1. QUESTION SEVEN
Looking back at your
preliminary task, what do
you feel you have learnt
in the progression from
it to the full product?
2. PRELIMINARY
TASK:
From the peer assessment feedback I got back when I
initially completed this task, there were 3 areas of
strength in my preliminary magazine cover: the use of
yellow and white, the main image, and the cover
stories. I used the colour yellow to reflect the colour of
the FCHS badge, which is yellow and blue. This creates
a sense of familiarity for the audience reading the
magazine, and it makes them feel welcomed by the
school through the magazine. The main image was of
a 6th Form student outside the 6th Form Centre at the
school. The main image’s strength was that the model
is wearing a suit, which fits with the cover story
‘Exclusive: Inside Canon Parsons’, and the slogan
‘Grant That We May Be Truly Wise’.
An area of improvement for the preliminary task was
that the barcode and pricing were too large on the
front cover, which detracts from the main image and
the cover stories. A barcode and price tag adds
professionalism to the magazine cover but in various
other examples of magazine covers, they are usually
smaller and come across as being more natural to the
cover. I agree with these areas for improvement that
my peer assessor gave me as they were valid.
Looking back at this preliminary task I have definitely
progressed in my understanding of the various
technologies needed to create a magazine cover, and I
feel I have learnt a lot during the production of all 3 of
my media products.
3. With both the preliminary and final cover page’s side-by-side, my progression is very clear.
The masthead in the preliminary task was very basic along with the coverlines, both having
unoriginal font and in the foreground of a jarring black background. The masthead is clear
on the prelim but my final product’s masthead is noticeably better with a clearer, more
conventional font for a music magazine. The masthead is bold and pops off the page on the
final product which is likewise with the coverlines, as they too both look better and are more
sophisticated. The coverlines do not have a black background and because of that, it comes
across as more natural. The overall colour and presentation of the masthead and coverlines is
more vibrant and lively in my final product whereas when looking at the prelim, it looks more
drab and lifeless. I also made both the barcode and price smaller, fitting conventions.
The main image is also much better on the
final product. The prelim’s image was a long
shot but the model was too far away from the
camera looking back at it. The image on the
final product is a medium shot and is looking
directly at the camera through the sunglasses
and has a suave style, something I wanted to
get across in my final product. The model
takes up much of the page which makes him
the main attraction on the page, whereas the
prelim model was at a distance.
I scraped having a logo on the front cover for my final product as I thought with the title of the
magazine already there, the logo does not need to be on the front cover. I also featured a sticker on
the page just to fit further with the conventions. The slogan and date for my final cover page were
made smaller too, as they would of drawn the attention away from the main image.
