Some students come to the tutoring room with the strict purpose of getting their work done, they are
not in there to waste their time chatting and forming bonds with the tutors.
How would we solve this physics problem?

This conversation is a common example of the very straight forward and focussed students in the
Taylor Tutoring Center. A much different conversation such as one between the tutors and students
that had formed bonds would include more personal details and would be more relaxed. An insider
informant from the Taylor Tutoring Center, Mandy, shared with me that she likes having a closer
relationship with the tutors, it makes her feel more comfortable asking questions and she feels like the
tutor won t judge her for not understanding a concept. Hearing the reasoning behind why Mandy
pursues a bond with the tutors makes plenty of sense, however, it was strange to me that she would
feel less comfortable asking questions to the tutors even though their entire job is being there to guide
the students.
After this conversation with Mandy, I was curious to find out if the tutors were trained a specific way
on how to help students in a manner that makes the student feel welcome to further ask questions or
whether they were just sent in the room with no guidance. The next time I was in the Taylor Tutoring

In the novel Echols also reprints his prison writings. This engages the audience as they are able to see
how he felt in the moment and not through his overlook of prison. They can better understand what
was happening because the passages are not written as a past memory, but as his emotions in that
minute. This allows no room for incorrect feelings as it is impossible to forget what happens at that
instant. The readers are truly capable of comprehending his sentiments. For example, I have lost all
faith, lost all belief. I teeter on the edge of hopelessness. Everything is a fight, and I m so tired. I m so
tired of struggling; I want to scream until I m gargling my own blood (305). At this moment the
people reading the book really feel for Echols and this draws their attention. One of Echols most
affecting and beautifully written passages in the novel is his description of the emotional torture the
prison does to him. The author s pain can be clearly envisioned through the passage. It creates a
feeling of disgust and hatred towards the guards and at the same time the reader feels the need to cry
for the author as he suffers through the pain and torture. He uses sentences like, Soon you walk with
your shoulders slumped and your head down, like a beast that s used to being kicked... and also, ...the
prison staff does not look at you as human... (65). The

To do a rhetorical analysis of this speech we would follow the Neo Aristotelian approach. The Neo
Aristotelian approach consists of five canons which are invention, organization, style, memory and
delivery. First I will start off with Invention. According to Foss the critic s concern in applying the
canon of invention is with the speaker s major ideas, line of argument, or content (29). Invention is
divided into two categories: external proofs and internal proofs. External proofs include sources used
by the author but does not create, including testimony of eyewitnesses (Foss 29). I will focus on the
internal proofs of this speech, which are logos or logical argument; ethos, the appeal of the speaker s
character and pathos, emotional appeal. In the speech of The Challenger Disaster Reagan does not
necessarily present an argument, but rather a speech to console and find meaning. He starts the speech

if the victim decided to marry her attacker, he would ultimately evade the legal repercussion of his
heinous actions. During the 12th and 13th century laws against sex, crimes began to change. The first
law change assisted virgins that were raped. They were able to file a civil suit against the perpetrator.
Therefore, this process would evolve into a trail by a jury. Finally, during the 13th century the criminal
definition of rape changed, yet again due to society changing. This new law stated that the rape of
matrons, nuns, widows, concubines, and prostitutes, as well as the statutory rape of children (Richards
Marcum, 2015, p. 16) was now considered a criminal act.
Taking a look at the United States, the rape law here consisted of five elements that must be met
before it was considered rape in a court of law. The act had to be criminal, involve carnal knowledge,
victimize a woman, and be committed using force, and the force has to be against the will of the
victim (Richards Marcum, 2015, p. 17). The United States law had many restrictions that did not
consider rape against spouses. This common law definition of rape was used until the mid 1900 s. It

My Initial Reaction to the Work
Out of the choices I had to pick from for my analysis. I chose the painting, Slave Ship by Joseph
Turner, due to the chaos I see in the painting. Not only is the event being portrayed very chaotic, but
the painting itself is full of turmoil as well. The painting has vigorous brush strokes and the colors
seem to melt together in areas, leaving the sky and the sea hard to distinguish in the middle portion of
the painting. The artist also uses bright and dark colors, allowing the creation of pandemonium that I
feel when I see this work. You can see the beginning of a storm on the left of the painting along with a
boat heading into the rougher waters caused by the weather, resulting in the bow to be propelled
upward.
The bottom portion of the painting is topsy turvy as well, showing shackled hands and chains raised
from the turbulent seas. With close inspection, you can see fish within the thrashing waves on the
bottom left portion of the painting. There are fish seen swarming a shackled hand in the bottom right
