Chemotherapy Research Papers
Researchers at the Purdue University developed a new technology that simulates chemical process and
reaction of tumors with chemotherapy drugs. It is a possible tool for screening anticancer drugs before
approving them for treatment.
There are many different types of chemotherapy drugs, so clinicians may be able to narrow down
which ones are likely to be more effective than others. Successful drug delivery and overcoming drug
resistance are the primary clinical challenges for management and treatment of cancer. To address this
problem, we developed the tumor microenvironment on chip (T MOC), said Bumsoo Han, a professor
of mechanical and biomedical engineering at Purdue University.
The new microfluidic device has a size of 4.5 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The study will continue to test other types of cancers, such as pancreatic and prostate cancers.
This confirms T MOC s predictive ability for in vivo drug response. This initial characterization of T
MOC indicates its transformative potential for testing drug effectiveness, said Han.
Drug Resistance Evolution of Cancer Cells
Cancer cells developed methods to avoid anticancer drugs from killing them. These methods can stop
medicinal effects of chemotherapy and even cytotoxic agents that kill any cells indiscriminately. Bill
Murray, a retired major league baseball administrator, diagnosed with melanoma endured three
separated courses of a new class of immunotherapy to treat the disease.
In 2011, Murray was first given a peptide based vaccine and a monoclonal antibody called nivolumab.
Nivolumab targets the programmed cell death protein 1 displayed on the surface of T cells, a type of
lymphocyte white blood cell. PD 1 works as a signal receptor on activated T cells that packs down T
cell activity after detecting its counterpart, PD L1 on the surface of tumor cells. The nivolumab was
intended to block PD L1 and allow Murray s T cells to fight cancer.
Unfortunately, the treatment did not work and Murray had to be given a new antibody called
ipilimumab. It binds cytotoxic T lymphocyte associated protein 4 expressed by PD 1 T cells. The
ipilimumab allowed Murray s immune system via T cell offensive to combat cancer.
But five years later,

Global Financial Crisis By The Wall Street Crisis
The purpose of this report is to study Global Financial Crisis 2008.This study is inspired by the Wall
street crisis and it covers why s and after effects of the crisis. After this crisis many of the roots causes
were observed like speculation, fragility of the system, greed of the managers which adversely
affected the market. The global financial crisis of 2008 is a major ongoing financial crisis, the worst of
its kind since the Great Depression (The Great Depression originated in the United States occurred on
October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday.). It became prominently visible in September, 2008 with
the failure of several large United States based financial firms. The underlying causes leading to the
crisis had been reported in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As demand for the CDOs started growing across the global investment community, the investment
bankers (like Lehman) who were meant to sell these instruments also started investing a significant
portion of their own capital in these.
As Wall Street firms like Lehman were churning more and more home loans into CDOs and selling
them or investing their own money, there was a pressure on the banks to issue more loans so that they
can be sold to the Wall Street firms in return for a commission. Slowly banks started lowering the
credit quality for availing a home loan and aggressively used agents to source new loans. This slippery
slope went to such an extent that in 2005, almost anyone in the U.S could buy a home worth $100,000
(45 lakhs INR) or more without income proof, without other assets, without credit history, sometimes
even without a proper job.
The U.S. housing market went into a classic speculative bubble. Home loans were easy to get, so more
and more people were buying houses. The increased demand for houses caused the price to increase.
The rising prices created even more demand, as people started to look at homes as investments
investments that never went down in value.
In late 2006, Mortgage lenders noticed that people would choose a house, sign all the mortgage
papers, and then default on their very first payment. Although no one could really hear it, that was
probably the moment when one

Nature Of Human Existence In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the predatory nature of human existence is a
prevalent thematic topic. Throughout the novel, Steinbeck uses various encounters between the
characters Lennie, Crooks, and Curley s wife to express the predatory nature of human existence.
Crooks and Curley s wife are both provided with the opportunity to exercise their power over an
individual who is weaker and more vulnerable than they are. When Crooks and Curley s wife take this
opportunity, they are showing that when the opportunity to use power arises, people will take the
opportunity. People taking advantage of their power over someone else occurs frequently in society.
As a child, I first began to experience the predatory nature of human existence when I was in the
fourth grade and my best friend saw an opportunity to use her power over me and took it. At the end
of my first grade year, I moved away from the small, rural town near Vienna where I had lived since I
was born. On my first day of school at Lincoln Elementary, I quickly made friends with two girls in
my class named Pam and Kelly. Pam and Kelly introduced me to their group of friends that were all in
our second grade class. For the rest of the school year, this group of friends was who I played on the
playground with everyday and talked to in the classroom. After a great first year of school in Marion,
the time came for my third grade year. Every year at Lincoln, there is a day that is close to the
beginning of the school year where the students can come to the school to meet their new teacher and
look at the class list to see which of their friends is in their class. On that morning, I went to Lincoln to
find out who my new teacher was. To my dismay, I found out that all of my friends from second grade
had a different teacher than I did. After finding out that I was not in class with any of my friends, I
knew that I would have to find a new friend to talk to in my third grade class in addition to having all
of my friends from second grade. At the beginning of my third grade year, I hung out with two friends
I met named Phyllis and Erin. As the year progressed, I started to hang out with Angela who would
soon become one of my best

Social Work And The British Welfare Society
With reference to changes in government policy and ideologies of welfare, debate the significance of
the shift from the Victorian Mad pauper to the 21st century Mental health service User and its impact
on social work practice and values.
Since the 19th Century, professional social work and state allocation of resources has gone through
endless evolutions and revolutions, from deciding on the future of the Victorian s mad paupers , those
insane, idle, disabled or recipients of poor relief, (Thane, 1996), to supporting the service users of
today to take charge of their own care. This essay will explore this evolution of social work and the
British welfare society, paying particular attention to the theories of Anti discriminatory Practice
(ADP) and Anti oppressive Practice (AOP), two fundamental aspects of modern day social work;
illustrated by the example of this shift in societal perceptions and treatment of the mad poor to the
mental health service user and consider throughout whether social work has maintained, or lost its
way from, its grounding philanthropic values.
The origins of the social work as a profession is typically accredited to the Victorian 19th Century as a
means of helping the those in need, whilst simultaneously easing the anxiety of social disorder at that
time (Payne, 2005b); however, the practice of social work can be seen much earlier on. If social work
is the compassionate response to an individual or group s need, crisis or problem

1. About Pizza Hut
On June 15th, 1958, two brothers opened the first Pizza Hut restaurant in Wichita, Kansas (U.S.) by
purchasing second hand equipment and renting a small building on a busy cross road. The concept
was relatively new at the time and the brothers quickly saw the potential of this new enterprise. A
short time later, they begun to open new restaurants and developed schedules for franchised outlets.
Their chain started growing up very fast, ten years later Pizza Hut Inc. counted almost 300 restaurants.
In 1986, it had 5,025 domestic units and annual sales of almost $2 billion. Half of the outlets were
franchised. A Pizza Hut restaurant is characterized by a particular freestanding design with a
prominent red roof. The restaurants are full service, eat in/carryout with about 60 to 90 seatings, open
from 11 a.m. to midnight. Pizza Hut´s franchisees have special rights to most of the smaller company

Key Challenges Of The Pharma Industry
Industry Forces
Within the industry there are several challenges that pharma companies face. Of the challenges, three
significantly impact the industry and most certainly shapes how companies like Actavis strategically
position themselves within the changing global marketplace.
Innovation within the value chain is on the decline from decreased R D productivity
Persistent regulatory pressures both in the US and global markets
Loss of revenue due to generic competitors and new industry players such as biotech startups Drug
innovation is one of the key challenges facing the pharma industry. R D focused pharma companies
currently invest approximately $12.6 billion a year in new drug development. This figure historically
has doubled every five years and it typically takes a company 10 years to recoup the amount invested
on one patent protected approved drug, after which competition in the generic sector erodes profit
margins by about 80%. Pharma companies will spend between $350 million and $1 billion on new
drugs over a period of 15 years. This number is staggering considering that 95% of experimental
medicines that make it to human trials fail to be safe or effective. Once a drug makes it to market,
pharma companies have a finite amount of time to capitalize on the sales, distribution and marketing
due to patent expiration. Additionally, something else pharma companies, especially generic focused
companies should worry about is due to lower rates of successful

Yolo: The Rise of an Excuse
With the rising popularity of the anagram Yolo, how has it evolved over the years? In 1989,
Touchstone Pictures released the movie The Dead Poets Society and received both critical acclaim and
box office success. Following its release, Tom Schulman (writer) received an Academy Award for Best
Original Screenplay. The film also won the BAFTAAward for Best Film. The Dead Poets Society
extrapolated a simple idea, Carpe diem. This concept consists of the idea that life must be taken by the
horns and lived to the fullest. Everyday belongs to the individual; a person only has to take advantage
of it to make it worthwhile. Yolo can be beneficial when not taken advantage of or used in an ill

Nietzsche Said Whoever Fights Monsters Should See To It
Nietzsche said Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a
monster. And when you look long into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you (Beyond Good and Evil,
146). Most people are convinced that they are the hero or heroine of a story, but if their motives are
impure, selfish, or short sighted; they may very well turn out to be the villain. In the classic gothic
novel, The Monk by Matthew Lewis in which several characters motives, lives, and deaths become

The pious and godly man that was Ambrosio tries to make excuses for his behavior and pawns his
guilt and judgement onto others. Soon every thought Ambrosio has is not that of a pious man, working
for his Lord, but that of a man growing increasingly impatient for his wants; Antonia a young and
innocent girl is the first on his list. Accordingly, he faults Elvira for requiring him to sneak into
Antonia s room to defile her, as Elvira has banished him from her home, for his mistreatment of her
daughter, Antonia. Therefore, Dr. Jekyll and Ambrosio have very similar ideals about morality. Both
seem to think that if no one perceives them as the guilty party, they are free to do as they please, while
keeping their consciences clean. Ambrose uses magic to sneak around to defile Antonia secretly and
Dr. Jekyll uses science to create an alternate persona to do as he wishes (Stevenson 86). Consequently,
he blames Matilda for their dealings in witchcraft, deciding since she is the one who is doing the
magic; he is blameless in the

The question is unique. In my judgment rules that apply to a host of other symbols, such as state flags,
armbands, or various privately promoted emblems of political or commercial identity, are not
necessarily controlling. Even if flag burning could be considered just another species of symbolic
speech under the logical application of the rules that the Court has developed in its interpretation of
the First Amendment in other contexts, this case has an intangible dimension that makes those rules
inapplicable. Comments: Source: http://www.riverreporter.com/news/library/491us397.htm nbsp;
nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;I don t really have an opinion on this subject. I see where both sides are
coming from and I understand their reasoning. But, I will say that Johnson should not have done it
during the time or at the place where he did. It could have easily started a riot and become a lot more
serious than it did. Principal of Law: Texas Penal Code Ann. 42.09 (1989) states: quot; 42.09.

Episode The One With The Butt
Friends is a TV show follows a gang of six twenty something year olds (Chandler, Monica, Rachel,
Ross, Joey, and Phoebe) living in 1990s Manhattan. In the episode The One with the Butt , it starts off
with crew settling in as they prepare to watch Joey in his new play, Freud!, which is a musical about
Sigmund Freud. In this episode, Chandler briefly dates a woman in a very open relationship, Joey is
hired and fired as the butt double in the new Al Pacino movie, and Monica deals with her obsessive
need for organization. I believe that the disorder that is being portrayed in Monica is Obsessive
Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This anxiety disorder, has a wide spectrum of intensity. It is persistent,
recurring, involuntary thoughts, images, or impulses that invade the consciousness. Some
characteristics of people with this disorder compulsively are checking, counting, cleaning, organizing,
and hoarding (packrats being a lesser version). Monica displays in this episode a chronic need for
organization. I believe that this show accurately portrays Monica s problem and that this episode is a
prime example of her problem. She has these involuntary recurring thoughts that invade her
consciousness regarding organization. Monica wants things to be organized her way and will do

Adjacency Paper
Humans have a fundamental need to belong and have social relationships, and therefore form groups
to fulfill these basic human needs (Baumeister Leary, 1995). The tendency to gravitate to similar
individuals when building social ties is a well known feature of human behaviour, and is referred to as
homophily (McPherson et al., 2001). It is possible that the tendency for homophily within populations,
particularly the perception of physical similarity, influences seating preference more frequently than
expected by chance in day to day social interactions (Mackinnon, Jordan, Wilson, 2011). This
increases the chances of interacting with similar others and decreases the chances of interacting with
dissimilar others simply based on proximity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This means that the converse is true: if not sitting beside women, men must be sitting beside other
men, or alone entirely, which will lead to a positive index of adjacency. The index of adjacency
cannot, however, determine whether the effect is driven primarily by men or women, only that they
tend to avoid sitting beside each other. Thus, if my hypotheses are supported, the index of adjacency
scores will be less than zero, overall. A two tailed t tests, comparing the mean index of adjacency
scores to determine if there is a significant difference between the means will be used to test the
hypotheses. An adjacency will be defined only as a person sitting directly beside another

Sarah Kane Crave Analyse
My over arching idea for my production of Crave is that I want to give the play some context while
also maintaining the theme that these characters could represent anyone. The reason I want to give the
play some background is because on my first read of the play, before I read the Saunders article in
which Sarah Kane talks about the relationships between C and A, and B and M, a lot of the themes of
the play were lost on me because I was so focused on trying to figure out what was going on. I know
Sarah Kane didn t want the characters to get stuck in specific categories, but by establishing
relationships between the characters I think the audience will be able to focus more on what the
characters are saying and less on trying to discern what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I don t want the rest of the stage to be dark though, as that would isolate the characters when I want
them to talk to each other, so the rest of the stage is slightly dimmer then the spots. The tone and color
of the fill lights changes slightly throughout the show, following the color changes of the cyclorama.
The cyc is my central design element for the show. When I read Crave, it seemed to me that the play
was divided into different emotional sections, and I want to use the cyc to reflect that. When the lights
come up after the characters enter, I want the cyc to be a medium dark purple, which I think helps give
the feeling that the play is taking place in the city, which is what I gathered from the dialogue. The
purple should be dark enough that it gives the audience a sense of unease, as each of the characters
relate depressing tales and talk heatedly with one another. When A begins his speech, I want the cyc to
fade into a bright amber that assaults the audience s eyes when it first appears. This symbolizes how
upon first glance, A s speech appears happy and innocent, which the color yellow is associated with,
but that yellow is tainted with something darker and sinister, making it amber. Then, when C mentions
being raped, I want the cyc to fade to a scarlet red, because this I think this marked the transition to the
most violent part of the play. Then when C says, No one can hate me more than myself , I want the
cyc to start transitioning to a medium blue. As the play continues, I want that blue to get continually
darker, symbolizing the characters sinking into despair. When B says Kill me , I want the cyc and all
of the lights to fade away, implying that the characters have passed away. Then for the last few lines of
the play, I want just the cyc to light up bright white, so you can only see the actors silhouettes. I want

Abstract
Throughout the United States, there are many correctional facilities that house thousands of inmates.
Individuals who work within these facilities have a tough job in maintaining the prison facility and the
inmates. Correctional officers are called the front line workers and are responsible for looking after the
inmates. The officers who work for the correctional facility deal with issues that may arise inside and
outside of the facility. The subject to discuss is to evaluate the past, present, and future trends

There is not enough data that shows that treatment and rehabilitation programs will reduce criminal
behavior in an offender and keep the offender from re offending. Once an offender is released from an
institution, he or she may have an idea about the way an institution is ran by his or her demeanor and
attitude one he or she is released from the facility. Community based correction programs are about as
important as a lock down facility. These types of programs are designed to hold the inmate
accountable for his or her actions, but also hold the communities responsible for reducing crime.
Individuals who work toward reducing crime with the help of community based programs are also
working hard to keep the community members involved in reducing crime, but also help the
community understand how to manage offenders and get the offenders reintegrated back into the
community (Evans, D., 2004). Another trend that has caused issues for correctional facilities is gangs
within the prison facility. Gangs within a correctional facility have been an ongoing issue for many
years. There are so many members of gangs that are incarcerated and these gang members when
brought into a correctional facility also bring his or her beliefs that his or her gang is the best. When
members of the same gang become incarcerated in the same correctional facility, the prison gang
grows and this causes a risk in harming the other inmates as

In the case Donoghue v Stevenson [1932] AC 562 , Lord Macmillan said in his judgment that That
duty, in my opinion, he owes to those whom he intends to consume his product. This concluded that
Stevenson did owed a duty of care to Donoghue even though she is not the one who bought the drink
but she is the one who drank it and that Stevenson did breached the duty of care between them. Lord
Atkin put forward the neighbour principle, which states that:
The rule that you are to love your neighbour becomes in law, you must not injure your neighbour...
You must take reasonable care to avoid acts or omissions which you can reasonably foresee would be
likely to injure your neighbour...
Therefore, the food vendor did owe a duty of care to Luke. Duty of care is the obligation imposed on a
person to take reasonable care to ensure that they do not cause another person to suffer harm . Duty of
care exists between a food vendor and the consumer. In this case, the food vendor breached his duty of

Assimilation And Schemas
Assimilation, Accommodation, and Schemas. Consider Piaget s concepts of assimilation and

cognitive development proposes that kids move through four unique phases of mental development.
His hypothesis centers around understanding how children acquire knowledge, as well as on
understanding the nature of intelligence. As children interact with their general surroundings, they
constantly include new learning, expand upon existing knowledge, and adapt already held plans to

The third is Accommodation. Another piece of adjustment includes changing or modifying our current

change patterns she saw during therapy with families. As far as I can tell, the examples she describes

individuals to look for improvement information and ideas from outside the group. Resistance is

Love And Honor Through The Ages. Love Can Do Crazy Things
Love and Honor Through the Ages Love can do crazy things to many individuals; making them crazy

Middle Ages, love was termed as chivalry or noble love, and then romantic love in the Nineteenth
Century of Romanticism. I will discover and show how it changed during the periods of literature with
the materials we have studied in this class. Let s start at the beginning it s a very good place to start.

First and foremost, a knight was expected to act honorably in his presentation in battles and in his
treatment of women. Common with the times in which this and the next story were written, the Middle
Ages was the expression of chivalry. Depicted within these stories, the unwavering valor in the face of
danger, loyalty to one s leader and companions, and an intense concern for personal honor (Lawall
1145) are shown multiple times over. Consequently, throughout the story, Arcite and Palamon faltered
in their knightly code, much like the knights in the next story, Malory s The Knight of the Cart.
Here we find Lancelot and Meliagrance in love with Queen Guenever. Meliagrance deceitfully

Restructuring Debt Data
Understanding the reporting and disclosure requirements for the different types of debt regarding debt
restructuring is imperative. The manager of this company has requested an explanation of the above
regarding bonds payable, notes payable, and capital leases. This paper should satisfy any questions
about these topics.
Long Term Liabilities Included are several types of long term liabilities; bonds payable, notes payable,
and capital leases. Each of these types of debts have some similarities and some differences regarding
the reporting and disclosure requirements, so to better understand those requirements and ensure
proper application of requirements, an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The capital lease reported on the balance sheet at the end of the reporting period is the net of principal
payment component of the lease payment.
Reporting and Disclosures
Note disclosures for long term debt should include the nature of the liabilities, maturity dates, interest
dates, call provisions, conversion privileges, restrictions imposed by creditors, and assets designated
or pledged as security (Kieso, et al., 2007). In addition, any sinking fund future payments and maturity
amounts of long term debt during each of the next five years is required for disclosure. If the company
is able to estimate the fair value of the long term debt practically, disclosure of this information is
required too.
Debt Restructuring
With debt restructuring, if there is a substantive modification of any of the terms of the existing debt
or a purchase or other settlement of an existing debt through repayment or replacement, then the
debtor needs to account for a gain or loss on the debt restructuring. In this company s situation, the
debt settled earlier than the original maturity date; so therefore, there was a substantive modification
of terms. In this case, the journal entries are as follows:

Gain on the Restructuring of Debt.................................600,000

Descriptive Essay About Mission Inn

English 1A
2 November 2017
The Mission Inn Walking the streets through Downtown Riverside, it s hard to miss the giant castle
esque structure that takes up an entire city block. The Mission Inn s Spanish architecture and lush
green variety of trees and bushes can be seen from a mile away. Taking an aerial view of Downtown
Riverside allows one to see what sets this entire city block apart. The tops of every building that make
up the Inn are colored a foreign maroon red which greatly contrast with the rest of the city s boring
gray rooftops. The structure makes a giant upside down horseshoe shape which is centered around a
gorgeous sparkling pool, which itself is surrounded by a ring of greenery that encompasses the entire
center of the U shape. Behind the U are several wings that make up the rest of the Inn, which include
rooms for guests to stay in and all of the other commodities that the hotel has for visitors, such as a
museum filled with artwork and artifacts, and several different dining options.
Before entering the ancient luxurious Spanish castle through the main entrance, one walks through
walkways filled with rich shrubbery and plants that line the wall and the fence closest to the street.
The entrance to the Inn lies behind the U shaped driveway where guests can have their exotic cars
valet parked. Entering the Mission Inn in Downtown Riverside during the night time was a
breathtaking experience. Sounds of crickets chirping and

instrument to the cause of preserving the integrity of the sport, and aspiring for its orderly
development. It further went on to state that the measures implemented by the consortium under its
pyramid structure were not unconditionally inherent and proportionate to the achievements of purely
sporting objectives. In fact, the CCI read a strong commercial dimension into the conduct of the board.
While some may argue that this case lacks the balancing of rights perspective that was employed in
the Hockey India judgment, it would also, perhaps, not be altogether misguided to prefer the Hockey
India judgment to have progressed on the lines of the BCCI case. With a firm recommendation to
revamp the core structure of its organisation such that clashes between its regulatory and
organisational powers cease to be a regular feature, the CCI liberated Hockey India of the charges
levelled against it. Directing the institution of a rationalised and transparent system to supervise the
promulgation of NOCs, the CCI relied on an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The stance of the CCI does appear to be rather implausible, especially as it dismisses the arguments to
the alternative citing the lack of evidence that effectively corroborates that Hockey India deliberately
acted against the players who wished to participate in the league. Moreover, it is pertinent to note that
within a year of the alleged anti competitive policies being drawn up by Hockey India, its proposal for
a rival league was released. Hence, to absolve the body for inclusion of commercial aspects in its
practices might hardly be the way to proceed. In addition, while the CoC Agreement did not explicitly
enjoin the freedom of players to participate in the World Series Hockey League, it certainly served as

Causes Of The Harlem Renaissance
The Harlem Renaissance was an important national movement with connections to international
developments in art and culture in the African American culture (Wintz). The movement also known
as the Jazz Age , started on different dates depending on the viewer s interpretation of the Harlem
Renaissance. For instance, if your interpretation of the Harlem Renaissance is literature, then it began
in the year 1924. However, most people associate the year 1920 with the creation of the Harlem
Renaissance. The Great Migration was one major start to the Harlem Renaissance due to the
movement of African Americans from the South to Harlem. The Great Migration was caused by racial
discrimination against African Americans as well as slavery. There were racial groups such as the
KKK (Ku Klux Klan) that used violence against African Americans to prove a point. Not only were
the KKK the cause of the Great Migration but as well as the wanting of improvement in lifestyle.
Harlem provided the African Americans the opportunity to receive a better paying job to support their
families as well as superior education. As we all know, African Americans did not have an easy life in
the South as a result of slavery and segregation. As a result, many African Americans saw Harlem in
New York as an opportunity to improve their family s lifestyles along with their own. This led to the
development of African American culture, such as jazz music, art and literature. For instance, Chick
Webb reflects the ideas, values and contributions of the Harlem Renaissance through his
accomplishments and musical influence. William Henry Webb was a famous swing era jazz drummer
and bandleader, however; he did face many challenges to accomplish his goal. William Henry Webb
was born in Baltimore, Maryland with spinal tuberculosis. Spinal tuberculosis affects the spinal
vertebrates, which causes the individual to have a lump in their back and prevent them from growing
like a normal human being. As a result, William Henry Webb was given the nickname Chick Webb. In
addition, his date of birth is unclear due to the lack of documentation during his birth. However, some
believe he was born in the year 1902 while others believe it was 1909. Due to the condition he

Hero Archetype
What Does It Take to Be a Hero? Heroes are often portrayed as crime fighters or saviors. However,
anyone who shows courage, selflessness, and virtues qualify for the hero archetype. Steven Spielberg
s 1982 film E.T. the Extra Terrestrial narrates the Taylor family s efforts to illegally house an alien
long enough to escort E.T. to its Mothership for a return to the species planet without seeking attention
from scientists or police. The main character and protagonist Elliott Taylor relates to a mythological
hero archetype visualized by Joseph Campbell consisting of three stages, the departure, initiation, and

What Is Office Depot s Gross Profit Margin
Gross profit margin reflects the amount of revenue from sales that is left for profit and to pay other
expenses after the cost of the goods sold is subtracted. This margin is roughly equivalent to the
markup on a product and reflects the amount over cost the company is able to charge. Firms in retail
can usually increase their gross profit margin if they can differentiate themselves from their
competitors and charge a higher price for roughly equivalent products. Staples has pulled ahead of
Office Depot in recent years, mostly owing to a drop in Office Depot s margin from roughly 30% to
about 24%. This drop is significant because that means less money from sales is flowing through the
company to cover operating and other expenses, and contributed to problems such as those discussed
with the times interest earned ratio. Staples, while facing slight declines in its margin, has been able to
keep its gross ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The operating profit margin is this amount as a percentage of total gross sales. This is where Office
Depot s problems, as well as some of Staples become apparent. For Staples, there is wide variation in
this margin from year to year, whereas their gross profit margin had relatively small variation. This
signifies that Staples likely has less control of its expenses that are incurred in the operating section.
An improvement in controlling these expenses could not only improve the bottom line, but also make
the company s earnings more predictable from year to year. Staples still fares comparatively well here
when compared to Office Depot, who is already losing money before interest and income taxes are
subtracted. It is interesting that, despite its many advantages in most functional areas, Amazon lags
behind Staples here. This may indicate that a certain competency exists here for Staples to

Tennyson Owen
War Poems Their Ideas The poems, The Charge of The Light Brigade and Dulce et Decorum Est, both
deal with an idea of war. The writers both have the same viewpoint about war, but the way that they
articulate those ideas on paper varies. Through literary devices in the poems, the authors show two
different wars, but the same tragic outcome death. These two poems showcase how people can have
different outlooks on war, but in the end they all end with the same deadly outcome. These writers,
Wilfred Owen and Alfred Lord Tennyson, uses tone, metaphor or repetition, and rhyming and diction
to present a more concrete version on their perception of war. The ... Show more content on

The tone that Alfred Lord Tennyson created for this poem has an honorable and celebratory feel to it
for those whom were lost. The overall tone of the poem capitalizes on the his idea of war and how we
should be acting towards those who have given up themselves to hopefully makes their country better.
Wilfred Owen s Dulce et Decorum Est also created a specific tone in his poem as well. His poem takes
on a completely different tone though. In his version of a war piece, Owen is showing us how war is
bad and how much he feels that it is wrong, and how we won t like the conclusion that results from
them. This war poem, about the First World War, has a more negative look on the actions of war. An
example of this tone can be seen in the first stanza. According to the Bloom s Literary Reference
Online, The first stanza presents a scene saturated with misery. (Dulce et Decorum Est) Throughout
the entire piece Owen gives us the tone of misery, awful challenges, and death all negative feelings.
We can see in the last couple of lines of the poem how Owen really felt about war, The old Lie, Dulce
et Decorum est / Pro patria mori. (27 28) This roughly translates to it is sweet and right to die for your
country. It is a wonderful thing that one could die for their country, the soldiers should be filled with
honor to do so. But Wilfred Owen tells us

The Feminist Perspective of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Essay
The Feminist Perspective of Buffy the Vampire Slayer
In her feminist critique of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Anne Millard Daughtey described Buffy as a
show which obviously promotes female strength and power (159). Buffy herself is a symbol of female
empowerment (149); as feminists we can all take comfort in the fact that Buffy kicks butt and so can
we all (164). Sherryl Vint agrees that Buffy is a positive role model for young women, one which
feminism should celebrate (para. 3). I find this understanding of Buffy, both the character and the
series, to be very problematic, and with this paper I aim to undertake a revised feminist critique of the
show, and expose the Buffyverse as the product of a very traditional patriarchal ... Show more content

Before Buffy and her friends discover this, Dawn has a number of unnerving experiences, in which
people walk up to her staring, saying There s nothing there, you re not real, there s nothing there .
Truly, in the Buffyverse, there is no such thing as woman .
Prior to embarking upon my own analysis of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it this pertinent to consider
Joss Whedon s envisioning of his series, and in particular, his heroine, Buffy. In interviews he has
often explained his desire to create an alternative ending for the horror movie:
It was pretty much the blond girl in the alley in the horror movie who keeps getting killed ... I felt bad
for her, but she was always much more interesting to me than the other women. She was fun, she had
sex, she was vivacious. But then she would get punished for it. Literally, I just had that image, that
scene, in my mind, like the trailer for a movie what if the girl goes into that dark alley. And the
monster follows her. And she destroys him. (Quoted in Vint, para. 6)
Whilst we see here that Whedon s intention is to subvert the conventional horror movie/slasher genre,
I m not sure that he is successful. He is running the considerable risk of merely replacing the fetishised
female victim with a fetishised female hero; she is still a pretty blond girl, she is still fun, she is still
sexual, she is still Barbie with

Golden Age Of Animation
Animation plays an enormous role in the entertainment industry today. The Global Animation and
Gaming Market is estimated to be worth $242.92 billion (as of 2016), and animated films are the most
profitable of any film genre. This industry has widespread influence amongst all age groups, and the
films produced can span any genre. The industry has seen major changes with the recent advances in
computer generated animation techniques. To fully understand animation, it s important to see where it
began. What is considered animation? That question is more loaded than many believe, as the
definition of animation is still debated today. This allows for some controversy as to what is the first

During this time, many classic characters emerged, including Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, Superman,

notably allowing their animators more freedom to develop different styles than other studios at the
time. As disney started to make the shift into primarily focusing on feature length films, Warner Bros
continued to focus on making shorts, such as the successful Looney Tunes series. The Golden Age
started to rely more on voice actors to help bring these characters to life, and scores played by studio
orchestras to complete the story. During this time, colored televisions became available to more and
more Americans changing the ways they can receive their entertainment. In 1958 the Huckleberry
Hound Show was the first half an hour television show to feature only animation. This eventually led
to popular cartoons such as The Flintstones, being featured on primetime television. The golden age of
animation came to an end when televised cartoons started to gain large viewerships, and animated

Observation can be made on a macro and micro scale, as behavior of a large group can affect the
behavior of individuals (Merton, 1938). In Brazil, society is regulated and positioned a certain way
that satisfies its government. Reaching a desirable achieved status seems hard to accomplish and only
possible if conformed to the Ministry s regime. Sam, however, was offered a promotion by the master
status himself, Mr. Helpmann. Seemingly, Sam s promotion offer was possible because of his ascribed
status being the son of Mr. Helpmann s former co worker and his power hungry mother s connection
with the Ministry. The social institution in the world of Brazil is centralized to abide the Ministry, who
targets society to be uniformed and consumers. Considering the Consumers for Christ signs and the
girls who wishes to Santa for her own credit card , there is an encompassing feeling of consumerism
that citizens believe as holy. Displays of Tönnies Gesellschaft are frequent, as social control must rest
on more formal techniques, such as laws and legally defined punishments (Schaefer, 2013). Behaviors
of the people are carried with the subconscious awareness of the Ministry, hence the lack of
individualism and expectation of carrying out usual social roles and norms. Any employee of the

Emergency Radiology Research Paper
Do you ever wonder how radiation was discovered? Or when it was discovered? It all started in 1895,
when Wilhelm Roentgen discovered x rays. Six years later, he was honored with the first Nobel Prize
in Physics; by then, doctors were already using primitive x rays to diagnose illnesses(Men s Health
watch 1). The collaboration between physicians and physicists has continued ever since, resulting in
amazing advances far beyond Roentgen s wildest dreams. Physicists tell us that ionizing radiation
delivers energy in the form of photons that pack enough oomph to strip electrons away from the nuclei
of atoms(1). We are continuously exposed to tiny amounts of ionizing radiation from cosmic rays and

  • 2. Chemotherapy Research Papers Researchers at the Purdue University developed a new technology that simulates chemical process and reaction of tumors with chemotherapy drugs. It is a possible tool for screening anticancer drugs before approving them for treatment. There are many different types of chemotherapy drugs, so clinicians may be able to narrow down which ones are likely to be more effective than others. Successful drug delivery and overcoming drug resistance are the primary clinical challenges for management and treatment of cancer. To address this problem, we developed the tumor microenvironment on chip (T MOC), said Bumsoo Han, a professor of mechanical and biomedical engineering at Purdue University. The new microfluidic device has a size of 4.5 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The study will continue to test other types of cancers, such as pancreatic and prostate cancers. This confirms T MOC s predictive ability for in vivo drug response. This initial characterization of T MOC indicates its transformative potential for testing drug effectiveness, said Han. Drug Resistance Evolution of Cancer Cells Cancer cells developed methods to avoid anticancer drugs from killing them. These methods can stop medicinal effects of chemotherapy and even cytotoxic agents that kill any cells indiscriminately. Bill Murray, a retired major league baseball administrator, diagnosed with melanoma endured three separated courses of a new class of immunotherapy to treat the disease. In 2011, Murray was first given a peptide based vaccine and a monoclonal antibody called nivolumab. Nivolumab targets the programmed cell death protein 1 displayed on the surface of T cells, a type of lymphocyte white blood cell. PD 1 works as a signal receptor on activated T cells that packs down T cell activity after detecting its counterpart, PD L1 on the surface of tumor cells. The nivolumab was intended to block PD L1 and allow Murray s T cells to fight cancer. Unfortunately, the treatment did not work and Murray had to be given a new antibody called ipilimumab. It binds cytotoxic T lymphocyte associated protein 4 expressed by PD 1 T cells. The ipilimumab allowed Murray s immune system via T cell offensive to combat cancer. But five years later, ... • 3. Global Financial Crisis By The Wall Street Crisis The purpose of this report is to study Global Financial Crisis 2008.This study is inspired by the Wall street crisis and it covers why s and after effects of the crisis. After this crisis many of the roots causes were observed like speculation, fragility of the system, greed of the managers which adversely affected the market. The global financial crisis of 2008 is a major ongoing financial crisis, the worst of its kind since the Great Depression (The Great Depression originated in the United States occurred on October 29, 1929, known as Black Tuesday.). It became prominently visible in September, 2008 with the failure of several large United States based financial firms. The underlying causes leading to the crisis had been reported in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As demand for the CDOs started growing across the global investment community, the investment bankers (like Lehman) who were meant to sell these instruments also started investing a significant portion of their own capital in these. As Wall Street firms like Lehman were churning more and more home loans into CDOs and selling them or investing their own money, there was a pressure on the banks to issue more loans so that they can be sold to the Wall Street firms in return for a commission. Slowly banks started lowering the credit quality for availing a home loan and aggressively used agents to source new loans. This slippery slope went to such an extent that in 2005, almost anyone in the U.S could buy a home worth $100,000 (45 lakhs INR) or more without income proof, without other assets, without credit history, sometimes even without a proper job. The U.S. housing market went into a classic speculative bubble. Home loans were easy to get, so more and more people were buying houses. The increased demand for houses caused the price to increase. The rising prices created even more demand, as people started to look at homes as investments investments that never went down in value. In late 2006, Mortgage lenders noticed that people would choose a house, sign all the mortgage papers, and then default on their very first payment. Although no one could really hear it, that was probably the moment when one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Nature Of Human Existence In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the predatory nature of human existence is a prevalent thematic topic. Throughout the novel, Steinbeck uses various encounters between the characters Lennie, Crooks, and Curley s wife to express the predatory nature of human existence. Crooks and Curley s wife are both provided with the opportunity to exercise their power over an individual who is weaker and more vulnerable than they are. When Crooks and Curley s wife take this opportunity, they are showing that when the opportunity to use power arises, people will take the opportunity. People taking advantage of their power over someone else occurs frequently in society. As a child, I first began to experience the predatory nature of human existence when I was in the fourth grade and my best friend saw an opportunity to use her power over me and took it. At the end of my first grade year, I moved away from the small, rural town near Vienna where I had lived since I was born. On my first day of school at Lincoln Elementary, I quickly made friends with two girls in my class named Pam and Kelly. Pam and Kelly introduced me to their group of friends that were all in our second grade class. For the rest of the school year, this group of friends was who I played on the playground with everyday and talked to in the classroom. After a great first year of school in Marion, the time came for my third grade year. Every year at Lincoln, there is a day that is close to the beginning of the school year where the students can come to the school to meet their new teacher and look at the class list to see which of their friends is in their class. On that morning, I went to Lincoln to find out who my new teacher was. To my dismay, I found out that all of my friends from second grade had a different teacher than I did. After finding out that I was not in class with any of my friends, I knew that I would have to find a new friend to talk to in my third grade class in addition to having all of my friends from second grade. At the beginning of my third grade year, I hung out with two friends I met named Phyllis and Erin. As the year progressed, I started to hang out with Angela who would soon become one of my best ... • 5. Social Work And The British Welfare Society With reference to changes in government policy and ideologies of welfare, debate the significance of the shift from the Victorian Mad pauper to the 21st century Mental health service User and its impact on social work practice and values. Since the 19th Century, professional social work and state allocation of resources has gone through endless evolutions and revolutions, from deciding on the future of the Victorian s mad paupers , those insane, idle, disabled or recipients of poor relief, (Thane, 1996), to supporting the service users of today to take charge of their own care. This essay will explore this evolution of social work and the British welfare society, paying particular attention to the theories of Anti discriminatory Practice (ADP) and Anti oppressive Practice (AOP), two fundamental aspects of modern day social work; illustrated by the example of this shift in societal perceptions and treatment of the mad poor to the mental health service user and consider throughout whether social work has maintained, or lost its way from, its grounding philanthropic values. The origins of the social work as a profession is typically accredited to the Victorian 19th Century as a means of helping the those in need, whilst simultaneously easing the anxiety of social disorder at that time (Payne, 2005b); however, the practice of social work can be seen much earlier on. • 8. Key Challenges Of The Pharma Industry Industry Forces Within the industry there are several challenges that pharma companies face. Of the challenges, three significantly impact the industry and most certainly shapes how companies like Actavis strategically position themselves within the changing global marketplace. Innovation within the value chain is on the decline from decreased R D productivity Persistent regulatory pressures both in the US and global markets Loss of revenue due to generic competitors and new industry players such as biotech startups Drug innovation is one of the key challenges facing the pharma industry. R D focused pharma companies currently invest approximately $12.6 billion a year in new drug development. This figure historically has doubled every five years and it typically takes a company 10 years to recoup the amount invested on one patent protected approved drug, after which competition in the generic sector erodes profit margins by about 80%. Pharma companies will spend between $350 million and $1 billion on new drugs over a period of 15 years. This number is staggering considering that 95% of experimental medicines that make it to human trials fail to be safe or effective. Once a drug makes it to market, pharma companies have a finite amount of time to capitalize on the sales, distribution and marketing due to patent expiration. Additionally, something else pharma companies, especially generic focused companies should worry about is due to lower rates of successful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the classic gothic novel, The Monk by Matthew Lewis in which several characters motives, lives, and deaths become intertwined. The pious and godly man that was Ambrosio tries to make excuses for his behavior and pawns his guilt and judgement onto others. Soon every thought Ambrosio has is not that of a pious man, working for his Lord, but that of a man growing increasingly impatient for his wants; Antonia a young and innocent girl is the first on his list. Accordingly, he faults Elvira for requiring him to sneak into Antonia s room to defile her, as Elvira has banished him from her home, for his mistreatment of her daughter, Antonia. Therefore, Dr. Jekyll and Ambrosio have very similar ideals about morality. Both seem to think that if no one perceives them as the guilty party, they are free to do as they please, while keeping their consciences clean. Ambrose uses magic to sneak around to defile Antonia secretly and Dr. Jekyll uses science to create an alternate persona to do as he wishes (Stevenson 86). In my judgment rules that apply to a host of other symbols, such as state flags, armbands, or various privately promoted emblems of political or commercial identity, are not necessarily controlling. Even if flag burning could be considered just another species of symbolic speech under the logical application of the rules that the Court has developed in its interpretation of the First Amendment in other contexts, this case has an intangible dimension that makes those rules inapplicable. • 12. Episode The One With The Butt Friends is a TV show follows a gang of six twenty something year olds (Chandler, Monica, Rachel, Ross, Joey, and Phoebe) living in 1990s Manhattan. In the episode The One with the Butt , it starts off with crew settling in as they prepare to watch Joey in his new play, Freud!, which is a musical about Sigmund Freud. In this episode, Chandler briefly dates a woman in a very open relationship, Joey is hired and fired as the butt double in the new Al Pacino movie, and Monica deals with her obsessive need for organization. I believe that the disorder that is being portrayed in Monica is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). This anxiety disorder, has a wide spectrum of intensity. It is persistent, recurring, involuntary thoughts, images, or impulses that invade the consciousness. Some characteristics of people with this disorder compulsively are checking, counting, cleaning, organizing, and hoarding (packrats being a lesser version). Monica displays in this episode a chronic need for organization. I believe that this show accurately portrays Monica s problem and that this episode is a prime example of her problem. • 13. Adjacency Paper Humans have a fundamental need to belong and have social relationships, and therefore form groups to fulfill these basic human needs (Baumeister Leary, 1995). The tendency to gravitate to similar individuals when building social ties is a well known feature of human behaviour, and is referred to as homophily (McPherson et al., 2001). It is possible that the tendency for homophily within populations, particularly the perception of physical similarity, influences seating preference more frequently than expected by chance in day to day social interactions (Mackinnon, Jordan, Wilson, 2011). This increases the chances of interacting with similar others and decreases the chances of interacting with dissimilar others simply based on proximity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 14. Sarah Kane Crave Analyse My over arching idea for my production of Crave is that I want to give the play some context while also maintaining the theme that these characters could represent anyone. The reason I want to give the play some background is because on my first read of the play, before I read the Saunders article in which Sarah Kane talks about the relationships between C and A, and B and M, a lot of the themes of the play were lost on me because I was so focused on trying to figure out what was going on. I know Sarah Kane didn t want the characters to get stuck in specific categories, but by establishing relationships between the characters I think the audience will be able to focus more on what the characters are saying and less on trying to discern what ... When I read Crave, it seemed to me that the play was divided into different emotional sections, and I want to use the cyc to reflect that. When the lights come up after the characters enter, I want the cyc to be a medium dark purple, which I think helps give the feeling that the play is taking place in the city, which is what I gathered from the dialogue. The purple should be dark enough that it gives the audience a sense of unease, as each of the characters relate depressing tales and talk heatedly with one another. When A begins his speech, I want the cyc to fade into a bright amber that assaults the audience s eyes when it first appears. This symbolizes how upon first glance, A s speech appears happy and innocent, which the color yellow is associated with, but that yellow is tainted with something darker and sinister, making it amber. Then, when C mentions being raped, I want the cyc to fade to a scarlet red, because this I think this marked the transition to the most violent part of the play. Then when C says, No one can hate me more than myself , I want the cyc to start transitioning to a medium blue. As the play continues, I want that blue to get continually darker, symbolizing the characters sinking into despair. When B says Kill me , I want the cyc and all of the lights to fade away, implying that the characters have passed away. Then for the last few lines of the play, I want just the cyc to light up bright white, so you can only see the actors silhouettes. I want the audience ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

D Abstract Throughout the United States, there are many correctional facilities that house thousands of inmates. Individuals who work within these facilities have a tough job in maintaining the prison facility and the inmates. Correctional officers are called the front line workers and are responsible for looking after the inmates. The officers who work for the correctional facility deal with issues that may arise inside and outside of the facility. There is not enough data that shows that treatment and rehabilitation programs will reduce criminal behavior in an offender and keep the offender from re offending. Once an offender is released from an institution, he or she may have an idea about the way an institution is ran by his or her demeanor and attitude one he or she is released from the facility. Community based correction programs are about as important as a lock down facility. These types of programs are designed to hold the inmate accountable for his or her actions, but also hold the communities responsible for reducing crime. Individuals who work toward reducing crime with the help of community based programs are also working hard to keep the community members involved in reducing crime, but also help the community understand how to manage offenders and get the offenders reintegrated back into the community (Evans, D., 2004). For instance, if your interpretation of the Harlem Renaissance is literature, then it began in the year 1924. However, most people associate the year 1920 with the creation of the Harlem Renaissance. The Great Migration was one major start to the Harlem Renaissance due to the movement of African Americans from the South to Harlem. The Great Migration was caused by racial discrimination against African Americans as well as slavery. There were racial groups such as the KKK (Ku Klux Klan) that used violence against African Americans to prove a point. Not only were the KKK the cause of the Great Migration but as well as the wanting of improvement in lifestyle. Harlem provided the African Americans the opportunity to receive a better paying job to support their families as well as superior education. As we all know, African Americans did not have an easy life in the South as a result of slavery and segregation. As a result, many African Americans saw Harlem in New York as an opportunity to improve their family s lifestyles along with their own. This led to the development of African American culture, such as jazz music, art and literature. Firms in retail can usually increase their gross profit margin if they can differentiate themselves from their competitors and charge a higher price for roughly equivalent products. Staples has pulled ahead of Office Depot in recent years, mostly owing to a drop in Office Depot s margin from roughly 30% to about 24%.
