3. •Plagiarism is a very serious academic offence.
•Students are expected to show how their views are
developed and to support their opinions by referring to
others' ideas.
•The way in which students develop their views is often
referred to as 'making the argument' though this has
nothing to do with disagreement or fighting.

4. PlagiarismPlagiarism
Students are expected to show they agree or
disagree with others' views and where they
disagree, to explain why they do so. This is
called critical analysis but is much more than
just criticising the other person. It means
making a judgement about someone else's
work.

5. “Plagiarism is the use, without acknowledgement, of the
intellectual work of other people, and the act of
representing the ideas or discoveries of another as one's
own in written work submitted for assessment.
To copy sentences, phrases or even striking expressions
without acknowledgement of the source (either by
inadequate citation or failure to indicate verbatim
quotations), is plagiarism; to paraphrase without
acknowledgement is likewise plagiarism.”

6. “Where such copying or paraphrase has occurred the lake
mention of the source in the bibliography shall not be
deemed sufficient acknowledgement; each such instance
must be referred specifically to its source”.
Verbatim quotations must be either in inverted commas,
or indented, and directly acknowledged.

centuries-old history.
After the development of the Internet, where articles

copying the work of others much easier, simply by
copying and pasting text from one web page to
another.

10. Plagiarism is not copyright infringement.
While both terms may apply.
Copyright infringement is a violation of the rights of a
copyright holder, when material protected by copyright is used
without consent. On the other hand, plagiarism is concerned
with the unearned increment to the plagiarizing author's
reputation that is achieved through false claims of authorship.

Editor's Notes
"Passing off" indicates that there is some false impression created as to the authenticity of the work, i.e. it seems like you're claiming that the ideas are yours.
"someone else's work". This might be someone else's good idea, image, data or research, it might be in a book or a web page; it may have been told to you by someone else.
"intentionally or unintentionally". Just because you didn't mean to do it, doesn't mean it hasn't happened. You are responsible for the work you submit, and when you submit it you are claiming it is your work. Mitigating circumstances, time pressures or other difficulties are not excuses for submitting work which is not your own, in the long run you will only make matters worse.
"as your own". It is fine to use the work of others, but you must give them credit for it. This is where referencing comes in. Don't pretend it is your work if it isn't.
"for your own benefit". This might mean a better grade or avoiding a G grade or might be buying you time for another assignment. No such justification is permitted.
