The Stanford Prison Experiment And Philip G Zimbardo
In chapter two, we study the research methods of different psychological experiments and studies.
This includes the ethical obligations of researchers toward the participants in their research, which are
enforced by institutional review boards at American research colleges and universities. In these
studies, researchers are required to provide the following: (a) informed consent of the purpose of the
research, its expected duration, and any potential risks, discomfort, or adverse associated with it ; (b)
protection for harm and discomfort; (c) knowledge of deception in a study and debriefing once the
study has concluded. These obligations are required to protect research participants. However, these
are not always followed in research. In the 2015 movie, The Stanford Prison Experiment , audiences
are shown a reenactment of the notorious true story. In August of 1971, psychologist, Philip G.
Zimbardo, at Stanford University was interested on the psychological effect that prison s have on
human behavior. Therefore, Zimbardo put an ad in the newspaper reading, Male college students

However, this was not before the guards already showed major problems with throwing authority
around by hitting a prisoner . On the second day of the experiment, prisoners rebelled against the
guards which provoked the guards to put a rewards and punishment system into place, which turned
into a hunger for power. This power hungry alliance of guards forced three prisoners to be released
from the experiment for traumatic experiences by day four. As the experiment continued, the guards
only became more tyrannical while the prisoners become more unhinged. This forced Dr. Zimbardo to
finally discontinue the experiment after day

Over the course over the summer, I completed 125 hours of volunteer work with the Street Team for
the sport athletic market department here at North Carolina State University. Throughout the summer,
the summer interns put together a master list of different events throughout the community and
university for the other volunteers and me to attend. Each month I would be scheduled to attend
different events in which I would promote NC State athletics. It was required that I arrived 30 minutes
to an hour prior of start time to set up what was needed for occasion. There was a checklist created to
make sure that I had everything that was needed to run a successful event. Mainly, the objective was
to promote NC State athletics by handing out and distributing giveaways and apparel. Usually there

new students to prepare themselves for the transition to what would be their new homes for however
many years that was needed for them to graduate. I enjoyed answering questions pertaining to the
game day process and how to request tickets. Many of the new students didn t understand the

Resilience Model
The second component of PsyCap is optimism. Optimistic individuals expect positive outcomes
regardless of their capabilities (You, 2016). When these individuals experience success, they attribute
it to internal and stable processes (You, 2016). In contrast, they attribute failure to temporary, external
and unstable processes (You, 2016). Even after encountering failure, they remain motivated and move
forward with positive expectations (Gurol Kerimgil, 2010; You, 2016). In this regard, to help cope
with my situation, I could have tried to have a more positive approach towards my failure. When I

Like me, one may have faced many barriers to academic success such as work overload and role
ambiguity. These barriers can cause stress which may result in both positive and negative outcomes.
However, PsyCap is one way to cope with these stressors and their negative effects. PsyCap fosters
psychological, physical and mental strength to promote learning and overcome the barriers to success
(Quinones et al., 2017; You, 2016). The current essay described my stress experience and its positive
and negative outcomes. Furthermore, the essay illustrated how the variables of PsyCap could have

What is communication? We often define communication as the act of talking to one another via
different platforms, be it face to face, via emails or even through videos. Through this act, we are
trying to pass a message or relate something to the intended audience. We face this every day in our
lives, even if we do not leave the house and talk to anyone. For example, even reading a cooking
recipe is counted as a form of communication. It is a form of communication between the reader and
the writer. The reader is trying to comprehend and follow the steps given by the writer whereas the
writer would be writing in a form whereby the steps is simple yet precise. So here are some
advantages and disadvantages of ineffective communication. For advantages, ... Show more content

Many people would know of this unfortunate incident, but not many would know that it was probably
the cause of an ineffective communication. The incident goes as follows, In July of 1945, the allied
leaders had a meeting in Potsdam and they submitted a stiffly worded declaration of surrender terms
to the Japanese. These terms had included a statement to the effect that any negative answer would
invite prompt and utter destruction. The allied leaders (Harry S Truman, Winston Churchill and Stalin)
also stated that they hoped that Japan would agree to surrender unconditionally and prevent
devastation of the Japanese homeland and that they patiently awaited Japan s answer. This was known
as the Potsdam Declaration. The Japanese Premier at that time, Kantaro Suzuki answered using the
Japanese word mokusatsu , which is derived from the word for silence . Yet, this word had a second
meaning which also means not worthy of comment . In the heat of the moment, the meaning was
thought to be the second one, which may be true as the Japanese were very prideful, as we can see

Genghis Kh History, Warriors, And Tradition
Mongolia is a country rich in history, warriors, and tradition. They have endured the most drastic
changes since the birth of the nation in the twelfth century. From nomadic tribal clans to a nation
united, Mongolia is a shining example of how a governmental democracy can advance a nation
tenfold. Prior to the year 1206, Mongolia was a nation of warring clans; a nation separated by beliefs
and ideals. In 1162, a man by the name of Temujin was born who would change a nation and leave
one of the most prominent reputations in war history. He would, after twenty two years of tribal war,
unite the tribes of Mongolia and become known as Genghis Khan. He was one of the most influential

With all of these things our world would start to die by the minute and that s exactly what happened in

Why did the creators of the movie base it like this? Could it actually be because they think all of this

The Similarities Between Mars And Mars
Mars, the red planet, and fourth planet from the sun. What is Mars really like, is it cold or hot, wet or
dry? Can humans live on Mars, and if so how? For decades scientists have been studying Mars, they
have been using rovers and from there they collected data, samples, and took pictures. These rovers
study Mars atmosphere, temperatures, weather, if it has water, and a lot more. With all of the data the
scientists have gathered we know that Mars atmosphere is a lot different than our, yet still has
similarities.
Even though Earth and Mars are in the same solar system and orbit the same sun, Mars atmosphere
and the planet itself is a lot different from Earth. Mars is 142 million miles away from the sun, with a
year being 687 days long. It is about half of Earth s size, and is one tenth of Earth s mass. Mars
atmosphere is carbon based, containing 95.3% carbon dioxide, and also it only has .3% water vapor
(Source for %). The average temperature on Mars is 81 degrees Fahrenheit which is approximately 62
degrees Celsius (NASA). Mars atmosphere is also very thin, so it does not allow liquid water to exist
at the surface for long (Newsela). Also Mars has a lot less gravity, Earth has 62.5% more gravity than
Mars does (NASA). Mars environment would not be very hospitable for human life.
Earth also differs a lot from Mars, Earth is 78.1% nitrogen, and 20.9% oxygen, and isn t carbon based
(Source for %). While Mars only is only .3% water vapor, Earth is 1 4%

INTRODUCTION
When we walk through the halls of a modern office building, unless there are underlying
psychological issues, few wonder if today will be the day the building collapses. Few people question
if the floor is strong enough for their weight, if the wind will blow over the structure, or if there are
enough exits to safely get out of the structure in an emergency. Why is it that all over the world, for
the most part, buildings are relatively similar? Why is it that people don t question the structural
intergrity of a facility every time they enter? The answer is standardized construction through the
incorporation of Building Codes. Over thousands of years the process of regulating construction has
become so engrained into society that few today question the integrity of their office building,
highways, or homes.

My Career Of Pharmacy
As a child, when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up I always spouted out that I wanted to be a
doctor and help people. Now as an adult, those goals have shifted, but not very far from their origin. I
want to help people the way I witnessed my father doing as a firefighter growing up. I want to be a
role model to other children especially as a first generation person going to college. Educationally,
math and science were always listed under the favorite subject category on worksheets and surveys.
Professionally, I have always worked with the public and always thoroughly enjoyed doing so. I am an
outgoing, friendly person who enjoys talking to others and connecting with people daily. Overall, I
believe my personal, educational, and professional life have led me to my career goals of becoming a
Doctor of Pharmacy and helping people in a field in which I am passionate.
My father has always taught me that you help others in any way you can, no matter the sacrifice. He
also instilled in me to be grateful that I am fortunate enough to have the ability to help others. These
values were taught to him by his father who was a veteran of the Army and through his career as a
firefighter. I can never thank him enough for instilling these values in me as a child and helping to
shape me into the person I am today. These values are what led me to the decision to pursue pharmacy
and my ultimate goal of becoming a Doctor of Pharmacy. The field of pharmacy that interests me most

Strength Of Women In The Bean Trees
The strength of the female population is constantly increasing. Women are gaining the courage to be
stronger and more independent. Women are proving that they are just as strong as men, they are
becoming CEO s and running for president. Barbara Kingsolver wrote these three main supporting
characters going through difficult events, but making it through them with the strength they have as
single females. The female strength in these three women is one of the main themes in the book The
Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver.
In the book Mattie is definitely a strong character. When Taylor meets Mattie she is surprised. Back in

Strength is really hard to obtain with a lack of confidence. Lou Ann is upset with herself so Taylor
tries to make her feel better, If you say one more word about being fat I m going to stick my fingers in
my ears and sing Blue Bayou until you re done (135). Taylor is a bigger support for Lou Ann than
Angel could ever be. Even if what Taylor does isn t the most supportive, just being there for someone
is really all that s needed. When Esperanza tries to kill herself, Taylor sits with her. She doesn t do
much but just being there is enough support for Esperanza. Taylor just has to be there with intentions
to support and it would make all the difference. Support isn t just comforting by speaking to them, but
also being there to help in a time of need. Taylor takes Esperanza and Estevan to Oklahoma, to go to
the Cherokee nation. That s the most helpful and supportive thing Taylor could do for them. One of
the main personality traits from Taylor is the empowerment she gives to others and the strength she
shows
The females in The Bean Trees are so strong and that s a main theme that Barbara Kingsolver portrays
in the book. Lou Ann becomes so strong as the book progresses, she even supports Taylor who
supported her the most. Taylor and Mattie are even willing to break the law in order to support others.
Now that females are getting stronger and feminism is such an important topic, it s good to read about
strong females. It helps recognize how much females are doing especially to read something so

The Great Alaskan Voyage
The Great Alaskan Voyage
Waking up feeling the cold, brisk air, I rolled over and hopped off the pull out couch.
The idea of being in a small kayak in the ocean off the coast of Seward, Alaska was a little terrifying.
On July 14th, my family and I cruised on a kayaking trip in the Alaskan Pacific Ocean. From Miller s
Landing, we traveled to a World War II military base in kayaks. My family had been talking about this
kayak adventure since we planned our vacation to Alaska. I had no idea what to expect. All I knew is
that I was a baby kayaker paddling in a gianormous ocean. Little did I know, that I would paddle for
hours, explore not only Alaska s history, but America s, and have a lifetime experience that I will
never forget. I knew nothing about kayaking. Neither did the rest of my family. In the matter of maybe
15 minutes our kayak instructors, Matt and Amy educated us on how to paddle and keep the kayak
afloat, we were then launched into the frigid ocean. No one knew exactly how far we would be
paddling in this vast open water that seemed to engulf us all. In the beginning, I was being very
precise with my newly learned skills, starting the oar at my feet and pulling it up to my hip. I was also
precise on cutting the water correctly to save energy. Shortly after paddling which seemed like forever,
we were only halfway to our destination. Amy yelled out, The island is right up there, by then I was
ready for a break, my arms burned and my hips were stiff.

Minority Serving Institutions and the American Education...
Minority serving institutions have been an integral part of the education system in the United States
since before the Civil War (LeMelle, 2002). Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs)
have, for much of their existence, been criticized for the level of academic rigor, political context, and
their social agenda have created controversy for generations. With that being said, HBCUs hold a
valuable place in the landscape of US higher education institutions. The culture, history, and
perspective that is taught and shared are unparalleled and cannot be replicated at a predominately
white institution (PWI). The Higher Education Act of 1965 gave opportunities for educational
advancement and financial aid programs to previously disadvantaged students (Roebuck, 1993). This
meant that underrepresented minorities were then granted access to colleges and universities which
they were previously not permitted. As PWIs were increasing underrepresented minority enrollment in
the 1960s, HBCUs were gaining strength. Financial aid and accrediting bodies were paying closer
attention to the needs of these institutions; more and more students were enticed to enroll in higher
education and seek otherwise impossible opportunities. HBCUs face significant challenges. When
compared to PWIs, HBCUs are more likely to have students which are from low income
environments, be the first in their families to attend college, or need developmental courses (Rios,
2008). These challenges that

A + P Feminism
Feminism in the 1960s There is an apparent biased view against women in the short story A+P by
John Updike. Society is male dominated and women are discriminated against, whether they know it
or not. Such a restrictive culture and societal views are indicated by the inner thoughts of the narrator,
Sammy, who is the clerk at the supermarket. The interactions of three girls with the rest of the
townspeople are documented in Sammy s mind. Sammy s descriptions of people, the dialect of the
characters, and the actions that are noted converge to reveal the nature of the time and place of the
A+P supermarket. The majority of the story takes place in 19 year old Sammy s mind. Here he
describes, in detail, three girls in bathing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, the girls only speak when spoken to. This all indicates that the men of the society in A+P
assume a superior role over the females. It is prudent not to miss the fact that the only time dialect is
directed at the girls is when it is coming from a male and is against them, i.e. against what they are
wearing and where they are, and there are no niceties towards the girls in this conversation in any way,
shape, or form. The only occurrence of anyone defending the girls is when they have already been
discriminated against and have exited the premises. The actions/interactions/reactions of the characters
in this small setting also point to a female suppressed environment. The males have the gall to stare
openly at the girls as they go about their errands, while the women are shocked and their eyes snapped
back to their respective business. Some might argue that this is normal for men to stare while the same
sex oriented people quickly avert their gazes. However, this is also indicative of a patriarchy. The
status of the characters also indicates that even the store, an insignificantly small thing, follows the
status quo of society. The males are the only ones with jobs, while the females are commented to be
houseslaves. The naming of the characters is also blatantly slanted against the females. Sammy gives

Suicide Presents Challenges For Social Work
Suicide presents challenges for social work researchers as they seek answers and causative agents.
Obviously, the victim is not available to provide answers to the many questions that suicide creates.
However, there are other victims of suicide family, friends, and colleagues that may be able to provide
insights. The search for data typically begins with reviewing death certificates for cause of death.
From there, a technique known as psychological autopsy is used to recreate the state of mind and
health of the victim and any external environment causes of the suicide. The process is typically more
qualitative in data gathering since one of the primary techniques involves interviews with individuals
who knew the suicide victim. However, as pointed out by Rubin and Babbie, use of qualitative data
does not rule out the use of quantative techniques to refine and bin the data sets (text p. 564 5). For
example, age, gender, or socioeconomic data gathered during the interview process may lead to
insights when the data are binned and searched for trends or distributions. This is also the case when
medical records are available that may provide other insights to concomitant illnesses and quantative
analyses are performed. Psychological autopsies have revealed that more than 90% of suicides involve
coexisting mental disorders; predominantly mood and/or substance use disorders (Isometsä ET, 2001,
para. 1). Medical records and physical autopsies may soon provide other

Niemi s Argument Analysis
Niemi (2011) makes the argument that there is a greater need for civics classes at an early age in order
to increase political knowledge that students have in the future. The premise is that political attention
and voting are habitual, and promoting these values at a young age may create a type of inertia that
will carry out throughout their lives. In order to be successful, however, I would argue that simply
presenting information about political events and actors would not be sufficient. Neimi makes the
statement earlier that American students are struggling in mathematics and science, but then contents
that simply adding more classes with have a positive effect on civics. Instead of simply adding more
avenues of information for students, it makes more theoretical sense to make these classes active.
Social Learning Theory (Bandura, 1977) would argue that in order to gain benefits of habitual voting,
they would need to rehearse the practice of voting. Given that many High school students cannot vote,
it would be up to the civics classes to simulate the experience of voting in a tangible way for the
students to receive benefits. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fishbein (1979) argues that intentions are the strongest predictor of behavior, and issues arise in
changing behavior when behavioral outcomes and actions are conflated. A behavioral outcome is a
grand, general goal. An example would being a good citizen. A behavioral action is a specific
occurrence that contributes to an outcome, but does not completely satisfy the outcome. An example

Taking a Look at Ski Jumping
The 2014 Olympics held a wide range of competitions for athletes. One of the events, ski jumping,
was part of the Olympics since the first games in 1924. Ski jumping was born in 1860 when
Norwegian Sondre Norheim, built the first measured jump and flew 30 metres. That record held for
more than three decades. Ski jumping is a sport where skiers go down a ramp, jump, attempt to fly as
far as possible, and land safely. Judges give points to skiers for proper technique and style, but those
points do not add much to the total as the distance contributes to the majority of the scoring. Over the
last 100 years, ski jumping has changed enormously due to the new technology made available. The
modern sport involves a extreme amount of practice, patience and confidence. The sport is very
popular, but also very dangerous. Factors like wind can severely effect a skiers score.
The top of the hill is the start. There is a bar at the top that the jumper sits on while they are waiting
and getting ready. Once ready, the ski jumper will lean forward and will naturally start accelerating
down the pre made path on the platform. The in run usually has an angle of 38o to 36o, which then
turns into the jump at the end of the run. The end of the run usually has an angle between 7o and 12o
downhill. The ground after the jump is precisely made so the jumper is never over 6 meters over the
ground. This measure is in place so if the jumper loses balance, they will not fall very far before
hitting the

English Colonies Dbq
The original colonies in Northern America faced rapid development in the early seventeenth century,
as the original colonists saw great potential in the region, and they gave hope to individuals
throughout Europe for better lives. The original English colonists of 1607 1630 brought numerous
values to Northern America that shaped the colonial lifestyle, and have continued to influence U.S.
history. The colonies were rooted in religious ideals, labor opportunities, and the hope for economic
gain. These original colonial values vary in the extent to which they shaped, and continue to shape,
American history, but have all influenced the American character to some degree. The earliest English
settlements in Northern America consisted of Jamestown, Plymouth, and the Massachusetts Bay
Colony. The Pilgrims were Separatists that journeyed across the Atlantic Ocean aboard the Mayflower
in 1620 in order to break away from the corrupt Church of England. They established the colony of
Plymouth where they were able to practice their religion freely. Similarly, another Christian group
called the Puritans, left England in 1630, also seeking refuge to practice their beliefs freely. John
Winthrop created the notion of the City Upon a Hill for the Massachusetts Bay colony that
exemplified the pure lifestyle and governance that would influence other societies (Doc D). The
United States has a long history of religious splintering and various religious movements over 900

Conformity as Seen by Different Cultures Essay
Whether we know it or not, we all tend to succumb to the norm of others. We do something or act a
certain way because we want to fit in with the others around us. Whether it be from bullying,
persuasion, teasing, criticism, or social norm, conforming to the way of society is a part of life.
Conformity is defined as a change in behavior or belief in order to accord with others. We all strive to
be liked and to fit in, sometimes conforming to others around us is the only was we see fit to do so.
Other factors that effect conformity are group size, unanimity, cohesion, public response, and prior
commitment (Bikhchandani, Hirshleifer Welch, 1998). Different cultures view conformity in different
ways. Western individualistic cultures ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like wearing pink for breast cancer, or wearing shoes in public places (Myers, 2013). There is
different types of conformity. Among those are compliance, obedience, and acceptance. Compliance is
when you disagree about a certain situation or idea, but go along with it anyway. A person may
internally believe that this action is wrong or worthless, but the reason they do it, is to not stand out or
publicly make a scene. These people fall victim to majority rule (Myers, 2013). Instead of sticking to
their beliefs, they conform to gain acceptance or praise (Myers, 2013). Obedience is the act of
conforming due to a command from someone else, usually of higher authority. Milgram performed an
experiment on two men at a Yale college psychology laboratory. He studied the effect of when the
commands of a higher up personal clashes with ones conscious. In the experiment, One of the men
was actually helping Milgram and drew the part of the learner. The learner was taught a list of words
by the other participant. Shocks were supposedly delivered for wrongly repeating a word from the list
(Mcleod). The participants were told that this experiment was to teach the effects of punishment on
learning. Each time the learner said a wrong answer, the shock intensity increased. As the test
persisted and the shocks got worse, the leaner would scream out phrases like get me out of here

How Did Al Capone Impact Society
During the period of prohibition, from 1920 to 1933, the sale, manufacture and transportation of
alcohol was made illegal, through the Volstead act of 1919, leading to the first and only time an
Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was repealed. Throughout this time in American history
gangsters were common and were constantly increasing in every city but one in particular stood out
from all the others making a significant impact on American history. Scarface, Alphonse Capone or
more commonly known as Al Capone; who was the most infamous gangster, taking advantage of the
era of Prohibition, ran an organized crime association in Chicago during the 1920s. He was
responsible for over 500 murders; he had 700 men under his control and earned $60 million a year for
bootlegging. Capone, who was glamorised in media and shown as charitable to the helpless was also
controlling and violent and became an iconic figure of the successful American gangster who insisted
he was just supplying the public demand .
As Al Capone was such a controversy his significance, the interpretations of how he made an impact
on American lives, culture and politics and how he was remembered at the time and remembered
today varies greatly between different people.

The Competency Assessment Programme ( Cap )
Exemplar Currently, I am completing one of the requirements of the Competency Assessment
Programme (CAP) which is undergoing the clinical placement. When I learned that I will be assigned
to work at an aged care facility, I felt excited. The feeling of imagining what will it be like working as
a registered nurse in an aged care facility makes me feel satisfied because I know that aged care work
is rewarding in itself since I have worked before as a healthcare assistant for a year. I was assigned to
work at Hospital 1. On a Friday morning during our medication rounds with my preceptor, our
attention was drawn by one of the caregiver s report about a resident who is experiencing difficulty in
breathing. The resident s name is Map (pseudonym). He is 76 years old with a history of stroke. He
has right sided weakness and has the inability to produce speech. He also has a history of multiple
hospital admission over the years due to chest infection. As soon as we heard her report, we stopped
doing our medication rounds and attended to the said resident. When we came into Map s
(pseudonym) room, we saw him positioned on a semi Fowler s at approximately 30 degree angle. I
heard his productive cough and observed retractions, use of accessory muscles when breathing,
inability to lie flat in bed, extreme diaphoresis, and central cyanosis. On that particular moment, I also
observed that a healthcare assistant is present at the bedside trying to sit him up. When we asked what

My Job At The Age Of 16

one. I have worked in multiple jobs in different industries, holding different positions and performing
different functions. I got my first job at the age of 16. A week later, got another job as a part time
employee. This time, I was still in high school. Since then, I have transited through five jobs until I
landed a job with my current employer where I have been working for the past two years. Having met

They work with the notion that they are the boss and do not need to associate with their juniors
provided that job is being done the way they need it to be done. A good manager will consider the
work to be done and the employees available to perform the work to avoid overload. In case of
absenteeism, they will find a way to fill the created space and ensure that quality and quantity is met
without overworking the present employees. Alternatively, if the work is not urgent, it can be
suspended for another day when the right number of workforce is present. In case of any faults in the
production system, a good manager will first ask for the factors that might have contributed to the

bad manager does not care about the amount of work to be performed by each employee and what
they care most is to achieve the daily production cost. Any faults resulting from employee fatigue due

The Intrinsic Value Of Facebook
What is the intrinsic value of a Facebook share? How does this valuation compare to the price talk
from underwriters? The intrinsic value of Facebook stock was very difficult to find, since the company
is relatively new and has been growing at an extreme rate. Based on the most recent sale of Facebook
stock via a private transaction the per share price was $44 in March. However, based on the DCF
analysis by professor Aswath Damodaran the intrinsic value of a single Facebook share would be
$32.44. The problem is whenever using DCF analysis; the analysis is very sensitive to all assumptions
uses, which were plenty in the case of Facebook. The price talk from underwriters varied immensely
within the time from of February when the Red Herring was filed, all the way to May. At the very
beginning, price talks were anywhere from $20 mid $30 s. They were set to offer 337,415,352 shares.
As the broader market continued in bullish trend and momentum for the Facebook IPO became
greater. Price talks now shifted to $28 $35 range. Knowing that demand for the stock was said to be
growing it was noted that many IPO are priced conservative to leave room for a pop on the first day of
trading. On May 11 CNBC made a statement along the lines that demand was much greater than
supply for the stock. Shortly after on May 14, the price talks had now moved to $34 $38 range and
now offering 421,233,615 shares, the additional shares were all of insiders. This would set the

Louisville And Nashville R. V. Mottley Summary
Case Citation: Louisville and Nashville R. Co. v. Mottley, 211 U.S. 149 (1908)
Parties: Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company, Petitioner E.L Mottley and Annie E. Mottley,
Defendants
Facts: E.L. Mottley and his wife, Annie E. Mottley, (plaintiffs) were passengers on board a train
operated by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company (defendants). Both the plaintiffs and the
defendant are citizens of the state of Kentucky. The plaintiffs, while passengers on board a train, were
injured in a train wreck on September 7, 1871. The defendants offered the injured plaintiffs a free pass
from the defendant s railroad company in exchange for the agreement that they would not bring suit
upon the defendant. The plaintiffs accepted the free passes which would be renewed yearly. Several
decades later, in 1906, a law was passed by the U.S. Congress banning free railroad passes. This was
passed in order to prevent bribery on government workers and officials. This caused the defendant to
refuse the plaintiffs renewal of their free passes in which they then filed suit for specific performance
in the Circuit Court for the Western District of Kentucky. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The plaintiffs stated that the law that was passed by congress did not apply to them because that law
was passed decades after they were offered and they accepted the free passes from the defendants.
They also argued that if the law passed by congress did apply to them then the law should be
considered unconstitutional due to the law depriving the defendants their property without due process
of law. The defendant attempted to object the pleadings of the plaintiff in which the judge of the
Circuit court overruled and awarded relief to the plaintiffs. The defendants then appealed straight to

The Paradox Of A Paradox
Introduction
A paradox is a statement or idea that is contradictory in nature giving opposing meanings at the same
time. The use of paradoxes has been employed to engage readers to be part of the story or poem;
readers are tempted to pay more attention. There are direct types of paradoxes ranging from situational
paradoxes to verbal paradoxes. Most literature deals with situational paradoxes as well of verbal
paradoxes depending on what the writer wants to share.
Veridical paradox usually describes a situation that is logically true although it may sound ridiculous.
On the other hand, a falsidical paradox presents a problem that usually uses incorrect assumptions to
justify an, otherwise, wrong results. An antimony paradox is a self referential paradox lays out a set of
conditions and then asks a question, the resolution of which becomes self contradictory, resulting to
lack of a valid answer. On the other hand, a dialetheia paradox claims that opposite statements can be
both simultaneously true.
In the book Fifth Walk, the Rousseau has employed numerous paradoxes that are focused on his
personality and his state of solitude. There is substantial number of paradoxes that the writer has
employed most of which focus on his state of solitude. In the story, the writer narrates how he wished
he could stay longer than just two months. He further regrets that he should have stayed for two
centuries or the whole eternity in the island. A paradox is revealed where he mentions that

Essay on A Child Soldier s Life

A Child Soldier s Life The life of a child soldier is not an easy one; it s full of violence and bloodshed.
Children from most ages get recruited and are forced to do things that they are against, things that are
against their beliefs. But although child soldiers suffer through many mental disorders, they can still
be respectable adults. They go through many things, the recruiting itself, then the violence, after
comes the horrifying rehabilitation and last they are finally reintegrated into society. In A Long Way
Gone, Ishmael suffered from these things, himself explaining that at some point in his life, he just

Developments in International Rehabilitation of Child Soldiers ). Different methods are taken to help
these children rehabilitate, but none the less, they are rehabilitated, and helped, taken away from the
war and returned to their childhoods.
After the children are rehabilitated, they are reintegrated into society with the hope that they will
continue their lives violence free. Actual studies have been made to evaluate the process of the
children after they are rehabilitated and thrown back into society. In the study, children who had killed
someone increased levels in hostility, others who survived rape also had high levels of anxiety and
hostility but they had shown greater confidence and prosocial attitudes. At the end of the study, the
improved community acceptance lowered levels of depression and improved confidence and prosocial
attitudes despite the violent past. (Betancourt, Sierra Leone s Former Child Soldiers: A Follow up

The Undeniable Occurrence of Modern Day Miracles
Nowadays, people in general tend to use the word miracle when referring to a surprising event, such
as the Patriots coming back from a 25 point deficit to win Super Bowl LI, or the American hockey

Today, social networking websites like Facebook and MySpace are some of the most visited websites
on the Internet. Minors have played a significant role in the popularity and success of social

legislators alike are concerned about the child s online safety. A common suggestion is age
verification. Ideally, age verification would exclude users over a specified age or under a specified

how this could allow for convicted sex offender could be verified. Mandated age verification, as
proposed, would allow the hundreds of thousands of offenders ... who are over 18, unrestricted access

Cardillo tested the security processes on Imbee.com. Cardillo and his security team were able to create

Research Paper On Sophie Germain
Sophie Germain also called Marie Sophie Germain was a famous French mathematician who proved
many theories during her time. Sophie was born on April 1, 1776 in Rue Saint Denis, Paris, France.
She was the daughter of a wealthy upper class French family. Her parents name were Ambroise
Francois Germain and Marie Madeleine. Her father,Ambroise, was a merchant and also the director of
the Bank of France. The year 1776 was a special year because Sophie was born and the American

she read a book called the Legend of Archimedes Death. Archimedes was speared to death because of

Summary Of Nietzsche s Genealogy Of Morals
In Nietzsche s book, Genealogy of Morals, Nietzsche gives his account of the origin of guilt.
Nietzsche initially states that guilt is rooted in one s instinctual desire to cause suffering in order to
express power over others. However, once an individual becomes integrated and cultured into society,
they are prevented from such behavior. One s instinct then for cruelty remains intact causing the
individual to find another way to express their power. Nietzsche explains that because of this, bad
conscience arises. Instead of inflicting cruelty or expressing dominance over others, individuals do so
upon themselves. Nietzsche refers to this as internalization. Initially Nietzsche s text comes off as very
strange and odd considering Nietzsche s argument that we as individuals take pleasure in causing
ourselves pain and suffering. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The feeling of guilt from Nietzsche s account is characterized by holding oneself responsible not only
for one s acquired obligations, but also for the flawed nature of one s living existence. Nietzsche
appeals to this notion of indebtedness in his explanation of the development of guilt by referring to the
perceived indebtedness towards ancestors and gods. This started when tribes thought that their
existence had been reliant on the sacrifices and achievements from generations prior. This created a
feeling of indebtedness amongst the tribes and as a result, pushed tribes to give reparations as forms of
sacrifices. From this concept, Nietzsche explains further that being in debt to one s creditor could be
the outcome of many possibilities including torture, punishment and/or cruelty onto the person in debt.
Making others endure pain as a result was joyful in the eyes of the creditor (the own being owed the
loan, money, favor, etc.). Such joy according to Nietzsche balances out an unpaid

The Issue Of Underage Drinking
The issue of underage drinking has been constant for many years. The law for the minimum drinking
age allows people 21 and older to legally drink alcoholic beverages. It is hard to enforce this law
especially on college campuses where lots of underage drinking takes place. Someone that is 18 and
older can get into some clubs where they are getting drinks even though they are not supposed to.
There is a level of responsibility they needs to be taken when people are drinking. They should know
how to handle themselves when alcohol is in their system. Consuming too many alcoholic beverages
can cause health issues, behavior issues, and have other harmful effects on a person. The issues that
come along with drinking alcohol will affect teenagers and college students more than it would affect
someone that is 21 or older. The minimum drinking age law should remain at 21 to keep more young
adults from encountering issues associated with drinking. Young adults that are in the age range of 18
20 are more likely to be more reckless than someone who is older and more mature. Adolescents hit
the age of 18 and feel like they are grown and finally able to do what they want to do. Some have
already started drinking alcohol and will start to drink it more frequently. Having alcohol in their
systems will cause their behavior to change and could affect their rationale of thinking. Their senses
will be affected as well which causes more accidental injuries, altercations, and driving

  • 2. The Stanford Prison Experiment And Philip G Zimbardo In chapter two, we study the research methods of different psychological experiments and studies. This includes the ethical obligations of researchers toward the participants in their research, which are enforced by institutional review boards at American research colleges and universities. In these studies, researchers are required to provide the following: (a) informed consent of the purpose of the research, its expected duration, and any potential risks, discomfort, or adverse associated with it ; (b) protection for harm and discomfort; (c) knowledge of deception in a study and debriefing once the study has concluded. These obligations are required to protect research participants. However, these are not always followed in research. In the 2015 movie, The Stanford Prison Experiment , audiences are shown a reenactment of the notorious true story. In August of 1971, psychologist, Philip G. Zimbardo, at Stanford University was interested on the psychological effect that prison s have on human behavior. Therefore, Zimbardo put an ad in the newspaper reading, Male college students needed for psychological study of prison life. $15 per day for 1 2 weeks beginning Aug. 14. However, this was not before the guards already showed major problems with throwing authority around by hitting a prisoner . On the second day of the experiment, prisoners rebelled against the guards which provoked the guards to put a rewards and punishment system into place, which turned into a hunger for power. This power hungry alliance of guards forced three prisoners to be released from the experiment for traumatic experiences by day four. As the experiment continued, the guards only became more tyrannical while the prisoners become more unhinged. This forced Dr. Zimbardo to finally discontinue the experiment after day ... • 3. College Giveaways Over the course over the summer, I completed 125 hours of volunteer work with the Street Team for the sport athletic market department here at North Carolina State University. Throughout the summer, the summer interns put together a master list of different events throughout the community and university for the other volunteers and me to attend. Each month I would be scheduled to attend different events in which I would promote NC State athletics. It was required that I arrived 30 minutes to an hour prior of start time to set up what was needed for occasion. There was a checklist created to make sure that I had everything that was needed to run a successful event. Mainly, the objective was to promote NC State athletics by handing out and distributing giveaways and apparel. Usually there would be a prize wheel stationed on our table, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The obvious target market was the new class of students, along with the transfer students. Due to this being an on campus event catering to primarily students and parents, more information in regards to student ticketing and other ticketing information were the main focus point. We didn t bring many giveaways because this would be a more of an information based event This orientation allowed for new students to prepare themselves for the transition to what would be their new homes for however many years that was needed for them to graduate. I enjoyed answering questions pertaining to the game day process and how to request tickets. Many of the new students didn t understand the difference in revenue sports versus none revenue sports so that became a hot topic of discussion. Many of the new students also didn t understand the lottery based system and how the loyalty points accounted for future event so in all, I spent majority of my time at this event helping students become accustomed to how the ticketing process ... • 4. Resilience Model The second component of PsyCap is optimism. Optimistic individuals expect positive outcomes regardless of their capabilities (You, 2016). When these individuals experience success, they attribute it to internal and stable processes (You, 2016). In contrast, they attribute failure to temporary, external and unstable processes (You, 2016). Even after encountering failure, they remain motivated and move forward with positive expectations (Gurol Kerimgil, 2010; You, 2016). In this regard, to help cope with my situation, I could have tried to have a more positive approach towards my failure. When I dropped out I felt stupid and unintelligent. Many people would know of this unfortunate incident, but not many would know that it was probably the cause of an ineffective communication. The incident goes as follows, In July of 1945, the allied leaders had a meeting in Potsdam and they submitted a stiffly worded declaration of surrender terms to the Japanese. These terms had included a statement to the effect that any negative answer would invite prompt and utter destruction. The allied leaders (Harry S Truman, Winston Churchill and Stalin) also stated that they hoped that Japan would agree to surrender unconditionally and prevent devastation of the Japanese homeland and that they patiently awaited Japan s answer. This was known as the Potsdam Declaration. The Japanese Premier at that time, Kantaro Suzuki answered using the Japanese word mokusatsu , which is derived from the word for silence . Yet, this word had a second meaning which also means not worthy of comment . In the heat of the moment, the meaning was thought to be the second one, which may be true as the Japanese were very prideful, as we can see from the Kamikaze spirit. To rather die than be captured. For decades scientists have been studying Mars, they have been using rovers and from there they collected data, samples, and took pictures. These rovers study Mars atmosphere, temperatures, weather, if it has water, and a lot more. With all of the data the scientists have gathered we know that Mars atmosphere is a lot different than our, yet still has similarities. Even though Earth and Mars are in the same solar system and orbit the same sun, Mars atmosphere and the planet itself is a lot different from Earth. Mars is 142 million miles away from the sun, with a year being 687 days long. It is about half of Earth s size, and is one tenth of Earth s mass. Mars atmosphere is carbon based, containing 95.3% carbon dioxide, and also it only has .3% water vapor (Source for %). The average temperature on Mars is 81 degrees Fahrenheit which is approximately 62 degrees Celsius (NASA). Mars atmosphere is also very thin, so it does not allow liquid water to exist at the surface for long (Newsela). Also Mars has a lot less gravity, Earth has 62.5% more gravity than Mars does (NASA). Mars environment would not be very hospitable for human life. Earth also differs a lot from Mars, Earth is 78.1% nitrogen, and 20.9% oxygen, and isn t carbon based (Source for %). My father has always taught me that you help others in any way you can, no matter the sacrifice. He also instilled in me to be grateful that I am fortunate enough to have the ability to help others. These values were taught to him by his father who was a veteran of the Army and through his career as a firefighter. The idea of being in a small kayak in the ocean off the coast of Seward, Alaska was a little terrifying. On July 14th, my family and I cruised on a kayaking trip in the Alaskan Pacific Ocean. From Miller s Landing, we traveled to a World War II military base in kayaks. My family had been talking about this kayak adventure since we planned our vacation to Alaska. I had no idea what to expect. All I knew is that I was a baby kayaker paddling in a gianormous ocean. Little did I know, that I would paddle for hours, explore not only Alaska s history, but America s, and have a lifetime experience that I will never forget. I knew nothing about kayaking. Neither did the rest of my family. In the matter of maybe 15 minutes our kayak instructors, Matt and Amy educated us on how to paddle and keep the kayak afloat, we were then launched into the frigid ocean. No one knew exactly how far we would be paddling in this vast open water that seemed to engulf us all. In the beginning, I was being very precise with my newly learned skills, starting the oar at my feet and pulling it up to my hip. I was also precise on cutting the water correctly to save energy. Minority serving institutions have been an integral part of the education system in the United States since before the Civil War (LeMelle, 2002). Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have, for much of their existence, been criticized for the level of academic rigor, political context, and their social agenda have created controversy for generations. With that being said, HBCUs hold a valuable place in the landscape of US higher education institutions. The culture, history, and perspective that is taught and shared are unparalleled and cannot be replicated at a predominately white institution (PWI). The Higher Education Act of 1965 gave opportunities for educational advancement and financial aid programs to previously disadvantaged students (Roebuck, 1993). This meant that underrepresented minorities were then granted access to colleges and universities which they were previously not permitted. As PWIs were increasing underrepresented minority enrollment in the 1960s, HBCUs were gaining strength. Financial aid and accrediting bodies were paying closer attention to the needs of these institutions; more and more students were enticed to enroll in higher education and seek otherwise impossible opportunities. HBCUs face significant challenges. When compared to PWIs, HBCUs are more likely to have students which are from low income environments, be the first in their families to attend college, or need developmental courses (Rios, 2008). Furthermore, the girls only speak when spoken to. This all indicates that the men of the society in A+P assume a superior role over the females. It is prudent not to miss the fact that the only time dialect is directed at the girls is when it is coming from a male and is against them, i.e. against what they are wearing and where they are, and there are no niceties towards the girls in this conversation in any way, shape, or form. The only occurrence of anyone defending the girls is when they have already been discriminated against and have exited the premises. The actions/interactions/reactions of the characters in this small setting also point to a female suppressed environment. The males have the gall to stare openly at the girls as they go about their errands, while the women are shocked and their eyes snapped back to their respective business. Some might argue that this is normal for men to stare while the same sex oriented people quickly avert their gazes. However, this is also indicative of a patriarchy. The status of the characters also indicates that even the store, an insignificantly small thing, follows the status quo of society. • 19. Suicide Presents Challenges For Social Work Suicide presents challenges for social work researchers as they seek answers and causative agents. Obviously, the victim is not available to provide answers to the many questions that suicide creates. However, there are other victims of suicide family, friends, and colleagues that may be able to provide insights. The search for data typically begins with reviewing death certificates for cause of death. From there, a technique known as psychological autopsy is used to recreate the state of mind and health of the victim and any external environment causes of the suicide. The process is typically more qualitative in data gathering since one of the primary techniques involves interviews with individuals who knew the suicide victim. However, as pointed out by Rubin and Babbie, use of qualitative data does not rule out the use of quantative techniques to refine and bin the data sets (text p. 564 5). For example, age, gender, or socioeconomic data gathered during the interview process may lead to insights when the data are binned and searched for trends or distributions. This is also the case when medical records are available that may provide other insights to concomitant illnesses and quantative analyses are performed. Psychological autopsies have revealed that more than 90% of suicides involve coexisting mental disorders; predominantly mood and/or substance use disorders (Isometsä ET, 2001, para. 1). • 20. Niemi s Argument Analysis Niemi (2011) makes the argument that there is a greater need for civics classes at an early age in order to increase political knowledge that students have in the future. The premise is that political attention and voting are habitual, and promoting these values at a young age may create a type of inertia that will carry out throughout their lives. In order to be successful, however, I would argue that simply presenting information about political events and actors would not be sufficient. Neimi makes the statement earlier that American students are struggling in mathematics and science, but then contents that simply adding more classes with have a positive effect on civics. Instead of simply adding more avenues of information for students, it makes more theoretical sense to make these classes active. Social Learning Theory (Bandura, 1977) would argue that in order to gain benefits of habitual voting, they would need to rehearse the practice of voting. Given that many High school students cannot vote, it would be up to the civics classes to simulate the experience of voting in a tangible way for the students to receive benefits. ... Ski jumping was born in 1860 when Norwegian Sondre Norheim, built the first measured jump and flew 30 metres. That record held for more than three decades. Ski jumping is a sport where skiers go down a ramp, jump, attempt to fly as far as possible, and land safely. Judges give points to skiers for proper technique and style, but those points do not add much to the total as the distance contributes to the majority of the scoring. Over the last 100 years, ski jumping has changed enormously due to the new technology made available. The modern sport involves a extreme amount of practice, patience and confidence. The sport is very popular, but also very dangerous. Factors like wind can severely effect a skiers score. The top of the hill is the start. Mottley, 211 U.S. 149 (1908) Parties: Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company, Petitioner E.L Mottley and Annie E. Mottley, Defendants Facts: E.L. Mottley and his wife, Annie E. Mottley, (plaintiffs) were passengers on board a train operated by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Company (defendants). Both the plaintiffs and the defendant are citizens of the state of Kentucky. The plaintiffs, while passengers on board a train, were injured in a train wreck on September 7, 1871. The defendants offered the injured plaintiffs a free pass from the defendant s railroad company in exchange for the agreement that they would not bring suit upon the defendant. The plaintiffs accepted the free passes which would be renewed yearly. Several decades later, in 1906, a law was passed by the U.S. Congress banning free railroad passes. This was passed in order to prevent bribery on government workers and officials. This caused the defendant to refuse the plaintiffs renewal of their free passes in which they then filed suit for specific performance in the Circuit Court for the Western District of Kentucky. ... The defendant attempted to object the pleadings of the plaintiff in which the judge of the Circuit court overruled and awarded relief to the plaintiffs. • 31. The Paradox Of A Paradox Introduction A paradox is a statement or idea that is contradictory in nature giving opposing meanings at the same time. The use of paradoxes has been employed to engage readers to be part of the story or poem; readers are tempted to pay more attention. There are direct types of paradoxes ranging from situational paradoxes to verbal paradoxes. Most literature deals with situational paradoxes as well of verbal paradoxes depending on what the writer wants to share. Veridical paradox usually describes a situation that is logically true although it may sound ridiculous. On the other hand, a falsidical paradox presents a problem that usually uses incorrect assumptions to justify an, otherwise, wrong results. An antimony paradox is a self referential paradox lays out a set of conditions and then asks a question, the resolution of which becomes self contradictory, resulting to lack of a valid answer. On the other hand, a dialetheia paradox claims that opposite statements can be both simultaneously true. In the book Fifth Walk, the Rousseau has employed numerous paradoxes that are focused on his personality and his state of solitude. There is substantial number of paradoxes that the writer has employed most of which focus on his state of solitude. In the story, the writer narrates how he wished he could stay longer than just two months. He further regrets that he should have stayed for two centuries or the whole eternity in the island. A paradox is revealed where he mentions that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on A Child Soldier s Life Carolina Quinones Mr. Paradis English 10 11 June 2013 A Child Soldier s Life The life of a child soldier is not an easy one; it s full of violence and bloodshed. Children from most ages get recruited and are forced to do things that they are against, things that are against their beliefs. But although child soldiers suffer through many mental disorders, they can still be respectable adults. They go through many things, the recruiting itself, then the violence, after comes the horrifying rehabilitation and last they are finally reintegrated into society. In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael suffered from these things, himself explaining that at some point in his life, he just went numb to everything (Beah 121). Throughout Africa, rebel ... Different methods are taken to help these children rehabilitate, but none the less, they are rehabilitated, and helped, taken away from the war and returned to their childhoods. After the children are rehabilitated, they are reintegrated into society with the hope that they will continue their lives violence free. Actual studies have been made to evaluate the process of the children after they are rehabilitated and thrown back into society. In the study, children who had killed someone increased levels in hostility, others who survived rape also had high levels of anxiety and hostility but they had shown greater confidence and prosocial attitudes. At the end of the study, the improved community acceptance lowered levels of depression and improved confidence and prosocial attitudes despite the violent past. Minors have played a significant role in the popularity and success of social networking. With children having such an active presence on these types of sites, parents and legislators alike are concerned about the child s online safety. A common suggestion is age verification. The article noted that Cardillo tested the security processes on Imbee.com. • 37. Summary Of Nietzsche s Genealogy Of Morals In Nietzsche s book, Genealogy of Morals, Nietzsche gives his account of the origin of guilt. Nietzsche initially states that guilt is rooted in one s instinctual desire to cause suffering in order to express power over others. However, once an individual becomes integrated and cultured into society, they are prevented from such behavior. One s instinct then for cruelty remains intact causing the individual to find another way to express their power. Nietzsche explains that because of this, bad conscience arises. Instead of inflicting cruelty or expressing dominance over others, individuals do so upon themselves. Nietzsche refers to this as internalization. Initially Nietzsche s text comes off as very strange and odd considering Nietzsche s argument that we as individuals take pleasure in causing ourselves pain and suffering. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The feeling of guilt from Nietzsche s account is characterized by holding oneself responsible not only for one s acquired obligations, but also for the flawed nature of one s living existence. Nietzsche appeals to this notion of indebtedness in his explanation of the development of guilt by referring to the perceived indebtedness towards ancestors and gods. This started when tribes thought that their existence had been reliant on the sacrifices and achievements from generations prior. This created a feeling of indebtedness amongst the tribes and as a result, pushed tribes to give reparations as forms of sacrifices. From this concept, Nietzsche explains further that being in debt to one s creditor could be the outcome of many possibilities including torture, punishment and/or cruelty onto the person in debt. Making others endure pain as a result was joyful in the eyes of the creditor (the own being owed the loan, money, favor, etc.). Such joy according to Nietzsche balances out an unpaid ... • 38. The Issue Of Underage Drinking The issue of underage drinking has been constant for many years. The law for the minimum drinking age allows people 21 and older to legally drink alcoholic beverages. It is hard to enforce this law especially on college campuses where lots of underage drinking takes place. Someone that is 18 and older can get into some clubs where they are getting drinks even though they are not supposed to. There is a level of responsibility they needs to be taken when people are drinking. They should know how to handle themselves when alcohol is in their system. Consuming too many alcoholic beverages can cause health issues, behavior issues, and have other harmful effects on a person. The issues that come along with drinking alcohol will affect teenagers and college students more than it would affect someone that is 21 or older. The minimum drinking age law should remain at 21 to keep more young adults from encountering issues associated with drinking. Young adults that are in the age range of 18 20 are more likely to be more reckless than someone who is older and more mature. Adolescents hit the age of 18 and feel like they are grown and finally able to do what they want to do. Some have already started drinking alcohol and will start to drink it more frequently. Having alcohol in their systems will cause their behavior to change and could affect their rationale of thinking. Their senses will be affected as well which causes more accidental injuries, altercations, and driving ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
