The energy content of food and the expenditure of energy by the body are measured in units called
Calories. Define the term calorie with a small c , and relate this term to large C Calories also
known as Food Calories or kilocalories. State how many Calories are contained in each pound of
stored body fat. Calorie with a small c is defined as the amount of energy (or heat) required in order
to increase the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius. Calorie with a big C is the
amount of heat or energy required in order to increase the temperature of 1000 grams of water by 1
degree Celsius. So, 1 Calorie is 1000 calories. Calories (big C ) are used to measure the calories

The Apostle Of The Deaf Essay
Louis Laurent Marie Clerc or commonly known as the Apostle of the Deaf in America , was born
December 26, 1785 in La Balme les Grottes, France. Mr. Clerc was born in a village in the south
eastern side of France; he came from a well off middle class family that would have been
considered bourgeois for his time. His father was Joseph Francis Clerc a civil attorney for the royal
family and his mother was Marie Elizabeth Candy whose father was a notary public. Her father as
well as being an attorney also served as major of their Balme les Grottes village from 1780 to
1814[1]. Laurent Clercwas born with the ability to hear, but around the age of one, Laurent was
left unattended for a few moments and manage to climb on top of a chair and fall onto the
kitchen fireplace, badly injuring the right side of this face. After this incident Clerc developed a
fever and lost his hearing and sense of smell [2]. He developed a scar underneath his right ear, this
interestingly enough helped create his name sign according to author Loida Canlas, His name sign
derives from the scar that remained the middle and index fingers brushed downward across the
right cheek near the mouth (Canlas) [1] ; it is believed that Laurent Clerc name sign is one of the
most iconic and recognizable name sign in American deaf culture. It is speculated and was argued
by Clerc himself, that he might have been born deaf, but that it was only discovered after the
accident and attributed to it [1]. When Clerc

Differences Between Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and...
At the mention of the name Alice, one tends to usually think of the children s stories by Lewis
Carroll. Namely, Alice s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass are two
classic works of children s literature that for over a century have been read by children and adults
alike. These two stories tell the tale of a young girl named Alice who finds herself in peculiar
surroundings, where she encountersmany different and unusual characters. Although Alice is at the
centre of both stories, each tale is uniquely different in its purpose, characters and style.
Carroll first published Alice s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, three years after he had first told
the story to the young girl Alice Liddell and her sisters, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both of these stories are structured differently in the manner in which Carroll had written them.
For Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, there is no direction to the story and one could almost
place the chapters in any sequence and the story would still make sense. However, the opposite
is true for Through the Looking Glass as Carroll clearly indicated at the beginning with the
introduction of the chess game. This image of a chess board is fundamental to understanding the
story in Through the Looking Glass and portrays a sense of logic and order to the reader.
Throughout the story, the reader has a clear sense of direction as to where the story will go next
and each chapter follows in sequence. Alice s journey in the second story is to go from being a
pawn to that of a Queen.
Carroll s use of the chess board is also important in Alice s transition to adulthood. Her journey
across the chess board from being a pawn to reaching the status of Queen represents the growth of
being a child to becoming an adult. This emphasis is conveyed primarily in Through the Looking
Glass and Carroll conveys this through the encounters that Alice has with the various characters,
mainly the Queens and the Kings. The Queen always seems one step ahead of Alice, similar to
what a child feels in an adult world. Carroll continues to express the tyranny of adulthood through
Alice s encounters and journey. She soon learns that becoming a Queen was not all

How Socio Demographic Factors Influence Income
Summative Report 2
Research Question: How do socio demographic factors influence income in the UK?
Introduction
Socio demographic factors are factors such as age, sex, ethnicity, religion, which affect society and
are present in statistics. These factors have a significant effect on income because a person with a
university degree is able to increase their income as they may look for more specialized jobs in
relevance to their degree thus allowing them to generate higher levels of income in comparison
to somebody who has a lower education level for example GCSE s who would look for jobs in
line with their current qualifications. In order for me to analyse how socio demographic factors
affect income I have chosen to look at 3 independent variables; Education, Gender and Religion to
see the level of statistical significance in relation to income. In terms of a previous literature I have
reviewed different types of literature in order to understand the relationship of these independent
variables to income and have looked at the Theory of human Capital in regards to education by
Becker (2009), theories that discuss the gender pay gap, and also Max Weber s renowned book of
The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism which examines the effect of religiosity in
increasing levels of income amongst Protestants. After exploring this literature I will carry out
Analysis of Variance and Regression; both linear and multiple to see how much of an impact the
variables of Education,

Collage Watson Character Analysis
The most important characteristic for effective governmental leaders today is being genuine. The
typical voter in America receives most of its political information from the media. Many times, the
portrayal of politicians is distorted in a way that exclusively highlights characteristics that puts them
in high pedestals. Our system is conditioned to see government officials as perfect, however, those
who are honest and strive to have a natural connection with their constituents make the most
relatable and effective governmental leaders in our democratic system today.
Leaders must be their own selves when engaging with people because this is how they can
sympathize with their constituents, making themselves seem more real and approachable. In ...

During our class field trip to the Texas Capitol, Senator Kirk Watson mentioned how throughout his
time in governmental affairs, he has learned that it is very hard to please everyone. People tend to
see politicians as perfect individuals, but they are also human. By staying true to himself, and living
by his 84% philosophy, Senator Watson has become one of the most respected and admired leaders
in the Austin area and in the state of Texas. Our governmental leaders today have two main
objectives during their public service years. One of them is to help the communities they
represent to their fullest extent and to the best of their ability. The second one is something
everyone involved in governmental affairs knows but rarely openly admit to is getting re elected.
In order to be effective leaders who can continue serving their communities, government officials
must be able to relate to the public that initially elect them. Hence, the best governmental leaders
are those who not only engage with people both face to face and on new social media platforms,
but who are also willing to listen to their constituents concerns with an open mind and be ready to

Expectancy Violation Theory (Paper Rough Draft)
Expectancy Violation Theory (Paper Rough Draft) Expectancy Violation Theory, or more
commonly referred to as EVT, is the study of attempting to explain one s reactions to unexpected
behavior of their peers, and the various meanings that people attribute to the violation, or
infringement, of their personal space. Judee Burgoon defines personal space as the invisible,
variable volume of space surrounding an individual that defines that individual s preferred distance
from others. I will explain to you the communication phenomenon of EVT, theories, behaviors and
context of EVT, as well as how to apply them. Expectancy Violations theory was created by Judee

Spinal Cord Injury Case Study
Question 1
The spinal cord has 31 spinal nerves that control most of our sensory and motor responses to a
stimulus. When it comes down to injuring the spinal cord, it is a serious matter because it leads
to a severe condition of being paralyzed. Both Paraplegic and Quadriplegic deals with a spinal
cord injury and both injuries lead to limited to no movement or sensory responses within certain
areas of the body.
Paraplegic refers to an injury below the waist. The spinal cord is injured below the neck which
allows motor or sensory impairment below the waist. When the spinal cord is injured below the
neck, the person is not able to move their legs and there is limited feeling. A treatment for this type

School lunch is the time when children eat at school every day when they attend school. Lunch at
school is what ensures that the children are getting at least some kind of nutrients because for
some, it may be the only meal that they are receiving and are able to eat. It is required that the
schools feed the children that attend there. It can be a topic of issue because of the many
complaints about some schools cooking unhealthy foods.
Some pros about school lunches is that they allow the student to receive good nutrients, they are
able to discover new things outside of their home cooked meals, and they are able to learn table
manners. Nutrients is a good thing for children because they are still growing. School lunches
give that to the students because that may be the only time for them to receive it. It also gives
them a chance to explore foods. Some schools change up the menu so that there can be a variety of
choice within the week. School lunches are able to teach children table manners because they are
in a social setting and are able to learn from one another. In addition, there are some cons when it
comes to school lunches also. One is that it may not be what the children want. That issue hinders
the child to not eat. Not eating causing many problems within children. Another reason is that the
menu is not flexible. There is only a limited amount of

Research On Cognitive Affective Processes
Intersubjectivity refers to the shared understanding between individuals (Göncü, 1993). Research
shows cognitive affective processes help to develop intersubjectivity (Tronick Cohn, 1989).
Similarly, in psychotherapeutic relationships, cognitive affective processes are the building blocks
to the therapeutic alliance. A psychotherapeutic alliance constitutes the shared client
psychotherapist relationship marked by mutual respect, caring and shared understanding of
therapeutic goals. If intersubjectivityis nurtured in the client psychotherapist relationship, this can
lead to increased mutual understanding and goal achievement (as defined by the client) in
psychotherapy. In order to show that psychotherapeutic alliances can be fortified by applying
intersubjectivity to psychotherapeutic relationships, this paper is divided into four parts. First the
literature review opens with the origin and definition of intersubjectivity, including sections on
communication, affect, prolepsis and zone of proximal development (ZPD). The second section
will look at applications to psychotherapy. The third section will offer implications to the field and
finally concluding remarks will close with societal shifts that must be made to foster
intersubjectivity in psychotherapy.

Consequences Of The Nanjing Massacre
The Nanjing Massacre to some extent was more atrocious than the bombing of Hiroshima. The
main reasons were: the ongoing physical violence, Japan s war aggression, and lastly, people
tend to forget to forget its history, in comparison to Hiroshima bombings. The Nanjing Massacre
was arguably more atrocious than the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in terms of ongoing
physical violence. The Japanese Imperial Army s invasion in China prolonged the Nanjing
Massacre. Moreover, arguably, it was more atrocious in their case because their own government
and army abandoned them. A survivor named Jiang Genfu had to watch his parents and siblings
get killed by Japanese soldiers, at the age of nine. The Nanjing Massacre was hardly the unifying
event that it has for the Chinese . No one could fathom the overall extent of the terror by looking at
confidential accounts and diaries from Chinese survivors. An estimate of 200,000 Chinese civilians
and war prisoners were massacred in Nanjing during the first six weeks of the Japanese invasion.
Numbers may not mean anything, however, the violence was ongoing. Historians also had to take
into account that not all numbers add up because published textbooks present varied information.
Beijing stated that 300,000 people were massacred. Both sides often questioned the figures. A
professor at Sophia University named Watanabe Shoichi, claimed that 200,000 or 300,000 could
not have been massacred in Nanjing, assuming the size of the Japanese

Grant s Defense Strategies In The Battle Of Cold Harbor
In the battle of Cold Harbor, Grant planned to attack General Robert E. Lee s army to remove
him from the Confederate capital and remove him from the confederate capital. Grant thought
that he could overpower General Lee if he could draw him out of his protective barriers and into
the open space. Grant had tried to do so before, but he had failed. Because he used a strategy of
continuously calling troops to battle, he eventually had to wait until more troops arrived. Due to

United States Based Urban Slavery
Research Question: How was United States based urban slavery different than United States based
rural slavery? In the average American s eyes, there is always assumptions made about slavery and
the nature of slavery. Slavery was something that many people relied on for centuries. It is not
something that can be easily forgotten and the importance of it cannot be understated. Slaverywas
simply the bondage of peoples who were then forced into labor on farms or in the city. Believe it or
not, slavery did exist outside the standard cotton plantationand tobacco farms in the South. Slavery
was all over the southern part of the country whether on a farm or in the ever expanding cities.
Slaves could also be found in small farms and towns.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There were several key differences about each of them and each had their own place within the
American economy. Urban slavery and rural slavery were different from each other in terms of
location, living conditions, and slave agency.
Firstly, location was important if talking about rural and urban slavery. Within the rural slavery
system, there were different sized farms that a slave might belong to. Smaller farms were the
norm in places like Kentucky, and they did not require large amounts of slaves like the cotton
plantations. Within those smaller farms like in Kentucky, slaves were not needed in large
numbers like the Deep South simply because Kentucky grew different crops like corn and hemp
which did not require large numbers of gang laborers. A farmer only needed the amount of
slaves necessary for the job to be done which set artificial limits on farmers for the number of
slaves a farmer would own. A farmer in Kentucky growing hemp is not going to need 300 slaves
to do the job, only 5 or 6, 1 and this smaller sized farm relied on the few slaves it had in order to
survive. The, ...size of most Kentucky farms was a contrary variable to slave efficiency and also
diminished the need for an expanding slave population. In comparison, the expansion of cotton
production in the Lower South created not only changes in the nature of slave employment, but a
seemingly insatiable demand for more slaves. 1 Here in looking at the size of plantations,

The Impact Of Sarbanes Oxley Act On Public Companies And...
The affects of the Sarbanes Oxley Act on Public Companies and the Market
Shareen Sidhu
University of Maryland University College
The Affects of the Sarbanes Oxley Act on Public Companies and the Market The Sarbanes Oxley
Act of 2002 was implemented and designed to protect the interests of the investing public and the
mission is to set and enforce practice standards for a new class of firms registered to audit
publicly held companies (Verschoor, 2012). During the early 2000 s, the world saw an alarming
number of accounting scandals take place resulting in many corporations going bankrupt. Some of
the major companies involved in these scandals were from Enron, WorldCom, and one of the top
five accounting and auditing firms, Arthur Andersen. These companies were dishonest with their
financial statements, assuring the public the company was very successful, when in reality they
were not. This became a problem because if the public believes a company is doing well, they are
more likely to invest in it. That is to say, once these companies were exposed, it caused a number of
companies going bankrupt and a major mistrust between the public and the capital market.
Consequently, the federal government quickly took action and enacted the Sarbanes Oxley act of
2002, also known as SOX, which was created by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board
(PCAOB), and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Many have questioned what
Norman Bowie (2004) had questioned,

the rich railroad man known as Harry Thaw. Thaw and White were already rivals so as a way to

proposed to Evelyn multiple times but was rejected because she had been warned by Stanford,
of Thaw s mental conditions and of his drug abuse. Another factor causing her to neglect his

GREENLIGHT
The project objective was quality monitoring costs reduction while at the same time improving the
quality of the product. The improvements in quality control processes were focused along with
reducing the number of samples. The plan consisted of three distinct elements:
1. Statistical process control would be adapted as processes in control and capable of producing
within specifications would produce more consistent quality.
2. Production operators would be given the process control tools that the process engineering
technicians had been using and in conjunction with sampling would be expected to make
disposition decisions themselves.
3. Quality control auditors would concentrate on training operators and operationalizing
specifications on their new products.
The statistical process control system involving both acceptance sampling and automated process
control was to be implemented. SPC involved testing for productions within a pre specified range.
If the production went beyond the range, the production process had to be shut down maintenance
was to be called to perform maintenance and recalibration. As a part of the process, the operators
were to take six random measurements of a process characteristic during the course of their shift
and then plot the mean measured value.

The National Anthem protests have been a major controversy in today s news and with the public.
The protests have caused violent outbreaks among some groups of people and created many

Police brutality is one of the main reasons these protests are occurring and it continues to happen
everyday. Also, veterans are becoming very offended by the people who do protestour country.
President Trump has also made very many comments about this issue including many about the

Overall, the protests of the national anthem are wrong and disrespectful towards our country and its

riots and people are getting very offended by them. One example is the riots that happened in
Baltimore, Maryland in the spring of 2015. The riotwas caused by the treatment of Freddie Gray

Stereotypes And Stereotypes Of The Black Community
Throughout the history of motion pictures, prejudice directors have used film to control how the
general public views certain demographics of people. In particular, the black community has
historically been viewed in a negative light. Stereotypes were created through literature and film
that still affect African Americans. Directors and writers would create relatable stories and attach
demeaning traits to black peoplethat have qualities in common with Black Americans. This would
force readers and viewers to subconsciously attach these stereotypes black people. Examples of
these stereotypes can be found in Uncle Tom s Cabin and The Birth of a Nation. Derogatory terms

If you are new in taking care of a dog, you have to realize that dogs need enough amount of
exercise. A lot of dog trainer will tell you that a tired dog is really a happy one. You need to make
them pre occupied and a physical activity is not just enough. Mental stimulation is also important
so you need to give them a puppy toy that is meant for their age. You will see that if a doglacks
mental and physical stimulation, they will more likely end up suffering from behaviors like
digging, barking chewing things inside the house. There are ways to make your dog busy
regardless if you will play and share the activity with them or not. There is a wide variety of
puppy toy that you can buy in the market these days. You can also buy your dog with treats
especially when they roll and work around with the puppy toy that you have bought.
You can place the treats within the house if you have plans of living the dog alone. At the start,
let the dog find the treats and where you have placed them. Next time you can just hide the treats
and the puppy toy and let the dog find it as you walk out of the house. This way, the dog will not

that someone is out there and he is not alone. You can also look for toys and lay them on the

The Carassius auratus (goldfish) is an ectotherm and its physiologic functions are influenced by the

A Theology Of Leadership For Christ s Church
Theology is an attempt to explain God and his relationship to our world and humanity, while
leadership is the human endeavor or capacity to lead or guide others through an operation, activity,
task, or even through life. To build a theology of leadership is to build on the interrelation between
these two. In order to develop a true theology of leadership, thoughtful reflection on Biblical
scripture and the leadership of those called by God must be examined. What I assert is that of all
the models that we have examined that Servant Leadership is a theology of leadership for Christ
centered pastoral leadership within Christ s church.
Northouse defines leadership as a process whereby an individual influences a group of
individuals to achieve a common goal. Leadership as it works through those in pastoral
leadership in the church then is a process whereby an individual who has been influenced by the
works of Christ as they have journeyed the path of faith and come to embrace and embody Christ
and the gospel message within their own life then in acceptance of Christ s call upon their life goes
out to influence, invite, and empower others to embrace and embody the gospel in their own lives.
For the not yet established church it was Christ who was the original influencer of a ragtag group
of disciples and followers who came to embrace and embody His gospel message and through
which Christ would build His church. So who better to look to when looking at leadership and

The Theory Of Ladenness s Theory Essay
The theory of ladenness has been debated amongst philosophers for hundreds of years. The theory
of ladenness debates whether one s past experiences affect their perceived inputs or their
interpretation of those inputs. Kuhn strongly believes that one s experiences affect what they
perceive, however Hanson provides strong evidence suggesting that what people perceive as their
surroundings are indistinguishable, but their interpretations differ. While there is evidence to
support both theories, I believe that Hanson better provides evidence by showing the strength of his
theory while correspondingly arguing the flaws in Kuhn s theory. To understand the theory of
ladenness, we need to differentiate between perceptionand interpretation. Perception is the process
where we become aware of our surroundings, while interpretation is the process were our minds
absorb the information and comprehend it using information and experiences we have accumulated.
Despite their differences, these two functions are essentially related. Together they allow us to
become aware and react to our surroundings. We are constantly perceiving and subconsciously
reacting to our surroundings, without any cognization. However, when we are presented with a
problem, we force ourselves to use a deeper level of cognitionto think through the problem. This
mindful use of our cognitive abilities is what interpretation is, the application of our past
experiences to comprehend what he have perceived. Rather than

The Influence Of Food In The United States
The United States of America is a nation built upon immigrants from various parts of the world.

Enterprise is a commercial real estate developer. You recently joined Melon and your position

on a project that has to be completed in about a week.
Pat tells you that Melon is thinking about leasing a parcel of land to build a shopping center.
Melon would own and operate the shopping center and generate revenue by renting space to
retailers. Pat would like you to do some work on the project. Specifically, she would like you to

Bob thought that the parcel of land would be large enough to build a shopping center with as
much as 60,000 square meters of retail space. He also thought that Melon should make a one time
upfront payment to lease the parcel of land for the expected 20 year life of the project.
Bob thought the amount retailers in the shopping center would be willing to pay per square
meter of floor space would be a decreasing function of the total size of the shopping center. Bob
did some initial work estimating the likely relationship between what tenants would be willing
to pay for retail space and the size of the shopping center. Specifically, he thought there was a
50% chance the true relationship would be: r = 60 0.001s and a 50% chance that the true
relationship would be r = 50 0.001s where r is the rental rate per square meter of floor space and s
is the total size of the shopping center in square meters. Furthermore, Bob was going to assume that
once the shopping center had been built, the realized relationship between r and s would remain
unchanged for the next 20 years.
Bob was planning to ignore discount rates and the time value of money in his initial evaluation of
the project. He was going to treat all of the project s costs and benefits equally no matter when they
occurred in the life of the project; that is, he was going to treat a $1 cost incurred (or

Unjust Resistance
Throughout the time of history, resistance, rebellions, and revolutions have played major roles
in the forming of nations. In a society where the people are free, some people might think of
their resistance to laws as positive while others, negative. Resistance of these people is usually
against unjust laws. This resistance has played a major role in making the government more just,
especially in the U.S. where the people have a lot of freedom. Sometimes, someone would argue
that to disobey the laws is wrong, but in the case where the laws are unjust it is the people s right
and duty to reform such laws so the society may continue to live in an environment with justice and
liberty. Undoubtedly people in a free society have much power, which

The Middle Ages or the Dark Ages Essay
The Middle Ages
Imagine having to bury your own children. How awful would that be? The Middle Ages were a
brutal time that included the bubonic plague, many wars and other horrible things. This period is
considered to be one of religion and the Catholic Church, but this was overshadowed by chaos and
confusion. Although the Middle Agesis often known as the age of faith, a more appropriate title
for the time period would be The Dark Ages because of the black death, wars and the collapse of
government.
The Black Death caused intense suffering and many problems across Europe. According to the
book, The Black Plague the black death started when a twenty five year old man who skinned a

As you can see the Black Death had a devastating effect on Europe, but its damaging effect was
multiplied by the wars.
Wars, attacks and invasions were common during the Middle Ages. The early period had seen
the fall of the Roman Empire and this must have contributed to a destabilizing effect. For
example, the Turks and Arabs attacked and conquered the people living in Romania, also known
as the Byzantine Empire. As stated by Pope Urban II, They have killed and captured many, and
have destroyed the churches and devastated the empire (Doc 9). As this quote shows the Turks and
Arabs completely destroyed the empire. Also, in 842 there was a great slaughter in England that
killed many people. as stated by the Anglo Saxon Chronicle, 842 in this year there was a great
slaughter in London and Quentavic and in Rochester (Doc 3). As this quote shows, things seem
chaotic, out of control and very unsafe during the middle ages. These wars, attacks and invasions
caused mayhem but the situation only got worse when the system of government was eroded.
Finally, the system of government crashed. Trade stopped and a lot of peasants abandoned their
fields. It got so bad that people started to take refuge in the mountains. As stated by Frantz Funck
Brentano, The people have gone to cower in the depths of the forest or in inaccessible regions, or
have taken refuge in high mountains. Society has no longer any government (Doc 1). As this

Guilt In Macbeth Act 2
Act 2 Scene 2 of William Shakespeare s Macbeth introduces two different reactions from two of
the main characters bloody hands, a symbolism of guilt. The tragic hero, Macbeth, feels remorse
and shame, would rather become blind than look at his hands and is so overcome by fear that he
believes not even washing his bloody hands will eliminate the evidence of his wrong doing. On the
contrary, Lady Macbeth mocks her husband, presents herself as an impure woman who is stronger
than her male partner and believes that water clears her and Macbeth of any wrongdoing. First of
all, the thane feels shameand disgrace for his actions of murdering Duncan and the bloody hands
reminds him of what he did, causing him the vicious cycle of guilt. In the chambers, he exclaims to
his wife, This is a sorry sight (2.2.28). To further explain, the quote places emphasis on the word
sorry , the meaning being in a poor or pitiful state or condition . This means the sight of his hands
reminds him of his actions which to Macbeth is deplorable and wretched sight. Conversely, Lady
Macbeth shames her husband, manipulating him to believe he did not do something so
dishonourable. The aftermath of Macbeth s growing guilt has her mocking him by saying, A
foolish thing to say a sorry sight (2.2.29). Regarding her tone, the words foolish and sorry have a
background of intensity, the word foolish meaning a person lacks a good sense of judgement.

very intriguing and I thought it created an excellent learning opportunity. Not only would I be
digging into the development of a 14 year old, I would also be gaining knowledge about the
impact or effects of Down syndromeon development. Jason is 14 years old, short but heavy set
for his age and height. He is typically in a very good mood and happy to have a friend to spend
time with and this day as I visited him at his home was no different. Down syndrome is a
chromosomal disorder which occurs in 1 out of every 800 live births ((T. Crandell, C. Crandell
Vander Zanden, 2012, p.81). Most Down patients have a condition called trisomy 21, or 3 copies

Inez Beverly Prosser, Psychologist
Inez Beverly Posser (1895 1934) was America s first Black female psychologist. http:/
/www.apa.org/monitor/2008/11/prosser.aspx . Not only is this significant in itself, it is also the
adversity she overcame growing up to get there. And later, in the profound research in her
dissertation that caused controversy as well as groundbreaking discoveries regarding education and
integration vs. segregation as it relates to psychology. Inez was born into a family with 10 other
siblings where she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Why did Inez s research and conclusion cause such controversy? There are many 3 different views
that can be drawn on the research and conclusions. First, since Inez was African
American herself, this may have conflicted within her African Americancommunity. Why?
Since African Americans have been struggling for equal rights and equality in education, this
would seem to go against what her own race has been struggling to achieve. On the surface it
would appear that way. However, her research was from a psychological perspective that had not
yet been considered or researched. Ironically, her conclusions in her study in her dissertation could
also be useful as the topic of desegregation that did not come along until decades after her study.
The question that was answered even before its time, is how desegregation would effect the
students themselves. Would this have a positive or negative effect on their education? If equality
was to be reached in the public school system wouldn t this have to also mean that the
African American students would also fare better than in integrated schools? What s the use in
achieving desegregation if it is going to have such a negative impact on the African American
students? If you will notice, the word integrated is used in place of desegregation in her study since
desegregation had not yet even been addressed! As you can imagine, many different views,
arguments, and psychological

  • 4. The Apostle Of The Deaf Essay Louis Laurent Marie Clerc or commonly known as the Apostle of the Deaf in America , was born December 26, 1785 in La Balme les Grottes, France. Mr. Clerc was born in a village in the south eastern side of France; he came from a well off middle class family that would have been considered bourgeois for his time. His father was Joseph Francis Clerc a civil attorney for the royal family and his mother was Marie Elizabeth Candy whose father was a notary public. Her father as well as being an attorney also served as major of their Balme les Grottes village from 1780 to 1814[1]. Laurent Clercwas born with the ability to hear, but around the age of one, Laurent was left unattended for a few moments and manage to climb on top of a chair and fall onto the kitchen fireplace, badly injuring the right side of this face. After this incident Clerc developed a fever and lost his hearing and sense of smell [2]. He developed a scar underneath his right ear, this interestingly enough helped create his name sign according to author Loida Canlas, His name sign derives from the scar that remained the middle and index fingers brushed downward across the right cheek near the mouth (Canlas) [1] ; it is believed that Laurent Clerc name sign is one of the most iconic and recognizable name sign in American deaf culture. It is speculated and was argued by Clerc himself, that he might have been born deaf, but that it was only discovered after the accident and attributed to it [1]. When Clerc ... • 5. Differences Between Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and... At the mention of the name Alice, one tends to usually think of the children s stories by Lewis Carroll. Namely, Alice s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass are two classic works of children s literature that for over a century have been read by children and adults alike. These two stories tell the tale of a young girl named Alice who finds herself in peculiar surroundings, where she encountersmany different and unusual characters. Although Alice is at the centre of both stories, each tale is uniquely different in its purpose, characters and style. Carroll first published Alice s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, three years after he had first told the story to the young girl Alice Liddell and her sisters, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both of these stories are structured differently in the manner in which Carroll had written them. For Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, there is no direction to the story and one could almost place the chapters in any sequence and the story would still make sense. However, the opposite is true for Through the Looking Glass as Carroll clearly indicated at the beginning with the introduction of the chess game. This image of a chess board is fundamental to understanding the story in Through the Looking Glass and portrays a sense of logic and order to the reader. Throughout the story, the reader has a clear sense of direction as to where the story will go next and each chapter follows in sequence. Alice s journey in the second story is to go from being a pawn to that of a Queen. Carroll s use of the chess board is also important in Alice s transition to adulthood. Her journey across the chess board from being a pawn to reaching the status of Queen represents the growth of being a child to becoming an adult. This emphasis is conveyed primarily in Through the Looking Glass and Carroll conveys this through the encounters that Alice has with the various characters, mainly the Queens and the Kings. The Queen always seems one step ahead of Alice, similar to what a child feels in an adult world. Carroll continues to express the tyranny of adulthood through Alice s encounters and journey. She soon learns that becoming a Queen was not all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. How Socio Demographic Factors Influence Income Summative Report 2 Research Question: How do socio demographic factors influence income in the UK? Introduction Socio demographic factors are factors such as age, sex, ethnicity, religion, which affect society and are present in statistics. These factors have a significant effect on income because a person with a university degree is able to increase their income as they may look for more specialized jobs in relevance to their degree thus allowing them to generate higher levels of income in comparison to somebody who has a lower education level for example GCSE s who would look for jobs in line with their current qualifications. In order for me to analyse how socio demographic factors affect income I have chosen to look at 3 independent variables; Education, Gender and Religion to see the level of statistical significance in relation to income. In terms of a previous literature I have reviewed different types of literature in order to understand the relationship of these independent variables to income and have looked at the Theory of human Capital in regards to education by Becker (2009), theories that discuss the gender pay gap, and also Max Weber s renowned book of The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism which examines the effect of religiosity in increasing levels of income amongst Protestants. After exploring this literature I will carry out Analysis of Variance and Regression; both linear and multiple to see how much of an impact the variables of Education, ... • 10. Research On Cognitive Affective Processes Intersubjectivity refers to the shared understanding between individuals (GГ¶ncГј, 1993). Research shows cognitive affective processes help to develop intersubjectivity (Tronick Cohn, 1989). Similarly, in psychotherapeutic relationships, cognitive affective processes are the building blocks to the therapeutic alliance. A psychotherapeutic alliance constitutes the shared client psychotherapist relationship marked by mutual respect, caring and shared understanding of therapeutic goals. If intersubjectivityis nurtured in the client psychotherapist relationship, this can lead to increased mutual understanding and goal achievement (as defined by the client) in psychotherapy. In order to show that psychotherapeutic alliances can be fortified by applying intersubjectivity to psychotherapeutic relationships, this paper is divided into four parts. First the literature review opens with the origin and definition of intersubjectivity, including sections on communication, affect, prolepsis and zone of proximal development (ZPD). The second section will look at applications to psychotherapy. The third section will offer implications to the field and finally concluding remarks will close with societal shifts that must be made to foster intersubjectivity in psychotherapy. Defining Intersubjectivity Origin Mother infant interaction provides the starting point for intersubjectivity (Trevarthen, 1979). The Nanjing Massacre was arguably more atrocious than the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in terms of ongoing physical violence. The Japanese Imperial Army s invasion in China prolonged the Nanjing Massacre. Moreover, arguably, it was more atrocious in their case because their own government and army abandoned them. A survivor named Jiang Genfu had to watch his parents and siblings get killed by Japanese soldiers, at the age of nine. The Nanjing Massacre was hardly the unifying event that it has for the Chinese . No one could fathom the overall extent of the terror by looking at confidential accounts and diaries from Chinese survivors. An estimate of 200,000 Chinese civilians and war prisoners were massacred in Nanjing during the first six weeks of the Japanese invasion. Numbers may not mean anything, however, the violence was ongoing. Historians also had to take into account that not all numbers add up because published textbooks present varied information. Beijing stated that 300,000 people were massacred. Both sides often questioned the figures. A professor at Sophia University named Watanabe Shoichi, claimed that 200,000 or 300,000 could not have been massacred in Nanjing, assuming the size of the Japanese ... In the average American s eyes, there is always assumptions made about slavery and the nature of slavery. Slavery was something that many people relied on for centuries. It is not something that can be easily forgotten and the importance of it cannot be understated. Slaverywas simply the bondage of peoples who were then forced into labor on farms or in the city. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were several key differences about each of them and each had their own place within the American economy. Urban slavery and rural slavery were different from each other in terms of location, living conditions, and slave agency. Firstly, location was important if talking about rural and urban slavery. Within the rural slavery system, there were different sized farms that a slave might belong to. Smaller farms were the norm in places like Kentucky, and they did not require large amounts of slaves like the cotton plantations. Within those smaller farms like in Kentucky, slaves were not needed in large numbers like the Deep South simply because Kentucky grew different crops like corn and hemp which did not require large numbers of gang laborers. A farmer only needed the amount of slaves necessary for the job to be done which set artificial limits on farmers for the number of slaves a farmer would own. A farmer in Kentucky growing hemp is not going to need 300 slaves to do the job, only 5 or 6, 1 and this smaller sized farm relied on the few slaves it had in order to survive. The affects of the Sarbanes Oxley Act on Public Companies and the Market Shareen Sidhu University of Maryland University College The Affects of the Sarbanes Oxley Act on Public Companies and the Market The Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002 was implemented and designed to protect the interests of the investing public and the mission is to set and enforce practice standards for a new class of firms registered to audit publicly held companies (Verschoor, 2012). During the early 2000 s, the world saw an alarming number of accounting scandals take place resulting in many corporations going bankrupt. Some of the major companies involved in these scandals were from Enron, WorldCom, and one of the top five accounting and auditing firms, Arthur Andersen. These companies were dishonest with their financial statements, assuring the public the company was very successful, when in reality they were not. This became a problem because if the public believes a company is doing well, they are more likely to invest in it. That is to say, once these companies were exposed, it caused a number of companies going bankrupt and a major mistrust between the public and the capital market. Consequently, the federal government quickly took action and enacted the Sarbanes Oxley act of 2002, also known as SOX, which was created by the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). A Theology Of Leadership For Christ s Church Theology is an attempt to explain God and his relationship to our world and humanity, while leadership is the human endeavor or capacity to lead or guide others through an operation, activity, task, or even through life. To build a theology of leadership is to build on the interrelation between these two. In order to develop a true theology of leadership, thoughtful reflection on Biblical scripture and the leadership of those called by God must be examined. What I assert is that of all the models that we have examined that Servant Leadership is a theology of leadership for Christ centered pastoral leadership within Christ s church. Northouse defines leadership as a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal. Leadership as it works through those in pastoral leadership in the church then is a process whereby an individual who has been influenced by the works of Christ as they have journeyed the path of faith and come to embrace and embody Christ and the gospel message within their own life then in acceptance of Christ s call upon their life goes out to influence, invite, and empower others to embrace and embody the gospel in their own lives. • 26. The Theory Of Ladenness s Theory Essay The theory of ladenness has been debated amongst philosophers for hundreds of years. The theory of ladenness debates whether one s past experiences affect their perceived inputs or their interpretation of those inputs. Kuhn strongly believes that one s experiences affect what they perceive, however Hanson provides strong evidence suggesting that what people perceive as their surroundings are indistinguishable, but their interpretations differ. While there is evidence to support both theories, I believe that Hanson better provides evidence by showing the strength of his theory while correspondingly arguing the flaws in Kuhn s theory. To understand the theory of ladenness, we need to differentiate between perceptionand interpretation. Perception is the process where we become aware of our surroundings, while interpretation is the process were our minds absorb the information and comprehend it using information and experiences we have accumulated. Despite their differences, these two functions are essentially related. Together they allow us to become aware and react to our surroundings. He also thought that Melon should make a one time upfront payment to lease the parcel of land for the expected 20 year life of the project. Bob thought the amount retailers in the shopping center would be willing to pay per square meter of floor space would be a decreasing function of the total size of the shopping center. Bob did some initial work estimating the likely relationship between what tenants would be willing to pay for retail space and the size of the shopping center. Specifically, he thought there was a 50% chance the true relationship would be: r = 60 0.001s and a 50% chance that the true relationship would be r = 50 0.001s where r is the rental rate per square meter of floor space and s is the total size of the shopping center in square meters. Furthermore, Bob was going to assume that once the shopping center had been built, the realized relationship between r and s would remain unchanged for the next 20 years. Bob was planning to ignore discount rates and the time value of money in his initial evaluation of the project. As you can see the Black Death had a devastating effect on Europe, but its damaging effect was multiplied by the wars. Wars, attacks and invasions were common during the Middle Ages. The early period had seen the fall of the Roman Empire and this must have contributed to a destabilizing effect. For example, the Turks and Arabs attacked and conquered the people living in Romania, also known as the Byzantine Empire. As stated by Pope Urban II, They have killed and captured many, and have destroyed the churches and devastated the empire (Doc 9). Also, in 842 there was a great slaughter in England that killed many people. as stated by the Anglo Saxon Chronicle, 842 in this year there was a great slaughter in London and Quentavic and in Rochester (Doc 3). As this quote shows, things seem chaotic, out of control and very unsafe during the middle ages. These wars, attacks and invasions caused mayhem but the situation only got worse when the system of government was eroded. Finally, the system of government crashed. Trade stopped and a lot of peasants abandoned their fields. It got so bad that people started to take refuge in the mountains. The tragic hero, Macbeth, feels remorse and shame, would rather become blind than look at his hands and is so overcome by fear that he believes not even washing his bloody hands will eliminate the evidence of his wrong doing. On the contrary, Lady Macbeth mocks her husband, presents herself as an impure woman who is stronger than her male partner and believes that water clears her and Macbeth of any wrongdoing. First of all, the thane feels shameand disgrace for his actions of murdering Duncan and the bloody hands reminds him of what he did, causing him the vicious cycle of guilt. In the chambers, he exclaims to his wife, This is a sorry sight (2.2.28). To further explain, the quote places emphasis on the word sorry , the meaning being in a poor or pitiful state or condition . This means the sight of his hands reminds him of his actions which to Macbeth is deplorable and wretched sight. Conversely, Lady Macbeth shames her husband, manipulating him to believe he did not do something so dishonourable. The aftermath of Macbeth s growing guilt has her mocking him by saying, A foolish thing to say a sorry sight (2.2.29). • 43. Observation Paper On Child Development Observation Paper A unique opportunity was presented to me as I prepared to complete the observation or interview paper for HDFS 225. We have close friends who have a fourteen year old son with Down syndrome and I was given permission to spend time with Jason (not his real name) over a weekend and this enabled me to observe an adolescent male who happens to be a special needs child. The adolescent period of human development interests me since this stage in life presents significant changes and is considered to be some of the most critical and challenging years in human development. The addition of the documented special need made the opportunity very intriguing and I thought it created an excellent learning opportunity. Not only would I be digging into the development of a 14 year old, I would also be gaining knowledge about the impact or effects of Down syndromeon development. Jason is 14 years old, short but heavy set for his age and height. He is typically in a very good mood and happy to have a friend to spend time with and this day as I visited him at his home was no different. Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder which occurs in 1 out of every 800 live births ((T. Crandell, C. Crandell Vander Zanden, 2012, p.81). Most Down patients have a condition called trisomy 21, or 3 copies of the 21st chromosome. On the surface it would appear that way. However, her research was from a psychological perspective that had not yet been considered or researched. Ironically, her conclusions in her study in her dissertation could also be useful as the topic of desegregation that did not come along until decades after her study.
