Swimming Biomechanics
If you woke up breathing, congratulations! You have another chance. ~Andrea Boydston
I began swimming at the age of 4 and I was fortunate to earn a college swimming scholarship at
Purdue University. At Purdue, I was a good swimmer and really worked hard each and every day.
However, my at the time girlfriend (and current wife, also a swimmer) always said I looked like a
recreational swimmer! She made this comment as I wore old school foam goggles and my head
moved all around during freestyle. Needless to say, my breathing biomechanics were far from ideal,
despite being on a collegiate swimming scholarship!
Breathing is a simplistically complex task. Everyone can breathe, but the mechanics are complicated.
Unfortunately, in swimming this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, this information isn t ground breaking. Yet, if one is anxious or stressed, they ll begin
taking short, shallow breaths. This short, shallow breathing is highly damaging to swimming
performance, as it will increase your breathing frequency and fatigue of the inspiratory muscles.
Moreover, you ll constantly feel out of breath and tired with this fast and shallow breathing pattern.
Tip: If you can t stay relaxed, hold you breath for 3 seconds underwater, then exhale directly before
your next breath.
Lifting the head or armpit breathing are two common swimming flaws during the freestyle breathing
motion. These motions greatly impede the swimming stroke as they create more drag. Recently,
Formosa (2014) researched breathing and drag in elite male and female swimmers.
The male participants demonstrated that the breathing action caused a greater (26 %) net drag force
compared to the females (16 %). To further understand the influence of breathing on swimming
technique, each stroke was analyzed and comparisons were made between the breathing and non

Leanro De Vinci Accomplishments
I find Leandro de Vinci most interesting. He was a painter, architect, inventor, and student of all things
scientific. A true genius in my eyes. Leandro was born April 15, 1452 in Vinci, Italy. His hometown
was within the territory of the the republic of Florence under the rule of Medici. He was born out of
wedlock, and his parents were Caterina and Messer Piero Fruosino Di Vinci. Leandro died May 2,
1519 at his residence at Clos Luce. There are few documents on Leandro early years. He stayed with
his mother home until he was 5 years old. Then he moved into his fathers household in the beginning
of 1457. During his childhood, he received informal education in mathematics, geometry and Latin.
When he was 14 years old he took up art training

Application Of Porter s Five Model On Michael Kors
3. Application of Porter s Five Model on Michael Kors
Four forces that affect Michael Kors
Porter s five model is defined as the framework that evaluate the position of a company in the external
environment with focus drawn on the level of competitiveness (Roy 2011). The framework considers
factors such as rivalry, substitute goods, the power of suppliers and buyers as well as new entrants.
Four forces can influence the success of Michael Kors. The first one is competitive rivalry. Here, the
struggle is about maintaining performance despite different tactics used by different companies to
increase sales. For instance, Ralph Lauren uses premium prices for quality products to differentiate
itself, while Coach uses product variety within the line of handbags to remain competitive (Stewart
2016). Also, when the industry is flooded with similar companies producing similar merchandise, the
probability of a company stagnating is high because consumers have a variety to pick from. Hence,
the need to establish loyal customers.
Michael Kors is also facing the threat of new entrants. McClatchey and Murray (2011) observe that
most talented designers working for big labels such as Stella McCartney and Gucci typically go on to
create their own labels increasing the intensity of the competition. However, the newer labels take
time before amassing a followership and loyal customers because of capital constraints, lack of
experience, and retaliation by established brands. Bargaining power

Analysis Of The Astonishing Life Of Octavian
In the book The Astonishing Life of Octavian by M.T. Anderson relates to literary elements like theme
and conflict to show the struggle of Octavian and other Africans who came to America to receive
freedom since people called America the land of free. But when Africans came to the America in the
1770s they were demoted all the way to servants of people for free. Even Africans were limited to
everything even education. African Americans suffered a lot in the beginning of the United States. The
author uses theme and and conflict to show us. Theme is the subject, topic, or is a recurring idea.
Conflict is a struggle between two opposing forces usually a protagonist and an antagonist. The

Limiting Child Poverty
Child poverty: Limiting children s life chances
Ellie Chadwick
Child poverty is an issue which affects our society and will continue to as more individuals struggle
from low income to be able to provide their families with the basic materials needed to survive.
Throughout analysing the article you are able to identify that main purpose behind the text is to
discuss the issue around child poverty and the detrimental effects it can have a child s lifestyle,
education and health. With this, the article then goes on to discuss with a child who is suffering from
poverty their view on their life experiences and how it affects them physically, mentally, emotionally
and socially.
Society is able to notice how child poverty has been on the increase for the past number of years and
how this has gone on to develop moral panic. As more individuals are made aware of the significance
poverty can have this creates public anxiety as it threatens the standards of society. With regards to
living conditions, those who suffer from poverty are at an increased chance of living in inadequate
living conditions. This is seen as a massive factor which can have a negative impact on a child s health
and wellbeing as they don t have that sense of security in their own home. As Thornhill (2014) suggest
this is the prism through which they experience many other services . Poor housing can have
significant consequences on a child s health and the likelihood of them becoming unwell is higher as

Palm oil is an edible plant oil which has become a common ingredient in many consumer products.
Today, around 50 percent of the goods we use every day contain palm oil, from processed foods to

the last few years. With 54 million tons in 2011, it is the most widely produced vegetable oil
worldwide. It has the highest yield of any oil crop and is the cheapest vegetable oil to produce and
refine. Since oil palms need a rainforest climate consistently high humidity and temperatures and a lot

Hester as an Imperfect Heroine
The Scarlet Letter, a story of Hester Prynne and her paramour, Reverend Dimmesdale, and her
malicious husband in pursuit for revenge, Roger Chillingworth. The novel begins in the Puritan
society in Boston, Massachusetts, during the 1640 s. The town first ostracizes Hester because of their
strong religious beliefs. Hester is then faced with an immense struggle against the town and Roger
Chillingworth. Through this struggle she is developed into a heroine, or a woman admired for her
courage, achievements, or noble qualities; although she is not the perfect heroine because she starts
her journey at the lowest point in Puritan society, in sin. In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter,
Hester Prynne overcomes the Puritan community and Roger Chillingworth to defy adversity and
become a heroine whom everyone to admire.
Even though the Puritan society aims to discourage Hester, she finds a way to display her pride and
grace. To begin, Hester makes her way out of jail exhibiting her dignity when appearing with the
scarlet letter before the town: On the breast of her gown, in fine red cloth surrounded with an elaborate
embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread, appeared the letter A. It was so artistically done,
and with so much fertility and gorgeous luxuriance of fancy, that it had all the effect of a last and
fitting decoration to the apparel which she wore... (37).

The several targets are general objectives that cannot be adequately measured, as they do not specify
actual values, which would permit them to be compared with future data. They are ambiguous and
their success or failure will have to be judged subjectively by the 2030 assembly. Despite this
problem, they can still be contextualized using various characteristics. Target 7.1 states that universal
access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services will be established by 2030. If universal is
considered to be the totality of individuals, a strong estimate of this state will be possible. Current
statistics of the world s population possessing electricity, for example, exist, which indicates this

Adapting to a Long Term Care Facility Essay
The character Dorothy said in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, there is no place like home (Baum, 1960,
p. 45). Sadly, many of our elderly live in Long Term Care Facilities (LTCF). The transition from living
in their own homes, to living in a LTCF, can be a traumatic experience. Poor adaptation to a LTCF
may cause depression, malnutrition and significantly reduce the lifespan of the elder. Thus, it is
imperative, that nurse s recognize this promptly. According to Agnes and Guralnik (2008) adaptation
is a gradual change in behavior to conform to the prevailing cultural pattern (p. 15). When elders are
placed in a LTCF, whether it be voluntarily or involuntarily, they must give up certain liberties that are
taken for granted. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
160). She goes on to say that adaptation to a LTCF is the process by which someone copes with the
transition into the life of being a LTCF client (p.159). How the elders view their situation also plays a
major role on their adaptation to the LTCF. When someone views the environment in an absolute
negative way, they are going to struggle to become adapted. On the other hand, if they look at the
positives of the environment they may adapt more appropriately. According to Sister Callista Roy s
theory, adaptation is the process and outcome of individuals and groups, who use conscious
awareness, self reflection and choice to create human and environmental integration (Bergland and
Kirkevold, 2006, p.686). This theory lends to adaptation of living in a LTCF by examining a key issue,
the elders choice. With personal experience in this matter, it seems as if elders who make the decision
of moving into a LTCF better adapt to the environment. In my opinion, a lot of how elders adapt to
living in a LTCF depends on the choices they make. If they sit around, and think poor pitiful me, they
will have a much harder time adapting to their new environment. If the elder becomes engaged in their
new environment, they will adapt more efficiently. As Parker (2013) mentioned, she stays heavily
involved in activities that the LTCF provides, but also performs a multitude of other activities in her
apartment

Kiss Of Judas Essay
1. The painting I have chosen is called the Kiss of Judas by Giotto di Bondone, a Florentine painter
and architect. This painting is standing approximately twelve feet tall. It was created in the fourteenth
century between the early years of 1305 1306 in the South Wall of Scrovegni, Chapel in Padua, Italy.
The materials Giotto di Bondone used were called fresco painting. Fresco is Italian for the word
French According to ArtLex it is A method of painting on plaster, either dry (dry fresco or fresco
secco) or wet (wet or true fresco). In the latter method, pigments are applied to thin layers of wet
plaster so that they will be absorbed and the painting becomes part of the wall .
2. In this painting I see a conflict between Judas and Jesus Christ. A bunch of men in a dark setting
holding up torches dealing the worse possible outcome. Judas was one of the twelve disciples. Jesus

When it comes down to the visual elements of a painting Giotto di Bondone knows how to make his
paintings come to life. The Kiss of Judas, to me, seems to be a painted with a sense of realism. Not
only with the way had the clothes fit around the people in these paintings bodies but also the color.
Blue, yellow, and red is shown to be very important colors to capture this moment. With these colors
the shadows are brought out to make this painting look natural. As I mentioned before the setting is a
bit dark and Bondone uses a certain balance between what the people are wearing and the outside
frame. The most important element I seen was the lines. When Judas is kissing Jesus you can see the
torches creating a certain line focusing on their faces of this kiss. The second thing I notice is the
space in this painting. Looking to the left there is a man pulling another one, and on the right letting a
person know that there are more layers of things going on outside of this

A Sociological Look at JAWS The movie I choose to review was Jaws, which is one of my favorites
and a timeless classic. A traditional story about man against beast takes place on an island that

The three main (human) characters are Brody (Roy Scheider), the police chief, who came to the island

Being an outsider no one is inclined to listen to Hooper. To proven his point Hooper and Brody sneak
down to the docks to cut open the shark. Among many strange findings none are human remains. This
piques Hooper s curiosity and he drags Brody (who is afraid of boats and water) out on his boat to see
what they can find in the waters surrounding the island. They come across a boat wreck and upon
closer inspection they discover that the wreck is the work of the sought after shark.

The Canadian innovation commercialization program was developed in 2012 (Government Services

The ideal image of nuclear family used to be described as a male husband, a female wife and their
kids; however, in few decades, the term family has become diverse without any blood related
relationships. Because of this recent change of family values, it is easy to find that present television
shows also reflect the new concept of family and influence the recognition of the viewers at the same
time. Among many TV programs such as Simpsons , F is for family and How I met your mother ,
Modern Family is a representative show dealing with modern family types and values. It is a domestic
TV sitcom of ABC, featuring the lives of three different types of fictional families. Apart from the
humorous stories, it becomes very popular because of suggesting that friendly characters are easy to

Frankenstein Cruelty Analysis
Everyday, we hear stories of theft, abuse, and murder. Instantly, we judge the perpetrators. However,
why do some people commit these crimes? What causes them to take this path? Are they just
inherently bad, or are their actions influenced from external factors around them? Mary Shelley s
Frankenstein explores this interesting notion of tabula rasa the idea that babies are born with a blank
slate, suggesting that humans are not just pre packaged with certain behaviours or prejudices. Rather,
it is learned. People are born pure and compelled to do evil at the feet of exclusion, isolation or abuse,
just like Frankenstein and/or the monster . In this sense, acts of cruelty in Frankenstein show that
every one of us is capable of taking this heinous route of personal and projected destruction with the
absence of companionship. However, there are always intrinsic motivations or characteristics revealed
about the perpetrator/victim during these violent events. Thus, with further inspection of both
Frankenstein and his creation s acts of cruelty, the reader is exposed to their insecurities, perspective
on women, and dire vengefulness. Violent and cruel acts are usually done to display power or
dominance. Yet, in Frankenstein, they can be counterproductive and reveal insecurities or buried fears
instead. The earliest example of cruelty is when Frankenstein essentially abandons his child right after
creating it: ...I beheld the wretch ― the miserable monster whom I had

American Plantation Social Classes
Social classes have existed throughout all of history. The categorizing of slaves on American
Plantations is often overlooked, but there were in fact many levels of slave classes. The use of a class
system helped plantation owners to punish and reward their slaves as well as to keep their business

The City Of Fort Worth, Texas
I grew up in the suburbs on the North side of Fort Worth, Texas, more specifically Keller, Texas.
Keller had a population close to 40,000 people by the time I left for Texas A M, but when I first
arrived there the population was only about 20,000 people. It is a growing town with a ton of
commodities and things to do, new activities are always popping up, such as the new movie theater
that was just built 5 miles away from my house. Being part of the suburbs of Fort Worth, it is mostly
organized in housing developments, with shopping centers scattered around. In each housing
development there were at least two schools, ranging from elementary to high school. At the center of
the town is downtown Keller, with the Town Hall at the center of ... Show more content on

Music has a big impact on my life, it is one of my favorite things in the world. My music library is so
diverse, so it is hard for me to pick my favorite genre, from hip hop to rock to country. I find it all
tasteful. If I had to say may favorite though it would be alternative rock, mostly because my favorite
band is the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their bass lines are amazing, and their music has so much heart
and emotion in it, it s something that everyone can jam along to. My least favorite would have to be
screamo, an off shoot of metal. It is just too angry and you cannot understand anything the singer is
saying, it isn t something that is easy for me to appreciate. The Hobbit is my favorite book, the ore
behind it keeps me interested and the way it is written is a completely different style than today s
writing. The writing style almost seems archaic but it has an elegance to it that is extremely difficult to
achieve. My upperclassmen are the heroes in my life right now. Being in the Corps of Cadets at A M
can be difficult sometimes, and without them motivating me and supporting me, I don t believe I
would be able to complete half of the tasks that I have completed. They inspire me threw greatness

Sigmund Freud And Freud s Theory Of The Unconscious Mind...
A twenty one year old woman by the name of Anna O that was caring for her ailing father began to
experience severe debilitating physical and psychological symptoms. During this period, most
psychoses were labeled as hysteria. Anna O began to hallucinate, experience paralysis, and have an
extreme aversion to food and drink. She underwent treatment with Dr. Breuer (Oxford Journals,
2005). When Dr. Breuer treated Anna O for her hysteria and her mental and physical symptoms he
discovered that as she began to talk of hidden thought processes about her experiences during their
discussions, whether through hypnosis or while conscious, certain symptoms would disappear (Oxford
Journals, 2005). Dr. Breuer discussed Anna O s case with Sigmund Freud and Freud later perfected
this talking cure. Also known as sweeping the chimney or sweeping the mind. Sigmund Freud s theory
of the unconscious mind claimed that people experience hysteria or other reactions in response to
repressed experiences. The unconscious contains all those drives, urges, or instincts that are beyond
our awareness but that nevertheless motivate most of our words, feelings, and actions (Feist Feist,
2008). Freud and his theory are responsible for the birth of what is known today as psychoanalysis and
Freud is considered the founding father of psychoanalysis. In treating Anna O, Freud would examine
the relationship between Anna and her father and check for other possible triggers from her life that

Reflection On The Restroom
Today s experience at my site base was much different than on Monday. I came at the very beginning
of the school day, so that I could observe the procedures that Mrs. Wright uses when the students
arrive to school. Furthermore, I was able to participate more frequently during this observation than
the previous one, which I appreciated because I was able to get to know the students better. One aspect
of today s class that I felt worked really well was Mrs. Wright s morning routine. She welcomes the
students into the classroom and asks them to use the restroom. If the restroom is full, she allows the
students to go directly to the carpet where they can play with toys, such as blocks, magnetic
blocks/shapes, and Lego fences. Mrs. Wright kept mental note of students who went to the bathroom
and those who did not. Personally, I think it would be easier to have a checklist with ever student s
names on it, and place a check mark next to the student s name after they use the restroom. This would
ensure that all students go and would avoid accidents. It was very evident that the students were used
to this routine because they were aware of what they should have been doing. Naturally, there were
students who did not want to use the restroom, so watching how the teacher and her aids addressed
these challenges. Again, I disagree with the way that they handled these situations, they would grab
the student by the arm and drag them to the bathroom. This is very dangerous and not professional in
any way. Nevertheless, this only occurred twice in the morning. Another aspect of the day that I
thought went amazingly well was the cutting activity that Mrs. Wright had the students participate in.
She had created trolls for each student out of toilet paper rolls and she had glued pieces of
construction paper inside the toilet paper roll. The students were then asked to use scissors to cut the
construction paper hair off their trolls. The best part about this activity was that Mrs. Wright and Mrs.
Foster were keeping anecdotal notes of how the students were holding the scissors, which hand they
were using to cut, and if they were actually cutting the paper or just ripping it. This was amazing for
me to see because it allowed me

Themes Of The Book Echo, Great Ambition
All books have themes that teach the reader a lesson. The theme of the book Echo is great ambition.
Another book that has a great theme is Tuck Everlasting which has the theme of hope. I have read so
many books with many great themes. But one book that I read in my summer reading assignment is
Red Queen. This book s theme was so intriguing. Usually, books have themes like friendship, love,
and kindness. But the Red Queen had a very interesting theme. The theme of this book was trust and
betrayal.
Now before I launch into a wide ranged explanation of why it has a theme of trust and betrayal let me
explain the summary of the book to you. Now in this book Mare Barrow s world is divided by blood.

They don t answer me, exchanging glances instead. A few names run through my head, servants and
kitchen boys who would support the cause. But the person who joins us is no servant. He s not even
Red. Maven.
I don t know whether to scream or run when I see my betrothed appear from the shadows. He s a
prince, he s Silver, he s the enemy, and yet, here he is, standing with one of the leaders of the Scarlet
Guard. His companion Holland, an aging Red servant with years of service behind him, seems to swell
with pride. She steps toward us, gun in hand, but she s just as nervous as he is. Still, her voice does not
shake. I want to hear it from your lips, little prince. Tell me what you told him, she says tipping her
head toward Holland. Maven sneers at little prince, his lips curving in distaste, but he doesn t snap at
her. I want to join the Guard, he says, his voice full of conviction. She moves quickly, cocking the
pistol and taking aim in the same motion. My heart seems to stop when she presses the barrel to his
forehead, but Maven doesn t flinch. Why? she hisses.
Because the world is wrong. What my father has done, what my brother will do, is wrong. He is a
prince and, worst of all, the queen s son. I didn t want to trust him for this very reason, for the secrets
he kept hidden. Or maybe this is what he

The Correlation Between Influencing Organization Culture...
The correlation between influencing organization culture and leaderships go hand and hand.
Organizational culture refers to the beliefs and values that exist in an organization and to the beliefs of
the staff and the foreseen value of their work that will influence their work ethic. Schein (1992, 2004)
defines the culture of a group or organization as shared assumptions and beliefs about the world and
their place in it, the nature of time and space, human nature, and human relationships. (pg. 326) On the
other hand, leadership provides the vision and helps the organization move in the direction to
accomplish the best or the organization and the employees. It is important to understand the
relationship between organizational culture and leadership and how they influence each other. Yukl
states that by changing the culture of an organization, top management can indirectly influence the
motivation and behavior of organization members. Research on organizational culture provides further
insight into the dynamics of transformational leadership and the processes by which a leader s
charisma may become institutionalized. (pg. 326) In the article, it talks about four ways to influence
organizational culture Programs, Systems, Structures, and Cultural Forms.
Design of management systems and programs
Criteria for rewards and personnel decisions
Design of structure and facilities
Symbols, ritual, ceremonies, and stories.

Voodoo Season Summary
Intro The practice of Voodoo has been around for many centuries. The word itself means the great
spirit. It originally started with the African slaves who combined their West African traditions and
beliefs with Catholicism. To many Voodoo has been seen as cult and something that begets fear. This
has been a common misunderstanding and misconception and that is part of the reason why I have
chosen this topic. If one were to look up the definition of Voodoo it would be defined as an African
religious cult practiced in the Caribbean and later in the Unites States, which involves animism,
sorcery, religious rituals and spirit possession. Although some of the above is true people perceive that
definition in a negative form. The portrayal of Voodoo ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Epiphany In Greasy Lake
Most teenagers go through a phase in their lives where rules are irrelevant to them and they step out of
the social norm. During this phase, teenagers experiment with various illegal activities, such as
drinking, drugs, sex and hanging out with the wrong crowd. These experiences usually open up a
teenagers eyes and allows them to see and guide their future. The real question is, will the teenagers
learn from their mistakes in life, or continue down the same path? In the short story Greasy Lake, T.C.
Boyle introduces a group of male teenagers who go through this rebellious phase as I described above.
Right around the end of this short story, the characters have an epiphany during their experience at
Greasy Lake, which guides their route in life. The short story starts up with the protagonist stating it
was good to be bad. Notice he says was not is when he mentions how cool it must be to be bad. For
me, this part foreshadows the end state of this story. Because we later find out that the protagonist
changes his whole outlook of the lake and past decisions he has made in his life. But before we go into
changing life courses, let s go over being a bad boy. Throughout the story, the main character and his
friends try to imitate what it is like to be a bad boy. They get intoxicated, party, drive recklessly, do ...

Due to the smoking ban in all public work areas that has been in effect since May of 2003, restaurant

Only five months after the Boston ban took place discussions of a statewide ban immediately began,
and as it gets closer to 2004,the state of Massachusetts inches it s way closer to a statewide ban.
The Senate recently joined the House of Representatives in backing the statewide ban. The two
branches of legislature will meet in January to revise a draft of the bill for the statewide ban, which
will most likely pass in early 2004 and take effect July 5, 2004, making Massachusetts the 6th state to
ban smoking statewide. California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, and New York have already passed
similar bans.
Governor Mitt Romney will ultimately decide the state bans fate, yet he has not confirmed which way
he leans on this issue.
Many Boston bar and club owners who opposed a city ban now look forward to the statewide ban in
hopes that clientele will return, but most owners had no problem with the smoking to begin with.
I d rather have smoking be allowed to make the customers happy, said Irish born Milan O Shay, a
bartender at the Flann O Brian s Pub in Mission Hill. But since that won t be happening, a statewide
ban gives less of competitive edge to the other towns in the area that have yet to ban smoking.

influence Islam had on Medieval Italy is Dante Alighieri s, The Divine Comedy. The purpose behind
The Divine Comedy is a source of dissention among scholars exploring the relationship between
medieval Italy and Islam. The obvious purpose seen and discussed about The Divine Comedy is its
representation of the Christian afterlife and a warning to wayward Christians and nonbelievers. The
influence of the Bible is seen specifically in part one and part three of the epic poem: The Inferno and

The idea that Dante s Divine Comedy was a burlesque of Prophet Muhammad s Ascension is another
argument made on the epic poem s primary purpose. Although there are many interpretations of Dante
s Comedies, the epic poems origin can be credited to Dante s eclectic taste and more specifically in his
use of the Mi raj (Prophet Muhammad s Ascension) and the Isra (Nocturnal Journey). This paper will
argue the utilization of the Mi raj and the Isra as the paradigms for the style (descriptive language),
structure, and mysticism in Dante s Inferno and Paradise.
First, as aforementioned there are numerous interpretations of The Divine Comedy but for the purpose
of this paper we will discuss it in two forms: the praising of Islamic influence and the parodying of it,
in order to illustrate the overall influence Islam had on Dante s Divine Comedy. To begin with, Dante

Its operational capacity was severely limited by runway layout; Stapleton had two parallel north south
runways and two additional parallel east west runways that accommodated only commuter air carriers.
Denver s economy grew and expanded greatly in the early 1980s, consequent to booms in the oil, real
estate, and tourism industries. An aging and saturated Stapleton Airport was increasingly seen as a
liability that limited the attractiveness of the region to the many businesses that were flocking to it.
Delays had become chronic. Neither the north south nor east west parallel runways had sufficient
lateral separation to accommodate simultaneous parallel arrival streams during poor weather
conditions when instrument flight rules were in effect. This lack of runway separation and the layout
of Stapleton s taxiways tended to cause delays during high traffic periods, even when weather
conditions were good. Denver s geographic location and the growing size of its population and
commerce made it an attractive location for airline hubbing operations. At one point, Stapleton had
housed four airline hubs, more than any other airport in the United States. In poor weather and during
periods of hightraffic volume, however, its limitations disrupted connection schedules that were
important to maintaining these operations. A local storm could easily congest air traffic across the
entire United States.3 3According to James Barnes [1993], By 1994, Stapleton was one of the top five

Analysis Of The A Pindaric Ode By Thomas Gray
The Bard. A Pindaric Ode by Thomas Gray is a poem which has been carefully constructed to examine
the idea of nationhood. Gray sought to explore the idea that there had been an ancient British state
within the poem s narrative, and the importance of Wales in that ancient nation. He uses several
techniques to try and create a sense of shared history through the poem, despite it being entirely
fictional. In order to give The Bard literary standing, and thus provide an effective platform to
broadcast his views, the poet makes several careful and deliberate choices in the poem s structure and
language to create a sense age and grandeur for the poem. By referring to both to classical Greek
poetry and popular and influential literary pieces, like Milton s Paradise Lost (Gray 20), Gray
manufactures standing for his poem. The full title specifies the poem as a Pindaric Ode . Though this
was not an uncommon form of ode and one which Gray used frequently specifying that The Bard is a
classical style of poem immediately sets the reader up with the understanding that this poem will be
written with the Greek style in mind, and thus gives it an almost classical credibility. Although it was
written before the Romantic period of literature, Gray s use of landscape and nature, ask the reader to
contrast the landscape to the actions of the English army and begs comparisons between physical
nature and human nature. Gray, whilst linking the poem to ancient works and

We Real Cool In this paper the topic that will be written about is the poem entitled We Real Cool .
This poem was written in 1960 by a woman named Gwendolyn Brooks. In this paper three topics have
been selected so that this poem will be able to be analyzed. With each element, it will de discussed
how those elements affected and interested me while reading. The three elements that have been
written about are form, language, and content. Form, in poetry, can be understood as the physical
structure of the poem: the length of the lines, their rhythms, their system of rhymes and repetition (The
Poetry Archive, 2005 2010). Form is the technical word for the look and sound of language
(Kwikguide, 2009). In a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There was a lot of confusion about what the writer was trying to get across. Initially, the thought that
the poem was referring to herself was a bit transparent, so immediately the thought was that it was
supposed to be a tragic poem. However, after listening to the author read the poem, and did more
research, there was complete surprise. The poem was written to come off as a happy and a very
positive poem. As it was mentioned previously, the most interesting part about this poem is the We .
Gwendolyn is a very enjoyable sounding writer. She has a very strong pronunciation and the age in
her voice helps with the passionate sound of the reading. In conclusion, form, content, and language
come together in this literary work to offer a striking emotional response from its reader. Without each
of these specific components, the poem simply wouldn t have the same effect. Form is necessary to
provide structure, content its scene and language its sound and feel. Gwendolyn Brooks has included
each ingredient to provide a brief, but strong feeling one way or another, for the young people of this
poem.

Hurricane Katrina Case Study
1. Did human activity contribute to the severity of the storm, or was it an entirely natural disaster?
Support your answer with evidence and citations. The severity of Hurricane Katrina was impacted
largely by the location of its landfall. The storm was well tracked by the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The NOAA noted that the high pressure of the storm at
landfall, the strength of the system and shallow waters offshore all were contributing factors to the
severity of the storm. (Graumann, Houston, Lawrimore, Levinson, Lott, McCown, Stephens, Wuertz:
2005, pg 4). When the storm struck, however, it was found that those who were financially better off
were able to evacuate easier, leaving those in lower income areas to remain amidst the devastation.
Nearly a half million people were excluded from the cities, when FEMA camps were implemented as
a means to reconstruct public housing. (Smith, 2006). The human activity leading up to the storm,
including levees constructed on the shore as well as the NOAA announcement of a hurricane warning,
had been intended to protect the residents of Louisiana and Mississippi. Unfortunately, efforts to
prepare those who would be most devastated by the storm failed. The governmental response in the
wake of the storm greatly worsened the devastation of the storm. What is called glory seeking was the
government s way of encouraging the private sector to get involved with disaster relief. However, the

seems hard to have to pay for just a rug will be a cheap price for him to stop forever and always from

The Social and Cultural Life of Americans during the Cold War
The threat of nuclear war in the 1950 s was real and was one that was on the mind nearly every person
in both the United States and the United Kingdom. After the end of the Second World War the world
can be seen to be split into two sides, the East and the West, Communism and Democracy. After the
Second World War the Soviet Union became paranoid with the West as well as the United States
become paranoid of the Communist East, and after the Soviets had made their first nuclear bomb this
created massive friction between the NATO alliance and the Soviet Union and the eastern bloc. Only
after the soviet union had obtained the hydrogen bomb and began to stockpile nuclear warheads in the
1950 s did the real fear of nuclear annihilation begin to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This sense of paranoia that can also be accredited to the culture or nuclear preparedness. Families
were advised to build fallout shelters and in schools children were told to duck and cover in the case
of nuclear disaster. This sense that nuclear annihilation could happen at any moment was well
established in American culture. However in Britain the fear on the bomb can be seen as lesser than
that of the USA. As Peter Hennessy expresses in his book Having it so good, Britain in the fifties The
wider, personal implications of the bomb perhaps burnt their way into the collective British psyche
more slowly than might have been expected 3. Towards the beginning of the nuclear arms race, a lot
of information was not disclosed to the public, such as the amount if casualties caused if the Soviet
Union dropped bombs on Britain which was around 1,378,000 people, and the size of the bombs used
was around 1.6 megatons of TNT. Although there were some civil defence films that tried to paint a
picture of nuclear war none of them captured the threat of war and many films trivialised it as Spencer
R. Weart writes the stage was dominated by tales of mutant tribes and so forth 4 this caused many
people to downplay the threat of nuclear war due to the lack of decent portrayal of nuclear war, Weart
writes Nearly three decades passed without any technically

Theme Of Marriage By Gregory Corso Marriage
What causes people to contemplate marriage? Many would like to believe the answer is love, but that
is not always the case. People who think of an ideal marriage would think of two people loving each
other and sharing a personal bond or goals together. Marriage is usually defined as the legally or
formally recognized union of two lovers as partners in a personal relationship. This suggests there is
an actual connection between two people in marriage, but do people actually consider this when
committing to love and support their partners forever? As research and studies have shown, people
ultimately get married for the incorrect reasons, in which love is not included or even a part of. This
philosophy can be easily applied to the short poem, Marriage by Gregory Corso. In this emotional
poem, the author argues marriage is more effectively understood or known for culture and
convenience rather than through the abstract considerations of love. Corso finds himself confused
multiple times, wondering if he should marry to not be lonely, for tradition and for his physical and
mental health. He disregards love, a relationship or a connection with his future wife. The author
ponders the decision weighing the options. He highlights which ones are the right and which ones are
the incorrect reasons, according to his opinion. General ways of convenience like coping with
loneliness, health and economic status, and navigating cultural stereotypes and religion are often the

The Importance Of Luke s Unique Material For His...
We are enjoying the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. Not a few people regard this as a good
opportunity to reconsider the meaning of the divine mercy, and make discussions all over the world.
Among them, especially, understanding the Gospel of Luke, which is known as Gospel of mercy , is
vital. Hence, it is meaningful for us to explore some parts of pericope from Lukan text. In this essay,
the importance of Luke s unique material for his representation of the mission and ministry of Jesus
shall be discussed in further detail.
Luke tries to the character of Jesus in this pericope. This is made remarkable by Peter s utterance:
master (Lk 5:5) and Lord (Lk 5:8) . Before and in the beginning of this pericope, Jesus is showed as
one who teaches the good news of the kingdom of God. (Lk 4:43) In that sense, it is natural to call him
master (Lk 5:5) However, after the miracle of a good catch of fish, he calls him Lord . (Lk 5:8) In
general, the word Lord is used as a form of polite address . Rowe also explains:
It is well known that New Testament scholars often take the vocative form of Kyrios to be something
polite or respectful address ( Sir or milord ).
However, as Rowe also set out that many scholars are not convinced this interpretation, it is
reasonable that this difference was made for Christological reason. Firstly, Luke shows Jesus divinity
in Peter s falling down at Jesus knee, which is a common body language in front of the divinity to
show the

Asian Community in Modern Day Media
Did you ever really notice how Asians are really been portrayed within modern day media? As a
fellow Asian American. I have noticed that the media displays the Asian community in only one way,
the foreign genius who excels everything, like kung fu and math. You never really ever get to see a
main character, who is a independent, courageous Asian that doesn t know kung fu , in any movie or
TV shows. Many actors in modern day media prove these stereotypes to be true such as; beloved actor
Ken Jeong, Jackie Chan, James Hong, Lucy Liu, and John Cho. First off, to help prove my point is
,America s favorite comedic actor, Ken Jeong. You never see Ken Jeong ever play as a main character
of any movie. Ken Jeong usually plays as the random minor roll foriegn asian guy who is there to
make people laugh. Think about it, in The Hangover Ken plays a foreign asian mobster, in Community
Ken plays a know it all Korean spanish teacher, even in Knocked up he stereotypes the Asian job as a
doctor that got there because he is Asian. Ken is only the first person amongst the multiple examples.
Secondly, Jackie Chan is another actor in which they only play a stereotyped Asian. Sure Jackie Chan
play as the main character in a lot of movies, but is stereotyped a lot. In many of his movies he has a
particular Asian accent and knows kung fu that is mocked a lot. In movies like; Rush Hour Jackie
Chan plays a cop who somehow knows kung fu and every time he says Carter it sounds like he says

Grease Movie Analysis
I watched the film Grease which was directed by Randal Kleiser. This film took place at Rydell High
which was full of fun, crazy students. In the beginning, Sandy Dumbrowski who was the new girl in
school arrives at school. She explains how over the summer she and a boy named Danny Zuko had a
brief love affair. However, it turns out he is a leader of a greaser gang, the T Birds. Sandy tells her new
classmates about how sweet Danny was and how he was different from other boys, but she doesn t
know that he lies and make stories up about their relationship to his friends. From watching the film,
you can easily tell that the kids at Rydell High have to deal with many issues. Some of the issues
would be having relationship issues, teen pregnancy, dropping out of school, and friendship problems.
In the end, Sandy and Danny compromise their differences with each other and their friends and end
up being together and being happy. The medium of performance is film and the production company
of this film was RSO Records. In the film, there were many restored behaviors. Some of the restored
behaviors that I could identify were the characters going to school, gossiping, and having sex. Every
action that the characters did was a restored behavior because their actions were things that many high
school students do everyday. Another example of a restored behavior in the film could be when Danny
and Sandy went on a date and they ate at the diner. Eating is an action that is done by

Gerald Sandusky Case
After reviewing serval sources related to this case, it is clear that this was an ongoing issue for many
years and the scope may extend into the 1970 s if new allegations are corroborated.
The case officially begins on November 4, 2011 when the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania filed charges against Gerald Sandusky (Sandusky) that included multiple counts of
aggravated indecent assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, corruption of minors, unlawful
contact with minors, and endangering the welfare of minors. Several of the charges cover offenses that
occurred between 1998 and 2002 when Sandusky was either the Defensive Coordinator for the Penn
State University (PSU) football team or as a professor Emeritus with unrestricted access to the football
program s facilities (Freeh, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In November of 2012, then president of PSU was indicted for grand jury perjury, obstruction of
justice, child endangerment, failure to report child abuse and conspiracy in connection with the
scandal (Sokolove, 2014). Then Coach Joe Paterno was not charged in relation to the Sandusky
scandal, however, he died of cancer shortly after Sandusky s arrest and his firing from PSU.
Aside from the allegations of child sexual abuse, the revelation of a cover up and who actually knew
of Sandusky s behavior appears to be just as shocking. Through independent and Grand Jury
investigations, a small circle of the most powerful people at PSU knew, for almost a decade, of
Sandusky s behavior and chose not to take appropriate actions to protect children from a sexual
predator and concealed Sandusky s behavior from the University s Board of Trustees, the community

  • 2. Swimming Biomechanics If you woke up breathing, congratulations! You have another chance. ~Andrea Boydston I began swimming at the age of 4 and I was fortunate to earn a college swimming scholarship at Purdue University. At Purdue, I was a good swimmer and really worked hard each and every day. However, my at the time girlfriend (and current wife, also a swimmer) always said I looked like a recreational swimmer! She made this comment as I wore old school foam goggles and my head moved all around during freestyle. Needless to say, my breathing biomechanics were far from ideal, despite being on a collegiate swimming scholarship! Breathing is a simplistically complex task. Everyone can breathe, but the mechanics are complicated. Unfortunately, in swimming this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, this information isn t ground breaking. Yet, if one is anxious or stressed, they ll begin taking short, shallow breaths. This short, shallow breathing is highly damaging to swimming performance, as it will increase your breathing frequency and fatigue of the inspiratory muscles. Moreover, you ll constantly feel out of breath and tired with this fast and shallow breathing pattern. Tip: If you can t stay relaxed, hold you breath for 3 seconds underwater, then exhale directly before your next breath. Lifting the head or armpit breathing are two common swimming flaws during the freestyle breathing motion. These motions greatly impede the swimming stroke as they create more drag. Recently, Formosa (2014) researched breathing and drag in elite male and female swimmers. The male participants demonstrated that the breathing action caused a greater (26 %) net drag force compared to the females (16 %). To further understand the influence of breathing on swimming technique, each stroke was analyzed and comparisons were made between the breathing and non breathing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Application Of Porter s Five Model On Michael Kors 3. Application of Porter s Five Model on Michael Kors Four forces that affect Michael Kors Porter s five model is defined as the framework that evaluate the position of a company in the external environment with focus drawn on the level of competitiveness (Roy 2011). The framework considers factors such as rivalry, substitute goods, the power of suppliers and buyers as well as new entrants. Four forces can influence the success of Michael Kors. The first one is competitive rivalry. Here, the struggle is about maintaining performance despite different tactics used by different companies to increase sales. For instance, Ralph Lauren uses premium prices for quality products to differentiate itself, while Coach uses product variety within the line of handbags to remain competitive (Stewart 2016). Also, when the industry is flooded with similar companies producing similar merchandise, the probability of a company stagnating is high because consumers have a variety to pick from. Hence, the need to establish loyal customers. Michael Kors is also facing the threat of new entrants. McClatchey and Murray (2011) observe that most talented designers working for big labels such as Stella McCartney and Gucci typically go on to create their own labels increasing the intensity of the competition. However, the newer labels take time before amassing a followership and loyal customers because of capital constraints, lack of experience, and retaliation by established brands. Bargaining power ... • 14. Adapting to a Long Term Care Facility Essay The character Dorothy said in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, there is no place like home (Baum, 1960, p. 45). Sadly, many of our elderly live in Long Term Care Facilities (LTCF). The transition from living in their own homes, to living in a LTCF, can be a traumatic experience. Poor adaptation to a LTCF may cause depression, malnutrition and significantly reduce the lifespan of the elder. Thus, it is imperative, that nurse s recognize this promptly. According to Agnes and Guralnik (2008) adaptation is a gradual change in behavior to conform to the prevailing cultural pattern (p. 15). When elders are placed in a LTCF, whether it be voluntarily or involuntarily, they must give up certain liberties that are taken for granted. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 160). She goes on to say that adaptation to a LTCF is the process by which someone copes with the transition into the life of being a LTCF client (p.159). How the elders view their situation also plays a major role on their adaptation to the LTCF. When someone views the environment in an absolute negative way, they are going to struggle to become adapted. On the other hand, if they look at the positives of the environment they may adapt more appropriately. According to Sister Callista Roy s theory, adaptation is the process and outcome of individuals and groups, who use conscious awareness, self reflection and choice to create human and environmental integration (Bergland and Kirkevold, 2006, p.686). This theory lends to adaptation of living in a LTCF by examining a key issue, the elders choice. With personal experience in this matter, it seems as if elders who make the decision of moving into a LTCF better adapt to the environment. In my opinion, a lot of how elders adapt to living in a LTCF depends on the choices they make. If they sit around, and think poor pitiful me, they will have a much harder time adapting to their new environment. If the elder becomes engaged in their new environment, they will adapt more efficiently. As Parker (2013) mentioned, she stays heavily involved in activities that the LTCF provides, but also performs a multitude of other activities in her apartment ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This painting is standing approximately twelve feet tall. It was created in the fourteenth century between the early years of 1305 1306 in the South Wall of Scrovegni, Chapel in Padua, Italy. The materials Giotto di Bondone used were called fresco painting. Fresco is Italian for the word French According to ArtLex it is A method of painting on plaster, either dry (dry fresco or fresco secco) or wet (wet or true fresco). In the latter method, pigments are applied to thin layers of wet plaster so that they will be absorbed and the painting becomes part of the wall . 2. With these colors the shadows are brought out to make this painting look natural. As I mentioned before the setting is a bit dark and Bondone uses a certain balance between what the people are wearing and the outside frame. The most important element I seen was the lines. When Judas is kissing Jesus you can see the torches creating a certain line focusing on their faces of this kiss. The second thing I notice is the space in this painting. The ideal image of nuclear family used to be described as a male husband, a female wife and their kids; however, in few decades, the term family has become diverse without any blood related relationships. • 23. Frankenstein Cruelty Analysis Everyday, we hear stories of theft, abuse, and murder. Instantly, we judge the perpetrators. However, why do some people commit these crimes? What causes them to take this path? Are they just inherently bad, or are their actions influenced from external factors around them? Mary Shelley s Frankenstein explores this interesting notion of tabula rasa the idea that babies are born with a blank slate, suggesting that humans are not just pre packaged with certain behaviours or prejudices. Rather, it is learned. People are born pure and compelled to do evil at the feet of exclusion, isolation or abuse, just like Frankenstein and/or the monster . In this sense, acts of cruelty in Frankenstein show that every one of us is capable of taking this heinous route of personal and projected destruction with the absence of companionship. However, there are always intrinsic motivations or characteristics revealed about the perpetrator/victim during these violent events. Thus, with further inspection of both Frankenstein and his creation s acts of cruelty, the reader is exposed to their insecurities, perspective on women, and dire vengefulness. Violent and cruel acts are usually done to display power or dominance. Yet, in Frankenstein, they can be counterproductive and reveal insecurities or buried fears instead. The earliest example of cruelty is when Frankenstein essentially abandons his child right after creating it: ...I beheld the wretch ― the miserable monster whom I had ... • 24. American Plantation Social Classes Social classes have existed throughout all of history. The categorizing of slaves on American Plantations is often overlooked, but there were in fact many levels of slave classes. The use of a class system helped plantation owners to punish and reward their slaves as well as to keep their business organized. The lowest class of slaves was those who did field labor. They had the poorest food, housing, and clothes. These bad conditions motivated them to work harder to earn better positions. The second class of slaves was the boatmen and the cooks. They had slightly better food, clothing, and housing than the field labors. Their fear being debunked back to the field labor prevented them from disobeying. • 26. Sigmund Freud And Freud s Theory Of The Unconscious Mind... A twenty one year old woman by the name of Anna O that was caring for her ailing father began to experience severe debilitating physical and psychological symptoms. During this period, most psychoses were labeled as hysteria. Anna O began to hallucinate, experience paralysis, and have an extreme aversion to food and drink. She underwent treatment with Dr. Breuer (Oxford Journals, 2005). When Dr. Breuer treated Anna O for her hysteria and her mental and physical symptoms he discovered that as she began to talk of hidden thought processes about her experiences during their discussions, whether through hypnosis or while conscious, certain symptoms would disappear (Oxford Journals, 2005). Dr. Breuer discussed Anna O s case with Sigmund Freud and Freud later perfected this talking cure. Also known as sweeping the chimney or sweeping the mind. Sigmund Freud s theory of the unconscious mind claimed that people experience hysteria or other reactions in response to repressed experiences. The unconscious contains all those drives, urges, or instincts that are beyond our awareness but that nevertheless motivate most of our words, feelings, and actions (Feist Feist, 2008). Freud and his theory are responsible for the birth of what is known today as psychoanalysis and Freud is considered the founding father of psychoanalysis. • 27. Reflection On The Restroom Today s experience at my site base was much different than on Monday. I came at the very beginning of the school day, so that I could observe the procedures that Mrs. Wright uses when the students arrive to school. Furthermore, I was able to participate more frequently during this observation than the previous one, which I appreciated because I was able to get to know the students better. One aspect of today s class that I felt worked really well was Mrs. Wright s morning routine. She welcomes the students into the classroom and asks them to use the restroom. If the restroom is full, she allows the students to go directly to the carpet where they can play with toys, such as blocks, magnetic blocks/shapes, and Lego fences. Mrs. Wright kept mental note of students who went to the bathroom and those who did not. Personally, I think it would be easier to have a checklist with ever student s names on it, and place a check mark next to the student s name after they use the restroom. This would ensure that all students go and would avoid accidents. It was very evident that the students were used to this routine because they were aware of what they should have been doing. Naturally, there were students who did not want to use the restroom, so watching how the teacher and her aids addressed these challenges. Again, I disagree with the way that they handled these situations, they would grab the student by the arm and drag them to the bathroom. This is very dangerous and not professional in any way. Nevertheless, this only occurred twice in the morning. Another aspect of the day that I thought went amazingly well was the cutting activity that Mrs. Wright had the students participate in. She had created trolls for each student out of toilet paper rolls and she had glued pieces of construction paper inside the toilet paper roll. The students were then asked to use scissors to cut the construction paper hair off their trolls. The best part about this activity was that Mrs. Wright and Mrs. Foster were keeping anecdotal notes of how the students were holding the scissors, which hand they were using to cut, and if they were actually cutting the paper or just ripping it. This was amazing for me to see because it allowed me ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Organizational culture refers to the beliefs and values that exist in an organization and to the beliefs of the staff and the foreseen value of their work that will influence their work ethic. Schein (1992, 2004) defines the culture of a group or organization as shared assumptions and beliefs about the world and their place in it, the nature of time and space, human nature, and human relationships. (pg. 326) On the other hand, leadership provides the vision and helps the organization move in the direction to accomplish the best or the organization and the employees. It is important to understand the relationship between organizational culture and leadership and how they influence each other. Yukl states that by changing the culture of an organization, top management can indirectly influence the motivation and behavior of organization members. Research on organizational culture provides further insight into the dynamics of transformational leadership and the processes by which a leader s charisma may become institutionalized. It originally started with the African slaves who combined their West African traditions and beliefs with Catholicism. To many Voodoo has been seen as cult and something that begets fear. If one were to look up the definition of Voodoo it would be defined as an African religious cult practiced in the Caribbean and later in the Unites States, which involves animism, sorcery, religious rituals and spirit possession. An aging and saturated Stapleton Airport was increasingly seen as a liability that limited the attractiveness of the region to the many businesses that were flocking to it. Delays had become chronic. Neither the north south nor east west parallel runways had sufficient lateral separation to accommodate simultaneous parallel arrival streams during poor weather conditions when instrument flight rules were in effect. Gray sought to explore the idea that there had been an ancient British state within the poem s narrative, and the importance of Wales in that ancient nation. He uses several techniques to try and create a sense of shared history through the poem, despite it being entirely fictional. In order to give The Bard literary standing, and thus provide an effective platform to broadcast his views, the poet makes several careful and deliberate choices in the poem s structure and language to create a sense age and grandeur for the poem. By referring to both to classical Greek poetry and popular and influential literary pieces, like Milton s Paradise Lost (Gray 20), Gray manufactures standing for his poem. The full title specifies the poem as a Pindaric Ode . Though this was not an uncommon form of ode and one which Gray used frequently specifying that The Bard is a classical style of poem immediately sets the reader up with the understanding that this poem will be written with the Greek style in mind, and thus gives it an almost classical credibility. • 41. Hurricane Katrina Case Study 1. Did human activity contribute to the severity of the storm, or was it an entirely natural disaster? Support your answer with evidence and citations. The severity of Hurricane Katrina was impacted largely by the location of its landfall. The storm was well tracked by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The NOAA noted that the high pressure of the storm at landfall, the strength of the system and shallow waters offshore all were contributing factors to the severity of the storm. (Graumann, Houston, Lawrimore, Levinson, Lott, McCown, Stephens, Wuertz: 2005, pg 4). When the storm struck, however, it was found that those who were financially better off were able to evacuate easier, leaving those in lower income areas to remain amidst the devastation. Nearly a half million people were excluded from the cities, when FEMA camps were implemented as a means to reconstruct public housing. (Smith, 2006). The human activity leading up to the storm, including levees constructed on the shore as well as the NOAA announcement of a hurricane warning, had been intended to protect the residents of Louisiana and Mississippi. Unfortunately, efforts to prepare those who would be most devastated by the storm failed. The governmental response in the wake of the storm greatly worsened the devastation of the storm. • 43. The Social and Cultural Life of Americans during the Cold War The threat of nuclear war in the 1950 s was real and was one that was on the mind nearly every person in both the United States and the United Kingdom. After the end of the Second World War the world can be seen to be split into two sides, the East and the West, Communism and Democracy. After the Second World War the Soviet Union became paranoid with the West as well as the United States become paranoid of the Communist East, and after the Soviets had made their first nuclear bomb this created massive friction between the NATO alliance and the Soviet Union and the eastern bloc. Only after the soviet union had obtained the hydrogen bomb and began to stockpile nuclear warheads in the 1950 s did the real fear of nuclear annihilation begin to ... Families were advised to build fallout shelters and in schools children were told to duck and cover in the case of nuclear disaster. This sense that nuclear annihilation could happen at any moment was well established in American culture. However in Britain the fear on the bomb can be seen as lesser than that of the USA. As Peter Hennessy expresses in his book Having it so good, Britain in the fifties The wider, personal implications of the bomb perhaps burnt their way into the collective British psyche more slowly than might have been expected 3. Towards the beginning of the nuclear arms race, a lot of information was not disclosed to the public, such as the amount if casualties caused if the Soviet Union dropped bombs on Britain which was around 1,378,000 people, and the size of the bombs used was around 1.6 megatons of TNT. Although there were some civil defence films that tried to paint a picture of nuclear war none of them captured the threat of war and many films trivialised it as Spencer R. Weart writes the stage was dominated by tales of mutant tribes and so forth 4 this caused many people to downplay the threat of nuclear war due to the lack of decent portrayal of nuclear war, Weart writes Nearly three decades passed without any technically ... • 45. Theme Of Marriage By Gregory Corso Marriage What causes people to contemplate marriage? Many would like to believe the answer is love, but that is not always the case. People who think of an ideal marriage would think of two people loving each other and sharing a personal bond or goals together. Marriage is usually defined as the legally or formally recognized union of two lovers as partners in a personal relationship. This suggests there is an actual connection between two people in marriage, but do people actually consider this when committing to love and support their partners forever? As research and studies have shown, people ultimately get married for the incorrect reasons, in which love is not included or even a part of. This philosophy can be easily applied to the short poem, Marriage by Gregory Corso. In this emotional poem, the author argues marriage is more effectively understood or known for culture and convenience rather than through the abstract considerations of love. Corso finds himself confused multiple times, wondering if he should marry to not be lonely, for tradition and for his physical and mental health. He disregards love, a relationship or a connection with his future wife. The author ponders the decision weighing the options. He highlights which ones are the right and which ones are the incorrect reasons, according to his opinion. General ways of convenience like coping with loneliness, health and economic status, and navigating cultural stereotypes and religion are often the true ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. The Importance Of Luke s Unique Material For His... We are enjoying the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. Not a few people regard this as a good opportunity to reconsider the meaning of the divine mercy, and make discussions all over the world. Among them, especially, understanding the Gospel of Luke, which is known as Gospel of mercy , is vital. Hence, it is meaningful for us to explore some parts of pericope from Lukan text. In this essay, the importance of Luke s unique material for his representation of the mission and ministry of Jesus shall be discussed in further detail. Luke tries to the character of Jesus in this pericope. This is made remarkable by Peter s utterance: master (Lk 5:5) and Lord (Lk 5:8) . Before and in the beginning of this pericope, Jesus is showed as one who teaches the good news of the kingdom of God. (Lk 4:43) In that sense, it is natural to call him master (Lk 5:5) However, after the miracle of a good catch of fish, he calls him Lord . (Lk 5:8) In general, the word Lord is used as a form of polite address . Rowe also explains: It is well known that New Testament scholars often take the vocative form of Kyrios to be something polite or respectful address ( Sir or milord ). However, as Rowe also set out that many scholars are not convinced this interpretation, it is reasonable that this difference was made for Christological reason. Firstly, Luke shows Jesus divinity in Peter s falling down at Jesus knee, which is a common body language in front of the divinity to show the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Asian Community in Modern Day Media Did you ever really notice how Asians are really been portrayed within modern day media? As a fellow Asian American. I have noticed that the media displays the Asian community in only one way, the foreign genius who excels everything, like kung fu and math. You never really ever get to see a main character, who is a independent, courageous Asian that doesn t know kung fu , in any movie or TV shows. Many actors in modern day media prove these stereotypes to be true such as; beloved actor Ken Jeong, Jackie Chan, James Hong, Lucy Liu, and John Cho. First off, to help prove my point is ,America s favorite comedic actor, Ken Jeong. You never see Ken Jeong ever play as a main character of any movie. Ken Jeong usually plays as the random minor roll foriegn asian guy who is there to make people laugh. Think about it, in The Hangover Ken plays a foreign asian mobster, in Community Ken plays a know it all Korean spanish teacher, even in Knocked up he stereotypes the Asian job as a doctor that got there because he is Asian. Ken is only the first person amongst the multiple examples. Secondly, Jackie Chan is another actor in which they only play a stereotyped Asian. Sure Jackie Chan play as the main character in a lot of movies, but is stereotyped a lot. In many of his movies he has a particular Asian accent and knows kung fu that is mocked a lot. In movies like; Rush Hour Jackie Chan plays a cop who somehow knows kung fu and every time he says Carter it sounds like he says ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. Grease Movie Analysis I watched the film Grease which was directed by Randal Kleiser. This film took place at Rydell High which was full of fun, crazy students. In the beginning, Sandy Dumbrowski who was the new girl in school arrives at school. She explains how over the summer she and a boy named Danny Zuko had a brief love affair. However, it turns out he is a leader of a greaser gang, the T Birds. Sandy tells her new classmates about how sweet Danny was and how he was different from other boys, but she doesn t know that he lies and make stories up about their relationship to his friends. From watching the film, you can easily tell that the kids at Rydell High have to deal with many issues. Some of the issues would be having relationship issues, teen pregnancy, dropping out of school, and friendship problems. In the end, Sandy and Danny compromise their differences with each other and their friends and end up being together and being happy. The medium of performance is film and the production company of this film was RSO Records. In the film, there were many restored behaviors. Some of the restored behaviors that I could identify were the characters going to school, gossiping, and having sex. Every action that the characters did was a restored behavior because their actions were things that many high school students do everyday. Another example of a restored behavior in the film could be when Danny and Sandy went on a date and they ate at the diner. Eating is an action that is done by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 50. Gerald Sandusky Case After reviewing serval sources related to this case, it is clear that this was an ongoing issue for many years and the scope may extend into the 1970 s if new allegations are corroborated. The case officially begins on November 4, 2011 when the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania filed charges against Gerald Sandusky (Sandusky) that included multiple counts of aggravated indecent assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, corruption of minors, unlawful contact with minors, and endangering the welfare of minors. Several of the charges cover offenses that occurred between 1998 and 2002 when Sandusky was either the Defensive Coordinator for the Penn State University (PSU) football team or as a professor Emeritus with unrestricted access to the football program s facilities (Freeh, ... Then Coach Joe Paterno was not charged in relation to the Sandusky scandal, however, he died of cancer shortly after Sandusky s arrest and his firing from PSU. Aside from the allegations of child sexual abuse, the revelation of a cover up and who actually knew of Sandusky s behavior appears to be just as shocking. Through independent and Grand Jury investigations, a small circle of the most powerful people at PSU knew, for almost a decade, of Sandusky s behavior and chose not to take appropriate actions to protect children from a sexual predator and concealed Sandusky s behavior from the University s Board of Trustees, the community and ...
