Editor's Notes

  • #2 Welcome to the training module on the AM37x Sitara ™ Processors.
  • #3 This training module will introduce the AM37x Sitara ™ Processors & development tools.
  • #4 The Sitara microprocessor family features ARM® Cortex™-A8 and ARM9™-based solutions with performance ranging from 375 MHz to 1.5 GHz and beyond in future devices. By utilizing ARM processors and common peripheral sets, Sitara™ processors offer highly reusable software code bases that allow designers to easily scale within the product family. Multiple operating frequencies, 3-D graphics acceleration, multiple packaging options and temperature operating points further provide optimal flexibility to fit most application requirements. TI also provides low-cost development tools and free Linux and Windows® Embedded CE software base ports to accelerate both software and hardware development.
  • #5 Sitara ™ Processors are ideal for applications such as HVAC and building controls, Network appliances, Industrial automation, Point-of-service machines, Test and measurement, Medical instrumentation, Educational consoles, Industrial low power PCs, and many others.
  • #6 The portfolio of Sitara ™ microprocessors includes unique combinations of peripherals and accelerators to drive down system cost and expand connectivity options.
  • #7 Next-generation digital entertainment and mobile communications devices are driving the need for flexible high-performance processing solutions that can meet the needs of the low-power, cost sensitive markets. The need for a high performance processor that can meet both the demanding performance requirements of leading-edge consumer entertainment devices and the tight power requirements for advanced mobile products is clear. The Cortex-A8 processor is the highest performance, most power-efficient single core processor ever developed by ARM. With the ability to scale in speed from 600MHz to greater than 1GHz, the Cortex-A8 processor can meet the requirements for power optimized mobile devices with a power budget of less than 300mWand for performance optimized consumer applications requiring 2000 Dhrystone MIPS
  • #8 The AM37x generation of high-performance, applications processors are based on the enhanced device architecture and are integrated on TI's advanced 45-nm process technology. This architecture is designed to provide best in class ARM and Graphics performance while delivering low power consumption. The device can support numerous HLOS and RTOS solutions including Linux and Windows Embedded CE which are available directly from TI. Additionally, the device is fully backward compatible with previous Cortex™-A8 Sitara™ processors and OMAP™ processors.
  • #9 Here we show a simplified block diagram of AM37x processors. Besides ARM Cortex-A8 core, the processors are highly integrated peripheral set including USB Host ×3, USB 2.0 OTG, MMC/SD card interface ×3, 1.8-V input/output and display subsystem with LCD controller and video encoder with composite and S-video support. The display subsystem with picture-in-picture, color space conversion, rotation and resizing support provides flexibility to connect to LCD display for vibrant, crisp and high-resolution images. The AM3715 processor is also built in a 3-D graphics engine that delivers twice the graphics performance to enable fluid, complex 3-D rendering, picture-perfect graphics and increased graphical user interface (GUI) capabilities.
  • #10 The AM3703 processor supports a comprehensive set of peripherals to provide flexible and high-speed interfacing. Those peripherals contain high-speed USB2.0 host controller with three host ports each offering high-speed data transactions or full-speed/low-speed data transactions; high-speed USB2.0 OTG controller for high-speed data Controller transactions on a USB port with embedded DMA controller; MMC memory card, SD memory card, or SDIO cards interface. The display subsystem with picture-in-picture, color space conversion, rotation and resizing support provides flexibility to connect to LCD display for vibrant, crisp and high-resolution images.S
  • #11 The AM3715 processor builds on the AM3703 processor by integrating a 3-D graphics engine that delivers twice the graphics performance to enable fluid, complex 3-D rendering, picture-perfect graphics and increased graphical user interface (GUI) capabilities. The 3-D graphics accelerator ( SGX) subsystem is based on the POWERVR® SGX core from Imagination Technologies. SGX is a new generation of programmable PowerVR graphic cores. The SGX graphics accelerator efficiently processes a number of various multimedia data types concurrently. This is achieved using a multithreaded architecture using two levels of scheduling and data partitioning enabling zero overhead task switching.
  • #12 The highly integrated AM37x processors provide gigahertz performance while maintaining low power consumption for most power sensitive applications. They are suitable for a wide variety of applications, such as portable data terminals, portable medical equipment, home and building automation, navigation systems, smart displays and human machine interaction (HMI) industrial interfaces and other applications.
  • #13 Developed with Mistral, the AM/DM37x Evaluation Module (EVM) enables developers to immediately start evaluating AM37x or DM37x processors (DM3730, DM3725, AM3715, AM3703) and begin building solutions such as portable multimedia, portable data terminals, portable medical equipment, portable communications, home and building automation, navigation systems, test and measurement, smart displays and human machine interaction (HMI) industrial interfaces amongst many others.
