Essay On Goal Setting
At my intern site, individual goal setting for the client s is a little tricky at times only because we don t
offer individualized treatment plans for the clients that attend each week. At Youth Outlook, member
attendance is optional each week, and we don t always see the same teenagers every week at each of
the drop in sites. Therefore, it becomes a little more difficult when trying to set goals for some of the
clients at the agency. At the agency when a staff member encounters an individual who requires an
intervention due to a problem, they are experiencing. The staff will do their best to identify what the
client needs to address the issue. Often the staff members will process the problem with the client and

At each site, the client s often come up with a shared goal that everyone would like to work on.
Recently, at one of the groups, I talked about establishing healthy boundaries with the clients. As a
group, all of the clients decided to incorporate weekly guidelines for setting appropriate limits with
one another during their time together. I thought this was an excellent example of the clients coming
together to support one another while attending weekly sessions. Another recent example of shared
goals for the group was setting up a Halloween party at the drop at some of the drop in sites. Each
location required some individuals of the group to participate in tasks for the Halloween Parties. Each
person of the group must complete a task such as brining, food, drinks, party favors, or board games.
The ultimate goal for the teenagers was to plan and implement a party for the whole group to enjoy!
At my agency, I have begun working on my goals outlined by my learning agreement. One of my
goals is to develop programming for the adolescents at each location that I attend every week. The
programming that the agency has provided in the past has included educational topics, health
education, along with other related issues that pertain to the gay, lesbian and transgender community.
However, one of my goals is to increase programming topics so that the adolescents have more of a
variety different groups each

Theories Of Corrections And Specific Deterrence
Corrections or Penal system is the term given in America to describe the governmental entity that is
responsible for punishment and surveillance of convicted criminals. The scope of corrections is one
that covers many areas in the criminal justice system, such as incarceration, parole and probation. The
common belief or ideal is that the purpose of the correctional system is to deter criminal behavior and
also punish criminal behavior. These ideas of deterrence can be broken down into two theories,
general deterrence and specific deterrence these two theories are what most penologist study to
understand how to stop criminal behavior. Many who believe in general deterrence states that the
American correctional system is not tough enough on crime, therefore that s why we have high rate of
criminal behavior. Those who align with the theory of general deterrence, believe in applying the
death penalty, mandatory sentencing and other forms of severe punishment to criminals to ... Show

Specific deterrence is designed only to deter the individual offender from committing the exact
criminal behavior in the future. Advocates for specific deterrence also believe that punishing offenders
severely will make them unwilling to offend in the future while also rehabilitating the criminal back
into society. A criminal who has committed, statutory rape, for example, would be deterred from his or
her criminal activity again due to the unpleasant experience in the correction system, the criminal is
arrested, has to pay restitution to the victims and has to register in the national database of sex
offenders. These heavy regulations help deter the criminal behavior, but it does not deter society from
the criminal act. The specific deterrence main objective is to apply enough punishment to offset
pleasure or profit derived from the criminal

Analyzing The Beginning Of Science
In the beginning, ...what was in the beginning? Science is only starting to scratch the surface of our
origins, but all these findings are rather recent. Humans didn t always have carbon dating and
archaeology to find answers about their past, so they had to draw their own conclusions based off of
their own lifestyles. So back to the earlier question, what was in the beginning? According to the
Mayans Popol Vuh, there was nothing. Then the existing deities, Heart of Sky and the Plumed
Serpent, joined together to give themselves the power to form the Earth from the water with their
words. Heart of Sky met with the Plumed Serpent, and together they agreed on the creation of man,
who would maintain the Earth and worship them. So they created animals, and made them the
guardians of the forest. However, when the creators ordered the animals to speak, they could only
screech and howl. Frustrated, the gods allowed them to remain guardians of the forest, but decreed
that they should be eaten. After this attempt, four sub deities, the Modeler, the Maker, the Begetter,
and the Bearer, attempt to make humanity out of clay. However, this creation, while being humanoid,
cannot sustain itself and crumbles and falls apart. Next, the wooden humans, the manikins are created,
but they know no gods, and are ugly, and lead their lives without care for their environment. The
manikins are eventually killed by the animals and cookery. Finally, the gods pull themselves together,

A Walk In The Woods Rhetorical Devices
A Walk in the Woods Chapters 5 9 Page 102 103 Even in ideal circumstances...his expression bug
eyed and fearful. After finishing the first nine chapters of A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson,
detailing the first hand experience of hiking through the Appalachian Trail, a certain passage displays
many of the rhetorical strategies Bryson uses to develop his story and tone. In this particular passage,
Bryson details the extreme distances he traveled on the trail with his companion, Stephen Katz, and
the dangers they encountered due to the severe weather as they preceded with painstaking
deliberativeness . Through Bryson s use of simile, imagery, and onomatopoeia he creates a
disheartening and ambivalent tone that reflects the struggles and endurance he underwent on the trail
while captivating his audience. Bryson develops his tone and story by forming a simile to describe

simile establishes an illustrative image in the reader s mind and creates a lasting impression of the
situation. This improves the author s tone as it details the uncertainty and discouragement the men
were facing during the hike. Furthermore, Bryson advances his narrative and tone with imagery as he
adapts to the trail when it becomes hazardous with oncoming snow and freezing temperatures. Bryson
describes his surroundings with a bleak and dreary attitude, for example, he states that the path was
broken by steep, thickly bouldered streams, frozen solid and ribbed with blue

Saddam Hussein Justified
One of the greatest debates over the past decade has been whether the US s effort to overthrow a
tyrannical leader named Saddam Hussein was truly justified. The aim of this paper is to shed light on
what the relations were between the United States and Iraq for over half a century and what factors led
to such a disastrous invasion which left over half a million people dead and countless more injured.
What justifications did politicians such as Vice President Dick Cheney and President George W. Bush
give to the American public which convinced the masses that an invasion was necessary after
disastrous examples in the past such as the invasion of Vietnam? It is important that one looks over
specific turning points in history, such as the attack ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As President George W. Bush made clear in his State of the Union on January 29, 2002, that in
meeting this challenge, the US would not differentiate between terrorist groups and nations which
harbor or arm them ( World Socialist ). Iraq did not specifically harbor al Qaeda, but it had provided
training camps and other support to terrorist groups fighting the government of Turkey and Iran, as
well as hard line Palestinian groups. In fact, the question of Iraq s link to terrorism grew more urgent
with Saddam s suspected determination to develop weapons of mass destruction (WMD), which Bush
administration officials feared he might share with terrorists who could launch devastating attacks
against the United States (Al Oraibi). Furthermore, the vice president at the time, Dick Cheney also
played a significant role in convincing the masses that an occupation was necessary. The venues for
Cheney s speeches were the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Nashville,
Tennessee and in San Antonio, Texas. Aside from assuring a receptive audience, the choice of veterans
groups reflects the administration s strategy of first

Franklin D. Roosevelt
In the 1930 s the United States need a president that would be able to lead the country through the
tough times of the Great Depression and World War II. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the man who was
capable to lead the country through these challenging times. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the
adored only child of James and Sara Delano Roosevelt born on January 30, 1882 at Hyde Park, New
York. Both sides of the family, the Delano and the Roosevelt had business associates of shipping
interests in coal and railroads. They both had long English Dutch patrician pedigrees (Franklin D.

Franklin came down with polio while at Campobello for summer vacation. Poliomyelitis (polio) is
disease that affects the muscle and the nerves and can lead to partial or full paralysis. Symptoms of
polio include fever, muscle spasms, and muscle pain. The treatment is heat pads to reduce pain,
therapy and pain killers. Franklin was paralyzed from the chest down at first than the disease relaxed
and only paralyzed him from the hips down. No one knew how polio was contracted. It may have
been because of the exhausting weeks with the Navy Administration or from the chill he received after
falling in to a cold bay while fishing. It also may have been the combo of tiredness and the chill
(Tugwell 56). Doctors were called for a diagnosis and each time they gave a wrong diagnosis. It wasn
t until two weeks after contracting the disease that a specialist gave a correct diagnosis and it was two
weeks after the specialist came that Franklin was transported to New York for therapy (57). He was so
determined to overcome his disability that he devoted seven years of his life to grueling physical
therapy (Goodwind 109). But unfortunately he would never walk again without the help of steel
braces on his legs and a strong arm to lean on.
As Franklin was recovering Eleanor really became important to Franklin as his representative. She
made appearances to keep his name in public so that the people and the political party

Summary Of Blink By Malcolm Gladwell Blink
In Chapter 2 of Blink by Malcolm Gladwell, Gladwell insist that what we think of as freewill is
largely an illusion: much of the time, we are simply operating on automatic pilot, and the way we
think and act and how we think and act on the spur of the moment are a lot more susceptible to outside
influences than we realize. (58). Gladwell is referring to priming, as human beings, our behavior and
decision making are often influenced by subtle triggers we are either aware of or not aware of. As
humans we are vulnerable to the most subtle stimuli. Gladwell provides examples of priming with
different types of exams and games administered to college students. An area where priming occurs on
a daily occurrence is at the grocery store because the products sold are strategically placed on the
shelves to target a specific audience company s want to sell their product to, the price tag are designed
with colors that we associates subconsciously with spending, and there are signs located all around the
store that tell you that you ll be saving money so that you buy more of that certain product or so you
are more likely to shop at that particular store. Priming is when subtle triggers we are either aware of
or not aware of influence our behavior. Gladwell has the reader imagine that he is a professor
proctoring a scrambled sentence test where students were asked to walk down a long hallway into an
exam room where they were given an exam with a list of five word sets and asked to change each
word set into a grammatically four word sentence as fast as possible. The test was not difficult but the
college students walked down the hallway more slowly than they walked towards the classroom. This
is because ingrained in the list were certain words that were associated with being old. This test, which
was developed by a clever psychologist named John Bargh, makes our adaptive unconsciousness
ponder about the state of being old. Further research suggests that individuals can be primed to behave
differently, various words may be used to influence people to be polite or rude. Malcolm Gladwell
demonstrates how a simple scramble sentence test challenges your sub consciousness into believing
that you are much older by simply

Perspective Essay on the Code of the Streets
Perspective Essay on The Code of the Streets
Culture in urban communities, also referred to as inner cities, are growing increasingly violent. In the
article, The Code of the Streets by Elijah Anderson, he begins to take an in depth look at the root of
the evil. He deduces that economic factors, parenting and the troublesome environments largely
influence the violent norms within this culture.
Anderson notes that two groups coexist simultaneously in the inner cities which he labels as the
decent and the streets. Although both groups suffer economic difficulties, they differ in values mainly
instilled through parenting and the home environment. The decent group seeks to adopt mainstream
middle class values, such as a love, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Robberies, violence and drug dealing transgressions are a constant fear of many. The decent families
although opposed to the norms of the ghetto, encourage their children to understand and respect the
code of the streets in an effort to protect themselves. Also, many youths in the inner cities try to
behave as others within their sub culture. A child might dress or speak a certain way that a race is
labeled to be standard to fit in. For example, a Caucasian individual may dress in baggy clothes and
speak in slang in public to imitate what people label the African American youth to be uniform.
However, this individual in some instances could act completely different at home or in other
environments such as family gatherings or church. Anderson begins to analyze the troubled culture by
first looking at the home environment and behaviors during childhood. The values differ drastically
between the two groups. He states that the decent families are typically working families and try to
instill positive values in their children. They hope to provide a nurturing environment and aid their
children in pursuing a successful future. They are involved in their performance in school and have
home rules to abide by. They have curfews for their children and generally know where and whom
they are with at all times, especially young children. They try to prepare their children for the
unknown and possible confrontations with

Digital Marketing Essay
You Will Always Cut It With Any Of These Digital Marketing Techniques
Digital marketing keeps growing more and more everyday. Right now, digital marketing is a big
umbrella of several marketing techniques. This is why it is now much more expensive to hire a digital
marketing service provider.
Every mobile app development company includes digital marketing tools in their app. A good example
is the single push button with which you can send posts to all the users of your app. The common
digital marketing techniques have been outlined right below.
1. Social media marketing
People are now generally obsessed with social media like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter... etc. So,
digital marketers take advantage by creating social media account to ... Show more content on

The suggestion will hold water as other participants will take it as a non biased opinion.
3. Email marketing
Digital advertisers send marketing emails to people that have subscribed for their newsletters.
However, before each mail is sent, there will be some profiling. The people who may need the product
are then filtered out. For instance, if the product is ladies shoes, it will be sent to only ladies. And guys
will be left out.
Email marketing has a lot of advantages. It is sent directly to only the intended recipients. It is also
about the most cost effective marketing techniques. Besides, you can be able to track who received the
mail and who didn t.
4. Google adwords
Google AdWords are keywords people are expected to type into Google search engine when looking
for certain products or services. As a company, you are supposed to link these keywords to relevant
landing pages on your website. This means that when you adopt keywords like Buy a cheap raincoat ,
you are supposed to link it to the exact landing page on your website that has all the raincoats you
offer and the price of each of them. It is wrong to link it to your home page as it will waste the
prospective buyer s time and also earn you low quality score.
For Google to display your site on its search engine result page (SERP), you have to submit it to
Google. However, Google has its own set of procedures for displaying results. On its own, Google has
to find, crawl and analyze

Killer Whales In Zoos
The Blackfish Phase has come into play in today s Zoos and aquariums. Sounds pretty inexplicable
right? If truth be told, it s not very convoluted whatsoever. It associates with the king or regal of all
black fish known as the killer whale. The killer whale is undergoing a phase of being isolated from
today s prominent zoos such as SeaWorld, but that s not the only dilemma that has ensued. Excuding
killer whales in zoos ,doing to their behavior, has prompted other zoos to supervene this situation and
are considering abstracting not just killer whales, but any animal that appears to create only
insufficient danger to the tourist at their zoos and also the animal trainers there as well. The deal is that
people have acknowledged this happening in many different forms. Some believe that all zoos should

The Meaning Of Arnold Friend And The Devil
The devil has long been associated with evil, and containing a negative connotation. Connie
continuously acts promiscuously, resulting in the devil appearing at her house. Connie, however, when
first meeting Arnold is unphased by the potential harm and acts in a flirtatious manner to grab his
attention. In the story Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? by Joyce Carol Oates, she uses
symbolism to to represent that Arnold Friend is the devil.
Connie, while walking with Eddie, notices a man off to the side. Despite Connie being with Eddie, she
catches the attention of a man, unaware of the harm he will soon cause her. The following day he
shows up to her house and says I wanna introduce myself, I m Arnold Friend. The fact that this man s
name is Arnold Friend is extremely significant, as it is a reference to the fact that he is the devil. The
name Arnold Friend with the R taken out spells an old fiend. The meaning of fiend goes back to old
english with the word freond meaning enemy or foe. Therefore, the word fiend also means an enemy
or foe. Therefore, it can be concluded that Arnolds name means an enemy. This foreshadows the fact
that he will soon cause harm to Connie and become the enemy. To many the devil has long been
associated with harm, and is seen as the enemy. The connotation associated with the devil is generally
negative. When speaking of the devil, Christians are opposed as they believe the devil is their true
enemy. The fact that the devil is an enemy

The New Land Of America Essay
In the year 1619, the new land of America had been settled and populated. There was a problem
though; there was much work to do and not enough people to fill those positions. According to the
professor of history at South Carolina State University, Doctor Stanley Harrold, The Atlantic slave
trade began in Africa in the mid 1400s and lasted into the 19th century. Initially, Portuguese traders
purchased small numbers of slaves from kingdoms on the western coast of Africa and transported
them for sale in Portugal and Spain. The Atlantic slave trade did not become a huge enterprise until
after European nations began colonizing the Americas during the 1500s. During the 1600s the Dutch
pushed the Portuguese out of the trade and then contested the British and French for control of it. By
1713 Britain had emerged as the dominant slave trading nation. In all, the trade brought more than 10
million Africans to America... (Harrold). The slave trade started with only 20 slaves being brought to
Virginia but the trade started to boom when the realization that slavers were cheaper than indentured
servants and more abundant. The treatment of the African American slaves was deplorable. They were
not treated as human beings but as disposable property. This gave rise to the Abolitionist Movement.
The Movement did not gain any traction until The American Revolution (1775 1783) and the French
Revolution (1789 1799), widely seen as revolutions by citizens against oppressive

The Importance Of The Executive Branch In The United States
The government of the United States of America has been around for over 2 centuries, in this time the
original setup has been little altered. The government is composed of three individual branches:
judicial, executive, and legislative branches. All three branches are held together using a system of
checks and balances. While each branch has some kind of trump or has control over another branch,
some branches are arguably more powerful than others. The main focus of this paper will be on where

What Are The Rewards of Becoming A Landlord? Owning rental property offers many financial and
lifestyle benefits. The number one reward and benefit of being a landlord and having rental property is

Most first time landlords still have full time jobs and may find it difficult to handle both. Even though
being a landlord does not have to be a full time job, depending on your resources, it will take more
than a few hours a week to do the job. Most landlords need to be reachable and available 24 hours a
day, to attend to or answer some form of emergent problem or non emergent problem from their
tenants (i.e. a pipe burst, the lights went out or a loud and unruly neighbor/tenant).
This brings you, the potential land, to the problems with tenants. Problem tenants can be one of the
unfortunate problems and facts of owning rental property. There will always be a possibility that a
landlord will get the tenant from Hell , someone who either doesn t pay the rent or doesn t pay rent on
time, who destroys the property or who call and bugs the landlord continuously for just about
anything. A proper background check or screening process will help eliminate some problematic
tenants. However, a properly executed lease or rental agreement will probably help deal with most
annoying tenants.
There may be times when the landlord experiences problems with leasing their apartments, such as in
a recession, a soft market or a modest/bad economy which can and does not exclude the best of real
estate investors/landlords. However, realistically, vacancies for a landlord will are a reality no matter

which exalt the principle of cultural patriotism. This is done in such a way that further intentions can

such an entity does not lose any of the elements that make us human, but it is nevertheless different. If
we wish to maintain consistent in emphasizing thoughts and emotions, such a being would still be
human. This scenario will necessitate an expansion in what most people think of when they think of
humanity. Moreover, such an intelligence could then began to improve itself, becoming better and
better at doing so, resulting in a superintelligence (Bostrom). This could propel us into what Bostrom
calls the posthuman era, a society that meets one of a few conditions, including a [p]opulation greater
than 1 trillion persons [or a] life expectancy greater than 500 years (Bostrom). These scenarios may
not be as far fetched as they seem; if any one of them happens, it will be difficult to keep on
describing humans in the context of anything but our shared history. On a similar note, one can look to
Eliezer Yudkowsky, an artificial intelligence researcher and one of a growing number of
transhumanists. He defines the philosophy of transhumanism as the logical extension of humanism: it
does not make sense to value life up to a

The Baroque And Classical Periods
The Baroque and Classical periods are where we see the emergence of renowned composers like
Handel, Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart and Beethoven. The music from these famous composers are some of
the world s most recognizable and beautiful classics of all time. Music of these eras are still being
used in many of today s movies and commercials. Musical characteristics developed from these eras
are still used and heard presently in popular music.
The art of the Baroque period was very colorful and dramatic, which translated into the music created
at the time. The idea of being very expressive and embellishing in detail would lead to the
development of opera. Opera is a dramatic play that is acted out through music. In opera, a soloist
must be able to act and sing out the mood of the text or libretto. This expressive singing accompanied
by a bass line or basso continuo is called monody. This idea of a new texture would feature the
distinction between the high voice that carries one melody and the low voice or bass. The
accompanying bass line was played by harpsichord with the addition of a bassoon or cello (Wright 6
3a,6 3b).
Claudio Monteverdi, who is considered an originator of opera who composed the earliest example of
the genre called Orfeo. Based on ancient Greek mythology, which was the initial intention of opera,
Orfeo is a drama about the mythical Greek god Orpheus. To rescue his bride Euridice, he goes down
to Hades. In the prologue of Orfeo which is Del mio Permesso amato , the Greek muse La Música sets
the stage for the drama. At first hearing La Música sing, her melodic voice captures my ears and
attention, like letting me know to listen up . As was Monteverdi s intention, I can hear how the
harmony is the same while the melody changes throughout. The melismatic singing that accentuates
certain words emphasize the importance of setting the mood of the opera (Wright, 6 3c).
A great interest in hearing only instrumental music tell the story without text arise. The development
of the concerto grosso which is a small unit of soloists against a full orchestra (Wright, 7 4) brought
about one of the most popular and recognized concerto pieces, Vivaldi s Violin Concerto in E Major
(the Spring). As one of

Saint Augustine Of Hippo Once Stated
Saint Augustine of Hippo once stated, The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one
page. It was after stumbling across this statement that I was influenced to call up my friend and
suggest a road trip.
When we started off, it was a beautiful day. The bright morning sun peeked over the Appalachian
mountains to bid us farewell as we packed our belongings into the 2011 Chevy Cruze. Dew still
perched on the delicate leaves of various summer flowers while we rode down the road towards
Tennessee.
My friend Sarah drove. Her fingers tapped the steering wheel in rhythm to the Carrie Underwood song
blaring from the radio. It was the radio s job to keep us awake since we had left so early in the
morning; however, it was not doing a good job as I fell asleep only twenty minutes into the ride. Sarah
had to wake me up at the rest stop just outside of Roanoke, Virginia.
Hey, Allyson, she called as she shook my shoulders, it would be nice if you woke up, so I could take a
nap.
I just mumbled an incoherent string of words in response.
I can just drive right back to Pennsylvania. We don t have to take a road trip.
That got me up. I had so much invested into this trip like money and time.
I sat in the driver s seat and watched the road continuously channel under the car sort of like a
conveyor belt. It was hypnotizing, just keeping my eye on the road. Before either Sarah or I knew it,
we were already parked in front of our hotel in Gatlinburg,

Theme Of Women In A Doll s House
How the Need for Independence Contributed to the Failure of Marriage in Ibsen s A Doll s House
The play, A Doll s House, was written by Henrik Ibsen in the year 1879. In this time period, men and
women were not equal. The main protagonist, Nora, had decisions decided for her throughout her life.
At a certain point, she realized it was time for her to seek independence. This search for self
sufficiency caused many issues in her marriage.
From early on in the play, it is apparent how submissive Nora is to her husband, Torvald: You haven t
any idea how many expenses we skylarks and squirrels have, Torvald (14). He uses pet names such as
squirrel and spendthrift to address Nora, comparing her to feeble animals. These are metaphors that
Ibsen uses to display how most women were treated in this time period. They were seen as objects or
fragile little animals that needed the protection of a man. Nora goes along with these names and even
refers to herself as them in order to please him and get what she wants, which is usually money.
Torvald is controlling and possessive when it comes to Nora, but she doesn t know any better because
her dad treated her in a similar manner. She s the mother of three kids and a woman, so work is not a
realistic option for her. This is another reason why she s so dependent on Torvald for money.
Although Nora was a naive seeming young woman, she did yearn to feel independent as well. When
speaking with her friend Mrs. Linde she often boasted about

Quebec Should Not Separate from Canada
Quebec should not separate from Canada
Quebec was founded by French settlers during the 16th century. It was then conquered by the British
(known as the conquest of New France in 1760). The Philosophy of the Enlightment allowed Britain s
victory to treat the French people with dignity as both nations were civilized societies (source?). The
British allowed the French occupants to maintain cultural aspects such as language and traditions
(source?). In effect, The Quebec Act was published in 1974, in efforts to ensure loyalty from the
French as the British government worried that the remaining French people would support the
American Independent War (source?). The act was favourable for French people; allowing the

Trade barriers and agreements prevent free flow of goods and services. Quebec s main industries of
textiles, furniture and dairy farms are reliant on the rest of Canada, would be adversely affected. For
example, dairy products from Quebec, which provide half of the industrial milk for the rest country,
would be subjected to higher prices and would decrease its demand. Quebec would lose a stable
supply of oil and gasoline from Canada (source). Resources of this nature in any industry would be a
sensitive matter and problematic as people would be subjected to higher energy costs.
International trade agreements would spread to both Canada and Quebec in negotiations with foreign
countries. The negotiation processes are time consuming with high expenses and exhausting efforts.
For example, to negotiate a free trade agreement with the United States, it took more than two years
with over a hundred of employees (source?). The aggregate costs of the negotiations were estimated to
be 30 million dollars (source?). Quebec does not only need to renegotiate with the United States; it
would then have to negotiate with an additional 170 countries. Due to the high intervention of Quebec
government in the economy, it is unlikely Quebec would attain sustainable free trade agreements with
other countries. Given the weaker external position of Quebec in foreign affairs, it is not easy for the
province to bargain higher benefits individually in international

Irony In The Screwtape Letters By C. S. Lewis
The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis is a book made up of 31 letters of teaching, communication, and
familial advice communicated with the only two physical tempters in the book, Screwtape, the mentor,
and his young eager to learn nephew or mentee, Wormworth. Screwtape uses the letters to aid him in
influencing his nephew to do as he does in actions, thoughts, and in his work and convinces him to
follow the way of Satan, their Father and to follow in both Screwtape and the Devil s path.
Wormworth s patient is a young male who has newly tried to connect with the Enemy , God.
Screwtape uses very common flaws, some of which are, materialism, physical attraction, and gluttony
to try to draw him away from God, and brainwash him into believing all of his thoughts and detesting
all outside sources as much as he can.
The letters utilize reoccurring literary devices utilized throughout the letters, two of the most prevalent
are satire and irony. The Screwtape Letters are infused with Irony, through statements that the readers
see and comprehend as see as what is most commonly perceived in human culture. Especially when
the two refer to the person whom Wormworth is trying to assimilate to his ways, as his patient when
conventionally people think of a patient as someone you are trying to help not hinder, in this case, as
well as Screwtape referring to God as deceitful and disloyal while he and Wormworth are not even
loyal to one another, and followed the teachings of Satan, the leader of deceit. He uses satire
throughout the entire format of the 31 letters. experienced devil is helping the younger one become
better at what they do.
The Nineteenth letter opens many doors in learning the true characteristics of Screwtape. Up until this
point he has written his letters in a stern, friendly, and affectionate mentoring tone trying to influence
his protégé Wormwood to do to his patient as Screwtape has done to his in the past. But now in the
nineteenth letter the readers are now enlightened to how synthetic his exchanges have been thus far.
This chapter reveals the true malicious nature of both Screwtape and Wormwood, neither of them have
any sense of loyalty to one another. Screwtape is especially vengeful not

Comparison Of First And Second Language Acquisition
Comparison of First and Second Language Acquisition This paper gives a comprehensive comparison
of how acquiring a first language differs from acquiring a new or a second language. It provides the
similarities and differences of the two analogies and gives a critical appraisal of the strengths and
weaknesses of these two issues. Finally, the paper provides personal suggestions and insights for
future research on the same topics. Moreover, the paper will detail the differences between first
language acquisition in the pre school period of learning and second language acquisition at an
advanced or higher classroom level. Acquisition of a second language is one of the most remarkable
aspects of the development of human knowledge and way of communication. It is an unusual
phenomenon that has caught the attention of many researchers especially in the field of learning and
linguistics for generations to come. The first language acquisition and the acquisition of a second
language have been treated in most cases as two distinct analogies thus forming contrivances because
of their differences regarding environment and age. Brown (2000), while differentiating between
attainment of first language and the acquirement of a second or new language contends that the first
emanates from unconscious, and naturalistic use of language and in many instances lead to a person
becoming fluent in conversation, while the second language acquisition symbolizes the cognizant

The Abortion Of The United States
Facing Abortion in the United States
Abortion is a common debated topic in the United States. It is becoming commonplace in our society.
Terminating an unwanted pregnancy is a difficult choice that many women have faced throughout the
years. Through out this paper, reasons for abortion, women, underage girls, parental laws, emotions,
and the procedures of terminating a pregnancy will be discussed. While there is still more research
being done, it is said that abortion can have both negative and positive effects.
There are many reasons for why women seek abortions. The purposes for seeking an abortion have
been categorized into 11 wide ranging themes. The main themes acknowledged as intentions for
seeking an abortion included financial reasons (40%), timing (36%), marital reasons (31%), and the
need to focus on other children (29%); (Biggs, Gould, Foster 2013). Women seek abortion for reasons
that are related to their surroundings, including their economic status, age, healthiness, and marital
status (Biggs et al., 2013). For women who have an abortion, their circumstances can sometimes
change for the better by not having a baby. Women who feel that they can better themselves without a
child in the picture are motivated to have an abortion so they can reach their goals. There is a fear of
undergoing humiliation, or internalized shame due to the choice of having an abortion; driving women
to provide a response that society would understand for her decision to

purpose and chose to live in seclusion for thousands of years. Diana disagreed with the Amazon s
decision to separate from mankind and believed that the Amazons should integrate back into man s
society, but Hippolyta believed that the Amazons have no place in man s society. However, all that

Human Rights in History
Not only has it taken several years for human rights to be a legitimate international concern
throughout the world, it is yet to be settled. They are still under development and require a range of
actions before human rights are fully enforced. But what are human rights? Human rights could be
defined in various number of statements. It could be people gifted with a set of rights and protections
because they are human. Or simply, a right which belongs to every individual. With a number of major
treaties governing the issue of human rights you would think that these rights would be already
established, sadly there is still much more to be done before there is a universal set of human rights,
governing and ensuring the equal treatment of every individual. After addressing numerous issues and
injustices, and the events of the Second World War and the Holocaust, we begin to see a movement.
This point created a permanent place for human rights on international agendas. and the human rights
regime had began to push forward. Despite this movement forward there are still a vast range of
barriers creating a hurdle for the achievement of universal human rights. These barriers can be broken
into three categories, Cultural objectives, Religious objectives, and Economic objectives. Firstly, we

truly universal. Secondly, there are various religious objectives which create lesser number of

We roam around the swamped streets of New York, arms numb from attaching hundreds of posters
onto different buildings. Initially, we had planned to tape them only against the windows of random
grocery stores and other small businesses. It was my best friend, Fionn, however, who suggested that
sticking them on the lamp posts in the park, would also be a great idea. I obviously complied, wanting
to make sure there isn t a single area left untouched. Earlier this morning, my friend, Mitch, requested
a small favor from me. He said that if it isn t a hassle at all, he d appreciate it if I strolled through the
city while spreading the posters he created. They advertised the open mic night he s hosting, and the
time everyone is expected to be present at. He would have done it himself, but he was preoccupied
with the bar making sure it was spotless and ready for tomorrow. Every month, Mitch hosts an open

maximum capacity in under an hour. Many people, including myself, look forward to attending. It s
astonishing to witness how the bar instantly transforms from a place where people get blackout drunk,

Andrew Braaksma s On The Road Essay

the difference between himself and both his peers at school and coworkers at the factory. This journey
he makes, working at the factory every summer, is represented by the book he has Jack Kerouac s On

to this book, Braaksma seems to be discovering himself as well and learning important lessons about

Avoiding the Possessive Shadow of Society
Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, It is easy in the world to live after the world s opinion; it is easy in
solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect
sweetness the independence of solitude. (Emerson 1) Being one s self in today s society is increasingly
difficult every year and can have a major effect on the mental state of teenagers. It is easy to follow
the pack, but then one is just a faceless person marching in with the crowd with no true purpose; true
strength is in those who try to be themselves in the face of society. Many teens struggle with their
identities and can turn to self harm or even suicide to relieve their pain, yet not enough effort goes into
trying to help these struggling teens. In fact in a recent study done for Curing the illness: suicide
prevention , professor John Wensly states that Suicide rates are increasing alarmingly. Every year we
see a ten percent increase in suicide attempts alone. (Wensly 23) In his book Into the Wild, Jon
Krakauer writes about Christopher McCandless, who did anything but live in society s large and
possessive shadow. Chris broke free from society s chains and lived his life with adventure despite the
numerous people telling him to stop. Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer focuses on Christopher
McCandless and his mysterious decision to live on the road.

Typically, children act without reasoning things out in the mature way that adults do (or can do); and
they act much more out of immediate desires or passions rather than the rational desires that adults
have Oaks (2012). In November 1997, Mattel announced the creation of a global code of conduct for
its production facilities and contract manufacturers. Called the Global Manufacturing Principles
(GMP), the code covered such issues as wages and hours, child labor, forced labor, discrimination,
freedom of association, legal and ethical business practices, product safety and product quality,
protection of the environment, and respect for local cultures, values, and traditions. This process led to
the development of more than 200 specific standards. They define the compliance parameters for each
principle and cover all aspects of manufacturing operations; environment health and safety standards;
worker hiring and training; working conditions; working hours, performance bonuses, wages, and

programs. The China document alone is 60 pages long. Similar compliance documents were prepared
for 20 other countries where Mattel had operations. These documents are continuously revised in light
of changes in local labor and environmental laws. Honesty A virtue such as honesty or generosity is

it is true that children all over the world are waking up and going to work instead of going to school.
As the gap between the rich and poor grows, more children will be forced to give up school for work.
Is there an answer to this problem that will lead to the elimination of the dilemma? Has the practice

Some other major factors that contribute to child labor include parental illiteracy, lack of education,
exploitation of cheap labor, family expectations and traditions, limited choices for women and public
opinion that downplays the risk of early work for children. Children are often given employment
because they are easier to exploit than adults are. Children are considered powerless and paid much
less than their parents who are often unemployed or underemployed. Child labor is often considered a
problem that only affects developing countries, but child labor is a global issue. Asia, Africa and Latin
America have the highest rates of child labor, but the United States, Canada, Europe and other wealthy
nations also employ a small number of child laborers. Some of the most common jobs for child
laborers include domestic servants, factory workers, farmers and miners. In poverty stricken areas, it
is not uncommon for a child to desert school and begin work in order to provide for themselves and
their families. Boys often work in mines, farms and factories, while girls are trained in house duties
and sent off to become domestic servants. Domestic servants are especially at risk of becoming
victims of physical and sexual abuse by their employers. International economic trends have also
increased the amount of child labor in poor, developing countries. Debt, bloated military budgets and

The Time Of Ancient Greeks And Romans
Back to the time of ancient Greeks and romans. The disenfranchisement for felons began throughout
Europe and was referred to as the civil death. Disenfranchisement means to prevent from someone or
an individual the right to vote do to their criminal history in the past with this happening in The United
States it doesn t give the opportunity of ex felons to have input on any laws that being passed. For
many centuries criminals lost he many rights including their right to enter into contracts, there right to

During the reconstruction period the southern states began using disenfranchisement laws similar to

Langston Hughes Relationship In Relationships
Relationships, Love, Support, or Dependency?
The relationship between women and men might be complicated for some while sometimes even a
really loving relationship cannot survive if people chose their personal longing as a priority. Women
and men fight in relationships; fight for more independence, fight to prove their worthiness and keep
forgetting that love is not a fight but a mutual support. Both men and women have strengths and skills
that are important for a relationship and growth. We need to ensure that both partners play an
important role in a relationship so that it can benefit both parties and the relationship. James Mercer

Detection And Treatment Of Malocclusions And Other Dental...
Abstract
Detection and treatment of malocclusions and other dental deformities are a considerable field of work
in the plan of orthodontic treatment. Severe malformations of the midface such as maxillary or
mandibular deformity can be treated by the distraction and reformation of skull bones. During an
operation, the appropriate bony part of the mid face is separated from the rest of the skull (osteotomy),
slowly moved into the ideal position by way of a distraction device. In the current clinical practice,
planning for orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery was based on Computed Tomography
(CT) data sets. CT images are inefficient for helping the orthodontists and surgeons in treatment and
surgical planning. A tool is needed to help the physicians and surgeons in the treatment planning in
order to anticipate the results and give the accurate decision, in this paper there are preliminary
descriptive studies on DICOM images of the skull to help the orthodontists by providing the following
algorithms: Segmentation of the lower jaw (mandible), Segmentation of the upper jaw (maxilla) from
CT data, Segmentation of upper teeth, each tooth and computation of mandible volume.
Keywords: CT scans, threshold, K mean, Region growing, DICOM.

Persuasive Essay On Homework
Homework is defined as tasks assigned to students by school teachers that are intended to be carried
out during nonschool hours (Voorhees). Throughout the United States history, people s opinions have
varied on the topic of homework. Historically, variation in the opinions of homework have shifted
over time due to educational trends and world events. Today, the topic of homework continues to
cause debate among various organizations and schools of thought. Although homework has
demonstrated positive effects on students, homework should not be given to students because it is not
assigned appropriately, stressful for everyone, and does not benefit all students. While there are many
negatives towards assigning homework, there are a few positives that should be mentioned. In the
journal, The Case For and Against Homework , Robert Marzano and Debra Pickering state, The
average student in a class in which appropriate homework was assigned would score 23 percentile
points higher on tests of the knowledge addressed in that class than the average student in a class in
which homework was not assigned (76). This testing success that students receive from doing

Film Techniques Used to Emphasize Themes in V for Vendetta
Film techniques used to emphasize themes in V for Vendetta
In the film V for Vendetta, the director, James McTeigue uses symbolism, costume and dialogue to
emphasise the idea of everybody having a right to individuality, and the right and duty to resist forced
conformism.
James McTeigue uses symbolism in the film V for Vendetta to juxtapose the idea of individuality and
the resistance of forced conformity. The first important symbol used in the film is V s mask. This
symbol is shown in all of the scenes V appears in and again in the very last scene. In this scene
thousands of citizens gather wearing the masks and remove them. Masks often symbolize a character

At the beginning of the film, Evey dresses to blend in with the crowds; she wears light colours,
nothing that stands out. However towards the end of the film, V helps Evey to lose her fear and
discover who she is. He shaves her head. After this point in the film Evey begins to wear darker
coloured clothing such as blacks and greys, and wears her bald head with pride. She does not cover it
with wigs or hats. This is similar to the costume changes shown in the film the Matrix, which James
McTeigue helped direct. While in the Matrix the characters wear darker clothes, these colours show a
change in attitude and the characters desires to resist being controlled and forced into conformity by
the Machines. This change in costume is similar to that of V for Vendetta, which shows Evey s new
found confidence in her identity, and her willingness to resist conforming to the totalitarian society she

conformism in their own lives. He uses this film to warn viewers of the dangers of not resisting forced

Analysis Of Saving Private Ryan
This is where the film, Saving Private Ryan enters the highlight of movie watchers with Tom Hanks as
Captain Miller also lead character in the cast. Captain Miller leads a squad of vivacious soldiers
through blood, sweat, cruelty, and tears. The film brings battles of D Day on the beach and afterwards
fight from towns to search for Private James Ryan in effect of military post office sending out service
letters to beloved family members to being notified of their loved one s bravery in action upon their
death. The film does over dramatize on the emotional reaction on the General s order stating to rescue
Privat Ryan from the war due to recent news of loss of Private Ryan s brothers deaths as it stands

Captain Miller told them, Are we going to leave this bunker to cut down another squad that might not
know about this position? . The squad fell into line of command. However, the film does deviates
from the chain of command structure of where Captain Miller decides to overturn an order from
Master Sergeant giving an order to a Private to take his gun to kill a surrendering Nazi. Tom Hanks
a.k.a. Captain Miller turns the situation to non belligerence by reminding the squad of their humanity;
then he walks to tends to the dead United State Army soldiers and giving them a proper burial as the
rest of squad joins him in helping. Furthermore, the film reveals embroideries between facts and
exaggerations. The film adheres to the same military tactics of fighting the enemy by flanking and
forward assaults. For example, Captain Miller and his squad found an enemy s bunker position.
Captain Miller drew out a battle of pushing three sides in groups of two. One group up the middle,
second group up the right, and third group up the left assaulting the bunker. They used cover to lay
suppression fire on machine gun nest. When, one group was close enough within throwing distance
for grenades. They would throw grenades to force the enemy out of trench to expose them to fire. The
film is accurate on tactics. On D Day, the same method was used to advance to cover within the gun
fire of the bunkers. Captain Miller setting up ambush

Analysis Of Christopher Columbus s The Dinosaurs
Richard Reyes September 29, 2017 AP Literature and Composition Period: 3 SOS LAP TOPIC #4 :
Human beings did not always hold the reins as the most superior creatures in this universe. A long
time ago, the common people were inadequate specimens at the grace of the dinosaurs. Such an era
came to a staggering end from the grand celestial meteoroid which assaulted life into a different
direction. It acted as a stimulus which guided us into a contrasting atmosphere; we are corresponding
in that atmosphere in this very moment. However, that significant event was one of many. Objects
were not the only substance that acted as a converter. People from our past prevailed as human
catalysts. Whether it was the explorer: Christopher Columbus, or the ... Show more content on

Such missing naval would symbolize the missing connection that she would have with not only her
father, but with her own brother Macon Dead II. Likewise, within such time line she would see the
loss of her mother, her father due to racial violence in which he was blown into the sky to ascend into
a new role, and the connection that she had with her brother. Further along within the subsequent
future, another pregnancy is showcased. However, this pregnancy involves the well being of Macon
Dead II s baby boy. A turbulent series of events transpires later on leading to Macon wanting the child
to be aborted, but that didn t go accordingly as he wished. She saved my life. And yours, Macon. She
saved yours too. She watched you like you were her own. Until your father threw her out. (Morrison

guiding light that would show us the past which would be the one and only Macon Dead III, also
known as Milkman . She understood the significance of a child being the light that would bring about
a new era. Her understanding of not being wanted was also taken into account, which can be
interpreted as a way in which she helped Milkman s mom (Ruth) keep the baby. Further on we are at
the scene of the birth, in which Pilate is in

Modern Techniques Of Mrs Dalloway
Virginia Woolf started writing Mrs. Dalloway in June 1922 and she completed the novel by October
1924. With the publication of Mrs Dalloway in 1925, Woolf offered one of her greatest novels to the
literary world. Mrs Dalloway is known to be her one of the most experimental novels as she
experimented with the form of the novel. In this chapter there would be an endeavour to analyse how
Mrs Woolf has used modern techniques while writing this novel. The novel is created from her two
short stories, Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street and the unfinished The Prime Minister . Mrs Dalloway is
about a single day a Wednesday in mid June 1923 in life of Clarissa Dalloway, the social hostess. Mrs
Dalloway is the same who made a brief appearance in The Voyage Out. There she was exquisite and
bright and excessively interested and now at fifty two, in Mrs Dalloway, a little wiser and more
pensive.

Dalloway covers one day in life of an upper class housewife Clarissa Dalloway. The novel
interweaves two seemingly unconnected storylines. Clarissa, aged fifty two has recently recovered
from an illness. The novel begins with Mrs Dalloway s getting ready in the morning to go out to buy
flowers for her party she is to host that evening. Throughout the morning, Clarissa reflects on her past,
including her decision to marry reliable Richard Dalloway thirty years earlier, instead of the enigmatic
and demanding Peter Walsh. Her conflicts are reintroduced as Peter makes a surprise visit to her at her
home.
Meanwhile, the second storyline begins with Septimus Warren Smith, a shell shocked war veteran, out
on the street with his Italian wife, Lucrezia. Septimus struggles with the after effects of the war,
hearing voices and feeling that life has little meaning. A car backfiring paralyzes him, and he reflects
on his life. Septimus lost his good friend and commanding officer Evans in the war and continues to
carry on conversations with this lost

The Bodhisattva s Body
The elaborateness of the bodhisattva remains in the figure as whole and in its separate parts,
specifically the headdress and its sword halo, the cloth, and the lotus flower seat. As a whole, the
bodhisattva is made up of multiple parts: the sword halo, the headdress, the bodhisattva s body and
arms, the lotus flower seat, and the earth base. The sword halo appears to be slightly detached from
the bodhisattva s body, mostly connected to the lotus flower seat. The halo gives the body more depth
because it provides a background. This means that the bodhisattva is not in need of having a highly
decorated backdrop behind it, especially because the halo creates an interesting shadow. The shadow
is defined by the holes within the halo and the swords ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The sheer amount of weapons the bodhisattva, including the ax, trident, and spear, strikes fear in those
who disobey. This image instills a sense of reverence because of the danger that could come from
being bad in nature. It also promotes the desire to worship and become a devout Buddhist because of
the consequences that one could face on other paths of life. If on Buddhist path, one has this
bodhisattva to protect and guide them. It elevates the value of Buddhism and its teachings; the viewer
will see Buddhism as the way of life that will help them reach Heaven and achieve an afterlife that
other religions cannot achieve. To go along with the weapons, there are eight arms in total, all doing
different things: between holding objects and signing mudras. It is overwhelming to see eight arms
because of how otherworldly it is; furthermore, the arms all have their own function. This being has
the capability to control more than two arms, without any difficulty. The admiration for the power and
strength of the bodhisattva develops as the viewer takes in the the arms and weaponry. It would be
necessary to take multiple visits to see the bodhisattva to begin to process everything the arms are
doing and what their positions are. While this is outrightly stunning, the finer details remain to be
found by the viewer, an example being the patterned

Sleeping Disorders Research Paper
There are many different types of sleeping disorders that may affect the way you sleep at night and act
during the day. A sleeping disorder is a change in your sleep cycle or a quirk that can negatively affect
your health. They prevent you from getting a good night s sleep. Although they sound harsh, most
sleeping disorders can be treated or can improve with treatment. According to scientists, there are
roughly 80 types of sleeping disorders. Four of the most common ones are: insomnia, sleep apnea,
restless leg syndrome, and narcolepsy. Insomnia is separated into 3 different types: transient, acute,
and chronic. Transient insomnia occurs when your symptoms last for only a couple of days. Acute, or
short term insomnia, occurs when your symptoms last for a few weeks. Chronic insomnia is the type
of insomnia that may last for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sleep apnea is a disorder in which your breathing is interrupted during sleep. There are two separate
forms of sleep apnea, one is obstructive and the other is central. Obstructive sleep apnea is when the
tissue in your throat collapses and blocks your airway, and central sleep apnea is when your brain
doesn t signal your muscles to breathe. This disorder can be caused if you: smoke, are an overweight
male, have high blood pressure, or have a neck circumference larger than 15.75 inches. A few of the
symptoms of sleep apnea are: extremely loud snoring, choking during sleep, shortness of breath,
daytime fatigue, waking up with a sore throat, or using the restroom a lot at night. Sleep apnea can be
treated with a machine called the CPAP device. The CPAP device is a mask machine that provides a
stream of air through your nose and mouth. This device keeps your airways clear at all times, while
you sleep. Another way to treat it is by having a tonsillectomy or an adenoid removal. Nearly 22
million Americans suffer from sleep apnea and the majority don t even know

At Youth Outlook, member attendance is optional each week, and we don t always see the same teenagers every week at each of the drop in sites. Therefore, it becomes a little more difficult when trying to set goals for some of the clients at the agency. Recently, at one of the groups, I talked about establishing healthy boundaries with the clients. As a group, all of the clients decided to incorporate weekly guidelines for setting appropriate limits with one another during their time together. I thought this was an excellent example of the clients coming together to support one another while attending weekly sessions. Another recent example of shared goals for the group was setting up a Halloween party at the drop at some of the drop in sites. Each location required some individuals of the group to participate in tasks for the Halloween Parties. Each person of the group must complete a task such as brining, food, drinks, party favors, or board games. The ultimate goal for the teenagers was to plan and implement a party for the whole group to enjoy! At my agency, I have begun working on my goals outlined by my learning agreement. One of my goals is to develop programming for the adolescents at each location that I attend every week. The programming that the agency has provided in the past has included educational topics, health education, along with other related issues that pertain to the gay, lesbian and transgender community. • 3. Theories Of Corrections And Specific Deterrence Corrections or Penal system is the term given in America to describe the governmental entity that is responsible for punishment and surveillance of convicted criminals. The scope of corrections is one that covers many areas in the criminal justice system, such as incarceration, parole and probation. The common belief or ideal is that the purpose of the correctional system is to deter criminal behavior and also punish criminal behavior. These ideas of deterrence can be broken down into two theories, general deterrence and specific deterrence these two theories are what most penologist study to understand how to stop criminal behavior. Many who believe in general deterrence states that the American correctional system is not tough enough on crime, therefore that s why we have high rate of criminal behavior. Advocates for specific deterrence also believe that punishing offenders severely will make them unwilling to offend in the future while also rehabilitating the criminal back into society. • 4. Analyzing The Beginning Of Science In the beginning, ...what was in the beginning? Science is only starting to scratch the surface of our origins, but all these findings are rather recent. Humans didn t always have carbon dating and archaeology to find answers about their past, so they had to draw their own conclusions based off of their own lifestyles. So back to the earlier question, what was in the beginning? According to the Mayans Popol Vuh, there was nothing. Then the existing deities, Heart of Sky and the Plumed Serpent, joined together to give themselves the power to form the Earth from the water with their words. Heart of Sky met with the Plumed Serpent, and together they agreed on the creation of man, who would maintain the Earth and worship them. So they created animals, and made them the guardians of the forest. However, when the creators ordered the animals to speak, they could only screech and howl. Frustrated, the gods allowed them to remain guardians of the forest, but decreed that they should be eaten. After this attempt, four sub deities, the Modeler, the Maker, the Begetter, and the Bearer, attempt to make humanity out of clay. However, this creation, while being humanoid, cannot sustain itself and crumbles and falls apart. Next, the wooden humans, the manikins are created, but they know no gods, and are ugly, and lead their lives without care for their environment. The manikins are eventually killed by the animals and cookery. Finally, the gods pull themselves together, and put their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Summary Of Blink By Malcolm Gladwell Blink In Chapter 2 of Blink by Malcolm Gladwell, Gladwell insist that what we think of as freewill is largely an illusion: much of the time, we are simply operating on automatic pilot, and the way we think and act and how we think and act on the spur of the moment are a lot more susceptible to outside influences than we realize. (58). Gladwell is referring to priming, as human beings, our behavior and decision making are often influenced by subtle triggers we are either aware of or not aware of. As humans we are vulnerable to the most subtle stimuli. Gladwell provides examples of priming with different types of exams and games administered to college students. An area where priming occurs on a daily occurrence is at the grocery store because the products sold are strategically placed on the shelves to target a specific audience company s want to sell their product to, the price tag are designed with colors that we associates subconsciously with spending, and there are signs located all around the store that tell you that you ll be saving money so that you buy more of that certain product or so you are more likely to shop at that particular store. Priming is when subtle triggers we are either aware of or not aware of influence our behavior. Gladwell has the reader imagine that he is a professor proctoring a scrambled sentence test where students were asked to walk down a long hallway into an exam room where they were given an exam with a list of five word sets and asked to change each word set into a grammatically four word sentence as fast as possible. The test was not difficult but the college students walked down the hallway more slowly than they walked towards the classroom. This is because ingrained in the list were certain words that were associated with being old. This test, which was developed by a clever psychologist named John Bargh, makes our adaptive unconsciousness ponder about the state of being old. Further research suggests that individuals can be primed to behave differently, various words may be used to influence people to be polite or rude. He deduces that economic factors, parenting and the troublesome environments largely influence the violent norms within this culture. For example, a Caucasian individual may dress in baggy clothes and speak in slang in public to imitate what people label the African American youth to be uniform. However, this individual in some instances could act completely different at home or in other environments such as family gatherings or church. According to the professor of history at South Carolina State University, Doctor Stanley Harrold, The Atlantic slave trade began in Africa in the mid 1400s and lasted into the 19th century. Initially, Portuguese traders purchased small numbers of slaves from kingdoms on the western coast of Africa and transported them for sale in Portugal and Spain. The Atlantic slave trade did not become a huge enterprise until after European nations began colonizing the Americas during the 1500s. During the 1600s the Dutch pushed the Portuguese out of the trade and then contested the British and French for control of it. By 1713 Britain had emerged as the dominant slave trading nation. The music from these famous composers are some of the world s most recognizable and beautiful classics of all time. Music of these eras are still being used in many of today s movies and commercials. Musical characteristics developed from these eras are still used and heard presently in popular music. The art of the Baroque period was very colorful and dramatic, which translated into the music created at the time. The idea of being very expressive and embellishing in detail would lead to the development of opera. Opera is a dramatic play that is acted out through music. In opera, a soloist must be able to act and sing out the mood of the text or libretto. This expressive singing accompanied by a bass line or basso continuo is called monody. This idea of a new texture would feature the distinction between the high voice that carries one melody and the low voice or bass. The accompanying bass line was played by harpsichord with the addition of a bassoon or cello (Wright 6 3a,6 3b). Claudio Monteverdi, who is considered an originator of opera who composed the earliest example of the genre called Orfeo. Based on ancient Greek mythology, which was the initial intention of opera, Orfeo is a drama about the mythical Greek god Orpheus. To rescue his bride Euridice, he goes down to Hades. Theme Of Women In A Doll s House How the Need for Independence Contributed to the Failure of Marriage in Ibsen s A Doll s House The play, A Doll s House, was written by Henrik Ibsen in the year 1879. In this time period, men and women were not equal. The main protagonist, Nora, had decisions decided for her throughout her life. At a certain point, she realized it was time for her to seek independence. This search for self sufficiency caused many issues in her marriage. From early on in the play, it is apparent how submissive Nora is to her husband, Torvald: You haven t any idea how many expenses we skylarks and squirrels have, Torvald (14). He uses pet names such as squirrel and spendthrift to address Nora, comparing her to feeble animals. These are metaphors that Ibsen uses to display how most women were treated in this time period. They were seen as objects or fragile little animals that needed the protection of a man. Nora goes along with these names and even refers to herself as them in order to please him and get what she wants, which is usually money. Torvald is controlling and possessive when it comes to Nora, but she doesn t know any better because her dad treated her in a similar manner. She s the mother of three kids and a woman, so work is not a realistic option for her. This is another reason why she s so dependent on Torvald for money. Lewis is a book made up of 31 letters of teaching, communication, and familial advice communicated with the only two physical tempters in the book, Screwtape, the mentor, and his young eager to learn nephew or mentee, Wormworth. Screwtape uses the letters to aid him in influencing his nephew to do as he does in actions, thoughts, and in his work and convinces him to follow the way of Satan, their Father and to follow in both Screwtape and the Devil s path. Wormworth s patient is a young male who has newly tried to connect with the Enemy , God. Screwtape uses very common flaws, some of which are, materialism, physical attraction, and gluttony to try to draw him away from God, and brainwash him into believing all of his thoughts and detesting all outside sources as much as he can. The letters utilize reoccurring literary devices utilized throughout the letters, two of the most prevalent are satire and irony. The Screwtape Letters are infused with Irony, through statements that the readers see and comprehend as see as what is most commonly perceived in human culture. (Emerson 1) Being one s self in today s society is increasingly difficult every year and can have a major effect on the mental state of teenagers. It is easy to follow the pack, but then one is just a faceless person marching in with the crowd with no true purpose; true strength is in those who try to be themselves in the face of society. Many teens struggle with their identities and can turn to self harm or even suicide to relieve their pain, yet not enough effort goes into trying to help these struggling teens. In fact in a recent study done for Curing the illness: suicide prevention , professor John Wensly states that Suicide rates are increasing alarmingly. Every year we see a ten percent increase in suicide attempts alone. (Wensly 23) In his book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer writes about Christopher McCandless, who did anything but live in society s large and possessive shadow. • 47. The Bodhisattva s Body The elaborateness of the bodhisattva remains in the figure as whole and in its separate parts, specifically the headdress and its sword halo, the cloth, and the lotus flower seat. As a whole, the bodhisattva is made up of multiple parts: the sword halo, the headdress, the bodhisattva s body and arms, the lotus flower seat, and the earth base. The sword halo appears to be slightly detached from the bodhisattva s body, mostly connected to the lotus flower seat. The halo gives the body more depth because it provides a background. This means that the bodhisattva is not in need of having a highly decorated backdrop behind it, especially because the halo creates an interesting shadow. The shadow is defined by the holes within the halo and the swords ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The sheer amount of weapons the bodhisattva, including the ax, trident, and spear, strikes fear in those who disobey. This image instills a sense of reverence because of the danger that could come from being bad in nature. It also promotes the desire to worship and become a devout Buddhist because of the consequences that one could face on other paths of life. If on Buddhist path, one has this bodhisattva to protect and guide them. It elevates the value of Buddhism and its teachings; the viewer will see Buddhism as the way of life that will help them reach Heaven and achieve an afterlife that other religions cannot achieve. To go along with the weapons, there are eight arms in total, all doing different things: between holding objects and signing mudras. It is overwhelming to see eight arms because of how otherworldly it is; furthermore, the arms all have their own function. This being has the capability to control more than two arms, without any difficulty. The admiration for the power and strength of the bodhisattva develops as the viewer takes in the the arms and weaponry. It would be necessary to take multiple visits to see the bodhisattva to begin to process everything the arms are doing and what their positions are. While this is outrightly stunning, the finer details remain to be found by the viewer, an example being the patterned ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
