The Moon viewing Blind Man, Easter and Western Thought
Are humans animalistic savages or have we evolved long enough to have shed our animalistic nature?
Has society created separation between individuals so great that we have resorted to our animalistic
nature of fending for ourselves or has it always been there? Questions that make us rethink our stance
on who we really are. In philosophy, the animalist doctrine states that humans are animals in their
essential identity and are persons only through their contingent properties. This idea affects man and
makes us question our own existence and progress in our daily lives. This duality of man, animal and
human aspect such as compassion and thought. can be further extended to Nietzsche idea of the
Apollonian and Dionysian sides of man and the influence this idea had on the development of modern
philosophy pertaining to existentialism. This dichotomy of the multiple sides of man would appear in
the philosophical movement of Edo Neo Confucianism, one of the main philosophy of the later
Azuchi Momoyama period through the Edo period, as well as showing a connection in both eastern
and western philosophy. This idea of the dualism of man is shown in the Kyogen The Moon viewing

Cream both deal with overcoming or facing a death, the poems take contrasting views on how to see
death. Death is subjective and the effects of it change depending on who has passed and who is
experiencing the loss. Death can be portrayed in a positive and negative tone and in a reverent one as
well.
Thomas portrays death in the reverent tone. He is urging the dying to down in flames, to burn as bright
as possible before he or she can no longer burn at all. This is shown through the title, Do not go gentle
into that goodnight , and through the phrases burn and rave and the repeated rave, rave . Thomas is
urging the dying to leave something to be remembered by. He wants them to leave one last mark on
this world.
Stevens contrasts Tomas view on death. Stevens death is frivolous and has no impact on the world. A
common woman has died, and nobody seems to care and that s exactly how Stevens wants use to feel
about it. He seemingly portrays her as a monster to get the point of her not mattering to resonate. The
line horny feet protrude give the deceased undesirable qualities that causes the reader to see her as less
of a person. People bring flowers in last month s newspaper to show that this is not something people
care about. They did not even care enough to give the deceased a vase or glass for her flowers. The

From 1940 to 1980 there were many significant events that shaped America. Events in history are not
defined by how they actually happened but how they were interpreted. Be it by the people of that land
or other lands looking in. In what ways do people receive the important news? News comes through
media outlets such as radio, newspaper and television. Americans especially tend to take things at face
value. This information must be true, I read it in a newspaper. In 1941 Japan attacked Pearl Harbor
and in the coming weeks thanks to newspaper, men and underage boys were lined up in a fury ready to
serve their country and the United States declares war on Japan. In the same year Hitler declares war
on the United States. The United States drops the Atomic bomb and Japan surrenders.
It was not possible to call up a loved one off at war to catch up. In 1948 there was the Berlin Airlift,
and 1949 NATO was established. In 1950 the McCarthy Hearings begin and are wildly popular on
almost every radio station. In 1954 Brown v.Board of Education is decided and the Civil Rights
movement begins to cause a stir in the early 60s. The Cuban Missile Crisis, Kennedy is assassinated,
race riots, Tet offensive, the end o the Vietnam War, Watergate. All newsworthy events, each rich with
detail and the only way the American public knew what was going on half way around the world was
daily broadcasts in the paper and on the radio.
