PURPOSE OF ASSESSMENT

Purpose of assesment
▪ The role of assessment is to enhance teaching
and improve student learning. Assessment must
be planned with its purpose in mind.
▪ Assessment for as and of learning all have a role
to play in supporting and improving student
learning.
▪ The most important part of assessment is the
interpretation and use of the information that is
gleaned for its intended purpose.

▪ Assessment is embedded in the learning
process. It is tightly inter connected with
curriculum and instruction.
▪ As teachers and students work towards the
achievement of curriculum outcomes,
assessment plays an important role in informing
instruction guiding the students next steps and
checking progress and achievement.
▪ Teachers use many different processes and
strategies for classroom assessment and adapt
them to suit the assessment purpose and
needs of individual students.

Different Functions of Assessment- for Students
▪ Diagnostic -to enable students to find
out their level of knowledge /
understanding at the beginning of a
course.
▪ Feedback- for students to determine
their progress in relation to the learning
outcomes of a course. 4
Learning Opportunities - to provide students with the
opportunities to develop their mastery of ideas practice
skills and competencies.
Self Evaluation- to encourage students to make
judgments about the quality of their own work.
Motivation- assessment tasks can enhance student
motivation by providing frameworks for developing,
reviewing or extending their understanding.

For teachers
▪ Diagnosis- teachers can use assessment to make
the teaching and teaming responsive to students‘
needs.
▪ Feedback- teachers can gain feedback on
students‘ teaming. detect misunderstandings,
assess the effectiveness of their teaching and
make appropriate modifications and adaptations. 6

Purpose of assessment

  • 2. Purpose of assesment ▪ The role of assessment is to enhance teaching and improve student learning. Assessment must be planned with its purpose in mind. ▪ Assessment for as and of learning all have a role to play in supporting and improving student learning. ▪ The most important part of assessment is the interpretation and use of the information that is gleaned for its intended purpose. 2
  • 3. “ ▪ Assessment is embedded in the learning process. It is tightly inter connected with curriculum and instruction. ▪ As teachers and students work towards the achievement of curriculum outcomes, assessment plays an important role in informing instruction guiding the students next steps and checking progress and achievement. ▪ Teachers use many different processes and strategies for classroom assessment and adapt them to suit the assessment purpose and needs of individual students. 3
  • 4. Different Functions of Assessment- for Students ▪ Diagnostic -to enable students to find out their level of knowledge / understanding at the beginning of a course. ▪ Feedback- for students to determine their progress in relation to the learning outcomes of a course. 4
  • 5. Learning Opportunities - to provide students with the opportunities to develop their mastery of ideas practice skills and competencies. Self Evaluation- to encourage students to make judgments about the quality of their own work. Motivation- assessment tasks can enhance student motivation by providing frameworks for developing, reviewing or extending their understanding. 5
  • 6. For teachers ▪ Diagnosis- teachers can use assessment to make the teaching and teaming responsive to students‘ needs. ▪ Feedback- teachers can gain feedback on students‘ teaming. detect misunderstandings, assess the effectiveness of their teaching and make appropriate modifications and adaptations. 6
  • 7. Teaching and Learning - teachers can use assessment tasks as teaching and learning tools both through the nature of the tasks themselves and through formative feedback. 7
  • 8. 8 Promoting self- evaluation teachers can give feedback which encourage students to make judgments' about the quality of their work
  • 9. ▪ Generating marks or grades to make decisions. ▪ To pass or fail ▪ To select for entry ▪ To select for future courses and programmes ▪ To demonstrate institutional standards ▪ To give the information for educational research ▪ To get the necessary help from the government of society.
