Commentary on Alphonso Lingis’s article, The World as a...
Commentary on Alphonso Lingis s article, The World as a Whole
Martin Heidegger s work in Being and Time elucidated a phenomenological ontology in which death
and anxiety function as the imminent possibility of impossibility, circumscribing Dasein and
inscribing weight to Dasein s temporal existence. He constructs an individual whose ontological
whole is made of three fundamental elements that function as a whole; understanding, feeling and
action. This being, Dasein (translated as Being There), exists in the world, and Heidegger constructs
Dasein s ontology as being in the world. This is the way Alphonso Lingis predicates his understanding
of Heidegerrian phenomenology in an essay from Research in Phenomenology entitled The World ...

Heidegger spoke of Dasein intentionally. He did not want to limit his language to that of Heidegger
and speak of just the human, because the limitations this term would imply. Being and Time is a very
complex work, this article does a very good job at tackling Heidegger s project, but it focuses on a few
things. Lingis discusses Dasein as being constitutive of the world , Dasein is being in the world.
Dasein is in the world, and dwelling is characterized as care , states Lingis. He shows us how Dasein
sees the things in the world as a field of equipment for use, The practicable field, a layout of relays, is
later characterized as openness. This openness is suspended in the abysses of nothingness, death.
Dasein is thrown into the world, Heidegger shows us how we are born into a world which we have not
constructed, which we cannot control. The Others are already there, we encounter them when we
encounter their buildings, their constructions, their language. The common world precedes and makes
possible the perceptual field of any individual. The language, the interpretive system of Das Man
precedes and makes possible any singularizing interpretation of one s own situation. Dasein is being in
the world with others. Dasein s function is projection, Dasein is temporal, and as we ve said Dasein
has three facets: understanding,

General Motors External
Executive Summary The United States has been experiencing a weak economy, which has
dramatically affected sales within the automotive industry. The industry as a whole has been
struggling, but the U.S. companies have had the worst results. Also, the desired product mix has
recently changed to more fuel efficient vehicles instead of large SUV s and trucks (S P, 2008, p.1).
The following analysis will discuss in detail the external environment of the auto industry and then
transition to examining the internal environment of the U.S. firm, General Motors. GM is a large and
well known domestic auto manufacturer that was the leader in U.S. auto sales for many years and at
one time possessed a 47.4% market share. However, GM is now more ... Show more content on

Until now, it was hoped that the fallout from the declines in home prices would be contained, first to
the sub prime market, then to broader real estate backed assets, and finally the hope was that the
damage could be restricted to just the financial sector. Unfortunately, each of these barriers have been
breached and combined with a broader unraveling of credit markets and a credit crunch. So, we have
seen continued spillovers into other areas of the economy, including the automobile industry (New
York Times). Not too long ago, the auto industry had room for small, independent manufacturers such
as Saab, Jaguar and Volvo. But since the mid to late 1980 s the industry s big players have been
buying up their smaller rivals (Forbes.com). The economic downturn, rising oil prices, and the cost of
developing new technologies have made it much harder for new entrants to come into the industry.
Therefore, new entrants do not pose a threat to the existing competitors of the automotive industry due
to the economy and the large capital requirements needed in order to be successful. For example, at
General Motors alone the company must raise an estimated minimum of $15 billion in new capital to
stay competitive within the industry (New York Times). The new capital requirements will mostly be
used to perform research and development. This

Children With Developmental Disabilities During The 1960s...
During the 1950s, people who had a disability had two options of housing which included living with
their families or living in an institution. However, families did not receive much support since most
public welfare services were used towards institutional care, such as mental hospitals and orphanages.
Throughout the 1960s there were movements to deinstitutionalize, which at that time basically led to
smaller institutions. The 1970s allowed for even smaller community based residential services that
were typically designed for not more than 12 people that were similar in terms of age, independence,
or ability. Even though different funding was available, many standards were violated in most of the
institutions. Throughout the 70s there were movements to close state institutions and provide more
community residential services as well as family support. During the 1980s groundwork for families
was laid to expand their control of the nature of the support they received and more options were
available to help out with living outside an institution. People with developmental disabilities began to
gain increased support to having homes of their own during the 1990s and funded had dramatically
increased to over $735 for family support programs in 1998. In 2001 the federal government began a
new freedom initiative to remove barriers to community living for people of all ages with disabilities
and long term illness. In 2011 the decision that the isolation of people with

Similarities Between Silk Road And Indian Ocean Trade
Throughout early history, civilizations often sought to receive resources from afar to sustain their
societies and keep themselves thriving, and to this end trade relations and eventually trade routes
began to emerge. This aided civilizations in their discovery of foreign items that they may use to better
their societies. These items traded ranged from complex technology to something as simple as
nutmeg. The main trade routes that were utilized in East and South Asia were the silk road and the
Indian Ocean Trade Network. In the 7th 12th centuries, both the silk road and Indian ocean trade route
had affected east and south Asia by the introduction of religions such as Buddhism changing
government forms and altering the belief systems of society and changing how individuals live their
daily lives, however differences were present in the impact that these routes had on daily lives, such as
the Indian Ocean Trade Route giving rise to an entire new culture in Africa known as the Swahili and
leading to the innovation of the sailing boat known as the Dhow, and the silk road led to the
transmission of religion and resources throughout Eurasia and it led to utilization of caravans and
animals as a means of trade. The Indian Ocean Trade Network, as well as the silk road had aided in
cultural diffusion, and the transmission of ideas, however these routes were different in the way in
which they were traversed and what ideas were specifically transmitted. The Indian Ocean Trade route

Hot Chocolate Cookies Essay
The name of the recipe I will be making is Mexican hot chocolate cookies. The reason I chose
Mexican hot chocolate cookies is I find this cookie super unique in taste and texture compared to other
cookies. It is fairly simple to make. I learned how to make these cookies with my mother. It was not
for a special occasion, we just wanted to try a new recipe. Our family often packages the cookies,
three per bag, to take to the military base and distribute to the security forces folks on duty. They
really appreciate being thought of. They often tease my mother saying it has been too long since she
brought them by. There are stories of people hiding them from their spouse or family members. The
recipe originally appeared on Martha Stewart s website. My mother made some changes to the recipe
along the way. It is best to gather all of the ingredients and equipment before you begin to prepare the
recipe. One important tip is to set the butter on the counter for twenty minutes before starting the
recipe. We learned quickly that the temperature of the butter plays a big role in how the cookies turn
out. Consequently, if the butter is too warm the cookies spread out while baking. We determined that
somewhere between twenty and thirty minutes is best. The equipment needed for this recipe is:
Equipment: parchment paper, a medium size bowl, a large bowl, a hand mixer or stand mixer, mixing
spoon, measuring spoons, sifter, spatula, cookie scoop, fork and two cookie sheets. The

Examples Of Efficient Market Hypothesis
1. Efficient Market Hypothesis The concept and its assumptions What is Efficient Market Hypothesis?
Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) which published in Eugene Fama s 1965 paper Random Walks In
Stock Market Prices . It is based on a random walk theory which earliest examined by Maurice
Kendall in 1953, he concluded that the movement of security prices on the security market was
random. (Kendall, 1953) An efficient market is defined as a market where there are large numbers of
rational, profit maximizers actively competing, with each trying to predict future market values of
individual securities, and where important current information is almost freely available to all
participants. In an efficient market, competition among the many intelligent participants leads to a
situation where, at any point in time, actual prices of individual securities already reflect the effects of
information based both on events that have already occurred and on events which, as of now, the
market expects to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the information generally comes rapidly, securities price change randomly. (Fama, 1970) Existing
conditions of the Efficient Market Fama (1970) identified three sufficient conditions of the efficient
market: (1) No transactions cost when buying or selling securities (2) All available information is
costlessly and available to all investors. (3) All investors are rational that accept the current prices and
future prices of the securities. Three Assumptions of Efficient Capital Market There are three
assumptions imply an efficient market include: an efficient market requires that a large number of
profit maximizing investors analyze and value securities, all of them are independent to the others.

Perceived service quality as customer based performances measure is also known as SERVQUAL
Model. This study empirically examines organizational barriers to delivering high quality service
performance as measured by customer perceptions and expectations. Using the extended service
quality model developed by Zeithaml, Berry, and Parasuraman (Journal of Marketing, 52, 35 48) as a
conceptual framework, five specific propositions implied by the model and by earlier studies
contributing to its development were tested. Such testing required a complex research design
involving five service companies as well as samples of customers, contact employees, and managers
from each company. The results have

Questions On Private Practice
Dilemma:
In the season 2 premier of Private Practice, we are introduced to a couple that have a sick son who was
dying of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. They had a partial match donor to help save the son life but
unfortunately the partial match donor was found to have pneumonia. Because the doctors thought the
son had a donor they started to prepare him for the transplant by stripping his immune system and
unless he received the transplant within a week he would die. The parents had already become
pregnant with a genetic match to their son, so that they could use the baby s umbilical cord blood in
the future. The wife was 27 weeks pregnant when she and her husband request that Doctor Addison
induce her delivery to preform a C section this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If doctor Addison does this she can control how the C section will work and she can have different
teams ready, one team to help with the umbilical cord transplant for the son, another team ready to
care for the premature baby, and one team to help the mother and finish the C section. This would
allow for the son to receive the transplant, saving his life. But the premature baby must be carefully
cared since the chance of dying is high, she would need to be monitored and forced to stay in the
hospital for quite some time till fully development or approval from doctors.
Perspective number 2:
Another perspective for this case is that Doctor Addison does not preform the C section. The sick son
would be placed back on the transplant list with the hope that they could find another donor before the
son dies. But most likely the son would die since he only had a week left to live. Although, this
wouldn t place the unborn baby at risk for complications due to being born premature. The women
was 6 months pregnant and the doctors were not concern of any risk, only increasing the likeness of
the couple having a healthy baby being born.
Perspective number 3:
Another possible perspective is for the mother carrying the baby to endure her own delivery such as
by breaking her own water. This puts the mother at risk because she has to induce her own delivery
without the knowledge of the proper way to

Abstract:
MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) is getting popularity in not only in Universities worldwide but
also in the people who want to enrich their skill sets. As the demand grows, different MOOC websites
are taking appropriate action to provide more dynamic environment. They are using NoSQL to
maintain the data. Most of the MOOC websites using Document type NoSQL databases to manage
videos, forums and assignments. But when it comes to decide which NoSQL database should be
implemented there are many choices like MongoDB, CouchDB, ClusterPoint etc. and consequently a
question arises why majority of MOOC websites are using MongoDB instead of CouchDB which is
also a NoSQL document oriented database? In the following paper it will be more clear which
database MongoDB or CouchDB in the present time is more suitable to use for a MOOC website.

Blues for Mister Charlie
The play Blues for Mister Charlie, of James Baldwin was a successful theatrical play. It has been
famous because of the plot s capturing scheme and because of its playwrights clever ways of stating
everyday issues in sharp and clever manner. According to Mark Blankenships, some plays grapple
with history; however some feel like history themselves. Blues for Mister Charlie, a 1964 drama by
James Baldwin, is a part of history replayed as clearly and vividly as possible. The play was inspired
by the execution of Emmett Till, an African American boy whose white attackers went free without
prosecution; the powerful subject has been motivated by the documentary The Untold Story of
Emmett Louis Till. Baldwin, however, takes a simple story and ... Show more content on

To make a brief idea about the story, Blues for Mister Charlie is based on the case of Emmett Till, a
young black man who was killed in Mississippi in 1955 for whistling at a white woman. The murderer
was subsequently found not guilty. The play is cyclical in its structure; which means that it opens and
closes with the killing of Richard while occasionally giving a series of flashbacks to clarify the
reasons for Richard s death. This structure critics believe allows a lot of room for a focus on issues
such as race, discrimination, and Christianity. From very early in the play a person can understand
what is on Mr. Baldwin s mind. For there he tells you that his play is dedicated to the memory of
Medgar Evers, and his widow and his children, and to the memory of the dead children of
Birmingham. The title also brings the person watching up to date of Mr. Baldwin s standpoint. Mister
Charlie is the phrase the Negro uses for the white man. Baldwin s play tells the story for white man s
issues with morality as well as for Negro s irritation, belittlement, and misery; closer to the end of the
play he makes this point artistically with a cutting sharpness. The dignified Rev. Meridian Henry,
pastor of the Negro church in a small Southern town, goes on to raise the question to the one decent
white man named Parnell: Have they been friends because Parnell thinks of Meridian as his favorite
Uncle Tom? And then the minister warns that truth must be faced for the white man s

The Movie A Real Hero
When Driver meets his neighbor Irene that emotionless face from the beginning of the film softens up
a little. In a small scene where Driver looks out the window of his apartment we see Irene and her son
in the distance. So we don t get the typical close up of the actors. This highlighted the Driver longing
to be in a normal world and just how far away from that he felt. Later in the film when Irene and her
son goes to the auto body shop where Driver works you can see his face light up like a little boy with
a crush. He actually smiles. When Driver gives them a ride we hear what is known to be the film s
main theme. A Real Hero , a song with lyrics telling the tale of a man standing up for what s right even

There is one scene when Driver is sitting in a couch with Irene s son Benicio watching the television
and they share a conversation. Typically it would just be filler to move the story along, but being that
this film is very meticulous every scene matters and means something that add to the bigger picture of
the story. In the scene Driver asks Benicio Is he a bad guy? In which Benicio responds Yeah. Driver
asks him How can you tell? Benicio responds Cause he s a shark. Driver then asks There s no good
sharks? In which Benicio responds No. I mean just look at him? Does he look like a good guy to you?
The way I interpreted that conversation as being in reference to Driver himself. He s a shark. He s a
bad guy. He wants to know if there are any good sharks and when Benicio thinks otherwise he gets the
look as if reality slapped him in the face.
That realisation continues into the next scene when Driver learns that Irene s husband is coming home
from prision. His future that was starting to look bright then begins to fall apart. When Standard is
released from prison they have a welcome home party where he thanks Irene for waiting for him. At
the same time Driver is in his apartment working on a car part. This is where the soundtrack that is
used enhances what Driver is feeling throughout the whole scene. While he is working on the car part

She sees Clay, who was the only person on the subway at the time, looking at her through the window.
She takes that as a seductive invitation and boards the subway. She approaches him and is very
forward with him as they converse and eat apples. During their conversation, Lula attempts to be
alluring, mysterious, and at times, standoffish.
After becoming more acquainted with one another, Clay realizes other passengers have boarded. He
becomes uncomfortable and less intimate with Lula. Eventually, Lula s actions become more peculiar
to Clay. She begins offending and embarrassing him. He chases her around the subway train, then
snaps, yelling and cursing. As he takes his leave, Lula stabs him and several male passengers carry his
corpse away.
Since Dutchman was written in 1963, the play was heavily influenced by the Civil Rights Movement
and racism is a reoccurring theme. Baraka lived with a white woman in a predominately Caucasian
community, and he d felt as though he was not being true to himself. That was where he got the
inspiration for Clay s character. It is often pointed out in the film by Lula that Clay is acting like a
white man and is pretensions for that. She sees him as a stereotype, constantly commenting I know the
type (Dutchman). I assume she doesn t actually knows the type, but instead she know the stereotypes
associated with African American male. Through this knowledge, she is able guess certain details of
Clay s life. She constantly

Accommodations Project
The disability group that I would like to focus on for my Accommodations Project is blindness and
low vision. According to the textbook, the statutory definition of blindness is based on visual acuity
and field of vision. Visual acuity is the ability to clearly distinguish forms or discriminate details at a
specified distance (Heward 345). For example, Mary is able to see the words on the projection screen
from her desk and she can see it clearly. Having 20/20 vision does not mean that a person has perfect
vision it simply means that they can see at a distance of 20 feet. The American Foundation for the
Blind defines being legally blind as having vision no better than 20/200 corrected vision in the better
eye, or a visual field not extending beyond 20 degrees in the better eye, or a visual efficiency of no
more than 20 percent. The legal refers to a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many instructional strategies that are effective in teaching students who are blind or that
have low vision. One example of an instructional strategy would be seating the student in the front of
the classroom so that they can hear the teacher s instructions clearly (Allan). A student that is blind is
unable to see written instructions that are on a chalkboard so the teacher will have to read the
instructions aloud. Another example would be to avoid leaving doors and drawers ajar or chairs out
from under tables and desks (Allan). If there are items in the walkway of a student that is blind they
could potentially fall and get hurt which is why it is also important for the teacher to keep from
rearranging the classroom. If the teacher rearranges the classroom they should inform the student that
they have done so. The two examples that I provided are effective because they help the student be

Molar Concentration Lab Report
Introduction:
In 1909 S.P.L. Sorensen published a paper in Biochem Z in which he discussed the effect of H1+ ions
on the activity of enzymes. In the paper he invented the term pH to describe this effect and defined it
as the log[H1+ ]. In 1924 Sorensen realized that the pH of a solution is a function of the quot;activity
quot; of the H1+ ion not the concentration and published a second paper on the subject. A better
definition would be pH= log[aH1+ ], where aH1+ denotes the activity of the H1+ ion. The activity of
an ion is a function of many variables of which concentration is one. It is unfortunate that chemistry
texts use a definition for pH that has been obsolete for over 50 years.

Francis Galton Eugenics
Eugenics involves applying principles of genetics and heredity for the purpose of improving the
human race. The term eugenics was first invented by Francis Galton in the late 1800 s. Francis Galton
was an English intellectual whose body of work spanned many fields, including statistics, psychology,
meteorology and genetics (Shultz 114 116). Francis Galton was also a half cousin of Charles Darwin.
Francis Galton s first academic foray into eugenics analyzed the characteristics, such as superior
intelligence, of England s upper classes and concluded they were hereditary; therefore, desirable traits

Deviance in Hockey
Violence in ice hockey has been an identifying staple in the sport since the first hockey leagues
formed in the mid 1880 s, (Ice Hockey Origins, Growth and Changes in the Game). Since the modern
era of hockey, and the creation of the Stanley Cup, hockey has been viewed as one of the most violent
sports in western civilization. Clarence Campbell, former NHL President has even said that [w]ithout
violence, there would be no such thing as hockey, (Coakley). To an extent hockey is unmatched in
illegal assaults by any other sport, in both amateur and professional leagues, (Colburn). This does not
mean that the contact in other sports is not as intense as hockey, for example rugby and football are
both very violent sports, but this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This institutionalization created a different atmosphere around the entire world of sport.
Sports became something that men and women could participate in as well as small children. Because
of this universalization of sport it began to attract the attention of everyone, rather than just the
participants. With a new audience came a new set of views and interpretations of what sports were and
most sports fit into this new set of norms, and if not they adapted to fit into them. Hockey, however,
did not conform to these new norms.
Violence, fistfights specifically, in hockey are viewed as deviant because; that very type of violence is
statistically rare in institutionalized sports and it is harmful to individuals, the sport of hockey, and
society as a whole. This violence also violates the norms that society has created for competitive sport.
Because of these harms, the rarity of such violence in sports, and the violation of the norms, a negative
societal reaction forms.
One of the ways that an act can contract a deviant label is by its statistical rarity, (Bereska). Violence,
such as the fistfights seen in hockey, is a statistical rarity. Statistical rarity in this sense means that the
type of violence seen in hockey, and the volume that it is seen in hockey, is unheard of in any

1. Internet addiction is any online related, compulsive behavior that interferes with normal living.
2. One example found in the article of dangerous behavior caused by internet addiction is of a kid

who cared more about their online baby that forgot to take care of their living baby which ended up
dying.

general public in order to inform them about internet addiction.
3. I chose paragraph 6 as is really detailed with statistics of when it first started compared to today and
also he includes professional analysis. This paragraph does support the thesis because it states there is
a percentage addicted to the internet.
Thinking Critically about the Reading

they are real and can be proven not made information.
2. The authors tone in the essay is informative and in a way worried about internet addiction. I
captured my attention in then reading because it made me realized there is a problem with this

The Public Facilities Privacy Security Act
In March 2016, a bathroom bill, entitled the Public Facilities Privacy Security Act was introduced in
North Carolina and signed into law by Governor Pat McCrory. Commonly referred to as HB2, or
House Bill 2, this law states that within government buildings, like schools, an individual must use the
restroom or changing facility that matches the sex listed on their birth certificate. For transgender
individuals, this presents a problem, as their birth sex and the gender with which they identify do not
match. Several other states, including South Dakota, Florida, Tennessee, and Wisconsin have

Spokespeople for other North Carolina police departments have made similar statements (Michaels).
Even if such a thing were plausible, how would one determine whether or not to allow a particular
person into the restroom?
Consider, for a moment, people who are gender non conforming. These individuals are comfortable
with their biological sex, male or female, but choose to present themselves in a way that is not typical
of or expected for their gender. For example, a female may shirk feminine gender roles and dress in a
way that is considered masculine. Now imagine a scenario in which such an individual wants to use
the women s restroom. They do not look as is expected for a female, but they are female nonetheless.
Would a law enforcement officer request they present some form of ID or even their birth certificate?
Would there be someone on standby to examine bathroom goer s genitals, or check their DNA to
ensure they have the correct chromosomes? On the other hand, there are many cases in which a
transgender person is virtually indistinguishable from a non transgender person, and this says nothing
of intersex people who fall outside of the sex binary. The fact of the matter is that gender and sex are
often blurred lines. In those cases, the only way to be certain the person entering the restroom was of
the proper sex would be through the use of the extreme and

Why Did Italy Become A Member Of The Triple Entente
In 1915 Italy and Austria engaged in a gruesome war in one of the most unique and challenging
battlefields the tops of the Dolomite mountain range. The two countries were fighting to gain control
of the Trentino and South Tyrol areas. Austria was allied with Germany, in an alliance called the Dual
Alliance. Previously, Italy was also allied with these two countries, but when the Triple Alliance
agreement ended just before WW1, Italy decided to remain neutral. Then, in 1915 Italy joined the
Triple Entente which included England, France, and Russia, to fight against the Dual Alliance. One of

Marketing Of Branding And Marketing
Introduction
Branding and marketing is the most important part in the business. Marketing goods correctly can take
time and a lot of work. If the goods are marketed the wrong way it will affect the brand tremendously.
Marketing works hand to hand with brand, without one another the business wont exist. Branding
gives a great meaning to the business and people remember your business name by branding. This is
why, it is important to have and build a great brand name. You can have a great brand name and
reputation, but it takes only one unhappy customer to ruin you and your brand name. Companies build
brands using memorable names, symbols such as logos and other images and phrases. Catchy slogans,
for instance, sometimes become strongly connected to your brand so that people easily recall the
brand from hearing the slogan (Branding Other Marketing Concepts).

The Influence of Paul the Apostle
Paul the Apostle is considered to be the most influential of the early members of the Christian church,
along with Simon Peter and James the Just. Saint Paul is said to have been born around AD 5, and
considered to have died about AD67, though the Bible does not record his death specifically. The
epistles written by Paul to the churches were plainly and sharply worded. Paul s writings make up a
good portion of the New Testament and demonstrate his position of prominence as an apostle of the
early Church. Saint Paul was a significant contributor to the spreading of the Gospel through the early
Christian communities, particularly through his Epistles, that were established across the Roman
Empire. Paul s letters make up some of the earliest of Christian documents and, as such, they are a
window into early Christianity, with all of its controversies and unpolished beliefs. The authoritative
rule of the New Testament is considered to derive from Saint Paul s works Before his conversion, Paul
used the name Saul and he was engaged in the persecution of Jesus early disciples in the area around
Jerusalem. In the book of Acts, the narrative tells about Saul traveling from Jerusalem to Damascus
when he encountered the resurrected Jesus in a great light that blinded him for three days, until
Ananias of Damascus restored his sight. Following that powerful experience, Paul began his preaching
about Jesus of Nazareth as the Son of God and the Jewish Messiah. Saint Paul s influence

Philosophy of Ethics Essay
The word ethics comes from Greek ethikas meaning character. Today, we use ethics to describe the
normative standard of behavior. The history of philosophical ethics has been broken up into five
rational methods: Virtue, Traditional, Modern, and Post Modern Ethics. Within these periods, the
philosophy of ethics changed along with the changes being made within society. The first rational
method is Virtue Ethics. The major philosophers during this period were materialists such as Plato,
Aristotle, Epicurus, and Plutarch. Greek were concerned with finding eudaimonia meaning the good

One of the last major philosophers of Virtue Ethics was Plutarch who advocated virtue but disagreed
with Epicurus because he believed there was no true pleasure. At this same time, between 400 B.C. 40
B.C. Stoic philosophers such Cicero, who combined the philosophies of Aristotle and Plato, developed
his idea on ethics and how everyone has a duty and should imitate virtue for others. He said duty has
two points which are to achieve the Supreme Good, and follow the rules for daily living. Cicero was a
strong believer in rationality incorporated Plato s Cardinal Virtues into his three rules of conduct:
master desires through reason, know true value of goals and be moderate in actions and lifestyle.
Following Virtue Ethics, a major shift occurred in thinking. The philosophers of Virtue Ethics were
materialists and believed we only have what we have and after death, we have nothing. Traditional
Ethics shifted the focus on religion once it began to spread. Also known as Biblical Ethics,
philosophers started a systematic study of Biblical themes and principles surrounding ethics and
morality. St. Augustine was trained as a philosopher and combines his understanding of the Bible to
ethics by answering the same question as Plato and Aristotle did, What is the highest good? He
answered this question with happiness just like Aristotle but since Aristotle

Ethical Failures Of A Professional Work Environment
Jerry Mason, senior vice president and general manager at Morton Thiokol, and Morton Thiokol were

to state something contrary to what he stood by. When someone s self interest and pride gets in the
way of engineering, it can neglect the welfare of the public, and cause them harm. This case study
highlights many irresponsible, and ethical failures in a professional work environment. Jerry Mason
failed to abide by the following impediments for responsible action; self interest, ignorance, and group

people, like Jerry Mason, become self interested and forget that at the core of engineering, lies the
responsibility to act with the public s welfare in mind, above all else. The Challenger incident shows
us how Jerry Mason acts contrary to the standards that the public expects professionals engineers to

Methotrexate And Its Effect On Sarcoidosis Essay
Methotrexate and its effect on sarcoidosis Amanda Roll University of Cincinnati Cronstein, B, Eberle,
M, Gruber, H, Levin, R (1991). Methotrexate inhibits neutrophil function by stimulating adenosine
release from connective tissue cells. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 88, 2441
2445. Abstract Sarcoidosis is a potentially chronic inflammatory disease/disorder that causes abnormal
tissue clusters in various parts of the body. Depending on where they form, they can interrupt or
prevent function of that specific part of the body. They can form in multiple areas. Its effects also
depend on the person, as some people are asymptomatic. Others use medications, like corticosteroids,
to treat their symptoms. However, methotrexate is not a corticosteroid, but can be used to treat the
symptoms of sarcoidosis; because of this, it is referred to as a steroid sparing agent. Both types of
medications can be used together in therapy. Methotrexate acts to increase the release of adenosine in
the body to inhibit the cell s ability to induce tissue damage, preventing the autoimmune characteristic
of this disease. Knowing this, we re one step closer to determining what causes the development of
sarcoidosis, and can further investigate ways to treat it. Discovering another form of treatment could
possibly help prevent innocent patients from experiencing some dangers and side effects methotrexate
causes, like hepatotoxicity. Introduction Sarcoidosis is

access to the method of palliative care, instead we are saying that those wishing to request this should

can access these services, and according to Radbruch, In contrast to the legal requirements in

Analysis of ‘Patterns’ Written by Amy Lowell Essay
Amy Lowell is an American imagist poet who uses descriptive language to create specific images in a
readers mind. Set in the Victorian era (1800 s,) the dramatic monologue Patterns explores the
restrictions of unmarried women in society and the desire for freedom. My view of these issues is that
of a feminist reader living in a democratic modern day society, where men and women live in a state
of equality and have the right to express their opinions. A feminist reading focuses on the specific
treatment of women. Through Lowell s wondrous use of the poetic techniques, primarily visual

This develops the idea that her future with this man as a married woman provided a stable lifestyle
where she would not have to live by the rigid patterns of society, reinforcing a modern day feminist
reader s view of the expectations and restrictions placed on unmarried women during the Victorian
era.
There is a distinct contrast between appearance and reality, which works to reinforce the idea of
confining individualistic behaviours to retain the pattern of society. In stanza two, she says that
tripping by in high heeled, ribboned shoes/ (there is) not a softness anywhere about (her) (lines 16 and
17) when she s wearing only whalebone and brocade (line 18.) The term whalebone refers to a
whalebone corset, which is a very hard material that is restrictive to movement. By describing her
actions as tripping, a modern day feminist reader is reinforced that she is not coping in her current
lifestyle where she is limited to living in a strict manner. In the next stanza, she says that underneath
(her) stiffened gown/ Is the softness of a woman (lines 32 and 33.) This develops the idea that the way
she dresses is a deceiving appearance, because she is not as stiff and stable on the inside as she comes
across on the outside. Deep down she is soft and sad, in mourning of the loss of her lover, yet she
cannot express these emotions due to the expectations and restrictions of women during the Victorian
era.

The Constitution and the Separation of Powers
One of the earliest ideas of separating powers came in the 1600 s and is evidenced by the idea that the
parliament then is what we would consider today as being the Legislative branch of government since
it was in charge of taxes. To be a king in those days would be similar to the Executive branch, as the
king conducted wars and enforced the law. However, credit is often given to Baron de Montesquieu, a
French philosopher. According to the authors of our text book, John Locke initially desired there to be
to branches of government, a legislative branch to create the laws and an executive branch to enforce
the laws. Montesquieu then supplemented Locke s idea by adding a judiciary branch to resolve
conflicts that the two branches by incur.
When written, the Constitution laid out the basis for the separation of powers. In order to prevent any
one branch of having complete control and power, each of the branches of government has certain
powers and responsibilities in order to keep each other from exerting too much power. This is known
as checks and balances.
The first branch of government we will be looking at is the legislative branch. The legislative branch
of government is responsible for making and passing laws and is more commonly known as Congress.
Keeping in the nature of checks and balances, Congress has been granted certain powers to make sure
that the judiciary branch and the executive branches do not abuse their power.

Speeches have been an effective way for someone to share their thoughts and opinions about topics for
years. Have they continued to be successful due to changes in the way that they are given, or is it
because modern day orators have continued to use some of the same speech techniques? To determine
the answer, a comparison of an old political speech to a contemporary political speech would be
required. In both speeches, Speech in the Virginia Convention and We are not Afraid, both Patrick
Henry and Hillary Clinton use allusion, restatement, and parallelism to effectively state their views. In
their speeches, both Patrick Henry and Hillary Clinton use allusion. Henry alludes to The Odyssey in
the line, We are apt to shut our eyes against a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One example of Henry doing so is found when he is talking about the strength of his country. He says,
They tell us that we are weak. But when shall we be stronger (Henry 102)? He is restating the point
that the time for a revolution in America is now. He wants his audience to know how much hope,
determination, and confidence he has in the future America because he believes that they are strong
enough to win the revolution. Unlike Henry, Clinton does not use as much restatement in her speech.
Nonetheless, an example can be found in her speech when she says, I m not here to repeal the 2nd
Amendment. I m not here to take away your guns (Clinton). She is reiterating her belief of making
strict regulations on gun control to ensure the safety of Americans. She wants it to be known that her
motive is not to unarm Americans, which would infringe on the second constitutional amendment.
Although both Henry and Clinton use restatement, Henry does a more effective job of emotionally
moving his audience. He is putting faith into them, hoping that they will become motivated. On the
contrary, Clinton is less effective in her form of restatement; she does not use restatement to motivate
her audience like

The Key To Justin Timberlake s Article Success Is Just...
Success Beyond the Money As college students, we all want to be successful in the major we chose.
There is no right or wrong definition of success, simply because it varies. In Redefining Success for a
College Bound Child, Hope Perlman argues that parents should let their children be more independent
with the decisions they make. She lets her daughter pave the way for her own success by letting her
chose her courses in high school. Perlman states, I can t understand why I obsess over the super
successful, when what is truly important is for each of us to find a thing we feel fulfilled doing, and
that thing may be a very quiet, private thing. (2) In the past, success was based upon how wealthy a
person was, the more money someone had the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many people equate success with money and money with happiness, but money ruins people. Having
a mansion, a nice car, and material things does not mean that person is living a happy life. Many
successful people, such as celebrities have this façade built up that their life is awesome because of all
the money they have. Like the saying says, Money can t buy you happiness which has been shown
through many celebrities. Celebrities who have committed suicide and overdosed on drugs are the
perfect examples of people who have a great life but they let the fame overwhelm them. While this is
all true, there are multiple ways this statement can be disproven. For example, Justin Timberlake who
uses his money for the best things possible for himself and others around

Sexism In Sports
Sexism in Sports Sexism limits our country. In a world where sexism still exists, women face
challenges every day as they choose to embark in athletic activities. Even with the efforts of Title IX,
which was established in 1972, there is not equality in sports for men and women. Sexism is real with
stereotypes and discrimination on the basis of sex. Even with the high level of success reached by
numerous female athletes of many different sports, male athletes always seem to have the upper hand.
Whether it is pay, media, support, gear, or playing grounds, one sex always has the better of the two.
Male athletes dominate a field that truly is shared by both sexes. What if we treated male athletes the
way we treat female athletes? That is a world hard to imagine, and honestly, it shouldn t be. Through
female athletes sharing their stories of unfair treatment and pay, sexism and generations of inequality
in sports can be overcome. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 states, No person in the
United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or
be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial
assistance. The impact of Title IX on the lives of so many girls is immeasurable. It has created
opportunities for women, where opportunities did not use to exist. Unfortunately, it has not completely
eradicated sexism. Women in many professional sports, which are also played by

Kid Cudi Meaning
The possibility of not having the chance to experience life s timeless moments all over again is
disappointing; therefore, it is an individual s job to seize every one of them, carpe diem. In 2009, the
Hip Hop artist Kid Cudi wrote a song expressing a lifestyle of seizing life s moments called The
Pursuit of Happiness. He mentions late nights consisting of parties and drugs in the search for
happiness that everyone desires. The song talks about how the journey to happiness can develop into a
lifestyle of substance abuse, apprehension, and regrets even though happiness is possibly at the end.
Though it deteriorates them as a whole the mindset as quoting Kid Cudi is, fuck that (Kid Cudi, n.d.).
Through Kid Cudi s music arrangement, style of writing, and retable message listener s are taken on a

That s why immediately after asking a question he answers it for the listeners, because they haven t
experienced his happiness. In the last two lines of the second verse, he is saying while others are
laying awake worrying about their struggles, he is busy drinking his sorrows away. On another hand,
The Pursuit of Happiness has less thrilling lyrics and it focuses on achieving happiness but the journey
may not be as glamorous as intended. There are aspects of life that are not deceitful, but it is worth it
in the long run. The chorus explains this perfectly by stating: I m in the pursuit of happiness and I

Essay about The Defender of the Faith
The Defender of the Faith
In Philip Roth s, Defender of the Faith , Sergeant Nathan Marx is the Defender of whom the title
speaks. Reluctant at first, Marx defended his faith on two fronts, one across the sea in Europe and the
second in the United States. The battle in the states was of a different type. Marx learned what it was
like to defend his and the faith of his fellow Jews against prejudice and abuse by those who waged the
war. Marx is not an orthodox Jew. He does not follow the doctrine as most of those in his religion
would and did not realize until asked by Grossbart that he was still religious. Though Grossbart
showed him he was not like others, Grossbart was not the central antagonism, The war was.
It was not that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marx was concerned that Grossbart was right and that those who wanted to attend the service should
have the chance to attend.
Marx confronted Captain Barrett on the matter, who only confirmed Grossbart s case by showing he
was prejudice. Captain Barrett told Marx he d fight side by side with a nigger if the fella proved to me
he was a man. (p.119) Marx was not pleased with the captain s outlook, and even less pleased when
the captain told him he should leave that stuff to the Chaplain. (p.119) Marx took it upon himself that
the soldiers who wanted to attend church should be allowed and ordered his C.Q. to announce Jewish
personnel who want to attend services this evening are to fall out in front of the orderly room, (p.120)
and then added By order of Captain Barrett. Marx had won that battle.
Marx, after a few exploits of Grossbart, such as getting a weekend pass to attend a religious dinner a
month late and then not attending that dinner, understood that he was being played the fool. Grossbart
did not want special privileges for his fellow Jewish soldiers, yet only wanted a free ride in the army.
This came to Marx when Grossbart asked if Marx could do something about Grossbart s being
shipped off to war in the pacific. Grossbart was

Concept Of Absolute Purchasing Power Parity
Introduction and significance of the research question
Does the concept absolute purchasing power parity (PPP) stay true that the goods in one country
should cost the same in another country after implying the exchange rates? (For example, the pound
cost of imported goods should be the same as the price of the same goods being sold in the UK).
Absolute purchasing power parity is a concept with the assumption of goods having the same price
after exchange rates between countries. However, I want to find out if this is always true or not since it
plays an important role that differentiates from the relative purchasing power parity . There is an
assumption that if there are any deviations in the price in one of the two countries, then the exchange
rate and the relative prices should adjust to accommodate, equating to the level where the basket of
goods have the same price in these two countries (Moffatt, 2014).
The data and methodology
I will be comparing exchange rates between two countries, these are the UK (£) and the USA ($) to
see if the changes are enough to make any differences or whether just negligible. I will select data
from the year 1980 to 2015 in yearly intervals. Comparing each year with the previous year. These
will be compared using Excel and Minitab and displayed as a simple linear regression model.
The absolute PPP should mean that ERt = ERt 1 + u.
I will be using the formula ERt = a0 +bERt 1 + u = 0 and comparing that with the traditional ef = a0 +

Born To Run Chapter Summary
The book Born to Run is an informative yet also thrilling account of the author s investigation into the
primary cause of running injuries. The book begins with the author investigating a rumour of an
ancient tribe in Mexico known as the Tarahumara who live in the Copper Canyons upon the same
lifestyle and traditions as they did hundreds, if not, thousands of years ago. It was said that the
Tarahumara were a group of superathletes that have the ability to run for periods of up to 400 miles,
barefoot or in sandals, without rest while avoiding injury in the process. Obviously, for one pursuing
the avoidance of running related injuries, this was an intriguing thought for author Christopher
McDougall; therefore the first chapter consists of him following a lead in Mexico by tracking down a
man known as Caballo Blanco. Multiple rumours existed of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Their whole culture is based upon a totally modest and non violent ideology. For example, at the end
of an ultra marathon when many of the runners in past races are completely miserable and need pacers
to keep going. But, on record pace, the Tarahumara runners came by the aid station and surprised all
the volunteers in how happy they were. All the Tarahumara runners were smiling and looking as
though they were having the time of their lives. So, after this information was presented, the author
came back to their meeting with Arnulfo. This meeting, however, was very brief as to the fact that the
Salvador and the author had forgotten certain key pieces of Tarahumara modesty and interaction
making it so that, after feeding them and providing some water, Arnulfo ran off. So then, following
some interaction with Salvador, the author is lead to find Caballo Blanco and back to where the story
began. The two then devise a plan to gather all the greatest ultrarunners of the 21st century to race
against the Tarahumara in

Preparation of Pure Diphenyl
Experiment 2 Date: 24 January 2006
Title : Crystallization of a Crude Sample
Objective : Preparation of pure diphenyl via crystallization of crude diphenyl dissolved in ethanol.
Structural Formula of Organic Substances Involved :
Diphenyl Ethanol
Apparatus : Round bottom flask (100 mL), measuring cylinder (50 mL), conical flask (50 mL), filter
flask, beaker (100 mL), stemless glass funnel, Hirsch funnel, capillary tube, long glass tube, watch
glass, glass vial, water condenser, retort stand, retort clamps, spatula, cork stand, fluted filter paper,
filter paper for Hirsch funnel, electronic weigh, electrothermal heater, oven, aspirator, electrothermal
device to determine melting point.
Chemicals : Crude ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The condenser also functions to maintain the temperature throughout the heating process and thereby
maximizing the accuracy of the experimental results. The addition of boiling chips in the heating
process to dissolve the diphenyl serves to minimize the possibility of the occurrence of bumping, i.e.
sudden explosive boiling whereby large bubbles erupt from the heated solution. Instead, a steady
stream of small air bubbles is produced with the addition of the chips.
Subsequently after complete dissolving of the crude diphenyl, an additional 15 mL of ethanol is added
to ensure that all the crude diphenyl is dissolved. A small amount of decolourising charcoal is added to
the solution mixture. The decolourising charcoal serves to remove any impurities in the mixture, by
adsorbing substances responsible for colouration of the solution on its surface via its activated
properties. A small amount is used as the desired product may be adsorbed as well if a large amount is
used instead.
The mixture is filtered via a preheated stemless glass funnel immediately after boiling for 10 15
minutes. This is to prevent any early crystallization of the mixture since its crystallization temperature
is quite low. The use of preheated apparatus for filtration is also to minimize premature crystallization
of the mixture. Filtration of the mixture while it is still hot is to

  • 2. Commentary on Alphonso Lingis’s article, The World as a... Commentary on Alphonso Lingis s article, The World as a Whole Martin Heidegger s work in Being and Time elucidated a phenomenological ontology in which death and anxiety function as the imminent possibility of impossibility, circumscribing Dasein and inscribing weight to Dasein s temporal existence. He constructs an individual whose ontological whole is made of three fundamental elements that function as a whole; understanding, feeling and action. This being, Dasein (translated as Being There), exists in the world, and Heidegger constructs Dasein s ontology as being in the world. This is the way Alphonso Lingis predicates his understanding of Heidegerrian phenomenology in an essay from Research in Phenomenology entitled The World ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Heidegger spoke of Dasein intentionally. He did not want to limit his language to that of Heidegger and speak of just the human, because the limitations this term would imply. Being and Time is a very complex work, this article does a very good job at tackling Heidegger s project, but it focuses on a few things. Lingis discusses Dasein as being constitutive of the world , Dasein is being in the world. Dasein is in the world, and dwelling is characterized as care , states Lingis. He shows us how Dasein sees the things in the world as a field of equipment for use, The practicable field, a layout of relays, is later characterized as openness. This openness is suspended in the abysses of nothingness, death. Dasein is thrown into the world, Heidegger shows us how we are born into a world which we have not constructed, which we cannot control. The Others are already there, we encounter them when we encounter their buildings, their constructions, their language. The common world precedes and makes possible the perceptual field of any individual. The language, the interpretive system of Das Man precedes and makes possible any singularizing interpretation of one s own situation. Dasein is being in the world with others. Dasein s function is projection, Dasein is temporal, and as we ve said Dasein has three facets: understanding, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. General Motors External Executive Summary The United States has been experiencing a weak economy, which has dramatically affected sales within the automotive industry. The industry as a whole has been struggling, but the U.S. companies have had the worst results. Also, the desired product mix has recently changed to more fuel efficient vehicles instead of large SUV s and trucks (S P, 2008, p.1). The following analysis will discuss in detail the external environment of the auto industry and then transition to examining the internal environment of the U.S. firm, General Motors. GM is a large and well known domestic auto manufacturer that was the leader in U.S. auto sales for many years and at one time possessed a 47.4% market share. However, GM is now more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Until now, it was hoped that the fallout from the declines in home prices would be contained, first to the sub prime market, then to broader real estate backed assets, and finally the hope was that the damage could be restricted to just the financial sector. Unfortunately, each of these barriers have been breached and combined with a broader unraveling of credit markets and a credit crunch. So, we have seen continued spillovers into other areas of the economy, including the automobile industry (New York Times). Not too long ago, the auto industry had room for small, independent manufacturers such as Saab, Jaguar and Volvo. But since the mid to late 1980 s the industry s big players have been buying up their smaller rivals (Forbes.com). The economic downturn, rising oil prices, and the cost of developing new technologies have made it much harder for new entrants to come into the industry. Therefore, new entrants do not pose a threat to the existing competitors of the automotive industry due to the economy and the large capital requirements needed in order to be successful. For example, at General Motors alone the company must raise an estimated minimum of $15 billion in new capital to stay competitive within the industry (New York Times). The new capital requirements will mostly be used to perform research and development. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Children With Developmental Disabilities During The 1960s... During the 1950s, people who had a disability had two options of housing which included living with their families or living in an institution. However, families did not receive much support since most public welfare services were used towards institutional care, such as mental hospitals and orphanages. Throughout the 1960s there were movements to deinstitutionalize, which at that time basically led to smaller institutions. The 1970s allowed for even smaller community based residential services that were typically designed for not more than 12 people that were similar in terms of age, independence, or ability. Even though different funding was available, many standards were violated in most of the institutions. Throughout the 70s there were movements to close state institutions and provide more community residential services as well as family support. During the 1980s groundwork for families was laid to expand their control of the nature of the support they received and more options were available to help out with living outside an institution. People with developmental disabilities began to gain increased support to having homes of their own during the 1990s and funded had dramatically increased to over $735 for family support programs in 1998. In 2001 the federal government began a new freedom initiative to remove barriers to community living for people of all ages with disabilities and long term illness. In 2011 the decision that the isolation of people with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Similarities Between Silk Road And Indian Ocean Trade Throughout early history, civilizations often sought to receive resources from afar to sustain their societies and keep themselves thriving, and to this end trade relations and eventually trade routes began to emerge. This aided civilizations in their discovery of foreign items that they may use to better their societies. These items traded ranged from complex technology to something as simple as nutmeg. The main trade routes that were utilized in East and South Asia were the silk road and the Indian Ocean Trade Network. In the 7th 12th centuries, both the silk road and Indian ocean trade route had affected east and south Asia by the introduction of religions such as Buddhism changing government forms and altering the belief systems of society and changing how individuals live their daily lives, however differences were present in the impact that these routes had on daily lives, such as the Indian Ocean Trade Route giving rise to an entire new culture in Africa known as the Swahili and leading to the innovation of the sailing boat known as the Dhow, and the silk road led to the transmission of religion and resources throughout Eurasia and it led to utilization of caravans and animals as a means of trade. The Indian Ocean Trade Network, as well as the silk road had aided in cultural diffusion, and the transmission of ideas, however these routes were different in the way in which they were traversed and what ideas were specifically transmitted. • 6. Hot Chocolate Cookies Essay The name of the recipe I will be making is Mexican hot chocolate cookies. The reason I chose Mexican hot chocolate cookies is I find this cookie super unique in taste and texture compared to other cookies. It is fairly simple to make. I learned how to make these cookies with my mother. It was not for a special occasion, we just wanted to try a new recipe. Our family often packages the cookies, three per bag, to take to the military base and distribute to the security forces folks on duty. They really appreciate being thought of. They often tease my mother saying it has been too long since she brought them by. There are stories of people hiding them from their spouse or family members. The recipe originally appeared on Martha Stewart s website. My mother made some changes to the recipe along the way. It is best to gather all of the ingredients and equipment before you begin to prepare the recipe. One important tip is to set the butter on the counter for twenty minutes before starting the recipe. We learned quickly that the temperature of the butter plays a big role in how the cookies turn out. Consequently, if the butter is too warm the cookies spread out while baking. We determined that somewhere between twenty and thirty minutes is best. The equipment needed for this recipe is: Equipment: parchment paper, a medium size bowl, a large bowl, a hand mixer or stand mixer, mixing spoon, measuring spoons, sifter, spatula, cookie scoop, fork and two cookie sheets. Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) which published in Eugene Fama s 1965 paper Random Walks In Stock Market Prices . It is based on a random walk theory which earliest examined by Maurice Kendall in 1953, he concluded that the movement of security prices on the security market was random. (Kendall, 1953) An efficient market is defined as a market where there are large numbers of rational, profit maximizers actively competing, with each trying to predict future market values of individual securities, and where important current information is almost freely available to all participants. In an efficient market, competition among the many intelligent participants leads to a situation where, at any point in time, actual prices of individual securities already reflect the effects of information based both on events that have already occurred and on events which, as of now, the market expects to ... If doctor Addison does this she can control how the C section will work and she can have different teams ready, one team to help with the umbilical cord transplant for the son, another team ready to care for the premature baby, and one team to help the mother and finish the C section. This would allow for the son to receive the transplant, saving his life. But the premature baby must be carefully cared since the chance of dying is high, she would need to be monitored and forced to stay in the hospital for quite some time till fully development or approval from doctors. Perspective number 2: Another perspective for this case is that Doctor Addison does not preform the C section. The sick son would be placed back on the transplant list with the hope that they could find another donor before the son dies. But most likely the son would die since he only had a week left to live. Although, this wouldn t place the unborn baby at risk for complications due to being born premature. The women was 6 months pregnant and the doctors were not concern of any risk, only increasing the likeness of the couple having a healthy baby being born. It has been famous because of the plot s capturing scheme and because of its playwrights clever ways of stating everyday issues in sharp and clever manner. According to Mark Blankenships, some plays grapple with history; however some feel like history themselves. Blues for Mister Charlie, a 1964 drama by James Baldwin, is a part of history replayed as clearly and vividly as possible. The play was inspired by the execution of Emmett Till, an African American boy whose white attackers went free without prosecution; the powerful subject has been motivated by the documentary The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till. Baldwin, however, takes a simple story and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To make a brief idea about the story, Blues for Mister Charlie is based on the case of Emmett Till, a young black man who was killed in Mississippi in 1955 for whistling at a white woman. The murderer was subsequently found not guilty. The play is cyclical in its structure; which means that it opens and closes with the killing of Richard while occasionally giving a series of flashbacks to clarify the reasons for Richard s death. This structure critics believe allows a lot of room for a focus on issues such as race, discrimination, and Christianity. From very early in the play a person can understand what is on Mr. Baldwin s mind. For there he tells you that his play is dedicated to the memory of Medgar Evers, and his widow and his children, and to the memory of the dead children of Birmingham. The title also brings the person watching up to date of Mr. Baldwin s standpoint. Mister Charlie is the phrase the Negro uses for the white man. Baldwin s play tells the story for white man s issues with morality as well as for Negro s irritation, belittlement, and misery; closer to the end of the play he makes this point artistically with a cutting sharpness. The dignified Rev. Meridian Henry, pastor of the Negro church in a small Southern town, goes on to raise the question to the one decent white man named Parnell: Have they been friends because Parnell thinks of Meridian as his favorite Uncle Tom? There is one scene when Driver is sitting in a couch with Irene s son Benicio watching the television and they share a conversation. In the scene Driver asks Benicio Is he a bad guy? In which Benicio responds Yeah. Driver asks him How can you tell? Benicio responds Cause he s a shark. Driver then asks There s no good sharks? In which Benicio responds No. I mean just look at him? Does he look like a good guy to you? The way I interpreted that conversation as being in reference to Driver himself. He s a shark. He s a bad guy. He wants to know if there are any good sharks and when Benicio thinks otherwise he gets the look as if reality slapped him in the face. That realisation continues into the next scene when Driver learns that Irene s husband is coming home from prision. His future that was starting to look bright then begins to fall apart. Having 20/20 vision does not mean that a person has perfect vision it simply means that they can see at a distance of 20 feet. The American Foundation for the Blind defines being legally blind as having vision no better than 20/200 corrected vision in the better eye, or a visual field not extending beyond 20 degrees in the better eye, or a visual efficiency of no more than 20 percent. In the paper he invented the term pH to describe this effect and defined it as the log[H1+ ]. In 1924 Sorensen realized that the pH of a solution is a function of the quot;activity quot; of the H1+ ion not the concentration and published a second paper on the subject. A better definition would be pH= log[aH1+ ], where aH1+ denotes the activity of the H1+ ion. The activity of an ion is a function of many variables of which concentration is one. Francis Galton s first academic foray into eugenics analyzed the characteristics, such as superior intelligence, of England s upper classes and concluded they were hereditary; therefore, desirable traits could be passed down through generations (Shultz 116). This institutionalization created a different atmosphere around the entire world of sport. Sports became something that men and women could participate in as well as small children. Because of this universalization of sport it began to attract the attention of everyone, rather than just the participants. With a new audience came a new set of views and interpretations of what sports were and most sports fit into this new set of norms, and if not they adapted to fit into them. Hockey, however, did not conform to these new norms. Violence, fistfights specifically, in hockey are viewed as deviant because; that very type of violence is statistically rare in institutionalized sports and it is harmful to individuals, the sport of hockey, and society as a whole. Saint Paul is said to have been born around AD 5, and considered to have died about AD67, though the Bible does not record his death specifically. The epistles written by Paul to the churches were plainly and sharply worded. Paul s writings make up a good portion of the New Testament and demonstrate his position of prominence as an apostle of the early Church. Saint Paul was a significant contributor to the spreading of the Gospel through the early Christian communities, particularly through his Epistles, that were established across the Roman Empire. Methotrexate inhibits neutrophil function by stimulating adenosine release from connective tissue cells. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 88, 2441 2445. Abstract Sarcoidosis is a potentially chronic inflammatory disease/disorder that causes abnormal tissue clusters in various parts of the body. Depending on where they form, they can interrupt or prevent function of that specific part of the body. They can form in multiple areas. Its effects also depend on the person, as some people are asymptomatic. Others use medications, like corticosteroids, to treat their symptoms. However, methotrexate is not a corticosteroid, but can be used to treat the symptoms of sarcoidosis; because of this, it is referred to as a steroid sparing agent. Both types of medications can be used together in therapy. Methotrexate acts to increase the release of adenosine in the body to inhibit the cell s ability to induce tissue damage, preventing the autoimmune characteristic of this disease. Knowing this, we re one step closer to determining what causes the development of sarcoidosis, and can further investigate ways to treat it. Every one of these topics is complex and deserves careful consideration when trying to determine what is right ethically and which principles in ethics need to be considered more than others. The next concept that needs to be addressed is the slippery slope argument, Beauchamp explains that in his opinion: Judging from the past track record of our society, we should seriously take into account that the slope of the trail toward the unjustified taking of life will be so slippery and precipitous that we ought to never embark on it (Gabriel). One premise of this argument is that if a system has no clear cut guidelines, there is a lot of room for abuse of the system to occur. Another premise is that if we allow PAS society might start to value ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Analysis of ‘Patterns’ Written by Amy Lowell Essay Amy Lowell is an American imagist poet who uses descriptive language to create specific images in a readers mind. Set in the Victorian era (1800 s,) the dramatic monologue Patterns explores the restrictions of unmarried women in society and the desire for freedom. My view of these issues is that of a feminist reader living in a democratic modern day society, where men and women live in a state of equality and have the right to express their opinions. A feminist reading focuses on the specific treatment of women. Through Lowell s wondrous use of the poetic techniques, primarily visual imagery (symbolism, repetition, contrasts) and poetic voice (persona and tone,) a modern day feminist reader s negative views of the restricted lifestyles ... This develops the idea that her future with this man as a married woman provided a stable lifestyle where she would not have to live by the rigid patterns of society, reinforcing a modern day feminist reader s view of the expectations and restrictions placed on unmarried women during the Victorian era. There is a distinct contrast between appearance and reality, which works to reinforce the idea of confining individualistic behaviours to retain the pattern of society. In stanza two, she says that tripping by in high heeled, ribboned shoes/ (there is) not a softness anywhere about (her) (lines 16 and 17) when she s wearing only whalebone and brocade (line 18.) The term whalebone refers to a whalebone corset, which is a very hard material that is restrictive to movement. By describing her actions as tripping, a modern day feminist reader is reinforced that she is not coping in her current lifestyle where she is limited to living in a strict manner. In the next stanza, she says that underneath (her) stiffened gown/ Is the softness of a woman (lines 32 and 33.) This develops the idea that the way she dresses is a deceiving appearance, because she is not as stiff and stable on the inside as she comes across on the outside. Deep down she is soft and sad, in mourning of the loss of her lover, yet she cannot express these emotions due to the expectations and restrictions of women during the Victorian era. ... • 39. The Constitution and the Separation of Powers One of the earliest ideas of separating powers came in the 1600 s and is evidenced by the idea that the parliament then is what we would consider today as being the Legislative branch of government since it was in charge of taxes. To be a king in those days would be similar to the Executive branch, as the king conducted wars and enforced the law. However, credit is often given to Baron de Montesquieu, a French philosopher. According to the authors of our text book, John Locke initially desired there to be to branches of government, a legislative branch to create the laws and an executive branch to enforce the laws. Montesquieu then supplemented Locke s idea by adding a judiciary branch to resolve conflicts that the two branches by incur. When written, the Constitution laid out the basis for the separation of powers. In order to prevent any one branch of having complete control and power, each of the branches of government has certain powers and responsibilities in order to keep each other from exerting too much power. This is known as checks and balances. The first branch of government we will be looking at is the legislative branch. The legislative branch of government is responsible for making and passing laws and is more commonly known as Congress. Keeping in the nature of checks and balances, Congress has been granted certain powers to make sure that the judiciary branch and the executive branches do not abuse their power. One of the more robust powers that Congress ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Hillary Clinton Vs Odyssey Speeches have been an effective way for someone to share their thoughts and opinions about topics for years. Have they continued to be successful due to changes in the way that they are given, or is it because modern day orators have continued to use some of the same speech techniques? To determine the answer, a comparison of an old political speech to a contemporary political speech would be required. In both speeches, Speech in the Virginia Convention and We are not Afraid, both Patrick Henry and Hillary Clinton use allusion, restatement, and parallelism to effectively state their views. In their speeches, both Patrick Henry and Hillary Clinton use allusion. Henry alludes to The Odyssey in the line, We are apt to shut our eyes against a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One example of Henry doing so is found when he is talking about the strength of his country. He says, They tell us that we are weak. But when shall we be stronger (Henry 102)? He is restating the point that the time for a revolution in America is now. He wants his audience to know how much hope, determination, and confidence he has in the future America because he believes that they are strong enough to win the revolution. Unlike Henry, Clinton does not use as much restatement in her speech. Nonetheless, an example can be found in her speech when she says, I m not here to repeal the 2nd Amendment. I m not here to take away your guns (Clinton). She is reiterating her belief of making strict regulations on gun control to ensure the safety of Americans. She wants it to be known that her motive is not to unarm Americans, which would infringe on the second constitutional amendment. Although both Henry and Clinton use restatement, Henry does a more effective job of emotionally moving his audience. He is putting faith into them, hoping that they will become motivated. On the contrary, Clinton is less effective in her form of restatement; she does not use restatement to motivate her audience like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There is no right or wrong definition of success, simply because it varies. In Redefining Success for a College Bound Child, Hope Perlman argues that parents should let their children be more independent with the decisions they make. She lets her daughter pave the way for her own success by letting her chose her courses in high school. Perlman states, I can t understand why I obsess over the super successful, when what is truly important is for each of us to find a thing we feel fulfilled doing, and that thing may be a very quiet, private thing. • 42. Sexism In Sports Sexism in Sports Sexism limits our country. In a world where sexism still exists, women face challenges every day as they choose to embark in athletic activities. Even with the efforts of Title IX, which was established in 1972, there is not equality in sports for men and women. Sexism is real with stereotypes and discrimination on the basis of sex. Even with the high level of success reached by numerous female athletes of many different sports, male athletes always seem to have the upper hand. Whether it is pay, media, support, gear, or playing grounds, one sex always has the better of the two. Male athletes dominate a field that truly is shared by both sexes. What if we treated male athletes the way we treat female athletes? That is a world hard to imagine, and honestly, it shouldn t be. Through female athletes sharing their stories of unfair treatment and pay, sexism and generations of inequality in sports can be overcome. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 states, No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance. Marx learned what it was like to defend his and the faith of his fellow Jews against prejudice and abuse by those who waged the war. Marx is not an orthodox Jew. • 46. Concept Of Absolute Purchasing Power Parity Introduction and significance of the research question Does the concept absolute purchasing power parity (PPP) stay true that the goods in one country should cost the same in another country after implying the exchange rates? (For example, the pound cost of imported goods should be the same as the price of the same goods being sold in the UK). Absolute purchasing power parity is a concept with the assumption of goods having the same price after exchange rates between countries. However, I want to find out if this is always true or not since it plays an important role that differentiates from the relative purchasing power parity . There is an assumption that if there are any deviations in the price in one of the two countries, then the exchange rate and the relative prices should adjust to accommodate, equating to the level where the basket of goods have the same price in these two countries (Moffatt, 2014). The data and methodology I will be comparing exchange rates between two countries, these are the UK (£) and the USA ($) to see if the changes are enough to make any differences or whether just negligible. I will select data from the year 1980 to 2015 in yearly intervals. Comparing each year with the previous year. These will be compared using Excel and Minitab and displayed as a simple linear regression model. The absolute PPP should mean that ERt = ERt 1 + u. The book begins with the author investigating a rumour of an ancient tribe in Mexico known as the Tarahumara who live in the Copper Canyons upon the same lifestyle and traditions as they did hundreds, if not, thousands of years ago. It was said that the Tarahumara were a group of superathletes that have the ability to run for periods of up to 400 miles, barefoot or in sandals, without rest while avoiding injury in the process. Obviously, for one pursuing the avoidance of running related injuries, this was an intriguing thought for author Christopher McDougall; therefore the first chapter consists of him following a lead in Mexico by tracking down a man known as Caballo Blanco. This meeting, however, was very brief as to the fact that the Salvador and the author had forgotten certain key pieces of Tarahumara modesty and interaction making it so that, after feeding them and providing some water, Arnulfo ran off. The condenser also functions to maintain the temperature throughout the heating process and thereby maximizing the accuracy of the experimental results. The addition of boiling chips in the heating process to dissolve the diphenyl serves to minimize the possibility of the occurrence of bumping, i.e. sudden explosive boiling whereby large bubbles erupt from the heated solution. Instead, a steady stream of small air bubbles is produced with the addition of the chips. Subsequently after complete dissolving of the crude diphenyl, an additional 15 mL of ethanol is added to ensure that all the crude diphenyl is dissolved. A small amount of decolourising charcoal is added to the solution mixture. The decolourising charcoal serves to remove any impurities in the mixture, by adsorbing substances responsible for colouration of the solution on its surface via its activated properties. A small amount is used as the desired product may be adsorbed as well if a large amount is used instead. The mixture is filtered via a preheated stemless glass funnel immediately after boiling for 10 15 minutes. This is to prevent any early crystallization of the mixture since its crystallization temperature is quite low. The use of preheated apparatus for filtration is also to minimize premature crystallization of the mixture. Filtration of the mixture while it is still hot is to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
