The thyroid gland secretes hormones that regulate metabolism. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) from the pituitary gland stimulates thyroid hormone secretion, while thyroid hormone itself provides feedback to decrease TSH secretion. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone from the hypothalamus regulates pituitary TSH secretion. Cold exposure and other stimuli can affect these regulatory pathways. Antithyroid drugs like thiocyanate and propylthiouracil suppress thyroid function by interfering with iodine transport or hormone synthesis.
