A pronoun is a word that is used in
place of a noun or another pronoun.

Suzanne saw Marty at the party.
The noun or group of words that a pronoun refers to
(or takes the place of) is called its antecedent.
• A pronoun refers to a person, place, thing or idea.
• When you use a pronoun, you should be sure that it
refers to its antecedent clearly.
• Pronouns must agree with their antecedents in
number (singular or plural) and gender.
EXAMPLE: Megan is an amazing singer. She is very talented!
Pronoun = __she _____ Antecedent = ___Megan_____
EXAMPLE: Jameson asked the teacher for his make-up work.
Pronoun = ___his______ Antecedent = ___Jameson____
-A subject pronoun is used as the
subject of the sentence.
SINGULAR PLURAL

he, she, it They
-When you have a compound subject, read the sentence
with each individual subject to figure out which pronoun
to use.
 Chris and ( he or him) ate ice cream for dinner.
 He ate ice cream for dinner. or
 Him ate ice cream for dinner.
-An object pronoun comes after an
action verb or a preposition (to, in for, at).
SINGULAR PLURAL

him, her, it them
 Give the book to me.
 The teacher gave her a reprimand.
 I will tell you a story.
 Susan will read it to them.
-A possessive pronoun is used to
show ownership or relationship.
SINGULAR PLURAL

her, hers, his, its their, theirs
 My teacher works five days each week.
 The book is his.
 Did you see its cover was torn?
 The teacher chose our group to go first.
-A reflexive pronoun refers back to the subject of the sentence.
-An intensive pronoun adds emphasis to a noun already named.
-Intensive pronouns usually appear near the subject of the
sentence and end in “self” or “ selves.”
SINGULAR PLURAL

yourself yourselves
herself, himself, itself themselves
 I myself am sick of all this rain. (Intensive)
 The president himself appeared at our school.
(Intensive)
 She made herself a cup of coffee. (Reflexive)
 You can walk to school by yourself. (Reflexive)
