- #3 Welcome to the training module on Tyco Electronics’ Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable (QSFP) Interconnect System. This training module introduces Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable connectors, a high speed pluggable I/O interconnect system and its different components.
- #4 The Quad Small Form-factor Pluggable (QSFP) interconnect system is a four-channel package, offering 3 times the density of traditional SFP ports and supports speeds up to 10Gbps per channel (suitable for 8G Fiber Channel and 10G Ethernet). The system is ideal for switches, routers, and host bus adapters (HBAs) where bandwidth is essential. The QSFP connector is a 38 position 0.8mm pitch surface mount connector, available in pocket tape for pick and place application.
- #5 The QSFP family includes cages, connectors, and copper and optical cable assemblies for a complete solution, developed within the QSFP MSA (Multi-Source Agreement). QSFP Connector (1761987–9) and Cage Assemblies (1888781–1 or 2007145–1) are used to interconnect QSFP fiber optic or copper transceiver modules to host printed circuit boards. The EMI/dust cover (1888810–2) is used to prevent contaminants from entering the chassis and confine any EMI emissions when the transceiver is not installed.
- #6 Cages feature enhanced EMI springs that have been proven in the Tyco Electronics SFP product to effectively contain EMI between both cage-to-bezel and cage-to-module interfaces. Cages are available with options for riding heat sinks (similar to XFP) and lightpipes. Ganged (multi-port) cages are available for additional density gains. All cages use press-fit technology for board termination, and can be used in belly-to-belly (double-sided) applications. An XFP-style gasket is also supported to maintain the cage opening behind the bezel. All QSFP cages will accept copper cables, optical cables, and transceiver modules. The riding heatsinks is designed for thermal dissipation and available in various fin heights. In applications where heat dissipation is necessary, a heat sink can be used. Choose a heat sink that meets the needs of the specific application. These heatsinks are designed to be attached to the cage assembly using a clip.
- #7 The cage assembly serves as a housing for the connector and mating transceiver. It is a frame with compliant pins for mounting onto the host printed circuit board. The cage assembly features front perimeter electromagnetic interference (EMI) springs. These springs block any EMI emissions emanating from the transceiver when installed. There are two styles of EMI containment, through-bezel and behind-bezel. In through-bezel design, the cage assembly is designed to pass through the bezel as shown. The cage assembly transceiver locking latches hold the transceiver in place, and the hard stop controls the insertion depth of the transceiver. In behind-bezel design, the cage assembly is designed to be bezel mounted. The front flange provides a flat surface to contact the EMI gasket attached to the perimeter of the bezel cutout.
- #8 Both designs have locking latches to hold the transceiver in place, and the hard stop controls the insertion depth of the transceiver. However, the Behind-Bezel design allows the cage not to extend through bezel for stub-free module insertion and has a clean look at the faceplate .

- #11 Light pipes can be added to the various QSFP cage assembly. The light pipe can be used either with heat sinks or without, to transmit LED light from the host PCB through the bezel. The light pipes are made of clear polycarbonate.
- #12 When the light pipe is installed, both arms of the light pipe must be latched into the mounting holes on the rear of the cage assembly. The front of the light pipe must be latched into the light pipe bracket on the front of the cage. This will require applying slight pressure on the arms to pinch the pins inward. The light pipe should be aligned with the length–wise slots in the heat sink, if a heat sink is installed. The single light pipe has a neck that snaps down into the light pipe bracket on cage assembly. The double light pipe has a latching pin on the front crossbar that serves the same purpose. The pc board end of the pipe should sit above the indicator LED on the board.
- #13 As a general rule, any application involving large numbers of fibers is a candidate for high density interconnects. Tyco electronics offers ganged QSFP cages in 1x3 or 1x4 configurations targeted for higher density applications.
- #14 In ganged QSFP cages, each port has its own heatsinks, clips and tabs for lightpipe retention and positioning.
- #15 The QSFP connector is a 38 position 0.8mm pitch surface mount connector, available in pocket tape for pick and place application. This connector is part of the Tyco Electronics EVERCLEAR product family, which also includes connectors designed for Mini-SAS/SATA applications. It is designed for high speed signal integrity. The connectors are used in conjunction with QSFP Cage Assemblies to interconnect QSFP fiber optic or copper transceiver modules to host printed circuit boards. The connector contains right–angle surface mount contacts and features a card entry slot that accepts the 1.0 +0.1 mm thick integrated circuit card housed in the transceiver. Install the connector onto the host PCB according to Application Specification 114–13217.
- #16 The QSFP direct attach copper cable assembly is a low cost alternative for short reach 4X applications. The design allows for a serial data transmission up to the QDR rate of 10Gbps/lane, for an aggregate 40Gbps. QSFP cable assemblies are hot swappable and the programmed EEPROM signature enables the host to differentiate between a copper cable assembly and a fiber optic module. The mechanical design of the braid crimp ensures that EMI radiation is suppressed. Additionally, the copper cable acts as a natural heat sink. Low power consumption assists in making the passive copper cable assembly an economic solution for within rack, or rack-to-rack applications. Standard QSFP assemblies are offered in 26AWG and 28AWG.
- #17 The PARALIGHT active optical cable assemblies use state-of-the-art technology to provide cost effective high data throughput interconnects. The cables incorporate E/O and O/E conversion built into the connector shell to yield a dramatic improvement in PCB real estate utilization. Using 850nm VCSELS, it can be operated from 2.5 Gbps to 5 Gbps per channel with 10 Gbps per channel. At 5 Gbps this provides aggregate throughput of 20 Gbps in each direction. At 10 Gbps this provides aggregate throughput of 40 Gbps in each direction. They are available in lengths up to 100 meters using 50 micron fiber. The EOE circuitry is designed for use with 8B/10B encoded data streams, such as InfiniBand, Fibre Channel, and XAUI.
