Book Report On Black Beauty By Anna Sewell
The book Black Beauty by Anna Sewell is a fiction autobiography about the ups and downs of Black
Beauty, a horse in nineteenth Century England. It starts with Beauty s explanation of his life as a colt
in the home of a great master named Farmer Grey. Beauty plays and runs in the meadow and receives
lessons from his mother, Duchess, about the importance of being nice and gentle and never biting or
kicking. When Beauty turns four, Farmer Grey trains him to carry riders on his back and pull
carriages. After being sent to a neighbor s pasture near the train station to get used to the sounds of the
road, Beauty is sold to Squire Gordon at Bertwick Hall. This is where he gets his name; other than a
white star on his forehead and a white

The Cult Of The Second World War For The Soviet Union
The cult of the Second World War for the Soviet Union, Denise Youngblood writes, was heavily
supported during the war years through the medium of film. Of the seventy films produced in the
Soviet Union between 1941 and 1945, 70 percent were focused on subjects directly pertaining to war.
This is an overwhelming percentage of war films when compared with the genre trends of other
European film industries of this time. Youngblood notes, however, that these films often did not depict
frontline battles, or even the homefront itself, as was the tendency of other nations films. The
devastation of the Eastern Front was simply too enormous for cheery Stalinist propaganda to hide, and
Soviet audiences acutely aware of its demoralising reality. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A massive departure from their predecessors in the genre, these post Stalinist films examined war s
effects on the individual level. For example, in The Fate of a Man, Andrei Sokolov s constant
ruminations on war s pointlessness, and his breakdown following his son s death at the front, were
revolutionarily humanistic depictions of war s consequence in Soviet cinema. Another hitherto
avoided theme brought to the forefront by the films of The Thaw was that of war s strains on romantic
relationships. The Cranes are Flying provides an illustrious example of wartime heartache as it
portrays the growing distance between those on the frontline and those they left at home, and
furthermore, the suffering those at home undergo when their loved ones do not return at all. Ivan s
Childhood, one of the last films to be released prior to the Soviet Union s reestablishment of strict
artistic controls in the late 1960 s, tells the story of a twelve year old orphan, Ivan, who works as a
scout for the Red Army. At its core, Ivan s Childhood is the tale of a childhood innocence snatched
away by the grim reality of warfare.
The cult of the Second World War began to be challenged in post Stalinist cinema as war increasingly
became something to be resented as a

Charles Darwin And Alfred Wallace
QXT2 Task 2
Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace like so many of their predecessors made observations of natural
phenomena that inspired proposals of how life on earth evolved, unlike others these men formed
plausible explanations of how the changes in populations occurred without having any knowledge of
Mendelian genetics which was presented in 1868, and provided the micro mechanism for evolution
that Darwin could never explain with his theory of Pangenesis. Rather, based solely on the
observations each made over time observing different species of populations around the world, both
men were able to pen the ideals that would serve as the foundation of the modern theory of evolution.
Both Wallace and Darwin explored the proposals that had been set forth by the likes of Lamarck,
Lyell, and Thomas Malthus. In 1858 the Linnaean Society of London published the contributions of
both Wallace and Darwin, which although had significant differences shared the framework of
proposing decent with modification based on natural selection. The principle of natural selection
provides the rationale of how changes occur in a species over time. It represents the sum total of all
environmental factors exerting pressure on a species. The pressure either benefits an organism that has
a favorable variation; triggering a natural advantage to the survival value of that organism/species, or
either the pressure exposes weaknesses in an organism/species that has unfavorable variations.

The Numbers And Counting System In Ancient Egypt
Numbers and counting systems are used daily by everyone. Numerous civilizations throughout history
like Egypt, Babylonian, Maya and Africa developed a unique number system. They were commonly
used to communicate numbers in an everyday life. Since then counting has changed. A few of the
earlier systems had principles that survived and helped in some way, shape or form to create our
current Hindu Arabic numbering system. It has become widespread. Back in 3000 B.C, ancient Egypt
was using the number system to calculate areas of land, distribute money, and much more. The
Egyptian counting system consisted of hieroglyphs and pictorial signs. The graphic numbers can be of
a person, animal, or plant. The hieroglyphic numbers were a written form of the number system. It
used a decimal base approach. For all the powers of ten, there was a unique symbol. For example, the
number ten was represented as a upside down U , for the number a hundred thousand it was tadpole,
for a million it was represented by a man kneeling with his arms raised. When reading or writing the
number, it is written from right to left. It was written on temples, vases, and stone monuments. The
Egyptians used hieroglyphic numbers to advance in architectural achievements. Math was used to
make historical creations like tombs and pyramids. Greenwald and Thomley agree that the ancient
Egyptians were also aware of fractions, which were primarily written as unit fractions of the form 1⁄n,
such as 1⁄2or 1⁄4...

What Do You Mean By Bringing Your Dog To Work
In the first passage, it describes why bringing your dog to work would be a good idea. Research shows
dogs help bring stress, and anxiety down. They also believe employees would work longer if allowed
to bring dogs to work. Studies show a lot more work gets done with jobs that allow you to bring your
dog. It says in the first passage also, that they believe people would be a lot happier. If people were
happier they would last longer within the company, and not want to quit. Companies would save
money by not having to train, and rehire people. In the second passage it talks about being against
bringing your dog to work. They believe that it would be a bad idea and not everyone is comfortable,
or likes dogs. Another thing is dogs bring germs that may be spread through the workplace.

those issues to work as well? They sometimes make a big mess, and also many dogs shed. The first

Maternity Leave Case Study
Many of these different employment laws interested me, however, the Family and Medical Leave Act
caught my eye. This is because I have a family member who just recently birthed a child. She received
the required amount of 12 weeks of maternity leave, as well as being granted an extra 6 weeks
additionally. So this kind of law made sense for me. Now just a little background on this employment
law, it was enacted in 1993 by President Bill Clinton. The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993
allows employees who have worked for a company for 1 year or more to apply for a period of unpaid
leave with no fear of losing their job. The law can be beneficial to an employee whose family member

employer over the Federal Family and Medical Leave Act takes place in the northern Indiana city of
Elkhart, Indiana. This case is officially referred to as Gilliam vs. United Parcel Service Inc., handed
down on November 29th, 2000. The court case document, that notes Gilliam, in full as Reginald
Gilliam, assumed that the Family and Medical Leave Act licensed him to be able to up to 120 days off
of work without obtaining any penalty. Mr. Gilliam also believed that he did not have to advise his
current employer of his schedule of return to work. There was apparently a miscommunication of
words between Mr. Gilliam and Mr. Gilliam s supervisor about the amount of time that Mr. Gilliam
would be out of the workplace for. This therefore created confusion and disagreements, leading to a
U.S. Circuit Courts decision. All in all, the court confirmed the official accord of Judge Robert L.
Miller. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana and Judge Miller had their rulings
upheld, stating that Mr. Gilliam has the full responsibility to inform the company at least 30 days prior
to beginning the requested leave period. Mr. Gilliam failed to fulfill his legal obligations under the
Family and Medical Leave Act and therefore will now reap the repercussions of his failure to abide by

Robert Dahl Pluralism
Robert Dahl in Dilemmas of Pluralist Democracy (1982) realizes that there are several issues to
understanding the term democracy and the antiquated meaning that it has. In this reading, Dahl also
addresses domination and how power and its influence are allocated in the political process through
interest groups and organized political parties. On the first concept, Dahl attempts to give democracy a
more adequate meaning to the modern world. He coins the term Polyarchy where society tries to
implement democracy in large scale governments, also known as countries. (pg. 131) This is Dahl s
response to knowing that in all democratized countries there are organizations or independent factions
that exist. For Dahl this freedom to assemble is known as a pluralist democracy and shows that a
country that is exercising democratic pluralism is one where polyarchy and important groups are
autonomous. Pg. 132 As a result, Dahl concludes that any country that is democratic is considered a
pluralist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He sets a criteria based on his observations of the ideals of Democracy. These ideals consist of 5
qualities that must exist in order for a democracy to function. In his observations he identifies the
following: 1. Equality in voting, 2. Effective participation, 3. Enlightened understanding, 4. Final
control over the agenda, and 5. Inclusion. Dahl then discovers a dilemma in pluralist democracy. This
dilemma is in understanding that people aren t autonomous if their decision making process fails to
satisfy the criteria above and that also if the political process were to meet the criteria in its entirety.
Then people ironically could not govern themselves as a result. (pg. 133) Dahl s critique is that since
democracy is related to the idea of people being autonomous, then therefore a decision making
process can only be democratic if and only if it meets these criteria. (pg.

The Smoke Signals Forgiveness Essay
The Smoke Signals Forgiveness
Smoke Signals, written by Sherman Alexie and directed by Chris Eyre, begins on July 4, 1976 on the
Coeur d Alene Reservation. Arnold Joseph (Gary Farmer), drunk while celebrating the independence ,
lit off a firework and set the Builds the Fire residence on fire, killing the parents of Thomas Builds the
Fire. Many people were already asleep in the house when the fire started, so no one saw Arnold s
mistake, which he kept a secret from the whole reservation. Both Thomas Builds the Fire (Evan

that Arnold had died and that someone should probably come down to Phoenix to take care of the
death. This meant that Victor had to take a bus to Phoenix to get Arnold s possessions and drive his
truck back to the reservation. There was just one problem, Victor didn t have the money for a bus pass,
but Thomas did. The catch was, if Thomas gave Victor some money to go to Phoenix, Thomas got to
come along too. Victor had no other choice but to accept the offer. And the journey begins.
Victor and Thomas had never been off the reservation before. They experienced what it s really like to
be a Native American in the real world. On the bus ride there, two white men took their seats and
made rude comments about them being Native Americans. They received a lot of stares and
uncomfortable looks from people as well. The bus ride to Phoenix was hard for Victor because he had
to deal with Thomas talking the whole time. Victor especially didn t like it when Thomas brought up
his father in conversation.
In Phoenix, Thomas and Victor walked many miles through the desert to get to Arnold s old trailer.
Suzy Song lived in a trailer there as well. They met Suzy right away, and she was very helpful. She

Persuasive Essay On Cheating On Homework
In Survey I, 91.9% of the participants reported that they have cheated on at least one homework
assignment; however, when asked why they receive answers, 13.5% of the participants stated that they
do not receive answers (Appendix D). Therefore, it can be concluded that some students believe that
cheating on homework assignments is not considered as immoral. This may further explain why
students cheat.
Furthermore, 91.9% of students reported cheating at least once, albeit 51.4% of students stating that it
s bothersome when others cheat (Appendix D). This is due to self serving bias, which is when people
blame other individuals when their action negatively affects them, while they blame the situation
when their act negatively affects others (Boyes, 2013). For example, if someone gets into a car
accident, one automatically assumes that person is a bad driver, while if one gets into a car accident
himself, one will find excuses and say it was not their own fault. Similarly, when a student cheats in
high school, they find reasons to justify that action, even when they know it is wrong, which is the
case with 62.2% of students in this survey (Appendix D). However, when another student cheats in the
same class, it is bothersome to some students because they see it as unfair and disrespectful on the
student s part.
Moreover, 24.3% of students reported that they cheat because they want to help their friends out
(Appendix D). Therefore, when they see others, who are not their friend

A Comparison Between Sodium Thisulfate And Carbonic Acid
The sodium cation did not have an effect on pH. We tested sodium acetate, sodium carbonate, sodium

sodium iodide, and sodium hydroxide. The pHs of these compounds ranged from 1.25 to 13.00, which
were sodium bisulfate and sodium hydroxide, respectively. Sodium bisulfite and sodium carbonate
had average measured pHs of 4.24 and 11.13, respectively. Since this range is so wide, we can

For a pool to be usable to swim in, it must be at a certain pH. If a pool is too basic or too acidic, then
this can cause some serious health issues to that particular person. Most people monitor the pH to be at
7.5 to get the most effectiveness of sanitation. Another application where pH is important is when
studying the stomach. The human stomach contains gastric acid, which is used to break down food
particles. This is beneficial with digestion but can cause problems such as heartburn. Heartburn occurs
when the gastric acid in one s stomach goes back up to the esophagus. This can be counteracted
however by using a basic substance such as Tums. The base will then make the solution in the
esophagus neutral and relieve the person of their heartburn. D) If all 23 compounds had the same
concentration, we believe that Nitric Acid would have the lowest pH. For the highest pH, we think it
would be very close between Potassium Hydroxide and Sodium Hydroxide. We believe these
compounds would be the highest and lowest because of the fact that they are strong acids and bases.
Strong acids and bases completely ionize when put into a solution in water, because of the

Food Deserts in Chicago
Background
Healthy eating is vital to eliminating sickness and diseases in one s life. Many people suffer from
diabetes, obesity, heart conditions, and high blood pressure because of improper eating habits. To a
degree, most of these eating habits are related to limited access to produce healthy foods. The
increasing amount of food deserts and lack of family income contributes to African American obesity
rates, and lack of healthy choices. Ironically, these food desserts reside in communities plagued by
poverty. These income restrictions also add to the problems that are part of being in a food desert.
Literature Review
Mari Gallagher(2006). Examining the Impact of Food Deserts on Public Health in Chicago
Food deserts are places where healthy foods are not produced nor sold. Unfortunately, Chicago is
filled with food deserts. Approximately 600,000 people reside in areas that consist of food deserts
(Gallagher, 2006). Nearly 200,000 of those people are children. These children do not have the
opportunity for healthier options, which shows an increase in obesity rates (News One Staff, 2011).
There are 77 Chicago communities and out of that 77, 23 are food deserts (Gallagher, 2006).
Chicagoans particularly the black communities are forced to live off the accessible food that is near
them. The food deserts are in Austin, North Lawndale, Armour Square, Near South Side, Fuller Park,
Grand Boulevard, Washington Park, Woodlawn, West Lawn, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Ashburn,

When one hears the name Canada the first thoughts to come into one s head is cold, a boot, polar bears
but most of all freedom. Canada has been known to be a free country for as long as anyone can

A main part of the constitution is the charter of rights and freedoms added by Pierre Trudeau prime

how to amend the constitution. It was passed and added to the Canadian constitution in 1982.

Enzymes Essay
Enzymes
Enzymes are biological catalysts that carry out thousands of chemical reactions that occur in living
cells. They are a class of proteins that have a unique three dimensional structure that allows it to bind
with a specific substrate to facilitate a
reaction. Many biological reactions will not occur spontaneously in the cell; there is simply not
enough energy for the reaction to take place. Enzymes make these
reactions possible by lowering the reaction s activation energy. Each cell has tens of thousands of
different enzymes that collectively allow both the break down and synthesis of molecules to drive all
cellular processes.
This investigation will explore the effect of pH ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These biological catalysts are important because they speed up the rate of the reaction they catalyze
that would otherwise be too slow to support life. Catalase is an enzyme present in the cells of plants,
animals and aerobic (oxygen requiring) bacteria. It promotes the conversion of hydrogen peroxide, a
powerful and potentially harmful oxidizing agent, to water and molecular oxygen.
2H2O2 to 2H2O + O2
Catalase also uses hydrogen peroxide to oxidize toxins including phenols, formic acid, formaldehyde
and alcohols.
H2O2 + RH2 to 2H2O + R
Where is it found and what does it do?
Catalase is located in a cell organelle called the peroxisome. Peroxisomes in animal cells are involved
in the oxidation of fatty acids, and the synthesis of cholesterol and bile acids. Hydrogen peroxide is a
byproduct of fatty acid oxidation. White blood cells produce hydrogen peroxide to kill bacteria. In
both cases catalase prevents the hydrogen peroxide from harming the cell itself. Peroxisomes in plant
cells are involved in photorespiration (the use of oxygen and production of carbon dioxide) and
symbiotic nitrogen fixation (the breaking apart of the nitrogen molecule N2 to reactive nitrogen
atoms). Hydrogen peroxide is produced as an intermediate during these chemical

The Dark Side Of Chocolate
The Dark Side of Chocolate is a documentary that explores the underlying issues prevalent in the
cocoa trade. For most first world countries chocolate is seen as an accessible treat, however in third
world countries, the production of cocoa creates social issues that must be eliminated. Cocoa trade is
one of the largest industries in West African countries, but the issues that arise from such trade do
more harm than good. The cocoa plantations are trafficking humans to work on their plantations.
Furthermore, most instances suggest that these workers do not receive any compensation for their
work and most importantly some of these slave laborers are children. Thus, the three issues that the
cocoa companies routinely commit in exchange for lower costs are human trafficking, slave labor, and
child labor. These companies are aware of such issues but refuse to actively combat them because they
are better off financially. It can be argued that these issues can be mitigated through various social,

Frankenstein, By Mary Shelley And Parable Of The Sower By...
And the Destiny of Earthseed is to take root among the stars. (Butler 77) The books Frankenstein by
Mary Shelley and Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler are both science fiction novels warning
of a dangerous potential future. Frankenstein looks at the dangers of creating artificially intelligent
beings, while Parable of the Sower explores human savagery in the collapse of American civilization
as the result of poor political decisions. Each addresses concerns of the time they were published.
While both are pessimistic views of the future and both require the suspension of disbelief, the
concept of dystopia and utopia is definitely apparent in both novels. A dystopia being a world in which
nothing is perfect and a utopia being a perfect world. Frankenstein addresses a timeless issue that
modern science may soon make a reality, while Parable of the Sower creates an alarming depiction of
conservative leadership.
Frankenstein is an early depiction of the creation of artificial intelligence, an idea with great
significance today. While artificially intelligent beings such as golems exist in myth as the product of
magic, scientific progress has the true potential to make such beings. In modern times, the subject is
frequently discussed with regard to computers being programmed to think, in an imitation of the
human brain. In Frankenstein, the medium used is recycled human body parts stitched together to
create a new human like entity. Whether or not this entity,

When People Talk About How Fast Technology Is Evolving
When people talk about how fast technology is evolving in our world today, an important factor that
has come into play because of the way people exploit technology is cybersecurity. There are several
directions that cybersecurity has gone in affecting the world. Most recent the past election and how
another country determined the outcome of that election by gaining online contact. There are several
flaws that have happened with current cybersecurity, but it can still be a good thing if better solutions
are put into place, and if more cybersecurity analyst take their responsibilities more seriously. Those
responsibilities can range from dealing with an incoming cyber attack, and setting up protection for
businesses that have important data. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In general, technology is never perfect, and that is why it is important that people become more
informed about cybersecurity. In the online Academic Journal Building Cybersecurity Awareness: The
need for evidence based framing strategies. By Hans de Bruijn and Marijn Janssen. Hans de Bruijn
states Almost everybody has heard of cybersecurity, however, the urgency and behavior of persons do
not reflect high level of awareness. The internet is all too often considered as a safe environment for
sharing information, transactions and controlling the physical world, yet cyberwars are already
ongoing and there is an urgent need to be better prepared. That just shows how in reality we as a
society are not looking at the bigger picture. We worry less about how with a push of a button tons of
information can be stolen or even erased. As Hans mentioned cyberwars are happening in front of us
without us realizing it. That is why as a society with access to a great deal of technology people need
to be more aware of cybersecurity. There are many ways that the public can be made aware of it. One
of those ways is to show actual evidence to people who tend to prioritize technology, and the online
network instead of just giving them a warning. That way awareness can spread on how to be prepared
in case that person is a target in the future. Another academic article Cyber security for home users: A

Women s Rights During The Seneca Falls
My dearest James,
Being at the convention in Seneca Falls, New York has caused me to look back on our time in
England. I had such a wonderful time on my first trip abroad to England with you. The mistreatment
the other women and I faced not being allowed to fully participate showed me the important issues of
women s rights. Despite the hardships we faced at the General Anti slavery Convention meeting
Elizabeth Stanton was wonderful. I believe working with her will help my cause and determination to
have equality for all women. Her work at this convention is truly inspirational. Her initiating and
desire for women suffrage is powerful and shows her great leadership. She also started with

will see this document in a positive and empowering light. I hope this first convention will inspire
other all around to seek out the unjust ways currently. I hope one day our wonderful children will
support and follow in my footsteps of supporting the rights of women. There is no matter of
misconception regarding the document s demands put further by our needs. Although I fear people
will not take the document seriously, and will look badly towards the movement. I think my next
venture will be starting to write a book to show the need for equal rights of women. I can not wait to

Compare And Contrast The Rise And Fall Of The Han Dynasty
The Hans and The Romans were two of the strongest civilizations in the history of the world.
Although they were very strong, they still had to fall eventually. The fall of the Han Dynasty happened
around 220 CE, whereas The Roman Empire s fall happened around 476 CE. These civilizations both
went through times of peace throughout their reigns that allowed them to strive. The Han Dynasty s
time of peace was called The Golden Age, and it lasted much longer than Rome s, which was called
Pax Romana. The decline of these civilizations share a lot of similarities, such as their internal and
external factors. Although the causes of their falls were very similar, there were still some aspects that
were different, such as the effects of their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The biggest and most impactful external factor was disease. This happened to both civilizations
because of trade on The Silk Road. Foreigners helped spread measles and smallpox into their empire s
causing mass amounts of casualties, approximately ⅓ to ¼ of their civilizations. This was huge
because this affected trade, killing the economy, and also made it very hard to find and recruit soldiers
to participate in the military. Another major factor was the invasions of outside groups. Both
civilizations were invaded by some form of the Huns. Rome was invaded by the Huns who were led
by Attila, a very strong leader, but were mainly affected by Germanic invasions, and The Han was
invaded by the Xiongnu. Although neither Rome nor The Han s actually fell from these invasions they
were still both very impactful and were major reasons for their falls. There were only a couple of
external factors for the falls of the Roman Empire and The Han Dynasty, but they were very impactful
and devastating. Even though the Han Dynasty and the Roman Empire had many similar causes that
led to their falls, the effects were not similar at all. One major difference in the falls was the fact that
only half of the Roman Empire fell whereas the whole Han Dynasty fell. The Han Dynasty would
become decentralized because the whole thing collapsed, and it would not become centralized again
for approximately 350 years. This differs from Rome because they became decentralized and never
truly became

An Examination Of How Music Mirrors Societal Issues
An Examination of How Music Mirrors Societal Issues
Perspectives of Institutionalized Racism Although the United States government is currently engaged
in stopping foreign civil rights atrocities, it turns a blind eye to violence acted out against African
Americans within its borders (PR N., 2014, para. 4). In South Carolina, the rebel flag hang[s] from the
state house walls (Bryan, 1994, line 2), serving as a constant reminder of the institutionalized racism
that reflects U.S. social tensions today. Another discriminatory racial injustice that occurred during the

4). Not only is racial tension portrayed through brutality and violence, but it is also apparent in various
aspects of public education such as unfair character labeling, racial stereotypes, harsh school
punishments, and discrimination from teachers. These inequalities present in what is supposed to be a
color blind society create the notion that America does not love [all] children (Manzama, 2015, p. 11)
and engender distrust in the education system. Moreover, impoverished minorities feel a sense of
resentment as a result of discrimination based on economic racism and injustice. These minorities tend
to rebel when they can no longer bear the weight of their anger and they believe the sentiment favours
change (Chavis, 2015, p. 4). Thus we discover that throughout the history of the United States, racism
has played a factor, ingraining its malicious effects into the moral fiber of American Society.
Historical Perspectives
Several aspects of racial prejudice today, demonstrated in both police brutality and unjust treatment of
minorities, evidence atrocities that can be linked to a national history of violence and resentment
towards one another. To take racism back to when freedom seemed achievable is to travel back to the
Civil Rights Act of 1960s which sparked national controversy not exclusively in the South. The
modern interpretation of this backlash is most accurately portrayed in the movie Selma, in which

Essay Sustainability of the Intersection in Ontario, Canada
The signalized intersection between Highway 12 and Pine Street in Ontario, Canada has been facing
some challenges in its current design. Therefore, future analysis and design of the intersection should
incorporate a suitable sustainability indicator to ensure that the intersection remains functional as a
long term solution. Perhaps the most important sustainability indicators for the intersection s future
analysis or evaluation should be traffic demand together with the future population (Litman 12). These
sustainability indicators will ensure that the intersection remains safe and performs at an optimum
level for the future based on how it is designed today.
The most significant challenge that the intersection has been facing is the ... Show more content on

This has led to loss of fuel, energy and time when vehicles, especially trucks, wait for their chance to
clear the intersection. This is because drivers have to keep their vehicle engines on unnecessarily at
the intersection. In addition, this challenge has led to increased travel costs due to reduced
accessibility of vehicles to their destinations in time. The vehicular delays are even high during peak
hours in this intersection. Therefore, future evaluation of the intersection should consider congestion
and mobility as the most important design challenge. However, in the evaluation of congestion
reducing design strategies, civil engineers should adopt sustainable mechanisms. For example, design
mechanisms that increase diversity in the transport system such as transit improvement will increase
sustainability. On the other hand, those designs that increase the population of traffic such as
expansion of the intersection may reduce sustainability. To increase sustainability, civil engineers
should consider reliability and transport expenditures in the new design. The current design of the
intersection is unsustainable due to improper timing of the traffic signals. There should be some
regulations to the current traffic signals to avoid long delays in traffic (Kockelman and Shabih 17).
Mobility barriers at the intersection can result to a slow response to emergencies. Therefore, the
timing of traffic lights at the

Benefits of the Industrial Revolution
The Second Industrial Revolution was sparked by the creation of the railroad. During the Civil War,
railroads existed and were helpful in bringing supplies to troops, but they weren t very reliable as they
would only go on for as long as the owner of the railroad had land. When the owner of the railroad ran
out of land, the railroad would end, and people would have to move the things from the railroad to
another railroad. People did realize, however, how well a railroad could work if they were all
connected. They found that they could make money from the people using their railroad and riding on
the trains, and soon people connected their local railroads together. Railroad barons, like Cornelius

J.P. Morgan was the leader in the banking industry. In the 1890 s Morgan and his friends invested
money in the stock of troubled corporations. They won seats on the boards of directors because they
were stock holders and from there they directed companies in a way that avoided competition and
made money. Morgan ended up gaining control of most of the nations major rail lines. Then he began
to buy up steel companies and he put them together into one large corporation. By 1901, Morgan was
the head of the United States Steel Company (which included Carnegie Steel) and this was the first

Round Trip Copper Reactions Lab
The purpose of this lab was to evaluate our skills of decanting a supernatant liquid without losing the
solid and successful completion of a series of reactions. This was done through five chemical reactions
involving copper. In this lab, elemental copper was put through five different chemical reactions in
order to convert it into different compounds. By the end of the fifth reaction, the copper was back to
its elemental state. In the first reaction, 0.95 g of pure copper was reacted with 4.0 mL of concentrated
nitric acid under the fume hood. The solution was swirled until all of the copper had dissolved. The
balanced equation for this reaction is as follows:

The black precipitate was allowed to settle and then the supernatant, the clear liquid that lies above a
precipitate, was decanted, or poured carefully off. Then, 200 mL of hot distilled water was added and
the precipitate was allowed to settle to repeat the decanting process again. In the fourth reaction, 15
mL of 6.0 M sulfuric acid was added to the copper (II) oxide while stirring. The balanced equation for
this reaction is as follows:
CuO (s) + H2SO4 (aq) à CuSO4 (aq) + H2O (l) + SO2 (g)
When the sulfuric acid was added to copper (II) oxide, the solution turned blue. This was due to the
formation of aqueous copper (II) sulfate, which produced the copper ions to change the color of the
solution. In the fifth reaction, 2.29 g of zinc was added to the copper (II) sulfate solution under the
fume hood. The balanced equation for this reaction is written as followed:
Zn (s) + CuSO4 (aq) à ZnSO4 (aq) + Cu (s)
When the zinc was added to the copper (II) sulfate solution, the solution started to bubble. As the
solution was stirred, it turned a cloudy blue. Small flecks of a brown solid were visible. As the
solution became colorless, the brown solid settled to the bottom of the beaker. The solid formed was
copper in its elemental state. The color faded from the solution as the copper ions slowly formed into
solid copper. The copper was poured into a funnel with filter paper and washed three times with 25

Essay about Describing Dunkirk
Describing Dunkirk On the 20th May 1940the allied troops were trapped by the Germans on the
Northern coast of France. The allies consisted of the British Expeditionary Force (B.E.F), the Belgian
Army and the ten best divisions of the French Army. It was on this day that Churchill gave the
command for the evacuation to take place, to Britain by ship, following advice from Lord Gort (leader
of the B.E.F). Rommel was advancing from the north and Degaudier from the south trapping the
troops. The evacuation was organised by Admiral Ramsey and codenamed Operation Dynamo with
the main objective to rescue as much of the B.E.F as possible. This evacuation began on May 27th
from the beaches of Dunkirk. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An important factor in arguing Dunkirk as a defeat is that 68,111 men from the B.E.F were killed,
wounded or taken prisoner during the evacuation. The cost of replacing the B.E.F s equipment would
be astronomical for the government and for their part in the evacuation the Navy suffered 243 ships
sunken (including 6 important British destroyers with 19 left damaged) and the RAF lost 474 aircraft.
Source 3 supports the view of Dunkirk as a British military defeat. It is a photographic source showing
Dunkirk after the evacuation displaying a deserted beach littered with equipment, corpses and debris.
Off the shore are broken half sunken ships with those that have become beached, one possibly a
military boat and also many smaller vessels. The photograph of the dead soldiers shows military
defeat as the objective was to rescue the B.E.F and would be very demoralising for the British public.
The large boat could belong to the navy and would be very valuable, loss of this would be very
expensive, along with the rest of the abandoned equipment. The source seems reliable as it is first
hand primary evidence. It is useful for showing defeat as it displays what it looked like at Dunkirk
after the evacuation. Its also backs up my own knowledge as the B.E.F lost 68,111 men and you would
expect bodies on the beaches where

Environment And DAPL Lectures
For my event immersion, I chose to attend two different lectures. Specifically, the power of
knowledge: higher education, reintegration and liberation, as well as the environment/DAPL lecture.
Both lectures served as a reminder of what is necessary towards a focus on education in society. I
decided to look at both lectures because of my interest in how the two potentially collide based off an
interesting that I had personally. Socialization is one aspect of the conversation that does not
necessarily come forth, but holds a large degree of relevance.
The significance of these lectures is that they all revolve around a need for people to be more

The issue here is based on the fact that socialization ultimately works in hand with education and it
applies the identities. That is, Harro (2008) found that identities are ascribed to us at birth through no
effort or decision or choice of our own (p. 46). Considering this, it becomes increasingly difficult to
create a us vs them scenario. When in reality, it is two groups of people who have grown up believing
two different ideologies, and there is not really any type of dynamic change that is associated with this
conversation. The contrast of these two conversations only add to the ongoing understanding of how
difficult it is to have a difference if any. The more important conversation that is occurring here is
ultimately how can one bridge the gap of knowledge and conversation that is occurring here.
Society currently stands at odds due in part to the fact that there is a gap in knowledge and
socialization is at the heart of it. In the instances provided by both lecturers, they are tied by the fact
that there is no real manner upon which their issues can be resolved because socialization ultimately
acts as the judge and jury. They are both looking to bridge the gap between the two parties at odds that
have developed. However, as Harro stated, there isn t a realistic solution due in part to the fact that

Lydia Davis And Marge Piercy
The human species is strange. And it is very hard for one to understand another, yet it is harder for a
human to understand oneself. Lydia Davis and Marge Piercy use Head, Heart and Barbie Doll to
express to readers two different internal struggles that people have. Davis and Piercy both use strong
diction to express the internal fights that humanity has within themselves. Both Davis and Piercy also
use free verse to tell their poems and to get their point across. In Head, Heart , Lydia Davis gets right
to the point with her poem. Her poem is only ten lines long but in those ten lines she uses short
sentences and multiple forms of punctuation. In Head, Heart , Davis writes about the internal fight
between the speakers heart and the speakers head. Davis uses metonymy in her writing. The head to

is that these things do actually happen to people. And this is a major issue in society as a whole. The
writer tells a story of a girl who is born just like any other girl but grows into this body that is so

Essay on Accounting Case 09-3
CASE 09 3: Venturing into Consolidation
Provided Case 09 3, we, Group 7 have dutifully researched the topic, using resources at our disposal
to formulate a consistent, clear and legal response. The following submission outlines the case, our
conclusions with supporting evidence and the accounting issues present in the subject.
FACTS:
Case 09 3: Venturing into Consolidation details the ongoings and pertinent information of the joint
venture of DeviceCo, and Pharmador branded LeaseMed. The joint venture LeaseMed has been
created to operate as a medical equipment leasing entity. The joint venture is overseen by a board of
directors composed of six members with three representatives from both parent companies. The joint

Variable Interest Entities (VIEs) are addressed in ASC 810 10 15 with a subtopic addressing VIEs.
ASC 810 15 17(d) states the criteria to be considered in determining if a VIE qualifies for the business
scope exception [1]. These criteria are paraphrased in the latter of this analysis.
Per the guidance in ASC 810 15 17(d), in order for DeviceCo or Pharmador to qualify for the business
scope exception, LeaseMed must be first deemed a business. ASC 805 10 20 defines a business as an
integrated set of activities and assets that is capable of being conducted and managed for the purpose
of providing a return... directly to investors or other owners, members, or participants. LeaseMed fits
this definition in reference to its investors, DeviceCo and Pharmador. ASC 810 15 17(d) also gives
four criteria, which the involved parties must not meet, in order to qualify for the business scope
exception. The criteria and the analysis corresponding analysis are below:
1. The reporting entity participates in the design or redesign of the VIE. Except in the case of a joint
venture in the joint control of the reporting entity and at least one other party.
Analysis: Both DeviceCo and Pharmador do not meet this criterion since LeaseMed is a joint venture
and is therefore exempt.
2. The VIE conducts business on behalf

Fed Ex vs UPS Case Analysis Essay examples
Executive Summery
The parcel service industry is made up of four main competitors. These competitors are UPS, FedEx,
Airborne Express, and the U.S. Postal Service. Since 2000, American consumers have spent more than
$50 billion to ship parcels, packages, and overnight letters. New parcel distribution patterns developed
due to the way U.S. manufacturing companies are operating. The Internet has expanded the reach of
direct marketing, particularly with retail transactions requiring home delivery. Globalization has also
created the need for parcel carriers to expand worldwide.
UPS and FedEx are the leading parcel carriers in the U.S. FedEx has significantly expanded their

Manufactures also depended more on the customer, information technology, and the increase in the
use of technology in all parts of the economy. Companies such as FedEx, UPS, Airborne Express, and
USPS shipped parcels at a faster rate and were more reliable than other rail, motor, and water carriers.
Trends and opportunities of the parcel service industry include globalization, e commerce, and supply
chain management. Internet logistics was FedEx and UPS s fastest growing business. The internet
enabled customers to link directly to retailers and their manufacturers. In 2001, parcel carriers served
almost all of the online market. They were able to provide information on packages to customers
through tracking systems on the web. This allowed customers to plan ahead and decrease delays in
deliveries. It also allowed for faster transactions and lower communication costs. Parcel companies
created partnerships with large Internet retailers. These partnerships allowed parcel service companies
to expand its overall delivery volume. Parcel companies improved tracking by implementing several
technological innovations. These included laser scanners and bar codes, state of the art software
programs, satellite and cell phone communication equipment, electronic information interchanges, and
the Internet.
Globalization is another major trend. Since the emergence of the

What Is The Detrimental Nature Of The Prison System
One of the greatest emphases that Victor Hugo enlightens in Les Miserables is the detrimental nature
of the prison system. During the time Les Miserables was penned, a vast amount of issues plagued the
prison system, and many of them are touched on in the novel. The prison system was structurally and
functionally crumbling during the time of Les Miserables; from excessive punishment to skewed
workforce, even the miserable living/working conditions for the convicts. Hugo emphasizes countless
other issues throughout the novel, but these three are constantly referenced and expanded upon. The
primary issue undermining the entire novel, excessive punishment, is the key reason as to why the
prison system is the way it is. Throughout Les Miserables many of the convicts are subject to
excessive punishment. Working in the galleys would not be acceptable in ... Show more content on

Javert has been tailing Jean Valjean ever since he left the galleys a free man. I found myself asking
questions along the lines of What does Javert do all day? Doesn t this guy have anything else to do
except chase a former convict all over France? This frustrated me throughout the novel because
instead of examining the problems with the prison system, we have people wasting years and lots of
time and money pursing a convict that was unfairly sentenced in the first place for a petty crime, and
ended up on death row for something that should have been a fine and maybe one year of jail time at
the maximum. Javert sums this up in his dialogue with Valjean in the movie. Now prisoner 24601,
your time is up and your parole s begun. You know what that means? Yes, it means I m free. No.
Follow to the letter your itinerary, this badge of shame you wear until you die. It warns that you re a
dangerous man. (Les Miserables Movie Musical). Javert has no clue that what he is working on is a
total waste of

Mammita s Garden Cove Essay
Mammita s Garden Cove
In Mammita s Garden Cove by Cyril Dabydeen, the author uses the literary techniques questions,
tone, and flashbacks to convey the main characters view on place. Max believes that he will have
better opportunities in Canada rather than in his home country. This short story details his views on his
life at this point, and how he is doing in Canada.
The prompt immediately begins with the question, Where d you come from? . This tells the reader that
Max is not from the current country or setting in which the story takes place. Throughout the passage,
there is only three questions, the aforementioned one, another in the first paragraph, How couldn t it
be? , and another in the second paragraph, Was it that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He even finds himself wanting to laugh at his situation. After this, he goes into a reminiscing and even
happy tone about what he thought life in Canada would be like. He states he used to dream of Canada
and of the opportunities of a new life outside of his homeland. He recalled how he planned to get
married, have children, begin a family with a house, maybe even a cottage on the edge of the city.
Middle class was his goal, he d provide for his family, a stark difference from the hard to mouth life he
was used to. But then, all too quickly, this daydream is ripped from him as his feet pressed to asphalt,
continuing his never ending search for a job. With each step, he finds his sense of revulsion
increasing, and thus begins his doubts. He wonders if he was really happy on the island, happier than
he even realized before reaching Canada. Again, reality tears him from his regrets and hopes and he
knew he needed to find a job or he will starve. His tone quickly takes a sharp turn into humorous
denial, perhaps another past thought of what he thought life in Canada would be like; No one starved
in Canada; that only happened in such places as India or Africa. But definitely not Canada! For a third
time, the reality of his starving, growling stomach brings him back to his current, unfortunate
situation, in which he becomes slightly panicked at the prospect of actually not getting a meal that
night. He suddenly feels out of place,

How Does Rip Van Winkle Affect Society
Washington Irving wrote Rip Van Winkle in 1819 around the time of the American Revolution. British
ruled the colonies and they were so determined to break free. The period prior to the revolution and
after was evident with change. The society altered in extreme shared, political and analytical aspects.
Freedom to do as they wanted was their main objective. One could easily compare this time period to
the story of Rip Van Winkle. This is a story about change and transformation. The story revolves
around a family man known as Rip and his demanding wife Dame. Rip had no desire to do any
constructive work because he was a pretty happy mortal that didn t take very much serious, and would
rather starve than work for a penny. (Irving 32) Instead, he preferred to have fun with the children and
socialize with the neighbors helping them with their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She would get angry at all he did and it would lead him on his mini trips searching for refuge. One
could compare his wife to that of England and Rip would be considered America being forced away.
One particular day, he strolled in to the mountains with his gun and dog Wolf to get away from his
nagging wife Dame. While in the mountains he was approached by a short hairy old guy that offered
him some liquor, but was only allowed to drink upon arrival of other guests. Rip couldn t sustain the
wait and tempted to taste the beverage and kept going back for more. He eventually got drunk and fell
asleep for 20 years. When he finally woke up, he had grown old, but didn t realize this. He thought he
had only been a sleep for one night and had been robbed. On his way back to town he was thinking of
excuses to tell his wife for not coming home all night. On his way back to the village, he began to

Symbols In John Irving s A Prayer For Owen Meany
There are numerous symbols that John Irving incorporated into A Prayer for Owen Meany. While
some symbols only appear in the novel once, other symbols happen to recur throughout the novel.
Such recurring symbols are the several manifestations of armless figures, which are Tabby s
dressmaker s dummy, the armadillo, and the statue of Mary Magdalene. The most significant
manifestation of the armless figures is Tabby s dressmaker s dummy since its symbolism of Tabby
primarily contributes to the reader s understanding of Owen s belief that he was God s instrument, as
well as the overall theme of predestination. Tabby s dressmaker s dummy was first introduced in
chapter three, The Angel . One of the first things that John reveals about it ... Show more content on

According to John, the dressmaker s dummy was an exact replica of Tabby s body, therefore it can be
assumed that it symbolizes Tabby herself. Tabby is significant to the novel because she contributes to
the reader s understanding of Owen s belief that he was God s instrument. The novel circulates around
Owen s belief that he was God s instrument and the accident involving Tabby s death emphasized this
belief, thus enabling readers to really grasp what Owen meant by being God s instrument. Since
disturbing the angel, Owen felt it was his destiny to aid in Tabby s death, thus aiding in an act that
God destined to happen. Owen saw the accident as God acting through him to make the task happen,
which is exactly what Owen means by being God s instrument. Tabby s character also contributes to
the overall theme of predestination because her death is what Owen believed was supposed to happen,
that s why he didn t feel guilty about the baseball striking her left temple. Furthermore, the
armlessness of the dressmaker s dummy foreshadows to Owen s predestined death when he loses his
arms by the grenade.Without Tabby s presence in the novel, Owen s poof for being God s instrument
and his belief in predestination would not be visible to the others living in Gravesend, including John.
Owen s beliefs impacted many individuals, especially John and the

Camillo s Contradictions
Most will agree that in The Winter s Tale, Camillo is one of the many complex and ambivalent
characters in the play. This is because Camillo s character seems to show contradictions both in his
actions and his speech. Camillo s doubleness raises the question of whether his contradictions are
rooted in honesty and morality or selfishness and disloyalty. I would argue that his contradictions
reflect a dissonance between what he believes and what he is asked to do by his superiors and not a
display of duplicity.
As I watched the Public Theater s Mobile Shakespeare Unit production of The Winter s Tale at The
Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center on Wednesday, November 15, my
understanding of Camillo was amplified and my previous claim reaffirmed. Camillo had no choice but
to obey his superiors and his conscience throughout the play. Camillo s acts of disobedience,
manipulation or deceitfulness might seem like acts of selfishness and disloyalty, but I disagree.
Through Joseph Hall s descriptions of The Character of the Wise Man , Of the Honest Man and Of the
Valiant Man in his Characters of virtues and vices, it is evident that Camillo is a virtuous man and that
his acts were a manifestation of his loyalty to what he believed was right and honorable. Thus, through
this angle, Camillo s behavior is in fact constant throughout the play even when it appears
contradictory.
Before I had watched the play, I had believed that Camillo had been the alternative of Leontes and
Polixenes because even as a servant of both kings, he displayed more nobility and wisdom; yet still a
shred of doubt planted by classmates lurked in my mind. Were his intensions to be selfish and were
they predetermined? Was he not trustworthy and loyal? Was he treacherous? Did he deserve
punishment? These questions joggled in my head as the play began and I waited intently for Camillo s
depiction. At the same time, I held on to my first expectations of Camillo. I had thought he would be
portraited as an honorable person with good judgement, but I was not sure what to expect when it
came to the portrayal of his contradicting behavior. If he loved the kings and was honorable, then why
would he betray them when this was considered a

  • 2. Book Report On Black Beauty By Anna Sewell The book Black Beauty by Anna Sewell is a fiction autobiography about the ups and downs of Black Beauty, a horse in nineteenth Century England. It starts with Beauty s explanation of his life as a colt in the home of a great master named Farmer Grey. Beauty plays and runs in the meadow and receives lessons from his mother, Duchess, about the importance of being nice and gentle and never biting or kicking. When Beauty turns four, Farmer Grey trains him to carry riders on his back and pull carriages. After being sent to a neighbor s pasture near the train station to get used to the sounds of the road, Beauty is sold to Squire Gordon at Bertwick Hall. This is where he gets his name; other than a white star on his forehead and a white ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Cult Of The Second World War For The Soviet Union The cult of the Second World War for the Soviet Union, Denise Youngblood writes, was heavily supported during the war years through the medium of film. Of the seventy films produced in the Soviet Union between 1941 and 1945, 70 percent were focused on subjects directly pertaining to war. This is an overwhelming percentage of war films when compared with the genre trends of other European film industries of this time. Youngblood notes, however, that these films often did not depict frontline battles, or even the homefront itself, as was the tendency of other nations films. The devastation of the Eastern Front was simply too enormous for cheery Stalinist propaganda to hide, and Soviet audiences acutely aware of its demoralising reality. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A massive departure from their predecessors in the genre, these post Stalinist films examined war s effects on the individual level. For example, in The Fate of a Man, Andrei Sokolov s constant ruminations on war s pointlessness, and his breakdown following his son s death at the front, were revolutionarily humanistic depictions of war s consequence in Soviet cinema. Another hitherto avoided theme brought to the forefront by the films of The Thaw was that of war s strains on romantic relationships. The Cranes are Flying provides an illustrious example of wartime heartache as it portrays the growing distance between those on the frontline and those they left at home, and furthermore, the suffering those at home undergo when their loved ones do not return at all. Ivan s Childhood, one of the last films to be released prior to the Soviet Union s reestablishment of strict artistic controls in the late 1960 s, tells the story of a twelve year old orphan, Ivan, who works as a scout for the Red Army. At its core, Ivan s Childhood is the tale of a childhood innocence snatched away by the grim reality of warfare. The cult of the Second World War began to be challenged in post Stalinist cinema as war increasingly became something to be resented as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Charles Darwin And Alfred Wallace QXT2 Task 2 Charles Darwin and Alfred Wallace like so many of their predecessors made observations of natural phenomena that inspired proposals of how life on earth evolved, unlike others these men formed plausible explanations of how the changes in populations occurred without having any knowledge of Mendelian genetics which was presented in 1868, and provided the micro mechanism for evolution that Darwin could never explain with his theory of Pangenesis. Rather, based solely on the observations each made over time observing different species of populations around the world, both men were able to pen the ideals that would serve as the foundation of the modern theory of evolution. Both Wallace and Darwin explored the proposals that had been set forth by the likes of Lamarck, Lyell, and Thomas Malthus. In 1858 the Linnaean Society of London published the contributions of both Wallace and Darwin, which although had significant differences shared the framework of proposing decent with modification based on natural selection. The principle of natural selection provides the rationale of how changes occur in a species over time. It represents the sum total of all environmental factors exerting pressure on a species. The pressure either benefits an organism that has a favorable variation; triggering a natural advantage to the survival value of that organism/species, or either the pressure exposes weaknesses in an organism/species that has unfavorable variations. • 5. The Numbers And Counting System In Ancient Egypt Numbers and counting systems are used daily by everyone. Numerous civilizations throughout history like Egypt, Babylonian, Maya and Africa developed a unique number system. They were commonly used to communicate numbers in an everyday life. Since then counting has changed. A few of the earlier systems had principles that survived and helped in some way, shape or form to create our current Hindu Arabic numbering system. It has become widespread. Back in 3000 B.C, ancient Egypt was using the number system to calculate areas of land, distribute money, and much more. The Egyptian counting system consisted of hieroglyphs and pictorial signs. The graphic numbers can be of a person, animal, or plant. The hieroglyphic numbers were a written form of the number system. It used a decimal base approach. For all the powers of ten, there was a unique symbol. For example, the number ten was represented as a upside down U , for the number a hundred thousand it was tadpole, for a million it was represented by a man kneeling with his arms raised. When reading or writing the number, it is written from right to left. It was written on temples, vases, and stone monuments. The Egyptians used hieroglyphic numbers to advance in architectural achievements. Math was used to make historical creations like tombs and pyramids. Greenwald and Thomley agree that the ancient Egyptians were also aware of fractions, which were primarily written as unit fractions of the form 1⁄n, such as 1⁄2or 1⁄4... ... This is because I have a family member who just recently birthed a child. She received the required amount of 12 weeks of maternity leave, as well as being granted an extra 6 weeks additionally. So this kind of law made sense for me. Now just a little background on this employment law, it was enacted in 1993 by President Bill Clinton. The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 allows employees who have worked for a company for 1 year or more to apply for a period of unpaid leave with no fear of losing their job. This case is officially referred to as Gilliam vs. United Parcel Service Inc., handed down on November 29th, 2000. The court case document, that notes Gilliam, in full as Reginald Gilliam, assumed that the Family and Medical Leave Act licensed him to be able to up to 120 days off of work without obtaining any penalty. Mr. Gilliam also believed that he did not have to advise his current employer of his schedule of return to work. There was apparently a miscommunication of words between Mr. Gilliam and Mr. Gilliam s supervisor about the amount of time that Mr. Gilliam would be out of the workplace for. This therefore created confusion and disagreements, leading to a U.S. Circuit Courts decision. All in all, the court confirmed the official accord of Judge Robert L. Miller. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana and Judge Miller had their rulings upheld, stating that Mr. Gilliam has the full responsibility to inform the company at least 30 days prior to beginning the requested leave period. Mr. Gilliam failed to fulfill his legal obligations under the Family and Medical Leave Act and therefore will now reap the repercussions of his failure to abide by the ... • 9. Robert Dahl Pluralism Robert Dahl in Dilemmas of Pluralist Democracy (1982) realizes that there are several issues to understanding the term democracy and the antiquated meaning that it has. In this reading, Dahl also addresses domination and how power and its influence are allocated in the political process through interest groups and organized political parties. On the first concept, Dahl attempts to give democracy a more adequate meaning to the modern world. He coins the term Polyarchy where society tries to implement democracy in large scale governments, also known as countries. (pg. 131) This is Dahl s response to knowing that in all democratized countries there are organizations or independent factions that exist. For Dahl this freedom to assemble is known as a pluralist democracy and shows that a country that is exercising democratic pluralism is one where polyarchy and important groups are autonomous. Pg. 132 As a result, Dahl concludes that any country that is democratic is considered a pluralist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He sets a criteria based on his observations of the ideals of Democracy. These ideals consist of 5 qualities that must exist in order for a democracy to function. In his observations he identifies the following: 1. Equality in voting, 2. Effective participation, 3. Enlightened understanding, 4. Final control over the agenda, and 5. Inclusion. Dahl then discovers a dilemma in pluralist democracy. This dilemma is in understanding that people aren t autonomous if their decision making process fails to satisfy the criteria above and that also if the political process were to meet the criteria in its entirety. Then people ironically could not govern themselves as a result. (pg. 133) Dahl s critique is that since democracy is related to the idea of people being autonomous, then therefore a decision making process can only be democratic if and only if it meets these criteria. • 13. Persuasive Essay On Cheating On Homework In Survey I, 91.9% of the participants reported that they have cheated on at least one homework assignment; however, when asked why they receive answers, 13.5% of the participants stated that they do not receive answers (Appendix D). Therefore, it can be concluded that some students believe that cheating on homework assignments is not considered as immoral. This may further explain why students cheat. Furthermore, 91.9% of students reported cheating at least once, albeit 51.4% of students stating that it s bothersome when others cheat (Appendix D). This is due to self serving bias, which is when people blame other individuals when their action negatively affects them, while they blame the situation when their act negatively affects others (Boyes, 2013). For example, if someone gets into a car accident, one automatically assumes that person is a bad driver, while if one gets into a car accident himself, one will find excuses and say it was not their own fault. Similarly, when a student cheats in high school, they find reasons to justify that action, even when they know it is wrong, which is the case with 62.2% of students in this survey (Appendix D). However, when another student cheats in the same class, it is bothersome to some students because they see it as unfair and disrespectful on the student s part. Moreover, 24.3% of students reported that they cheat because they want to help their friends out (Appendix D). Therefore, when they see others, who are not their friend ... Heartburn occurs when the gastric acid in one s stomach goes back up to the esophagus. This can be counteracted however by using a basic substance such as Tums. • 16. Food Deserts in Chicago Background Healthy eating is vital to eliminating sickness and diseases in one s life. Many people suffer from diabetes, obesity, heart conditions, and high blood pressure because of improper eating habits. To a degree, most of these eating habits are related to limited access to produce healthy foods. The increasing amount of food deserts and lack of family income contributes to African American obesity rates, and lack of healthy choices. Ironically, these food desserts reside in communities plagued by poverty. These income restrictions also add to the problems that are part of being in a food desert. Literature Review Mari Gallagher(2006). Examining the Impact of Food Deserts on Public Health in Chicago Food deserts are places where healthy foods are not produced nor sold. Unfortunately, Chicago is filled with food deserts. Approximately 600,000 people reside in areas that consist of food deserts (Gallagher, 2006). Nearly 200,000 of those people are children. These children do not have the opportunity for healthier options, which shows an increase in obesity rates (News One Staff, 2011). There are 77 Chicago communities and out of that 77, 23 are food deserts (Gallagher, 2006). Chicagoans particularly the black communities are forced to live off the accessible food that is near them. The food deserts are in Austin, North Lawndale, Armour Square, Near South Side, Fuller Park, Grand Boulevard, Washington Park, Woodlawn, West Lawn, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Ashburn, ... • 18. Enzymes Essay Enzymes Enzymes are biological catalysts that carry out thousands of chemical reactions that occur in living cells. They are a class of proteins that have a unique three dimensional structure that allows it to bind with a specific substrate to facilitate a reaction. Many biological reactions will not occur spontaneously in the cell; there is simply not enough energy for the reaction to take place. Enzymes make these reactions possible by lowering the reaction s activation energy. Each cell has tens of thousands of different enzymes that collectively allow both the break down and synthesis of molecules to drive all cellular processes. This investigation will explore the effect of pH ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These biological catalysts are important because they speed up the rate of the reaction they catalyze that would otherwise be too slow to support life. Catalase is an enzyme present in the cells of plants, animals and aerobic (oxygen requiring) bacteria. It promotes the conversion of hydrogen peroxide, a powerful and potentially harmful oxidizing agent, to water and molecular oxygen. 2H2O2 to 2H2O + O2 Catalase also uses hydrogen peroxide to oxidize toxins including phenols, formic acid, formaldehyde and alcohols. H2O2 + RH2 to 2H2O + R Where is it found and what does it do? Catalase is located in a cell organelle called the peroxisome. Peroxisomes in animal cells are involved in the oxidation of fatty acids, and the synthesis of cholesterol and bile acids. Hydrogen peroxide is a byproduct of fatty acid oxidation. White blood cells produce hydrogen peroxide to kill bacteria. In both cases catalase prevents the hydrogen peroxide from harming the cell itself. Peroxisomes in plant cells are involved in photorespiration (the use of oxygen and production of carbon dioxide) and symbiotic nitrogen fixation (the breaking apart of the nitrogen molecule N2 to reactive nitrogen atoms). • 20. The Dark Side Of Chocolate The Dark Side of Chocolate is a documentary that explores the underlying issues prevalent in the cocoa trade. For most first world countries chocolate is seen as an accessible treat, however in third world countries, the production of cocoa creates social issues that must be eliminated. Cocoa trade is one of the largest industries in West African countries, but the issues that arise from such trade do more harm than good. The cocoa plantations are trafficking humans to work on their plantations. Furthermore, most instances suggest that these workers do not receive any compensation for their work and most importantly some of these slave laborers are children. Thus, the three issues that the cocoa companies routinely commit in exchange for lower costs are human trafficking, slave labor, and child labor. These companies are aware of such issues but refuse to actively combat them because they are better off financially. It can be argued that these issues can be mitigated through various social, governmental and political policies aimed at combating these problems. The three main issues will be addressed and the various stakeholders affected by these issues will be analyzed. Then this paper will look at the possible solutions to these issues, whereby through government, social or political means. Human trafficking is the first of the issues prevalent in the cocoa trade. Frankenstein looks at the dangers of creating artificially intelligent beings, while Parable of the Sower explores human savagery in the collapse of American civilization as the result of poor political decisions. Each addresses concerns of the time they were published. While both are pessimistic views of the future and both require the suspension of disbelief, the concept of dystopia and utopia is definitely apparent in both novels. A dystopia being a world in which nothing is perfect and a utopia being a perfect world. Frankenstein addresses a timeless issue that modern science may soon make a reality, while Parable of the Sower creates an alarming depiction of conservative leadership. Frankenstein is an early depiction of the creation of artificial intelligence, an idea with great significance today. While artificially intelligent beings such as golems exist in myth as the product of magic, scientific progress has the true potential to make such beings. The internet is all too often considered as a safe environment for sharing information, transactions and controlling the physical world, yet cyberwars are already ongoing and there is an urgent need to be better prepared. That just shows how in reality we as a society are not looking at the bigger picture. We worry less about how with a push of a button tons of information can be stolen or even erased. As Hans mentioned cyberwars are happening in front of us without us realizing it. That is why as a society with access to a great deal of technology people need to be more aware of cybersecurity. There are many ways that the public can be made aware of it. One of those ways is to show actual evidence to people who tend to prioritize technology, and the online network instead of just giving them a warning. The vehicular delays are even high during peak hours in this intersection. Therefore, future evaluation of the intersection should consider congestion and mobility as the most important design challenge. However, in the evaluation of congestion reducing design strategies, civil engineers should adopt sustainable mechanisms. For example, design mechanisms that increase diversity in the transport system such as transit improvement will increase sustainability. On the other hand, those designs that increase the population of traffic such as expansion of the intersection may reduce sustainability. To increase sustainability, civil engineers should consider reliability and transport expenditures in the new design. The current design of the intersection is unsustainable due to improper timing of the traffic signals. An important factor in arguing Dunkirk as a defeat is that 68,111 men from the B.E.F were killed, wounded or taken prisoner during the evacuation. The cost of replacing the B.E.F s equipment would be astronomical for the government and for their part in the evacuation the Navy suffered 243 ships sunken (including 6 important British destroyers with 19 left damaged) and the RAF lost 474 aircraft. Source 3 supports the view of Dunkirk as a British military defeat. It is a photographic source showing Dunkirk after the evacuation displaying a deserted beach littered with equipment, corpses and debris. Off the shore are broken half sunken ships with those that have become beached, one possibly a military boat and also many smaller vessels. The photograph of the dead soldiers shows military defeat as the objective was to rescue the B.E.F and would be very demoralising for the British public. The large boat could belong to the navy and would be very valuable, loss of this would be very expensive, along with the rest of the abandoned equipment. The source seems reliable as it is first hand primary evidence. It is useful for showing defeat as it displays what it looked like at Dunkirk after the evacuation. Its also backs up my own knowledge as the B.E.F lost 68,111 men and you would expect bodies on the beaches where ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Environment And DAPL Lectures For my event immersion, I chose to attend two different lectures. Specifically, the power of knowledge: higher education, reintegration and liberation, as well as the environment/DAPL lecture. Both lectures served as a reminder of what is necessary towards a focus on education in society. I decided to look at both lectures because of my interest in how the two potentially collide based off an interesting that I had personally. Socialization is one aspect of the conversation that does not necessarily come forth, but holds a large degree of relevance. The significance of these lectures is that they all revolve around a need for people to be more understanding of one another through education. Education serves as a vehicle that helps people to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The issue here is based on the fact that socialization ultimately works in hand with education and it applies the identities. That is, Harro (2008) found that identities are ascribed to us at birth through no effort or decision or choice of our own (p. 46). Considering this, it becomes increasingly difficult to create a us vs them scenario. When in reality, it is two groups of people who have grown up believing two different ideologies, and there is not really any type of dynamic change that is associated with this conversation. The contrast of these two conversations only add to the ongoing understanding of how difficult it is to have a difference if any. The more important conversation that is occurring here is ultimately how can one bridge the gap of knowledge and conversation that is occurring here. Society currently stands at odds due in part to the fact that there is a gap in knowledge and socialization is at the heart of it. In the instances provided by both lecturers, they are tied by the fact that there is no real manner upon which their issues can be resolved because socialization ultimately acts as the judge and jury. They are both looking to bridge the gap between the two parties at odds that have developed. However, as Harro stated, there isn t a realistic solution due in part to the fact that socialization is so significant in this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Lydia Davis And Marge Piercy The human species is strange. And it is very hard for one to understand another, yet it is harder for a human to understand oneself. Lydia Davis and Marge Piercy use Head, Heart and Barbie Doll to express to readers two different internal struggles that people have. Davis and Piercy both use strong diction to express the internal fights that humanity has within themselves. Both Davis and Piercy also use free verse to tell their poems and to get their point across. In Head, Heart , Lydia Davis gets right to the point with her poem. Her poem is only ten lines long but in those ten lines she uses short sentences and multiple forms of punctuation. In Head, Heart , Davis writes about the internal fight between the speakers heart and the speakers head. Davis uses metonymy in her writing. The head to portray reason and the heart to portray emotion. She writes about how the head is trying to comfort the broken heart by telling the heart that there will be others and that You will lose the ones you love. (Davis line 4) The writer uses a conflict between emotion and reason. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Barbie Doll , the speaker is fighting herself with accepting who she really is versus who society wants her to be. Piercy uses exaggerated diction and is very sarcastic with her writing. This shows readers that it is a silly thing to feel so unaccepted because of physical appearance but the reality of it is that these things do actually happen to people. And this is a major issue in society as a whole. The writer tells a story of a girl who is born just like any other girl but grows into this body that is so unaccepted by ... • 40. What Is The Detrimental Nature Of The Prison System One of the greatest emphases that Victor Hugo enlightens in Les Miserables is the detrimental nature of the prison system. During the time Les Miserables was penned, a vast amount of issues plagued the prison system, and many of them are touched on in the novel. The prison system was structurally and functionally crumbling during the time of Les Miserables; from excessive punishment to skewed workforce, even the miserable living/working conditions for the convicts. Hugo emphasizes countless other issues throughout the novel, but these three are constantly referenced and expanded upon. The primary issue undermining the entire novel, excessive punishment, is the key reason as to why the prison system is the way it is. Javert has been tailing Jean Valjean ever since he left the galleys a free man. I found myself asking questions along the lines of What does Javert do all day? Doesn t this guy have anything else to do except chase a former convict all over France? This frustrated me throughout the novel because instead of examining the problems with the prison system, we have people wasting years and lots of time and money pursing a convict that was unfairly sentenced in the first place for a petty crime, and ended up on death row for something that should have been a fine and maybe one year of jail time at the maximum. Javert sums this up in his dialogue with Valjean in the movie. Now prisoner 24601, your time is up and your parole s begun. You know what that means? Yes, it means I m free. No. Follow to the letter your itinerary, this badge of shame you wear until you die. It warns that you re a dangerous man. (Les Miserables Movie Musical). Max believes that he will have better opportunities in Canada rather than in his home country. This short story details his views on his life at this point, and how he is doing in Canada. The prompt immediately begins with the question, Where d you come from? . This tells the reader that Max is not from the current country or setting in which the story takes place. He recalled how he planned to get married, have children, begin a family with a house, maybe even a cottage on the edge of the city. Middle class was his goal, he d provide for his family, a stark difference from the hard to mouth life he was used to. But then, all too quickly, this daydream is ripped from him as his feet pressed to asphalt, continuing his never ending search for a job. With each step, he finds his sense of revulsion increasing, and thus begins his doubts. He wonders if he was really happy on the island, happier than he even realized before reaching Canada. Again, reality tears him from his regrets and hopes and he knew he needed to find a job or he will starve. His tone quickly takes a sharp turn into humorous denial, perhaps another past thought of what he thought life in Canada would be like; No one starved in Canada; that only happened in such places as India or Africa. • 42. How Does Rip Van Winkle Affect Society Washington Irving wrote Rip Van Winkle in 1819 around the time of the American Revolution. British ruled the colonies and they were so determined to break free. The period prior to the revolution and after was evident with change. The society altered in extreme shared, political and analytical aspects. Freedom to do as they wanted was their main objective. One could easily compare this time period to the story of Rip Van Winkle. This is a story about change and transformation. The story revolves around a family man known as Rip and his demanding wife Dame. Rip had no desire to do any constructive work because he was a pretty happy mortal that didn t take very much serious, and would rather starve than work for a penny. • 43. Symbols In John Irving s A Prayer For Owen Meany There are numerous symbols that John Irving incorporated into A Prayer for Owen Meany. While some symbols only appear in the novel once, other symbols happen to recur throughout the novel. Such recurring symbols are the several manifestations of armless figures, which are Tabby s dressmaker s dummy, the armadillo, and the statue of Mary Magdalene. The most significant manifestation of the armless figures is Tabby s dressmaker s dummy since its symbolism of Tabby primarily contributes to the reader s understanding of Owen s belief that he was God s instrument, as well as the overall theme of predestination. Tabby s dressmaker s dummy was first introduced in chapter three, The Angel . One of the first things that John reveals about it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to John, the dressmaker s dummy was an exact replica of Tabby s body, therefore it can be assumed that it symbolizes Tabby herself. Tabby is significant to the novel because she contributes to the reader s understanding of Owen s belief that he was God s instrument. The novel circulates around Owen s belief that he was God s instrument and the accident involving Tabby s death emphasized this belief, thus enabling readers to really grasp what Owen meant by being God s instrument. Since disturbing the angel, Owen felt it was his destiny to aid in Tabby s death, thus aiding in an act that God destined to happen. Owen saw the accident as God acting through him to make the task happen, which is exactly what Owen means by being God s instrument. Tabby s character also contributes to the overall theme of predestination because her death is what Owen believed was supposed to happen, that s why he didn t feel guilty about the baseball striking her left temple. Furthermore, the armlessness of the dressmaker s dummy foreshadows to Owen s predestined death when he loses his arms by the grenade.Without Tabby s presence in the novel, Owen s poof for being God s instrument and his belief in predestination would not be visible to the others living in Gravesend, including John. • 44. Camillo s Contradictions Most will agree that in The Winter s Tale, Camillo is one of the many complex and ambivalent characters in the play. This is because Camillo s character seems to show contradictions both in his actions and his speech. Camillo s doubleness raises the question of whether his contradictions are rooted in honesty and morality or selfishness and disloyalty. I would argue that his contradictions reflect a dissonance between what he believes and what he is asked to do by his superiors and not a display of duplicity. As I watched the Public Theater s Mobile Shakespeare Unit production of The Winter s Tale at The Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center on Wednesday, November 15, my understanding of Camillo was amplified and my previous claim reaffirmed. Camillo had no choice but to obey his superiors and his conscience throughout the play. Camillo s acts of disobedience, manipulation or deceitfulness might seem like acts of selfishness and disloyalty, but I disagree. Through Joseph Hall s descriptions of The Character of the Wise Man , Of the Honest Man and Of the Valiant Man in his Characters of virtues and vices, it is evident that Camillo is a virtuous man and that his acts were a manifestation of his loyalty to what he believed was right and honorable. Thus, through this angle, Camillo s behavior is in fact constant throughout the play even when it appears contradictory. Before I had watched the play, I had believed that Camillo had been the alternative of Leontes and Polixenes because even as a servant of both kings, he displayed more nobility and wisdom; yet still a shred of doubt planted by classmates lurked in my mind. Were his intensions to be selfish and were they predetermined? Was he not trustworthy and loyal? Was he treacherous? Did he deserve punishment? These questions joggled in my head as the play began and I waited intently for Camillo s depiction. At the same time, I held on to my first expectations of Camillo. I had thought he would be portraited as an honorable person with good judgement, but I was not sure what to expect when it came to the portrayal of his contradicting behavior. If he loved the kings and was honorable, then why would he betray them when this was considered a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
