REPORTED SPEECH
STATEMENTS

DIRECT SPEECH  we repeat the exact words that someaone said.
We usually use the verb say and the words of the speaker are put in
quotation marks.
Irma said Tina is on a plane”

REPORTED SPEECH  we report the meaning of what someone said,
without using the exact words. We use a reporting verb, usually say
or tell followed by (that) and the reported elements
Irma said that Tina was on a plane

IMPORTANT
 We use say when there is no indirect object
 “I will be there” He said  He said that he would be there
 We use tell when there is an indirect object
 “I will call you, Mark” He said  She told Mark that she would call him

When we change a sentence from Direct speech to Reported speech,
pronouns and possesive adjectives change according to the meaning of
the sentence.
“You look great in your new dress” said David
David said that I looked great in my new dress

year

NEXT WEEK / MONTH  THE FOLLOWING WEEK / MONTH
Bob said “ I will finish the report next week”
Bob said she would finish the report the
following week

IMPORTANT
The Past Perfect and the verbs could, might, should, would
and used to do not in change in Reported Speech
The Past Progressive usually doesn´t change in Reported
Speech
