1. QUESTION SIX
What have you learnt
about technologies from
the process of
constructing this
product?
2. Throughout the creation of my media products I used various technologies to help make both my
products and my coursework, predominately using Photoshop. For example, below is the original
picture of my model for my cover page. The picture was taken in a studio, which is conventional of
artists on a music magazine cover page. The picture clearly needed editing: the flash glare on the
sunglasses and jewellery would be distracting to the reader. By using Photoshop I was able to mask
the flash glare by matching the colour of the sunglasses with the default colours on the software, and
used the brush tool to paint over the flash.
The original photo, when the model was not edited, looked out of place due to the flash of the camera,
so I adjusted the brightness/contrast to correct this. I changed the saturation levels too on the product
and now looking at the final product and comparing in to the original photo, the model feels that he is
actually a part of the cover
rather then someone that has
just been copied and pasted
on.
When cropping out the model
and placing him on the
magazine cover the hair too
looked out of place, as it had a
different background. I used
the rubber tool to edit and
smooth out the hair, and I’m
happy with the end product.
The final change I made using
this technology was changing
the gradient, which I believe
suits the magazine more.
3. The photo for my contents page was, like the cover page photo, taken in a studio with lighting from
the main light in the room. When creating my contents page there was not much I had to edit for the
photo other than cancelling out the flash glare from the camera. I wanted the colours to pop off the
page for my contents page so I increased both the brightness/contrast and the saturation levels so that
the blue and red were vibrant and rich. In doing this, it made the model look more lively too.
I developed my knowledge of Photoshop more when I learned how to make shapes and structures on
the software which I used to create the sticker for the ‘INTERVIEW WITH JO$HY’, a white circle to act
as a background for the ‘R’ (my magazines logo), and a blue rectangular structure to also act as a
background for the title of the page ‘CONTENTS’. I had used this tool previously on the cover page too.
4. The photos on my previous two media products had all been taken on an iPhone 6S, which is also the
device I took my Double Page Spread photo with. The photo was taken on my phone and after taking it
I changed the filter for the image, which is why it has a hazy/vibrant look to it. Using this filter
enhanced the colours on the picture, therefore colours such as the green from the grass and bushes
and the red of the bomber jacket pop off the page more. From this I learnt the various, all be it
limited, editing tools on my phone which helped develop my product. When putting this image on
Photoshop nothing had to be edited on the picture other than a slight adjustment to the saturation.
I used the website www.DaFont.com as a way to find and use fonts that fit the conventions of a
R&B/Hip-Hop. The website helped develop my understanding of the various technologies/websites
that can be used to improve my product. I abandoned the blue theme used in my cover and contents
page and used the colour red for the font, to correspond with the bomber jacket. Red is a colour that
connotes power and strength which relates to the photo but also passion, which links to my artist’s
passion for music. This was not the only site I experimented with when searching for fonts however, as
I also tried 1001.fonts but found more styles suited to my genre on DaFont.
The font for the
feature article is the
same one I used for
the covellines and the
contents on my
previous media
products but for the
readers to
differentiate between
my artist and the
interviewer, I put the
interviewers text in
red.
5. Another website I used during my research and
planning was www.prezi.com, a website that I
used to create a presentation on my initial music
genre: Rock. Using prezi showed me there was
more than one way to create a presentation rather
then using PowerPoint, and is a much more
interactive experience for the audience; the
presentations on prezi require the audience to
navigate through the separate sections. Another
website similar to prezi was www.emaze.com,
which was also an online presentation website but
I favoured prezi more.
