Phospholipase C (PLC) is an enzyme that cleaves phospholipids just before the phosphate group. It plays an important role in signal transduction by binding to and activating G protein coupled receptors. There are several isozymes of PLC classified by type, and they are activated by heterotrimeric G proteins, protein tyrosine kinases, small G proteins, calcium, and phospholipids. PLC cleaves phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate to produce inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate and diacyl glycerol.
