Pronouns and Modals (Obligation and Ability)

  • 4. We use subject pronouns as the subject of a verb • I like comedies • He wants to go to the cinema
  • 5. We use object pronouns as the object of a verb • The film made me cry • She ate them all.
  • 6. We use possessive pronouns to show possession • These are my sweets. • Those sweets are yours.
  • 8. We use ´s and s´to show possession.
  • 9. We use ´s for one person and s´for more than one person
  • 10. • She ate her friend´s popcorn • (just one friend) • She ate her friends´popcorn • (more than one friend)
  • 11. BE CAREFUL! • But we use ´s with children • Where are the children´s tickets?

  • 19. Notice the difference between don´t have to / needn´t / mustn´t ■ You don´t have to/ needn´t leave now – (there is no obligation now) ■ You mustn´t leave now – (it is not allowed)
