Golden Age Of Piracy Research Paper
Pirate Essay
Pirates to most people resemble an iconic stereotype. This is that hollywood image that depicts pirates
wearing eyepatches, walking with wooden legs, and out in the sea searching for treasure. Although
some of these aspects resemble a Pirate the history of Pirates and Piracy in the sea is quite interesting.
Piracy in the sea dates back long ago around the 2nd century BC. According to the website Famous
Pirates the authors state that Piracy came into existence shortly after the creation of first organized
naval trading. This would make sense since these merchant ships would carry valuable goods around
unprotected. Meaning that eventually somebody would figure out that it s possible to raid these ships
and loot all of the the valuables. Piracy carried on for several centuries, seeing activity in the
Mediterranean, and even in Southeast Asia. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the period that most of us are familiar with because it starred piracy in the Caribbean. In the
video The Golden Age of Piracy by Its History the host explains that after the Spanish conquered the
Carribeans they had all this access to the valuable resources on the islands for themselves. Other world
powers such as the English, the French, and the Dutch also wanted apart of this treasure. The English,
French, and Dutch decided to hire Privateers to attack the Spanish Merchant Ships ultimately trying to
deprive Spain of their resources. For example, in the article Piracy in the Caribbean the authors stated
that Pirates were also given legal status . . . privateers were used in the Caribbean by rival nations to
attack treasure ships heading back to their home country. Basically saying, Piracy actually became
legal for a period of time and was encouraged by world powers at the time. These privateers were
essentially mercenaries on sea hired to raid Spanish merchant

International Business Environment
GFC and the Debt Crisis
After the global financial crisis in 2008, and the debt crisis in late 2009, which are the start of the
nightmare of the global economy, in early 2012, the global economy are expected to enter into
recovery phase, the International Monetary Fund made an announcement that the world economy has
an expected global economic growth rate at 3.5%, however, the two cuts of the forecast in April and
October (now to 3.3%) shows that the prospect of the global economy situation is not really very
good, actually 2012 is the slowest year of the growth since 2009.
But, the thing is that according to World Bank s announcement, the expected growth rate has been
divided into two parts, developing countries with a growth rate of 5.3% and advanced countries with a
growth rate of 1.4% .( World Bank database,2012)
The rapidly growth of Asian Pacific region
After a significant transformation during the 2000s, the Asian Pacific region countries became a part
of the global supply chains, also the very aggressive consumer power based on the large population,
the low labour cost and high productivity have made this region part of a non ignorable global

Valley Forge Dbq Essay
The war was very tough, men fought hard, we gave it our all. But war at this time wasn t our biggest
worries... it was our base, set at Valley Forge. It was like something out of a movie, conditions were
horrible, freezing, no shelter, little supply of food or water, men are dying, disease is getting around...
this is when times were horrible. George Washington our leader has 11,000 men on his back, but what
Valley Forge is doing will decrease our numbers fast. The early winter not only affected us but when
spring came everything thawed and created mud so deep we could barely get to our destination.
Should I even re enlist? Of course I should! It s wrong to quit, I am going to stay loyal to my country
and fight for what s right! I will re enlist. The first reason I am reenlisting is because many of our
soldiers and men are dying. In document C it states how bad the weather was and how crucial it was.
Valley Forge had the worst weather seen in the winter. Temperatures are very critical and fatal to our
men. It doesn t help that our shelter is the worst, barely any heat to keep us warm. Just horrible
conditions and too harsh for our men. Our men are falling and so are numbers, losing many men. The
least I could do is keep fighting for my country. They need me! ... Show more content on

George Washington soon teaches us all how crucial this win is for the future of America. Basically this
is a must win. This war will decide the future of America. It s now or never, we have to win this war.
If we win we get freedom and independence with our own government and country. Yes the British is
the best Army in the world but we can show them, they don t know what s coming. A people fighting
for their freedom and rights is more powerful than an army fighting just because they were told too. I
am reenlisting so we can win this war and gain

The Class About Benedict Spinoza s Ethics
Riley Fichter
COMM 101, Sec. 33
October 7th, 2014
My goal is to inform the class about Benedict Spinoza s Ethics: Part One.
My central idea is how Spinoza s idea of God brings a new perspective on existence to those who take
the time to listen.
Spinoza s Ethics and You
I. Introduction
A. What is the truth behind the universe?
B. Many people have asked themselves this question over the course of history.
C. Today, however, I am going to focus in on one individual and explore his work around this subject:
Benedict de Spinoza.
D. Spinoza was a Dutch philosopher of the 17th century, and was considered a rationalist, or someone
who mainly uses reason in their pursuit of knowledge and understanding, and, especially in Spinoza s
case, applied ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
2. As a result, substances are also self caused, as no two substances can exist at the same time, nor can
a substance create another substance.
When something is created by something else, the original object s knowledge would depend and be
determined by its creator, and would thus be unable to be a substance, as it is now dependent.
3. Substances are characterized by their attributes, or what one s intellect perceives as a way of
defining that substance s essence
Attributes are not outright accurate ways of defining a substance, but instead act as way to
conceptualize a substance in many different ways.
4. Now that we can conceptualize a substance, we can now attempt to understand Spinoza s idea that
there is only one substance. (TRANSITION)
B. Spinoza argues that there can only be one substance.
1. We do not generally perceive substances, but we instead perceive modes.
Modes are things that depend upon something else for its existence, in this case a substance.
All things that exist within the universe are modes.
This means that you and I are modes of one substance, reflecting some of its infinite attributes.
2. The reason why we cannot perceive the one substance is because that one substance has and infinite
number of attributes, which express an infinite essence, and thus becomes the encompassing
everything. (air quotes)
3. The everything we perceive are the modes of the one substance, and thus shows how there

The Life Aquatic With Steve Zizzou Analysis
The magic of film is that it can tightly control what the viewer sees. A camera s ability to let directors
decide what is explicitly shown and what is merely implied makes it a powerful storytelling tool. The
average director wishes to immerse the viewer as much as possible, using lavish special effects and
high tech equipment to hide the artificiality of the film under a thick layer of polish. When a film
breaks this immersion it is usually considered to be a technical or creative failure. Other films for
various reasons decide to deliberately either break the viewers immersion or never immerse them in
the first place. A good example of one of these deliberately false films is The Life Aquatic with Steve
Zizzou, directed by Wes Anderson in 2004. Without giving much detail it is the story of Steve Zizzou
(portrayed by Bill Murray,) a documentarist and oceanographer who vows to avenge a comrade who
was allegedly killed by a jaguar shark. However though the course of the film it is revealed that the
eponymous character is not the knowledgeable adventurer that he claims to be, in fact being an
incompetent hack more concerned with wealth and prestige than anything else. Though Zizzou s films
appear to have adequate production values it is revealed that much of it is inaccurate or even
fabricated for the sake of showmanship. Anderson uses broken immersion as a metacommentary or
analogy of the fake nature of Zizzou s documentaries and his phony persona.
An excellent example of

The Is A Human Need
1. My product, despite not servicing a human need, is very useful as a want product.
Many people, especially in a highly industrialized, fastpaced society, look for a way to relax and
unwind after a day s work, something which often comes from the use of alcohol. Because Belgians
are hardworking, urban people, it is important that at the end of the day they have a bit of a reward for
all their work, even if this means one relaxing whiskey on the rocks.
2. As mentioned in the previous stage, in Canada and the United States the target market for Canadian
Club is very specific. Here, it is marketed as a manly drink, and mainly sold to middleaged and elderly
males. In Belgium, because of the egalitarian view within the country, it would ... Show more content

Unlike many countries where the use of alcohol is rare or prohibited due to the prominence of a
certain religion (i.e. Iran), there are technically no issues with the use of alcohol in Belgium. However,
as will be expanded on later, during the six weeks of what
Catholics call Holy Lent before Easter, many people participate in a ritual where a part of a person s
diet is given up voluntarily in order to make way for increased spirituality.
During this time, some of the people who still practice Lent (of which there are already quite few)
may choose to give up alcohol. Otherwise, the use of the product does not interfere with the popular
beliefs in the country in any way. With only 5 percent of the population being Muslim, and and an
even smaller 0.3 percent being Orthodox Christian
(they also practice Lent), the popular view of alcohol in Belgium is a generally positive one. In fact,
Belgium itself is one of the world s largest producers of beer, which indicates the general opinion
surrounding the topic of alcohol.
6. Canadian Club is mainly unique in two ways. Firstly, its obviously foreign name, which already
gives it an edge in the Belgian market. Because it is a distinctly Canadian product, customers may
view it as something exotic and different from other products available. Secondly, as mentioned
earlier, Canadian Club is marketed as a product of exceptional quality, putting it ahead of many other
competitors of worse quality.
7. Belgium s current topselling

Disadvantages And Disadvantages Of Diversity In The United...
Not everyone in the United States have the same opportunities as others. This causes there to be
separate groups and organizations who have different advantages than the other groups. The
disadvantages that these other groups have can affects their lives drastically. Some of these advantages
and disadvantage are caused by privilege Privilege is the benefits you get from belonging to a certain
group. Being privileged could result in many advantages in life. Essentially if you were born a male
you have a better advantage than a woman would. Men has the luxury to get payed more than women
do and they don t have to worry about being raped by just walking down the street. Another advantage
of being privileged in being born white. Being born caucasian or African American isn t something
that you can control, however the opportunities they get sometimes are based upon the color of their
skin. In the past years, there has been an ongoing trend that haven t been changed. Caucasians have
been getting better jobs and better opportunities than people of color. There are certain jobs out there
today that mainly hire white males; this is because they re known to be superior and dominant in the
U.S. However not everyone seeing this issue because they are blinded by their privileges. Privileges
can be blinding for people who are privileged. If you have privilege you re often blinded by the
suffering of other people who don t have the same privilege that you do. Sometimes you aren t able

Katherine Mansfield And Ernest Hemmingway Are Both Published
Katherine Mansfield and Ernest Hemmingway are both published writers. One was born in New
Zealand and the other in the United States during the late 19th century. This paper will compare and
contrast the setting, plot, imagery, climax, and theme between Mansfield s Miss Brill and
Hemmingway s Cat in the Rain.
The setting in Miss Brill takes place in a public garden in France. The story states the band plays in
the Jardins Publiques (Public Gardens) in France (15). Miss Brill, the protagonist, is proceeding on a
Sunday afternoon to the gardens where she will listen to a band. Mansfield tells us there were a
number of other people out that afternoon, more than any other Sunday. The time of year appears to be
autumn. Mansfield ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is a lady vicariously living through those around her. She makes observations of the patient
Englishman and his nagging wife (15). Furthermore, she observes two young girls laughing and
meeting up with two soldiers (15). Nearby resides a stiff man with a woman. The man indifference to
the woman makes Miss Brill angry. She whispered over and over The Brute! The Brute! (16). She was
also unimpressed by a beautiful woman that passed by. She dropped some violets, which a young boy
picked up and gave back to her. However Miss Brill see s the woman throw the flowers away. She
exclaims, Dear me! (16). Miss Brill views the events as a play as if she is an actress. Each individual
have their parts. Even the fur she wears around her head has a part in the play. Mansfield advises, It
was exactly like a play. Who could believe the sky at the back wasn t painted? (17).
In contrast, the characters in the plot of Cat in the Rain are limited to the American couple, a cat, the
padrone, and a maid. The American wife sees a cat from her window. Hemingway states, A cat was
crouched under one of the dripping green tables (62). She desires to retrieve the cat against the
indifference of her husband. The American wife states, I m going down and get that kitty (62). George,
her husband, half heartedly offers to retrieve it for her. He was indifferent to the episode. Hemingway

Funerals And Death Rituals In American Culture
Funerals are a dark, gloomy, and sometimes emotional subject for many people. Death rituals like
funerals are times where we as a community come together to mourn someone s loss; it is depressing
and often turbulent. But we often overlook the positive aspects of events like these in favor of their
negative ones. We can t ignore the grief that comes with funerals and loss, but we can investigate how
funerals are beneficial to those trying to cope with bereavement. In fact, funerals and death rites have
many psychological benefits. This is pervasive to grief rituals no matter the culture or the time period:
for example, the people of Ancient Greece and the people of modern day America. As humans, it is in
our nature to perform rituals on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Ancient Greece, for example, there were two main practices for dealing with loss: tombstones and
lamentation. The earliest Greek tombstones found dated back to the Hellenistic period (323 31 BCE).
They were mildly expensive, and as such most belonged to the middle class. Emotional expressions on
the stones were evident through the use of elements of personal significance to the deceased. These
emotional expressions were most commonly found on children s graves, and in the form of things like
short biographical inscriptions or depictions of their favorite toys (Melin). Lamentation was the
central death ritual in the world of Ancient Greece. The earliest evidence of it was in the Mycenaean
period (1600 1100 BCE), on painted sarcophagi and clay figurines. A lament was without exception
done by a woman, either a professional lamentress or a close relative of the deceased. It was
considered an art form, a mixture of an improvised theater performance and a song, and addressed
both the dead and the living (Stevanovic). In addition to the performer being considered an artist, she
was also considered to have the role of a witch or a shaman because of how she acted as an
intermediary between worlds. Emotional intensity was always present in a lament, the performer
going so far as to mutilate herself by scratching and beating herself (Sijakovic). Furthermore, because
women had such a powerful role in the Ancient Greece grieving process, they had a certain power
over death. It was for this reason that in the sixth century, laws were passed against lamentation in
some city states, like the Solonian Laws. The laws were not really about the lamentation, but more
about suppressing women because many were fearful of the power they seemed to hold (Sijakovic,

The Role Of Household Income With Multiple Aspects Of...
Measure of wealth such as income and assets are commonly considered to be objective assessments of
environmental circumstances, making direct contributions to happiness or life satisfaction. Certainly,
the alternation between and individual s income and life satisfaction is as high as .50 in some
countries. (Krueger, 2006). The relationship of household income with multiple aspects of subjective
well being was examined in a New Zealand telephone probability sample conducted in 2008.
Consistent with previous research, household income had positive logarithmic associations with
subjective quality of life and happiness. The logarithmic function was steeper for quality of life than
for happiness, indicating that income is linked more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite the belief that more money and possessions would improve our life, evidence shows that
people with a strong financial goal orientation are less satisfied with their lives, less happy and have
more psychological problems. (Dittmar, 2009). Surveys asking people how happy they are indicate
that the average level of happiness has not increased over several decades, despite large increases in
income per capita. For example, in the United States, income per capita has increase since 1950, yet
the percentage of respondents who say they are very happy has not increase, and the percentage who
says they are not very happy has not declined significantly. (Lee) Similar disconnects between
happiness and income has been found in Japan, The United Kingdom, and continental Europe. Two
explanations are often offered. The first explanation is that any additional happiness from more
income results primarily from increasing our relative income, but we can increase our relative income
only by reducing the relative income of others, which reduces their happiness. The second explanation
is that the pursuit of money becomes addictive and reduces the time available for family and friends,
intellectual pursuits, exercise and other activities that result in genuine happiness and, it is claimed, do
not reduce the happiness of others. Happiness and money are not linked. A person can be really rich
and be totally unhappy. Also a person can be really poor and be happy. Money can bring

Examples Of The Giver In The Giver
At the beginning of The Giver , the reader is to believe that the community Jonas lives in is a utopia. It
s later revealed that this is quite the opposite of what it really is. A dystopia. Along with Jonas, the
reader finds out how in Jonas s community they they give the elderly and newborns lethal injections,
constrict feelings, and prevent any form of decision making. When Jonas discovers these things
through memories, he is distraught, and he has the right to be. He wants to show everyone what has
been taken away from them, and what they are being lied to about. This is why I believe it was
completely justified for Jonas to leave the community.

exposed to all the new concepts Jonas learned about. Pg. 146 The Giver shook his head. Jonas, he
said, the community has depended, all these generations, back and back and back, on a resident
Receiver to hold the memories for them. I ve tuned over many of them to you in the past year. And I
can t take them back. There s no way for me to get them back if I have given them to you. So if you
escape, once you are gone and, Jonas, you know that you can never return Jonas nodded solemnly. It
was the terrifying part. Yes, he said, I know. But if you come with me The Giver shook his head and
made a gesture to silence him. He continued. If you get away, if you get beyond, if you get to
elsewhere, it will mean that the community has to bear the burden themselves, of the memories you
have been holding for them. When Jonas left, the all of his memories were released back into the
community. Doing this, brought them many new memories of pain, death, love, color and more. Pg.

onto the community. Doing this, hopefully showed the community all the things that had been taken
away from them. He pushed firmly again at the pedal with his foot and continued riding along the
road. It was not safe to spend time looking back. He thought of the rules he had broken so far: enough
that if he were caught, now, he would be condemned. Even if Jonas broke numerous rules, leaving the
community would still benefit everyone else, as it exposed them to brand new ideas they never knew

Leonid Fridman s Essay America Needs Its Nerds
In his essay America Needs Its Nerds , author Leonid Fridman discusses the stigma against so called
nerds and how these nerds are essential to America in keeping up with other countries. He does this
providing several examples. However, this essay is ultimately weak because of the broadness of his
examples, as well as the overarching strawman he creates to represent society . By relying solely on
these examples, he creates a very simple one sided argument To begin the essay, Fridman states that
our society is one which has only derogatory terms like nerd and geek for the intellectually curious
and academically serious (lines 2 4). As a broad statement, this holds true. However, in the context of
having a living person with a brain being the audience, this crumbles. Nerd and geek defined by

than/superior to anyone else?). Fridman then states that at Harvard University, an Ivy league
university known for its prestigiousness, that anti intellectualism is rampant . He provides an example
saying that most students are ashamed of how much they study, but his lack of concrete evidence for
this example makes it seem extremely unlikely. Some may say that the unlikeliness of it adds to the

The Effects Of Random Audience On Cancer
For my final project, I decided to write my paper over my findings of if people were knowledgeable
about cancer. This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart, I have had a few family diagnosed
with cancer. Most of them are now in remission and I did lose a two family members that lost their
battle. I think if more people became knowledgeable about cancer, we maybe can find a cure in the
near future. I will explain how I analyzed the knowledge of the random audience that I selected to
partake in my survey. The key terms and definitions that I will be using are: statistics, mean, median,
mode, standard deviation, range, and population standard deviation. Statistics is the science of
collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data in order to make decisions. The mean of a data
set is the sum of the data entries divided by the number of entries. The median of a data set is the
value that lies in the middle of the data when the data set is ordered. The mode of a data set is the data
entry that occurs with the greatest frequency. Standard deviation is a quantity calculated to indicate the
extent of deviation for a group as a whole. The range of a data set is the difference between the
maximum and minimum data entries in the set. The population standard deviation of a population data
set of N entries is the square root of the population variance (Larson Farber, 2014). The collection of

Authority In The Muslim World
The topic of religious authority in the Muslim world has been a debate since the beginning of early
Islam. The debate of authority was centralized over who was able to elucidate the meaning of the texts
of revelation. Over time, the superiority of who had the right to interpret the religious texts and guide
the community changed from the pre modern to the modern period.
The fuqaha were elite religious scholars, or members of a wealthy family, that rose to power in 700
(Lecture, October 19). The fuqaha understood collective responsibility by the use of Fard al kifayah,
which represents a ritual obligation a Muslim community can fulfill for the whole (Lecture, October
24). They presumed the masses, such as the peasants, would be unable to follow ... Show more content

Neo traditionalists base what they do on the four schools of law and gives interpretive authority in

economic reform and economic empowerment. Revivalists break from Muhammad Abduh s

create their own systems of welfare so they are not dependent on the state. Revivalism is different
from the other trends because it focuses on the individuals and emphasizes the ability of anybody to
read the Qur an and Hadith and decide what they are supposed to do with it. It is different from pre
modern ideas of authority because it strictly relies on the individual and not the collective. Violent
Revivalism represents the groups such as ISIS and Al Qaeda. They reject the idea of a separation of
the group and society and use violence to do so. This group is different from the others because

Essay on Alexander The Great
Few historical figures stand out in the same degree as that of Alexander the Great. He was a warrior
by 16, a commander at age 18, and was crowned King of Macedon by the time he was 20 years old.
He did things in his lifetime that others could only dream about. Alexander single handedly changed
the nature of the ancient world in just over a decade. There were many attributes that made Alexander
Great. He was a brilliant strategist and an inspired leader; he led by example and was a conqueror at
heart. In looking at his early childhood, accession to the throne, conquests, marriage, and death one
can see why Alexander the Great is revered in historical contexts as one of the greatest figures of all

Alexander, noticing the horse was afraid of his own shadow, brought him into the sun and calmed him
down. Young Alexander then jumped on the horse as Philip s men watched on with amazement.
Alexander kept the horse and named it Bucephalus, meaning ox headed. He and the horse were
companions throughout Alexander s journeys and conquests, and when the horse died he named a city
after him called Bocephia or Bucephala. Alexander s astonishing upbringing ultimately led to his
accession to the throne of Macedon. But first, Philip s life must be viewed in context with Alexander s
to see how this child became a king of a great nation. Philip had many successes in his early years as
King of Macedon, particularly because of his speed and decisiveness of action in battle. Within three
years of his accession to the throne at the age of 24, Philip had unified Macedonia. Philip s defeat of
the Greek allies at Chaeronea in 338 B.C. is typically regarded as the end of the history of the free
Greek world. In joining and making Macedonia secure militarily, Philip granted the conditions from
which emerged a Macedonian imperialism. Philip s efforts are made possible because of the army he
had built, which was later the same army Alexander led. The Macedonian army constantly had been a
national army. The state was, indeed, the army; its king declared absolutely by the soldiers in arms. By

Interpretation Of Stormy Weather By Lena Horne
The version of Stormy Weather I like best was the cover by the Reigning Sound. In this version, the
song is updated from a classical style to an alternative rock and roll from the 50 s. The Reigning
Sound uses different instrumentation than the covers done by Lena Horne and Royal Crown Revue.
The instrumentation used by Reigning Sound, includes guitars, electric bases, keyboards, drums and
possibly other instruments. Using these types of instruments gives the song more appeal to the young
generations that have a taste for classic rock. Instrumentation is important when giving music a
category, for instance music that uses classical rock instruments sounds more upbeat and fast. The
cover by Lena Horne, does not incorporate the upbeat and fast rhythm s I look for when picking
music. This cover reminded me of songs played in old black and white movies. It made me feel
soothed, instead of energetic. When choosing my music, I want to feel energeic and moved, not
soothed. This cover sounds like it belong in a movie or playing as background noise to a musical,
whereas, the cover by Reigning Sound, has a rhythm that makes you want to move. The cover by
Reigning Sound sounds like it would be playing on the radio in the 50 s and at dances. ... Show more

Henry Martyn Robert s Rules Of Order
Henry Martyn Robert, author of Robert s Rules of Order was born in 1837 and died in 1923, and a
Brigadier General in the Union Army during the Civil War. In 1863 he was asked to chair a local town
meeting at a church in New Bedford, Massachusetts but didn t know how to preside. He assumed the
assembly would behave, but the meeting was a disaster, lasted 14 hours and really didn t accomplish
anything. General Robert was very frustrated and vowed to never again attend another meeting until
he knew more about Parliamentary Law. He researched a small book on the subject, and found some
rules for DELIBERATE ASSEMBLIES with four or five motions according to rank, two or three

Argument On The Tobacco Advertising
ARGUMENT ON THE TOBACCO ADVERTISING
On Feb 6, 2001 Government of India (GOI) dropped a bombshell on the tobacco Industry when it
announced that it would shortly table a bill banning Tobacco Companies from advertising their
products and sponsoring sports and cultural events. The people that support the government plan on
banning Tobacco Companies from advertising their product, believe state had the right to intervene in
the overall interest of the citizens. They also cited the example of drugs like cocaine, which was,
banned in the world over. Most of the people that support the ban believe that so far it as happened in
some international countries like France, Finland and Norway, it is constitutional to ban the product
from advertising.
In fact, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco accounted for over 3 million
deaths in 1990, the figure rising to 4.023 million deaths in 1998. It was estimated that tobacco related
deaths would rise to 8.4 million in 2020 and to 10 million in about 2030, they strongly believe existent

The name Antartica comes from a greek word which means the opposite of north. Antarctica is the
southernmost continent and is known for having cold and windy conditions. It is the fifth largest
continent out of seven other continents in the world and the area of Antarctica is 14,000,000 km2 and

The environment conditions in Antarctica is very harsh, it is known for being the most coldest and
windiest continent in the world as 98% of it is covered in ice which is 4.7 kilometres thick. Antarctica
is considered a desert due to the fact that it barely rains and how dry it is around the continent. The
weather temperature in Antarctica can go as low as 89.6 degrees celsius and a high of 12.3 degrees
celsius with an average temperature of 49 degrees celsius. This is because of the height above sea
levels, the atmosphere and the land masses around Antarctica which is why the continent is an
extremely cold place. In Antarctica the strong winds that are caused is due to the strong winds which
are the katabatic winds. The cold and dry katabatic wind is caused by the downslope gravity flow

Ego And Superego In Henry s Id By Frued
Frued was the first to suggest that everyone has a large unconscious, and he classified it into three
parts. These three parts being the Id, ego, and superego. The movie Regarding Henry provides many
great examples of these three parts. This movie is about a lawyer named Henry who gets shot in the
head during a robbery of a small store, and his journey to recovery. He starts out as a man who only
cares about winning cases and materialistic items, but after the shooting he is a completely different
person. He has more of a moral compass after the incident, as well as a more playful and loving nature
toward his family. Henry s natural state is most likely the superego because he became more moral
and gained a conscience of what is right and wrong. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning of the movie he finds pleasure in winning court cases and fancy items. He seems
uninterested in his wife and daughter, and only pays them attention when he has to. After the incident
the things that bring him joy are almost the complete opposite. The things he once cared for he has no
interest in. When he learns to speak again he becomes extremely excited and proud of himself, and he
has the same reaction when he learns to walk. He also becomes more playful with his daughter and
gains pleasure from being around her. They become closer than they ever would have been, and he
begins to do many things with his daughter like reading and making jokes with her as if he is a young
child. To name a specific example of when his Id is shown, would be when he went to the library with
his daughter and he begins to throw little pieces of paper at her while she is trying to do her
homework. This shows a more playful side that we would ve never seen before. Henry went from
being completely selfish and gaining pleasure from superficial things to becoming a caring and playful

The Graduate Symbolism

5th March, 2015
Best Picture Analysis #1 The Graduate
Criteria:
1. The movie should have more to it than just pure entertainment. It should have a deeper message that
will impact me in one way or another.
2. At least one character should be emotionally relatable, and the experiences that the character goes
through should also be realistic and relatable.
3. There should be at least some symbolism in the movie that foreshadows an event/ multiple events.
In the year 1967, Mike Nichols directed The Graduate a movie that tells the story of how Benjamin
Braddock, a recent college graduate, gets involved in an affair with Mrs. Robinson, and then later falls

The first shot in the clip is a close up of the blank stare on Ben s face, against the white background of
the airplane seat. This shot looks like a mugshot which symbolizes how Ben feels trapped in a prison.
Next, when Ben reaches the exit of the airport, the camera stops following him, and he gets lost in the
crowd, another similar situation occurs when Ben goes to Elaine s college to meet her he gets lost in
the crowd. These scenes connect to the scene when his parents take him downstairs from his room to
meet all the guests at the party and everyone crowds around him, leaving him with no personal space.
When Ben tries to leave the party and go upstairs, a lady pulls him down. This scene symbolizes how
whenever Ben tries to escape the prison or pull himself up, someone or his own anxiety and worries
pull him back down. Another interesting way that Mike Nichols used symbolism is through the color
scheme. He chose to use neutrals with a lot of gray and black throughout the movie the clothes, walls,
rooms, carpets. The color gray is an unemotional color. It is detached, neutral, impartial and indecisive
this color symbolizes how Ben is feeling throughout the movie. He seems completely detached from
all the happy scenes and the only emotions he shows are of loneliness and isolation. Another way the
colors were used in the movie was through the constant high contrast of black and white good versus
bad, innocence versus evil. Most of the time, Mrs. Robinson is seen wearing black clothes,
symbolizing her negative behavior and actions, whereas Elaine is always wearing white, and her room
is all white too, symbolizing her innocence and positive

Weed Should Not Be Legal
After reading most of the cons on this debate I have a lot to rebut. First one, You think I want to be on

REBUT: Obviously if/when weed becomes legal, it will be illegal to drive high, like Texting, and like
drinking, or pills, etc. Second one: One of the main reasons why it would be just plain stupid to
legalize one of the most used drugs in our nation is because it leads to hard drugs, such as cocaine and
heroine. (anonymous). REBUT: Actually, there are MANY marijuana users that do not use other drugs

The Curiosity about Soul
Do you believe in soul? Do you believe that we can still live even though we die? Does a human can
live without a body? The soul is our inner definition of existence in the world. According to the Bible,
soul exists within us. In the new and old testament, it says that the soul is translated as life. It became
our inner definition, because as stated in the Bible its idea refer as our emotion or inner thought as a
human. Each human has a purpose in their own life of existence. The soul is the eternal part of us, it
never dies, only our bodies. Every human is destined to die, but our soul are not going to die, it is still
functioning with the existence in the spirit world. They say that while the body is dead, our soul is still
alive as an immortal being. God created us as the way he molded the first human Adam that became as
a living soul. Science proved that the soul really exist. Many scientist proved that we all had a soul, it

From Novel to Film: The Strong Urge to Survive in Life of Pi
The will to live is a strong urge of survival that occurs when one s life is threatened. The novel and
film Life of Pi is about a boy named Piscine Molitor Patel who is lost in the middle of the Pacific
Ocean due to a shipwreck with a 450 pound Bengal Tiger. The theme that fits the novel and film the
best is the will to live. The novel and film effectively prove the theme by using symbols to portray
how badly Pi wants to live. Characterization also plays an important role in proving the theme as the
novel and book show how Pi and his tiger have to change themselves to live. Cinematic techniques
such as different types of camera angles are used as well to prove that the will to live is the essential
theme in the film. In the novel, Yann Martel shows how the camera angles prove what they prove. The
film and novel Life of Pi effectively capture the theme of the will to live by the effective use of
symbolism, characterization, and cinematic techniques.
To start off, the novel Life of Pi displays hope and survival through symbolism using the colour
orange. While Pi is in the ocean, there is orange all around him. Shortly after Pi falls into the ocean
and is swimming, he says that the ocean is black and cold and in rage (Martel 117). As one can
imagine, it s almost impossible to survive in an ocean that is in rage but he gets onto the life boat and
survives. After he

College Is The Best For College Essay
High school students who are just getting ready to graduate have two choices, either start working or

want to go to. Deciding which college to go to can be a hard choice, since going to college is a big
decision to make. Students know that going to college is going to be harder than high school. The
atmosphere is different, and many students are on their own after they make that college choice. Being

It is very challenging to be creative while you are under immense pressure. I know this far too well

This was an amazing thing as it would be the first time I had complete control over the operations of a

Supervisor was up for a Judgeship and thusly had to vacate his political position. Knowing the sitting
Supervisor would have to vacate his position immediately after confirmation by the State Legislature
and understanding Prince William County s rule about having to fill a vacant Board seat within 60
days, I understood that we had a very small window to officially campaign for the seat. I had to make
sure we fundraised well, had the right materials, staff, and volunteers, acquired key business and
political backing, and had established a high name ID before the State did Judge confirmations. This
would allow for a smooth and effective roll out of the Jacob s Campaign that would ultimately secure
victory. Thinking this process would only last around four months; I budgeted and created a campaign
strategy for this time frame. The problem came within the State Government. July 1st, 2014 was the
deadline the State Legislature had to pass a budget or the Virginia Government would shut down. This
budget would include funding for new state judges thus allowing judicial appointments to occur
igniting our race.

The Creationism Question Essay
In a historical context, creationism versus the theory of evolution has always been a hotly contested
subject, one of the major breakthroughs being when Darwin publicized his theory of evolution. When
Darwin published his theory of evolution in 1859, his book was considered a major technological
breakthrough at that time. The seeming proof that a God didn t exist created a catalyst, where
creationism was replaced with an almost atheism, because the existence of evolution counteracted
society s belief in God. In the article The Evolution Controversy: Who s Fighting with Whom about

Analysis Of The Book If The Chronicles Of Narnia
If The Chronicles of Narnia is read in chronological order, C.S. Lewis introduces Polly Plummer as
his first main female character in The Magician s Nephew. However, the title indicates this story is not
about her; it is about Digory, the magician s nephew. She explores and travels with Digory as his
friend, but her involvement in the story is mainly seen through her impact on Digory s perspective and
decisions. Nevertheless, by the same feminist ideology that declares each person prove her own merit,
the strength of Polly s characterization should be measured on its own. To suggest, as Susan
Henthrone does in The Image of Woman in the Fiction of C.S. Lewis, that Polly s role as a supporting
character means that she is not a strong character is to do a disservice to her distinctive
characterization. Digory s indignation at Uncle Andrew s sexist manipulations and comments serves to
undermine the conception that Lewis, as a narrator, undervalues Polly simply because of her gender.
To get Digory to go to what he calls the Other World, Uncle Andrew tricks Polly into putting on the
green ring that will transport her without giving her the ring that would bring her back. It would be
easy to assume, from Digory s initial condemnation of Andrew in the exclamation that he behaved like
a coward, sending a girl into a place you re afraid to go yourself (Lewis, 25), that Lewis implies that
Polly s gender, and some inherent weakness therein, makes Andrew s trickery truly

The Ethical Beliefs Of Judaism And Judaism
Judaism is a way of life for the devout Jew as it has significant abundance of traditions and teachings
associated with it. Its main aim is to form a proper manner between an individual and God, and the
second is the proper manner between two or more people. The core ethical teachings, the
Commandments of the Torah, the Prophetic Vision, the Book of Proverbs and its teachings bestowed

The Commandments of the Torah Halachah which means the way of life is the foundation of the
Jewish ethical system and the essence of the 613 mitzvot, which include the written and oral Torah.
The Ten Commandments that were given to Moses by God on Mount Sinai is the basis of the covenant
between God and the Jewish people and state the central code of conduct for a devout Jew . These
commandments are split into positive and negative commandments, which highlight how a Jew should
and should not conduct themselves. The positive commandments deal with the relationship and
worship between God and his people of Israel. This can be seen in the commandment, You shall have

Cathy Whitman Research Paper
Cathy Freeman was born on February 16, 1973 in Mackay, QLD. (The Editors of Encyclopædia
Britannica, 2017). Cathy has achieved quite a lot in her life thus far, and is an inspirational figure for
many Indigenous, and Non Indigenous Australians. Her legacy is still recognised as a hero today.
Cathy s efforts have been rewarded all throughout her career. She was the first Aboriginal person to
win a Commonwealth Games gold medal. The first Aboriginal women to compete in the Olympic
Games, where she was recognised as Young Australian of the Year Award, at only age 17. After, in
1998 she was awarded Australian of the Year, being the first person to receive both awards. This was
because of Cathy s efforts where she won gold in both her 200 metre and 400 metre events in the 2000
Sydney Olympic Games. This was a very notable event, as Cathy went on to do a victory lap holding
both the Australian flag, as well as the native Aboriginal flag (Australian of the Year Awards, n.d.). ...

Freeman was a representation of the entire indigenous community. After the 2000 Olympic games, the
political issues affecting Indigenous people were brought to local and international media (SBS,
2014). Where, Prime Minister at the time, refused to give an apology speech for the Stolen
Generations . Cathy s reaction to this was shown in an interview to a British newspaper. She stated,
you have to understand that when you have a government that is so insensitive to the issues that are
close to people s hearts, that have affected so many lives for the worse, people are going to be really
angry and emotional (Peacock, M. 2000). Freeman s grandmother was a part of the stolen generations
, which happened in the 1970 s, where many Aboriginal children were taken from their

The Death Of The Author By Roland Barthes And Michel Foucault
Throughout many different mediums such as literature and music there have been many controversial
pieces written in regards to the true meaning and purpose of authorship. Several French philosophers
such as Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault have written essays on the purpose of authorship. Roland
Barthes, writer of The Death of the Author , has a strong belief in the removal of the author from a
piece. Barthes believed that once a book has been written there is no more author but instead a scriptor
and text which are both born simultaneously. Meaning that the text is a living tissue for the
scriptor(reader) to interpret for themselves, leaving a text with multiple meanings dependent on a
scriptors interpretation. On the other hand, French philosopher, Michel Foucault believed that the
author is a key aspect to a written work. He believed that without an author a work would have no true
meaning in essence leaving everything up for debate which ultimately results in confusion. Foucault
also believed that removing the author from a text serves no purpose and as such, should not be done.
Similarly, an author is a very important aspect in music as well because musicians are able to bridge
gaps between them and their listeners through lyricism. Artists are able to do this by incorporating
narratives in their music allowing them to narrate their lives which may include hardships and
difficulties that they have gone through, which allows for connections to be made between the author
and a listener who has gone through the same experiences. For example, artists such as 21 Savage
speak about gang violence and poverty in their music which allows them to shed light on such issues
in order to raise public awareness. The rap artist 21 Savage, also known as 21, has written many songs
which have very deep lyrical meanings to them. For example 21 Savage wrote the song Famous in
which he describes his life prior to and after his rise to fame. In the song 21 Savage discusses how he
used to be less fortunate but is now doing well by stating the following, Rags to riches, n***a came
from the bottom/Hood rats, now a n***a f***in on models/Ridin in the foreign, remember ridin on
MARTA (21 Savage). In the above lyrics,

Hinduism And Buddhism Similarities
Buddhism and Hinduism are two religions that are known to share many similarities and contrasting
differences. Both religions are thought to have originated in the Ganges culture of Northern India
around 500 BC (Gartzke and Kristian, 57). Some religious scholars argue that Hinduism and
Buddhism share a long but peculiar relationship which is comparable to that of Christianity and
Judaism. Despite the existence of a strong rivalry between the followers of Buddha and the Siva, both
the religions, Buddhism and Hinduism have influenced each other in many ways (Gartzke and
Kristian, 59). Some of the similarities which Hinduism and Buddhism share include emphasizing on
the concept of Karma, compassion, and non violence towards living creatures, belief ... Show more

With many Hindu texts professing on the eternal nature of the soul, atman is said to be trapped within
a cycle of rebirth (Saraswathi, 46). Both reincarnation and Karma ideas are merged to stipulate that the
thoughts and actions within an individual s present life will play an important role in determining the
condition of soul s future existences. There is, therefore, a cause and effect of every action. The
motivation of religious and moral activities in Hinduism is to accumulate good Karma so as to free
oneself from baneful material thus liberating the soul from the cycle of rebirth (Fisher and Rinehart,
77). According to the idea of rebirth, death only relates to the physical body but the soul continues and
is reborn into another body. The continuing worldly existence, the samsara, thus refers to the cycle of
repeated births. As already mentioned, reincarnation is dictated by the law of Karma. According to
Hinduism, Karma is the law of cosmos leading to the absolute reality (Fisher and Rinehart, 78). The
doctrine of Karma sets the world of justice making every action to have an outcome. Renouncing the
worldly life is an important aspect in spiritual liberation and entails embodying Hinduism s Dharma
ideals so as to build good Karma that will prevent one from coming back as a lower class Hindu or
even an animal (Saraswathi,

Social Location Essay
Social location is the central ideal of a person. It is . . . is where all aspects of one s identity meet (kirk
Okazawa, 15). It determines a person s social standing and self definition. It is a powerful tool in
defining one s identity and without it, an identity would not be the same thing. It affects one s view of
reality and how the person may interpret the world. With a social location of a caucasion, upper
middle class, woman from the Midwest I have much leverage in society, this leverage allows me a lot
of leeway and influence. As a white, upper middle class, woman, I politically have a lot of power. My
vote is constantly being vied over by both republicans and democrats. Since my families wealth lends
us to the republican views, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I grew up in a community very homogenious and it is hard to understand that people s experiences
effect their understandings and alter our expectations. The idea of having a similar exterior equating to
a similar background is detrimental and creates a lot of distance between social locations because it
perpetuates stereotyping and essentialism. If you rely on looks and other identifying factors you will
miss much of the person, as people are always more than just one thing they identify, or have been
identified as. Misunderstanding creates distance because it leads people to retreat back into their own
communities that they recognize and know and perpetuates stereotypes of identities. I think it is
possible to diminish these distances by creating diaglogue between groups of people who identify
differently than eachother. Much can be said for facilitating discussion amongst people of different
backgrounds. It can aid in helping people gain a deeper understanding of one another and it allows a
free exchange of emotions and ideas that in the end bridge the gap between communities. I know
when I am exposed to new things or communities it is a learning process that requires of me to be
understanding and open minded, but it has always helped to bridge that gap of otherness and helps me
think in different more collective ideas about

Tyranny Dbq Essay
When the founding fathers realized that the Articles of Confederation just were not working for their
country, they gathered in Philadelphia in 1787 to write a new constitution. The Americans feared
tyranny in the government like what they had seen under the rule of King George III. The Constitution
was written with specific protections against tyranny as described by James Madison: tyranny is the
accumulation of all powers... in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many . The Constitution
guarded against tyranny by separating powers, allowing the branches to check the other branches, and
giving states both equal representation and representation based on population. The first guard against
tyranny was the separation of powers between the three branches of federal government and the states
which means that each has its own specific powers and the powers not given to the federal
government are given to the states. According to document A the federal government can conduct
foreign relations, regulate trade, make immigration laws, print money, declare war, and set up post
offices. The state and federal governments share the powers to make laws, enforce laws, collect taxes,
set up courts, and borrow money. The state governments have the powers to ... Show more content on

unconstitutional, the executive branch may veto legislative acts and appoint members of the supreme
court, and the legislative branch may override a veto(with a two thirds majority) and amend the

of government from misusing its powers. The branches cannot become too powerful if another branch

Government Intervention in Theater in Britain and the...
Theater has been a large part of nearly every culture. The maneuvers that this cultural mainstay has
made surely outdo many that other practices have made over the centuries. How the theater progressed
through time and adjusted itself in order to accommodate more people and more ideas, to reach its
audience in times of despair and to provide an unequitable entertainment value, are all important
aspects related to why and how the theater has always been so successful and played a large part in the
transition from the stage to film. The goal of this research is not to analyze the transition that the times
and technology provided, but to analyze the different institutions and efforts both the United States
government and the British parliament put forth to comfort and aid its people in times of strife;
namely The Great Depression. This paper will look specifically at the government interventions in the
theater in the United States and the lack of government intervention in Great Britain and compare the
outcomes that sent both countries on surprisingly the same path.
The years before the Great Depression were full of economic prosperity among people in both the
United States and Great Britain. The 1920s was an era of extreme wealth amongst a number of people.
Wall Street took over the role of the financial capital of the world, a title that previously belonged to
London. The confidence that many stockbrokers held caused market speculation, insane increase in
share prices, and

Alka-Seltzer Experiment
The purpose of this project is to test if smaller reactants create a faster chemical change. This test also
will show if hot or cold water affect the time of the chemical reaction. The experiment will show if
reactants are broken down into smaller particles can the chemical reactions speed up, the increase of
CO2 at ten second intervals. This will be done using an experiment with Alka seltzer tablets, varying
their physical composition and timing the release of CO2 over ten second intervals.
Alka Seltzer tablets have ingredients that help with indigestion, stomach aches, headaches, and
inflammation. The ingredients inside of a Alka Seltzer tablet are: 325 mg of aspirin, 1000 mg of citric
acid , and 1916 mg of sodium bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate is a white powder that can be used as a
buffering agent for pH, a cleaning solution, and a electrolyte replenisher.Additionally, sodium
bicarbonate uses ions to increase plasma and create a buffering agent for pH. The molecular formula
for sodium bicarbonate is NaHCO3. Another primary ingredient in Alka Seltzer is citric acid. Citric
acid is a big factor in metabolism. Citric acid can be found in citric fruit. The salt contained in citric
acid is very useful and is used as a anticoagulant because of the salt s ability to calcium ... Show more

8 Factors That Can Influence The Potential On Postsynaptic...
1. The following are 8 factors that can influence the potential on the postsynaptic membrane:
(a) Excitatory Postsynaptic Potentials (EPSPs): EPSPs increase the postsynaptic neuron s likelihood to
generate an action potential by generating a local depolarization. EPSPs result from excitatory stimuli,
such as an excitatory neurotransmitter (Glutamate) released by the presynaptic neuron. Excitatory
stimuli will bind and open ligand gated Na+ channels, allowing Na+ ions to move inside a cell down
their concentration gradient. The influx of Na+ ions will cause a local depolarization at the
postsynaptic membrane, which if summated can reach threshold and fire an action potential.
(b) Inhibitory Postsynaptic Potentials (IPSPs): EPSPs decrease the postsynaptic neuron s likelihood to
generate an action potential by generating a local hyperpolarization. EPSPs result from inhibitory
stimuli such as an inhibitory neurotransmitter (GABA) released by the presynaptic neuron. Inhibitory
stimuli can bind and open ligand gated K+ channels and Cl channels, allowing K+ ions to move out of
a cell and allowing Cl ions to move into a cell down their concentration gradient. The influx of Cl ions
and the outflux of K+ ions causes a local hyperpolarization at the postsynaptic membrane, which
reduces the postsynaptic neuron s probability to firing an action potential.
(c) Temporal Summation: The presynaptic neuron can influence the postsynaptic neuron by changing
the frequency of the stimulus.

Why Is Jfk Assassination Important
The assassination of JFK was a historic moment in US history because he was the president of the
united states and he had been shot on his way to a speech in Dallas, Texas. This always shows us what
can really happen and how people are crazy. He had ended up dying in the hospital that he had been

  • 2. Golden Age Of Piracy Research Paper Pirate Essay Pirates to most people resemble an iconic stereotype. This is that hollywood image that depicts pirates wearing eyepatches, walking with wooden legs, and out in the sea searching for treasure. Although some of these aspects resemble a Pirate the history of Pirates and Piracy in the sea is quite interesting. Piracy in the sea dates back long ago around the 2nd century BC. According to the website Famous Pirates the authors state that Piracy came into existence shortly after the creation of first organized naval trading. This would make sense since these merchant ships would carry valuable goods around unprotected. Meaning that eventually somebody would figure out that it s possible to raid these ships and loot all of the the valuables. Piracy carried on for several centuries, seeing activity in the Mediterranean, and even in Southeast Asia. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is the period that most of us are familiar with because it starred piracy in the Caribbean. In the video The Golden Age of Piracy by Its History the host explains that after the Spanish conquered the Carribeans they had all this access to the valuable resources on the islands for themselves. Other world powers such as the English, the French, and the Dutch also wanted apart of this treasure. The English, French, and Dutch decided to hire Privateers to attack the Spanish Merchant Ships ultimately trying to deprive Spain of their resources. For example, in the article Piracy in the Caribbean the authors stated that Pirates were also given legal status . . . privateers were used in the Caribbean by rival nations to attack treasure ships heading back to their home country. Basically saying, Piracy actually became legal for a period of time and was encouraged by world powers at the time. • 4. Valley Forge Dbq Essay The war was very tough, men fought hard, we gave it our all. But war at this time wasn t our biggest worries... it was our base, set at Valley Forge. It was like something out of a movie, conditions were horrible, freezing, no shelter, little supply of food or water, men are dying, disease is getting around... this is when times were horrible. George Washington our leader has 11,000 men on his back, but what Valley Forge is doing will decrease our numbers fast. The early winter not only affected us but when spring came everything thawed and created mud so deep we could barely get to our destination. Should I even re enlist? Of course I should! It s wrong to quit, I am going to stay loyal to my country and fight for what s right! I will re enlist. The first reason I am reenlisting is because many of our soldiers and men are dying. In document C it states how bad the weather was and how crucial it was. Valley Forge had the worst weather seen in the winter. Temperatures are very critical and fatal to our men. It doesn t help that our shelter is the worst, barely any heat to keep us warm. Just horrible conditions and too harsh for our men. Our men are falling and so are numbers, losing many men. Yes the British is the best Army in the world but we can show them, they don t know what s coming. My central idea is how Spinoza s idea of God brings a new perspective on existence to those who take the time to listen. Spinoza s Ethics and You I. Introduction A. What is the truth behind the universe? B. Many people have asked themselves this question over the course of history. C. Today, however, I am going to focus in on one individual and explore his work around this subject: Benedict de Spinoza. D. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 2. As a result, substances are also self caused, as no two substances can exist at the same time, nor can a substance create another substance. When something is created by something else, the original object s knowledge would depend and be determined by its creator, and would thus be unable to be a substance, as it is now dependent. 3. Substances are characterized by their attributes, or what one s intellect perceives as a way of defining that substance s essence Attributes are not outright accurate ways of defining a substance, but instead act as way to conceptualize a substance in many different ways. 4. Now that we can conceptualize a substance, we can now attempt to understand Spinoza s idea that there is only one substance. (TRANSITION) B. 2. The reason why we cannot perceive the one substance is because that one substance has and infinite number of attributes, which express an infinite essence, and thus becomes the encompassing everything. (air quotes) 3. The everything we perceive are the modes of the one substance, and thus shows how there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Life Aquatic With Steve Zizzou Analysis The magic of film is that it can tightly control what the viewer sees. A camera s ability to let directors decide what is explicitly shown and what is merely implied makes it a powerful storytelling tool. The average director wishes to immerse the viewer as much as possible, using lavish special effects and high tech equipment to hide the artificiality of the film under a thick layer of polish. When a film breaks this immersion it is usually considered to be a technical or creative failure. Other films for various reasons decide to deliberately either break the viewers immersion or never immerse them in the first place. A good example of one of these deliberately false films is The Life Aquatic with Steve Zizzou, directed by Wes Anderson in 2004. Without giving much detail it is the story of Steve Zizzou (portrayed by Bill Murray,) a documentarist and oceanographer who vows to avenge a comrade who was allegedly killed by a jaguar shark. However though the course of the film it is revealed that the eponymous character is not the knowledgeable adventurer that he claims to be, in fact being an incompetent hack more concerned with wealth and prestige than anything else. Though Zizzou s films appear to have adequate production values it is revealed that much of it is inaccurate or even fabricated for the sake of showmanship. Anderson uses broken immersion as a metacommentary or analogy of the fake nature of Zizzou s documentaries and his phony persona. An excellent example of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Is A Human Need 1. My product, despite not servicing a human need, is very useful as a want product. Many people, especially in a highly industrialized, fastpaced society, look for a way to relax and unwind after a day s work, something which often comes from the use of alcohol. Because Belgians are hardworking, urban people, it is important that at the end of the day they have a bit of a reward for all their work, even if this means one relaxing whiskey on the rocks. 2. As mentioned in the previous stage, in Canada and the United States the target market for Canadian Club is very specific. Here, it is marketed as a manly drink, and mainly sold to middleaged and elderly males. In Belgium, because of the egalitarian view within the country, it would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unlike many countries where the use of alcohol is rare or prohibited due to the prominence of a certain religion (i.e. Iran), there are technically no issues with the use of alcohol in Belgium. However, as will be expanded on later, during the six weeks of what Catholics call Holy Lent before Easter, many people participate in a ritual where a part of a person s diet is given up voluntarily in order to make way for increased spirituality. During this time, some of the people who still practice Lent (of which there are already quite few) may choose to give up alcohol. Otherwise, the use of the product does not interfere with the popular beliefs in the country in any way. With only 5 percent of the population being Muslim, and and an even smaller 0.3 percent being Orthodox Christian (they also practice Lent), the popular view of alcohol in Belgium is a generally positive one. In fact, Belgium itself is one of the world s largest producers of beer, which indicates the general opinion surrounding the topic of alcohol. 6. Canadian Club is mainly unique in two ways. Firstly, its obviously foreign name, which already gives it an edge in the Belgian market. Because it is a distinctly Canadian product, customers may view it as something exotic and different from other products available. Secondly, as mentioned earlier, Canadian Club is marketed as a product of exceptional quality, putting it ahead of many other competitors of worse quality. 7. Belgium s current topselling ... • 9. Disadvantages And Disadvantages Of Diversity In The United... Not everyone in the United States have the same opportunities as others. This causes there to be separate groups and organizations who have different advantages than the other groups. The disadvantages that these other groups have can affects their lives drastically. Some of these advantages and disadvantage are caused by privilege Privilege is the benefits you get from belonging to a certain group. Being privileged could result in many advantages in life. Essentially if you were born a male you have a better advantage than a woman would. Men has the luxury to get payed more than women do and they don t have to worry about being raped by just walking down the street. Another advantage of being privileged in being born white. Being born caucasian or African American isn t something that you can control, however the opportunities they get sometimes are based upon the color of their skin. In the past years, there has been an ongoing trend that haven t been changed. Caucasians have been getting better jobs and better opportunities than people of color. There are certain jobs out there today that mainly hire white males; this is because they re known to be superior and dominant in the U.S. However not everyone seeing this issue because they are blinded by their privileges. One was born in New Zealand and the other in the United States during the late 19th century. This paper will compare and contrast the setting, plot, imagery, climax, and theme between Mansfield s Miss Brill and Hemmingway s Cat in the Rain. The setting in Miss Brill takes place in a public garden in France. The story states the band plays in the Jardins Publiques (Public Gardens) in France (15). She whispered over and over The Brute! The Brute! (16). She was also unimpressed by a beautiful woman that passed by. She dropped some violets, which a young boy picked up and gave back to her. However Miss Brill see s the woman throw the flowers away. She exclaims, Dear me! (16). Miss Brill views the events as a play as if she is an actress. Each individual have their parts. Even the fur she wears around her head has a part in the play. Mansfield advises, It was exactly like a play. Who could believe the sky at the back wasn t painted? (17). In contrast, the characters in the plot of Cat in the Rain are limited to the American couple, a cat, the padrone, and a maid. The American wife sees a cat from her window. Hemingway states, A cat was crouched under one of the dripping green tables (62). She desires to retrieve the cat against the indifference of her husband. • 11. Funerals And Death Rituals In American Culture Funerals are a dark, gloomy, and sometimes emotional subject for many people. Death rituals like funerals are times where we as a community come together to mourn someone s loss; it is depressing and often turbulent. But we often overlook the positive aspects of events like these in favor of their negative ones. We can t ignore the grief that comes with funerals and loss, but we can investigate how funerals are beneficial to those trying to cope with bereavement. In fact, funerals and death rites have many psychological benefits. This is pervasive to grief rituals no matter the culture or the time period: for example, the people of Ancient Greece and the people of modern day America. As humans, it is in our nature to perform rituals on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Ancient Greece, for example, there were two main practices for dealing with loss: tombstones and lamentation. The earliest Greek tombstones found dated back to the Hellenistic period (323 31 BCE). They were mildly expensive, and as such most belonged to the middle class. Emotional expressions on the stones were evident through the use of elements of personal significance to the deceased. These emotional expressions were most commonly found on children s graves, and in the form of things like short biographical inscriptions or depictions of their favorite toys (Melin). Lamentation was the central death ritual in the world of Ancient Greece. The earliest evidence of it was in the Mycenaean period (1600 1100 BCE), on painted sarcophagi and clay figurines. A lament was without exception done by a woman, either a professional lamentress or a close relative of the deceased. It was considered an art form, a mixture of an improvised theater performance and a song, and addressed both the dead and the living (Stevanovic). In addition to the performer being considered an artist, she was also considered to have the role of a witch or a shaman because of how she acted as an intermediary between worlds. Emotional intensity was always present in a lament, the performer going so far as to mutilate herself by scratching and beating herself (Sijakovic). Furthermore, because women had such a powerful role in the Ancient Greece grieving process, they had a certain power over death. It was for this reason that in the sixth century, laws were passed against lamentation in some city states, like the Solonian Laws. The laws were not really about the lamentation, but more about suppressing women because many were fearful of the power they seemed to hold (Sijakovic, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For example, in the United States, income per capita has increase since 1950, yet the percentage of respondents who say they are very happy has not increase, and the percentage who says they are not very happy has not declined significantly. (Lee) Similar disconnects between happiness and income has been found in Japan, The United Kingdom, and continental Europe. Two explanations are often offered. The first explanation is that any additional happiness from more income results primarily from increasing our relative income, but we can increase our relative income only by reducing the relative income of others, which reduces their happiness. The second explanation is that the pursuit of money becomes addictive and reduces the time available for family and friends, intellectual pursuits, exercise and other activities that result in genuine happiness and, it is claimed, do not reduce the happiness of others. Happiness and money are not linked. A person can be really rich and be totally unhappy. Also a person can be really poor and be happy. Money can bring ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It s later revealed that this is quite the opposite of what it really is. A dystopia. Along with Jonas, the reader finds out how in Jonas s community they they give the elderly and newborns lethal injections, constrict feelings, and prevent any form of decision making. When Jonas discovers these things through memories, he is distraught, and he has the right to be. He wants to show everyone what has been taken away from them, and what they are being lied to about. I ve tuned over many of them to you in the past year. And I can t take them back. There s no way for me to get them back if I have given them to you. So if you escape, once you are gone and, Jonas, you know that you can never return Jonas nodded solemnly. It was the terrifying part. Yes, he said, I know. But if you come with me The Giver shook his head and made a gesture to silence him. He continued. If you get away, if you get beyond, if you get to elsewhere, it will mean that the community has to bear the burden themselves, of the memories you have been holding for them. When Jonas left, the all of his memories were released back into the community. Doing this, brought them many new memories of pain, death, love, color and more. Pg. 147 There s a little female with pale eyes. But she s only a six. That s correct. I know the one you mean. Her name is Katharine. But she s too young. So they (referring to the community) will be forced to bear those memories. By leaving the community, Jonas placed the burden of his memories onto the community. Doing this, hopefully showed the community all the things that had been taken away from them. He pushed firmly again at the pedal with his foot and continued riding along the road. It was not safe to spend time looking back. He thought of the rules he had broken so far: enough that if he were caught, now, he would be condemned. Leonid Fridman s Essay America Needs Its Nerds In his essay America Needs Its Nerds , author Leonid Fridman discusses the stigma against so called nerds and how these nerds are essential to America in keeping up with other countries. He does this providing several examples. However, this essay is ultimately weak because of the broadness of his examples, as well as the overarching strawman he creates to represent society . By relying solely on these examples, he creates a very simple one sided argument To begin the essay, Fridman states that our society is one which has only derogatory terms like nerd and geek for the intellectually curious and academically serious (lines 2 4). As a broad statement, this holds true. However, in the context of having a living person with a brain being the audience, this crumbles. Nerd and geek defined by Fridman ... Fridman then states that at Harvard University, an Ivy league university known for its prestigiousness, that anti intellectualism is rampant . He provides an example saying that most students are ashamed of how much they study, but his lack of concrete evidence for this example makes it seem extremely unlikely. This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart, I have had a few family diagnosed with cancer. Most of them are now in remission and I did lose a two family members that lost their battle. I think if more people became knowledgeable about cancer, we maybe can find a cure in the near future. I will explain how I analyzed the knowledge of the random audience that I selected to partake in my survey. The key terms and definitions that I will be using are: statistics, mean, median, mode, standard deviation, range, and population standard deviation. Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data in order to make decisions. The mean of a data set is the sum of the data entries divided by the number of entries. The median of a data set is the value that lies in the middle of the data when the data set is ordered. The mode of a data set is the data entry that occurs with the greatest frequency. Standard deviation is a quantity calculated to indicate the extent of deviation for a group as a whole. The range of a data set is the difference between the maximum and minimum data entries in the set. In this version, the song is updated from a classical style to an alternative rock and roll from the 50 s. The Reigning Sound uses different instrumentation than the covers done by Lena Horne and Royal Crown Revue. The instrumentation used by Reigning Sound, includes guitars, electric bases, keyboards, drums and possibly other instruments. Using these types of instruments gives the song more appeal to the young generations that have a taste for classic rock. It should have a deeper message that will impact me in one way or another. 2. At least one character should be emotionally relatable, and the experiences that the character goes through should also be realistic and relatable. 3. There should be at least some symbolism in the movie that foreshadows an event/ multiple events. Next, when Ben reaches the exit of the airport, the camera stops following him, and he gets lost in the crowd, another similar situation occurs when Ben goes to Elaine s college to meet her he gets lost in the crowd. These scenes connect to the scene when his parents take him downstairs from his room to meet all the guests at the party and everyone crowds around him, leaving him with no personal space. When Ben tries to leave the party and go upstairs, a lady pulls him down. This scene symbolizes how whenever Ben tries to escape the prison or pull himself up, someone or his own anxiety and worries pull him back down. Another interesting way that Mike Nichols used symbolism is through the color scheme. He chose to use neutrals with a lot of gray and black throughout the movie the clothes, walls, rooms, carpets. The color gray is an unemotional color. It is detached, neutral, impartial and indecisive this color symbolizes how Ben is feeling throughout the movie. He seems completely detached from all the happy scenes and the only emotions he shows are of loneliness and isolation. Another way the colors were used in the movie was through the constant high contrast of black and white good versus bad, innocence versus evil. Most of the time, Mrs. Robinson is seen wearing black clothes, symbolizing her negative behavior and actions, whereas Elaine is always wearing white, and her room is all white too, symbolizing her innocence and positive ... The atmosphere is different, and many students are on their own after they make that college choice. Being hundreds of miles away from home can put stress on the student. Once they feel this stress, grades and the confidence of the student go down. From the Education Partnerships Inc., they state The best preparation for college is still a solid high opportunity to develop academic and study skills that can help assure college success (1). These students need help by trying to figure out a solution that can best fit their needs. For students to get a higher education they need to accommodate special learning skills that will enlighten the students mind into getting a degree they want. High school students who learn how to collaborate with these particular skills will end up going to a college of their choice, get a better GPA, and have a higher paying job as a reward for the hard work that they showed. High school students who are juniors or seniors are told that college or real life is right around the corner, and don t take those last few months for granted. Many opportunities are ... • 35. Using Creative Problem Solving Assignment Analysis Using Creative Problem Solving: It is very challenging to be creative while you are under immense pressure. I know this far too well while working on various political campaigns. My responsibilities as Absentee Ballot Coordinator required me to be creative as possible encouraging and collecting absentee ballots within a specific timeframe. While working on Delegate Anderson s campaign, I had to engineer a way to deploy the greatest amount of absentee ballots while maintaining an aggressive program to ensure these ballots were successfully submitted in before the deadline. I had immense pressure on me and my program as I was reminded how the delegate squeezed victory from defeat in his first election because of absentee voting. I do not ... This election was slated to happen by way of a special election as the sitting Supervisor was up for a Judgeship and thusly had to vacate his political position. Knowing the sitting Supervisor would have to vacate his position immediately after confirmation by the State Legislature and understanding Prince William County s rule about having to fill a vacant Board seat within 60 days, I understood that we had a very small window to officially campaign for the seat. I had to make sure we fundraised well, had the right materials, staff, and volunteers, acquired key business and political backing, and had established a high name ID before the State did Judge confirmations. This would allow for a smooth and effective roll out of the Jacob s Campaign that would ultimately secure victory. Thinking this process would only last around four months; I budgeted and created a campaign strategy for this time frame. The problem came within the State Government. July 1st, 2014 was the deadline the State Legislature had to pass a budget or the Virginia Government would shut down. This budget would include funding for new state judges thus allowing judicial appointments to occur igniting our race. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Creationism Question Essay In a historical context, creationism versus the theory of evolution has always been a hotly contested subject, one of the major breakthroughs being when Darwin publicized his theory of evolution. When Darwin published his theory of evolution in 1859, his book was considered a major technological breakthrough at that time. The seeming proof that a God didn t exist created a catalyst, where creationism was replaced with an almost atheism, because the existence of evolution counteracted society s belief in God. In the article The Evolution Controversy: Who s Fighting with Whom about What? While one could argue that the sentiment is religiously biased, it does connect scientific paths to a specific section in the bible, which verifies that creationism theories are rooted in science. • 38. Analysis Of The Book If The Chronicles Of Narnia If The Chronicles of Narnia is read in chronological order, C.S. Lewis introduces Polly Plummer as his first main female character in The Magician s Nephew. However, the title indicates this story is not about her; it is about Digory, the magician s nephew. She explores and travels with Digory as his friend, but her involvement in the story is mainly seen through her impact on Digory s perspective and decisions. Nevertheless, by the same feminist ideology that declares each person prove her own merit, the strength of Polly s characterization should be measured on its own. To suggest, as Susan Henthrone does in The Image of Woman in the Fiction of C.S. Lewis, that Polly s role as a supporting character means that she is not a strong character is to do a disservice to her distinctive characterization. Digory s indignation at Uncle Andrew s sexist manipulations and comments serves to undermine the conception that Lewis, as a narrator, undervalues Polly simply because of her gender. To get Digory to go to what he calls the Other World, Uncle Andrew tricks Polly into putting on the green ring that will transport her without giving her the ring that would bring her back. It would be easy to assume, from Digory s initial condemnation of Andrew in the exclamation that he behaved like a coward, sending a girl into a place you re afraid to go yourself (Lewis, 25), that Lewis implies that Polly s gender, and some inherent weakness therein, makes Andrew s trickery truly ... • 41. The Death Of The Author By Roland Barthes And Michel Foucault Throughout many different mediums such as literature and music there have been many controversial pieces written in regards to the true meaning and purpose of authorship. Several French philosophers such as Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault have written essays on the purpose of authorship. Roland Barthes, writer of The Death of the Author , has a strong belief in the removal of the author from a piece. Barthes believed that once a book has been written there is no more author but instead a scriptor and text which are both born simultaneously. Meaning that the text is a living tissue for the scriptor(reader) to interpret for themselves, leaving a text with multiple meanings dependent on a scriptors interpretation. On the other hand, French philosopher, Michel Foucault believed that the author is a key aspect to a written work. He believed that without an author a work would have no true meaning in essence leaving everything up for debate which ultimately results in confusion. Foucault also believed that removing the author from a text serves no purpose and as such, should not be done. Similarly, an author is a very important aspect in music as well because musicians are able to bridge gaps between them and their listeners through lyricism. Artists are able to do this by incorporating narratives in their music allowing them to narrate their lives which may include hardships and difficulties that they have gone through, which allows for connections to be made between the author and a listener who has gone through the same experiences. For example, artists such as 21 Savage speak about gang violence and poverty in their music which allows them to shed light on such issues in order to raise public awareness. The rap artist 21 Savage, also known as 21, has written many songs which have very deep lyrical meanings to them. For example 21 Savage wrote the song Famous in which he describes his life prior to and after his rise to fame. In the song 21 Savage discusses how he used to be less fortunate but is now doing well by stating the following, Rags to riches, n***a came from the bottom/Hood rats, now a n***a f***in on models/Ridin in the foreign, remember ridin on MARTA (21 Savage). Both reincarnation and Karma ideas are merged to stipulate that the thoughts and actions within an individual s present life will play an important role in determining the condition of soul s future existences. There is, therefore, a cause and effect of every action. The motivation of religious and moral activities in Hinduism is to accumulate good Karma so as to free oneself from baneful material thus liberating the soul from the cycle of rebirth (Fisher and Rinehart, 77). According to the idea of rebirth, death only relates to the physical body but the soul continues and is reborn into another body. The continuing worldly existence, the samsara, thus refers to the cycle of repeated births. As already mentioned, reincarnation is dictated by the law of Karma. According to Hinduism, Karma is the law of cosmos leading to the absolute reality (Fisher and Rinehart, 78). The doctrine of Karma sets the world of justice making every action to have an outcome. The idea of having a similar exterior equating to a similar background is detrimental and creates a lot of distance between social locations because it perpetuates stereotyping and essentialism. If you rely on looks and other identifying factors you will miss much of the person, as people are always more than just one thing they identify, or have been identified as. Misunderstanding creates distance because it leads people to retreat back into their own communities that they recognize and know and perpetuates stereotypes of identities. I think it is possible to diminish these distances by creating diaglogue between groups of people who identify differently than eachother. Much can be said for facilitating discussion amongst people of different backgrounds. It can aid in helping people gain a deeper understanding of one another and it allows a free exchange of emotions and ideas that in the end bridge the gap between communities. Tyranny Dbq Essay When the founding fathers realized that the Articles of Confederation just were not working for their country, they gathered in Philadelphia in 1787 to write a new constitution. The Americans feared tyranny in the government like what they had seen under the rule of King George III. The Constitution was written with specific protections against tyranny as described by James Madison: tyranny is the accumulation of all powers... in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many . The Constitution guarded against tyranny by separating powers, allowing the branches to check the other branches, and giving states both equal representation and representation based on population. The first guard against tyranny was the separation of powers between the three branches of federal government and the states which means that each has its own specific powers and the powers not given to the federal government are given to the states. According to document A the federal government can conduct foreign relations, regulate trade, make immigration laws, print money, declare war, and set up post offices. The maneuvers that this cultural mainstay has made surely outdo many that other practices have made over the centuries. How the theater progressed through time and adjusted itself in order to accommodate more people and more ideas, to reach its audience in times of despair and to provide an unequitable entertainment value, are all important aspects related to why and how the theater has always been so successful and played a large part in the transition from the stage to film. The goal of this research is not to analyze the transition that the times and technology provided, but to analyze the different institutions and efforts both the United States government and the British parliament put forth to comfort and aid its people in times of strife; namely The Great Depression. This paper will look specifically at the government interventions in the theater in the United States and the lack of government intervention in Great Britain and compare the outcomes that sent both countries on surprisingly the same path. This test also will show if hot or cold water affect the time of the chemical reaction. The experiment will show if reactants are broken down into smaller particles can the chemical reactions speed up, the increase of CO2 at ten second intervals. This will be done using an experiment with Alka seltzer tablets, varying their physical composition and timing the release of CO2 over ten second intervals. Alka Seltzer tablets have ingredients that help with indigestion, stomach aches, headaches, and inflammation. • 47. 8 Factors That Can Influence The Potential On Postsynaptic... 1. The following are 8 factors that can influence the potential on the postsynaptic membrane: (a) Excitatory Postsynaptic Potentials (EPSPs): EPSPs increase the postsynaptic neuron s likelihood to generate an action potential by generating a local depolarization. EPSPs result from excitatory stimuli, such as an excitatory neurotransmitter (Glutamate) released by the presynaptic neuron. Excitatory stimuli will bind and open ligand gated Na+ channels, allowing Na+ ions to move inside a cell down their concentration gradient. The influx of Na+ ions will cause a local depolarization at the postsynaptic membrane, which if summated can reach threshold and fire an action potential. (b) Inhibitory Postsynaptic Potentials (IPSPs): EPSPs decrease the postsynaptic neuron s likelihood to generate an action potential by generating a local hyperpolarization. EPSPs result from inhibitory stimuli such as an inhibitory neurotransmitter (GABA) released by the presynaptic neuron. Inhibitory stimuli can bind and open ligand gated K+ channels and Cl channels, allowing K+ ions to move out of a cell and allowing Cl ions to move into a cell down their concentration gradient. The influx of Cl ions and the outflux of K+ ions causes a local hyperpolarization at the postsynaptic membrane, which reduces the postsynaptic neuron s probability to firing an action potential. (c) Temporal Summation: The presynaptic neuron can influence the postsynaptic neuron by changing the frequency of the stimulus. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
