Rice and cassava are the main staple food crops in Liberia, and more than 60 percent of the rice
consumed in Liberia is imported (WFP, 2008). But in and around Monrovia families are increasing

minority sells their produce on the market.

In backyards and small plots on open spaces, families grow vegetables (sweet potato, cabbage,
amaranth, okra, pepper, eggplant, cassava, or corn), and some fruit (mango, papaya) or medicinal
plants. Some households have access to two plots: one near the house for the rainy season and one on
the edge of nearby swamps for the dry season. These home gardens and small plots are mostly
cultivated by women. Urban agriculture is not new in Liberia. It was practiced for decades in
Monrovia and other Liberian cities before the civil war broke out in 1989, but grew in importance

Jem Bravery In Lord Of The Flies
Throughout the novel, Jem s definition of courage shifts over time, indicative of his maturing
personality. As the story begins, Jem s superficial idea of courage reveals his immature nature, as his
ignorance defines his judgement. At the start of the novel, Jem s idea of bravery is simply touching the
side of the Radley house, and then only because In all his life, Jem had never declined a dare. In this
instance Jem has an urge to boast about his masculinity, in the form of a perceived bravery. However,
contrary to what Jem thinks, this act of courage merely supports his innocence as he is yet to
experience the real plight of society and the true courage which comes with that. With Jem s lack of
understanding, Harper Lee criticises the traditional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While facing a long lasting fight with her addiction to morphine, Ms Dubose s effort to kick this habit

acknowledges this bravery as he tries to show Jem what real courage is. Once again Atticus attempts
to teach the Children the importance of perseverance, not the traditional, masculine and southern idea
of bravery. Lee s inclusion of Ms Dubose s courage is also critical of the stereotypes during the civil
rights movement. After being introduced as a horrible witch like figure, Ms Dubose is eventually seen
as the bravest person [Atticus] ever knew. Through her tremendous courage, Ms Dubose defies her
original stereotype as Lee attempts to picture her dying in goodness. In doing this, Lee criticises the
stereotypes of the 1950 s. Despite not directly linking to the situation of Ms Dubose, the prejudice
toward the African American society, merely based on an uneducated, common belief, is denounced as
Lee introduces her society to a women who defies her preconceived image through a tremendous

Predestination In Martin Luther s Institutes Of The...
The Protestant Reformation was a movement in 16th century Europe that developed many new beliefs
about Christianity. Along with the man who started the Reformation, Martin Luther, John Calvin is
one of the most well known and influential theologians of this time. In his highly influential book,
Institutes of the Christian Religion, Calvin lays out his main beliefs about many of the major doctrines
of the Christian church. One of the biggest ideas Calvin explores in this book is the relationship
between humans and God in terms of predestination. Ultimately, Calvin argues that God, as the creator
of the world and an inherently righteous being, holds the power of salvation and damnation as humans
act in accordance with God s will. Before ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Calvin gives an example of one of these potential arguments in Institutions: [God] adopts as sons
those whom he foreknows will not be unworthy of his grace; he appoints to the damnation of death
those whose dispositions he discerns will be inclined to evil intention and ungodliness (Institutes 932).
This reasoning seems consistent with what Calvin says about predestination, and would show that as
humans, our works merit our salvation. This argument aligns with what a merit theologian such as
Erasmus would argue. Erasmus holds that God respects the free will of humans, and will send them to
heaven or hell based on their free actions. For if God elects those who are worthy of election and
damns those unworthy, it seems that we should be able to merit salvation through our actions, as
theologians such as Erasmus would argue. According to Calvin, however, these critics misinterpret his
teaching. The easiest argument to make, from Calvin s perspective, is that God has given to humans
everything they have without them meriting any of it. The most basic example of this is that he created
each man as a human in his own image rather than as an animal. This is an example that shows how
God gives benefits to humans without them meriting them, and this idea can be extended to the benefit
God gives the elect after they pass. According to Calvin, such benefits were given to us before the
creation of the world,

Essay On Vitiligo
The term vitiligo is derived from the latin word vitelius meaning calf . The white patches of the
disease resembles the white patches of a spotted calf resulting in the disease being called Vitiligo. This
is a disorder of the skin in which white patches will appear on the skin on different spots of the body.
The disease will happen to people because the melanocytes that make pigment in the skin are
destroyed. The history of Vitiligo dates way back and has many characteristics of the victim, signs,
and symptoms along with methods of diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Many scientist believe that
Vitiligo was first discovered in 1500 B.C in Egypt. In The Ebers Papyrus, which is an Egyptian
medical papyrus dating to 1500 B.C, it describes two forms of depigmentation one being
depigmentation that resembled Vitiligo. Many centuries went by and vitiligo continued to be one of
the most important depigmentation ailments worldwide. It would provoke discrimination or
segregation in certain cultures where affected individuals were unable to get jobs or even become
married most probably based upon ancient religious beliefs. Around 1533 Andreas Vesalius called the

Collectivism In Anthem To The Fountainhead, By Ayn Rand
Collectivism is a very common theme in Ayn Rand s writing. From Anthem to The Fountainhead, her
opinion is very clear: individualism is the source of freedom and joy, while collectivism is the root of
sorrow and slavery. In Anthem, the main character, Equality 7 252, has grown up in a collectivist
society that has remained strong for centuries. In that society, no one has had the choice to do what
they want to do, love what (or who) they love, and simply be who they are. That society praises the
idea that men live only for each other. Living for oneself is evil, a Transgression. The idea of I , Me ,
and Mine has disappeared, dragging the precious words along with it. Throughout the plot, Equality 7
2521 is seen both unintentionally and intentionally defying his society. At first, he condemns himself,
describing his evil acts and mind and labeling his different mindset as a curse. We were born with a
curse. It has always driven us to thoughts which are forbidden. (Rand 18) He is also condemned by
others, for things he cannot control. He is taller than most other people, he has preferences for what he
wishes to become, and he has ideas and opinions. Yet when his life assignment is Street Sweeper, he
rejoices. He sees that as a way to pay penance for his sins. Later on, however, he embraces his
individuality. I am. I think. I will. (Rand 94) He is the first to accept the idea of individuality for
centuries, and helps others accept it, too. A similar struggle is seen in The Fountainhead. The main
character of that novel, . Howard Roark, has to defend himself in court after dynamiting a government
housing project that he designed. An agreement was made that the project would be built exactly as
designed, but it wasn t, so Roark made a protest against collectivism by destroying the project. He
ends up in court. He then delivers a moving speech titled The Soul of an Individualist . In it he
proclaims his individualism, and denounces collectivism as a parasitic system in which no one can
achieve anything or truly live. I came here to say that I do not recognize anyone s right to one minute
of my life. Nor to any part of my energy. Nor to any achievement of mine. No matter who makes the
claim, how large

The Major Contributions Of John Calvin And The Protestant...
John Calvin was born on July 10th, 1509 in Noyon, Picardy, France. He studied at the universities of
Paris, Bourges, and Orleans. He was a key leader of the Protestant Reformation. He wrote many
protestant works like Institutes of the Christian Religion. Calvin was also a revolutionary theologian
and leader, developing the religion of Calvinism and doctrine of predestination. In addition, Calvin
reorganized the city of Geneva, Switzerland and made it into an example theocracy. John Calvin died
on May 27th, 1564 in Geneva, Switzerland, but his ideas and achievements have lived on. In fact, the
average citizen should care about him because of the contributions he has made to the world, however
positive or negative they may be. John Calvin s three main contributions that make him historically
significant are his development of the doctrine of predestination, his revolutionary reform of the
education system, and his emphasis on the protestant work ethic.
John Calvin s doctrine of predestination is arguably one of the most important results of the Protestant
reformation. Predestination is the belief that salvation[entrance into heaven] is given to only those
whom god has chosen . The chosen people were called the elect. John Calvin wrote this important
belief during the era of the Protestant Reformation. People often formed negative opinions on
predestination or let it rule their lives. Some people who did not think like Calvin loathed
predestination because they believed that

The Swot Analysis Of Waitrose
The PESTEL Analysis of Waitrose

Waitrose is a chain of super markets in United Kingdom focused on the grocery business. The
organization as of 2010 had 228 retail branches only in UK making it the 6th largest retailer with a
market share of 4.3% in UK (Corporate Watch, 2012). The grocery business is a major contributor to
the food industry and forms the core of the retailing venture attracting many market players in UK
such as Tesco, Iceland, Somerfield, Sainsbury s, and ASDA. This has led to intense competition
compelling Waitrose to embrace a differentiation strategy of aiming at the so called upper class which

Additionally, the Department of the Environment, Transport, and Regions affirms that the government
firmly remains to be dedicated to the Planning Policy Guidance objective of enhancing and sustaining
viability and vitality of prevailing of local centers, districts, towns, and cities in regard to the retailing
business (Gov UK, 2013). Due to this, Waitrose has been operating in permissible vicinities or
localities by the government. Also the Supply of Groceries from Multiple Stores in the United
Kingdom reports that leading supermarket chains as far as grocery business is concerned should not
form cartels to keep prices high (NY, 2012). Thus, Waitrose has been charging affordable prices for its
quality products in complying with this directive. Also UK has been campaigning for anti Genetically
Modified Foods in retail stores (Keynote, 2011). Moreover, the upper class does not prefer GMO
foods and thus the organization has been their darling. Finally, the organization trades within the
Eurozone where there is political stability and also a strong currency making the business activities of
Waitrose not to be tampered with at all.
Economically, UK has not been that stable as far as economic activity is concerned. The global
economic meltdown and its aftermath are still being felt today. The years following the 2007/2008
were economic roller coaster in UK. By 2009, the economic growth declined by 4 leading to low GDP

Economies Of Scale And Scope
Economies of Scope:
Economies of scale and scope help producers lower their cost by producing the next unit of output at
lower costs this trend continues until production reaches a level of diseconomies of scale where
production is no longer running as efficient as it should. This tends to increase the barriers to entry for
new competitors as when they enter the market they will experience a higher cost of production. Why?
Solely because they have smaller economies of scale and cannot afford to sell the product at the same
price as other much larger firms. Generally, economies of scale and scope positively affect General
Electric. Since General Electric is one of the biggest conglomerates in the world it has the opportunity
to offer products and services through the same organization. These products might be highly unalike
but due to the wide range of businesses covered by GE the prospect is there. For example, GE, in
order to continue a healthy relationship with valued customers, has allowed the multimillion dollar
purchase of its jet engines to be financed over long periods of time. The catch is that these finance
opportunities are usually done via a leasing arrangement from GE Finance. In recent year GE has
pursued a service strategy when it comes to selling aircraft engines. They sell what they call power by
the hour this enables the private firm to indirectly rent the engine turbines, in return the firm would
award GE with maintenance contracts on the engines. This

Summary Of The Argument From Design By William Paley
The Argument from Design In William Paley s Argument from Design he seeks to prove God s
existence by comparing the world and universe we live in to a machine, specifically a watch. The goal
of the design argument is to prove the existence of an omniscient, omnipotent, and wholly good God
through the watch analogy. The analogy tries to say that if we look at the creation of the universe like
that of a watch, we can infer that it has a purpose and a designer. While this seems to be valid, there
are some flaws in Paley s argument that I will point out. Although Paley succeeds in presenting a well
thought out argument that shows order in the world, he ultimately fails to prove the existence of an
omniscient, omnipotent, and wholly good God. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He explicitly states, It is not necessary that a machine be perfect in order to show with what design it
was made; still less necessary, where the only question is whether it was made with any design at all
(Paley 60). What Paley fails to talk about is the presence of natural evil in the world and how a
defective design would to indicate that the designer is neither omnipotent nor all good. This brings up
the problem of evil, which becomes a significant factor while looking at the characteristics of God. If
God is omnipotent and all good then it can be said the world should be free from imperfections, but it
is not, raising the question of whether or not God is in fact all powerful and all good. Additionally, we
cannot compare the world we live in to anything because of its complicated design. Because of this,
when Paley tries to draw comparisons between the design of the watch to that of the stone, he falls
short. In his second attempt to strengthen his argument, Paley again opens up two bigger holes that
demonstrate the weakness in his

Homer composed The Odyssey in a meter known as dactylic hexameter, which gives the epic its

Construction Industry Council ( Cic )
Steel has been one of the key materials for a modern society from the past to these days, while its
manufacture is one of the main contributors of carbon emission in the world. In order to drive the
construction industry to apply more sustainable materials, Construction Industry Council (CIC) has
launched a voluntary and Hong Kong based Carbon Labelling Scheme for Construction Materials
covering Cement, Reinforcing Bar, and Structural Steel. Steel, being a very significant material in
building industry in Hong Kong, has a considerable carbon footprint throughout its life cycle.
There are two different routes of steel making, Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) and Electric Arc
Furnace Steelmaking (EAS).
Basic Oxygen Steelmaking is a primary steelmaking method, in which convert carbon rich molten pig
iron into steel due to oxidizing action. Oxygen was blown into the melt under a basic slag. It is the
most powerful and effective steel making method. The converter used for steel making is called as
Basic Oxygen Furnace. There is about 67% of steel in the world is produced using Basic Oxygen
Steelmaking. The process of Basic Oxygen Steelmaking was developed in 1948 by Robert Durrer and
commercialized in 1952 1953 by Austrian VOEST and ÖAMG. The modern furnace takes a charge of
up to 350 tons iron and converts it into steel within 40 minutes.

Small Hive Beetle
The objective of this research is to gain knowledge and disseminate information in regards to the
cultural practices in honey bee husbandry and the management of small hive beetles. The small hive
beetle is known to be an occasional pest species to African honey bees, but they are more of a threat to
European honey bees. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential effects of commercial pollen
dough substitutes on the survivability and reproductive success of the small hive beetle. This new
information will aid beekeepers through the process of selecting diets that are impactful in stopping
the spread of SHB in honey bee colonies.
The small hive beetles originated from infested colonies, and this experiment requires that they be
maintained. The control variable was unfed adult small hive beetles and beetles that were only fed on
water. The independent variables are Dadant Artificial Pollen 23, Dadant Brood Builder, and Protein
Patties. Measurements of the amount of time that the small hive beetles are able to survive in each
pollen dough substitute, and how successful the beetles are at reproducing (this is done by counting
the amount of larvae present in each container) will be observed.

John Locke And The Declaration Of The Rights Of Man
To enlighten is to give intellectual or spiritual light to someone. The Enlightenment period in Europe
in the 17th and 18th centuries was an intellectual movement that inspired thought, question, and
reason in people across the continent. It was the age of new ideals that forever altered the course of
our world today and will always be a time where tradition was no longer the primary way in which
people led their lives. Several Enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire, Rousseau, and Hobbes have
influenced multiple government systems to reform their ways by inspiring revolution. Natural Rights
creates a democratic republic government where supreme power rests with the people and allows them
to elect representatives to operate their country, therefore upsetting citizens since absolute monarchies
rule. Natural Rights spawns uprisings and revolution in countries because people believe it to be their
right to have shared power which is evident through multiple documents such as The English Bill of
Rights, U.S. Constitution, and The Declaration of the Rights of Man.
John Locke s idea of Natural Rights created a whole new aspect of how the government should be
constructed. Natural Rights is the freedoms people are born with and should be protected by the
government, if not then the citizens have the right to overthrow the government since their rights are
not being preserved. This Enlightenment ideal is an important aspect in both today s world and during
revolutionary periods

Sadly, this isn t the case, as every estate goes through the process, as it must be determined who gets
his or her assets. Debts must be paid, assets distributed and the final wishes of the deceased respected,
when possible. There are laws governing the process, and they tend to be complex.
Probate1 works with individuals to ensure the process runs smoothly. Our firm works to get the heirs
the maximum amount allowed by law, while fulfilling any obligations. The probate lawyer may be
called in at any time, to create the will, establish a trust or develop documents for a person s medical

the court, Jackson goes on to say.
Estate planning addresses the distribution of assets prior to a person s death. With the estate plan, the
court understands the deceased s final wishes and how he or she wishes their assets to be shared. For
some, the process is simple, as the assets are jointly owned or aren t of high value. Others, however,
have estates that require special consideration. This is true when there are children involved or the

Biff Loman
In 1949, Arthur Miller wrote a play called The Death Of a Salesman . This play is known for its
compelling view on the mind of the middle class working man. The characters in The Death of a
Salesman all have various dimensions of development throughout the story. These characters can all
be seen as components one collective mind using Sigmund Freud s psychoanalytic theory; the
Oedipal, Id, Ego, and Superego. These characters all strive for success by way of the American Dream
and all of it s inconsistent factors and betrayal that personify it so well. Biff Loman is oldest of the
Loman brothers and had always been told he was better than everyone else. Biff believed this and acts
as if he were an Adonis for the entirety of his childhood. Biff has fed into all of the compliments that
his father gave him as a child, and now at the age of 34 is realizing that everything that his life has

Antonio Vivaldi s Influence In The Development Of Music
I selected Antonio Vivaldi as from the list of composers due to his vast influence in the development
of music, including current popular styles such as the double violin concertos and ritornellos, and his
influence on future composers such as Bach. Vivaldi s significance to the music world is further
emphasized by the introduction and popularization of concepts such as his usage of rhythm to create
escalating tension and the application of motivic elements as themes for his pieces. Vivaldi s life was
set out to pursue priesthood from a young age yet, ironically, an illness allowed him to follow his true
passion as both a violinist and composer. Antonio Vivaldi remained pious throughout his life and it

Human Rights Violations And Lack Of Supervision
Peacekeepers have been deployed into regions in conflict with the purpose of creating conditions of
lasting peace. They are mostly stationed in areas of Africa and the Middle East, but they are also
stationed in Haiti and in Europe. Some of the conflicts they try to remedy include human rights
violations, environmental damage, and child abuse. For the most part, peacekeepers are a huge help in
stabilizing a country or region in conflict and are beneficial to the public. However, some
peacekeepers abuse their power as a result of minimal supervision. There have been reports of
peacekeepers using excessive force, being corrupt and sexually abusing civilians. In the case of

There are 16 peacekeeping operations worldwide, mainly in parts of Africa and parts of Asia to handle
conflicts. To combat peacekeepers abusing their power Brazil has supported the United Nation in
imposing of a zero tolerance policy for situations of misconduct and thoroughly investigates all
credible accusations. However, often times people who are victimized by peacekeeper misconduct are
afraid to come forward or do not have the resources to report. In order to combat the occurrence of
power abuse, peacekeepers are required to adhere to the Ten Rules , which is a code of conduct. This
code requires that Peacekeepers respect natives and their cultures, act with compassion, behave in a
dignified manner, hold themselves to high moral standards and respect the environment . Members
have been given a card, with these rules printed on them since 1998. As of 2007, the General
Assembly has also adopted the United Nations Comprehensive Strategy on Assistance and Support to
Victims of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse by United Nations Staff and Related Personnel, which helps
outline methods to support victims of peacekeeper abuse . In recent times, there as been an increase in
attention to peacekeeper misconduct and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has tried to
remedy the problem by placing more people in missions. Brazil has also actively participated in these

Reflective Statement:
One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich was written by Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Solzhenitsyn was born
on December 11th, 1918 in Kislovodsk, Russia. He was 89 when he died on August 3rd 2008.
Solzhenitsyn based the book on the World War 2 period, particularly the famous labour camps for
prisoners in Germany and East Prussia known as gulags . Life in the gulags were tough due to the
gulags being open aired and given the sub zero temperatures, survival was difficult. Solzhenitsyn, in
this book, describes the difficulty of life in the gulag, full of brutality, hard manual labour, sub zero
temperatures, the disgusting food rationed to the prisoners and survival. Only people who are able to
cope with the conditions and manage the system can hope to survive. I chose the novel One day in the
life of Ivan Denisovich as I found the book, especially the gulags, interesting. My topic is How is the

Constantine s Conversion To Christianity
The Conversion of Constantine
During the period of the 3rd Century (250 538) the Church faced many challenges. These challenges
helped make the Church what it is today. One of the events that the Church faced was Constantine s
birth. He was born around 274 and 288. Constantine became the Emperor of Rome in 306. He was
known for being the first Roman Emperor to convert to Christianity. Constantine also established the
city of Constantinople. He is also known as Constantine the great, Constantine I and Saint
Constantine. He gave a great deal of money to those people in need. He even gave money to non
Christians, who had no claim on him. He provided money, food and clothes to those who had nothing.

Safe Driving Essay
Teens need to be taught that driving is a task that is complex and demanding. Parents know how much
experience a young driver has, and they know exactly how inconvenient it is when they have to drive
with their teen everywhere while they have their permit. Teens tend to cause most traffic accidents in
adults eyes. They are not experienced yet, and often fail to pay attention to others on the road. They
often think of a car as being some type of toy, but they do not know how powerful it really is. The
driver education programs must be strengthened in order to make sure that students really have safer
habits, behind the wheel experience, and by having a better understanding of all the laws on the road.

This shows that teens do not take driving seriously and also do not realize what can happen to them if
they continue with bad driving habits. In fact, insurance rates are high enough as it is for teens now. If
they get into a car accident, the insurance rates will sky rocket, their parents may have a hard time
being able to afford the insurance. Traffic crashes are the leading cause of fatalities for teens. As stated
in a magazine, Drivers ages 16 to 19 are four times more than likely than older drivers to crash
(Brophy). This quote shows that teen drivers are involved in more traffic accidents then older drivers.
It has much to do with the young drivers not being safe and making horrible choices while they are
driving or in the car with another person. If teens engage in the driving education course, they will
definitely become more knowledgeable about all the safe ways to drive when their parents do not have
to ride with them anymore. Teen drivers are involved in many car accidents due to unsafe driving
habits. A course on safe driving will give the young driver behind the wheel more experience. The
second reason that teens should attend a driver s education course, is to give the teen driver actual
experience behind the wheel. Parents are mostly

The Public Health Dental Hygienist
In the first case study, the public health dental hygienist is responsible for evaluating the daily
fluoridation test that is submitted by each state to make sure it is in the optimal range 0.7 to 1.2
milligrams per liter. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2011) She is also responsible
for working with the state if the test results do not measure up the standards set forth by the CDC. In
addition the dental hygienist reports all of these results to Centers for Disease control and Prevention
(CDC) so the CDC can determine a national average. This case study shows the assessment part of the
essential public health services. In United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS),
Healthy People 2020 (2011), the report talks about how many improvements have occurred in oral
health but there is still a lot more improvement needed. The report further explains how water
fluoridation has been one of the most efficient ways to reduce decay across the nation. Mostly
everyone has access to water and if the water is fluoridated, then those with little or no access to
dental care are getting preventative dental care in the form of a fluoride regimen in their daily water
intake. (HHS, Healthy People 2020, 2011) Given this, it would only make sense that the government
would employ a dental professional to assess the water fluoridation in every state. As assessment is
usually conducted at two phases in any project. (Burt, 2005) First it is conducted to

The New England And Chesapeake
In the 1600s, America began colonization. Each colony had a specific goal or aspiration that it planned
to achieve. These colonies were separated into different regions among America. Two specific regions
that many historians tend to articulate about. Consisting of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island,
and New Hampshire, the New England region presents many intriguing ways of achieving their goals.
Likewise, the Chesapeake Bay, which contain Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and part of South
Carolina, also have their own ways of achieving different goals. While many focus on the differences
of each region, others focus on the similarities that each of the regions possess. Using common
knowledge and the historical documents that have been stumbled on over the past number of years, the
reader will be able to understand the differences and similarities between the New England and
Chesapeake regions as well as determine whether the differences or similarities benefit the colonies.
Of the two regions, the New England colonies represent a civil and denominated society. The founders
portray those who seek to escape religious victimization that Britain brought down on them. The
colonies are obvious companions of God as document 2 2 says, For the persons, wee are a company
professing our selves fellow members of Christ. The law of New England strictly bases itself on God s
law. Its political structure consists of the lower level and the colonial level governments. At the

How Does Darcy Present Elizabeth Bennet s Marriage
First, The most significant marriage of the novel depicts the ideal vision of the bride Elizabeth Bennet.
Her ideal vision of what a marriage should be was one where the bride and groom had true love for
each other, as well as a mutual respect, and a intellectual connection that far surpassed a physical one.
Elizabeth had no social status or assets. This was an obstacle that Darcy had to overcome throughout
the book. He was constantly influenced by his family and those around him of equal or similar social
status that he should marry someone with some sort of power. However Elizabeth had to overcome her
prejudice towards the upper class, and understand Darcy for who he really was herself. Instead of
listening to and believing others opinions and gossip. This marriage clearly fits the description of its
bride s ideal marriage.
Next, George and Lydia s marriage was used to save Lydia and the Bennet family reputation. When
Lydia and George run away out of wedlock this potentially ruins the other Bennet sisters chance at
marrying into the upper class. Mrs. Bennet then manipulates the marriage although George is in severe

The Afterlife of Ancient Greece
Where do we go when we die? This is a question that most people spiritual or not ask themselves at
least once within their lifetime. In reality, this question is likely to never be answered, but is
nevertheless an exciting area for study. Every culture, every religion and every individual person has
some type of theory or belief on what happens to us after our bodies meet their final rest, and the
ancient Greeks were no exception to this. The ancient Greek view on life after death is the most
interesting to study, and belongs to perhaps one of the most influential belief systems to emerge within
the ancient world. Rife with mythology and magic, the beliefs of the afterlife that were held by the
ancient Greek people included the idea of a heaven vs. hell, reincarnation and the notion of katabasis ,
and were so powerful they paved the way for future religions ideologies. The ancient Greeks were a
highly superstitious and spiritual people. As the Greeks had no written book or scripture of their faith,
it can be assumed that the ancient peoples lived their lives based on the stories told within their
mythology. Mythology was used for various reasons, the three major ones being as a cosmogony, as
etiological stories to explain otherwise unexplainable phenomena, and as a means to deter mortals

The Key Causes For Tax Evasion
People can be driven to behave recklessly if an outcome is well supported by incentives. The
motivational aspect of an outcome is exactly what pushes companies and individuals alike to perform
a task that they would normally not do. Motivation is the key cause for tax evasion, since it helps
avoid a massive proportion of expenses that would generally be incurred. As illustrated by the case
study that was provided by the Australian Financial Review, a small number of people do heavy tax

significant amount of money and due to progressive tax rates, the overall amount of tax that this small

This concept has shown prominence through every stage of business evolution and has still remained
as an essential factor that every business in the modern generation strives to achieve. Profit not only
shows a company s efficient performance, but it also dictates how the company will be accepted
within a society. This is supported by Friedman (1962, pp.23), as he mentions that ethical
compromises can be made to achieve greater goals. Since the most fundamental goal of every business
organisation is to earn profits and succeed amongst their competitors, it can be agreed that companies
would be willing to sacrifice a certain amount of ethical decision making. The opportunity cost in this
case is preferable for the people that would want to give up a portion of their ethical mindset to earn a
larger profit share for their own selfish career oriented desires. (Lincoln, Pressley, Little, 1982,
pp.476).
Taking the aforementioned fact that profit is main goal of a company into consideration, it is crucial to
understand that accounting is the crux of every business organisation. The Conceptual Framework
clearly states that all information within financial reports should be free of bias and material error, i.e.

A Brief History of African Music Through the Colonial Period
A Brief History of African Music through The Colonial Period
Music before the 20th century was very different when compared to the music of the 21st Century.
There were distinctive occasions for each type of African music. West African music, the African
Diaspora, and the music of the Colonies each had different musical instruments.
West African music was the music of the African people before the Europeans captured and sold them
into slavery in the Americas. It was unique in the manner in which it was played as well as the reasons
why it was played. West African music was documented around the 1600 s when explorers wrote

Black slaves were being taken away from their families and were not permitted to bring material

for what their master taught them. Some Africans learned to play a musical instrument by watching
other white male musicians. Some became relatively famous. They had memories and their culture of
music to keep their minds off of their enslavement. Their music in Africa was reflected in the new
songs they sang as a release from the physical and mental cruelty of their new slavery.
During the Colonial Era slaves were allowed to attend church Sundays. This brought congregational
singing into their lives. Black men and women had there own special pews and they would chant one
or two lines at a time ending on a definite pitch and then the congregation would follow singing with
the same line. This was called lining out which still lingers on in black churches today. They learned
to sing psalms by hearing them and then ach time they were sung, the tune would change a little.
Singing schools eventually started appearing so people could receive correct singing . Organs were
brought into churches. During the 1730 s a more upbeat singing pattern came to the churches called
Hymnody. They were religious poems rather then psalms which

Persuasive Essay On Robotics
Despite being stereotyped as nerdy by many, robotics is a rewarding extracurricular that can be
beneficial to anyone. Robotics is a program centralized around STEM, which stands for science,
technology, engineering, and math. Today, many schools will have a robotics program, most of which
are run by either VEX or FIRST. All of these programs are centralized around a team working together
to build a robot to the best of their ability to score as many points as possible. All the while,
participants also learn teamwork and technical skills that can be applied to the real world. I have been
a part of VEX Robotics Competition for three years, and prior to that participated in FIRST Lego
League for five years. Throughout this essay, I will mainly focus on VEX Robotics Competition, as
that is the program that I am currently a part of. STEM and robotics programs in schools must become
more available and receive more time and attention because they help train students for engineering
fields which are steadily growing, assist students in being accepted into colleges, and transform
lessons in school into practical, real world skills. To begin, engineering fields have shown consistent
growth, so it is important that students are prepared for pursuing these fields. Experience early on with
practical skills in a robotics club setting can give students an edge if they choose to go into
engineering. For this reason, it is important that robotics be available to as many students as

The Importance Of A Career In Computer Engineering
Ever since the seventh grade I was always interested in building a computer. All my friends were
playing videogames on their computers and, so I wanted to build one. They were way too expensive,
so I never got the chance. I enjoy fixing computers and helping my family with their technical issues.
Everything is run by electronics these days, so I might as well get good at using them and seeing how
they work.
In the career field of engineering, there is a broad field and offers several alternative career paths.
Those interested in working with engineers and developers to create the code for software programs
and systems should consider a career in computer programming. After reviewing plans and
operational diagrams from software developers, programmers use specialized tools and programming
languages to produce the finished product. They also analyze and test existing products to identify and

Computer hardware engineer is another possible career route in this industry. As the name implies, this
career focuses on creating, improving, and evaluating the various parts that make up the computers

Safe Water Drinking And Pollution
In today s society, we face a large set of problems that affect each and every person every single day.
Throughout the semester, there have been several different instances that have shown the importance
of truly understanding what these issues are and how some of these issues can be fixed. The main
environmental issue that I am going to discuss I this paper is safe water drinking and pollution, as
pollution directs towards to the hazardous we do to it by simply polluting as well as how some of our
pollution affects the air and living conditions that we face. I chose this environmental issue because I
find it to be one of the largest issues that the whole world faces, especially here in Northwest Indiana,
which not enough people take as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are such strategies that must help address any concerns, foster development in new strategies,
protect the water, and work together in developing access to the water systems. These initiatives of
people who are looking to ensure safe water is continuously looked over by larger groups of people
and acts such as the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, Safe Drinking Water Act, and even people
like the Natural resources Conservation Service and the Environmental Protection Agency. What
people sometimes forget is that under these acts, while there are people who are looking to help
support these initiatives, the people who embrace the world must practice better strategies that will
embrace these acts and support groups to help ensure that water will be safe for drinking. Many
people forget that water is not just a free good to us for use at any time, because if the water supply
were to ever be completely damaged and polluted, the outreach for fresh, safe water to drink would be
minimal, therefore a struggle for people in America as well as around the world. Water is arguably the
most important natural resource to us here on Earth and should not be used and abused. There are
several different things that people can work towards to help make things better. The main three types
of ways to help assist all these acts the government and other support groups can do is to advertise
support groups, advertise about contamination and also advertise

Analysis Of Memory And Time In Faulkner s The Sound And...
Sartre and Brooks Literary Critiques: Analysis of Memory and Time in Faulkner s The Sound and the
Fury
History is the witness that testifies to the passing of time. Cicero presaged the study of historical
memory and conceptions of time, which assumes that what and how we remember molds our past into
something more than a chronological succession of events. Ever more appreciative of the subjectivity
of recollection, we grasp that without memory, time passes away as little more than sterile chronology.
In literary as well as literal history, time derives its meaning from Bergson s duration time as personal
consciousness (322). In Faulkner s fiction, duration is a centerpiece, even as chronology fails. Such is
the case in The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sartre argues convincingly that the future does not exist for the Compsons; there is only a continued
renewal of the present. The present is riddled with gaps through which things of the past . . . invade it.
Thus past and present are collapsed into one, where the present moves along in the shadow . . . and
reappears only when it itself is past (266 67). History for Faulkner s characters is composed of
emotional constellations which define the past in terms of resurfacing personal experience. Thus, there
is no perspective other than of the heart, and the past becomes an obsession (268).
Certainly this is true of Quentin, but I think Sartre could use this well turned analysis toward a fresh
interpretation of Jason, whom most critics cast as totally unconcerned with the past (assuming, I
believe, that the past for all the Compsons is, like Quentin s, driven by honor). In fact, memory
compels Jason as powerfully as it does Quentin. An obsessive quest to make up for the time lost to
broken promises fuels his existence. His hatred of Miss Quentin and his theft from her is not just real
time animosity or miserliness, but a manifestation of his continually growing resentment of Caddy,
whom he blames for all his troubles. Every cruelty, every dollar allows him to claim what he feels
would have been his. When Quentin steals Jason s money, she lays waste to his investment in getting
even. With Quentin, Caddy and the money gone,

As the story begins, Jem s superficial idea of courage reveals his immature nature, as his ignorance defines his judgement. At the start of the novel, Jem s idea of bravery is simply touching the side of the Radley house, and then only because In all his life, Jem had never declined a dare. In this instance Jem has an urge to boast about his masculinity, in the form of a perceived bravery. • 4. Predestination In Martin Luther s Institutes Of The... The Protestant Reformation was a movement in 16th century Europe that developed many new beliefs about Christianity. Along with the man who started the Reformation, Martin Luther, John Calvin is one of the most well known and influential theologians of this time. In his highly influential book, Institutes of the Christian Religion, Calvin lays out his main beliefs about many of the major doctrines of the Christian church. One of the biggest ideas Calvin explores in this book is the relationship between humans and God in terms of predestination. Ultimately, Calvin argues that God, as the creator of the world and an inherently righteous being, holds the power of salvation and damnation as humans act in accordance with God s will. Before ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Calvin gives an example of one of these potential arguments in Institutions: [God] adopts as sons those whom he foreknows will not be unworthy of his grace; he appoints to the damnation of death those whose dispositions he discerns will be inclined to evil intention and ungodliness (Institutes 932). This reasoning seems consistent with what Calvin says about predestination, and would show that as humans, our works merit our salvation. This argument aligns with what a merit theologian such as Erasmus would argue. Erasmus holds that God respects the free will of humans, and will send them to heaven or hell based on their free actions. For if God elects those who are worthy of election and damns those unworthy, it seems that we should be able to merit salvation through our actions, as theologians such as Erasmus would argue. According to Calvin, however, these critics misinterpret his teaching. The easiest argument to make, from Calvin s perspective, is that God has given to humans everything they have without them meriting any of it. The most basic example of this is that he created each man as a human in his own image rather than as an animal. This is an example that shows how God gives benefits to humans without them meriting them, and this idea can be extended to the benefit God gives the elect after they pass. According to Calvin, such benefits were given to us before the creation of the world, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Collectivism In Anthem To The Fountainhead, By Ayn Rand Collectivism is a very common theme in Ayn Rand s writing. From Anthem to The Fountainhead, her opinion is very clear: individualism is the source of freedom and joy, while collectivism is the root of sorrow and slavery. In Anthem, the main character, Equality 7 252, has grown up in a collectivist society that has remained strong for centuries. In that society, no one has had the choice to do what they want to do, love what (or who) they love, and simply be who they are. That society praises the idea that men live only for each other. Living for oneself is evil, a Transgression. The idea of I , Me , and Mine has disappeared, dragging the precious words along with it. Throughout the plot, Equality 7 2521 is seen both unintentionally and intentionally defying his society. At first, he condemns himself, describing his evil acts and mind and labeling his different mindset as a curse. We were born with a curse. It has always driven us to thoughts which are forbidden. (Rand 18) He is also condemned by others, for things he cannot control. He is taller than most other people, he has preferences for what he wishes to become, and he has ideas and opinions. Yet when his life assignment is Street Sweeper, he rejoices. He sees that as a way to pay penance for his sins. Later on, however, he embraces his individuality. I am. I think. I will. (Rand 94) He is the first to accept the idea of individuality for centuries, and helps others accept it, too. A similar struggle is seen in The Fountainhead. The main character of that novel, . Howard Roark, has to defend himself in court after dynamiting a government housing project that he designed. An agreement was made that the project would be built exactly as designed, but it wasn t, so Roark made a protest against collectivism by destroying the project. He ends up in court. He then delivers a moving speech titled The Soul of an Individualist . In it he proclaims his individualism, and denounces collectivism as a parasitic system in which no one can achieve anything or truly live. I came here to say that I do not recognize anyone s right to one minute of my life. Nor to any part of my energy. Nor to any achievement of mine. No matter who makes the claim, how large ... He was a key leader of the Protestant Reformation. He wrote many protestant works like Institutes of the Christian Religion. Calvin was also a revolutionary theologian and leader, developing the religion of Calvinism and doctrine of predestination. In addition, Calvin reorganized the city of Geneva, Switzerland and made it into an example theocracy. John Calvin died on May 27th, 1564 in Geneva, Switzerland, but his ideas and achievements have lived on. In fact, the average citizen should care about him because of the contributions he has made to the world, however positive or negative they may be. John Calvin s three main contributions that make him historically significant are his development of the doctrine of predestination, his revolutionary reform of the education system, and his emphasis on the protestant work ethic. John Calvin s doctrine of predestination is arguably one of the most important results of the Protestant reformation. Predestination is the belief that salvation[entrance into heaven] is given to only those whom god has chosen . The chosen people were called the elect. John Calvin wrote this important belief during the era of the Protestant Reformation. People often formed negative opinions on predestination or let it rule their lives. • 10. Economies Of Scale And Scope Economies of Scope: Economies of scale and scope help producers lower their cost by producing the next unit of output at lower costs this trend continues until production reaches a level of diseconomies of scale where production is no longer running as efficient as it should. This tends to increase the barriers to entry for new competitors as when they enter the market they will experience a higher cost of production. Why? Solely because they have smaller economies of scale and cannot afford to sell the product at the same price as other much larger firms. Generally, economies of scale and scope positively affect General Electric. Since General Electric is one of the biggest conglomerates in the world it has the opportunity to offer products and services through the same organization. These products might be highly unalike but due to the wide range of businesses covered by GE the prospect is there. For example, GE, in order to continue a healthy relationship with valued customers, has allowed the multimillion dollar purchase of its jet engines to be financed over long periods of time. The catch is that these finance opportunities are usually done via a leasing arrangement from GE Finance. In recent year GE has pursued a service strategy when it comes to selling aircraft engines. They sell what they call power by the hour this enables the private firm to indirectly rent the engine turbines, in return the firm would award GE with maintenance contracts on the engines. This ... • 12. Summary Of The Argument From Design By William Paley The Argument from Design In William Paley s Argument from Design he seeks to prove God s existence by comparing the world and universe we live in to a machine, specifically a watch. The goal of the design argument is to prove the existence of an omniscient, omnipotent, and wholly good God through the watch analogy. The analogy tries to say that if we look at the creation of the universe like that of a watch, we can infer that it has a purpose and a designer. While this seems to be valid, there are some flaws in Paley s argument that I will point out. Although Paley succeeds in presenting a well thought out argument that shows order in the world, he ultimately fails to prove the existence of an omniscient, omnipotent, and wholly good God. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He explicitly states, It is not necessary that a machine be perfect in order to show with what design it was made; still less necessary, where the only question is whether it was made with any design at all (Paley 60). What Paley fails to talk about is the presence of natural evil in the world and how a defective design would to indicate that the designer is neither omnipotent nor all good. This brings up the problem of evil, which becomes a significant factor while looking at the characteristics of God. If God is omnipotent and all good then it can be said the world should be free from imperfections, but it is not, raising the question of whether or not God is in fact all powerful and all good. Additionally, we cannot compare the world we live in to anything because of its complicated design. Because of this, when Paley tries to draw comparisons between the design of the watch to that of the stone, he falls short. In his second attempt to strengthen his argument, Paley again opens up two bigger holes that demonstrate the weakness in his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Enlightenment period in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries was an intellectual movement that inspired thought, question, and reason in people across the continent. It was the age of new ideals that forever altered the course of our world today and will always be a time where tradition was no longer the primary way in which people led their lives. Several Enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire, Rousseau, and Hobbes have influenced multiple government systems to reform their ways by inspiring revolution. Natural Rights creates a democratic republic government where supreme power rests with the people and allows them to elect representatives to operate their country, therefore upsetting citizens since absolute monarchies rule. Natural Rights spawns uprisings and revolution in countries because people believe it to be their right to have shared power which is evident through multiple documents such as The English Bill of Rights, U.S. Constitution, and The Declaration of the Rights of Man. John Locke s idea of Natural Rights created a whole new aspect of how the government should be constructed. In reality, this question is likely to never be answered, but is nevertheless an exciting area for study. Every culture, every religion and every individual person has some type of theory or belief on what happens to us after our bodies meet their final rest, and the ancient Greeks were no exception to this. Rife with mythology and magic, the beliefs of the afterlife that were held by the ancient Greek people included the idea of a heaven vs. hell, reincarnation and the notion of katabasis , and were so powerful they paved the way for future religions ideologies. The main environmental issue that I am going to discuss I this paper is safe water drinking and pollution, as pollution directs towards to the hazardous we do to it by simply polluting as well as how some of our pollution affects the air and living conditions that we face. I chose this environmental issue because I find it to be one of the largest issues that the whole world faces, especially here in Northwest Indiana, which not enough people take as ... There are such strategies that must help address any concerns, foster development in new strategies, protect the water, and work together in developing access to the water systems. These initiatives of people who are looking to ensure safe water is continuously looked over by larger groups of people and acts such as the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, Safe Drinking Water Act, and even people like the Natural resources Conservation Service and the Environmental Protection Agency. What people sometimes forget is that under these acts, while there are people who are looking to help support these initiatives, the people who embrace the world must practice better strategies that will embrace these acts and support groups to help ensure that water will be safe for drinking. Many people forget that water is not just a free good to us for use at any time, because if the water supply were to ever be completely damaged and polluted, the outreach for fresh, safe water to drink would be minimal, therefore a struggle for people in America as well as around the world. Water is arguably the most important natural resource to us here on Earth and should not be used and abused. There are several different things that people can work towards to help make things better. The main three types of ways to help assist all these acts the government and other support groups can do is to advertise support groups, advertise about contamination and also advertise ... • 42. Analysis Of Memory And Time In Faulkner s The Sound And... Sartre and Brooks Literary Critiques: Analysis of Memory and Time in Faulkner s The Sound and the Fury History is the witness that testifies to the passing of time. Cicero presaged the study of historical memory and conceptions of time, which assumes that what and how we remember molds our past into something more than a chronological succession of events. Ever more appreciative of the subjectivity of recollection, we grasp that without memory, time passes away as little more than sterile chronology. In literary as well as literal history, time derives its meaning from Bergson s duration time as personal consciousness (322). In Faulkner s fiction, duration is a centerpiece, even as chronology fails. Such is the case in The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sartre argues convincingly that the future does not exist for the Compsons; there is only a continued renewal of the present. The present is riddled with gaps through which things of the past . . . invade it. Thus past and present are collapsed into one, where the present moves along in the shadow . . . and reappears only when it itself is past (266 67). History for Faulkner s characters is composed of emotional constellations which define the past in terms of resurfacing personal experience. Thus, there is no perspective other than of the heart, and the past becomes an obsession (268). Certainly this is true of Quentin, but I think Sartre could use this well turned analysis toward a fresh interpretation of Jason, whom most critics cast as totally unconcerned with the past (assuming, I believe, that the past for all the Compsons is, like Quentin s, driven by honor). In fact, memory compels Jason as powerfully as it does Quentin. An obsessive quest to make up for the time lost to broken promises fuels his existence. His hatred of Miss Quentin and his theft from her is not just real time animosity or miserliness, but a manifestation of his continually growing resentment of Caddy, whom he blames for all his troubles. Every cruelty, every dollar allows him to claim what he feels would have been his. When Quentin steals Jason s money, she lays waste to his investment in getting even. With Quentin, Caddy and the money gone, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
