IMS is the 3GPP standard architecture for delivering multimedia services over next generation networks using common Internet protocols. It uses SIP for session initiation and provides efficient charging. The IMS architecture includes the P-CSCF for user contact, I-CSCF for routing to S-CSCF which handles registration and sessions, and HSS for subscriber and service data storage. VoLTE allows high quality voice calls over 4G LTE networks using IMS. SIP is an application layer protocol used to establish real-time communications sessions for voice, video or text using Internet-enabled devices. Call testing in IMS 4G networks can include VoLTE-VoLTE, VoLTE-Jio join, and video calls

5. 1. What is IMS ?
IMS is a global, access independent and standard based IP
connectivity and service control architechture that enables various
types of multimedia services to end-users common Internet based
protocols. IMS is the 3GPP standard architecture for delivering
multimedia services in next generation networks. IMS is a logical
layer that runs over IP and uses SIP for sessions’ initiation. Besides,
sessions’ initiation and multimedia delivery, IMS will provide very
efficient accounting and charging services for operators. The
major strength of IMS is that it is a multi-operator and multi-
handset-vendor platform that will allow end users to connect
regardless of their location (i.e., operator) and their handset type.

7. P-CSCF
• Proxy-Call Session Control Function (P-CSCF)
– The first contact point for users within the IMS
– All SIP signaling traffic from or to the UE go via the P-CSCF
• P-CSCF may behave as a user agent (UA)
– release sessions in abnormal conditions e.g.,when a bearer
loss is detected according to service-based local policy
– generate independent SIP transactions
• There can be one or many P-CSCFs within an operator's
network

• Interrogating-CSCF (I-CSCF)
– a contact point within an operator's network for all connections
destined to a subscriber of the network operator
– there may be multiple I-CSCFs within an operator's network
• Functions performed by I-CSCF
– contact the HSS to obtain the name of the S-CSCF that is serving
a user
– assign an S-CSCF based on received capabilities from the HSS
– forward SIP requests or responses to the S-CSCF
– send accounting-related information to the CCF (Charging
Collection Function)

9. S-CSCF
• Serving-CSCF (S-CSCF)
– the brain of the IMS
– located in the home network
– performs session control and registration services for UEs
• There may be multiple S-CSCFs, and S-CSCFs may have different
functionalities within an operator's network
• Functions performed by S-CSCF
- handle registration requests by acting as a registrar
- download user information and service-related data from the HSS
during registration or when handling a request to an unregistered user

10. Home Subscriber Server
• Home Subscriber Server (HSS)
– the main data storage for all subscriber and service-related data of
the IMS
• The main data stored in HSS - user identities
1. private user identity - the user identity that is assigned by the home
network operator and is used for such purposes as registration and
authorization
2. public user identity - the identity that other users can use for
requesting communication with the end user

11. 2. What is VoLte?
VoLte stands for voice over long term evolution and it’s more or less
exactly what it says on the tin. It’s voice calls over a 4G LTE
network, rather than the 2G or 3G connections which are usually
used. We tend to think of 4G as mostly being about downloading ,
streaming and web browsing, and indeed that is primarily what it is
been used for so far, but it can also be used to improve calls.

• Session Initiation Protocol (SIP, as in sipping from a fire hose
on a hot day) is an open signaling protocol standard
developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in
cooperation with many industry leaders, for establishing,
managing, and terminating real-time communications over
large IP-based networks, such as the Internet.
Communications via voice, video, or text (instant messaging),
may take place using any combination of SIP-enabled devices,

such as a softphone on a laptop computer, a wireless handheld
device or PDA, a mobile phone, an instant messaging client on a
desktop PC, or an IP phone with videoconferencing capabilities. SIP
is an application layer peer-to-peer communication protocol for
establishing, manipulating, and tearing down communication
sessions.
• SIP is used to identify, locate, and enjoin parties who want to
communicate using any peer-to-peer media type. However, SIP
does not transport the media itself: That is handled by codecs
within the communications programs or devices.
