Rocks can be categorized as either unconsolidated or consolidated. Unconsolidated rocks like gravel and sand are loosely packed, while consolidated rocks like granite are tightly bound. Consolidated rocks that have been welded together by heat and pressure underground are called bed rocks. There are two types of voids in rocks - primary openings that form at the same time as the rock during volcanic activity, and secondary openings that form after the rock is created through fractures. Semi-consolidated rocks contain a mixture of pores and fractures that are primary or secondary in origin.
