Western Film Research Paper
Western Essay
Alannah Jones
When you think about film genre, you may ask yourself questions such as, how has it evolved over
time? Why has it evolved over time? How has it shaped popular culture? Film, regardless of the genre,
consists of elements, in which makes it a film. In a western genre, you may look for elements such as
costumes, effects/editing, and narrative. What about these elements makes them important in a
Western film?
In the film industry, costumes are an important element. Not only do the costumes support the genre,
but they also conduct character s representation. In the film The Magnificent 7 , Yul Brynner, the man
who creates the magnificent seven, is dressed in all black. Whereas, every other character is either in

In the first film, which I mentioned above, special effects and editing had not been strongly developed
quite yet. You notice this during some points in the film. Including, whenever a character was shot,
there was no immediate effect. Typically the character would grasp their chest, around the heart area,
and fall forward onto the ground, revealing the blood and injury from the bullet on their back.
Whereas in the second film, after Butch and Sundance were shot, there was immediate effect. They
both sat down in hiding, felt their injury and when they lifted their hands, they were covered in blood.
In the third film, when a man was shot, he was taken back to a small town, and a veterinarian
attempted at taking the bullet out of his chest, you could clearly see the injury and the damage it had
caused this man. Editing and effects have evolved drastically. These days in films, once someone hits
the ground, whether it be from a gunshot, or some other type of hit, you instantly see blood. Either
pooling beside their heads or by their sides, or their hands dripping with it. Editing and effects have
become so realistic, that it has shaped popular culture to the point of where, the effects can t be any
less than what they are. If editing and effects, were to be less, they would be criticised and not

Computer Operating System
1. Introduction to Operating System:
Computer is a somewhat complex machine. The world has become accustomed to so many choices.
One of the major choices in the modern era is the Operating System (OS) . Operating systems are the
central software component to any computer. The main brands of operating system are; Windows Mac
OS, Sun Solaris, UNIX, DOS and Linux. Each brand has its own take on what makes up an operating
system. Windows is the most commonly used operating system around the world. The most common
advantage about Windows is its simplicity. It is now very easy for an inexperienced person to grasp
the concept and use the computer with this operating system on it. Windows newest version is Vista
and windows7. Vista has made ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Its current best selling products are the Microsoft Windows operating system and the Microsoft Office
suite of productivity software.
Starting in 1980, Microsoft formed an important partnership with IBM that allowed them to bundle
Microsoft s operating system with computers that they sold, paying Microsoft a royalty for every sale.
In 1985, IBM requested that Microsoft write a new operating system for their computers called OS/2;
Microsoft wrote the operating system, but also continued to sell their own alternative, which proved to
be in direct competition with OS/2. Microsoft Windows eventually overshadowed OS/2 in terms of
sales. When Microsoft launched several versions of Microsoft Windows in the 1990s, they had
captured over 90% market share of the world s personal computers.

My Personal Statement On Being Observed
The targeted behavior being observed will be the frequency of verbalizations of the following curses:
fuck, shit, damn, bitch, and ass, as well as any variations of them (e.g. asshole). Each instance of
cursing will be recorded, as well as what happened both immediately before and after the curse was
spoken. My emotional states for both before and after I curse will also be included. Equipment utilized
during the observation period included a Memos application on my cell phone, the Sticky Notes
application on my laptop, and a data sheet and frequency graph I created in Excel for this purpose. I
enlisted the help of my friends and family to ensure that every occurrence of the target behavior was
recorded. If no one was around to remind me, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In terms of external influences, it appeared that I cursed a lot when I was around my friends, such as
D, S, and M. Alongside that, I believe that I was receiving reinforcement for the target behavior when
my peers laughed following my statements.
Treatment Design, Implementation, and Evaluation
The goal of this modification project is to entirely eliminate my use of cursing. A secondary goal, if
the primary one is not met, is to decrease the frequency of cursing to 1 2 times max. I would be
utilizing a positive punishment procedure to assist in the elimination of the target behavior.
Punishment would be in the form of a rubber band that would be aggressively snapped against my
wrist immediately following the occurrence of the target behavior. I asked my peers and family
members to snap the band every time they hear me curse. Whenever I was alone, I would be
conscientious of my speech, as I was during the baseline observation period, and administer the
punishment myself upon each occurrence. In this instance, the pain I feel when the rubber band is
snapped against my skin is an unconditioned punisher. Every occurrence of cursing was recorded right
away. The treatment period started on March 27th and ended April 9th, for a total of 14 days of
treatment. Changes in the frequency of cursing occurred slowly for the first few days. In fact, the
amount of cursing had increased to 14 for the first day of treatment. As can be seen on the graph, the
first day had the highest

Twin Brothers Of The Kray Brothers
Often, we hear tales of gangs and gangsters that rule cities owing to great influence over authoritative
figures. Most of these tales come to us from news about third world countries wrapped in turmoil and
chaos amidst lawlessness. Hence, to imagine a pair of twin brothers leading a gang to rule over
Eastern London during the 50s 60s era is difficult, to say the least. To say that the Kray Brothers were
the foremost perpetrators of organized crime in East London would be an understatement. The twins
were individually known as Ronald Ronnie Kray and Reginald Reggie Kray. The twins were born into
violence and under the influence of their grandfather, took up boxing. This was a common hobby for
young boys in East London. Sibling Rivalry spurred them on and the brothers experienced great
success, reportedly not losing a match until the age of 19. But alas, the call of a life of crime was
simply too attractive to repel hence off they went, robbing stores, hijacking vehicles and murdering
their enemies. In 1942, the brothers had a fight and Reggie had beaten Ronnie almost to death. Ronnie
suffered from schizophrenia at an early age and had to take pills to control his temper barring a
monstrous rage. London had fallen in to a state of future turmoil unbeknownst to them during the year
1933, the year of the twins birth. Their vice and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Francis, Reggie s ex wife, committed suicide, leaving behind a devastated gangster who had

Essay on France s Welfare System
The welfare system in France is founded on the principle of solidarity. Solidarity is sense of the
responsibility of the individuals in the society to help each other out. This is all for the common good
(Spicker). In order to promote solidarity, France has a welfare system that includes universal
entitlements, social insurance, means tested public assistance, and tax expenditures programs. One
aspect of the French welfare system is universal entitlements. One universal entitlement under the
French welfare system is health insurance. Every citizen in Frances is able to have healthcare
insurance. For those citizens that are employed, the employer and employee both finance the
insurance. However, the government pays for the health care of ... Show more content on

However, this assistance ends once the child becomes three years old (Evans 1997). Means test public
assistance is one way the French promote the principle of solidarity. Social insurance is also a
different facet of the welfare system in France. One example of social insurance is unemployment
insurance. If one loses their job, the person receives 35% of the income that he or she received while
employed. For those that are unable to work due to age or disabilities, the government has an
assistance program in place. The French also have a pension system that is similar to Social Security
in the United States. The system is a pay as you go one. Both the employer and employee give to this
pension fund. Once the individual is old enough, he or she will receive this retirement money
(Wingert). One more feature the French welfare state is tax expenditure programs. An example of a
tax expenditure that is found in France is a tax benefit for married couples. There are many more
established tax expenditures; one of which is for those with children. In fact, there are so many tax
expenditures that France spends over 0.5% of its gross domestic product on tax breaks just towards the
family. Tax expenditures programs are another part the France s welfare system (Bentolila 2011). Like
most wealthy countries, France was affected by the Great Recession; however, France was not hit as

Persuasive Essay On Becoming A Knight
A knight is a man who served his sovereign or lord as a mounted soldier in armor. They were well
trained fighters, knights were military retainers, often of humble means, but defined by their military
vocation and their ability rather than any lineages ( Richard). They surfaced in the Middle Ages
because it was a time when Lords needed protections along with their territories. To become a knight
was not easy there were many steps towards fulfilling knighthood. Not only did it take years of
training to become a knight, but it also took bravery, courtesy, and honor known as chivalry and
courtly love. A man without those qualities did not have what it takes to play this role. Knights of the
Middle Ages were first and premier warriors who fought from horseback, wore body covering armor,
and used weapons such as swords and daggers to fight and protect in battle. There were five steps to
knighthood, becoming a knight took years of training, during which a young man learned how to fight,
ride, and behave in proper, knightley manner (Corrick 29). The first step to becoming a knight was
having the right connections because it was very expensive to buy all the equipment necessary in
protecting himself on the battlefield. That being said a knight usually came from a noble or wealthy
family. The upbringing is the second step, if a boy came from the right family and had the ambition to
be a knight by the age of seven he would have to learn all basic manners and what the role of a

Philospher Mill s Greatest Happiness Principle
Philospher Mill, believes that the moral law or golden rule is utilitarianism. He uses the greatest
happiness principle, and states that everyone wants to and ought to be happy. So, what is each person s
pleasure? If one has things that bring them pleasure, then there must be things that also bring them
pain. Both elements must be considered when making a decision, otherwise those involved will not be
able to achieve the greatest happiness. Furthermore, there will be consequences of these pleasures and
pains. The consequences will affect more than just me or them, they will affect all interests
surrounding the situation. But, who are the interests and should they all be weighed upon the same?
Do interests, have interests apart from my own? According to Mill, all interests must be treated the
same and in order to do so we have to look at situations from an outside perspective. In doing this, it
allows for us to provide the greatest good for the greatest number of people, again satisfying the
greatest happiness principle. For example, let us use the train tracks. On one side, there are 20 random

Codenamed Operations Plan (OPLAN) 34A, the activities were conceived and overseen by the
Department of Defense, with the support of the Central Intelligence Agency, and carried out by the
South Vietnamese Navy. Initial successes, however, were limited; numerous South Vietnamese raiders
were captured, and OPLAN 34A units suffered heavy casualties. In July 1964, Lieutenant General
William C. Westmoreland, commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, shifted
the operation s tactics from commando attacks on land to shore bombardments using mortars, rockets,
and recoilless rifles fired from South Vietnamese patrol boats. It is also notable that McNamara in this
conversation clearly favors explaining to Congress the link between the incident and the OPLAN 34A
activities. The naval battle between the destroyer USS Maddox and several North Vietnamese torpedo
boats occurred in the immediate aftermath of a series of 34 A maritime raids on North Vietnamese
coastal targets. After observing North Vietnamese patrol torpedo boats pursuing the vessels that had
attacked Hon Me, the Maddox withdrew from the area. Nevertheless, when later queried by NSA
headquarters, the destroyer indicated she had been unaware of the OPLAN raid on the island. That
ignorance set the stage for a showdown between North Vietnamese forces

The New Science of Pseudoscience
Nineteenth century America was a tumultuous place, marred by war and suffering the growing pains
of both westward expansion and industrialization. The intellectual world was equally turbulent, as a
great battle of ideas challenged the foundation and morality of the institution of slavery. Pro slavery
advocates had to find new ways of justifying their beliefs in order to provide a different perspective
from which to view slavery, other than an economic standpoint. Southern society began to idealize
science as an indisputable vehicle of objective truth. The rapid advancement of scientific knowledge
lent scientists a halo, as they could claim neutrality and objectiveness. A scientist s word was law and
deemed worthy of imitation. Because of the belief that scientists were unbiased and impartial when
conducting research, scientists in the South attempted to legitimize pro slavery arguments by
providing pseudoscientific evidence proving the superiority of whites and the inability of blacks to be
self sufficient as freedmen. Dr. Samuel George Morton, a famous physician and researcher in natural
history, provided the South with flawed anthropological evidence in order to bolster the anti
abolitionist case. His universal acclaim for devotion to objective data allowed for his research to
become popular and widespread throughout the United States, especially the South. Dr. Morton s
study was based on his measurements of human crania. His collection of skulls was the largest in

of smaller cities such as Hudson Oaks or Willow Park. The district encompasses 280,567 households

Review on the Novel Atonement
Review on Atonement
It is not often that the protagonist of a story be the anathema of the story as well and it is even more of
a rarity that the particular character be a young child. Yet, this is exactly what Ian McEwan has done
with his Crime Novel, Atonement. McEwan intentionally turns his readers against Briony Tallis, a
young girl transitioning from the naivete of childhood into the new and confusing years of
adolescence; a point in one s life when mistakes are dubbed as necessary stepping stones to further
understand one s self rather than life long regrets and unsubduable self loathing. McEwan takes the
innocence of childhood and juxtaposes it with despicable crimes and unchangeable mistakes, thus
creating a protagonist the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Robbie Turner is trying to survive each turbulent day in war with thoughts of Cecilia as motivation.
McEwan describes World War Two brilliantly by creating scenes of unthinkable death and suffering
whilst threading hope and love to convey the complexities of war. It s during these pages that the
reader realizes the full consequence of Briony s actions. Briony herself, witnessing the horror and
carnage of war in the hospital, is distraught as ever about the incident. She has stopped writing thus
imprisoning the same imagination that destroyed so many relationships. Cecilia defended Robbie
against her family, and in doing so cut them off entirely, the foremost being Briony. This only
intensifies the readers distaste for Briony and the effect she let herself make. Her internal conflict
evolves for the worse with time, and even with the sacrifices she makes, it is clear atonement is far off
in the distance from herself, her family, Robbie, or the reader.McEwan takes what is ethical and
distorts it using the relationships between the characters. He uses some of the most sensitive
relationships, such as sisters and lovers, to evoke questions in the reader: what mistake could lead to a
loss of family? Of love? Family is often a symbol of eternal love, but in Atonement, that symbol is
shattered. The bonds of family love cannot always be healed with apologies. McEwan integrates the
unchangeable law that an action must have a reaction, some of which, can never be

Aerobic Respiration And Aerobic Respiration
Aerobic respiration, also known as cellular respiration, is an essential process for the production of
ATP and occurs in 3 metabolic stages. The stages included are glycolysis, the Kreb s cycle, and
oxidative phosphorylation. Throughout the whole process, glucose or various other saccharides are
broken down, producing CO2, ATP, NADH, Pyruvate, and FADH2. Aerobic respiration and anaerobic
respiration are very similar, the only difference is the final electron acceptor, as Aerobic respiration
involves oxygen. In order to study and detect how much cellular respiration occurs in an organism, the
amount of glucose used, the amount of oxygen consumed, or the amount of CO2 given off can be
measured. Bread, wine, and beer are all made from yeast. Yeast must go through cellular respiration
and produce CO2 in order for the bread to rise and form properly; however, different monosaccharides
may affect the level of CO2, measured in mL, given off by Saccharomyces cerevisiae (found in yeast),
while affecting yeast s ability to metabolize during glycolysis. Durham tubes (a sealed, cut off 5 mL,
pipette) can be used to measure the amount of CO2 produced as the yeast metabolizes.
The approached used was to test the level of CO2 (mL) production, after different solutions with 1.5
mL of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and 4.5 mL and either 1M of glucose, fructose, or galactose go
through cellular respiration. The higher level of CO2 produced indicates the more cellular respiration
that took place. A

Since 1913, Clorox has had a reputation of leading the industry with its products.
This situational analysis includes industry forces, company statistics and financial information, a list
of environmental factors that deal with how the company operates, and competitor information.
Industry Forces
The Clorox Company does business within the industry of Nondurable Goods; especially relevant to
the product of Disinfecting Wipes, the company is associated with the sub industry of Household
Products. Two significant forces should be considered when examining the industry and individual
companies within this industry: innovation and competition.
Threat of Substitutes and Innovation
The threat of substitutes for the Household Products of the Nondurables Industry is high. As
mentioned before, each company produces a product that is very similar to its competitors. Customers
also have high bargaining power in that they can buy substitute products such as paper towels and
disinfecting sprays. If a company does not spend time and effort marketing its products, consumers
will not be able to differentiate them from a competitor.
The typical household product has a life of approximately five years from the conception of the
product until it is stripped from shelves. The product will go through one to two years of development,
testing, and marketing. It will then

Analyse Key Theories Of Conflict Analysis
I aim to analyse key theories which examine the effects of conflict within the workplace. Conflict is a
part of everyday life, as long as we have existed conflict has also. Rahim (2010) defines conflict as an
interactive process manifested in incompatibility, disagreement or dissonance within or between social
entities. However, he expands upon the definition stating debating as to whether the conflict is caused
by the situation or the individuals type of behaviour. This contests the issue of whether conflict is
caused by a particular situation that the employee has experienced or if whether the behaviourism of
the employee is to blame. If organisational conflict is not resolved, several negative consequences can
occur including increased stress among employees, reduced creative collaboration and team problem
solving, disruption to work flow, decreased customer satisfaction, distrust, split camps, and create
gossip amongst the workplace. (Moriarty, 2007).
However, in contrast some academics dispute this, even going as far as suggesting that minor conflicts
can be helpful, and by having the capabilities to deal with conflict ... Show more content on

This will allow critical reflection and analysis as to what could be done differently. There are several
key fundamental concepts involved with the unitarist perspective. The first of which is that it is the
duty of the manager to encourage allegiance and commitment amongst the employees of the firm.
(Farnham, 1993). Consequently, as everyone is working towards the same goal a conflict of interests
is unlikely to occur, resulting in harmony amongst the entire workforce. (Leah, 2001). Conflicts in the
organisations are observed as negative and dysfunctional which subsequently lead to disloyalty,
thereby damaging the well being and harmony of the organisation. (Giles,

expression. Sometimes, this can be problematic and lead to false identities and music miscegenation.
The music industry has had a powerful influence on what listeners consume. In this process,
traditional black music genres have crossed over to the mainstream. This has been problematic in that
it gives listeners the sense that the music industry is fully integrated. In reality, the white dominated
music industry and labels are still using ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This forged an identity of cultural togetherness as time progressed, but in reality, this was just a new
form of cultural appropriation and subjugation. Despite the musical politics in regards to control,
black expression has voiced itself in the past century. The innovations of jazz and gospel music paved
the way for soul, funk, disco, and rhythm blues and then expanded that pathway for rap and hip hop in
the later half of the century. Various innovations such as 12 bar blues and beat matching can be
attributed to African American culture. One genre of music that emerged from African American roots
was disco. Although disco expanded and became popularized in mainstream culture, disco began as an
expression of black and Latino power. Disco possesses elements of Afro Cuban salsa as well as
Jamaican dub, reggae, and ska. Disco served as a versatile cultural tool for not only ethnic minorities
but also gay rights activism, prior to its adoption by white audiences and artists. There was backlash
by white audiences and rock musicians towards black disco artist heard on the radio and this lead to
the coined phrase, disco sucks. Disco went on to die by the eve of the eighties, but elements of groove
and fast paced beats are still prevalent in today s popular music. Many of the R B and rock artists who
conformed to disco during its popularity returned to their authentic identity

A Comparison of Biographic Features in The Sun Also Rises...
A Comparison of Biographic Features in The Sun Also Rises and The Great Gatsby The writers F.
Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway included biographical information in their novels The Great
Gatsby and The Sun Also Rises that illuminated the meaning of the work. Although The Sun Also
Rises is more closely related to actual events in Hemingway s life than The Great Gatsby was to
events in Fitzgerald s life, they both take the same approach. They both make use of non judgemental
narrators to comment on the lost generation . This narrator allows Fitzgerlald and Hemingway to write
about their own society. Fitzgerlald comments on the jaded old wealth society of the Eastern United
States and the corruption of the American Dream. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, based on the details, the narrators conclusions are relatively evident. In this novel,
Fitzgerald is able to write about his experiences from a different perspective and include his self in
both the characters of Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway.
As in many of Fitzgerald s works, he writes about a golden girl 1), the desire of every man that he
couldn t have. In the case of The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald creates the character of Daisy to fit this
discription. In actuality the motivation for Fitzgerald s writing about the golden girl came from real
events. Ginevra King was the love of [Fitzgerald s] young life. 2) In Ginevra s eyes, however,
Fitzgerald was simply one of the many men in her young life and when it came time she dropped him.
3)Most importantly, however, his rejection by Ginevra motivated much of his fiction. 4) In The Great
Gatsby, Daisy is shown by the end to be a very careless and confused who smashed up things and
creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness... and let other people
clean up the mess they had made. 5) This statement from the novel relates to Fitzgeralds own fealings
for Ginevra who used him, then dropped him when it came time leaving Francis devastated.6) This
rejection shaped Fitzgeralds view of women in general and thus affected his characterization of
women. The romance between Fitzgerald and Ginevra King is also given

Knee Jerk Technology Failure
Would you buy a car with bad brakes and drive it until they failed? Who would buy a home and ignore

It never ceases to amaze while in discussions with a prospective client when it comes up that the

Analysis Of The Jungle, By Upton Sinclair
The Jungle, by Upton Sinclair, was a novel written to expose the harsh conditions of the meatpacking
industry. The novel also describes the struggles of a family living in America. The novel changed the
way many looked at society. Fortunately, that was Sinclair s purpose of the novel. In other words,
Sinclair included many themes for the novel like The American Dream , capitalism versus socialism,
and even the horrors of the meatpacking industry. First, Sinclair included the theme of The American
Dream . The American Dream is the idea that the idea that hard work and morality will yield material
success and happiness. As stated in the book, rich or poor, a man was free... he did not have to go into
the army, he did not have to pay out his money to public officials he might do as he pleased and count
himself as good as any other man. This quote explains how Jurgis and his family thought The

Sinclair was basically trying to say socialism is better than capitalism throughout the book. As stated

starvation, and dependent for its opportunities of life upon the whim of men every bit as brutal and
unscrupulous as the old time slave drivers; under such circumstances immorality was exactly as
inevitable, and as prevalent, as it was under the system of chattel slavery. In other words, he was

The End Game Content Of Diablo 3
A Long Journey
The end game content of Diablo 3 has changed a lot since the game was first released way back in
2012, and the steps taken have been progressive with regards to making the inevitable grind for late
game gear less painstaking and more enjoyable. Rifts and bounties have provided clear cut goals at the
late game stage, and the introduction of the enchanter eased the pain of the never ending quest that is
the perfectly rolled drop.
Now, season 4 has arrived, and the people still fighting their way up the seasonal ladder and clutching
at achievement points have a treat in store, with the massive patch 2.3.0 bringing some much
appreciated quality of life improvements and even a fair amount of new content.
The most broadcast change introduced with the new patch is the return of the Kanai s Cube. This
iconic game content has survived the test of time and has been dragged through the decades to bring
its mechanic to the aid of the Nehalem. The cube is earnt through the addition of a faux quest whereby
you are politely asked by Zoltun Kulle (yes he still refuses to die) to go and retrieve the artefact and in
return he will help you use it properly.
For someone with an interest in the lore, this was a nice start, but that is basically much where the
story aspect ends although this is a patch, not an expansion after all, so let s not be ungrateful. The
new zone in Act 3, the Ruins of Sescheron, provides a quaint throwback to the feel of the Lord of
Destruction

What Does The Dream Of The Rood Mean
The Dream of the Rood is a work which inspires one to think, to contemplate, and to begin to better
understand one s own faith. The Rood tells us of its life, from being a tree to being the instrument in
Christ s death to its visions after Christ s death, burial, and resurrection. I felt the Rood s agony as it
became an unwilling participant in the death of the Lord. The purpose of this poem is to bring the
glory back to God, reflecting on his goodness and his purposes in the earth. The dreamer, who heard
and recounted the Rood s story, ends with hope in Christ and a hope in the future of everlasting life in
heaven.
The Rood communicates to the dreamer that God recognizes this type of faith. For its tremendous self
discipline and submission to the Lord s will, the Rood gains a rich reward. Just as Christ s obedience
to his Father was recognized by God, the Rood s faithfulness is also acknowledged. He stresses the
notion that the gift of salvation is so great that it transcends human understanding. The gift of
redemption, which assures man pardon of his sins and never ending happiness in the presence of his
creator, is so immense that it cannot be fully understood in human terms. On the basis of cultural and
ethical concepts valid in this life, man may be able to comprehend part of the mystery of Christ s self
sacrifice, but not the fullness of God s grace. By twisting the theme of service, the poet urges his
audience to give to God the return gift that he demands,

Till Debt Do Us Part By Mary Loftus Summary
A Ferrari at the office and a Kia in the garage, what would the writer say? He says it s a company car,
but in reality, he owns it. He led about his income to his wife, he boasted it was $120,000, when in
reality it was $400,000. Where was the additional $280,000? A secret life of cars and bank accounts.
There was also Donald, the farmer who had obtained a $35,000 loan to replant his crops. Without his
knowledge his wife Susann, with an internet gambling addiction, lost it all. Both examples are of
deceit; one of hidden money, while the other attempts to hides her addiction. Sometimes a little
deception may seem harmless, but in reality it will destroy any and all relationships between friends
and partners. Someone may think, that won t happen to me, I m good with money or my husband is so

Analysis Of Rawl s Theory Of Justice
In this paper, I will summarize Rawl s Theory of Justice where he presents an argument of what is
needed for true justice in a contemporary society. By examining Rawl s philosophy, I will agree with
his original position, veil of ignorance, and justice as fairness which contains his view of human
nature. Then, I will compare and contrase John Lockes differing views of human nature to Rawl s
position of human nature and defend possible assertions towards Rawls position.
Rawls view of human nature assumes everyone makes decisions based on self interest alone, while
making a rational account to the available information around, such as the probability of events and
the cost and benefits of those actions based on those events. An example would be skipping a lecture.
You would decide if the extra sleep is worth the missed material. In answer to fix our self interest,
John Rawls had introduced the concept of Justice as Fairness, which focuses that everyone has the
right to both liberty and equality. His libertarian principles focus on quality in the assignment of basic
rights and duties while his equalitarian principles focus on wealth and authority ... only if they result
in compensating benefits for everyone (Rawls 12). His views of equality are based on everyone s
ability to cooperate, with the advantages of equality attracting everyone, even the less situated. (Rawls
13).
An essential component to Rawls argument is that justice would be chosen from representatives

Christine De Pizan And The Renaissance Period
From 1330 1550, the Renaissance was a period emphasising a revival in the interest of art, music, and
literature. As a result, being culturally advanced was the goal for many individuals. Machiavelli,
Dante, and Chaucer are a few of the men who exhibited these values and defined literature of the time.
Although advancement was a goal of the era, women were seen as subservient to men, excluding them
from education and politics. Christine de Pizan; however, brought awareness to these issues through
her writing. As a result, she exemplifies the Renaissance era, for she was cultured, self reliant, and
aware of the need for change. In 1386, Christine de Pizan was born in Venice, Italy. She is well known

In order to gain income for herself and her three children, she wrote to support her family. According
to the article Christine de Pizan published by Professor Pavlac s Women s History, she became the
first woman in Europe to successfully make a living through writing (Lloyd). This is significant
considering that women during this time were overshadowed by men. Even without a husband, Pizan
sustained life for her family and was independent. Men of the Renaissance strived towards the
advancement of themselves and though she had to unpredictably, Christine de Pizan did such on her
own, resulting in her success. During the Renaissance, literature contained messages that were
prevalent during the time. The section Capturing Reality in Writing in Western Civilizations states,
Now they were being used to critique changing social mores and regimes (Cole and Symes 289). Well
known for her writing The Book of the City of Ladies, Christine de Pizan fights the common
assumptions of the characteristics of women within this book. Pizan addresses that women are more
than their bodies, and wants to gather all women in order to protect them from the suppression of men.
In Christine de Pizan s City of Ladies: A Monumental (Re)Construction of, By, and For Women of All
Time, it states, With these texts, Christine is proving that women can build, are powerful and creative,
and deserve to live in safety and comfort (Wagner 70). Women during Pizan s time did not

Languages form an essential part of every human experience. To express oneself is one of the simplest
joys we can experience. English and Music are two such languages in my life, that indirectly relate to,
have a profound impact on mine. My interests in Music, just as in Literature, extend to a wide array of
genres, whether it be Bob Dylan or Tchaikovsky. After relentless perseverance at the age of 16, My
father bought me a black dreadnought. I spent hours upon hours practicing by watching instructional
videos and my favorite guitar players play. In no time I was playing shows, from winning school
competitions to performing at live music theatre events. I had soon established a name for myself as a
singer songwriter by being a supporting act for many bands. I soon began recording my rendition of
songs on my laptop, eventually writing my own music and now working on my album. This has
proved to be a huge learning curve, in enabling me to understand the dynamics of a composition,
Thereby continually improving myself. In my spare time, I have been teaching English to Arab
students. It has been a remarkably challenging experience. I have learned far more teaching than I had
as a student, in trying to articulate my thoughts in words they could understand. This has been a
humbling and rewarding experience. I realize there remains a vast ocean of knowledge I am still
unaware of, which empowers me to thrive and work hard in an undergraduate environment.

Analysis Of Arnold Wesker s The Kitchen
Britain in the 1950s was rife with many challenges and changes. Whilst the Second World War had
been over for years, war lived in the hearts of the nation. In 1953, Princess Elizabeth became Queen
Elizabeth II, the first female monarch in over 50 years and the ever present struggle of being a woman
in a world of men is referenced in Arnold Wesker s The Kitchen. A kitchen sink drama play, the issues
raised in the play are as relevant today as they were in the 1950s. From abortion to war, and
consequently, immigration, Wesker s play managed to merge the beliefs of two completely different
generations in one play.
David Mathieson states in Radical London in the 1950s, the possibility of Third World War cast a long
shadow over the politics of the 1950s . Many of the characters in The Kitchen came to Britain to
escape the horrors of war, such as Peter, Paul and Frank. Despite the last major war being finished
over a decade previous, there were many wars still being fought across the world with men signing up
to them thanks to the National Service. Moreover, due to the wars, a sundry of people came over to
Britain for a chance at a better life or at least to make money to send over to families in war torn areas
of Europe. However, as immigration increased, so did racial prejudices. This is notable in The Kitchen
through many of the British born characters, Bertha and Violet are just a few. In our version of the

Living Well Chapter 8 Summary
Living well: Chapter 8 A living will is a legal document that indicates whether a patient wants to be
placed on life prolonging machines (also known as life support) should he or she be unable to
communicate personal preferences. Anyone can fill out and place a living will in his or her medical
record, but it must be notarized or signed by two witnesses to be considered legal. Regulations on
living wills vary from state to state, so it is best to obtain one from a local medical facility or consult a
lawyer. So therefore, if the patient does not want life support he or she will have to state it in the living

Essay about Ronald Dworkins Liberal Morality
Dworkin begins by roughly defining liberalism according to the New Deal: It combined an emphasis
on less inequality and greater economic stability with more abundant political and civil liberty for the
groups campaigning for these goals. Dworkin states that such a definition is inadequate and goes on to
elaborate on liberalism in more depth. The liberal, in economic policies, demands that the inequalities
of wealth be reduced through social programs such as welfare and other redistribution financed by a
progressive tax. Liberals also take a Keynesian policy toward the governments stabilizing intervention
in the economy, such as controlling inflation and unemployment. And liberals support freedom of
speech, racial equality and are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The conservative protects the commodity of liberty, valued for its own sake, more effectively than the
liberal. But unlike liberty, equality is a concept that can be shown, and because of this, it can be stated
that conservatives do in fact favor equality less and liberals more.
Two concepts of equality must be distinguished according to Dworkin: the first is that the government
should treat all its citizens, or all those that are in its charge as equals, and the second principle of
equality requires that the government treat all of those in its charge equally in the distribution of some
resource of opportunity. Liberals sense of equality will fall more into the latter idea of equality. The
conservative feels that, treating citizens as equals, as the liberals see equality, would amount to
treating the citizens in fact as unequal. The most efficient means of helping the least well off in fact is
the free market, and not the government s redistribution of wealth.
But then what does it mean for the government to treat its citizens as equals? The first supposes that
government must be neutral on what might be called the good life, and the second one supposes that
government cannot treat its citizens as equal human beings without a theory of what human beings out
to be. The first theory states that because every citizen has a different

Take a flour tortilla (I use Mission brand burrito size flour tortillas) and smear about a tablespoon full
of the warm refried beans on it in a circular patter covering the middle of the tortilla. Then, add about
a tablespoon of the browned hamburger to the top of the beans. Add a tablespoon of the cream sauce.
Next, sprinkle some grated cheese on it. I like to go the easy route and buy my cheese already grated. I

cheese based on your preference. You will also need a sprinkle of the green onions and the diced
tomatoes. While adding the sauce, cheese, onions, and tomatoes, keep in mind that you need to save
some on the side for a topping, so sparingly use these items. Then, roll the tortillas and place them in

Movie Theater Experience
Experiencing Film in Theaters Watching movies is probably one of my favorite activities, it does not
matter if the movie good or bad; I just want to watch them. I loved going to the theaters as a kid
because the entire experience was always so exciting, especially since it was the first thing my mother
let me do out on my own. Going to the movies had always been a blessing but as I have grown I have
made an effort to go less often. While the experience is still the same I just notice just how bad the
overall experience can be as well.
Honestly, the best part of watching a movie in theaters is the movie theater experience; for example
the seats, the popcorn, the large screen, the sound system, the people, and the new releases. It is not
just you in your room watching a movie, it is you reacting to the film and to the people around you
around you as well, all the while getting all these over the top elements as well. Movie going takes a
common experience and amplifies it so it feels like you re getting something even greater.
Plus, my favorite part for any film has always been the trailers; the exciting bits and pieces of coming
films thrown together to entice future visits. With fast paced action and cliffhanging details that are
thrown in the 2 3 minute time frame, I am left wanting to come back and see that movie when it
comes out. It is how they reel me in and keep me coming back in regular intervals. I have also gotten

particularly in the context of politics and other issues, normally known to use animals. An allegory is
defined as a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a

During this time of industrialization, many moved from their rural homes into the city for work, but it
started to become very overpopulated and there was a great deal of poverty. As Charles Dickens grew
up, he was of this poor community where his father had been thrown into debtor s prison, so he knew
of this group of people well and eventually wrote A Christmas Carol about it. Throughout this book,
Dickens shows many forms of allegories by comparing Scrooge to the wealthy class during the 1800s
and even using children to show the poor. In the quote, If they would rather die, said Scrooge, they
had better do it, and decrease the surplus population (Dickens 38 39), Scrooge is depicted as the
regular wealthy class and how they didn t like the impoverish streets around them and wanted them all
gone. Based off of this, it is clearly shown that Charles Dickens was using allegory to compare
Scrooge to the wealth of England. Throughout the beginning of the book, Scrooge is shown as an
affluent, old man who cares none for the poor and keeps his money to himself. As the novella moves
forwards to the Ghost of Christmas Present, both ignorance and want are brought into play. Dickens
writes, They are Man s, said the Spirit, looking down upon them. And they cling to me, appealing
from their fathers. This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree,
but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be
erased (Dickens 107 108). This quote describes allegorically how man has made both ignorance and
want. The Ghost of Christmas Present warns Scrooge to change his ways or watch out certainly for
Ignorance for if he doesn t, death is soon upon him. Each of the ghosts also specifically represents
allegories: the Ghost of Christmas

think. What more goes into a lyric then? (MAYBE) The approach this source is taking is showing the
ways a sonnet represents and doesn t represent a lyric. How exactly are they different and the same?
Sonnets are a lyric because of the emotional base put into them. It mentions that in the Romantic
peiord, sonnets were not blank verse and strayed from the conventional form. They used everyday
language. That brings up the question as to how did that incorporate into Keats sonnets? This source
also begs the question, which I agree with, who determines when something is a lyric or a sonnet?
(28) The lyric was something that could be private or social. What made a sonnet more intimate
between reader and poet (though many sonnets were published in newspapers, especially during the
Romantic period.) The length can prove to be a problem for sonnets is an issue that this source

The Organization On The Industrial Landscape Of India
CHAPTER 1 : ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
1. ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
The advent of JK organization on the industrial landscape of India almost synchronizes with the
beginning of an era of industrial awareness an endeavor for self reliance and the setting up of a
dynamic Indian industry. This was way back in the middle of the 19th century, and the rest that
followed is history. Excellence comes not from mere words or procedures. It comes from an urge to
strive and deliver the best. A mindset that says, when it is good enough, improve it. It is a way of
thinking that comes only from a power within.
Jk tyre is an Automotive Tyre, Tubes and Flaps manufacturing company based in Delhi, India. The
name JK is derived from the initials of Kamlapatji (1884 1937) and his father Seth Juggilal (1857

The Pursuit Of Happiness Is The Universal Search For A Life
The pursuit of happiness is the universal search for a life an individual can feel content and satisfied
with. However, as stated in class, happiness is a fleeting emotion rather than a prolonged state. Once
an individual achieves a sense of happiness it is only a matter of time before they return to the starting
point of their quest. Therefore, happiness alone is not enough to elicit a good life. On a similar note, in
2004, Professor Martin Seligman gave a TED talk that addressed the current direction of psychology.
He believed the extent of psychology had become the ability to make miserable people feel less
miserable rather than [making] relatively untroubled people happier. As a result, he and his colleagues
developed positive psychology, a branch of psychology that promotes the components of happiness,
well being, and fulfillment to achieve a satisfactory life. The purpose of this project is to learn about
your well being and discover ways to increase the quality of your life through positive psychology.
For the first section of this project, I performed a self assessment of my well being using Seligman s
five pillars of positive psychology: Positive emotion, engagement, meaning, relationships, and
accomplishment (Grison, Heatherton, Gazzaniga, 2015). I identified the characteristics of each pillar
and compared them to similar criteria in my life. This process provided me with an in depth
understanding of my life in relation to the model. Following the

Roman Empire Influence On Society
The Roman Empire s Rise Its Influence on Society
The Roman Empire was the post roman republic period (27BC 476AD (503 years)) of the ancient
roman civilisation, known for its government lead by emperors and its expansive territory; covering
Europe, Africa, and Asia. With approximately 50 90 million inhabitants, it was around 1/5 of the
world s population at the time.
The Rise of the Roman Empire:
The Roman Empire rise set of a chain reaction in which an event caused and the empire to form, and
because of this, many of changes the new Empire brought about affect our lives today. In 52BC, Julius
Caesar started a revolution which cause the fall of Republican Rome, and the rise of the Roman
Empire. This caused changes to laws and politics, architecture, and caused new inventions, colonies,
and roads to be formed, gave us religions, and gave us the languages and alphabets that have been
developed into something we use in our everyday lives.
Law and Politics:
Although roman law is not used today, many jurisdictions are based on principles and structures of
law that were used and developed in the time of the Roman Empire.
The Roman Empire ruled in the form of an Emperor, and a senate. The senate consisted of many
senators and two consuls, who along with the emperor had positions of higher power than the other
senators in the meetings. The senate had the power to regulate festivals and religious cults, grant
special honours, excuse an individual of legal liability, manage

The Impossibility Of Being Certain In Hamlet
In William Shakespeare s tragedy, Hamlet, there is the overall theme of the impossibility of being
certain. As Hamlet progresses, the main character, Hamlet, struggles with deciding whether or not to
enact his revenge plan upon his murderous uncle, Claudius, and, consequently, driven mad in the
process. Moreover, he fears what his decision will bring to him in the future, thus waiting until he s
certain to bring about the tragic end. And, it s mostly through the motif of unnaturalness, chaos, and
war does this theme of never being certain or fear of being certain develops. For example, the
unnaturalness of Hamlet s father s ghost issues one of the main uncertainties of the decision of
whether it s actually Hamlet s father or an evil entity. Although the ... Show more content on

The combination of imagery and a dreary tone creates the uneasy picture of Hamlet s state of mind
and how he s unable to come upon a conclusion. As well as how it s almost impossible to come upon a
certainty for only Hamlet knows the ghost s former self and is one of a small handful of characters that
can see it. Moreover, if it s a demon, Hamlet wouldn t know and would only have its words to
interpret since his father died. Overall, the contribution of the unnatural ghost presses the theme of the
impossibility of being certain. Nevertheless, there are other aspects of the motif, such as chaos and
war, that contributes and benefits the theme just as much. For example, how the overall conflict is how
Hamlet can t come to a certain decision about killing

Youth Works Response to Alcohol Consumption among Young...
Current responses
For the purposes of this research chapter I shall be exploring youth works response to the issue of
alcohol consumption among young people today. According to the Youth Work Act 2001;
Youth work means a planned programme of education designed for the purpose of aiding and
enhancing the personal and social development of young persons through their voluntary participation,
and which is
(a) Complementary to their formal, academic or vocational education and training; and
(b) Provided primarily by voluntary youth work organisations.
Youth workers achieve this by creating circumstances which enable young people to feel comfortable
with themselves, make and sustain personal relationships, reach their potential and find their place in
society. Due to the nature of their work, youth workers form close relationships with the young people
they engage with. These relationships are central to the youth work process. It is essentially a
partnership, which allows the young people space to express themselves and provides an opportunity
for learning which they may otherwise ignore. By utilising this relationship youth workers can offer
essential support to the young people during the crucial stages of their development by befriending
them, listening to them and advocating on their behalf. The importance of this relationship does not
change when working with young people around issues such as alcohol. In fact, in many ways it
actually benefits the facilitation of the

The Statute Of Frauds Act
Statute of Frauds Analysis
The Statute of Frauds acts as a sort of life insurance for permanent or relatively long term agreements.
The portion of the Statute examined herein deals solely with transfers of real property other than a
lease of less than one year s duration and the argument is made that the Statute should be extended to
include leases less than one year s duration despite the additional required time, effort and cost. Issues
of trespassing, neglect, adverse possession and disputed arguments of sale are identified and the
effects of the notions are analyzed though the lens of the Statute s expectations and requirements for
viability. The effects of this specific portion of the Statute of Frauds will be examined in regards ...

The levels of severity attributed to these processes would be variant based on the use of the property,
the duration and severity of neglect and the reason for the neglect. It does not seem reasonable that the
owner of a property would allow their asset to fall to such a state as described above, and in the
absence of the Statute of Frauds, this neglect may occur with increased regularity, accidentally. If there
were to be an unspoken dispute over who owns the land, a dispute where in the parties associated were
not aware of a dispute (sincere verbal transfer of real property received insincerely, or vice versa), the
property may fall to neglected because each party believe it was the responsibility of the other party to
maintain. Similarly, if a property were to exist without a building or structure, but simply became
overgrown so that massive landscaping or renovation would be required to make the property
workable or buildable again because of an unnoticed property dispute, the owner of a property would
suffer if he ever decided to renovate the property to its optimal condition or sale or use. The Statute of
Frauds For transfers of real property other than a lease of less than one year s duration protects the
earth from abuse, and though instances may be uncommon, it helps better preserve her for the use and
enjoyment of future generations.

The Determinants Of Potential Of Susceptibility Essay
Developed determinants of susceptibility are just as dangerous, if not more, as innate determinants of
susceptibility. When groups with preexisting respiratory diseases including chronic obstructive
pulmonary disorder or asthma inhale fine particulate matter, it irritates and inflames the lungs and
airways ( Air pollution and asthma , 2015). This makes deep breathing difficult and forces the lungs
and associated breathing muscles to work harder and faster in order to provide the body and its tissues
with adequate amounts of oxygen to function normally. When groups with preexisting cardiovascular
diseases including hypertension, heart failure, coronary heart disease, or stroke inhale fine particulate
matter, it inflames the heart, arteries, and other vessels ( Air Pollution and Heart Disease, 2016). This
significantly increases the risk of stroke, arrhythmias, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and heart failure.
PM2.5 also plays a role in causing plaques in vessels to rupture which can trigger a heart attack. Since
the heart has inefficient functioning due to the increased demand and workload that air pollution
presents to it, it must pump harder and faster in order to provide the body and its tissues with adequate
perfusion of blood to function normally. According to Rajagopalan (2012), diabetic patients have
previously been shown to be more susceptible to air pollution induced cardiovascular morbidity and
mortality because fine particulate matter decreases vascular

  • 2. Western Film Research Paper Western Essay Alannah Jones When you think about film genre, you may ask yourself questions such as, how has it evolved over time? Why has it evolved over time? How has it shaped popular culture? Film, regardless of the genre, consists of elements, in which makes it a film. In a western genre, you may look for elements such as costumes, effects/editing, and narrative. What about these elements makes them important in a Western film? In the film industry, costumes are an important element. Not only do the costumes support the genre, but they also conduct character s representation. In the film The Magnificent 7 , Yul Brynner, the man who creates the magnificent seven, is dressed in all black. Whereas, every other character is either in white ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the first film, which I mentioned above, special effects and editing had not been strongly developed quite yet. You notice this during some points in the film. Including, whenever a character was shot, there was no immediate effect. Typically the character would grasp their chest, around the heart area, and fall forward onto the ground, revealing the blood and injury from the bullet on their back. Whereas in the second film, after Butch and Sundance were shot, there was immediate effect. They both sat down in hiding, felt their injury and when they lifted their hands, they were covered in blood. In the third film, when a man was shot, he was taken back to a small town, and a veterinarian attempted at taking the bullet out of his chest, you could clearly see the injury and the damage it had caused this man. Editing and effects have evolved drastically. These days in films, once someone hits the ground, whether it be from a gunshot, or some other type of hit, you instantly see blood. Either pooling beside their heads or by their sides, or their hands dripping with it. Editing and effects have become so realistic, that it has shaped popular culture to the point of where, the effects can t be any less than what they are. If editing and effects, were to be less, they would be criticised and not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of the major choices in the modern era is the Operating System (OS) . Operating systems are the central software component to any computer. The main brands of operating system are; Windows Mac OS, Sun Solaris, UNIX, DOS and Linux. Each brand has its own take on what makes up an operating system. Windows is the most commonly used operating system around the world. The most common advantage about Windows is its simplicity. It is now very easy for an inexperienced person to grasp the concept and use the computer with this operating system on it. Windows newest version is Vista and windows7. Vista has made ... In 1985, IBM requested that Microsoft write a new operating system for their computers called OS/2; Microsoft wrote the operating system, but also continued to sell their own alternative, which proved to be in direct competition with OS/2. My Personal Statement On Being Observed The targeted behavior being observed will be the frequency of verbalizations of the following curses: fuck, shit, damn, bitch, and ass, as well as any variations of them (e.g. asshole). Each instance of cursing will be recorded, as well as what happened both immediately before and after the curse was spoken. My emotional states for both before and after I curse will also be included. Equipment utilized during the observation period included a Memos application on my cell phone, the Sticky Notes application on my laptop, and a data sheet and frequency graph I created in Excel for this purpose. In terms of external influences, it appeared that I cursed a lot when I was around my friends, such as D, S, and M. Alongside that, I believe that I was receiving reinforcement for the target behavior when my peers laughed following my statements. Treatment Design, Implementation, and Evaluation The goal of this modification project is to entirely eliminate my use of cursing. A secondary goal, if the primary one is not met, is to decrease the frequency of cursing to 1 2 times max. I would be utilizing a positive punishment procedure to assist in the elimination of the target behavior. Punishment would be in the form of a rubber band that would be aggressively snapped against my wrist immediately following the occurrence of the target behavior. I asked my peers and family members to snap the band every time they hear me curse. Whenever I was alone, I would be conscientious of my speech, as I was during the baseline observation period, and administer the punishment myself upon each occurrence. In this instance, the pain I feel when the rubber band is snapped against my skin is an unconditioned punisher. Every occurrence of cursing was recorded right away. The treatment period started on March 27th and ended April 9th, for a total of 14 days of treatment. Changes in the frequency of cursing occurred slowly for the first few days. In fact, the amount of cursing had increased to 14 for the first day of treatment. As can be seen on the graph, the first day had the highest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Most of these tales come to us from news about third world countries wrapped in turmoil and chaos amidst lawlessness. Hence, to imagine a pair of twin brothers leading a gang to rule over Eastern London during the 50s 60s era is difficult, to say the least. To say that the Kray Brothers were the foremost perpetrators of organized crime in East London would be an understatement. The twins were individually known as Ronald Ronnie Kray and Reginald Reggie Kray. The twins were born into violence and under the influence of their grandfather, took up boxing. This was a common hobby for young boys in East London. Sibling Rivalry spurred them on and the brothers experienced great success, reportedly not losing a match until the age of 19. But alas, the call of a life of crime was simply too attractive to repel hence off they went, robbing stores, hijacking vehicles and murdering their enemies. In 1942, the brothers had a fight and Reggie had beaten Ronnie almost to death. One aspect of the French welfare system is universal entitlements. One universal entitlement under the French welfare system is health insurance. One example of social insurance is unemployment insurance. If one loses their job, the person receives 35% of the income that he or she received while employed. For those that are unable to work due to age or disabilities, the government has an assistance program in place. The French also have a pension system that is similar to Social Security in the United States. The system is a pay as you go one. Both the employer and employee give to this pension fund. Once the individual is old enough, he or she will receive this retirement money (Wingert). One more feature the French welfare state is tax expenditure programs. An example of a tax expenditure that is found in France is a tax benefit for married couples. There are many more established tax expenditures; one of which is for those with children. In fact, there are so many tax expenditures that France spends over 0.5% of its gross domestic product on tax breaks just towards the family. • 7. Persuasive Essay On Becoming A Knight A knight is a man who served his sovereign or lord as a mounted soldier in armor. They were well trained fighters, knights were military retainers, often of humble means, but defined by their military vocation and their ability rather than any lineages ( Richard). They surfaced in the Middle Ages because it was a time when Lords needed protections along with their territories. To become a knight was not easy there were many steps towards fulfilling knighthood. Not only did it take years of training to become a knight, but it also took bravery, courtesy, and honor known as chivalry and courtly love. A man without those qualities did not have what it takes to play this role. Knights of the Middle Ages were first and premier warriors who fought from horseback, wore body covering armor, and used weapons such as swords and daggers to fight and protect in battle. There were five steps to knighthood, becoming a knight took years of training, during which a young man learned how to fight, ride, and behave in proper, knightley manner (Corrick 29). The first step to becoming a knight was having the right connections because it was very expensive to buy all the equipment necessary in protecting himself on the battlefield. That being said a knight usually came from a noble or wealthy family. The upbringing is the second step, if a boy came from the right family and had the ambition to be a knight by the age of seven he would have to learn all basic manners and what the role of a ... • 8. Philospher Mill s Greatest Happiness Principle Philospher Mill, believes that the moral law or golden rule is utilitarianism. He uses the greatest happiness principle, and states that everyone wants to and ought to be happy. So, what is each person s pleasure? If one has things that bring them pleasure, then there must be things that also bring them pain. Both elements must be considered when making a decision, otherwise those involved will not be able to achieve the greatest happiness. Furthermore, there will be consequences of these pleasures and pains. The consequences will affect more than just me or them, they will affect all interests surrounding the situation. But, who are the interests and should they all be weighed upon the same? Do interests, have interests apart from my own? According to Mill, all interests must be treated the same and in order to do so we have to look at situations from an outside perspective. In doing this, it allows for us to provide the greatest good for the greatest number of people, again satisfying the greatest happiness principle. For example, let us use the train tracks. Codenamed Operations Plan (OPLAN) 34A, the activities were conceived and overseen by the Department of Defense, with the support of the Central Intelligence Agency, and carried out by the South Vietnamese Navy. Initial successes, however, were limited; numerous South Vietnamese raiders were captured, and OPLAN 34A units suffered heavy casualties. In July 1964, Lieutenant General William C. Westmoreland, commander of the U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, shifted the operation s tactics from commando attacks on land to shore bombardments using mortars, rockets, and recoilless rifles fired from South Vietnamese patrol boats. It is also notable that McNamara in this conversation clearly favors explaining to Congress the link between the incident and the OPLAN 34A activities. The naval battle between the destroyer USS Maddox and several North Vietnamese torpedo boats occurred in the immediate aftermath of a series of 34 A maritime raids on North Vietnamese coastal targets. After observing North Vietnamese patrol torpedo boats pursuing the vessels that had attacked Hon Me, the Maddox withdrew from the area. Nevertheless, when later queried by NSA headquarters, the destroyer indicated she had been unaware of the OPLAN raid on the island. • 10. The New Science of Pseudoscience Nineteenth century America was a tumultuous place, marred by war and suffering the growing pains of both westward expansion and industrialization. The intellectual world was equally turbulent, as a great battle of ideas challenged the foundation and morality of the institution of slavery. Pro slavery advocates had to find new ways of justifying their beliefs in order to provide a different perspective from which to view slavery, other than an economic standpoint. Southern society began to idealize science as an indisputable vehicle of objective truth. The rapid advancement of scientific knowledge lent scientists a halo, as they could claim neutrality and objectiveness. A scientist s word was law and deemed worthy of imitation. Because of the belief that scientists were unbiased and impartial when conducting research, scientists in the South attempted to legitimize pro slavery arguments by providing pseudoscientific evidence proving the superiority of whites and the inability of blacks to be self sufficient as freedmen. Dr. Samuel George Morton, a famous physician and researcher in natural history, provided the South with flawed anthropological evidence in order to bolster the anti abolitionist case. His universal acclaim for devotion to objective data allowed for his research to become popular and widespread throughout the United States, especially the South. Review on the Novel Atonement Review on Atonement It is not often that the protagonist of a story be the anathema of the story as well and it is even more of a rarity that the particular character be a young child. Yet, this is exactly what Ian McEwan has done with his Crime Novel, Atonement. McEwan intentionally turns his readers against Briony Tallis, a young girl transitioning from the naivete of childhood into the new and confusing years of adolescence; a point in one s life when mistakes are dubbed as necessary stepping stones to further understand one s self rather than life long regrets and unsubduable self loathing. Robbie Turner is trying to survive each turbulent day in war with thoughts of Cecilia as motivation. McEwan describes World War Two brilliantly by creating scenes of unthinkable death and suffering whilst threading hope and love to convey the complexities of war. It s during these pages that the reader realizes the full consequence of Briony s actions. Briony herself, witnessing the horror and carnage of war in the hospital, is distraught as ever about the incident. She has stopped writing thus imprisoning the same imagination that destroyed so many relationships. Cecilia defended Robbie against her family, and in doing so cut them off entirely, the foremost being Briony. This only intensifies the readers distaste for Briony and the effect she let herself make. Her internal conflict evolves for the worse with time, and even with the sacrifices she makes, it is clear atonement is far off in the distance from herself, her family, Robbie, or the reader.McEwan takes what is ethical and distorts it using the relationships between the characters. He uses some of the most sensitive relationships, such as sisters and lovers, to evoke questions in the reader: what mistake could lead to a loss of family? Of love? Family is often a symbol of eternal love, but in Atonement, that symbol is shattered. The bonds of family love cannot always be healed with apologies. • 14. Aerobic Respiration And Aerobic Respiration Aerobic respiration, also known as cellular respiration, is an essential process for the production of ATP and occurs in 3 metabolic stages. The stages included are glycolysis, the Kreb s cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation. Throughout the whole process, glucose or various other saccharides are broken down, producing CO2, ATP, NADH, Pyruvate, and FADH2. Aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration are very similar, the only difference is the final electron acceptor, as Aerobic respiration involves oxygen. In order to study and detect how much cellular respiration occurs in an organism, the amount of glucose used, the amount of oxygen consumed, or the amount of CO2 given off can be measured. Bread, wine, and beer are all made from yeast. Yeast must go through cellular respiration and produce CO2 in order for the bread to rise and form properly; however, different monosaccharides may affect the level of CO2, measured in mL, given off by Saccharomyces cerevisiae (found in yeast), while affecting yeast s ability to metabolize during glycolysis. Durham tubes (a sealed, cut off 5 mL, pipette) can be used to measure the amount of CO2 produced as the yeast metabolizes. The approached used was to test the level of CO2 (mL) production, after different solutions with 1.5 mL of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and 4.5 mL and either 1M of glucose, fructose, or galactose go through cellular respiration. The higher level of CO2 produced indicates the more cellular respiration that took place. A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Conflict is a part of everyday life, as long as we have existed conflict has also. Rahim (2010) defines conflict as an interactive process manifested in incompatibility, disagreement or dissonance within or between social entities. However, he expands upon the definition stating debating as to whether the conflict is caused by the situation or the individuals type of behaviour. This contests the issue of whether conflict is caused by a particular situation that the employee has experienced or if whether the behaviourism of the employee is to blame. If organisational conflict is not resolved, several negative consequences can occur including increased stress among employees, reduced creative collaboration and team problem solving, disruption to work flow, decreased customer satisfaction, distrust, split camps, and create gossip amongst the workplace. (Moriarty, 2007). However, in contrast some academics dispute this, even going as far as suggesting that minor conflicts can be helpful, and by having the capabilities to deal with conflict ... Consequently, as everyone is working towards the same goal a conflict of interests is unlikely to occur, resulting in harmony amongst the entire workforce. (Leah, 2001). • 25. What Does The Dream Of The Rood Mean The Dream of the Rood is a work which inspires one to think, to contemplate, and to begin to better understand one s own faith. The Rood tells us of its life, from being a tree to being the instrument in Christ s death to its visions after Christ s death, burial, and resurrection. I felt the Rood s agony as it became an unwilling participant in the death of the Lord. The purpose of this poem is to bring the glory back to God, reflecting on his goodness and his purposes in the earth. The dreamer, who heard and recounted the Rood s story, ends with hope in Christ and a hope in the future of everlasting life in heaven. The Rood communicates to the dreamer that God recognizes this type of faith. For its tremendous self discipline and submission to the Lord s will, the Rood gains a rich reward. Just as Christ s obedience to his Father was recognized by God, the Rood s faithfulness is also acknowledged. He stresses the notion that the gift of salvation is so great that it transcends human understanding. The gift of redemption, which assures man pardon of his sins and never ending happiness in the presence of his creator, is so immense that it cannot be fully understood in human terms. On the basis of cultural and ethical concepts valid in this life, man may be able to comprehend part of the mystery of Christ s self sacrifice, but not the fullness of God s grace. By examining Rawl s philosophy, I will agree with his original position, veil of ignorance, and justice as fairness which contains his view of human nature. Then, I will compare and contrase John Lockes differing views of human nature to Rawl s position of human nature and defend possible assertions towards Rawls position. Rawls view of human nature assumes everyone makes decisions based on self interest alone, while making a rational account to the available information around, such as the probability of events and the cost and benefits of those actions based on those events. An example would be skipping a lecture. You would decide if the extra sleep is worth the missed material. In answer to fix our self interest, John Rawls had introduced the concept of Justice as Fairness, which focuses that everyone has the right to both liberty and equality. His libertarian principles focus on quality in the assignment of basic rights and duties while his equalitarian principles focus on wealth and authority ... only if they result in compensating benefits for everyone (Rawls 12). His views of equality are based on everyone s ability to cooperate, with the advantages of equality attracting everyone, even the less situated. (Rawls 13). The liberal, in economic policies, demands that the inequalities of wealth be reduced through social programs such as welfare and other redistribution financed by a progressive tax. Liberals sense of equality will fall more into the latter idea of equality. The conservative feels that, treating citizens as equals, as the liberals see equality, would amount to treating the citizens in fact as unequal. The most efficient means of helping the least well off in fact is the free market, and not the government s redistribution of wealth. Going to the movies had always been a blessing but as I have grown I have made an effort to go less often. While the experience is still the same I just notice just how bad the overall experience can be as well. Honestly, the best part of watching a movie in theaters is the movie theater experience; for example the seats, the popcorn, the large screen, the sound system, the people, and the new releases. It is not just you in your room watching a movie, it is you reacting to the film and to the people around you around you as well, all the while getting all these over the top elements as well. Movie going takes a common experience and amplifies it so it feels like you re getting something even greater. Plus, my favorite part for any film has always been the trailers; the exciting bits and pieces of coming films thrown together to entice future visits. With fast paced action and cliffhanging details that are thrown in the 2 3 minute time frame, I am left wanting to come back and see that movie when it comes out. It is how they reel me in and keep me coming back in regular intervals. I have also gotten really into staying for the credits as well ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Comparison Of Satire In A Christmas Carol By Jonathan... George Orwell, Jonathan Swift and Charles Dickens all incorporate allegories into their writings to effect their reader s opinions. The three men compose their writings using different forms of satire and allegories. Satire is described as the use of humor or irony to expose and criticize people s vices, particularly in the context of politics and other issues, normally known to use animals. An allegory is defined as a story, poem, or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one. George Orwell, Jonathan Swift and Charles Dickens provide forms of allegories and satire throughout their writings in order to create an impact on their readers about the political and economic problems of their respective ... During this time of industrialization, many moved from their rural homes into the city for work, but it started to become very overpopulated and there was a great deal of poverty. As Charles Dickens grew up, he was of this poor community where his father had been thrown into debtor s prison, so he knew of this group of people well and eventually wrote A Christmas Carol about it. Throughout this book, Dickens shows many forms of allegories by comparing Scrooge to the wealthy class during the 1800s and even using children to show the poor. In the quote, If they would rather die, said Scrooge, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population (Dickens 38 39), Scrooge is depicted as the regular wealthy class and how they didn t like the impoverish streets around them and wanted them all gone. Based off of this, it is clearly shown that Charles Dickens was using allegory to compare Scrooge to the wealth of England. Throughout the beginning of the book, Scrooge is shown as an affluent, old man who cares none for the poor and keeps his money to himself. As the novella moves forwards to the Ghost of Christmas Present, both ignorance and want are brought into play. Dickens writes, They are Man s, said the Spirit, looking down upon them. And they cling to me, appealing from their fathers. This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased (Dickens 107 108). This quote describes allegorically how man has made both ignorance and want. The Ghost of Christmas Present warns Scrooge to change his ways or watch out certainly for Ignorance for if he doesn t, death is soon upon him. Each of the ghosts also specifically represents allegories: the Ghost of Christmas ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. How Loss And Death Affect The Lyric And Sonnet This source discussed the sonnet and lyric (the basis of my project.) It states that a lyric is the genre of internal and individualized emotions. It s seen as a moment of personal experience. (33) The traditional emotion that is associated with the sonnet is love. Both the lyric and the sonnet are connected with song and music. I want to go more in depth on how loss and death can affect the lyric and sonnet as well, without going into elegy land. This source was very informative on the basics of a sonnet and a lyric such as how the sonnet has a twist and the lyric is more problematic than one would think. What more goes into a lyric then? (MAYBE) The approach this source is taking is showing the ways a sonnet represents and doesn t represent a lyric. How exactly are they different and the same? Sonnets are a lyric because of the emotional base put into them. It mentions that in the Romantic peiord, sonnets were not blank verse and strayed from the conventional form. They used everyday language. That brings up the question as to how did that incorporate into Keats sonnets? This source also begs the question, which I agree with, who determines when something is a lyric or a sonnet? (28) The lyric was something that could be private or social. What made a sonnet more intimate between reader and poet (though many sonnets were published in newspapers, especially during the Romantic period.) The length can prove to be a problem for sonnets is an issue that this source ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. The Pursuit Of Happiness Is The Universal Search For A Life The pursuit of happiness is the universal search for a life an individual can feel content and satisfied with. However, as stated in class, happiness is a fleeting emotion rather than a prolonged state. Once an individual achieves a sense of happiness it is only a matter of time before they return to the starting point of their quest. Therefore, happiness alone is not enough to elicit a good life. On a similar note, in 2004, Professor Martin Seligman gave a TED talk that addressed the current direction of psychology. He believed the extent of psychology had become the ability to make miserable people feel less miserable rather than [making] relatively untroubled people happier. As a result, he and his colleagues developed positive psychology, a branch of psychology that promotes the components of happiness, well being, and fulfillment to achieve a satisfactory life. The purpose of this project is to learn about your well being and discover ways to increase the quality of your life through positive psychology. For the first section of this project, I performed a self assessment of my well being using Seligman s five pillars of positive psychology: Positive emotion, engagement, meaning, relationships, and accomplishment (Grison, Heatherton, Gazzaniga, 2015). I identified the characteristics of each pillar and compared them to similar criteria in my life. This process provided me with an in depth understanding of my life in relation to the model. • 44. The Impossibility Of Being Certain In Hamlet In William Shakespeare s tragedy, Hamlet, there is the overall theme of the impossibility of being certain. As Hamlet progresses, the main character, Hamlet, struggles with deciding whether or not to enact his revenge plan upon his murderous uncle, Claudius, and, consequently, driven mad in the process. Moreover, he fears what his decision will bring to him in the future, thus waiting until he s certain to bring about the tragic end. And, it s mostly through the motif of unnaturalness, chaos, and war does this theme of never being certain or fear of being certain develops. For example, the unnaturalness of Hamlet s father s ghost issues one of the main uncertainties of the decision of whether it s actually Hamlet s father or an evil entity. Although the ... Moreover, if it s a demon, Hamlet wouldn t know and would only have its words to interpret since his father died. Overall, the contribution of the unnatural ghost presses the theme of the impossibility of being certain. • 45. Youth Works Response to Alcohol Consumption among Young... Current responses For the purposes of this research chapter I shall be exploring youth works response to the issue of alcohol consumption among young people today. According to the Youth Work Act 2001; Youth work means a planned programme of education designed for the purpose of aiding and enhancing the personal and social development of young persons through their voluntary participation, and which is (a) Complementary to their formal, academic or vocational education and training; and (b) Provided primarily by voluntary youth work organisations. Youth workers achieve this by creating circumstances which enable young people to feel comfortable with themselves, make and sustain personal relationships, reach their potential and find their place in society. Due to the nature of their work, youth workers form close relationships with the young people they engage with. These relationships are central to the youth work process. It is essentially a partnership, which allows the young people space to express themselves and provides an opportunity for learning which they may otherwise ignore. By utilising this relationship youth workers can offer essential support to the young people during the crucial stages of their development by befriending them, listening to them and advocating on their behalf. The importance of this relationship does not change when working with young people around issues such as alcohol. In fact, in many ways it actually benefits the facilitation of the ... The portion of the Statute examined herein deals solely with transfers of real property other than a lease of less than one year s duration and the argument is made that the Statute should be extended to include leases less than one year s duration despite the additional required time, effort and cost. Issues of trespassing, neglect, adverse possession and disputed arguments of sale are identified and the effects of the notions are analyzed though the lens of the Statute s expectations and requirements for viability. The levels of severity attributed to these processes would be variant based on the use of the property, the duration and severity of neglect and the reason for the neglect. It does not seem reasonable that the owner of a property would allow their asset to fall to such a state as described above, and in the absence of the Statute of Frauds, this neglect may occur with increased regularity, accidentally. If there were to be an unspoken dispute over who owns the land, a dispute where in the parties associated were not aware of a dispute (sincere verbal transfer of real property received insincerely, or vice versa), the property may fall to neglected because each party believe it was the responsibility of the other party to maintain. Similarly, if a property were to exist without a building or structure, but simply became overgrown so that massive landscaping or renovation would be required to make the property workable or buildable again because of an unnoticed property dispute, the owner of a property would suffer if he ever decided to renovate the property to its optimal condition or sale or use. The Statute of Frauds For transfers of real property other than a lease of less than one year s duration protects the earth from abuse, and though instances may be uncommon, it helps better preserve her for the use and enjoyment of future generations. ... • 48. The Determinants Of Potential Of Susceptibility Essay Developed determinants of susceptibility are just as dangerous, if not more, as innate determinants of susceptibility. When groups with preexisting respiratory diseases including chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder or asthma inhale fine particulate matter, it irritates and inflames the lungs and airways ( Air pollution and asthma , 2015). This makes deep breathing difficult and forces the lungs and associated breathing muscles to work harder and faster in order to provide the body and its tissues with adequate amounts of oxygen to function normally. When groups with preexisting cardiovascular diseases including hypertension, heart failure, coronary heart disease, or stroke inhale fine particulate matter, it inflames the heart, arteries, and other vessels ( Air Pollution and Heart Disease, 2016). This significantly increases the risk of stroke, arrhythmias, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and heart failure. PM2.5 also plays a role in causing plaques in vessels to rupture which can trigger a heart attack. Since the heart has inefficient functioning due to the increased demand and workload that air pollution presents to it, it must pump harder and faster in order to provide the body and its tissues with adequate perfusion of blood to function normally. According to Rajagopalan (2012), diabetic patients have previously been shown to be more susceptible to air pollution induced cardiovascular morbidity and mortality because fine particulate matter decreases vascular ...
