Social Inequality In Ralph Ellison s Battle Royal
In Battle Royal before the large fight, the party is delighted with a stark nude dancer. Ellison presents
the woman in such a way that the reader feels sorry for her just as they do with the narrator. She along
with the narrator are both symbols of social inequality experienced before the civil rights movement,
where both are abused due to their social niche (the dancer as a woman, and the narrator as an African
American). This social inequality is brought forth in an exaggerative way to show that both these
things likely occurred in the period, and that they suffer through many other such injustices
throughout their normal lives. One of Battle Royal s main purposes was to provide an insight into the
pre Civil Rights era (which was the current time for Ellison) and exemplify the human atrocities that
occurred. The short story shows the ways in which the white ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

After all the men had made it into the room she began to dance, a slow sensuous movement; the
smoke of a hundred cigars clinging to her like the thinnest of veils (522). Her overt sexualization at
the hands of the men in the room is easily comparable with the racism directed toward the narrator in
the story. Following her dancing she is quickly rushed upon and tossed her as college boys are tossed
at a hazing, causing terror and disgust in her eyes as her soft breasts seemed to flatten against the air
and her legs flung wildly as she spun (522). The narrator directly compares this terror felt by the
woman being manhandled with the terror he is experiencing in leu of the fight and speech. These two
extreme examples show how unfairly and disgracefully both woman and African Americans were seen
at the time. Only a few generations from the abolishment of slavery, popular culture, especially in the
south continued to look down upon these two groups as objects, in a sexual and racial

Teen Drug Abuse
Did you know that the teen Drug and Alcohol abuse rate have increased over the past 10 years? 1 out
of every 10 teens use non prescribed prescription drugs. Teens are abusing drugs and using them as
relief outlets. They often start using the drugs under peer pressure, to cope with a problem or to cope
with depression. People can find different ways to cope and quit their addictive habits and find
something different to do. You become 5% more likely to become addicted in adulthood. Studies have
shown that you are 3% more likely to self harm. Drug abuse under ages of 18 can permanently affect
and change your brain. It can cause you to be delusional and can t remember what happened when you
were under the influence. It causes you to do poorly in school , diminishes good performance and can
keep you from being employed. It can also cost you your life if you are driving under the influences.
Studies have shown that 467,000 kids ages 12 17 have used the drugs for nonmedical purposes and
168,000 claim to be addicted. (http://www.projectknow.com/research/fentanyl and teens/ )
Teen drug abuse causes endangerment to yourself and others. When you are under the influence of
Alcohol and drugs your mind doesn t function the same. Studies have shown that drivers under the age
of 21 are behind 17% of most of the the fatal alcohol related car accidents. Which is about 2,000
underage drinkers a year behind the wheel. Which means there are about 200,000 trips to the ER. In
many cases the kids

The Current Rate Of Adoption
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY
An oft heard phrase in education has become both a directive and a duty for educators: We must meet
students where they are. This phrase refers to an obligation to meet students needs by matching
instructional methods to their levels and preferences. In this era of rapid technological innovation and
change, many students have embraced the use of Social Networking Sites (SNS) such as Facebook
and spend much of their time in its virtual spaces. Despite its popularity with college students, it is
unclear if university faculty educators feel that SNSs are appropriate places to go to meet their
students needs. This study seeks to explore this question by comparing faculty and students as to their

211). While many SNSs are in the early stages of development, the adoption of the concept has been
rapid. The study proposed here focuses specifically on the adoption of SNSs by students and faculty in
higher education.
Though SNSs have attained remarkable popularity, Facebook has become the most popular,
particularly among people of ages 17 to 25 (Melber, 2008). Recent studies indicate that the number of
older users is increasing rapidly (Kirkpatrick, 2009), but currently more than 90% of college students
have a Facebook account (Haywoode, 2010; Loveland, 2011). Thus, the substantial number of college
students using this technology has compelled many educators to wonder if there are potential benefits
for the use of Facebook to support education.
According to Santovex (2006), colleges and universities can use Facebook to engage students
academically and build relationships with faculty (p. 5). As retention has become a focal point for
many universities, several studies have suggested methods for universities to manage retention more
effectively. John N. Gardner, founder and senior fellow of the National Resource Center for The First
Year Experience and Students in Transitions, has visited many campuses, proposing to student affairs
professionals that involvement and sense of connectedness

Strategic Game Glo-Bus
Financial Ratios Used In GLO BUS
Profitability Ratios (as reported on pages 2 and 6 of the GLO BUS
Statistical Review)
Earnings per share (EPS) is defined as net income divided by the number of shares of stock issued to
stockholders. Higher EPS values indicate the company is earning more net income per share of stock
outstanding. Because EPS is one of the five performance measures on which your company is graded
(see p. 2 of the GSR) and because your company has a higher EPS target each year, you should
monitor EPS regularly and take actions to boost EPS. One way to boost EPS is to pursue actions that
will raise net income (the numerator in the formula for calculating EPS). A second means of boosting
EPS is to repurchase shares of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Companies having the highest ratios of production costs to net revenues are likely to be caught in a
profit squeeze, with margins too small to cover delivery, marketing, and administrative costs and
interest costs and still have a comfortable margin for profit. Production costs at such companies are
usually too high relative to the price they are charging (their strategic options for boosting profitability
are to cut costs, raise prices, or try to make up for thin margins by somehow selling additional units).
The percentage of delivery costs for cameras to net sales revenues. This ratio is calculated by dividing
total delivery costs by net revenues (where net revenues represent the dollars received from camera
sales, after exchange rate adjustments and any promotional discounts). A low percentage of delivery
costs to net revenues is preferable to a higher percentage, indicating that a smaller proportion of
revenues is required to cover delivery costs (which leaves more room for covering other costs and
earning a bigger profit on each unit sold). The percentage of total marketing costs for cameras to net
sales revenues. This ratio is calculated by dividing total marketing costs by net revenues (where net
revenues represent the dollars received from camera sales, after exchange rate adjustments and any

Male Gaze
A challenge that faces both Canadian cinema and women s cinema is the idea of the male gaze. The
film industry is a phallocentric institution that since its inception has always faced the problem of
objectifying women. As well Canada has faced similar problems long before the existence of film in
the form of the colonial gaze, with attempts from both Britain and France to take what Canada had to
offer and make it its own. In the film Away From Her (2006) Sarah Polley recognizes this problem
that the gaze has on both the identity of women and Canada in film, and tries to express these
problems by foregrounding the gaze to show it in a way that is unusual. This essay looks to explore
the various ways that Polley uses the gaze in order to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the book Women Filmmakers Refocusing E. Ann Kaplan mentions For complex socio political
reasons... women were rarely able to direct films during the classical period, when famous male
auteurs such as Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford, Fritz Lang, and Nicholas Ray accomplished some of
their most brilliant work. Secondly, with Polley taking control of the gaze, the objects that she points
the gaze toward will act differently due to the castration behind the camera. Cinematographer Zoe
Dirse mentions an account she had when filming a Sufi parade for a documentary in Cairo. She quotes
the men seem curious, staring directly into my lens (curious at the camera or my gender) and then
suddenly the look changes and I feel danger as they start to push and shove... . On the other hand
when Dirse is filming women she quotes: The two women seem totally oblivious to the camera. Is it
because the gender of the bearer of the look is female and the subjects feel safe and not threatened?
Later, gypsies sing and perform to my hand held camera with abandon and pleasure, their faces and
gestures open to my inviting lens, allowing me to capture the sadness and joy in this ancient love song

This experience of Dirse s proves the power of gender behind the lens to create situations that could
not be replicated if a man had control of the gaze. Although Polley is not the physical operator of the
camera, she is still in a

Difference Between Tourism And Hotel Consortia
Tourism and Hospitality Consortia
There are many different types of consortiums. There are the tourist attraction consortia, travel agency
consortia and hotel consortia, which will be discussed in greater detail.
Being a part of consortiums is considered one of the greatest ways in marketing and selling your
products. Hotel marketing chains have very impressive hotel chains such as best western which
operates about 4100 hotels and hostels and its corporate headquarters is based in Phoenix, Arizona.
A hotel consortium is a shared association where the hotels are achieving mutual goals. Hotel
consortia has significantly developed and grown over the past two decades. For small and independent
hotels consortia is a primary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Persuasive Essay On Gun Shootings
n July 18, 1984, eight month Carlos Reyes and his mother, Jackie, was killed by an unemployed
father. Along with Carlos, 21 innocent people were killed at the McDonald s located in San Ysidro,
California. Carlos is the youngest victim to gun violence till this date. His death is the result of the
killer having easy access to a semiautomatic pistol and a shotgun (Berkowitz et al, 2017). Ryan
Frazier, the 21 year old husband of Emily Frazier, shot himself with a semiautomatic gun he bought
from a gas station in November 2008 after confronting his teenage nightmare for a lawsuit. He was
molested by a priest and his first time using a gun was to end his own life, despite having a whole
future ahead of him (Drexle, 2016). Carlos and Ryan are one of the many few that lose their lives from
guns. They represent the stories of victims who have died after the trigger was pulled. With guns being
readily available, everyone has the licenses to kill at any point in time, whether the pain is inflicted on
others or themselves. Imagine if these were stories of your own family members or friends. According
to our Founding Fathers, our second amendment should not be infringed and that people have the
rights to keep and bear arms. However, because the United States is the number one country with
mass shootings and suicide is the number one cause of gun deaths, it is necessary for our second
amendment to be infringed and regulated in order to stop more people from losing their lives. Pro gun

Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer s Day By Anne Bradstreet...
Love is such a strong word that we sometimes use it to the best of our ability. While reading I was
very intrigued by two poems that I feel was wrote more so on the love side and trying to show or I
would say express themselves through the poem. The poems Shall I compare thee to a summer s day?
by William Shakespeare and To My Dear and Loving Husband by Anne Bradstreet are two poems I
feel is trying to express love, but in two totally different ways. The poems are bringing meaning to the
word love and showing that it doesn t have to be used only to show a connection between two
different people, but it can be used in other ways as well.
In the poem Shall I compare thee to a summer s day? By William Shakespeare, the author is showing
his love through nature. He is actually comparing every little thing he feels is right about his
companion to something in nature. He says, Thou art more lovely and more temperate. From this the
author is saying one s love is more lovable and is hotter than summer. He then goes on to say, Rough
winds do shake the darling buds of May. He is saying that before summer comes its spring time and
the windy weather is knocking all of the buds off the flowers and making them new, so he is she is
more better now that they have gone through a rough time before. After that he says, And summer s
lease hath all too short a date. He means by this that the summer time goes by very fast, so they have
to savor every moment together during this time while

The Importance Of Sea Temperature Anomalies
The oceans play an important role in the climate system owing to the interannual and longer timescale
variability in sea surface temperature (SST). Hasselmann (1976) proposed that this climate variability
could be represented by a stochastic first order auto regressive process
(AR1 process) and should be considered as the null hypothesis for extra tropical sea surface
temperature anomalies (SSTA). According to this concept, SSTAs quickly responds to the atmospheric
heat fluxes at short time period and the heat capacity of the ocean integrates the
SSTA variability on a longer time period. Frankignoul and Hasselmann (1977) have further suggested
that the atmospheric forcing for SST anomalies follows a spectrum of white noise with constant ...

Thus the broad structure of the SSTA spectrum is determined by the depth of the ocean ML and
atmospheric process.
Attempts to include additional processes, such as Ekman transport, entrainment of sub mixed layer
thermal anomalies (Dommenget and Latif 2002; Deser et al. 2003; Lee et al. 2008), state dependent
noise (Sura et al. 2005) and the re emergence associated with seasonal change in MLD (Schneider and
Cornuelle 2005) has shown to increase the SSTA variance at annual and longer timescales. However,
studies have demonstrated that the SST variability at some part of the oceans cannot be represented by
a simple AR1 process (Hall and Manabe
1997; Dommenget and Latif 2002, 2008). The inconsistency arises from the exchange of heat energy
in the mixed layer and sub mixed layer in the ocean.
The strong seasonal cycle of the MLD can strengthen the persistence of SSTA from one winter to the
following. The timescale in which the subsurface temperature anomalies entrain to the surface (nearly
1 year) is expected to influence the spectral variance of SSTA. Möller et al. (2008) have shown a peak
in the annual time period in the power spectrum of midlatitude
SSTA that is associated with the re emergence. Figure 5.3 illustrates the power spectrum of
SSTA and 90% significance level (shaded), presented in different ways (taken from Moller et al.
(2008)). Figure 5.3a express the spectral variance density, while figure 5.3b

Michael Jackson Sang The Famous Line, If You Wan Na Make...
If humanity takes the time to sit down and internalize, one of the questions coming to mind has to do
with why is it often afraid of change? Change is in fact a big theme in the 1987 hit song The Man in
the Mirror (Appendix E), where the late artist Michael Jackson sang the famous line, If you wanna
make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change. Fast forward to a modern
day 2016 filled with political unrest, poverty, and waning human rights, Michael Jackson s message of
self reflection eventually translating into social change finds its relevancy today, despite the song s
thirty years old tenure. It introduces the notion that all individuals in society are essentially human,
even in spite of humanity s tendency to demonize other belief systems. Even Saint Mother Theresa
agreed with this point, once saying that if we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we
belong to each other. The only way to reconcile the fact that differences don t corrupt our humanity is
in society s willingness to be flexible to different points of view and recognize the structures of
prejudice in a modern context. What then is the harm in paring away our egos to realize that we all
have something to bring to the table? Forms of art that even attempt to evoke this message of
solidarity include poetry, which in itself is a free medium that poets utilize to express their thoughts
and emotions. Langston Hughes, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Maya Angelou, and

This paper should not only be of interest to P2P designers, but also to engineers at upper and lower tier
ISPs, who are interested in acquiring a thorough understanding of
P2P overlays and tra±c. Because P2P ¯le sharing systems can generate vast quantities of tra±c,
networking engineers, who dimension the network and introduce content distribution devices such as
caches, need a basic understanding of how major P2P ¯le sharing systems operate. Although there has
been recent work in analyzing the ¯le sharing workload in KaZaA [8] and [18], to our knowledge we
are the ¯rst to undertake a comprehensive study of a hierarchical unstructured overlay for a P2P
system.
The paper focuses on the KaZaA overlay network and index management. It ad dresses neither KaZaA
s downloading protocol (for example, KaZaA s parallel down loading and request queuing) nor its
incentive scheme for encouraging uploading. The paper is complementary to [8] and [18], which focus
on KaZaA ¯le sharing tra±c. It is also complementary to a recent measurement study on pollution in
P2P ¯le sharing systems [19].
This paper is organized as follows. Section 2 provides an overview of KaZaA.
Section 3 describes are measurement apparatus. Section 4 presents our measurement results. Section 5
sets forth basic design principles for unstructured P2P ¯le sharing applications. Section 6 surveys
related work. Finally, Section 7 summarizes our ¯ndings and concludes.

Effects Of Mongolian Westernization
Chapter 18 Winter Break Assignment
1. Timeline
2. How did the Mongol occupation affect Russian civilization?
The Mongols didn t affect the base of Russian culture because they left local administration to locals.
As the economy evolved to more emphasis on agriculture and peasant labor, the focus on literacy
declined.
3. What was the nature of Russian expansion under Ivan III and Ivan IV?
The reign of the Ivan III resulted in the formation of a new political structure that featured a
centralized government and became tsar of Russia. The Russian economy flourished during the time
of the Ivans due to the lots of new trade routes. During Ivan IV s time, many Russian nobles were
killed so that the throne could be kept for him.
4. What was the impact of Westernization under Peter I?
Peter I had a large impact on Russian westernization in many different aspects. For example, the
Russian army became a force in European power politics and was modernized along Western lines.
Peter I educated himself on concepts of construction and city planning from Manchester that he was
able to hire an army of men to help create Petersburg. Peter I introduced and enforced new social
etiquettes, dress codes, and grooming practices to help to blend with modern European culture. Peter I
imported new technologies through his life and visited several different countries to hire craftsmen to
come to Russia for shipbuilding. Peter built Russia s first navy.

A Search For True Identity
In a search for true identity, it is impossible to look at purely just the mind or just the body because a
persons identity lies beyond the physicality of one s reality. Many different debates have left people
baffled when it comes to defining one s identity or self. Descartes and Ghost in the shell explore in
depth the means of their self. Descartes often speaks about mind and body dualism in his meditations
and that the mind is separate. However when you look at the mind and body separately, you are left
with a dilemma; Observing one or the other by itself doesn t really get you anywhere. All of the
knowledge we acquire throughout our lives are connected to some other known idea or concept.
During one of his meditations, Descartes mentions, Nor should I think that I do not perceive the
infinite by means of a true idea, but only through a negation of the finite. Just as I perceive rest and
darkness by means of a negation through motion and light (Descartes 6.46). It is impossible to
comprehend what the mind is by looking at it solely; you have to put it in comparison with what a
body means. You cannot comprehend what a mind is just like how you cannot comprehend what a
body is until you put them in contrast or comparison with each other. Another way of looking at it is
by considering it a struggle with the concept of what a consciousness is defined by. When it is brought
into question what the self is, it is also peering into the idea of an awareness past the material

Human resource management development and strategic management enhanced by simulation

Peter R.J. Trim
Department of Management, Birkbeck College, University of London, London, UK

to meet the challenges of the marketplace, senior management needs to ensure that an organisation
employs highly skilled and well motivated staff, and there is a commitment to establishing a learning
organisation. Simulation exercises can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By thinking ahead, senior managers can implement a process that takes into account the strategic
thinking workshop approach put forward by Graetz, (2002, pp. 458 9). The advantage of this approach
will be realised when staff from around the world are brought together on a problem solving exercise.
It is also necessary to take into account the communicative skill gaps that exist and what type of
interpersonal skills are needed, and this is especially true in the ` context of decision making vis a vis
strategic alliances, for example (Trim and Lee, 2003). What needs to be understood, however, is how
individuals from different cultures relate to people from outside their cultural value system. The key
issues which surface are issues such as the appropriate way in which to communicate within the
organisation s hierarchy, and if necessary, how to communicate with government representatives.
Therefore, training and staff development personnel in international organisations need to identify
which ` type of simulation exercises will be most suitable for training staff vis a vis careers in an
international organisational setting. Human resource management specialists will, therefore, need to
develop staff development programmes that enable an individual employee to develop their skill base
continually. This means, according to Blunden (1997, p. 277), that an individual needs to develop an
ability to transfer his/her learning and skills from one situation to

Parapsychic Abilities Research Paper
If I could pick one superhuman ability, I would pick the ability to be parapsychic. Having psychic

I would have endless, infinite knowledge. I would be able to breach human conscience and delve deep
into the pits of human thinking. I could harbour the entirety of human intelligence into my own little
mind. Maybe this foreshadows imminent doom. But I cannot help but be tempted by all these what ifs

I would hold the lives of billions in my hands, and I could crush those lives with the slightest twitch.
That sheer power is so distant, it is almost unimaginable. For to have all the knowledge of the world
would mean to be like God, would it not? I could be benign, or I could be cruel, and absolutely
nothing could stand in my way. That absolute freedom of will is what attracts me, what drives me to
choose this ability. I could be anyone, do anything.
But I would not be free from conscience. Would conscience allow me to execute these selfish
pleasures? These unthinkable deeds? I take back what I said, for conscience of mind is the highest
power. It masters all, and all minds suffer great pain at the caprice of this thing. And if I were to have
all these powers, yet have nothing at the same time no purpose, no love, what good would these
powers do me?
So with these powers I would enjoy life s little gifts. Enjoy the humour presented to me by the

confused, then return to their usual routine of stupefaction. I could do harm to mankind, yet I would

How does Porters Five Forces Model assist an organisation in their strategic planning? Before

Company strive to secure a competitive advantage over their rivals, I mean who doesn t want to be the

important in the development of strategy, but rather the five forces (Porter, 2008) being a strategy of

So when barriers for entry and exits are high, it means that companies have a higher potential to make
more profit and the opposite occurs when barriers are low. The threat of substitutes: where it refers to
substitute product as those that are available in other industry which can also fulfil the need and want
of the consumers. It can affect competition in an industry by placing an invisible ceiling on prices
which companies within the industry can charge, due to the fact that if the cost of substitute is low
then the consumers will tend to purchase substitutes, therefore limiting the prices that a company can
place on certain items to gain maximum profit. For example, lemonade can be substituted for a soft
drink. Generally, competitive pressures arising from substitute products increase as the relative price
of substitute products declines and as consumer s switching costs decrease. The bargaining power of
buyers is affected by the concentration and number of consumers, when buyer power is strong, they
gain the power to choose between producers and ultimately equip themselves with bargaining power
which then the producers will have to conform to in order to produce profit, under these conditions the
buyer has the most influence in determining the price of products. Also when buyers have strong
bargaining power in the exchange relationship, competition can be affected in several ways. Powerful
buyers can bargain for lower prices, better

Ethics And Shopping In Malcolm Gladwell s The Science Of...
There is science behind everything, including shopping, there are reasons why stores are arranged a
certain way it is not just because it looks pretty , but how do store managers know where to place
certain items in certain places? And does it improve sales? Malcolm Gladwell wrote The Science of
Shopping in which he reveals that the reason why stores are organized a specific way is because they
hire people such as Paco Underhill. According to Gladwell he is a retail anthropologist and an urban
geographer which means he studies the shopping behavior. When Underhill is hired he sets up
cameras all around the store and after a few days of filming people as they shop and studying their
every move. He then sells this information to the stores so they can use it to improve their business.
Should it be allowed for people like Underhill to observe customers as they shop? People could debate
on this topic saying that customers need privacy, but what Underhill does is ethical, clients should be
watched in stores even if it is without their knowledge because it would help both consumers and
businesses. Being able to observe people s behavior in stores and seeing what they are attracted to
would help the store increase sales by putting those items at a reachable place for them to grab. It
would also benefit consumers because costumer service would improve. Lastly, being able to study

Essay On Shakespeare s Scribe Of Widge
Shakespeare s Scribe The main protagonist, Widge, was a worrisome scribe for the Lord Chamberlain
s Men. He constantly feared if he would be fired from the acting organization, as many of his actions
made him look bad, especially when he bruised his teacher, Mr. Armin. After his trip to earn money
for the company, he learned to respect people he hated and found a true family to stay with no matter
what. His journey was a wakeup call, changing his arrogant self into a well mannered actor. Ever since
the beginning, Widge had a distrust of Sal Pavy, as Sal had damaged Widge s shoulder by hitting him
with a blunted rapier. Widge never had the guts to face Sal, though; he was too busy fretting that he
would get in trouble if he laid even a finger on Sal, who would obviously have reported him. Sal said
mean things to Widge and tried to steal all of Widge s parts, which Widge had tried hard to earn. His
fake father, Jamie Redshaw, showed no moral support whatsoever, so Widge was alone in his feud
with Sal. His friends did not help either, because they too were afraid of creating conflict with their
mentors. Ironically, though Widge did not fight Sal, he argued over smaller things, like taking a ...

Advantages And Disadvantages Of E4clicks
1.0 History/Origin
Introduction:
In the current manufacturing environment, estimating can affects the economic condition of a
business. It is the basis of your profit or loss. Estimates that are huge, produce no work, because we
are underbid and hence would not gain those potential orders or sales. We may win underbid jobs, but
they do not produce the efficiency profit from which we can successfully involve a business.
Employers and engineers find it easier to justify purchase of equipment and software used on the floor

Candidates And Policy Of The United States Senate Elections
The names of the authors that wrote an article titled Candidates and Policy in the United States Senate
Elections are Gerald C. Wright and Michael B. Berkman. Although the previous literature on the
subject suggests, that policy is not a major factor in the decision making process, the article argued
otherwise.
It is a known fact that a substantial policy difference between the candidates in a particular race exists.
Policymakers write specific policies for the future and an election determines who will write the
policies, which decides the policy. The ideological characteristics of a state and a candidate for a
political office has a positive correlation. Conservative states or districts have conservative candidates
regardless of party affiliation. Meanwhile, liberal states or districts have liberal candidates regardless
of party affiliation.
Besides, the performance of the economy and of the president, assuming that the president and the
candidate share the same party, affects the chances of the candidates. This is evident in almost all
midterm elections in the modern era. If a president (Democratic President Obama) has perceived as
not doing a good job and has a low approval rating (the mid 40s throughout much of his presidency),
then congressional candidates in the midterm elections are not in their best position. Accordingly,
Democrats lost the House of Representatives and some seats in the United States Senate in the 2010
midterm election. The Democratic Party lost the

Verbal Short-Term Memory
General Topic and Hypothesis Verbal short term memory (STM) is better maintained when a person
has knowledge of the sounds and meanings of words presented. This semantic knowledge is
demonstrated by the impact of semantic manipulations (e.g. word perceptibility) and by
neuropsychological studies of word recall deficits. This can be explained either by redintegration or
language based accounts. Redintegration is the long term knowledge of lexical forms of words that
facilitate item reconstruction. Language based accounts suggest that STM is supported by temporary
activation of long term linguistic representations prior to recall. The present study examines phoneme
level errors to assess the predictions of the semantic binding hypothesis, which ... Show more content

The first experiment included participants categorizing spoken words based on either semantic or
phonological property, and the third experiment added the condition of categorization based on
perceptual property. Word properties combined with immediate serial recall (ISR) task were matched
with the type of categorization so that differences in ISR can be attributed to the encoding condition.
Experiment 3 was designed to retest whether semantic encoding resulted in better recall than
phonological encoding as in Experiment 1 and to test whether the semantic advantage remained with
the addition of a perceptual property, a high or low pitch, condition at encoding. The same words used
in Experiments 1 and 2 were used, but they were recombined to create a third set of thirty words to
test for the conditions of semantic categorization, phonological categorization, or non linguistic pitch
categorization. A total of 90 test lists in blocks of six words each were presented to participants.
Participants responded to questions that related to the nature of categorization condition. Following

Julius Caesar Rhetorical Analysis Essay
Murder can be defined as the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another. In
Shakespeare s Julius Caesar, Brutus and his conspirators murder Caesar and convince the people of
Rome that it was a justified act. Mark Antony, a friend of Caesar, seeks justice for his dear friend. In
his funeral speech Antony uses rhetorical strategies to persuade the Romans that Caesar s death was
unjustified. Through persuasion, Antony uses the strategies: rhetorical questions, verbal irony and the
appeal of pathos to sway the Romans to believe that Caesar s murder was unjust. Furthermore, Antony
s use of rhetorical questions has an effect on the opinions of the citizens of Rome. Antony effectively
uses rhetorical questions to get the Romans to agree that Caesar s murder was unjustified. He asks
rhetorical questions in order to get the people to consider what he is saying and possibly change their
minds. After telling the citizens of Rome about how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

scholar who studied mythology for many year and eventually came up with a concept for a hero and

stage benefiting towards a reward. Although many of my moments have not been a heroic act or

journey and I have had many big and small rewards that I have had from small moments in my

associated with the disorder are confused thinking, delusions, language, and hallucinations. These
main symptoms branch off into other areas. For example, hallucinations can branch off into, smells,

However, the critical mind can be overloaded, where the mind cannot analysis the information being

Social Media A Blessing or a Curse Good [time] everybody. Today, I am going to discuss the benefits

Facebook friend. The idea of social media is a new one; The first recognisable one was created in
1997 but it was 2 years later that the first blogging sites became truly popular. From here, the social
media tree has branched out, allowing us to develop new meanings for words such as follow or tweet

to connect easily. Sounds rather great, doesn t it? Connecting with friends and family or blogging

Breaking the Chain
Breaking the chain
Breaking the chain (or novus actus interveniens, literally new act intervening ) refers in English law to
the idea that causal connections are deemed to finish. Even if the defendant can be shown to have
acted negligently, there will be no liability if some new intervening act breaks the chain of causation
between that negligence and the loss or damage sustained by the claimant. Discussion
Where there is only a single operative cause for the loss and damage suffered by the claimant, it is a
relatively simple matter to determine whether that cause was a breach of the duty of care owed to the
claimant by the defendant. But where the sequence of events leading to the loss and damage comprises

[edit] Sequential causes
Decisions are not always clear cut where the loss or damage flowing from an initial tort is
overwhelmed by a more serious injury caused by:
(a) a second tort, or
(b) a supervening illness or natural event.
In Baker v. Willoughby [1970] AC 467 the defendant negligently injured the claimant s leg in a car
accident. The claimant was later an innocent victim when shot in the same leg by some robbers and
the leg was amputated. The House of Lords held that the defendant was liable to pay full
compensation for the injury he had caused, based on the claimant s losses beyond the time when his
leg was amputated. Since the claimant s disability would have been permanent, damages were
assessed as if the second event had not occurred. If the chain had been treated as broken and the
defendant had had no liability in respect of the period after the claimant s leg had been amputated, the
claimant would have fallen between two sets of defendants (the robbers were not available as
defendants to pay their share of full compensation). This decision was criticised in Jobling v.

How Did The Polynesians Develop Their Culture
Polynesian societies and cultures have developed by living in a place hard to survive for centuries.
Throughout these years the Polynesians have developed into a group of people with a strong sense of
community. Many things have shaped the way the Polynesians developed. The country of origin for
the Polynesians heavily influenced their own traditions and culture. When the Polynesians first settled
in Polynesia their traditions most likely would have been the same as those of their country of origin.
Eventually these customs evolved into different rituals, unique to the Polynesians. Some traditions in
Polynesia include the art of tattooing and tracking their genealogies. When the Europeans first came to
Polynesia, they too influenced the way Polynesia developed. The Polynesians culture and traditions
were discouraged and it was many years before the Polynesians could safely go back to their old way
of living. Due to these influences, Polynesia became the tribal community that it is today.

Human susceptibility to snake venom is generally estimated from the LD50 for rodents. The next
factor in assessing the danger of a partiticular species of snake is the dose of venom that is actually
introduced into the tissues. Some types of snakes have an extremely efficient mechanism of injection
venom with a sing strike; others have poor success in doing so. The amount of venom produced by
snakes that is available for secretion with a bite also varies between kinds of snakes, and between
individuals (usually by size) of any one species (reptipage 1). Symptoms of venomous snakebites. The
symptoms vary not only with the type of venom injected, but also with the amount. A snake may
release no venom at all, or it may release as much as 75% of the total amount stored in its venom
glands. Often when a snake bites in self defense, it injects less venom than when it attacks its prey.
The physical condition of the victim and the location of the bite also affect the severity of the
symptoms. A bite into a muscle is less dangerous than a bite into a blood vessel, for example, because
toxins in the blood are quickly circulated through the body. General symptoms of snakebite include
localized pain and swelling soon after the bite occurs, followed by nausea, tingling or numbness,
weakness, and shortness of breath. If victims do not receive treatment within a few hours, they may
suffer convulsions, fall into a coma,

Logan International Airport Case Study Essay
Logan International Airport Case Study
MGCR 472: Operation Management
Executive Summary
This report provides an analysis and evaluation of the current and prospective delay problems of
Logan International Airport at Boston, Massachusetts. Method of analysis includes waiting line
simulation and historical data tracking as well as response from both local community and Massport.
Results of the data show that the major causes to delay are broken down in the following:
1. Increasing demand for annual operations
2. Adverse weather conditions, especially the northwest wind which Logan airport is not designed to
accommodate at normal capacity.
3. Continuous heavy air traffic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If Turboprops and regional airplanes were to be diverted then their delay time would only be 10
minutes in adverse weather conditions. As the delay time would be significantly reduced for regional
and turboprops in this scenario, we believe that the small planes would be willing to make the switch.
This would also free up capacity by 56% at Logan airport so that the conventional planes would also
have a decreased delay time of 22 minutes as compared to an infinite wait time (Figure 2).
However, while this alternative might be favorable in the short term, it is rather unfeasible over the
long term as there would be a significant passenger cost in terms of loss of goodwill. We assume that
the loss of goodwill would be similar to the passenger cost of $30.9/passenger/hour and we include a
car rental cost of $9/passenger/hour for a total passenger switching cost of $40/passenger/hour.
Passengers would likely be upset at arriving at a different location resulting in many inconveniences
and additional costs incurred. If this happens on a regular basis, Logan airport s reputation will be hurt
and this may adversely affect its revenue as well.

Building a new runway 14/32 (one end at 320 degrees facing the NW and the other at 140 degree

The eruption of the Korean War brought the abrupt requirement for the expansion of aviation.
Helicopters and the Army were very limited in their capabilities, acquisitions of aircraft, laws in place,

the need was required during the war. Army Aviation saw expansions of their force structure and how
operations were conducted on the battlefield. The Aviation Center at Fort Rucker, Alabama was

With the acquisition of new aircraft, the training requirements increase as well. The Aviation Center at
Fort Rucker, Alabama was created to train Army aviators in flight training as well as develop a
standard for Aviation a cross the force. Through all of these challenges, the foundation was set for
Army Aviation to grow into the fighting force we know now.
Helicopter Advancement
The Korean War forced many changes on the way helicopters were used. Most importantly, the
medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) function was a pivotal function Army Aviation could provide to the
ground commanders. The potential of helicopters on the battle field were huge, but there were some
hurdles that needed to be overcome. The Army largely depended on the Marine Corps experiences in
Korea to develop programs of their own (Kreisher, 2011). This inspired the Army to field the Bell YH
13 as a replacement for the light, fixed wing, observation aircraft. In 1950, less than two months
before the Korean War, the Army approved five transportation rotary wing companies to begin
producing aircraft.
Limitations of Army Helicopters In September, 1950, General J. Lawton Collins asked the Air Force
to remove weight restrictions of 3,500 pounds, limiting what the Army could do with their helicopters.
After a year of debates and meetings, a formal agreement between the Air Force and the Army
removed the weight limitations. The United

Natural History Of Zebra Mussels
Natural History of Zebra Mussels
Invasive species aren t anything new in Minnesota; however, over the past 500 years, more than 4,500
species have established populations in the United States (Benson, 2015). Zebra mussels (Dreissena
polymorpha) are one of those invasive species. Named because of their zebra like stripes, these bi
valve mussels live between 4 5 years and grow to about 50 millimeters. Zebra mussels are native to
western Russia near the Black and Caspian Seas. Construction of canals aided their spread throughout
Europe between the 1700s and the 1800s (Jensen, 2009). By the 1830s, zebra mussels had spread

If there is some water supplies, closed zebra mussels can survive for longer. Veligers cannot survive
drying; however, if there is a small water amount (like a puddle or pond), they can survive making
some treatment methods like lowering the reservoir levels ineffective. Zebra mussels can survive as
boats are transferred from lake to lake and even in bait buckets that fishermen and fisherwomen use.
Researchers indicate that overland dispersal could have spread zebra mussels from one small inland
lake to another which would explain why so many inner lakes are contaminated with zebra mussels.
Ballast water from a Russian commercial cargo vessel was the main vector for spreading the zebra
mussels into U.S. waterways and regulations have been put into place regarding discharging ballast in
waterways. Education has spread the preventative methods for stopping the spread of zebra mussels
and the legal implications of not following rules are steep.
Minnesota SeaGrant (2009) offers these recommendations about protecting local waters from
spreading zebra mussels:
Aquatic plants and animals should be removed from boats, trailers and other equipment. Spray down
boats and boat trailers before leaving the water access point.
Livewells and bilge water should be emptied
Bait buckets should be dumped onto land (not into the water) and shouldn t be cross contaminated

  • 2. Social Inequality In Ralph Ellison s Battle Royal In Battle Royal before the large fight, the party is delighted with a stark nude dancer. Ellison presents the woman in such a way that the reader feels sorry for her just as they do with the narrator. She along with the narrator are both symbols of social inequality experienced before the civil rights movement, where both are abused due to their social niche (the dancer as a woman, and the narrator as an African American). This social inequality is brought forth in an exaggerative way to show that both these things likely occurred in the period, and that they suffer through many other such injustices throughout their normal lives. One of Battle Royal s main purposes was to provide an insight into the pre Civil Rights era (which was the current time for Ellison) and exemplify the human atrocities that occurred. The short story shows the ways in which the white ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After all the men had made it into the room she began to dance, a slow sensuous movement; the smoke of a hundred cigars clinging to her like the thinnest of veils (522). Her overt sexualization at the hands of the men in the room is easily comparable with the racism directed toward the narrator in the story. Following her dancing she is quickly rushed upon and tossed her as college boys are tossed at a hazing, causing terror and disgust in her eyes as her soft breasts seemed to flatten against the air and her legs flung wildly as she spun (522). The narrator directly compares this terror felt by the woman being manhandled with the terror he is experiencing in leu of the fight and speech. These two extreme examples show how unfairly and disgracefully both woman and African Americans were seen at the time. Only a few generations from the abolishment of slavery, popular culture, especially in the south continued to look down upon these two groups as objects, in a sexual and racial ... • 4. The Current Rate Of Adoption CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY An oft heard phrase in education has become both a directive and a duty for educators: We must meet students where they are. This phrase refers to an obligation to meet students needs by matching instructional methods to their levels and preferences. In this era of rapid technological innovation and change, many students have embraced the use of Social Networking Sites (SNS) such as Facebook and spend much of their time in its virtual spaces. Despite its popularity with college students, it is unclear if university faculty educators feel that SNSs are appropriate places to go to meet their students needs. This study seeks to explore this question by comparing faculty and students as to their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 211). While many SNSs are in the early stages of development, the adoption of the concept has been rapid. The study proposed here focuses specifically on the adoption of SNSs by students and faculty in higher education. Though SNSs have attained remarkable popularity, Facebook has become the most popular, particularly among people of ages 17 to 25 (Melber, 2008). Recent studies indicate that the number of older users is increasing rapidly (Kirkpatrick, 2009), but currently more than 90% of college students have a Facebook account (Haywoode, 2010; Loveland, 2011). Thus, the substantial number of college students using this technology has compelled many educators to wonder if there are potential benefits for the use of Facebook to support education. According to Santovex (2006), colleges and universities can use Facebook to engage students academically and build relationships with faculty (p. 5). As retention has become a focal point for many universities, several studies have suggested methods for universities to manage retention more effectively. John N. Gardner, founder and senior fellow of the National Resource Center for The First Year Experience and Students in Transitions, has visited many campuses, proposing to student affairs professionals that involvement and sense of connectedness ... • 5. Strategic Game Glo-Bus Financial Ratios Used In GLO BUS Profitability Ratios (as reported on pages 2 and 6 of the GLO BUS Statistical Review) Earnings per share (EPS) is defined as net income divided by the number of shares of stock issued to stockholders. Higher EPS values indicate the company is earning more net income per share of stock outstanding. Because EPS is one of the five performance measures on which your company is graded (see p. 2 of the GSR) and because your company has a higher EPS target each year, you should monitor EPS regularly and take actions to boost EPS. One way to boost EPS is to pursue actions that will raise net income (the numerator in the formula for calculating EPS). A second means of boosting EPS is to repurchase shares of ... Companies having the highest ratios of production costs to net revenues are likely to be caught in a profit squeeze, with margins too small to cover delivery, marketing, and administrative costs and interest costs and still have a comfortable margin for profit. Production costs at such companies are usually too high relative to the price they are charging (their strategic options for boosting profitability are to cut costs, raise prices, or try to make up for thin margins by somehow selling additional units). The percentage of delivery costs for cameras to net sales revenues. This ratio is calculated by dividing total delivery costs by net revenues (where net revenues represent the dollars received from camera sales, after exchange rate adjustments and any promotional discounts). A low percentage of delivery costs to net revenues is preferable to a higher percentage, indicating that a smaller proportion of revenues is required to cover delivery costs (which leaves more room for covering other costs and earning a bigger profit on each unit sold). • 6. Male Gaze A challenge that faces both Canadian cinema and women s cinema is the idea of the male gaze. The film industry is a phallocentric institution that since its inception has always faced the problem of objectifying women. • 8. Persuasive Essay On Gun Shootings n July 18, 1984, eight month Carlos Reyes and his mother, Jackie, was killed by an unemployed father. Along with Carlos, 21 innocent people were killed at the McDonald s located in San Ysidro, California. Carlos is the youngest victim to gun violence till this date. His death is the result of the killer having easy access to a semiautomatic pistol and a shotgun (Berkowitz et al, 2017). Ryan Frazier, the 21 year old husband of Emily Frazier, shot himself with a semiautomatic gun he bought from a gas station in November 2008 after confronting his teenage nightmare for a lawsuit. He was molested by a priest and his first time using a gun was to end his own life, despite having a whole future ahead of him (Drexle, 2016). Carlos and Ryan are one of the many few that lose their lives from guns. They represent the stories of victims who have died after the trigger was pulled. With guns being readily available, everyone has the licenses to kill at any point in time, whether the pain is inflicted on others or themselves. Imagine if these were stories of your own family members or friends. According to our Founding Fathers, our second amendment should not be infringed and that people have the rights to keep and bear arms. While reading I was very intrigued by two poems that I feel was wrote more so on the love side and trying to show or I would say express themselves through the poem. The poems Shall I compare thee to a summer s day? by William Shakespeare and To My Dear and Loving Husband by Anne Bradstreet are two poems I feel is trying to express love, but in two totally different ways. The poems are bringing meaning to the word love and showing that it doesn t have to be used only to show a connection between two different people, but it can be used in other ways as well. In the poem Shall I compare thee to a summer s day? By William Shakespeare, the author is showing his love through nature. He is actually comparing every little thing he feels is right about his companion to something in nature. He says, Thou art more lovely and more temperate. From this the author is saying one s love is more lovable and is hotter than summer. He then goes on to say, Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May. He is saying that before summer comes its spring time and the windy weather is knocking all of the buds off the flowers and making them new, so he is she is more better now that they have gone through a rough time before. After that he says, And summer s lease hath all too short a date. He means by this that the summer time goes by very fast, so they have to savor every moment together during this time while ... • 10. The Importance Of Sea Temperature Anomalies The oceans play an important role in the climate system owing to the interannual and longer timescale variability in sea surface temperature (SST). Hasselmann (1976) proposed that this climate variability could be represented by a stochastic first order auto regressive process (AR1 process) and should be considered as the null hypothesis for extra tropical sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA). According to this concept, SSTAs quickly responds to the atmospheric heat fluxes at short time period and the heat capacity of the ocean integrates the SSTA variability on a longer time period. Frankignoul and Hasselmann (1977) have further suggested that the atmospheric forcing for SST anomalies follows a spectrum of white noise with constant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus the broad structure of the SSTA spectrum is determined by the depth of the ocean ML and atmospheric process. Attempts to include additional processes, such as Ekman transport, entrainment of sub mixed layer thermal anomalies (Dommenget and Latif 2002; Deser et al. 2003; Lee et al. 2008), state dependent noise (Sura et al. 2005) and the re emergence associated with seasonal change in MLD (Schneider and Cornuelle 2005) has shown to increase the SSTA variance at annual and longer timescales. However, studies have demonstrated that the SST variability at some part of the oceans cannot be represented by a simple AR1 process (Hall and Manabe 1997; Dommenget and Latif 2002, 2008). The inconsistency arises from the exchange of heat energy in the mixed layer and sub mixed layer in the ocean. The strong seasonal cycle of the MLD can strengthen the persistence of SSTA from one winter to the following. The timescale in which the subsurface temperature anomalies entrain to the surface (nearly 1 year) is expected to influence the spectral variance of SSTA. Möller et al. (2008) have shown a peak in the annual time period in the power spectrum of midlatitude SSTA that is associated with the re emergence. If humanity takes the time to sit down and internalize, one of the questions coming to mind has to do with why is it often afraid of change? Change is in fact a big theme in the 1987 hit song The Man in the Mirror (Appendix E), where the late artist Michael Jackson sang the famous line, If you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make a change. Fast forward to a modern day 2016 filled with political unrest, poverty, and waning human rights, Michael Jackson s message of self reflection eventually translating into social change finds its relevancy today, despite the song s thirty years old tenure. It introduces the notion that all individuals in society are essentially human, even in spite of humanity s tendency to demonize other belief systems. Even Saint Mother Theresa agreed with this point, once saying that if we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other. The only way to reconcile the fact that differences don t corrupt our humanity is in society s willingness to be flexible to different points of view and recognize the structures of prejudice in a modern context. What then is the harm in paring away our egos to realize that we all have something to bring to the table? Forms of art that even attempt to evoke this message of solidarity include poetry, which in itself is a free medium that poets utilize to express their thoughts and emotions. Many different debates have left people baffled when it comes to defining one s identity or self. Descartes and Ghost in the shell explore in depth the means of their self. Descartes often speaks about mind and body dualism in his meditations and that the mind is separate. However when you look at the mind and body separately, you are left with a dilemma; Observing one or the other by itself doesn t really get you anywhere. All of the knowledge we acquire throughout our lives are connected to some other known idea or concept. During one of his meditations, Descartes mentions, Nor should I think that I do not perceive the infinite by means of a true idea, but only through a negation of the finite. Just as I perceive rest and darkness by means of a negation through motion and light (Descartes 6.46). It is impossible to comprehend what the mind is by looking at it solely; you have to put it in comparison with what a body means. You cannot comprehend what a mind is just like how you cannot comprehend what a body is until you put them in contrast or comparison with each other. It is also necessary to take into account the communicative skill gaps that exist and what type of interpersonal skills are needed, and this is especially true in the ` context of decision making vis a vis strategic alliances, for example (Trim and Lee, 2003). What needs to be understood, however, is how individuals from different cultures relate to people from outside their cultural value system. It can affect competition in an industry by placing an invisible ceiling on prices which companies within the industry can charge, due to the fact that if the cost of substitute is low then the consumers will tend to purchase substitutes, therefore limiting the prices that a company can place on certain items to gain maximum profit. There is science behind everything, including shopping, there are reasons why stores are arranged a certain way it is not just because it looks pretty , but how do store managers know where to place certain items in certain places? And does it improve sales? Malcolm Gladwell wrote The Science of Shopping in which he reveals that the reason why stores are organized a specific way is because they hire people such as Paco Underhill. According to Gladwell he is a retail anthropologist and an urban geographer which means he studies the shopping behavior. When Underhill is hired he sets up cameras all around the store and after a few days of filming people as they shop and studying their every move. He then sells this information to the stores so they can use it to improve their business. Should it be allowed for people like Underhill to observe customers as they shop? People could debate on this topic saying that customers need privacy, but what Underhill does is ethical, clients should be watched in stores even if it is without their knowledge because it would help both consumers and businesses. Being able to observe people s behavior in stores and seeing what they are attracted to would help the store increase sales by putting those items at a reachable place for them to grab. It is a known fact that a substantial policy difference between the candidates in a particular race exists. This can be explained either by redintegration or language based accounts. Redintegration is the long term knowledge of lexical forms of words that facilitate item reconstruction. • 28. Inhibitory Hallucinations Introduction Schizophrenia is a debilitating disorder, which can affect a person s life on a daily basis because it impairs their cognitive functions. The onset of schizophrenia starts between the ages of 10 and 25 years for men and between 25 and 35 for women (Rajji et al, 2009, p.286). The symptoms associated with the disorder are confused thinking, delusions, language, and hallucinations. These main symptoms branch off into other areas. For example, hallucinations can branch off into, smells, tastes, what they see, how they feel and auditory. Melton (2012) further explains that our mind has a filter/safe guard called the critical mind that analysis information and decisions basic on our beliefs. Following this, Melton (2011) states we have our conscious mind where variables like logic, reasoning, decisions and will, is involved in our processing of information. Melton (2012) goes on to say, the conscious mind, there are the message units that help us guide our decision making these are our body, the environment, the conscious, and the sub conscious. All the factors are then processed through our critical mind and anything we do not like is filtered out thous allowing us to make an informed choice. However, the critical mind can be overloaded, where the mind cannot analysis the information being sent to it, and so it passes freely with no safe guards in place. Today, I am going to discuss the benefits of social media but I shall also address the issues, as you would ve seen if you have added me as a Facebook friend. The idea of social media is a new one; The first recognisable one was created in 1997 but it was 2 years later that the first blogging sites became truly popular. From here, the social media tree has branched out, allowing us to develop new meanings for words such as follow or tweet and to gather newer terms like reblog and has given us access to instant messaging, allowing all users to connect easily. Sounds rather great, doesn t it? Connecting with friends and family or blogging about your fancy dinner that your partner took you out to is not the only thing that happens on these websites. Cyberbullying is an issue that plagues our world, and it is estimated that 22 million students experienced it in 2011. 3.9% of these people reported being cyberbullied every single day. 1 in 6 teens say they have been contacted online by someone they did not know in a way that made them scared or uncomfortable. Breaking the Chain Breaking the chain Breaking the chain (or novus actus interveniens, literally new act intervening ) refers in English law to the idea that causal connections are deemed to finish. Even if the defendant can be shown to have acted negligently, there will be no liability if some new intervening act breaks the chain of causation between that negligence and the loss or damage sustained by the claimant. Discussion Where there is only a single operative cause for the loss and damage suffered by the claimant, it is a relatively simple matter to determine whether that cause was a breach of the duty of care owed to the claimant by the defendant. [edit] Sequential causes Decisions are not always clear cut where the loss or damage flowing from an initial tort is overwhelmed by a more serious injury caused by: (a) a second tort, or (b) a supervening illness or natural event. In Baker v. Willoughby [1970] AC 467 the defendant negligently injured the claimant s leg in a car accident. The claimant was later an innocent victim when shot in the same leg by some robbers and the leg was amputated. The House of Lords held that the defendant was liable to pay full compensation for the injury he had caused, based on the claimant s losses beyond the time when his leg was amputated. Since the claimant s disability would have been permanent, damages were assessed as if the second event had not occurred. If the chain had been treated as broken and the defendant had had no liability in respect of the period after the claimant s leg had been amputated, the claimant would have fallen between two sets of defendants (the robbers were not available as defendants to pay their share of full compensation). This decision was criticised in Jobling v. Associated Dairies [1982] AC 794 where the claimant s employer negligently caused a slipped disk ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Throughout these years the Polynesians have developed into a group of people with a strong sense of community. Many things have shaped the way the Polynesians developed. The country of origin for the Polynesians heavily influenced their own traditions and culture. When the Polynesians first settled in Polynesia their traditions most likely would have been the same as those of their country of origin. Eventually these customs evolved into different rituals, unique to the Polynesians. Some traditions in Polynesia include the art of tattooing and tracking their genealogies. When the Europeans first came to Polynesia, they too influenced the way Polynesia developed. Human susceptibility to snake venom is generally estimated from the LD50 for rodents. The next factor in assessing the danger of a partiticular species of snake is the dose of venom that is actually introduced into the tissues. Some types of snakes have an extremely efficient mechanism of injection venom with a sing strike; others have poor success in doing so. The amount of venom produced by snakes that is available for secretion with a bite also varies between kinds of snakes, and between individuals (usually by size) of any one species (reptipage 1). Symptoms of venomous snakebites. The symptoms vary not only with the type of venom injected, but also with the amount. A snake may release no venom at all, or it may release as much as 75% of the total amount stored in its venom glands. Often when a snake bites in self defense, it injects less venom than when it attacks its prey. The physical condition of the victim and the location of the bite also affect the severity of the symptoms. A bite into a muscle is less dangerous than a bite into a blood vessel, for example, because toxins in the blood are quickly circulated through the body. General symptoms of snakebite include localized pain and swelling soon after the bite occurs, followed by nausea, tingling or numbness, weakness, and shortness of breath. Logan International Airport Case Study Essay Logan International Airport Case Study MGCR 472: Operation Management Executive Summary This report provides an analysis and evaluation of the current and prospective delay problems of Logan International Airport at Boston, Massachusetts. Method of analysis includes waiting line simulation and historical data tracking as well as response from both local community and Massport. Results of the data show that the major causes to delay are broken down in the following: 1. Increasing demand for annual operations 2. Adverse weather conditions, especially the northwest wind which Logan airport is not designed to accommodate at normal capacity. 3. Continuous heavy air traffic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If Turboprops and regional airplanes were to be diverted then their delay time would only be 10 minutes in adverse weather conditions. As the delay time would be significantly reduced for regional and turboprops in this scenario, we believe that the small planes would be willing to make the switch. This would also free up capacity by 56% at Logan airport so that the conventional planes would also have a decreased delay time of 22 minutes as compared to an infinite wait time (Figure 2). However, while this alternative might be favorable in the short term, it is rather unfeasible over the long term as there would be a significant passenger cost in terms of loss of goodwill. We assume that the loss of goodwill would be similar to the passenger cost of $30.9/passenger/hour and we include a car rental cost of $9/passenger/hour for a total passenger switching cost of $40/passenger/hour. Passengers would likely be upset at arriving at a different location resulting in many inconveniences and additional costs incurred. If this happens on a regular basis, Logan airport s reputation will be hurt and this may adversely affect its revenue as well. The Aviation Center at Fort Rucker, Alabama was created to train Army aviators in flight training as well as develop a standard for Aviation a cross the force. Through all of these challenges, the foundation was set for Army Aviation to grow into the fighting force we know now. Helicopter Advancement The Korean War forced many changes on the way helicopters were used. Most importantly, the medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) function was a pivotal function Army Aviation could provide to the ground commanders. The potential of helicopters on the battle field were huge, but there were some hurdles that needed to be overcome. The Army largely depended on the Marine Corps experiences in Korea to develop programs of their own (Kreisher, 2011). This inspired the Army to field the Bell YH 13 as a replacement for the light, fixed wing, observation aircraft. In 1950, less than two months before the Korean War, the Army approved five transportation rotary wing companies to begin producing aircraft. Limitations of Army Helicopters In September, 1950, General J. Lawton Collins asked the Air Force to remove weight restrictions of 3,500 pounds, limiting what the Army could do with their helicopters. Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) are one of those invasive species. Named because of their zebra like stripes, these bi valve mussels live between 4 5 years and grow to about 50 millimeters. Zebra mussels are native to western Russia near the Black and Caspian Seas. Construction of canals aided their spread throughout Europe between the 1700s and the 1800s (Jensen, 2009). Veligers cannot survive drying; however, if there is a small water amount (like a puddle or pond), they can survive making some treatment methods like lowering the reservoir levels ineffective. Zebra mussels can survive as boats are transferred from lake to lake and even in bait buckets that fishermen and fisherwomen use. Researchers indicate that overland dispersal could have spread zebra mussels from one small inland lake to another which would explain why so many inner lakes are contaminated with zebra mussels. Ballast water from a Russian commercial cargo vessel was the main vector for spreading the zebra mussels into U.S. waterways and regulations have been put into place regarding discharging ballast in waterways. Education has spread the preventative methods for stopping the spread of zebra mussels and the legal implications of not following rules are steep. Minnesota SeaGrant (2009) offers these recommendations about protecting local waters from spreading zebra mussels: Aquatic plants and animals should be removed from boats, trailers and other equipment.
