money on her banquets, parties, fashion clothing, jewelry, gambling, and other entertainments. All
of these spending causes a lot of disadvantages to the country, and these money were from the
government; the taxes from the citizens. She kept wasting a lot of money that were not actually her
money. In this case, we can know that she did not played her role well as the queen of the France.
She spent time and money on her entertainment instead of doing her duties. During that time, the
economy of France was very poor, Marie Antoinette wore his lady fashion cloth and ate meals in
front of public. Her life after married to Louis XVI became very luxurious, because the only thing
she knew was spending money in her entertainments. Both of them spent money from government
on their entertainments. They made the economy even worse when they wasted money. Instead of
ruling the country, Louis XVI chose to spend money and have fun on his entertainment. When the
citizens had no money to pay for their taxes, they were spending the money on their entertainment.
After a few years, they manage to have children. Marie Antoinette wanted the French people to

Jazz Music And The Musicians Essay
Jazz music and the musicians played a pivotal role in World War II. During the war there were a
lot of patriotic songs, as well as songs about military life, humor, and religion written in the Jazz
genre. There were also numerous artists that went overseas to perform. One of these artists was
Glen Miller, who raised soldiers morale by modernizing the army band. Jazzwas also used as a type
of weapon in the war. During the war there were a lot of patriotic songs, as well as songs about
militarylife, humor, and religion written in the jazz genre. A few patriotic songs are The House I
Live In (That s America To Me), There s A Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere, America
Patrol, and This IS Worth Fighting For. One Patriotic song written by Iviring Berlin has an
unusual history. It was originally written for a military show in 1918, but was put aside when
they decided that they did not want to use it for the show. It was later pulled out of storage in
1939 by Kate Smith. Kate s version of the song became the standard version that was used by
everyone. Another one of Iviring Berlin s songs that was written for the military show but never
used was This Is The Army, Mister Jones. This song was resurrected for a different military show
called This Is The Army. This song turned out to be a Broadway hit as well as being
independently popular. The show traveled where it earned two million dollars for the Army

The Tragedy Of The Mist By Michael Apted
The Tragedy That is Gorillas in the Mist Entertainment media, such as television and literature, have
often used the archetypal plot tragedy. Tragedy is a plot in which greatness can be crushed and
goodness, in turn, defeated. Often, a tragedy presents the challenges of adulthood, rather than a
romanticized version of life, proclaiming beauty and youth. In a tragedy, a hero accepts a call to
action to go on a journey, and, along the way, fate thwarts their efforts, and they perish or are
defeated. Afterwards, the audience experience a feeling of catharsis, or the releasing of a strong
emotion (such as pity or fear) (Merriam Webster). Director Michael Apted s Golden Globes
winning movie, Gorillas in the Mist, closely followed the plot of a tragedy. Apted uses archetypal
characters, symbols, and pathos to portray a tragedy. Using archetypal characters, such as Dian
Fossey, Bob Campbell, and the Batwa, Apted depicts a tragic plot in Gorillas in the Mist. Dian
Fossey travels to the mountains of Central Africa in order to protect the mountain gorillas whose
population was rapidly succumbing to poaching in the area. In order to save their lives, Fossey
gives up personal relationships, and devotes all of her attention to the gorillas. In Apted s film,
Fossey represents the tragic hero; she takes a call to action to save the mountain gorillas, and is
thwarted by efforts from locals in the area, and is eventually murdered for her efforts to protect
them. Although her

Why Is Hector Unpredictable Louis Sachar
Hector (Zero) Hector Zeroni is unpredictable at the start, the middle, and the end of the story. In
Louis Sachar s adventure fiction Holes Hector Zeroni is the most unpredictable person in the
story. The first reason why we think Hector is unpredictable is because he never spoke to anyone
except for Stanley. The second reason Hector is unpredictable is because lot of the people were
surprised whenever Hector did something a little different than how he acts. The third reason
Hector was unpredictable is because no one paid too much attention (except for Stanley) might
have caused him to do things that he normally wouldn t do. The First reason why we think Hector

The Lion King ( Film )
The Lion King (FILM)
This Disney animated film follows the adventures of the young lion Simba, the heir of his father,
Mufasa. Simba s wicked uncle, Scar plots to usurp Mufasa s throne by luring father and son into a
stampede of wildebeests. But Simba escapes, and only Mufasa is killed. Simba returns as an adult
to take back his homeland from Scar with the help of his friends Timon and Pumbaa.
The first theme in the film the The Lion King would have to be manipulation. Although this theme
may just be linked to Scar, I will mention it because he is a main character. A second example of
manipulation would have to be when Scar says I will be king. Stick with me, and you ll never
go hungry again! This quote is clear evidence that manipulation is a key theme because Scar
constantly manipulates a lot of people. This quote also shows us that Scar manipulates the
hyenas because he says you ll never go hungry , when in actual fact they do. Scar just
manipulates the hyenas because he wants them to become his soldiers for him. Another
example of manipulation would have to be when Scar says Now, you wait here. Your father has
a marvelous surprise for you. This quote shows that Scar manipulates Simba because he wants to
become king of Pride rock. These quotes also show that the purpose of Scar s manipulation is
due to greed. An example of manipulation is when Scar says But the king is dead. And if it weren

Examples Of Human Development In Paleolithic Culture
Some examples of human cultural development in the Paleolithic Culture would be that the
humans gradually evolved from early members of the genus homo habilis. Since then they had
evolved from those to hominid humans. Another example of human cultural development was
the tools that were made from 4.4 billion to 1.6 million years ago. The tools that they would
usually use were pebble tools, hand axes, and choppers. From 1 million to 25,000 years ago, the
tools were changed, the tools were made to become flake tools as it was called.
Some other examples of human cultural in the Paleolithic culture was in the Ice Age era was that
they discovered fire, they buried their dead, made cave paintings, sewing, and made spears. They

Essay about Deserting Washington’s Army
Deserting Washington s Army
With the Revolutionary War set to begin, the recruitment of soldiers was fully on. Reasons to
enlist in the Continental Army were quite candid for numerous individuals. Motives ranged from
looking for a fresh start to wanting to honor friendship/family, or even for the sole purpose of
securing regular pay. Many looked to reap the benefits that were promised to them for enlisting in
the army. As the Revolutionary War waged on for years to come, soldiers of the Continental Army
continued to battle, not only the British, but the many hardships that came their way, as well. By
1780 the number of soldiers abandoning their posts/camps had greatly increased due the number of
hardships they encountered. Even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A recruiting hand bill by George Washingtonhimself even stated that those who enlisted in the
Continental Army would receive a bounty of Twelve dollars...and sixty dollars a year in GOLD,
as well as handsome clothing and a large ration of provisions. With every advertisement similar to
this one, in which enlistment is claimed to be accompanied with incentives (usually money or
land), empty promises were soon to follow. This was a strong driving force that led men to desert
their posts because most soldiers were not getting paid what they had been promised. James
Kirby Martin even alludes, in his book Ordinary Courage, to the fact that 100 acre was promised
to veterans, but that land never materialized for most of them. He addresses this in context
stating, The truth was, none cared for them; the country was served, and faithfully served, and
that was that was deemed necessary. It was, soldiers, look to yourselves; we want no more of
you. I hope I shall one day find land enough to lay my bones in. If I chance to die in a civilized
country, none will deny me that. A dead body never begs a grave; thanks for that. Especially with
monetary inflation being high during the time of the war, many soldiers deserted the army in
order to provide for their families back home. The buying power of the new Continental dollar
falls 90% and a number of food riots breakout due to the extreme prices. The lack of financial

The Death Of The Boy
Once, a very long time ago, a boy lived happily with his mother. The boy was chubby and small;
he had very dark hair and extremely large glasses; he seemed to be a flibbertigibbet, an oddball
child with a very introverted outlook on life along with knowledge beyond his years. He and his
mother were but simple Dysart folk that brought no harm to anyone, but harm unfortunately came
their way in the form of the mother becoming very ill with a stroke. This caused a great deal of
difficulty for the boy as his persistently inebriated older brother, Stephen, whom he hoped he would

strong Geordie accent, You think we d av books on that crap in ere? Hmm... you know what, take

The boy nodded and then walked briskly, yet silently, towards the Religious section of the

desk in front of the receptionist; the dust covering the book flew up and surrounded the boy and
the receptionist in a fog whilst the sound reverberated around the whole library causing a

down at the floor.

Essay 3 Second Draft
A Review of Searching for Sugar Man The film Searching for Sugar Man focuses on a legend folk
music star, Sixto Rudriguez, who is more popular than Elvis in South Africa but fails to gain fame
in the United States. He knows nothing about his fame in South Africa and has no idea how he is
deified there. The whole story is told in a linear way to present a dramatic journey of finding
Rudriguez. It is not followed an old fashioned rough start road to success dream come true style
(Ning). It is a display of two parallel worlds of a legend music hermit. An artist who regards art
as his ultimate faith in life remains unmoved either by gain or loss. In describing music journey of
Rudriguez, the director shoots several full length shots of Rudriguez s wandering. The first
wandering shot appears at the sixth minute, where a lonely figure wanders passing by slums, CD
shops, the sewer club and Detroit steel factory. He was just a wandering spirit around the city (
Searching for Sugar Man ). This shot indicates several elements of that time, including working
class, minority nation, and large company. The solitude night of Detroit and the decaying
atmosphere of this city are perfectly matched, which coordinates with Rudriguez s music as
background melody. A modest man of modest means, he quietly reflects on the success he now
enjoys a continent away from his Detroit home and the hard times in

A lethal duel between Major von Crampas and Baron von Instetten had taken place in the

wife s sewing table. WГјllersdorf, a lawyer and friend to the Baron, was immediately summoned to

Being considered a coward is the true insults to male honour that men including Innstetten felt if
he did not provoke a duel. Likewise, the challenged party such as Crampas would feel equally
obliged to accept the duel; otherwise he would infinitely suffer the criticism from the larger society
(Frevent 176). The Baron was quick to notify WГјllersdorf with a note regarding the affair, which

Case Study On Intellectual Property
Based on Zizi s case study, there are some legal issues on intellectual property and the legal
methods that Zizi have to understand so that he may employ to protect his business property.
The purpose of intellectual property is to encourage creativity as well as to ensure reimbursement
for the labour of individuals. There are different type of intellectual property such as patent,
trademark, and copyright.
Patent is concerned about how it works rather than focus on the abstract ideas. In other words, it
focus on the process or method of making of a work or invention. On the other hand, trademark is
a symbol or sign which form by letter or number. It used to indicate a particular product or services.

According to the law of breach of confidence in the context of intellectual property is meant to
protect secrets and confidential. In addition, the law of confidence often acts complementary to
copyright law as well as the patent law. According to the case study of Zizi, when Zizi narrates the
idea for a software program to the Ben, the programmer. The latter would be under an obligation
not to exploit the idea without the permission of Zizi. Therefore, if Andrew uses the idea of Zizi
without permission, Andrew has infringe the breach of confidence.
On the other hand, fiduciary relationship such as partnership and trusts have been held to be
relevant in determining a duty of confidence. For example the case of Morison v Moat (1851).
Therefore, if Zizi found that his partner has break the duty of confidence. Zizi can take action about
it.
Employment contracts usually have express terms imposing an obligation of confidence. All
employee will be under the obligation to protect trade secrets, even if this is not an express term in

with social media s like Instagram, snapchat, Facebook, etc. They cannot be communicated or in
other words, accepted by their peers if they do not use internet quite often. In doing so, internet
addiction definitely makes a difference in terms of social media use. Addictive use of the Internet
may be vary and it has impacts on several aspects such as online affairs, student internet abuse, and
employee internet abuse. Online chat rooms and other social medias might impact individuals in
ways such as marriages, health conditions, and personalities. New areas of research identify users
who became hooked on online chat rooms, instant messaging, interactive games, and even eBay
only to see their lives become increasingly unmanageable because of the Internet (e.g., Morahan
Martin, 1997; Scherer, 1997; Young, 1996). Moreover, information on the Internet is too
disorganized and unrelated to school curriculum to help students and can even serve as a

Mormon Cult Research Paper
The Mormon Cult
They all wear weird under garments. They are racist. They practice polygamy. They are a cult.
Women are discriminated against.
These are some of the controversies I have picked up on throughout my life when those who did not
practice the religion brought up Mormons. I ve had two insights into the Mormon religion; one
being my trip to the Kansas City temple and another being family friend s with one some might
call a hard core Mormon . After many years of these assumptions I finally acted on my curiosity
when I was granted the opportunity after a friend invited me to join them for their service. On
impulse, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and take a look into this foreign religion.
After my invitation, I waited ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I could feel everyone s eyes on mine but directed my attention to Brother Johnston, hoping he
wouldn t take my random outburst negatively.
That s actually not true in today s world, he replied kindly. He went on to explain that those who
would practice polygamy would become excommunicated. According to scriptures, the Lord had
commanded some to do so for various reasons (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David, and
Solomon) and they believe that in Heaven polygamy is practiced.
Anything else you d like to ask? He went on to say. Well yes, I have twenty million other questions
I d like answers to.
This is going to sound really weird, but do you guys all wear the same underwear every day? He
burst out laughing at my question and looked at the other girls who were laughing under their
breaths as well. In that moment I hated myself for being so curious, and quickly said Never mind!
No its ok, he replied, Our church is very big on modesty. After a couple is sealed (married) in the
temple they are given garments, underwear and a T shirt, that you wear under everything. It s kind
of a guide on what to wear over your clothes and you can never show

The Challenges Of King Jamestown
Jamestown faced many challenges along the way and even from the start. Spain had taken control
of the seas and the new world. England knew they needed a chunk of this new world. To
accomplish this objective, King James I sent Bartholomew Gosnold to establish the Virginia
company and to colonize new land in North America. When the 3 ships arrived off the coast of
Virginia, a terrible storm made the sailors lost in the Chesapeake bay. This lead them to find the a
peninsula on the James river where they decided to build their settlement Jamestown.
When the colonists arrived they assumed the Natives would be friendly. They wouldn t carry their
muskets around and weren t prepared so they ended up getting attacked and killed by the Natives. At

The process of digestion...
A.Burger
To begin the process of digestion the burger must be chewed up, this is a form of mechanical
digestion. The saliva produced is used to break up foods into smaller pieces so it is made easier
to swallow, this is using chemical digestion. After being swallowed it travels down the esophagus,
at the end of the esophagus is a muscular ring which allows food to enter the stomach. After
entering it squeezes shut keeping fluid and food from flowing back up. Inside of the stomach,
stomach muscles churn and mix the burger where digestive acids and enzymes are created to help
break the burger down into a liquid or paste. Once broken down it leaves the stomach and enters the
small intestine. As the thick liquid food

Why Colleges Show Their Students With A s Brent Staples...
In the essay Why Colleges Shower Their Students with A s Brent Staples argued that all the
scholars are getting high emblems they don t deserve ( Why Colleges Shower Their Students ).
According to him, there are several reasons behind this increasing A s. Staples focuses on the fact
that getting an A for any class was so complicated that only cum laude students were worth getting
those grades, which gave them a very high and esteemed value. But in this modern era, good grades
have lost the real value. The quantity of students getting an A gradeis increasing day by day. With
the advent of establishment of new colleges every year, the competition has raised among them.
Competing with others is the nature of every creature, whether it is for food, shelter or anything
else. In case of human beings the level of competition is beyond simple things. They compete for
everything in their life. Even a small virtual game played on mobile phone is taken as a great deal
of competition. And when the competition comes to be about the money and the reputation, people
can go to any level to win it. Colleges compete on several levels in order to attract the student.

without any hardship why wouldn t they want it? Of course they will. Additionally, students
who face high debts for their college loans require high grades in order to guarantee future
employment to pay off their loans. Thus, grade appeal processes have become very lenient over
the past several years, which weaken the ability of educators to issue fair grades. Due to this
benefit, they look forward to get enrolled in the college which guarantee their A s. As nobody in

Marie Curie s On The Discovery Of Radium
This source I decided to choose to write about is Marie Curie s On the Discovery of Radium .
This was a firsthand account by Madame Marie Curie herself when she addressed Vasser
College on May 14th 1921. Madame Curie, while discussing her past with the discovery of
radium, could have talked about the whole history of her experimentation, but broke it down to
a very brief account. I will have to say, that even though it was a short and brief writing, it took
longer to read due to the lack of my ability for me to understand what was being explained.
However, Madame Curie was able to briefly give a description of what the process was for her and
her husband to discover radium. This particular source would be considered a primary source
because it is words from Madame Curie and provides a detail of her work with radioactivity.
Madame Curie stated at the beginning of her address that she could talk for a while about
radioactivity, but since there was little time she made a brief explanation about her early work
with radium. From there you get the satisfaction that Madame Curie has from her work with
radium. She almost, in her introduction, gives radium somewhat of an identity by talking about
how the mineral is no longer a baby and is more than twenty years old. With that said it provides
feelings from Madame Curie. She begins her description of the events 24 years earlier back to 1897
while working with her husband, who she refers to as Prof Curie. To provide the

What Was Thomas Jefferson A Success Or Failure
Leo Mayora
Mrs.Stanton Per 4 US History
Common Core Essay
27 November, 2017
Thomas Jefferson is widely recognized as one of the great heroes of American history. Even
Jefferson himself was aware of his historical importance, and to help define his legacy, he wrote his
own epitaph. On his tombstone, he wanted written Here was buried Thomas Jefferson Author of the
Declaration of American Independence, of the Statute of Virginia for religious freedom, Father of
the University of Virginia. Interestingly enough, he did not include the purchase of the Louisiana
Territory. Why would Jefferson fail to include the most important land acquisition in U.S. history as
among his greatest accomplishments? As president, he authorized this purchase, ultimately
considered one of the greatest real estate deals ever made. A mere $15 million dollars doubled the
size of the United States, acquiring economic resources, strategic advantages, and political power. It
also removed obstacles to westward expansion, setting the nation on the road to become a
continental power. Why would Jefferson not recognize this as a significant personal
accomplishment? Did he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There was not specific language in the Constitution that authorized the government to make such
acquisitions of foreign territory, so many people viewed Jefferson s actions as unconstitutional.
They also viewed it as hypocritical, given his previously strict constructionist stance and heavy
criticism of others for stepping beyond the bounds of the Constitution. Jefferson made many
attempts to validate the authorization, arguing, for instance, that What is practicable must often
control what is pure theory. He meant that the practical benefits of the purchase were more
important than his own personal constitutional beliefs. Certainly, although controversial, the
purchase of Louisiana allowed the United States to flourish in ways that one could not have

Importance Of Curriculum For Excellence Essay
Curriculum for Excellence emphasises that all children are entitled to a learning experience where
they feel secure, accepted and valued as members of their class and school community. Learning
environments which have a positive influence on children, achieved by promoting inclusion and
equality, are essential to the Scottish curriculum (CfE, 2004). Getting It Right for Every Child
(2007) policy supports this. Their aspiration is for all children to be fully supported as they grow
into Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Effective Contributors and Responsible Citizens.
Therefore, teachers and practitioners have a responsibility in ensuring children are nurtured,
achieving and included.
However, although many children gain the most they can from the learning opportunities that
schools provide, some will struggle to benefit fully from their learning experiences without
additional help and support (COP, 2010). The Education(Scotland) (Additional Support for
Learning) Act 2004 (as amended 2009) (hereafter, ASfL Act), provides the legal definition for
Additional Support Needs (ASN): A child or young person has additional support needs for the
purposes of this Act, where for whatever reason, the young person is or is likely to ... Show more

earlier years is built upon, practiced and refreshed regularly throughout their time at school. (CfE,
n.d, page 1). Therefore, teachers awareness of children s mathematical skills and understandings
proves key in order for them to adapt learning experiences that will effectively benefit, support and

Deconstructing Tragedy And The Definition Of The...
Deconstructing Tragedy and the Definition of the Protagonist s Innocence In Sophocles Oedipus
Rex, Oedipus meets the Aristotelian definition of a tragic hero as divine fate and tragic flaws lead

fate. The components of a perfect tragedyas defined in Aristotle s Poetics are at the center of
OedipusRex. The play contains the elements of a perfect tragedy such as imitation ... purification ...

Oedipus s anger highlights one of his tragic flaws. Oedipus first outburst of anger was when he
killed his father, reminiscing, I became angry and struck the coachman, and then I killed them all
(Sophocles 880 8). Oedipus s anger continued throughout the play, especially when others inform
him about his fate. When Teiresias accuses Oedipus of killing his father, Oedipus lashes out,
saying And who has taught you truth? Not your profession surely! (Sophocles 388 389). This
response is an attack on Teiresias and the principle of prophecies, as Oedipus exclaims Teirsias s
profession has not taught him truth. Oedipus angrily placed blame on his closest friend for his
doomful fate, Creon, blaming, No, certainly; kill you, not banish you (Sophocles 687). Oedipus
s impulsive and extravagant anger make his angry characteristic all the more harmful. Oedipus s
anger eventually turned on himself, as he blinds himself in reaction to his foolishness and
ignorance. Another aspect of Oedipus s tragic flaw is his hubris. Initially it is clear Oedipus
believes he is Thebe s last hope, stating I Oedipus whom all men call the Great (Sophocles 6).
Oedipus proves his hubris as he stands center stage during almost the entire play. Creon tries to
usher Oedipus off stage and tell him of the news, although Oedipus replies Speak it to all: the grief

Autism Spectrum Disorder Case Study
The inclusion of individuals with ASD in mainstream classroom settings first began with the
introduction of the Education of All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 and later reauthorized as
the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) (US Department of Education) in 1990.
These laws ensured that all children, no matter their disabilitywere included into general education
classrooms, even though they may not have been given the proper learning environment needed to
succeed. Inclusionin the education system has created a lot of controversy among teachers, and
parents. This controversy represents the decision to incorporate students with Autism Spectrum

In the study conducted by Carter, Stephenson, Clark, Costley, Martin, Williams, Browne, Davies,
Bruck, they examined the perspectives on regular and support class placement and the success of
these individuals, where regular class placement was the ultimate goal of children enrolled in the
study, and tracked factors of success (Carter, Stephenson, Clark, Costley, Martin, Williams, Browne,
Davies, Bruck, 2014,p3). This study examined the factors that were either beneficial or acted as a
barrier to individuals with ASD and other classmate s success. Results from this study show that
overall students with ASD had higher achievement in support classrooms rather than mainstream
classrooms where they are given the proper learning level to succeed. Separating these individuals
and placing them in the proper environment, not only benefits ASD individuals, but also benefits
the students in mainstream classrooms, allowing for no distractions and are able to learn to their

Civic Engagement Research Paper
The Politics of Civil Engagement
The United States was founded on the principles of having a democracy that contrasted the British
monarchy that had once controlled them. In order for the newly created democracy to function
properly, citizens were required to actively participate and be aware of the government. In addition,
civilians had to make an effort to support their communities. In the present, the same standards are
held towards all civilians. Without civic engagement, the United States democracy would fall from
grace, as only the individuals who actively care about politics and their communities would have
input on decisions that could impact the lives of others who live in the same city, state, and country.
The Role and Importance of Civic Engagement
Civic engagement acts as the life support of democracy and can be interpreted as two halves. One
half of civic engagement involves all of the actions and decisions that an individual makes to have
the government that represents them best cater to their beliefs and opinions. The other half of civic
engagement involves all of the efforts made by individuals to have a positive growth for their
community. Civic engagement is very important and must be actively fostered by citizens to have
better control over the government and their communities, for a ... Show more content on

Alain De Botton
In his TED talk, A kinder, gentler philosophy of success , Alain de Botton focuses on the
different ways that society views and accepts successes and failures. One model that de Botton
discusses is one where an individual takes their successes and failures to be upon themselves. He
mentions that individuals who take responsibility for their failures, as much as they do their
successes, are more likely to have low self esteem and career anxiety. With this lack of confidence
and added stress, de Botton concludes that it is difficult to find one s kinder, gentler . . . success
because an individual will fear the judgment that will surround their mistakes and the resulting
negative effect on their reputation which are all due to the mistakes that stem from their own
fault. With his argument, de Botton persuades his audience to veer away from believing that one
s mistakes are entirely of their own doing, and he introduces another way of thinking in lieu of it
de Botton states that with an individual s idea of success, one should be aware of their limits and
admit what it s [success] is losing out on. He vies for this kinder, gentler philosophy of success so
that an individual would deal with... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Reflection Of Astroversions And The Value Of An Introverts
After countless years of being relegated to the back burner of society, introverts are finally getting
their moment in the spotlight. That said, misconceptions still abound and we ve yet to shake the
common admonitions to come out of our shell and step out of our comfort zone.
Introverts differ from extroverts in that we gain energy from spending time alone, rather than
through social interaction. The traits that separate us from extroverts are hardwired into our brains
it s not something we can simply change at whim.
But there s nothing wrong with being an introvert.
We don t need to be fixed we re perfectly fine just the way we are. Trying to change or be someone
we re not is a waste of energy. Besides, introverts have a lot of value to offer the world. We re
introspective, full of insight and reflection. We re self aware and observant. We re caring and loyal
friends. We focus on projects intently, think creatively, and solve problems we re excellent
employees and empathetic leaders.
It took me a long time to embrace my introversion. Like many introverts, I thought my preference
for staying in with a good book on a Friday night meant there was something wrong with me.
However, once I educated myself on introversion and its special qualities, I was able to accept
myself for who I was and better maintain my work and personal relationships.
It s not always easy moving through the world as an introvert. If you re struggling to embrace your
introverted nature, consider incorporating the following three methods of self care into your daily
life.
Practice Gratitude
When you re feeling down and someone tells you to count your blessings , it s hard not to tell
them right where to shove it. Empty platitudes rarely make us feel better in fact, they often end
up making us feel worse. That said, gratitude does have a surprisingly powerful impact when it
comes to the world of self care. Studies have shown that people who practice self care through
gratitude have fewer health issues, feel more positively about the future, are more satisfied with
their lives, and get more sleep and feel more refreshed upon waking.
Keeping a gratitude journal a daily or weekly diary of things you re grateful for

The North Dakota Pipeline could be very beneficial for moving oil in a safer and more cost effective manner, but it could also cause irreparable harm to the environment and communities surrounding it. Even though there are benefits to the construction of the pipeline, it would cause more destruction than being a system improvement. The approximate 1,172 mile, 30 inch diameter, would connect Bakken and Three Forks production areas in North Dakota to Patoka, Illinois. The pipeline would allow oil to be moved in a More profitable and environmentally safer manner. Yet, any leak would cause immediate and irreplaceable ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Scramble For Africa In the 1880s the scramble for Africa began. The scramble for Africa was when European countries occupied, colonized, and divided Africa during the period of new imperialism. In the beginning imperialism in Africa seemed beneficial but then opinions changes. As imperialism spread many began to view imperialism differently than before, while some saw only the benefits of imperialism other saw the disastrous aftermath. In the past imperialism in Africawas viewed as both beneficial and harmful because of the disadvantages of imperialism, the benefits of imperialism, and the effects that imperialism had on the Africans. Although there were benefits of African imperialism, there were also disadvantages for the nations. When writing about African imperialism a British scholar, J.A. Hobson, said that during the period of imperialism there were many wars that were caused by Europeans attacking people who they considered to be lower races (Document 1). The lower races were at a disadvantage because the Africans did not have the same modern weaponry that the Europeans did, which was one of the military causes of new imperialism. Another example is an excerpt from Balance Sheets of Imperialism which points out that, In fact, her expenditures on colonies for that time was 6,856 million lire (Document 8). This is an example of a disadvantage because even though there was money being made in the colonies, the countries still had to pay for things like live costs and wars ... Big Boy s History And The 5c Framework Introduction Representatives from Northlich and Frisch s expressed that over the 40 year life of the Frisch s Big Boy brand, Frisch s has neglected managing their marketing strategy and research. As a result, Frisch s marketing style has remained relatively unchanged for decades. Frisch s seeks to attract consumers in the millennial cohort. To implement the changes required to appeal to this new market, Frisch s will benefit from understanding the following elements of the 5C framework: company, climate, customers, collaborators, and competitors. This competitive analysis will contextualize Frisch s Big Boy s history and the 5C Framework to gain an understanding of Frisch s position and competencies in the chain restaurant industry. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Climate Brand recognition is a powerful asset for these firms. To maintain recognition and manage cultural shifts, franchises in the full service sector often make subtle changes to their logos over time. These slight changes go unnoticed by the seasoned consumers, but appeal to emerging consumer segments and modern perceptions (see Appendix A). Northlich s makeover initiatives for Frisch s are valuable, positive changes to open the Frisch s aesthetic to new audiences (see Figure 1). Unfortunately, these changes did not occur over an extended period of time and are immediately visible for all consumers. These changes have faced opposition from older consumers as a result. Frisch s traditional marketing strategies are not suited for millennial consumers because the millennial market did not exist when the original marketing strategies were implemented. Changes, like up dating the Big Boy mascot, are necessary to appeal to Frisch s target millennial market. This industry is moderately regulated (Alvarez, 2016). The food industry as a whole, including full service restaurants have been affected by the public and political discussions of GMO (genetically modified organisms) food products. As millennial consumers become a larger, profitable consumer group; their high value for healthy and authentic food options becomes are more significant driver of success in the ... Outline your contribution, the time commitment required, and what you learned as a result of participating. I am a representative of the Society of Calgary Undergraduate Math. As a representative, three to four hours per week, or forty eight to sixty four hours per semester, are dedicated to office hours, where I am available to anyone who has questions regarding club events and services, such as tutoring, which are offered by the club. In addition, at the end of each semester, I lead the organization of one final exam review session for a chosen entry level mathematics course, which requires meetings with both the professor of the course and the chosen instructor who will lead the review. Overall, the review sessions require two to three hours of preparation, including sitting outside of the review admitting members and providing membership to new members. As a result of being part of the club, I have learned a few very valuable lessons. First, I have acquired better communication skills when conveying information to different audiences. Disseminating information on club events to students requires a different tone than giving the information to a professor, and I have valued the opportunity to become familiar with how professional and informal communications differ. In addition, by working with other members during meetings, I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Calvinist vs Anti-Calvinist in Dr.Faustus The Calvinist/anti Calvinist controversy The theological implications of Doctor Faustus have been the subject of considerable debate throughout the last century. Among the most complicated points of contention is whether the play supports or challenges the Calvinist doctrine of absolute predestination, which dominated the lectures and writings of many English scholars in the latter half of the sixteenth century. According to Calvin, predestination meant that God, acting of his own free will, elects some people to be saved and others to be damned thus, the individual has no control over his own ultimate fate. This doctrine was the source of great controversy because it was seen by the so called anti Calvinists to limit man s free will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the greatest critics of Calvinism in Marlowe s day was Peter Baro, who argued that such teachings fostered despair among believers, rather than repentance among sinners. He claimed, in fact, that Calvinism created a theodical dilemma: What shall we say then? That this question so long debated of the Philosophers, most wise men, and yet undetermined, cannot even of Divines, and men endued with heavenly wisdom, be discussed and decided? And that God hath in this case laid a crosse upon learned men, wherein they might perpetually torment themselves? I cannot so think.[27] Baro recognised the threat of despair which faced the Protestant church if it did not come to an agreement of how to understand the fundamentals. For him, the Calvinists were overcomplicating the issues of faith and repentance, and thereby causing great and unnecessary confusion among struggling believers. Faustus himself confesses a similar sentiment regarding predestination: The reward of sin is death. That s hard. ... If we say that we have no sin, We deceive ourselves, and there s no truth in us. Why then belike we must sin, And so consequently die. Ay, we must die an everlasting death. What doctrine call you this? Che sera, sera, What will be, shall be ? Divinity, ... • 10. The Assassination Of President John F. Kennedy Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. JFK was a man defined by his morality, however his appeasing methods were perceived by some as a weakness, ultimately preluding his inescapable death. It is to a highly significant extent that the CIA was responsible for the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, as contrasting ideologies, acting as motive, integrated with extensive influence and power, enabled the CIA to eliminate JFK, to infiltrate their own desired means of governing. as an impediment of desired governing. Uncertainty of motives, corresponding with former connections to the CIA, generated hesitation for the solitary conviction of Lee Harvey Oswald. Complications concerning domestic and international incidents instigated tensions between the CIA and President Kennedy, later acting as an apparent motive cause for his assassination. Discrepancies regarding eye witness statements, forensic and photographic evidence emerged with the final report issued by the Warren Commission; this resulted in concern and uncertainty as to the quality of investigation into the President s death, highlighting the occurrence of foul play by the CIA. The CIA had a very significant role in the assassination of JFK, as, despite undisputed evidence indicating Lee Harvey Oswald s involvement, it is evident he was exploited in a larger, more elaborate scheme. • 11. The, By Frederick Schauer s Paper, Was Austin Right After... Frederick Schauer s paper, Was Austin Right After All? On the Role of Sanctions in a Theory of Law, has two central claims. First, the fact that law is primarily coercive (with the use of sanctions to ensure compliance) has been vastly overlooked in the wake of H.L.A Hart s critique of John Austin s work on legal positivism. Second, those who aim to study the philosophical nature of law would be better to examine what makes law truly important and distinctive rather than the necessary and mandatory features of law. In this paper, I will begin by describing Austin s account of the nature of law. Then, I will explore Hart s criticisms of Austin s account that Schauer objects to before delving into Schauer s argument. To conclude, I will... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He follows the rules because he sees them as a reason to modify his behaviour. The external point of view, however, describes a member of a group that merely observes rules and is only concerned with avoiding potential sanctions in the case of non compliance. In his critique of Austin s work, Hart believes that in making coercion and sanction a central component of the nature of law, Austin imagines a world filled with bad men , a term introduced by Oliver Wendell Holmes to describe a person who is more concerned with avoiding the adverse consequences of disobedience of the law (or using Hart s terminology, a person taking an external point of view). However, Austin overlooks the fact that most people in a society could be considered puzzled men , which describes a person who is prepared to comply with the law, as long as they are told what they have to do (or again using Hart s terminology, a person taking an internal point of view). Therefore, Hart maintains that Austin s account of the nature of law overlooks the fact that most people take an internal point of view towards the rules. The majority of people do not take into account the sanctions that may befall them if they do not comply; they simply comply because they see the law as a reason to modify their behaviour. The Development of Harmony from Schumann through Brahms to Debussy In studying three composers, Schumann, Brahms and Debussy, it is possible through analysis, to construct a Harmonic development through time from early 1800 s to early 1900 s. I will go about deducing a harmonic timeline by individually looking at each composer then will conclude with a final comparison summarizing how different harmonic elements develop with the Romantic Movement and its progression. The harmonic journey will start with Schumann s Kinderszenen, or Scenes from Childhood. This is a set of thirteen reminiscences of childhood, written during a temporary separation from Clara. In Schumann s Frightening , in bar 21, the C major chord is followed by a tritonal harmonic leap onto a sforzando dominant seventh chord of F sharp major at beat 2. This chord, together with a rising chromatic line heralds the return of the tonic key. Schumann has reinterpreted the chord of C major as the Neapolitan chord (the flattened second) of b minor (the tonic), making the surprising tritonal leap more logical than it initially seems. The original motivic material is presented exactly as it occurred in bars 1 4 to provide an aesthetic harmonic balance to the piece. Textually, Schumann s harmony strikingly contrasts the other pieces, for instance, there are often offbeat semiquavers in the right hand creating a busier/more contrapuntal texture The next harmonic platform is in the study of Brahms devices and techniques in harmony and texture. It is important to note that Brahms, in particular, led the strongest resistance to the more extreme tendencies of musical Romanticism in general (as epitomised by Wagner s music) and I feel this comes across in his use of harmony. As Robin Prior and Trevor Wilson point out in their article Paul Fussell at War, points out that if Fussell s statement about 7000 British men and officers being killed and wounded daily were true then over the course of the war there would be ten million British casualties. Without this recognition from historians, the retelling of historical events could have stayed on the same track of factual based information without providing a narrative, therefore causing a separation from the reader and the event because of a lack of connection. • 19. Boy In The Striped Pajamas The movie, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne, keeps the memory of the Holocaust alive by recounting it history through a tale. The story focuses on a family who lives right next to the death camp in Nazi Germany during the Second World War. Bruno, unaware his father is placed in command of the death camp, makes friends with a boy behind the fence. I believe this movie should have been made. This story approaches the holocaustthrough fictional characters while staying true to the facts throughout the movie by utilizing a child s perception, use of wording, and keeping to the facts. The father uses the form of doublespeak when he said, The thing is Bruno, those people, they are not really people at all . With the majority of tumours being slow growing it has been established from various studies that biennial screening is the most effective time frame. This is due to the identification of slow growing tumours at an early enough stage for recovery and at the same time ensures a reduced rate of false positives compared to annual mammograms.5 In addition, since the proportion of DCIS is highest in younger women, screen detection of DCIS that may not be clinically signiп¬Ѓcant could be considered a further harm. 5 Therefore it is the woman s prerogative whether the risk of cancer outweighs the possibility of coming into contact with the aforementioned harms. • 22. Arthur Leander s Station Eleven The nature of one s history has an inevitable effect on their future. In many cases, the forthcoming situations that one faces are based on recollections of the past and their interpretation of it. Within the novel, Station Eleven, author Emily St. John Mandel develops a plethora of characters whose pastactions and memories have a considerable effect on their future. This is exemplified through the impact that Arthur s turmoil lifestyle has on him as he ages, Tyler s development of radicalistic beliefs due to his exposure towards profound ideology from a very young age, along with Kirsten s change in perspective and formation of interests due to prior actions and memories. Throughout his acting career, Arthur Leander s dramatic lifestyle as well as series of tumultuous events impact him greatly. As decades go by, Arthur s previous affairs reshape his mentality for the future. His fame results in a substantial lack of privacy, and after years of encountering such exposure to the public, his sole desire is to be left in peace. Despite this, during the opening years of his acting career, Arthur is desperate for his first glimpse of fame and wants to be famous (St. John Mandel, 110). • 23. What Are The Similarities Between Cubism And Futurism Introduction The early Twentieth Century faced a series of movements that made an impact during that period. Two of these major movements are Cubism and Futurism, which contrast in their origins, philosophies, and method of creating art, their distinguishing characteristics, and method of relating the subject and viewer in time and space, as well as the artists involved and their unique artworks. By comparing both Movements, I will be able to distinguish the difference as well as the similarities between these movements and the impact they have in modern art. • 28. The Tragedy Of The Mist By Michael Apted The Tragedy That is Gorillas in the Mist Entertainment media, such as television and literature, have often used the archetypal plot tragedy. Tragedy is a plot in which greatness can be crushed and goodness, in turn, defeated. Often, a tragedy presents the challenges of adulthood, rather than a romanticized version of life, proclaiming beauty and youth. In a tragedy, a hero accepts a call to action to go on a journey, and, along the way, fate thwarts their efforts, and they perish or are defeated. Afterwards, the audience experience a feeling of catharsis, or the releasing of a strong emotion (such as pity or fear) (Merriam Webster). Director Michael Apted s Golden Globes winning movie, Gorillas in the Mist, closely followed the plot of a tragedy. Apted uses archetypal characters, symbols, and pathos to portray a tragedy. Using archetypal characters, such as Dian Fossey, Bob Campbell, and the Batwa, Apted depicts a tragic plot in Gorillas in the Mist. Dian Fossey travels to the mountains of Central Africa in order to protect the mountain gorillas whose population was rapidly succumbing to poaching in the area. In order to save their lives, Fossey gives up personal relationships, and devotes all of her attention to the gorillas. In Apted s film, Fossey represents the tragic hero; she takes a call to action to save the mountain gorillas, and is thwarted by efforts from locals in the area, and is eventually murdered for her efforts to protect them. He knows nothing about his fame in South Africa and has no idea how he is deified there. The whole story is told in a linear way to present a dramatic journey of finding Rudriguez. In describing music journey of Rudriguez, the director shoots several full length shots of Rudriguez s wandering. The first wandering shot appears at the sixth minute, where a lonely figure wanders passing by slums, CD shops, the sewer club and Detroit steel factory. He was just a wandering spirit around the city ( Searching for Sugar Man ). This shot indicates several elements of that time, including working class, minority nation, and large company. This was a firsthand account by Madame Marie Curie herself when she addressed Vasser College on May 14th 1921. Madame Curie, while discussing her past with the discovery of radium, could have talked about the whole history of her experimentation, but broke it down to a very brief account. I will have to say, that even though it was a short and brief writing, it took longer to read due to the lack of my ability for me to understand what was being explained. However, Madame Curie was able to briefly give a description of what the process was for her and her husband to discover radium. Importance Of Curriculum For Excellence Essay Curriculum for Excellence emphasises that all children are entitled to a learning experience where they feel secure, accepted and valued as members of their class and school community. Learning environments which have a positive influence on children, achieved by promoting inclusion and equality, are essential to the Scottish curriculum (CfE, 2004). Getting It Right for Every Child (2007) policy supports this. Their aspiration is for all children to be fully supported as they grow into Successful Learners, Confident Individuals, Effective Contributors and Responsible Citizens. Therefore, teachers and practitioners have a responsibility in ensuring children are nurtured, achieving and included. However, although many children gain the most they can from the learning opportunities that schools provide, some will struggle to benefit fully from their learning experiences without additional help and support (COP, 2010). When Teiresias accuses Oedipus of killing his father, Oedipus lashes out, saying And who has taught you truth? Not your profession surely! (Sophocles 388 389). Civic Engagement Research Paper The Politics of Civil Engagement The United States was founded on the principles of having a democracy that contrasted the British monarchy that had once controlled them. In order for the newly created democracy to function properly, citizens were required to actively participate and be aware of the government. In addition, civilians had to make an effort to support their communities. In the present, the same standards are held towards all civilians. Without civic engagement, the United States democracy would fall from grace, as only the individuals who actively care about politics and their communities would have input on decisions that could impact the lives of others who live in the same city, state, and country. The Role and Importance of Civic Engagement Civic engagement acts as the life support of democracy and can be interpreted as two halves. One half of civic engagement involves all of the actions and decisions that an individual makes to have the government that represents them best cater to their beliefs and opinions. One model that de Botton discusses is one where an individual takes their successes and failures to be upon themselves. With this lack of confidence and added stress, de Botton concludes that it is difficult to find one s kinder, gentler . . . success because an individual will fear the judgment that will surround their mistakes and the resulting negative effect on their reputation which are all due to the mistakes that stem from their own fault. Reflection Of Astroversions And The Value Of An Introverts After countless years of being relegated to the back burner of society, introverts are finally getting their moment in the spotlight. That said, misconceptions still abound and we ve yet to shake the common admonitions to come out of our shell and step out of our comfort zone. Introverts differ from extroverts in that we gain energy from spending time alone, rather than through social interaction. The traits that separate us from extroverts are hardwired into our brains it s not something we can simply change at whim. But there s nothing wrong with being an introvert. We don t need to be fixed we re perfectly fine just the way we are. Trying to change or be someone we re not is a waste of energy. Besides, introverts have a lot of value to offer the world. We re introspective, full of insight and reflection. We re self aware and observant. We re caring and loyal friends. We focus on projects intently, think creatively, and solve problems we re excellent employees and empathetic leaders. It took me a long time to embrace my introversion. Like many introverts, I thought my preference for staying in with a good book on a Friday night meant there was something wrong with me.
