Deaf Culture
Deaf Culture
In mainstream American society, we tend to approach deafness as a defect. Helen Keller is alleged to
have said, Blindness cuts people off from things; deafness cuts people off from people. (rnib.org) This
seems a very accurate description of what Keller s world must have been. We as hearing people tend
to pity deaf people, or, if they succeed in the hearing world, admire them for overcoming a severe
handicap. We tend to look at signing as an inferior substitute for real communication. We assume that
all deaf people will try to lip read and we applaud deaf people who use their voices to show us how far
they have come from the grips of their disability. Given this climate, many hearing people are
surprised, as I was at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
ASL also avoids one of the biggest scourges of English: the pronoun problem, the tendency of English
speakers to use he as a generic singular pronoun representing any unknown person, male or female.
However, once a person is mentioned in an ASL conversation, she is given a location in space which
represents her for the remainder of the conversation. Different ways of pointing to this location can
indicate the number of people who occupy it, and their role in the conversation but not their sex.
(aslinfo.com)
Because about 90% of Deaf people are born to hearing parents, they absorb their culture from their
peers, not their families. Most Deaf children who attend residential schools for the deaf pick up ASL
from their classmates. Because of this source of cultural identity, one of the first questions Deaf
people ask upon meeting each other is where they went to school and who their teachers were. In this
way, the Deaf community can become very close knit, as each member becomes familiar with
residential schools in various regions of the country. Deaf culture also places a great deal of emphasis
on physical contact. Hugging is far more common than shaking hands, especially when parting. Deaf
good byes are unusually drawn out and even in passing not taking time to chat for a few minutes is
considered rude. The Deaf community easily becomes a second family to many people whose own
families are hearing. Like many minority

Citizen In Theatre

A Citizen in the Theatre Community
The expression the world s a stage truly does hold up in today s modernized society. Theatre is a lively
subject, enabling us to take written language and add it with human emotion to receive a fascinating
presentation that captivates the audience and the actors alike. Being up on stage has a plethora of
benefits but comes with many responsibilities as well. As a member of the Maplewood Richmond
Heights High School, I am responsible for recognizing what I am responsible for, what my standards
are, and what my expectations for my peers in this class should be. As a citizen, a steward, a leader,
and a scholar, I should uphold others experiences in this class in addition to my own. To do this, I will
need to actively engage in classroom activities every day and be present. By doing these things, I will
ensure that I be an active participant in the Theatre I learning experience. In addition, I can also
contribute expertise, caring, and commitment to the class so that it can function correctly as a team.
This attitude toward my class will contribute to better social relations within it and a better learning
experience among my peers. An example high expectations might happen during a play, where
everyone is forced to contribute and persevere until a job is well done. If one ... Show more content on

Some of these include to be engaged and present a hundred percent of the time, hold an A average in
that class, and help other students do the same. In my perspective, if one person fails, then the team
does as well. By committing to helping others, I help myself as well. As I mentioned before, there is
an advanced systematic procedure for putting on a play that could easily fall apart if one person didn t
do the right thing. I would greatly dislike to be that person, so I try to challenge myself as much as I
can to avoid this incident from

Modem Policing
Policing, similar to many profession, learns and grows from experience. It takes at that point, that as
modem police administrators scan for more powerful methodologies of policing, they will be guided
by the lessons of police history. The trouble is that police history is mixed up, its lessons difficult to
peruse. All things considered, that history was created by a large number of neighborhood offices
seeking after their own particular dreams and reacting to nearby conditions. In spite of the fact that
that shifted encounter is possibly a rich wellspring of lessons, divisions have left couple of records that
uncover the patterns forming modem policing.

Examples Of Id, Ego, And Superego In Mary Shelley s...
According to modern psychologists, Sigmund Freud is considered the father of modern psychology;
Freud s idea of the three zones of the psychic apparatus play a heavy influence in Mary Shelley s
Frankenstein. The three zones are Id, Ego, and Superego. The Id is natural instincts, Ego is the
influence of the Id caused by society, and the Superego is acting based off of adopted morals taught to
you. The Monster s personality traits in Frankenstein are examples of Freud s idea of Id, Ego, and
Superego. Throughout the novel, each trait is developed with the Id being first ; and alternating back
and forth between all of them on which one becomes the dominant trait.
When the Monster is first created, he acts on natural instincts to keep himself alive. The Monster must
figure out life on his own because he does not have a parental figure to teach him right from wrong.
The Id instincts take over the Monster s actions I ate some berries...I slaked my thirst at the brook
(Shelley 87). He is predominantly motivated by his self centered id drives due to his natural instincts
of survival. The Monster has no idea that some of his actions are believed to be immoral by society
because his libidinous id is telling him what to do to survive such as to steal a part of their store in my
own consumption (94). Through his selfish actions the Monster realized that his actions had
repercussions I found that in doing this I inflicted pain on the cottagers (94) causing them to be hungry

Confucius And Confucianism
Confucius s philosophical teachings about government and society discussed in the Analects revolve
around morality and how a ruler and his people should act in order to stabilize society. Confucius
looked to the past to discuss the problems of the present by modeling his teachings from the former
Zhou empire. Confucius sought to bring back the Zhou traditions in order to better society. By linking
moral behaviors to social roles and hierarchies, he emphasized that the stability of the government and
society was directly correlated to the relationship between the ruler and the people. With the title Son
of Heaven, the ruler was expected to act morally towards his subjects and treat them with love and
concern ( Introduction to Confucian Thought , 2009). This idea is directly related to the concept of
ren, which discusses the well being of others as the moral drive of society. He extended this idea into
social harmony, being first and foremost embedded in the family. Confucius believed that the virtue of
filial piety was the foundation for not just family life but also had implication for the ruler subject
bond ( Mencius and his development of Confucian teachings , n.d.). Similarly, Mencius centered his
teachings on this idea by stressing that the well being of the family directly corresponded to the well
being of the state. Most importantly however, Confucius also discussed the importance of the ruler
ruling over the people with virtue, which was achieved through ritual

President Jimmy Carter And The Iran Hostage Crisis
Mere minutes after President Jimmy Carter was out of office, the Iran Hostage Crisis, for which his
presidency is most remembered, was over. Behind him was a disjointed foreign and confused
domestic policy. When he left office, Carter s approval rating was 34 percent, and his disapproval
rating nearly twice that (Roper Center). Today, it seems that he is a better ex President than he was a
president, as evidenced in his founding of the Carter Center, his cultivation of his presidential library,
his contributions to Habitat for Humanity, and his numerous other humanitarian efforts. During his
term, he had a poor relationship with Congress, a low approval rating with the American people, and a
lack of cohesive international or domestic policy. I believe his two greatest failures are also the two
which marked his entire presidency and caused the drop in his approval ratings: the confused and
faltering domestic and international policies which lasted throughout his presidency and the Iran
Hostage Crisis.
Jimmy Carter was a one term president who won on a campaign of being not Washington and not
Gerald Ford (Hargrove, 1988). Shortly after entering office, his refusal to trade political favors with
members of Congress, unwillingness to learn the rules of Washington politics and play by them, and
the general lack of communication between his administration and Congress stalled any possible
working relationship. This cannot be seen as a failure on the part of Congress, who

There Are Several Practices That Uber Can Adopt In Order
There are several practices that Uber can adopt in order to manage employee performance. Some
practices include social recognition and related positive reinforcement. Social recognition and positive
reinforcement consists of challenging employees and providing ample encouragement to motivate
those employees to continue to learn and to improve in the workplace. In order for Uber to encourage
employee engagement and employee performance they must express appreciation to their employees
in front of others. I believe positive reinforcement to be one of the most crucial steps in achieving an
environment that fosters employee engagement and in turn higher performance. Uber could also use
benefit packages to encourage employee performance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to accomplish a better understanding of what compensation policy will align with the
company s strategic aim, Uber must have a good understanding of the basic factors that determine pay
rates such as productivity and union influence. Uber must also use job evaluation methods such as
using a market based approach, market competitive pay plan, point method, wage curves, wage
structure and rate ranges, job classification, and even computerized job evaluations. Uber could also
use ranking as a job evaluation method which revolves around obtaining job information, selecting
and grouping jobs, then rank those jobs, and combine the ratings. A grade level example of job
evaluation evaluates completed work for conformance to policy; guidelines, such as regulations,
precedent cases, and policy statements that require considerable interpretation and adaptation. (Gary
Dessler) I believe that in order to achieve a compensation policy that aligns with the strategic aim of
the company, the best practices for Uber would be to adopt a competency based pay model that
evaluates employees based on their productivity. I believe that this will also increase employee
engagement overall, which leads the company as a whole to support the strategic aim. Benefits are an
extremely crucial part of an employees contract with a company. If Uber wants to be successful in
their expansion across the world, they must be able to provide the

This means that in the second quarter of each year Cabela s sell its inventory at a slower rate than the
rest of the quarters. The Day s Held ratio calculates how long it takes a company turn inventory into
sales. Cabela s sells mostly goods that are non perishable, meaning that their goods can last in their
shelves much longer. For Cabela s there is a continuous pattern showing their days held in inventory
ratio being much lower in the 4th quarter of each year. This may be due to consumers purchasing gifts
for the holiday season.
Dick s Sporting Goods
Dick s Sportings goods saw relative increases in both their inventory and COGS over the period. Their
inventory percentage change/overall sales change for the period, and their COGS percentage
change/overall sales change for the period experienced very similar fluctuations across the period.
Both ratios saw a sharp decline from 2006 2007, indicating the time of the recession. The inventory %
change ratio even dropped to 2.3%. Since 2008, both ratios have seen minor increases and decreases.
Dick s sporting goods inventory turnover ratio increased by an overall percent of 8.82%. This means
that the company is 8.82% better (quicker) at selling its inventory after they have purchased it. They
seem to have their highest turnover ratios in the fourth quarter of every year. Their most recent
inventory turnover ratio is 3.7x, with a DIO (Days in Inventory Ratio) of 97.8 days. This means that it

Water Properties And Ph Lab Report
Water Properties and pH
Abstract: These set of experiment are set up to observe water properties and pH in both base and
acidic solution. The first 7 are testing the properties of water and its function to support life. The last 3
are experimenting the pH of different solution as well as the use of buffer in nature and medical. Some
experiments is omitted or change due to error in preparation, but overall the experiment does show
significant details for natural phenomenal.
Introduction: the purpose of these sets of experiment is observing the properties of water as well as
measurement and properties of different pH level. Through lecture and textbook, many information
have been given about water and pH levels. Water with it polar covalent molecules has many
significant properties: hydrogen bonding, cohesion, adhesion, surface tension and heat vaporization. In
the others hand, students also learnt about pH, acid and base as well as how to define them in term of
properties and in pH measurement. During the experiment participants test properties of different pH
solution and their affect to environment as well as the use of buffer in different solution.
Methods: There are ten experiments are perform in lab number from 2 to 11. (number 1 is omitted).

The Theme Of Family In Frankenstein
The story of Frankenstein is one that focuses mainly on the idea of losing touch with the reality of
what is family and love whilst in the pursuit of knowledge. This can initially be experienced in the
beginning of the novel in the letters Walton sends to his sister Margaret Saville. In this case, Walton,
in search of a passage to the Pacific, risks his life without much regard for how his sister may feel.
During his voyage Walton eventually gets into a situation, being trapped in the ice, that jeopardizes
not only his main objective to find the passage, but the relationships he has at home, specifically his
sister. Much like Walton, Victor comes upon a fascination of his own, the natural world. This
fascination, rather an obsession, is the beginning of the end for Victor as it begins to alienate the
character from his loved ones. These types of obsessions can lead someone to lose touch with the
importance of family since they no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By this I mean that at the beginning, much like Walton and Victor, the monster had high hopes of
finding what he truly desired and later found that it was much harder achieved and that things would
not work out quite as planned. This is intriguing because it seems to be one of the central points of the
story, which is that in search of something we truly desire, whether it be adventurous, scientific, or
emotional in nature, can be detrimental to the relationship of family even if it is a family you are
looking for. For example, in the case of the monster, the way in which he reacted in hopes of
potentially getting Victor to create him a mate led Victor to believe that it would be trouble to create a
partner for him. This, in a sense, is what took away the possibility of the monster ever finding either
another creation or human being to

The Role Of Communication In The Domestication Of Cats
Domestication of cats began 9,500 years ago based on the carcass of a cat carefully laid at an ancient
Cyprus burial site next to a human being. Humans had already begun domestication other animals
such as dogs prior (Serpell, 2014). Cats became useful after humans settled and kept grains in stores,
which attracted mice. Using their predating skills to eradicate the mice they slowly self domesticated
themselves into man s home and heart. The cats adapted to the human environment by evolving some
of their behavior and abandoning their aggressive wild born behaviors which transformed some cats
from being feral to being pets. The three main sensory mediums for cats communication are visual,
vocal and scent. Vocal communications in cats strengthen the visual signals. Their sounds have a wide
range from quiet purrs and trills to loud distress vocalizations. Domestic and feral cats differ from
each other in their vocalization, which proves that human influences how cats talk.
Cats communicate with each other in a very unique way. They naturally know cat language although
sometimes it s hard for humans to pick up on what they re saying. Kittens meow more frequently than
adult cats especially to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

also the distance reducing signals. Sounds such as meow are produced while the mouth previously

signify distress for example hisses and growls. Purrs and meows vary in pitch, intensity, frequency,
rapidity, and volume depending on the physical needs and emotional state of the cat. Such sounds can

We all love dining out for good food and laughter with our family, friends or significant other.
Whether it s a birthday, an anniversary or a casual night on the town, eating at the right restaurant, that

That s what made Red lobster my favorite. it is not just a night of eating out, it is an experience. Not

The Case Of Lucy V.
Page 180 1. In the case of Lucy v. Zehmer, the courts focus for upholding Lucy s claim of assent, thus,
establishing a legal and binding contract to purchase Zehmer s farm for $50,000, was established in
part due to the conditions of objective intent being met. The court discerned that Lucy s objective
intent was founded in the fact that Lucy had every intention of meeting the conditions of the mutually
negotiated and accepted contract which was written and signed by both parties. In establishing the
objective intent, the court only needed to look at whether or not the contract would be deemed as such
by a reasonable person (Bethel University, 2011, pp. 178 179). 2. In order for the court to determine
that a contract did not exist between Lucy and Zehmer, a few key indicators would have to be
changed, the first of which is mutual assent . By definition, mutual assent is achieved when both
parties come to an agreement by means of an offer and acceptance of said offer. If Zehmer had simply
not accepted the offer made by Lucy then mutual assent would not have occurred, which would have
resulted in the court being unable to establish that a valid contract existed between the two parties
(Bethel University, 2011, pp. 178 179). Another fact, which could have resulted in an entirely different
outcome, would have been for Zehmer to not have written anything down. Although in some instances
a written agreement is not required in order to establish the existence of a contract, in

The Importance Of Attending An Aa Meeting
Attending an AA meeting was a very different experience for myself, I had herd of these meetings
through family but had never gone so it was a little scary for me to attend. I was not sure on what to
really expect when going or what I would get of out attending the meeting, but I was ready. The
meeting was over all very interesting and eye opening on how alcoholism occurs differently for every
person. I felt like this meeting was just an overview of what alcoholism really is, what it can do to
you, and how it affects everyone around you. I learned a lot from attending this meeting and realized
what it takes for someone to attend an AA meeting and to come to peace with their problem. I was
very nervous about attending an AA meeting alone, I had never been to one and I surely didn t not
want to go alone. I remembered a close cousin of mind attended AA meetings frequently, so I asked
her if she wouldn t mind going to one with me. I attended the Beginners and Slippers meeting at the

just beginning their journey to recovery. It was very intimidating to attend the AA meeting simply
because I felt out of place, like I shouldn t be there. Once we had arrived to the meeting, everyone
seemed so friendly and just like ordinary people. Everyone greeted one another and seemed so nice.

Ehrlichiosis and Anaplasmosis
Ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis are diseases caused by bacteria and carried by ticks. Other names for
these infections are:
Human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME).
Human granulocytotropic anaplasmosis (HGA).
CAUSES
These diseases are caused by a bite from an infected adult tick.
RISK FACTORS
These diseases are more likely to occur between late spring and early fall. This is when ticks are

Carlsbad Caverns National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is located in the state of New

type, which was created by a reaction involving rainwater and hydrogen sulphide rich brine (salt

what they are today. The site has been elected and given UNESCO World Heritage status for two
reasons, or criteria. One of the reasons for the listing is its natural beauty, abundance and diversity of

Reinhold Niebhur s Views On Original Sin
Reinhold Niebhur s views on Original sin fall in line with my own actually; I do believe that man is
inherently evil with power to do good. As much of a blessing that free will is, I believe it to also be a
curse because nothing good comes free. With the freedom to make our decisions comes the
responsibilty to not only know but also to understand the effects of them. Every action has a reaction,
and sin is the reaction to free will. Niebuhr holds that man is responsible for his unintentional sins,
even if there was no malice. Niebuhr argues through Pauline teachings that sin is essential; especially
with man s tendency for self glorification. Pauline teachings indicate that human sin is an inevitable

intentions. Our faulty minds and free will can easily fll prey deception and misinterpretation of what
we think we saw with ignorance and imagination filling the gaps, and no matter what level of mental
fortitude, sense of morality, or innate holiness man possesses. Man still falls subject to deception. If
our minds, which are factors in our free will, can be subjected to manipulation, it is not bizarre to
claim that man sins unintentionally and is responsible to correct its actions.
Man s biggest flaw is its weakness in the face of temptation because temptation also lies in its heart.
Man s free will is inherently corrupted by the temptations of life and the world. While free will pushed
man s creativity to what seems to be a limitless boundary, it has also played a part in man s own
undoing. Man s undoing lies in their ego and desire for self gratification and self glorification. They
constantly strive to expand their presence and knowledge so much so that it seems to know no bounds.
However even with man s ambition it is all subject to God s

the major material in the assembly of its airframe. The composite materials make the aircraft weigh
much less. The 787 was first airliner with the fuselage assembled with one piece composite barrel
sections instead of the multiple aluminum sheets. The Dreamliner has an airframe comprising nearly
50 percent composite material. Undertaking the design process without preconceived ideas enabled
Boeing engineers to specify the optimum material for specific applications throughout the airframe.
The result is an airframe comprising nearly half carbon fiber reinforced plastic and other composites.

Cultural Hybridity In The Namesake By Jhumpa Lahiri
The present paper attempts to assess the consequences ensued due to the cultural hybridity of two
generation of characters in Jhumpa Lahiri s novel The Namesake. The first immigrants Ashoke and
Ashima transmit the Bengali culture to their US born children Gogol and Sonia who in turn, transmit
the American cultural patterns to their parents. The psychological writhe of the Indian mother Ashima
trying to adjust herself in the American culture and endeavoring to inculcate the moral values

AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY, ZARIA.
Abstract
Importunate secret cult activities have created a culture of fear and turned many tertiary institutions
into centres of violence, where Fear, anxiety and insecurity of lives and properties are the order of the
day. These scenarios have resulted in poor learning, poor performance and low academic attainment.
The objective of this study is how to eradicate cultism from our tertiary institutions so as to enable
them to produce the much needed high level manpower for overall national development. The study is

Encyclopaedia Britannica (2009) cautions that cult worship is so universal in religion that some
historians of religion actually define religion as cult.
From the definitions given so far, we can deduce that cultism/cult, secret cult and secret society are
secret groups of people whose members are bound on an oath to keep the activities of each and every
member secret. It is also safe to say that cult fraternity may be violent or beneficial to the society,
depending on the objectives of the members. For example, some secret cults are formed to provide
benevolent services while others are formed due to political reasons to protect the interest of the
society. In light of these definitions, we shall use cultism, cult, secret cult and secret society
interchangeably.
2.2 The Evolution of Cultism
Secret adherence to a doctrine or leader based on a common dogma or beliefs has been in existence
for a very long time. All over the world, secret cults have been flourishing and causing positive and/or
negative impacts. On the positive side, religious experience are said to have received its initial,
practical expression in the forming of cult that provides an orderly framework for the religious object.
The Egyptian religion, the ancient Greek Adonis and the Roman Catholicism are said to be cults

Essay On The Movie Ikiru
In the movie, Ikiru follows the life of Kanji Watanabe, an aging bureaucrat who wants to find purpose
to his life after his diagnosis of cancer. Watanabe does the uncommon and goes against the norm, in
order to follow his passion and not follow strictly what tradition would want. In this film, the
traditional family home is absent because of the main character being a widower. Since he maintains
the role of breadwinner he has an estranged relationship with his only child as well as a generational
gap. The Japanese are very observant of ancient traditions such as Buddhism and Shintoism. Ikiru,
which means to live is directed by Akira Kurosawa, is based in postwar Japan during their
reconstruction. Japan is slowly becoming more westernized adopting capitalism, and democracy.
From this movie I learned that Japan is very homogenous and the people share the same religion,
language, and ethnic background. Yet by my research I found there isn t a single country that is 100%
uniform and in Japan only 1 percent of the population is made up of non Japanese people, with the
largest minority being South Koreans. Japan is becoming very industrialized and reminds me of New
York City, and the setting of the movie mirrored my thoughts and took place in the city. The main
character is diagnosed with stomach cancer and is something that is common in Japan because the
movie was made in 1952 which shortly follows World War 2. Many people after the atomic bombings

Personal Narrative Reflection
My third visit to Mrs. Casanova s class has thus far been my most productive, in terms of applying
something I have learned both from this class and UCF in general. With the end of the middle of the
second nine weeks rapidly approaching so too are classroom summative assignments. During my visit
on the twentieth I was able to both see the test creation process in a PLC and participate in the creation
of some questions. Two of the three teacher I have been able to spend time with in the classroom, the
first being in internship and the second, Mrs. Casanova with service learning. Both teachers employ
direct instruction as their primary means of conveying information, with Mrs. Casanova using it more
than the honors and AP teachers. However, within the PLC the test questions were being created for
all classes, rather than having separate questions for AP, honors, and regular classes, with the only
difference being the written response questions being more challenging in upper classes. Due to this,
content evidence was very important, especially for the upper classes, as they technically would be
getting the same test as a regular. Beyond this however, the instruction leading up to the test also had
to be evaluated as the questions were made with AP in mind. According to the book, content evidence
connects to state standards and what the students need to know based off this, which should be
reflected within the instruction (pg. 396).
One thing UCF does a great job of is

Why Is In Cold Blood Be Banned
Violence in mass media has been constantly discussed in the past twenty years as a reasoning for
teenage violence against others, between video games such as Doom and Call of Duty , movies such
as Fight Club , Scream , American Psycho , and Natural Born Killers and social media dehumanizing
acts of violence. Many parents have labeled anything that is not family friendly as a root cause of
criminal behavior. Others also blame the amount of violence in media now as unhealthy to young
people, solely because many don t know the line of what is real and not real. In Cold Blood , by
Truman Capote, details the gruesome murder of the Clutter family in rural Holcolb, Kansas in
November of 1959 committed by two men; Dick Hickock and Perry Smith. In Capote s novel, he
describes the motives of the killers and their backstory in order to help humanize them. Some may say
that because of both the violence and the humanization of the killers, the book should be banned.
However, banning the book would be censoring something important for youth to learn from. This
novel should be implemented in schools to let younger generations be aware of the real world, and to
be aware that not everything is picture perfect in the world. Because of the common exposure of dirty
media, kids pick up on signs fairly quickly that what they are watching is ... Show more content on

Imagine the government controlling every aspect of life, not only in the political side of the spectrum
but also on the social side as well. The thought could be passed by in the minds of most, as some sort
of authoritarian state or a form of communism, however this is actually true in most governments
including that of statewide and local government and its political agencies. As by definition, a
government is, The form or system of rule by which a state, community, etc., is governed.
(Dictionary.com) and behind the lines of the contemporary thought, the government s main role is to
control liberty and order which is contradictory in nature. On June 12, 2017 at 12:46 I was walking

Nigeria s Economy And Natural Resources Essay
Introduction
Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa and the seventh most populated country in the world.
It has the 20th largest economy in the world with a $500 billion to $1 trillion Gross Domestic Product
(GDP) with an emerging market and large oil and limestone natural resources. This is significant
knowing that limestone is a mineral source that is used in most products you use every day including
paper, bottles, paint, building supplies, and food. (WIKIPEDIA, 2015)
Through maximum exploration and exploitation, Nigeria can earn more foreign exchange to
complement its earnings. In addition, the utilization of this product will create job opportunities for
unemployed Nigerians and act as a job multiplier for other industries and business. Nigeria s economy
and natural resources place them in a position to become one of the largest economies in the world.

Frederick Douglas And Solomon Northrup Essay
Throughout the years slaveholders made claims that justified why the institution of slavery was
acceptable, however, many abolitionist made claims that differed the majority opinion. Abolitionist
began to publicize stories advocating truths about this institution. Fredrick Douglas and Solomon
Northrup shared their life stories where they exposed their experiences as slaves in the Southern
world.Slaves holders make several arguments to justify slavery, meanwhile, slaves themselves
completely disagree with all the things the masters claim. Violence versus paternalism, true
christianity and hypocritical christianity, and the role knowledge and ignorance and whether slaves are
truly happily plays are all powerful ideas in both sides convey . To begin with, slave masters thought
of themselves as a paternal figure. George Fizhugh, an author who advocates slavery, explains this
interesting concept of Blacks being viewed as childlike people. He states the Negro is but a grown up
child, and must be governed as child, not as lunatic or criminal. The master occupies toward him the
place of parent or guardian . The masters truly believed that they were meant to be paternal to these
underprivileged folks who did not have (and in some cases, know) parents or families. They believed
they were meant to raise and care for the Blacks that entered their plantations. However, slaves told a
different story. Fredrick Douglass and Solomon Northup s experiences show how brutal and violent

Observing A Right Hip Fracture Repair
Operating Room Observation Experience This past week, I was able to observe a right hip fracture
repair. The patient had broken his hip and was undergoing surgery to place screws and plates into his
hip. I was able to see the whole process through the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative
stages. The preoperative stage is when the patient comes to the OR and is being prepped for the
surgery. The patient is verified by the nurse, who needs to check patient identification, patient records
and make sure is calm for the surgery. Before this particular surgery, the anesthesiologist came down
before the surgery to administer a block to the patient. The block is to dull the nerve ending so when
the patients comes out of surgery he will be in less pain. The consent form is signed by two people, the
patient and the doctor performing the surgery. The consent form is the responsibility of the doctor, the
nurse just verifies that both the doctor and the patient signed the form. It is very common for a patient
to be anxious right before a major surgery. My patient didn t seem anxious but just wanted it to be
over and done with. One of the most important part of a nurse s job is to keep the patient calm and
relaxed. That can be accomplished just by talking to them and reassuring them. Keeping the patient
company will also ease their nerves. The nurse makes sure the patient is calm and relaxed right before
surgery. It is also important for the holding area nurse to make sure

Despite Asian Americans major strides in ascending the racial hierarchy and even being labelled as the

An Analysis of Joseph Nye s Use of Soft Power and its Relationship with Morality in International

of its invasion of Iraq and torture of prisoners of war. The United States holds an incredible edge in
military capabilities over any other nation and the US benefits from the largest economy in the world.
In a world where there is one single superpower, why is that superpower unable to force feed policy

Joseph Nye offers an alternative theory for the construct of State power. He created a system in which
State power is broken into two parts; hard power and soft power. Hard power consists of the
traditional, tangible aspects of power namely, military and economic power. Soft power is the key
distinguishing dynamic of Nye s work from other theories. Soft power consists of all other facets of
power, such as ideology, foreign policy, culture, stability, prosperity, and membership in international
organizations (Bound to Lead 130 and Paradox xi, 8). The modern world is becoming more
interconnected and interdependent with one another, hence depending less on sticks and carrots and
more on soft power. The missing link within perceived State power is the role morality plays in actual
power. This study will show that soft power is implicitly, and at rare times explicitly, founded in moral
values. The definition of morality or what constitutes proper morals is a difficult task and may be
explained differently 100 times if one were to ask 100 people. Generally speaking, being moral is
conforming to the standards of good or right. This vague definition is open for many interpretations.
As mentioned, morality is not recognized internationally or is scrutinized as a weakness by the realist
community, at least not openly so. Morality has played a role in international affairs and war for
centuries.

Overview of Mood Disorders Essay
The Mood Disorders category of the DSM IV TR, is one of the most dense categories and probably
one of the most commonly talked about categories. People often make comments about being

organized into the following subsections: Major Depressive Disorder, Dysthymic Disorder, Depressive

For example, bipolar I disorder and bipolar II disorder are differentiated by the presence of a mixed or
manic episode. If a person diagnosed with bipolar II disorder develops a mixed or manic episode, then
his diagnosis should be changed to bipolar I Disorder. Another important differential diagnosis is
between a major depressive episode, a manic episode and a mixed episode. If a person experiences the
criteria to meet a major depressive episode and the criteria to meet a manic episode nearly every day
during a minimum of a one week period, then he will receive the mixed episode diagnosis.
Furthermore, the difference between a manic episode and a hypomanic episode is that the person in a
hypomanic episode is not experiencing a disturbance severe enough to warrant hospitalization or a
marked impairment in his occupational functioning or social life.
It is also imperative to note the difference between a major depressive episode and major depressive
disorder. Major depressive disorder is diagnosed when a patient has a history of one or more major
depressive episodes without a history of mixed, manic or hypomanic episodes. Major depressive
disorder is distinguished from dysthymic disorder because a patient with dysthymic disorder has less
severe, chronic depressive symptoms which have been present more days than they have been absent
for a period of two years (one year for children and adolescence). Patients who chronically have
hypomanic symptoms and depressive

Analysis Of George Berkeley s Philosophy
George Berkeley is considered one the greatest modern philosophers, yet when he is studied he is seen
as misguided and inaccurate. It seems that sometimes we study his errors more than his achievements.
Many critiques of Berkeley are results of misunderstanding Berkeley s philosophy. One very famous
critique is from Samuel Johnson who lived around the same time as Berkeley. Johnson kicked a stone
and said, I refute it thus . Why did Johnson believe he could refute Berkeley by kicking a stone? Did
he misunderstand Berkeley, and if not what did he mean by this?
To discover what Johnson meant we must first learn about what he was refuting. Berkeley has three
main beliefs: 1. Idealism: the only things that exist are minds and their ideas; 2. Phenomenalism:
Physicals objects are big collections of possible senses; and 3. Immaterialism: there is no such thing as
a physical substance (something that exists independently). With Berkeley s beliefs he has two
motivations: 1. to oppose skepticism and 2. to promote religion, Berkeley was a bishop of the
Anglican church so you can see why promoting religion was so important to him.
Berkeley was an empiricist. Empiricism is the theory that all knowledge is derived from sense
experiences. Some other famous empiricists are Thomas Locke and David Hume. Berkeley is thought
to be the bridge between Locke and Hume. Locke believed that primary qualities such as length,
shape, and motion existed in the world. While secondary qualities such

Road Mapping Emergence Of The Cell Phone
Road mapping emergence of the cell phone Trimonisha Das The Australian National University,
u5549946@anu.edu.au Abstract The purpose of this document is to investigate the innovation path for
a particular product or service of interest to the author and develop the emergence roadmap followed
to realise its commercial success. The emergence of cell phones has been identified as such a case
study in this paper. Keywords Technology evolution, innovation, cellular phone, emergence road
mapping. INTRODUCTION TO MOBILE PHONES Wireless communication has come a long way
since weighing around 1.1 kg in 1983 to the myriad of smartphones available in the market today that
are lightweight and loaded with endless features. But it all began towards the 20th century, when
telegraph and radio technology were evolving tremendously. The transatlantic telegraph was built by
1866. An affinity towards wireless communication was growing for a number of reasons: (i) Increased
mobility. (ii) No wiring. (iii) Remote access. (iv) Innovative solution. (v) Defence strategies. The
concept of mobile phones is based on a very sophisticated radio. Mobile phones have power run
transmitters in them. This power is supplied by a battery. A low power phone requires smaller battery
that allows use of hand held sets, which are not overly bulky. Transmitters convert voice/sound into
electrical signals sent over a frequency spectrum that are received at the station and converted back to

Child Labor Caused The Children
Damon Randazzo Ms. Wilkerson F Period 14 October 2014 Research paper In the early 1800 s
education was only available to certain people. The people who could not go to school had no choice
but to work for very low pay. Child labor started when factors were mostly ran by machines and not
by man power. Some of the jobs include mines, glass factories, agriculture, home industries,
newsboys, messengers, bootblacks, and peddlers. The owners of the factors would pay children to run
the machines because it was cheaper than paying adults. Child labor caused the children to have a very
bad childhood. They could be like normal children because they had to work all day and could not go
play outside with the neighborhood kids. In the early 1800 s only the wealthy children could go to
school and the poor children would have to work in factories. There were many different types of jobs
during the early 1800 s. Some of the jobs include mines, glass factories, agriculture, home industries,
newsboys, messengers, bootblacks, and peddlers. A job in a factor may consist of 12 to 18 hour days,
six days a week. Children could start working in factors as early as 7 years old. The working
conditions in the factors were often dark, damp, and dirty which made the children ill. The children
did not just work in factors they also worked in coal mines where it was very dirty and the children
often became ill. The children who worked as newsboys they brought all the paper, so t cost of any

Content Analysis Of The Media
There are numerous sources in which an individual can obtain information about current events
happening around the world; some produce content strictly on the pretense of political affiliation,
while others attempt to establish a more neutral footing, and others are simply more credible than
others. Only four examinations will be necessary to prove this, however: The New York Times, the
New York Post tabloid, the Richmond Times Dispatch, a local newspaper centered in Virginia, and
finally the Telegraph, a conservative leaning news source based in Britain. Each of these sources
provide an overwhelming amount of diversity on the issues they cover and the manner in which they
do so, format, and political ideology within their editorials and ... Show more content on

The New York Times was perhaps the most diverse of the four examples provided here. Their stories
covered issues happening all around the globe; such as the earth quake which just hit Mexico,
hurricane Maria, the United Nations Council meeting, North Korea, and most notably Donald Trump.
The New York Post however, was more geared towards the casual reader covering topics such as
celebrity gossip in the U.S. and occasionally a political issue here and there. The Telegraph focused
mainly on issues in England, especially the problems Parliament is facing with the Brexit decision and
internal conflicts between members Theresa May and Boris Johnson. The Richmond Times Dispatch
was circulating many articles concerning the removal of Confederate monuments as it is a pressing
issue for many people residing in the Southern states of the U.S. Other articles were very focused on
issues Virginian s were facing. Specific articles that had been written by the reporters of each website
varied, especially in contrast with work done by the New York Post. The New York Times in
discussing Trump on his statements made at the UN council meeting were not followed with words of
praise or condemnation, but rather felt factual and focused on informing rather than convincing.
However, in a article written by the New York Post concerning a Trump Victory Dinner to be hosted in
New York, albeit short, had subtle discontent with the actions of the president ensuring to note that he

PREDICTIONS
1. Exceeding the threshold depolarization at the trigger zone DECREASES the likelihood of
generation of action potential.
2. Action potential amplitude: DOES NOT CHANGE with distance
3. Increasing frequency of stimulation to the trigger zone: DOES NOT increase the production of
action potentials.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Experiment 1: Effect of Stimulus Strength on Action Potential Generation
1. Dependent Variable Membrane potential
2. Independent Variable
Stimulus strength (voltage)
3. Controlled Variables

Action potentials can occur more frequently as long there is a continued source of stimulation, as long
as the relative refractory period has been reached, which in experiment 2 the refractory period was
complete.
5. Restate your predictions that were correct and give the data from your experiment that supports
them. Restate your predictions that were not correct and correct them, giving the data from your
experiment that supports the correction.
1) Exceeding threshold depolarization does not change the likelihood of an action potential being
produced, Due to the need for a refractory period this is (all or nothing) In the experiment from 6V 8V
in the axon hillock the difference in amplitude went from 30.2 to 30.9 (not a remarkable increase)
2) Amplitude does not change with distance. . From the experiment, the action potential amplitude
does NOT change as it propagates down the axon. (The change was small at 0.4, 0.2) 3) Increasing
frequency of stimulation of the trigger zone does not increases the production of the action potentials.
This goes back to the threshold All or nothing theory.
APPLICATION
1. ECF potassium levels affect resting membrane potential. Hyperkalemia (excessive levels of
potassium in the blood) and hypokalemia (abnormally low blood potassium levels) both affect the
function of nerves and muscles.

Themes In All Quiet On The Western Front
Lost Generation on the Western Front In the novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria
Remarque demonstrates, through the character of Paul Baumer, how World War I was one of the
bloodiest wars in history. With more than 18 million deaths and 23 million wounded, it left a lasting
memory to many. Most of these men were young, so many of the men that came back after the war
had mental issues and were lost with society. Such things like Kemmerich s boots, the red poppies,
and the senselessness of the war itself. All of these teenagers that took on war at a very young age
were known in history as the lost generation . In the beginning of the war, many of these young
soldiers including Paul and his friends did not know what to expect. As the come into camp they
notice all the little things, such as the butterflies, white clouds, the red poppies in the field, and as the
wind plays with our hair (9). The red poppies in the field symbolizes the bloody mess the great war
gave. To what the great war gave, was nothing. These men as they were now called lost everything
they learned and if they would ever go back, they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first of the Iron Youth to die was Franz Kemmerich. Kemmerich was the one who had a horrific
death, he was shot in the leg and it was amputated. As Kemmerich s leg lies under a wire basket (14),
he still feels the pain in his foot, and the boys know that he will die or go back home. Muller, a young
man a part of the Iron Youth, is delighted with the sight of Kemmerich s boots that he asks for them,
but Franz is confused because he still is thinking that he is just fine when he is not. This all meant that
even the boots, such a small thing in the war means so much to them. Having this pair of boots gave
these men a sense of hope and that represents how lost all these young men

Date: September 28, 2013
Youth 201 Section #B01
What I Have Learned? (at least two full pages)
During this second observation at Coastal Grand Mall in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, I learned
many things. I went to this location on a Saturday night, where it was full of young people. The
weather outside was warm, but rainy, so I believe this caused even more people to look for indoor fun,
so the mall was packed on this Saturday night.
I began my observation in the food court, which is near the movie theatre. This is definitely a hot spot
in the mall for young people. I got something to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another thing I noticed about the young people at the mall that night was the language they used! I
was completely appalled at the way these young people were speaking. As the young people moved
about around me, I couldn t believe some of the words that were coming out of their mouths. I realize
that these are young people and they are still trying to figure themselves out and fit in, but I honestly
did not realize that young people spoke this way. It was very difficult for me not to speak up at that
point and ask them to please not use that type of language. This made me realize the negativity that
must be going on in their minds and hearts. This really opened my eyes to the actions of young people
that I wasn t aware of.
Seeing the way these young people were acting, dressing, and speaking made me realize, to an even
greater degree, how important youth ministry is. These young people broke my heart that night as I
realized how lost they must be. Many of them probably didn t grow up in loving homes. Many of them
may not even have homes to go to when they left the mall that night. What is truly heartbreaking is
that many of them may have never had anyone share the Gospel with them. Their actions that night
are only a result of the environment they ve grown up in. I tried to imagine the home life some of
them came from. As I attempted to look deeper, I wondered which

Examples Of Dystopia In 1984
Dystopia and Science Fiction A dystopia is a imagined universe in which oppressive societal control
and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological,
moral, or totalitarian control. Dystopias, through an exaggerated worst case scenario, make a criticism
about a current trend, societal norm, or political system. Some of the traits in a dystopian character is
that the character feels that something s wrong. Also, if the character question the society and political
system. In 1984 the main character Winston starts by walking down a hallway and sees a big poster
with a face on it and the words Big Brothers is Watching You. Then, when Winston is walking he sees
the a helicopter flying between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These values were questioned when Winston noticed that a helicopter was spying on people through
the windows. In the far distance a helicopter skimmed down between the roofs, hovered for an instant
like a bluebottle, and darted away again with matter, however. Only the Thought Police mattered
(Orwell 4). The government spies on people to make sure there not doing anything illegal. Winston
challenged the authorities by writing in a book when he knows if he gets caught he would be
punished. The thing that he was about to do was to open a diary. This was not illegal (nothing was
illegal, since there were no longer any laws), but if detected it was reasonably certain that it would be
punished by death, or at least by twenty five years in a forced labour camp (9). This shows that
Winston is challenging the authorities because he s writing in a book and knows that if he gets caught
that he could possibly die. The author was trying to say about the darkside of technology is that the
more it improves the essayer the government can spy on people. This can be shown today because
when a person posts something on the internet everyone can see it. I think that it is good that the
government has a good control on people so we are safe but if they have too much power the people
won t have any freedom. I also think the author thinks there should be less government

Analysis Of The Poem I Hell And Back
Audie Murphy, one of the most well recognized and most decorated soldiers of the United States
Army of World War II, participated in two battles which earned him respect and awards. The first, his
efforts in taking Yellow Beach of southern France, earned him the Distinguished Service Cross. The
second, in a battle outside of Holtzwihr, France, earned him the Medal of Honor. Not only are these
events well documented for official records, they appear in his autobiography To Hell and Back,
ghostwritten by David Spec McClure with Murphy providing details, along with various sources
which include family scrapbooks, the accounts of soldiers who served with Murphy which they gave
for his medal citations, and a recently published History of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This account, so far, squares with an account by Staff Sergeant Norman Hollen, also of Company B.
Not mentioned in Hollen s account was Murphy s killing of two Germans who he stumbled across
before finding the light machine gun, a fact which both Smith s and Graham s accounts mention .
The accounts do seem to differ in that Murphy describes machine gun fire being responsible for
Tipton s death while Hollen suggests it was a sniper . Graham supports Murphy s assertion of machine
gun fire being the cause of Tipton s death, as he places the blame not on a sniper in the house, but on
the machine gun nest which Murphy storms . Meanwhile, David Smith, writer of The Price of Valor,
sides with Hollen, claiming a single sniper shot was responsible for Tipton s death. Two schools of
thought appeared in the literature about what occurred and there seems no way of reconciling them.
However, Smith claims that Murphy said that it was a sniper, not a machine gun, contradicting the
narrative of To Hell and Back.
Murphy s and Graham s accounts seem to show that he did not use his carbine, while Hollen and
Smith both claim that Murphy killed the two Germans who had approached with the flag of surrender
with his carbine. Murphy, Smith, and Graham all agree that Murphy carried a German machine gun
which he had captured like a BAR and fired it from the hip as he proceeded up the hill. This detail
wasn t mentioned by Hollen, who

The National Football League Is The Most Popular Sport
The National Football League is the most popular sport in America. The NFL is the most lucrative
sports business in the world by generating 9 billion dollars a year. For whatever reason peoples eyes
are glued to the television every Sunday, whether it be to root on their hometown team or to follow
their fantasy football team. The league has been under fire for the safety of the players for a very long
time, but more so in the last couple of years. The biggest part of the scrutiny is that repeated head
trauma can cause long term brain damage. The rules must change in the game of football because it
has become too dangerous and creates a long term threat to players. Equipment has improved
tremendously over the years to help with the safety ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A helmet hit from Morris Badgro in the 1930 would lay down players with 970 pounds of force and a
helmet hit from the current player Holati Ngata unleashes 1700 pounds of force.
The National Football League is constantly working on making the game safer. There needs to be a
waiver in the contract of the players that prevents them suing the league for any post career health
issues. If the players were not part of the National Football League Players Association, a labor union
for the players, the waiver would already be in place. The players union says that it would be against
the collective bargaining agreement for the NFL to come up with such waiver (cite.) The waiver
probably stems from the lawsuits against the NFL by former players. The number of suits continues to
grow with the largest one being nearly 800 million dollars. The former players accused the league of
hiding the long term effects of concussions and rushing players back onto the field, while profiting
from the games violence. There have been multiple players who have been on the NFL s side and said
that they would be willing to sign a waiver saying that they would not sue the league if any post
football health issues occurred.
There have been much needed changes on the field to change the safety of the game. The changes
have drawn a lot of criticism. A friend of mine refers to it as the No Fun League instead of the
National Football league, but this is what has to happen

  • 2. Deaf Culture Deaf Culture In mainstream American society, we tend to approach deafness as a defect. Helen Keller is alleged to have said, Blindness cuts people off from things; deafness cuts people off from people. (rnib.org) This seems a very accurate description of what Keller s world must have been. We as hearing people tend to pity deaf people, or, if they succeed in the hearing world, admire them for overcoming a severe handicap. We tend to look at signing as an inferior substitute for real communication. We assume that all deaf people will try to lip read and we applaud deaf people who use their voices to show us how far they have come from the grips of their disability. ASL also avoids one of the biggest scourges of English: the pronoun problem, the tendency of English speakers to use he as a generic singular pronoun representing any unknown person, male or female. However, once a person is mentioned in an ASL conversation, she is given a location in space which represents her for the remainder of the conversation. Different ways of pointing to this location can indicate the number of people who occupy it, and their role in the conversation but not their sex. (aslinfo.com) Because about 90% of Deaf people are born to hearing parents, they absorb their culture from their peers, not their families. Most Deaf children who attend residential schools for the deaf pick up ASL from their classmates. Because of this source of cultural identity, one of the first questions Deaf people ask upon meeting each other is where they went to school and who their teachers were. In this way, the Deaf community can become very close knit, as each member becomes familiar with residential schools in various regions of the country. Deaf culture also places a great deal of emphasis on physical contact. Hugging is far more common than shaking hands, especially when parting. Theatre is a lively subject, enabling us to take written language and add it with human emotion to receive a fascinating presentation that captivates the audience and the actors alike. Being up on stage has a plethora of benefits but comes with many responsibilities as well. As a member of the Maplewood Richmond Heights High School, I am responsible for recognizing what I am responsible for, what my standards are, and what my expectations for my peers in this class should be. As a citizen, a steward, a leader, and a scholar, I should uphold others experiences in this class in addition to my own. To do this, I will need to actively engage in classroom activities every day and be present. By doing these things, I will ensure that I be an active participant in the Theatre I learning experience. In addition, I can also contribute expertise, caring, and commitment to the class so that it can function correctly as a team. • 5. Examples Of Id, Ego, And Superego In Mary Shelley s... According to modern psychologists, Sigmund Freud is considered the father of modern psychology; Freud s idea of the three zones of the psychic apparatus play a heavy influence in Mary Shelley s Frankenstein. The three zones are Id, Ego, and Superego. The Id is natural instincts, Ego is the influence of the Id caused by society, and the Superego is acting based off of adopted morals taught to you. The Monster s personality traits in Frankenstein are examples of Freud s idea of Id, Ego, and Superego. Throughout the novel, each trait is developed with the Id being first ; and alternating back and forth between all of them on which one becomes the dominant trait. When the Monster is first created, he acts on natural instincts to keep himself alive. The Monster must figure out life on his own because he does not have a parental figure to teach him right from wrong. The Id instincts take over the Monster s actions I ate some berries...I slaked my thirst at the brook (Shelley 87). He is predominantly motivated by his self centered id drives due to his natural instincts of survival. The Monster has no idea that some of his actions are believed to be immoral by society because his libidinous id is telling him what to do to survive such as to steal a part of their store in my own consumption (94). • 6. Confucius And Confucianism Confucius s philosophical teachings about government and society discussed in the Analects revolve around morality and how a ruler and his people should act in order to stabilize society. Confucius looked to the past to discuss the problems of the present by modeling his teachings from the former Zhou empire. Confucius sought to bring back the Zhou traditions in order to better society. By linking moral behaviors to social roles and hierarchies, he emphasized that the stability of the government and society was directly correlated to the relationship between the ruler and the people. With the title Son of Heaven, the ruler was expected to act morally towards his subjects and treat them with love and concern ( Introduction to Confucian Thought , 2009). This idea is directly related to the concept of ren, which discusses the well being of others as the moral drive of society. He extended this idea into social harmony, being first and foremost embedded in the family. Confucius believed that the virtue of filial piety was the foundation for not just family life but also had implication for the ruler subject bond ( Mencius and his development of Confucian teachings , n.d.). Similarly, Mencius centered his teachings on this idea by stressing that the well being of the family directly corresponded to the well being of the state. Behind him was a disjointed foreign and confused domestic policy. When he left office, Carter s approval rating was 34 percent, and his disapproval rating nearly twice that (Roper Center). Today, it seems that he is a better ex President than he was a president, as evidenced in his founding of the Carter Center, his cultivation of his presidential library, his contributions to Habitat for Humanity, and his numerous other humanitarian efforts. During his term, he had a poor relationship with Congress, a low approval rating with the American people, and a lack of cohesive international or domestic policy. I believe his two greatest failures are also the two which marked his entire presidency and caused the drop in his approval ratings: the confused and faltering domestic and international policies which lasted throughout his presidency and the Iran Hostage Crisis. Jimmy Carter was a one term president who won on a campaign of being not Washington and not Gerald Ford (Hargrove, 1988). Shortly after entering office, his refusal to trade political favors with members of Congress, unwillingness to learn the rules of Washington politics and play by them, and the general lack of communication between his administration and Congress stalled any possible working relationship. For example, in the case of the monster, the way in which he reacted in hopes of potentially getting Victor to create him a mate led Victor to believe that it would be trouble to create a partner for him. The Role Of Communication In The Domestication Of Cats Domestication of cats began 9,500 years ago based on the carcass of a cat carefully laid at an ancient Cyprus burial site next to a human being. Humans had already begun domestication other animals such as dogs prior (Serpell, 2014). Cats became useful after humans settled and kept grains in stores, which attracted mice. Using their predating skills to eradicate the mice they slowly self domesticated themselves into man s home and heart. The cats adapted to the human environment by evolving some of their behavior and abandoning their aggressive wild born behaviors which transformed some cats from being feral to being pets. The three main sensory mediums for cats communication are visual, vocal and scent. Vocal communications in cats strengthen the visual signals. Zehmer, the courts focus for upholding Lucy s claim of assent, thus, establishing a legal and binding contract to purchase Zehmer s farm for $50,000, was established in part due to the conditions of objective intent being met. The court discerned that Lucy s objective intent was founded in the fact that Lucy had every intention of meeting the conditions of the mutually negotiated and accepted contract which was written and signed by both parties. In establishing the objective intent, the court only needed to look at whether or not the contract would be deemed as such by a reasonable person (Bethel University, 2011, pp. 178 179). 2. In order for the court to determine that a contract did not exist between Lucy and Zehmer, a few key indicators would have to be changed, the first of which is mutual assent . By definition, mutual assent is achieved when both parties come to an agreement by means of an offer and acceptance of said offer. If Zehmer had simply not accepted the offer made by Lucy then mutual assent would not have occurred, which would have resulted in the court being unable to establish that a valid contract existed between the two parties (Bethel University, 2011, pp. 178 179). With the freedom to make our decisions comes the responsibilty to not only know but also to understand the effects of them. Every action has a reaction, and sin is the reaction to free will. Niebuhr holds that man is responsible for his unintentional sins, even if there was no malice. Encyclopaedia Britannica (2009) cautions that cult worship is so universal in religion that some historians of religion actually define religion as cult. From the definitions given so far, we can deduce that cultism/cult, secret cult and secret society are secret groups of people whose members are bound on an oath to keep the activities of each and every member secret. It is also safe to say that cult fraternity may be violent or beneficial to the society, depending on the objectives of the members. For example, some secret cults are formed to provide benevolent services while others are formed due to political reasons to protect the interest of the society. Watanabe does the uncommon and goes against the norm, in order to follow his passion and not follow strictly what tradition would want. In this film, the traditional family home is absent because of the main character being a widower. Since he maintains the role of breadwinner he has an estranged relationship with his only child as well as a generational gap. The Japanese are very observant of ancient traditions such as Buddhism and Shintoism. Ikiru, which means to live is directed by Akira Kurosawa, is based in postwar Japan during their reconstruction. With the end of the middle of the second nine weeks rapidly approaching so too are classroom summative assignments. During my visit on the twentieth I was able to both see the test creation process in a PLC and participate in the creation of some questions. Two of the three teacher I have been able to spend time with in the classroom, the first being in internship and the second, Mrs. Casanova with service learning. Both teachers employ direct instruction as their primary means of conveying information, with Mrs. Casanova using it more than the honors and AP teachers. However, within the PLC the test questions were being created for all classes, rather than having separate questions for AP, honors, and regular classes, with the only difference being the written response questions being more challenging in upper classes. Due to this, content evidence was very important, especially for the upper classes, as they technically would be getting the same test as a regular. Beyond this however, the instruction leading up to the test also had to be evaluated as the questions were made with AP in mind. According to the book, content evidence connects to state standards and what the students need to know based off this, which should be reflected within the instruction (pg. 396). Why Is In Cold Blood Be Banned Violence in mass media has been constantly discussed in the past twenty years as a reasoning for teenage violence against others, between video games such as Doom and Call of Duty , movies such as Fight Club , Scream , American Psycho , and Natural Born Killers and social media dehumanizing acts of violence. Many parents have labeled anything that is not family friendly as a root cause of criminal behavior. Others also blame the amount of violence in media now as unhealthy to young people, solely because many don t know the line of what is real and not real. In Capote s novel, he describes the motives of the killers and their backstory in order to help humanize them. Some may say that because of both the violence and the humanization of the killers, the book should be banned. The patient had broken his hip and was undergoing surgery to place screws and plates into his hip. I was able to see the whole process through the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative stages. The preoperative stage is when the patient comes to the OR and is being prepped for the surgery. The patient is verified by the nurse, who needs to check patient identification, patient records and make sure is calm for the surgery. Before this particular surgery, the anesthesiologist came down before the surgery to administer a block to the patient. He created a system in which State power is broken into two parts; hard power and soft power. Hard power consists of the traditional, tangible aspects of power namely, military and economic power. Soft power consists of all other facets of power, such as ideology, foreign policy, culture, stability, prosperity, and membership in international organizations (Bound to Lead 130 and Paradox xi, 8). The modern world is becoming more interconnected and interdependent with one another, hence depending less on sticks and carrots and more on soft power. If a person diagnosed with bipolar II disorder develops a mixed or manic episode, then his diagnosis should be changed to bipolar I Disorder. If a person experiences the criteria to meet a major depressive episode and the criteria to meet a manic episode nearly every day during a minimum of a one week period, then he will receive the mixed episode diagnosis. Furthermore, the difference between a manic episode and a hypomanic episode is that the person in a hypomanic episode is not experiencing a disturbance severe enough to warrant hospitalization or a marked impairment in his occupational functioning or social life. It seems that sometimes we study his errors more than his achievements. Many critiques of Berkeley are results of misunderstanding Berkeley s philosophy. One very famous critique is from Samuel Johnson who lived around the same time as Berkeley. Johnson kicked a stone and said, I refute it thus . Why did Johnson believe he could refute Berkeley by kicking a stone? Did he misunderstand Berkeley, and if not what did he mean by this? To discover what Johnson meant we must first learn about what he was refuting. Berkeley has three main beliefs: 1. Idealism: the only things that exist are minds and their ideas; 2. Phenomenalism: Physicals objects are big collections of possible senses; and 3. Immaterialism: there is no such thing as a physical substance (something that exists independently). With Berkeley s beliefs he has two motivations: 1. to oppose skepticism and 2. to promote religion, Berkeley was a bishop of the Anglican church so you can see why promoting religion was so important to him. Berkeley was an empiricist. Empiricism is the theory that all knowledge is derived from sense experiences. Some other famous empiricists are Thomas Locke and David Hume. • 44. Child Labor Caused The Children Damon Randazzo Ms. Wilkerson F Period 14 October 2014 Research paper In the early 1800 s education was only available to certain people. The people who could not go to school had no choice but to work for very low pay. Child labor started when factors were mostly ran by machines and not by man power. Some of the jobs include mines, glass factories, agriculture, home industries, newsboys, messengers, bootblacks, and peddlers. The owners of the factors would pay children to run the machines because it was cheaper than paying adults. Child labor caused the children to have a very bad childhood. They could be like normal children because they had to work all day and could not go play outside with the neighborhood kids. In the early 1800 s only the wealthy children could go to school and the poor children would have to work in factories. There were many different types of jobs during the early 1800 s. Some of the jobs include mines, glass factories, agriculture, home industries, newsboys, messengers, bootblacks, and peddlers. A job in a factor may consist of 12 to 18 hour days, six days a week. Children could start working in factors as early as 7 years old. The working conditions in the factors were often dark, damp, and dirty which made the children ill. The children did not just work in factors they also worked in coal mines where it was very dirty and the children often became ill. • 45. Content Analysis Of The Media There are numerous sources in which an individual can obtain information about current events happening around the world; some produce content strictly on the pretense of political affiliation, while others attempt to establish a more neutral footing, and others are simply more credible than others. Only four examinations will be necessary to prove this, however: The New York Times, the New York Post tabloid, the Richmond Times Dispatch, a local newspaper centered in Virginia, and finally the Telegraph, a conservative leaning news source based in Britain. Each of these sources provide an overwhelming amount of diversity on the issues they cover and the manner in which they do so, format, and political ideology within their editorials and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The New York Times was perhaps the most diverse of the four examples provided here. Their stories covered issues happening all around the globe; such as the earth quake which just hit Mexico, hurricane Maria, the United Nations Council meeting, North Korea, and most notably Donald Trump. The New York Post however, was more geared towards the casual reader covering topics such as celebrity gossip in the U.S. and occasionally a political issue here and there. The Telegraph focused mainly on issues in England, especially the problems Parliament is facing with the Brexit decision and internal conflicts between members Theresa May and Boris Johnson. The Richmond Times Dispatch was circulating many articles concerning the removal of Confederate monuments as it is a pressing issue for many people residing in the Southern states of the U.S. Other articles were very focused on issues Virginian s were facing. Specific articles that had been written by the reporters of each website varied, especially in contrast with work done by the New York Post. The New York Times in discussing Trump on his statements made at the UN council meeting were not followed with words of praise or condemnation, but rather felt factual and focused on informing rather than convincing. However, in a article written by the New York Post concerning a Trump Victory Dinner to be hosted in New York, albeit short, had subtle discontent with the actions of the president ensuring to note that he rarely ... • 47. 1) Exceeding threshold depolarization does not change the likelihood of an action potential being produced, Due to the need for a refractory period this is (all or nothing) In the experiment from 6V 8V in the axon hillock the difference in amplitude went from 30.2 to 30.9 (not a remarkable increase) 2) Amplitude does not change with distance. . From the experiment, the action potential amplitude does NOT change as it propagates down the axon. (The change was small at 0.4, 0.2) 3) Increasing frequency of stimulation of the trigger zone does not increases the production of the action potentials. This goes back to the threshold All or nothing theory. APPLICATION 1. ECF potassium levels affect resting membrane potential. Themes In All Quiet On The Western Front Lost Generation on the Western Front In the novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque demonstrates, through the character of Paul Baumer, how World War I was one of the bloodiest wars in history. With more than 18 million deaths and 23 million wounded, it left a lasting memory to many. Most of these men were young, so many of the men that came back after the war had mental issues and were lost with society. Such things like Kemmerich s boots, the red poppies, and the senselessness of the war itself. All of these teenagers that took on war at a very young age were known in history as the lost generation . In the beginning of the war, many of these young soldiers including Paul and his friends did not know what to expect. As the come into camp they notice all the little things, such as the butterflies, white clouds, the red poppies in the field, and as the wind plays with our hair (9). The red poppies in the field symbolizes the bloody mess the great war gave. To what the great war gave, was nothing. Muller, a young man a part of the Iron Youth, is delighted with the sight of Kemmerich s boots that he asks for them, but Franz is confused because he still is thinking that he is just fine when he is not. This all meant that even the boots, such a small thing in the war means so much to them. Having this pair of boots gave these men a sense of hope and that represents how lost all these young men ... (at least two full pages) During this second observation at Coastal Grand Mall in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, I learned many things. I went to this location on a Saturday night, where it was full of young people. The weather outside was warm, but rainy, so I believe this caused even more people to look for indoor fun, so the mall was packed on this Saturday night. I began my observation in the food court, which is near the movie theatre. This is definitely a hot spot in the mall for young people. I got something to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another thing I noticed about the young people at the mall that night was the language they used! I was completely appalled at the way these young people were speaking. As the young people moved about around me, I couldn t believe some of the words that were coming out of their mouths. I realize that these are young people and they are still trying to figure themselves out and fit in, but I honestly did not realize that young people spoke this way. It was very difficult for me not to speak up at that point and ask them to please not use that type of language. This made me realize the negativity that must be going on in their minds and hearts. This really opened my eyes to the actions of young people that I wasn t aware of. Seeing the way these young people were acting, dressing, and speaking made me realize, to an even greater degree, how important youth ministry is. These young people broke my heart that night as I realized how lost they must be. Many of them probably didn t grow up in loving homes. Many of them may not even have homes to go to when they left the mall that night. What is truly heartbreaking is that many of them may have never had anyone share the Gospel with them. Their actions that night are only a result of the environment they ve grown up in. I tried to imagine the home life some of them came from. As I attempted to look deeper, I wondered which ... • 50. Examples Of Dystopia In 1984 Dystopia and Science Fiction A dystopia is a imagined universe in which oppressive societal control and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological, moral, or totalitarian control. Dystopias, through an exaggerated worst case scenario, make a criticism about a current trend, societal norm, or political system. Some of the traits in a dystopian character is that the character feels that something s wrong. Also, if the character question the society and political system. In 1984 the main character Winston starts by walking down a hallway and sees a big poster with a face on it and the words Big Brothers is Watching You. Then, when Winston is walking he sees the a helicopter flying between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These values were questioned when Winston noticed that a helicopter was spying on people through the windows. In the far distance a helicopter skimmed down between the roofs, hovered for an instant like a bluebottle, and darted away again with matter, however. Only the Thought Police mattered (Orwell 4). The government spies on people to make sure there not doing anything illegal. Winston challenged the authorities by writing in a book when he knows if he gets caught he would be punished. The thing that he was about to do was to open a diary. This was not illegal (nothing was illegal, since there were no longer any laws), but if detected it was reasonably certain that it would be punished by death, or at least by twenty five years in a forced labour camp (9). This shows that Winston is challenging the authorities because he s writing in a book and knows that if he gets caught that he could possibly die. The author was trying to say about the darkside of technology is that the more it improves the essayer the government can spy on people. This can be shown today because when a person posts something on the internet everyone can see it. I think that it is good that the government has a good control on people so we are safe but if they have too much power the people won t have any freedom. I also think the author thinks there should be less government ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 51. Analysis Of The Poem I Hell And Back Audie Murphy, one of the most well recognized and most decorated soldiers of the United States Army of World War II, participated in two battles which earned him respect and awards. The first, his efforts in taking Yellow Beach of southern France, earned him the Distinguished Service Cross. The second, in a battle outside of Holtzwihr, France, earned him the Medal of Honor. Not only are these events well documented for official records, they appear in his autobiography To Hell and Back, ghostwritten by David Spec McClure with Murphy providing details, along with various sources which include family scrapbooks, the accounts of soldiers who served with Murphy which they gave for his medal citations, and a recently published History of ... Not mentioned in Hollen s account was Murphy s killing of two Germans who he stumbled across before finding the light machine gun, a fact which both Smith s and Graham s accounts mention . The accounts do seem to differ in that Murphy describes machine gun fire being responsible for Tipton s death while Hollen suggests it was a sniper . Graham supports Murphy s assertion of machine gun fire being the cause of Tipton s death, as he places the blame not on a sniper in the house, but on the machine gun nest which Murphy storms . Meanwhile, David Smith, writer of The Price of Valor, sides with Hollen, claiming a single sniper shot was responsible for Tipton s death. Two schools of thought appeared in the literature about what occurred and there seems no way of reconciling them. However, Smith claims that Murphy said that it was a sniper, not a machine gun, contradicting the narrative of To Hell and Back. Murphy s and Graham s accounts seem to show that he did not use his carbine, while Hollen and Smith both claim that Murphy killed the two Germans who had approached with the flag of surrender with his carbine. Murphy, Smith, and Graham all agree that Murphy carried a German machine gun which he had captured like a BAR and fired it from the hip as he proceeded up the hill. The NFL is the most lucrative sports business in the world by generating 9 billion dollars a year. For whatever reason peoples eyes are glued to the television every Sunday, whether it be to root on their hometown team or to follow their fantasy football team. The league has been under fire for the safety of the players for a very long time, but more so in the last couple of years. The biggest part of the scrutiny is that repeated head trauma can cause long term brain damage. The rules must change in the game of football because it has become too dangerous and creates a long term threat to players. A helmet hit from Morris Badgro in the 1930 would lay down players with 970 pounds of force and a helmet hit from the current player Holati Ngata unleashes 1700 pounds of force. The National Football League is constantly working on making the game safer. There needs to be a waiver in the contract of the players that prevents them suing the league for any post career health issues. If the players were not part of the National Football League Players Association, a labor union for the players, the waiver would already be in place. The players union says that it would be against the collective bargaining agreement for the NFL to come up with such waiver (cite.) The waiver probably stems from the lawsuits against the NFL by former players. The number of suits continues to grow with the largest one being nearly 800 million dollars. The former players accused the league of hiding the long term effects of concussions and rushing players back onto the field, while profiting from the games violence. There have been multiple players who have been on the NFL s side and said that they would be willing to sign a waiver saying that they would not sue the league if any post football health issues occurred.
