international development is
global poverty and policies that
need to be implement to solve it.
• Eliminating poverty and hunger
by 2015 is the one goal of
Millennium Development Goals
• Billions of dollars have been devoted to
eradicate poverty in Africa, Latin America
and Asia.
• The problem remains and rethinking of the
nature of poverty to implement better and
effective policies.
Poor economics
• In “Poor economics” Banerjee
and Duflo force us to rethink
about global poverty.
• Their aim is to understand the
basic insights and incentives that
guide poor people’s decisions
and lives.

• Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action
Lab is a global research centre
working to reduce poverty by ensuring
that policy is informed by scientific
evidence.

Poor Decisions
• In other cases, they might spend
money on alcohol, tobacco and
festivals even though they don't
have enough to eat.

talked to a man who didn't have enough money
to feed his family, but had a TV and a DVD
player.
Tasty v/s Nutritious Food
• Even when they do buy food, they
might opt for food that is tasty, rather
than nutritious.
Poverty and marriage
• These days Indian common people weddings
may cost between Rs 5 lakhs to Rs 20 lakhs.
This does not include the dowries (if any) and
the cost of jewellery.
Education v/s Poverty
• On the issue of education, it may be the case
that the poor undervalue the importance of
even a small amount of education.
