2. I incorporated several techniques into my magazine in order to
attract/address my target audience, one of which was including well known
and popular artists in the skyline i.e. Drake, The Weeknd, Rhianna, etc.
These artists are highly acclaimed globally and due to their ever expanding
fan bases, they can help bring a similar and new audience to the magazine.
I included topics such as Usher discussing
his new album and how Rhianna has sold out
Wembley, whilst on a UK tour. I also included
new and upcoming artists to the cover. As my
magazine is for teenagers/young adults, I
wanted the content of my magazine to be
current and relatable to them. Therefore,
coverlines and stories such as these would
draw in my audience to my magazine,
encouraging them to purchase it.
The language I used when creating my magazine was crucial in
order to appeal to my target audience. My front cover had to be eye-
catching and entice the reader, therefore I used conventional
language techniques to attract my audience such as âEXCLUSIVEâ
and âUSHERâS NEW ALBUMâ on my cover page. For my cover page I
focused on small amounts of key text so that it did not detract from
my main image, the main feature of the cover page that draws the
reader in. I did not do this for my contents page however as the text
was the main attraction for that specific media product, as it details
the features and stories of my music magazine.
R&B/Hip-Hop magazines
are mostly aimed at
both Males and Females,
and is usually made clear
on the front cover, so that
the buyer is sure that the
magazine is for him/her. My
magazine is clearly for male
audiences as the artist is a
young male. This meets
conventions and in turn,
attracts the audience;
predominately the young
male audience.
3. The artist being a young male shows how he represents men aged 20-24 who
are of a similar lower working class background. The artistsâ use of materialistic
items i.e. Jordan trainers, Leviâs jeans, jewellery, etc. attract the social group of
people who fit with the âASPIRERSâ psychographic as they seek status and the
desire to be wealthy, like how many music artists of the R&B/Hip-Hop
magazine portray themselves. My artist displays his success to the audiences
through these various items and in turn, he attracts the audience as they
aspire to be as wealthy and suave as how he portrays himself.
The artist attracts this audience as he can serve as an aspirational figure for
young males of a lower working class background as due to his success in the
music industry, he has been able to overcome the generalisations and
prejudice people of his background are associated with.
4. Another way I attracted/addressed my audience was
by using a suitable model for my artist, and also that
he fitted the conventions of my magazine genre. I
chose a model that was in the same age range as my
target audience (13-25), in order for the magazine to
be even more attractable for my target audience. The
majority of the R&B/Hip-Hop genreâs audience are of
African origin, which is the same with my model who
is mixed race with African roots. Not only does the
model fit the conventions I intended to meet I believe
he has a typical R&B style and look, enhanced by
the suave and sophisticated clothing on the cover
page.
Looking at my primary research, I found that my target audience
are attracted to the front cover of music magazines because of
the colour schemes used and the featured celebrity. I used a
conventional colour scheme for my magazine and featured a
young, aspiring artist to challenge the conventions that it is
established artists that feature on magazine covers. Also, they
would like the inside content to be filled with celebrity gossip or
interviews, which is something my magazine does as seen on
the sticker for the cover page.
When choosing an attractable
name for my magazine
audiences tend to like titles
associated with the specific
genre i.e. âRolling Stoneâ for
Rock, for example. I chose
âRHYTHMâ as my title as,
despite being quite generic,
itâs associated with music.
