Introduction
• Charles pierce, William James and John Dewey originated
primarily pragmatism movement in philosophy.
• pragmatic means dealing with matters according to their practical
significance or immediate importance.
• The term pragmatism has been derived from the Greek term
'pragma' which means "use".
• Here "use" is the criteria of reality

Aims of Education
1. To develop child's powers and abilities keeping in view individual
differences, no definite principle is laid down in this regard.
2. To create an atmosphere for the child to be active.
3. To play a role for awakening the human generation.
4. To inculcate democratic values and ideals in the individuals.

5. To give freedom to the child to develop his own desires and
achieve his ambitions.

Curriculum:
Curriculum is based upon the following two aspect/ factors.
a) Psychological (as per interest and inclinations of the child).
b) Social (to enable the individual to play an effective role in social
life)

Characteristics of Curriculum
1-Utility:
The curriculum imposed on the child must have some utility, based
on child’s interest and inclinations. The desire to talk and
exchange ideas, Discovery, creation and artistic expression –
content of practical expression.
2-Flexibility:
Curriculum should be flexible and not pre-determined and rigid
capable of accommodating the changes in child's interest etc.

Characteristics of Curriculum
3-Experimental (related to child's contemporary experiences):
Teaching of each subject should be related to the content of the
child's experiences.
4-Close to Life:
The subject should be related to the child's pattern of life at
different stages of life. The various subjects in the curriculum
should be harmonized.

Performance of Actions:
The teacher should not stuff the child's mind with his own
knowledge and experiences. The activities and the subjects
should be related to the child's life.

 Democratic principles
 Individual differences must be kept in mind
 The teacher must abstain from imposing his own ideas, interests
on the children
 Aim at enabling the child to became a responsible citizen.

 Child’s discipline depends upon the environment in which he lives.
 Self discipline is a better weapon
 Get the children involved in such activities that are related to his
natural tendencies.

Pluralism:
1. As many worlds as human being.
2. Ultimate reality is not one but many.
3. Truth and aims of life change from time to time.

Emphasis on change:
Utilitarianism:
Utility is the test of all truth and reality. utility means
fulfillment of human needs.
Results decide good and evil of ideas, beliefs and actions.
Changing aims and values:
Everyone should seek aims and values according to his
choice and abilities.
Old aims and values are not accepted.
