Throughout Othello, the destructive nature of jealousy plays a major role in determining the
dreadful end of the play. Most of the jealousy which is seen stems from Iago; Othello s most trusted

One of the first pieces of evidence we receive of Iago s motives for his hatred for Othello is when he
tells Roderigo that Emilia (Iago s wife) may have committed adultery with Othello. (1.3.330).
Although it is nothing more than a ridiculous rumor, Iago immediately believes it to be true, and
starts to plan his revenge. Once jealousy strikes, he loses all common sense, and doesn t even
