Purpose of assessment
 The purpose of assessment is to gather relevant
information about student performance or progress, or
to determine student interests to make judgments
about their learning process.
 Major purposes of Assessment are:
 The purpose of assessment is to provide feedback
relative to the three sides of the triangle: (1) the
learners and learning, (2) the teacher and teaching,
and (3) the learning experience and environment.
The objectives of an assessment
 The objectives of a development assessment focus
more on testing and improving. This type
of assessment is often used in internal selection
procedures or shortly after someone started in a new
position. In that case, the goal is to establish points of
improvement to help the employee in their further
development.
Importance of Assessment in Education
 Assessment is a key component of learning because it
helps students learn. When students are able to see
how they are doing in a class, they are able to
determine whether or not they understand course
material. Assessment can also help motivate
students.
Evaluation
 Evaluation is a process that critically examines a
program. It involves collecting and analyzing information
about a program's activities, characteristics, and outcomes.
Its purpose is to make judgments about a program, to
improve its effectiveness, and/or to inform programming
decisions (Patton, 1987)
Importance of Evaluation
 Evaluation provides a systematic method to study a
program, practice, intervention, or initiative to understand
how well it achieves its goals.
 Evaluations help determine what works well and what
could be improved in a program or initiative.
Program evaluations can be used to: Demonstrate impact
to funders.
Role / Purpose / Objectives of Assessment / Evaluation
Placementdecisions
The type of assessment /evaluation which is being carried out
before the start of any program /session to select certain number of
candidates against given number of seats to run the session /
program is called placement assessment /evaluation.
Classification /grouping decisions
After finalization of the placement decisions, the selected
candidates are further classified / grouped into different sub- groups
/ combinations with respect to the interest / aptitude in different
areas /subjects / discipline.
e-g. The selected candidates for F. Sc. program , the students are
further classified / grouped into pre-Medical and pre-Engineering ,
Computer etc.
Role / Purpose / Objectives of Assessment / Evaluation
Diagnostic decisions.
Assessment / evaluation is generally carried out just at the start of
the session for the diagnostic purposes to get information’s about
the strengths and weaknesses of the learners as well as their
learning difficulties related to different areas and disciplines.
Motivation
Motivation is basically the driving force which inspire the learner to
participate effectively and actively in all the learning activities.
Role / Purpose / Objectives of Assessment / Evaluation
Feed back
Feed back is also known as reaction / response of the learner /
student, this can only be exercised in the light of results of
assessment / evaluation . For a teacher feedback becomes the
basis to review
Methodology and Content /Subjectmatter.
Promotionto next grade/level
In the light of results of summative assessment / evaluation students
are promoted to the next class
Role / Purpose / Objectives of Assessment / Evaluation
Administrativedecisions
Results of assessment /evaluation play very important role to
finalize important decisions for effectiveness of the process /
program. Administrative decisions such as
Placement /grouping of student
Promotion of students
Effectiveness of course content
Curriculum development
Research purposes
Research is conducted to find out the solution of any problem
related to any area /field.

In order to get in formations about the effectiveness of any process /program
for its further continuation in future, assessment /evaluation results play very
important role
Guidanceandcounseling
The results of assessment /evaluation play very important role to exercise the
process of guidance and counseling. Guidance and counseling is a
comprehensive activity which help’s to identify the natural potential of the
learner.
Reportingto theparents
Assessment / evaluation is conducted to inform the parents about the overall
performance /achievement level of the learners.
In this way parents can also play their role to improve the learning level,
which will help to achieve the objectives.

  • 2. Purpose of assessment  The purpose of assessment is to gather relevant information about student performance or progress, or to determine student interests to make judgments about their learning process.  Major purposes of Assessment are:  The purpose of assessment is to provide feedback relative to the three sides of the triangle: (1) the learners and learning, (2) the teacher and teaching, and (3) the learning experience and environment.
  • 3. The objectives of an assessment  The objectives of a development assessment focus more on testing and improving. This type of assessment is often used in internal selection procedures or shortly after someone started in a new position. In that case, the goal is to establish points of improvement to help the employee in their further development.
  • 4. Importance of Assessment in Education  Assessment is a key component of learning because it helps students learn. When students are able to see how they are doing in a class, they are able to determine whether or not they understand course material. Assessment can also help motivate students.
  • 5. Evaluation  Evaluation is a process that critically examines a program. It involves collecting and analyzing information about a program's activities, characteristics, and outcomes. Its purpose is to make judgments about a program, to improve its effectiveness, and/or to inform programming decisions (Patton, 1987)
  • 6. Importance of Evaluation  Evaluation provides a systematic method to study a program, practice, intervention, or initiative to understand how well it achieves its goals.  Evaluations help determine what works well and what could be improved in a program or initiative. Program evaluations can be used to: Demonstrate impact to funders.
  • 7. Role / Purpose / Objectives of Assessment / Evaluation Placementdecisions The type of assessment /evaluation which is being carried out before the start of any program /session to select certain number of candidates against given number of seats to run the session / program is called placement assessment /evaluation. Classification /grouping decisions After finalization of the placement decisions, the selected candidates are further classified / grouped into different sub- groups / combinations with respect to the interest / aptitude in different areas /subjects / discipline. e-g. The selected candidates for F. Sc. program , the students are further classified / grouped into pre-Medical and pre-Engineering , Computer etc.
  • 8. Role / Purpose / Objectives of Assessment / Evaluation Diagnostic decisions. Assessment / evaluation is generally carried out just at the start of the session for the diagnostic purposes to get information’s about the strengths and weaknesses of the learners as well as their learning difficulties related to different areas and disciplines. Motivation Motivation is basically the driving force which inspire the learner to participate effectively and actively in all the learning activities.
  • 9. Role / Purpose / Objectives of Assessment / Evaluation Feed back Feed back is also known as reaction / response of the learner / student, this can only be exercised in the light of results of assessment / evaluation . For a teacher feedback becomes the basis to review Methodology and Content /Subjectmatter. Promotionto next grade/level In the light of results of summative assessment / evaluation students are promoted to the next class

Role / Purpose / Objectives of Assessment / Evaluation Administrativedecisions Results of assessment /evaluation play very important role to finalize important decisions for effectiveness of the process / program. Administrative decisions such as Placement /grouping of student Promotion of students Effectiveness of course content Curriculum development Research purposes Research is conducted to find out the solution of any problem related to any area /field.

Role / Purpose / Objectives of Assessment / Evaluation Programevaluation In order to get in formations about the effectiveness of any process /program for its further continuation in future, assessment /evaluation results play very important role Guidanceandcounseling The results of assessment /evaluation play very important role to exercise the process of guidance and counseling. Guidance and counseling is a comprehensive activity which help’s to identify the natural potential of the learner. Reportingto theparents Assessment / evaluation is conducted to inform the parents about the overall performance /achievement level of the learners. In this way parents can also play their role to improve the learning level, which will help to achieve the objectives.
