The story To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee takes place in a fictional town of Maycomb,
Alabama, this is based on Lee s hometown of Monroeville, Alabama. In the story Calpurnia is the
maid for the Finch family, because in the 1930 s it was still common for negroes to work as house
servants for low pay and little respect. Calpurnia is the only present female figure in the Finch
household, which in a sense makes her the mother to Scout and Jem. Atticus and Calpurnia are both
parents to the children, but Calpurnia is more of a stickler especially since she has already had
children of her own. Cal embraces her second motherhood to do the best possible job at hoping she
can make a difference in their lives which was not present with her biological children. In the story
Scout and Calpurnia share many parallels with a mother and daughter. For instance, She was always
ordering me out of the kitchen, asking me why I couldn t behave as well as Jem when she knew he

Tom Ripley is a talented imitator, it seems the only person Tom cannot quite comprehend is himself.
Ripley isolates himself from people by being non isolated, he finds himself in very social situations,
yet he does not quite understand how one should be in social interactions. However people find
themselves attracted to him because he is so great at acting and reading people and learning how to
manipulate them into believing that he is not actually socially alienated, he somehow becomes the life
of the party. Tom Ripley was such a fantastic impostor he would sometimes find himself lost in one of
his characters that he was putting on. In the film it starts with him playing the piano at a wedding
filling in for a young man that went to Princeton, after meeting Mr. Greenleaf he kept up the same
character from Princeton. Tom had been very friendly last summer with a Princeton junior who had
talked of nothing but Princeton, so that Tom had finally pumped him for more and more, foreseeing a
time when he might be able to use the information (Highsmith, 21). Ripley was always remembering
information from different people he met assuming that if need be he could pull out that information
in sticky situations. One thing about Tom Ripley was that he found himself in sticky situations more
often then some, this left him feeling paranoid that people were after him at all times. This is no way
to live life, especially when the way you want to live your life is behind the curtains.

New York City Draft Riots
On July 13, 1863, the streets of New York City were ablaze. People ran rampant without a care of the
well being of anyone else; mutilating bodies, robbing people, and setting buildings on fire. Children
were rushed to safety from the bloodthirsty mobs. These were the New York City Draft Riots of 1863,
and colored and rich people weren t safe from the protests that the poor and working class had against
the highly controversial draft (Bernstein 34). These violent riots had to be stopped, and someone had
to come up with an idea to put the crowds at rest. The New York City Draft Riots of 1863 were
stopped when the Union government decided to compromise by stopping the draft and not receiving
more troops for the civil war.
The Draft Riots began on July 13 of 1863 and lasted for five days (Amato and Meisel). The civil war
was taking place and the Battle of Gettysburg was ending. Hopes for a Union victory were
skyrocketing like never before and the brave soldiers were heading home. Slavery also seemed to only
be a temporary thing, with so many African Americans arriving free into the north (Lighthizer). Many
things had gone wrong in the past, including battles and race issues. The future seemed so bright for
nearly everyone in New York City, and something seemed so clear; things were finally getting better
for so many people. Unfortunately for the happy people, it wouldn t remain that way for long.

start to change till 100 years later in 1964, as the Vietnam War was only a few more years from being

Analysis Of Jane Hirshfield s Poem Tree
Jane Hirshfield connects to nature at her home in Marin County, California this is where she gets her
inspiration for her poems. Hirshfield published Tree in 2000 as a free verse poem, divided into 4
stanzas and 4 sentences to convey the nature world. The poem represents a young redwood (line 2)
growing near a house, near a kitchen window. The redwood is already scraping against the window
frame of the house, reminding the reader of the foolish (line 1) idea of letting it grow there. Humans
were created to be one with nature, but as they evolved as a species, they were obligated to choose
between the materialistic world or the world of nature. Hirshfield writes this poem in second person to
give life to the poem so that the poem speaks to the reader. The poem starts by accusing the reader of
letting the redwood grow near the house. It is foolish (line 1) lets the reader know that nature should
not be growing this close to your home. Hirshfield takes the liberty to talk straight to the reader
through the speaker in telling them that it is nonsense to let nature be so close to a material object such
as a house. The reader can visually see a young redwood// grow next to a house (line 2, 3). The tree

Universities can best be viewed as corporations. Corporations are simply businesses. The only reason
for a business to exist is to make a profit. In order to make a profit, universities sell a variety of
degrees to students. Students desire a degree because they want the credentials that will help them get
